Rarely is losing his Title the LEAST of a Champions worries here in the WWF.....but tonight, if Scott Steiner loses the gold, he loses everything that he's been working towards since June of 1996.....because if Scott Steiner loses the Intercontinental Championship to Mr. Perfect.....he also loses his spot in tonight's Royal Rumble match.....which means he ALSO loses the opportunity, to write a wrong that dates back seven months now. King of the Ring 1996, Scott Steiner defeated Shawn Michaels, right in the middle of the ring to capture what he THOUGHT was his first WWF Championship.....only to have his dream snatched away just 24 hours later, in a loop-hole conjured up by one Vincent Kennedy McMahon......and if you believe Big Poppa Pump, come Wrestlemania, he's going to shove that loop-hole straight up Shawn Michaels ass...... .......but to do that, he needs to pick up a victory here.....against a man no stranger to wearing the prestigious Intercontinental Championship, wearing the gold twice between 1990 and 1991....and that man's name is Mr. Perfect. You could be excused for believing that Perfect is stretching himself a little thin here right now, not content with simply managing the career of Billy Gunn.....and subsequently Jesse James.....the itch of competition has also compelled him to lace those white boots up for another run between the ropes......and to be fair, since his return back at the Survivor Series, his record is exactly what he claims to be....absolutely perfect.....of course, the fact that he is often accompanied (as he is tonight) by his two wards certainly helps matters......and both Billy Gunn and Jesse James make their presence felt tonight, giving Perfect ample opportunity to work over the Champion...... ......they are also prevalent in the ending of the contest....because once Perfect has decided that Steiner is suffered enough, he sets Big Poppa Pump up for his patented Perfect-Plex.....except there was two problems with that.....Steiner wasn't beat up enough.....and the pair were two close to the ropes....meaning that before the Challenger could apply the move, Steiner hooked him with a Northern Lights Suplex that sent Perfect sailing over the top rope and crashing down onto Gunn and James. Steiner follows them to the outside where a pair of Overhead Belly to Bellys on the floor sees the entourage taken care of.....before the Champion rolls Perfect back into the ring......applies the Steiner Recliner......and just like that, that Perfect record, has a big Scott Steiner shaped blemish on it. Nash tells Shawn not to sweat it.......because Big Daddy Cool is going to personally guarantee........that come Wrestlemania, the Heartbreak Kid will get the opponent he deserves.....ok......buddy?..... Scott Hall is still hampered slightly by tendon damage in his ankle which he's working through (and will be for the next ten months) coupled with the fact that age is slowly catching up with him, but even that wasn't enough to drag this match down. The Nation flee like thieves in the night.....and one Razors Edge later, Bret Hart and Owen Hart are officially OUT of the Royal Rumble match. Young Rey Mysterio has been the flag bearer for the division since capturing the title back in August at Summerslam.....five months later and nobody has managed to dethrone him, making him the longest reigning Champion in the Light Heavyweight Divisions (admittedly, short lived) history.....tonight however he's facing a different kind of challenge than he's used too......sure Christopher Daniels can fly.......he can wrestle.....he can brawl.......but he is also competing under the influence of one of the darkest minds in the WWF, Raven..... ......the two light heavyweights have an exciting back and forth battle, with both competitors taking to the air. The official is all over that, and quick to berate DeMott for placing his hands on Rey.....but DeMott proclaims his innocence, stating he was just helping him back into the ring......unfortunately for Rey, the official did more harm than good......because while he was distracted admonishing Bill DeMott, he missed the Dogs of War entering the ring and completely destroying Mysterio with a brutal Double Chokeslam........Daniels could have picked up the win there.....but opts to inflict more punishment with the Angels Wings.....and three seconds later, Rey's five month reign is over. The Dude seems to think so, and shows Raven a piece of paper that presumably contains his number......telling him that he won't HAVE to outlast 29 other people by the time he gets in. Raven looks at the number, before reaching into his own pocket and pulling out his own. Jim Ross questions whether HBK would be better served by staying in the back and preparing for his upcoming title match with The Undertaker, but Shawn shrugs that off, saying he has his game plan in place, he's here now to find out who his opponent at Wrestlemania is going to