<strong>Hiranuma Makoto:</strong> Indeed! Eri Sato finally gets her chance to defeat Ochyio Iijima for the WINNOW Pure Heart and in the main event, the leader of Syndicate, Thea Davis, goes one on one against the first ever WINNOW Grand Champion, Chitose Ariwara!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Haniko Iseya, Toku Hayata and Hoshiko Tagawa vs Rika Tsujimura, Hoshiko Asai and Akuro Shionoya</strong></p><p>

Another multi woman tag featuring rookies, as is tradition, to open the show and this one had some of the best performing young lionesses on the WINNOW roster in it. The all-fuchsia pairing of Iseya and Hayata really shined in this one alongside the blue chip technician Tagawa as they took on senior rookie Rika Tsujimura and her team of Hoshiko Asai and Akura Shionoya. An even match with every woman getting her chance to shine, this one ended with Hayata hitting her finisher out of nowhere on Asai for the pin.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Haniko Iseya, Toku Hayata and Hoshiko Tagawa</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Winning Thrust Kick</strong></p><p><strong>

Syndicate (Laura Flame, Claire Winters & Selina Svelte) vs Yu Hashimoto and BATTLE BEASTS</strong></p><p>

With their leader booked to wrestle in the main event, the newly formed faction found themselves in action here against none other than Yu Hashimoto and the WINNOW Duet champions. The title-holding trio was dominant as expected, but the gaijin weren't shy at all about taking shortcuts, which really seemed to infuriate the audience before jeers turned to cheers as Hashimoto caught Svelte with the End Game for a flash comeback and victory.</p><p>

<strong>Winner: Yu Hashimoto and BATTLE BEASTS</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: The End Game [spinning Back Fist]</strong></p><p>

<img alt="mwL0z0W.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/mwL0z0W.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="aqw0BcD.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/aqw0BcD.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="eVnzbeS.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/eVnzbeS.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="8B2D2n5.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/8B2D2n5.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

Despite proving themselves as competent wrestlers, Syndicate also turned out to be sore losers as they attacked the celebrating trio from behind to beat them down. As soon as they lost the advantage of surprise though and BEAST Kaori began making a comeback, Syndicate played the chickensh*t heel card and rolled out of the ring, clearly wanting none of the towering Kaori or her allies.</p><p>

<strong>Romi Yamato & Rei Chikanatsu vs Faith McGee & Ariel Breaks</strong></p><p>

Now this was an unusual match, not so much because of the setup but because of the execution. The usually cheerful and bubble McGee and Breaks pushed the pace of the match and turned it into a spectacular display of spots, but frustrated as they were at their inability to score the pin, they soon started showing a nasty edge to their moves that essentially made them the heels in this match. This was further aided by the previous match and angle, leading fans to cheer for a Yamato and Chikanatsu comeback, which they got, leading to the masked one tapping out McGee to win.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Romi Yamato & Rei Chikanatsu</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Blue Crab Surprise [single Leg Boston Crab, applied after a backward roll to take down the opponent]</strong></p><p>

<img alt="mwL0z0W.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/mwL0z0W.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

WINNOW Pure Heart title match</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="NoBX4AM.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/NoBX4AM.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="8sEkkAa.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/8sEkkAa.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong>

Ochyio Iijima © vs Eri Sato</strong></p><p>

A drastically different bout than the one that came before it, this was a textbook strong style match that built upon the style, gimmicks and movesets of both participants. It wasn't slow and methodical, but it was hard hitting and realistic, almost like a shoot fight or staged MMA bout. Lots of strikes and counterstrikes, before stamina (and drama) dictated throwing some grappling and slams into the mix. Iijima ended up hitting her Knock Out Kick but somehow, Sato got a shoulder up just before the count of three, a rare feat since no one ever kicks out of that move. Shocked and frustrated, Iijima went back to her "Space Ace" days and climbed to the top turnbuckle in an attempt to pull off her old finisher, but Sato had a sudden rush of adrenaline to knock her down in time and hit her own Buzzsaw Kick finisher to finally score the pin and defeat her for the third time to win the gold.</p><p>

<strong>Winner AND NEW WINNOW Pure Heart champion: Eri Sato</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Buzzsaw Kick</strong></p><p>

<img alt="IqChfad.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/IqChfad.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="zPaHPzb.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/zPaHPzb.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="Meqzwhu.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/Meqzwhu.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

<strong>Chitose Ariwara vs Thea Davis</strong></p><p>

Although the main event was not for a championship, it had a story to tell and these women took their time to tell that story through their wrestling. Ariwara, the fan favourite former champion who had fallen on hard times since losing the gold, started the match hot as she tried to ascend back to the top. Thea Davis, now arguably WINNOW's top gaijin and probably the most hated person on the roster, was willing to cheat if that meant putting the brakes on her opponent and scoring a victory that would continue her momentum after forming Syndicate. The threat of outside involvement from Flame, Winters and Svelte was ever-present and it did add a sense of urgency and tension to this bout, but it was kept clean of outsiders as each woman pushed the other to her limits, with Davis reversing the Victory Roll and holding on to Ariwara's tights in order to secure the win.</p><p>

<strong>Winner: Thea Davis</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Pinfall (with a handful of tights)</strong></p><p>

<img alt="mwL0z0W.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/mwL0z0W.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="Meqzwhu.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/Meqzwhu.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

With fans roaring in disapproval, Davis got on the mic for the go-home promo and whether it was her cocky attitude or her (intentionally?) broken Japanese, she got a good reaction from the crowd as she claimed that she'd just beaten a former WINNOW Grand Champion and would soon do the same to the reigning title holder as well.</p><p>

