Yes but it breaks kayfabe.

WWE have a clown from hell who travelled through time, into John Cena's mind, tortured Braun in his sex dungeon swamp before drowning him only for him to return completely fine and who just abducted a woman for a week without anybody caring at all. They also have an antifa group that shows up and causes CHAOS and destroy property but sends in word ahead of time to let everybody know that they're coming because they're apparently very considerate???

Meanwhile, Trent has a mother. One side is breaking kayfabe here and it's not AEW

Be completely honest, who do you think breaks kayfabe more? NXT or AEW?

And for the record, orange Cassidy is an insult to the wrestling business, and if you try and tell me he is normal and isn’t breaking kayfabe, something isn’t right.

How? His soft kicks aren't actually implied to hurt, and the moves he does are legitimate moves. His gimmick is that he doesn't care. Why's that break kayfabe?

He’s awesome because he isn’t normal. Pro wrestling has been around for nearly a century, heaven forbid people try something different.

He’s mental. Do you know anyone who is as idiotic and lazy as him? No you don’t! Who do you think breaks kayfabe more? NXT or AEW?

NXT, obviously? See: every single time someone goes up to the main roster and everybody comes out to applaud and hug them.

"In professional wrestling, kayfabe is the portrayal of staged events within the industry as "real" or "true", specifically the portrayal of competition, rivalries, and relationships between participants as being genuine and not staged."

You said you liked the 80s. Do you know anyone who is as patriotic and jacked up as Hogan? Do you know anyone who is as massive and scary as Andre? Do you know a cop who wrestles like Bossman?

WOW I missed a good conversation lol.

To add my two cents, wrestling in the 2010s onward is fundamentally different, by design. The internet and social media changed the industry as a whole, for the better IMO. Back in the day you'd never have wrestlers be interviewed and discuss why something happened, but that's simply not the case now.

The advent of the internet, specifically social media, forced wrestling to become self aware. The 4th wall was dismantled brick by brick. The performers are aware that the audience is aware of the nature of it. That's why some AEW storylines are like that. Modern wrestling NEEDS silliness and self awareness to keep the audience. Don't treat the audience like they are children and/or stupid. That's why AEW has been successful and why people like Orange Cassidy are so over. Hell, even Chris Jericho adapted and references his old characters and calls himself the Demo God.

If you don't like it anymore then hey that's your preference. However, it is never... EVER going back to the strict kayfabe of times past.

AEW was built on the back of The Elite and their show Being the Elite. The success of BTE was built on taking viewers backstage and "exposing the business." Except it was already exposed decades ago to everyone but young kids and ignorant casual viewers who hadn't figured it out yet. Even back in the 50s there were news articles calling out wrestling promotors for "fixing fights" lol.

And let's not forget that Vince McMahon himself admitted that it was fake. I think it was around Wrestlemania 4 or so when he did it.

I dont know if wrestling "needs" to be so silly. Everyone knows movies are fake, but not every successful movie breaks the fourth wall. Some do. Superhero movies in particular constantly stop the action for meta moments or post modern references or tension breaking jokes. And the action is silly and goofy and fake. AEW is going for that audience.

But theres another audience. There's an audience for serious wrestling. By which I mean not being slapped in the face with "it's fake lol" constantly. Let me enjoy the drama without tension breaking quips or spiderman referencing star wars or modern wrestlers quoting undertaker from 20 years ago to try to get a pop.

Theres room for both fans. Neither side is going to change the mind of the other.