be...... .....for once, there is very little anticipation to find out who drew number one.....because we already know......and Stone Cold Steve Austin makes his way to the ring to a thunderous ovation from the crowd......who also already know the identity of the man entering at number two......The Loose Cannon, Brian Pillman......who may not get quite the reaction Steve Austin does, but he's not far behind. The two men have absolutely no problem fighting each other.....in fact I think they quite like the idea....and they spend the next two minutes brawling about the ring....and while both men DO try to eliminate the other, it's clear that they aren't trying especially hard.....a fact that is highlighted when entrant number three arrives....... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/SkJj31I.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/SkJj31I.jpg"></a> Entrant #3: Justin Credible .....whether it's a ploy by Vince McMahon to get a member of the KLiQ in their early to counteract Austin and Pillman.....or simply bad luck on the part of Justin Credible, the result is the same. Stone Cold and The Loose Cannon have spent the best part of two months trying to find ways to punish the KLiQ.....and now they have Justin Credible alllllllllll alone......for what is the longest 1:45 of Credibles life.....because fortunately for him Austin puts him out of his misery and tosses him from the match, just as the clock signals the arrival of the next competitor..... Eliminated: Justin Credible (1:40) (Steve Austin) <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/TEcbPVm.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/TEcbPVm.jpg"></a> Entrant #4: Kokina ......and number four is a biggie.......a very big, biggie.....as the Sons of Samoa's Kokina comes lumbering down the aisle.....I don't think Austin and Pillman are going to be tossing him out quite as easily as they (Austin) did Credible.....not that it stops them going right on the attack the second the big man climbs between the ropes. They even manage to wobble the mammoth Samoan.....but they can neither knock Kokina from his feet, or get anywhere near close to eliminating him, before Kokina drops each man with a stiff headbutt a piece.....it may be two against one here, but you wouldn't know it right now.....maybe entry number five will help..... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/B8Po2V4.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/B8Po2V4.jpg"></a> Entrant #5: Marty Jannetty .......or maybe not......because while Marty Jannetty comes pelting down the aisle way, his momentum soon comes to a screeching halt when he collides with the unmovable frame of Kokina. Pillman and Austin take a minute to catch their breath.....which is all it takes for Kokina to crush Jannetty with a huge leg drop....before once again attempting to double team the big man......and this time they have moderately more success, driving Kokina back into the ropes, but even with a man working on each leg they are unable to lift the Samoan...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/g4rm2sB.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/g4rm2sB.jpg"></a> Entrant #6: Nelson ........with first Kokina, and now Nelson.....that's a lot of beef in a ring that Jim Ross assures us has been reinforced especially for this match....the Nation member hits the ring....but instead of heading for the biggest dog in the fight in Kokina, he plucks Pillman off the Samoan by the hair and tosses him right over the top rope......clearly Nelson is looking to claim that bounty.....the Loose Cannon is able to scramble to safety on the apron however....and re-enters the ring with a springboard cross body onto Nelson.....who catches him mid air and drives him to the mat with a monstrous Power Slam, just as Kokina drops Austin.....and now these two big men come face to face...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/Cp7on94.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/Cp7on94.jpg"></a> Entrant #7: Jesse James .......it's Jesse James in at number seven.....and he instantly avoids the mass of flesh stood in the middle of the ring, circling each other like King Kong and Godzilla.....instead opting to launch an attack on Marty Jannetty. Rick Rude claims that this is exactly why James needs the guidance of Mr. Perfect.....because both Steve Austin and Brian Pillman are down.....eliminating both Steve Austin and Brian Pillman is an automatic World Title opportunity.....and Jesse James is attacking Marty Jannetty. Jim Ross claims that he believes Jesse James is just doing whatever it takes to keep out of the way of Nelson and Kokina, who have now began to hammer each other with blows...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/fTfqQPo.