The 'Upset' thread

Recommended Posts

You know the score, tell us about the biggest, most shocking, or just downright bizarre upsets that you've seen in the game.

Signed Jack Humphreys for BCF, after GAMMA cut him. Always worth having a couple of overseas names in to lose to the big stars, so the plan was to get him back into the win column, before taking on a David Webb or Martin Cupples.

Tune up fight sees him take on Steven Griffin, who was coming off a loss to Iain Fussell. First round, Griffin sparks him out cold.

No idea what to do with Humphreys now, but Griffin is an unlikely contender all of a sudden. Will fight Evgeni Medtner next for a shot at the belt.

I've had a lot, actually. It's hard to explain the context of all of them because every game is different, but probably the biggest one is that Norman Pike beat James Foster in October 2003. Foster is a mess in my game. Two fights later I threw him a bone by giving him Antonio Rimando, who is actually beginning to be really good but Foster is still better, and Foster dominated the fight for 5 rounds by laying on top of Rimando and then got knocked out late in the fifth.

Been playing my own regional promotion, Mozart Pinto got rushed into a title shot when he was 4-1 in my promotion because Bud Brockett had wrestle****ed everyone else at the top of the division.

Fight started as I expected, Brockett would just constantly take Pinto down and if he couldn't it'd just end up with Pinto trapped against the fence. After 20 minutes of this, it happened. Brockett ducked into a hard hook, stanky leg'd back to the fence and promptly got standing guillotined.

In April 2003 with KDM FC and I've had a fair share of upsets but only two are actually interesting.

Very first one was Takauji Aida TKOing Suporn Yooyen at bantamweight. Brought Aida in just for his marketability alone. First fight, with the betting odds at -650 to +510 against him, he TKO's Yooyen in 3:17 for his first win. Since then, he's been on a tear, beating Najib Sri Aziz bin Zai, Ang Dong (another upset -300 to +230, he Ko'd him in 17 seconds) and Po-Han Yue, all by first round stoppages. He's also risen to HLR in both Japan and Asia and is one of my most popular fighters but he's a bit far off a title shot though being only 4-0 and Kanji Togo being the champ.

The next biggest one was Hanako Shimizu KOing Sayoko Ebisawa for the KDM FC Womens Featherweight Interim title. See, very early, Veronika Sablikova went down with an injury which was going to keep her out of action for over a year. With that in mind, Sayoko Ebisawa went off, two 1st round submissions to Kit Sakamoto and Romi Takahashi made Ebisawa next in line. However, with Sablikova out and Shimizu KOing Taniko Uchiyama in the 1st round, I scheduled a fight for the interim belt with Ebisawa heavily favoured at -750 to +590. With Sablikova returning in about two months, I saw Ebisawa winning and Sablikova having a new contender for her belt. Shimizu had different ideas, Ebisawa shot for a takedown, Shimizu sprawled and Ebisawa gets caught with a knee. Ebisawa gets knocked backwards, rocked. Five power punches on the ground and night night. Guess it may be third time lucky for Shimizu against Sablikova when she returns.

In one save, I had Tabitha Cameron beat Hope Lehane by submission to strikes. That led me to look at Hope in the editor to find that (spoiler) she has really low heart at 25 (spoiler). Yep, that makes sense!

Then, in her first fight as champion, Tabitha Cameron got knocked out by Kirsten Page. Of course, then Page got G&P'd by Hanako Shimizu in her first title defense.

Oh oh and Samantha Sachs tapping out Sarah Vaughan happened too! Not THAT big an upset but an upset nonetheless.

Then I left that save and started one with the CVE dataset. Just so I could leave the upsets behind. Ha! No chance.

Monica Masters d. Sarah Vaughan by TKO (Strikes). Vaughan was a -750 to +580 favorite.

Jenny Deneuve d. Sandy Oliver by TKO (Strikes). Sandy was a -580 to +460 favorite.

