My retirement

(this'll be a long post, so just skip to the end if you so wish)

For those of you who know me/of me, I started on the Grey Dog Software forum some time in 2006 when I was off work sick due to a long term illness and I was browsing for wrestling games to play on a PC while at home bored out of my mind. After looking at various games, reviews and such I suddenly noticed in the bottom corner of a website an advert for something called, "Total Extreme Wrestling 2005". Intrigued, as i'd never heard of it, I clicked on the link and I was soon sucked into the wonderful world of TEW and the C-Verse.

I saw that there was a thriving, and often helpful, community surrounding this game on the forums. Soon enough I wanted to help out too so I started a thread showing off cuts of rarer and more obscure pictures of real-life wrestlers in case someone wanted to use those instead of the usual ones.

As I delved deeper into the C-Verse I noticed there were gaps in it, characters which had no pictures at all. After reading through various discussion posts and looking up how the pictures were created I decided to dip my toe into rendering and posted my first couple of renders a few months later. The response was quite overwhelming which I wasn't expecting, especially as if I look back now at those first ones a lot were quite terrible! :o

I posted more for the next few days, requests came in too (which I tried to do) and then a week later I received a pm from someone called, "Adam Ryland"? He asked if he could use my renders in the next version of TEW, to which of course I said yes!

Over time I continued to do renders and more people began to create renders too so i'd like to think I maybe inspired some people along the way such as Clarity, Trell, Sebsplex, JSilver, VbigB, Blasphemywebleed and Jtlant to name but a few. My apologies if I don't name everyone but I was helping out people on the forums and those who pm'd me with questions (and there were a lot!) during this period so there are too many to mention and remember. With more people creating renders a weight was lifted off my shoulders, it certainly wasn't my responsibility but to an extent it occasionally felt like it was as when I started there were very few people doing them or making them regularly. This also had the added benefit that because more people were creating renders it kept me on my toes and pushed me to create better ones myself. (thankfully so because as I mentioned previously, some of my early renders were awful!)

I don't know exactly how many renders i've created since the beginning, but with it now being twelve years later it's definitely over five hundred spread between the TEW, WMMA and CBH series of games. I think most of my TEW renders have been re-rendered and/or replaced since I started, which i'm more than happy about because even if the bad render I initially created filled up a spot for a while it then sparked an idea in someone else to create a better one!

For the recently released WMMA5 I created 100+ new renders and I re-rendered a bunch of my older ones that I still had the files for. They're easily some of the best renders i've ever created, in my opinion.

With that being said, i'm going out on top before this old dog is taken out behind the woodshed so it's time I "officially" hang up my rendering hat. The newer breed such as the likes of LoNdOn, Scottie, Blackman, DeBosco, shipshirt, willr0ck, King Bison and more (sorry I can't name everyone!) have proven they're able to create good renders so I know the future is bright and in good hands. The baton has been passed, keep up the good work! :)

But i'm still leaving on a 12-0 undefeated streak. ;)

(can you ever truly keep The Deadman down though?)

<p>Yeah, I feel you man. The old guard just has to hang em' up at some point, don't we? <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> I must've made 1500-2000 edits all throughout the years and I'm sure there were lots of edits that were originally your renders.</p><p> </p><p>

So rest.. in.. peace? <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

*stands and claps*

You're right. Your post showing off what you had made did get me into rendering and there always seemed a friendly rivalry between you, me, blashemywebleed and trell.

Over the years, we've all kind of drifted away. I believe Blas got a graphic design job, Trell still haunts the boards but i've not really spoken to him in years, and I wound up doing the whole marriage/child/separation/career thing. I do dust Daz off every now and again and post something random, but i've been unofficially retired for years.

We'll see you for TEW2018 i'm sure :)

<p>I am sorry to hear this but at least you made the decision on your own terms.</p><p> </p><p>

Thanks to the likes of you, who as you said, helped the likes of Trell (my render guru), inspired the "third generation" of renderers such as myself. The only thing I can do, outside of saying a massive thank you for your fantastic consistent work over the years, is to try and help the next wave of render creators myself.</p><p> </p><p>

All the best Taker.</p>

<p>We will miss your work. You were definitely one of my inspirations to start rendering. Funny that I randomly got directed here from another site when I was looking for management sims and I came across TEW2005. Had I not seen that and come across your work in the mod forums I likely wouldn't have even started rendering.</p><p> </p><p>

I've basically been semi-retired for a number of years now although I occasionally remove the rust and post something. A lot of the old guard has faded away but luckily there are others who are carrying the torch.</p>

It's always sad to see such a great contributor to this community as you to retire. I may not have posted much about your work, but as a long time lurker and already long time active user, it was always much appreciated. At least it's great to know that you will continue to be a part of this great community. Thanks for all the great work, man. It's good to know that the new generation has your seal of approval, it means the quality will continue.

  • 2 years later...
Thank you for all of the renders you've done Taker and also for running one of my favorite mafia games of all-time Movieland Massacre.

I actually forgot about my Mafia game until you mentioned it but i'm glad you liked it. I did have plans for a sequel, and who knows, I may try to run it one day...

I still have my role pm from 2010 in a folder. :D

Wolf, Self Aligned Elite Hunter

You're in a strange environment but you can see the opportunities for a good hunt. So many trophies you could collect during your time here. It'll be like shooting fish in a barrel... or people in a hotel.

Each night phase you must pm the name of someone you wish to kill.

You win when you are the sole surviving threat at night.

Just wanted to thank you for being cool. I know you mainly from Mafia back in the day and wanted to tell you you had the best "scramble" of any of the players back then. Was always fun to watch you talk yourself out of being lynched.

GG's and (if you are still thinking about running some mafia games Outlaw has something going on at another site now if you are interested).

Either way, thanks for the fun times and take care.