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/fTfqQPo.jpg"></a> Entrant #8: The British Bulldog .......The British Bulldog is out next.....historically Davey Boy has always fared pretty well in this sort of environment, lasting thirty six minutes in the 1991 Royal Rumble, before winning the 20 man battle at the Royal Albert hall later in that year.....coming in at number one in the 1992 Rumble and lasting almost twenty five minutes.....with his biggest achievement being in 1995, when he came in at number two and THOUGHT he had won the whole thing, before being tossed out from behind by actual winner Shawn Michaels......maybe finally this is the Bulldogs year.......although you wouldn't think so with how he starts.....because he charges straight for Nelson, looking for some payback for the Nation costing his brothers in-law a spot in the Rumble.....unfortunately Nelson and Kokina are currently battling it out to see who the dominant big man is, and they both drop the Bulldog with a double headbutt before returning to pounding on each other.....meanwhile Marty Jannetty has decided that he's going to be the one to claim the bounty on Steve Austin's head, as he is currently trying to tip Stone Cold over the top rope.......which is right about the time business picks up...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/RcWxjTn.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/RcWxjTn.jpg"></a> Entrant #9: Kevin Nash .......because Big Sexy Kevin Nash is in at number nine......and he makes an immediate impact, launching Jesse James over the top rope and crashing to the floor...... Eliminated: Jesse James (4:26) (Kevin Nash) .......before turning his attention to the huge mass of flesh that is Kokina and Nelson, who are currently both leaning against the ropes, trying to tip each other over the top........they have both managed to get one leg of their opponent off the mat.....meaning they are both unbalanced.......so when Kevin Nash charges across the ring and gives the two men the little extra momentum they need, they both go tumbling over the top rope and to the floor, in a very impressive display from Big Sexy...... Eliminated: Kokina (10:38) (Kevin Nash) Eliminated: Nelson (6:38) (Kevin Nash) ........after completing three eliminations in less than a minute, Nash finally focuses his attack on his targets for the evening.....Steve Austin and Brian Pillman.....although Jim Ross questions whether Nash is doing it because he has been ordered to......or because the prospect of a guaranteed World Title shot is too tempting a prospect to turn down...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/c6WxGuw.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/c6WxGuw.jpg"></a> Entrant #10: Dude Love ..........number ten brings out what SHOULD have been Raven......but in what Raven would call a lesson....(the rest of us would just call it taking advantage of the Dude's good nature)......Raven has taken Dude Loves number for himself......in the meantime Steve Austin has taken a break from battling Kevin Nash, to toss Marty Jannetty over the top rope.....Michaels finds that particularly funny.....saying it looks like Marty won't be Rocking his way to Wrestlemania any time soon..... Eliminated: Marty Jannetty (11:08) (Steve Austin) ..........before getting blindsided by the British Bulldog, who's looking to take a member of the Hart Foundation to Wrestlemania...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/0V33Nju.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/0V33Nju.jpg"></a> Entrant #11: The Rock ...........the next entrant puts an end to the Bulldogs attack however.....as The Rock hits the ring and instantly goes after the only remaining Hart Foundation member, Davey Boy Smith.....Dude Love is locked in a battle with Brian Pillman in one corner, while Kevin Nash and Steve Austin are peppering each other with blows in the opposite corner...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/hVtZiqC.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/hVtZiqC.jpg"></a> Entrant #12: Rich Steiner ...........we have the first member of the Million Dollar Corporation entering the fray now.....as the former Intercontinental Champion, Rich Steiner makes his way into the action.....Austin and Nash continue their battle in the corner.....with Shawn Michaels shouting at Nash to stop slacking and do what he's paid to do.....Nash halts his offence long enough to share some tense words with Michaels.....leaving Rich Steiner the perfect opening to attempt and eliminate Austin himself. Meanwhile The Rock and Davey Boy Smith continue the battle between the Nation and The Hart Foundation. Pillman on the other hand has knocked Dude Love to the mat and has moved over towards Austin and Steiner, helping his partner out..... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/PuDY2qB.