Serena Hill d. Samantha Sachs by TKO (strikes). Sachs was a -730 to +580 favorite. This fight was later overturned because it seems Serena likes to smoke weed and failed the drug test and was fired as a result.

Noticing a trend here? <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

EDIT: Helena Broderick d. Jessica Herbig via TKO (strikes). Herbig was favored -500 to +390.

Simone King d. Sayoko Ebisawa via TKO (Strikes). Ebisawa was (get this) an -1100 to +870 favorite.

This is just silly.

Randy Couture (-560) vs Big Nog (+440) at UFC 33

Couture is the heavy favourite here.

In the 1st Round...

Minotauro nails a right cross.

Minotauro backs off, dazed but alert enough to cover up! Couture follows, sensing a chance to end the fight here and now!

(WHAT?!?!?!?...did he punch himself? There's something missing between those lines!)

Minotauro takes a right hand!

....

An extremely close round, could have gone either way but personally I'll give it to Minotauro 10-9.

....

Round 3:

...Minotauro, with both hooks in, attempts to get a rear naked choke fully applied.

The rear naked choke is in deep, Couture has to tap out!

It was a crazy fight to call, especially in that first round!

I have not had any "wow" upsets yet and I think it is mainly because most of my top tier fighters refuse to fight the less popular fighters. Therefore, most of the fight I end up booking are more reasonably matched. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but I do miss the huge upsets that I used to get regularly in WMMA4.

So early on in my GAMMA save I booked a fight between Adrian Pascal and Big Magic, with the intent of giving Pascal a relatively easy bout to build his heat up...instead Big Magic scores a first round TKO and Pascal goes on the lose three fights in a row. Big Magic also managed a minor upset over Ricky Heath as well.

Linfield Ballard has been having a late career resurgence in this save, all of which came from upset wins. Booked him in fights against Guillermo Morales, Derek South and Danny Akabaro and he has won them all, despite the odds being against him. He is now the second ranked Light Heavyweight and now I'm low key backing him for an upset title victory against Mike Watson.

My biggest upset though, was at my most recent show. Basically, Tim Boyer has kinda just been my heavyweight gatekeeper losing to both Rav Kapur and Ivanov to build them up to title fights, so I figured I'd give him a much easier match so he remains somewhat of a big deal. Put him up against Steve Mason, who hasn't shown enough for me to get behind him so I wasn't fussed if he lost...but of course he won. Took a beating in round one then rallied and got the TKO in round 2. Now he gone 3 in a row and has changed my opinion...meanwhile, Boyer might be one more loss away from retirement.

I all my wrestling games, in WMMA 4, and now in WMMA 5, I create a loser called Tim Sanders. He's always got low stats (except in TEW where he's got good stats but is a jobber) and he's built small. His older brother is a monster I always create who dominates everyone.

Anyway, I just had my Flyweight tournment to crown my first champion and when a fighter wouldn't take part, I threw Tim in there.

Tim knocked out Gus Waters and raised his record to 1-3. I debated cutting Waters as punishment for the loss, but Tim turned around and got a TKO win over Tito del Sol in round 2. The craziness ceased when he was demolished in the finals by Ray Bellinger but I've got to give props to my little loser. He fought hard to prove himself.

I've had a few major ones across different saves but two of my favourite ones came in my re-opened FLB save but didn't happen in my company.

Firstly we have Hope Lehane being dethroned By Nora Bethelen, Now in the context of how this save played out it wasn't the biggest upset ever hell myabe it was even expected depending on the type of fan you are. But from a pure gameplay standpoint I consider it an upset.