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/PuDY2qB.jpg"></a> Entrant #13: Lance Storm .........as Lance Storm joins the action. This young man has had a tremendous start to his WWF career......even Shawn Michaels says it would be an honour to face this youngster at Wrestlemania......he bought Lance into the World Wrestling Federation after all. Jim Ross says that the ring is starting to fill up now.....as we see the unlikely combination of Lance Storm and Rich Steiner teaming up to try and eliminate Steve Austin....while the Bulldog tosses The Rock over the top.....only as far as the apron however and the Nation member scrambles back into the ring..... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/6H1RzAb.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/6H1RzAb.jpg"></a> Entrant #14: Ahmed Johnson ........time to introduce some more muscle into the match.....and it's Ahmed Johnson, who gets a great reception. He dives into the ring and turns Dude Love inside out with a Clothesline, as the Dude is stood (kind of proving Raven's point) doing a little dance for the crowd....before turning his attention to Kevin Nash, clearly still with some unfinished business with the KLiQ...... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/nDfYqdS.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/nDfYqdS.jpg"></a> Entrant #15: Sean Waltman .......speaking of the KLiQ, we are at the halfway point, and Sean Waltman is in at number fifteen.....he clips the knee of Ahmed from behind, giving Nash a brief reprise....before the two KLiQ men double team Ahmed......Michaels says that Nash should be grateful that Walkman got there when he did, because he was in danger of embarrassing himself. Jim Ross says that the ring is really filling up with bodies now....claiming that McMahon's bounty is having the opposite of its desired effect.....because the wrestlers are too busy trying to eliminate Austin and Pillman rather than each other........... <img style="max-width:50%; "src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/R1C6Ame.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/R1C6Ame.jpg"></a> Entrant #16: Scott Steiner .........it's number 16, and it's the man who successfully defended the Intercontinental Championship earlier in the evening.....it's Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner.....he plows into the sea of brawling wrestlers, dragging his brother off Brian Pillman....not to save Pillman, but so that he can beat the holy hell out of Rich Steiner. Dude Love has re-focused after the dancing bug bit him, and is currently attempting to earn a World Title shot by dumping Steve Austin.....he probably should have stuck to dancing because Austin backdrops him over the top rope and out of the match..... Eliminated: Dude Love (13:32) (Steve Austin) .......and he's not the only one....because Scott Steiner nails his brother with a huge Steinerline that sends him out as well......I'm sure DiBiase was hoping for a better showing than that by his client..... Chaos ensues on the outside, and it takes all of the officials and a number of security guards to separate the two warring factions.............. ...........which is when Kevin Nash FINALLY tosses Brian Pillman over the top rope and down to the floor, right in front of the announce table........ ............except the officials don't see it........ ..........and they don't hear Vince McMahon screaming at Brian Pillman to "........NOW......NOW........DO IT NOW GOD DAMN IT........." ............and Pillman re-enters the match........as Nash and Austin are brawling against the ropes.......... .........and Michaels leaves the announce table, just as Pillman is sneaking up behind the two men........... .........but what the officials do see, is Shawn Michaels pull the top rope down far enough that Brian Pillman only has to give a little shove........to send Steve Austin and Kevin Nash tumbling to the floor........... Eliminated: Steve Austin (62:46) (Brian Pillman) Eliminated: Kevin Nash (48:46) (Brian Pillman) ........and as Scott Hall looks on in shock at his partners elimination.....he is quickly tipped out from behind by Chris Jericho....... He then tosses Brian hard over the top rope, following him out to the floor as security tries to desperately separate them....... .......and in the ensuing madness, Kane eliminates Chris Jericho....... And that, Ladies and Gentlemen.....was the 1997 Royal Rumble.......and it was pretty good even if I do say so myself.......I think the choice to give Scott Steiner the win took a few people by surprise, but truth be told, Scotty has been earmarked to win the Rumble since the end of July. At the end of last years Wrestlemania I had three people in mind to win this match......Bret Hart, Steve Austin (assuming I could get him up to that level in time).....or Kevin Nash......Scott Steiner was never even a consideration......in fact the Steiner Brothers as a whole were not splitting up anytime soon, they were going to be the babyface figureheads of the Tag Team Division........only problem was, in the space of a month back in June, Scott Steiner got himself over........really