Hope "The Scythe" Lehane's Career went as it usually did for 2002 though she only had one fight in september she scored a quick submission over Haley Croft to improve her record to 10-0, but then in may of 2003 Hope took on a motivated Alyson Arroway ranked #2 in the world at that point, THe first round went more or less as expected with Hope getting a takedown and controlling the fight but early in the second round Arroway caught Hope coming in for a takedown with a knee and knocked her out cold. After the fight however it cme to light that Arroway had taken PEDs prior to the fight and was thus stripped of the title. Hope then took on Temperance Mcroy who was basiclaly the only fighter available to fight her at the time in a fight basically designed to give hope the title back without outright just giving it to her, as most people thoguht would happen Hope Submitted Temperance in the first round to regain the belt. This would be her last fight before her face off with Bethlen and susequent retirement.

Nora "One Shot" Bethlen began her MMA Career picking up 3 easy wins on the European local circuit KOing all her opponents in the first round with displays of dazzling headkicks, Violent power punches and absolutely Vicious gground and pound. After her initial wins Nora had choice to make, does she move to Canada and try to be signed by WEFF or Asia to be signed by KDM FC obviously if you're following the story thus far she chose Canada, presumably due to the greater competition on the regional circuit. In her first fight in Canada she seemed a little off her game, dominant nonetheless but not her usual self, her opponent lasted until about half way into the second round before being KOd. Nora then regianed her form taking out her next local opponent in exactly 1 minute before she got her first taste of real competition when she faced off against Chelsea Lawson, while not a great fighter Lawson was still a step up from what Nora was used too and was to be considered her first real test for Chelsea it was a chance to either retire on a win or to get back into WEFF. Well apparently Nora was not one to give up and opportunity as she demolished Lawson in 1:33 seconds of the first round sending her opponent into retirement in the process. Her next fight was her WEFF debut having been signed after her destruction of Chelsea Lawson. In Her debut she was set to face fellow striker Kirsten Page who she burtally KOd with a single brutal punch to the jaw ending the fight in 31 seconds. she then took on fellow undefeated prospect Janey McDwyer who was Sitting at 8-0 and was coming off two submission victories over Marianne Geoffries and Anna Thompson. Janey barely faired any better than Kirsten Page had being stopped by 46 seconds into the first round. Nora then Finally recieved her title shot against Hope Lehane inspite of her menacing record the odds makers still had lehane the favourite at -560 to +440 odds in favour of the champion. However in her usual fashion Nora Bethlen walked down arguably the greatest Women's Featherweight to ever compete to this point in the History of MMA and landed bomb after bomb finally dropping and forcing the referee to jump in and save Lehane at just 3:00 minutes of the first round and with that Lehane decided to step away from the sport. Since that point Bethlen has fought once more against Indina Micklewhite in January of 2005 and stopped her 38 seconds into the first round after Micklewhite immediately shot for a takedown and was countered with a knee and GnP into unconciousness. She now sits at 10-0 and honestly nobody seems like they're gonna be able to stop her at this point.

The other one is a way bigger upset that Happened in GAMMA. As Usually happens when GAMMA hires people early on in the game Joe Hinchcliffe managed to find himself picked up only to lose his first two fights to Houston George in July 2002 and Gideon Navaroo in February of 2003 he then found himself matched up with Manuel Silva who finishing Cooper Richardson and Josh Aldarisio ended up on the wrong end of a close split decision to roided up Nathan CHambers. Basically Hichcliffe was probably on his way out of the company and GAMMA wanted to give their future megastar an easy win. Not Content to play the whipping boy however Hinchcliffe managed to produce a miraculous first round body kick TKO victory in a fight where the odds where -1200 to +950 against him and saved his job in the process this happened in september of 03 as of feb of 05 Silva has gone on to lose a Decision to Gideon Navaro and Hinchcliffe went on to pick up another stoppage over Holden Strant.

Not -1200, but this is probably the closest thing to it:

<img alt="H5Qy5HG.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/H5Qy5HG.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Shane Price was a generated local level fighter who had no real redeeming skills, was used to fill out the roster with cheaper guys and was looking to give Joss Wiltshire a bounce back win after losing to Devon Marunde. He gets KO'd on pretty much the only punch landed.

So yes, I would say it's definitely possible for someone -1200 to lose. All it takes is one punch.