over.........and stayed over........and in the meantime, put on the performance of the night week in and week out......so I booked him strong, but really it was Scotty that did all the hard work, and this victory was very much deserved. Likewise a lot of people were surprised at the decision NOT to include Bret and Owen Hart in the Royal Rumble match.......in fact a lot of fans have questioned whether we have lost faith in the Harts, who seem to be taking a back seat of late......but believe me, nothing could be further from the truth......The Harts are very much a part of future plans, they simply have a story that they need to tell first...... Speaking of the Harts, Owen's contract is currently up.....and we are once again locked in a bidding war with WCW.......much like Billy Gunn however (who actually re-signed with us the day of the Rumble) Owen isn't really taking their offer seriously......being seen as the Number one promotion in the world has really helped us at the negotiating table.......and for the record, Owen thinks Edge is going to be a star........the Road Warriors probably don't agree however......and are frankly furious with the way their match went down at The Rumble.....I don't care......hopefully it won't be long before they do a Triple H, ask for their release......and trot on down to WCW to give Bischoff a headache instead of me...... I don't want to go into any potential spoilers right now (just in case someone sees this comment before reading the show) but I just want to say I am very happy after this show. I may make another post in a day or two to actually talk about the show, but I'll give it time to settle in for now. But yeah, while reading it I actually got a big grin on my face when it came down to the final few. It had such drama and intrigue all night long, just a really awesome Rumble, to4st. On to Raw!

Scott Steiner - I'm pretty sure that Brian will be winning this, but I just feel like there is a lot of legs you can have in the "double champ" story before it gets shot.

Sid - Raven will stop Dude from competing in some way so that Sid lays a bad beating on him.

The Not Yet Outlaws - One more job for the LoD?

Hardys - The Riders have fallen pretty far from public eye, which is sad to see because they had some great potential to run the tag scene when they first started. Time away can do some really bad things. I won't be surprised to see a turn between them any day now to split the team.

LOVED the Rumble toast! Great job and the right man won! That said, when I first saw Scotty's promo before the Rumble, I was desperately hoping for

I'm also very curious about where the Harts go from here. Survivor Series 96-Survivor Series 97 era Bret Hart was top notch and I'd love to see his character develop that biting edge he had in real life. The whole stable lacks teeth right now.

Poor LOD...being put out to pasture by a bunch of vanilla midgets... I would love to see LOD come back on a murderous rampage culminating in a scaffold match at WM where Hawk and Animal just toss Edge, Christian, and the Hardys off the scaffold through a pile of tables.

I did have plans for them which went by the wayside after that.....although if the day comes where the team do split, it may well be the end of Windham's tenure here in the WWF.....he was a bit of an impulse signing back at the start of this one when I needed to bolster the Tag Team division a bit, and a solo Barry Windham would probably find himself becoming a bit of a JTTS. Another ratings record for us this week, as we raked in a whopping 24.20.......almost an enormous 8 point win over Nitro's 17.38. Brian Pillman is obviously enjoying his time in the main event.....and he must be keen to stay there because he's really been hitting the gym recently, shedding that traditional light heavyweight physique he's always had for a more muscular frame.....it works for him too, it's really boosted his star power, because now he 'looks' like a top guy......obviously he's nowhere near the standards of say his opponent on Raw, Scott Steiner, but then if Pillman got to that size he would have to alter his entire moveset. While we are on the subject of Pillman and Steiner......they put on a hell of a match on Raw.....and it's not often that Scott Steiner is out performed around here, but Pillman clearly had his working boots on and was out to impress after his starring role in the Royal Rumble. Owen Hart put pen to paper on a lucrative four year extension this week. WCW were desperate to secure his signature, but even after picking up a few losses as of late, Owen tells me that he's happier now than he has been at any point in his career.....and working alongside Bret and Davey is a big part of that......I'm glad to still have him with us. Of course it helps that the stories coming out of WCW at the minute are nothing but stories of backstage politics, as the Mega Powers continue to explode.