It wasn’t specified if it was meant a shot at the top championship in the company of if rumors that a secondary singles title are to be believed.<br /></li><li>This was an action-all-over-the-place kind of match up with all six women working at a full pace. Selling was not high on the priority list as all of the women looked to hit their big spots.<br /></li><li>Woodchuck continues to captivate audiences with her plucky personality. Sure, CILL and OLLIE each have women’s titles, but those are just a piece of their larger company. The Campeónato del Mexico GDR is the top championship in the only promotion focused strictly on luchadoras.<br /></li><li>Blanca has become one of the top luchadoras in the world and has also been appearing on Podcasts recently celebrating the successes of luchadoras and how the world needs more of them. Mystery Pink has been on a roll since returning to GDR, her time in WINNOW was exactly what she needed. <br /></li><li>The two women went back and forth with neither of them really able to dominate the contest. Pink, the champion, was shown to be a quality champion but Blanca, a former champion herself, was shown to be able to stand toe to toe and be in the same league as the champ.<br /></li><li>Unlike some of the other matches, these two slowed it down a bit. They let the match build to the final four or five minutes when the offense really picked up and they dipped into their bag of tricks and trademark moves.<br /></li><li>Blanca hit a Diving Sunset Flip from the top rope that almost got her the victory but Pink was just able to kick out before the three. Mistrust, egos and some terrible timing almost cost Yamato and Davis the match;now that it's over, it all comes to a boil as the two argue, then get into a shoving contest. Davis is the first to attack and ends the show with a beatdown on the WINNOW Rising Champion while fans boo the leader of the Syndicate.

WINNOW announces a two-day event for the 2017 Joshi Royalty Summit

WINNOW:Japanese Women's Pro Wrestling surprised fans in 2016 when it organized a one-off charity event for the victims of that year's tsunami that struck Japan and it once more made waves in 2017 by announcing that it's annual Joshi Royalty Summit will be taking place over two days, one dedicated to tag team action and one for its singles tournament. This year's brackets feature some well-known names that justify the event's name, as well as some interesting pairings and potential matches, so let's break it down.

WINNOW Duet champions BATTLE Takenouchi and BEAST Kaori, collectively known as BATTLE BEASTS, will be participating in this year's tag tournament. Their first opponents are scheduled to be "The Pain from the Ukraine" Karen Bilous and "The Black Widow" Zofia Jankovic. Both women have wrestled for WINNOW in the past, but never as a team; it is in European Wrestling All-Stars that they began working together, after Jankovic ended Bilous' second reign with the EWA Women's title to start her own second run with the belt. A team founded on fighting spirit and mutual respect, it remains to be seen whether they can defeat their less experienced opponents or whether the WINNOW Duet champions will be able to prove why they hold the tag team gold.

Arguably the most successful joshi tag team today with three reigns as 5 Star Tag Team champions, Birds of Prey will be meeting WWA and QAW representatives Crackdown in an explosive, high flying and hard hitting first round match. Fuyuko Higa and Gemmei Oonishi boast some impressive skills, teaming experience and plenty of success as singles competitors to boot, but the question remains whether their singles trajectories has been a detriment on their effectiveness together. Juana Huracan is a former WWA World champion herself and "the New York Badass" Toni Parissi brings a lot of power to the mix, so this match is guaranteed to be something special.

Another pairing that's found success in Japan as well as Mexico and the United States, Tex-Mex are also the reigning WWA World Tag Team champions, making them a solid pick to win the entire tournament. Their opponents are GDR standouts Queen Amazon and La Hija del Diablo, who are very familiar with their opponents in this one. With Amazon ruling the GDR roost and Hija itching to catch up with her partner's success, the Queens of the Damned might be pulling a surprise win here.

Representing the Syndicate, Laura Flame and Claire Winters entered this year's Joshi Royalty Tag Team Summit tournament under the name "Fire & Ice". While they are looking to impress and dominate, they may soon come to regret their decision against their opening round opponents, Team SUB. Chiyeko Kita and Etsuko Arihyoshi have been one of the best joshi tag teams, with two reigns as 5 Star Tag Team champions to show for it and they are in this to win this.

zPaHPzb.jpg

The inaugural WINNOW Grand Champion, Chitose Ariwara could not be held out of this year's tournament. Last year she made it to the finals while still holding that belt, only to lose to Joanne Rodriguez who would later on also defeat her for the title. This year, hers is a story of redemption and even if she doesn't manage to win it all, she could be leaving with a victory over the returning Rodriguez or one of the three WINNOW singles champions, thus earning herself a title shot in the future.

rP9LuoR.jpg

Romi Yamato is the current WINNOW Rising Champion and she'll be looking to prove that potential of hers in this year's tournament. Coming hot off a singles victory over joshi legend Tomoko Nagatsuka in Mexico, Yamato enters the tournament with a head full of steam and all the momentum in the world, but the question remains of just how far will that be enough to carry her.

8sEkkAa.jpg

After a year of struggles, Eri Sato finally managed to win her first title when she recently beat Ochiyo Iijima for the WINNOW Pure Heart belt. Sato will seek to continue her winning ways in this tournament and with fans consistently behind her and her Cinderella story, she could be a dark horse in this race.

A0XDREq.jpg

A huge name to enter this year's Joshi Royalty Summit, Megumi Nakajima is mostly associated with 5SSW, where she is a Grand Slam champion. After a tag team title run there with DEVIL Karube, as well as two All-Asian and two World championships there, Nakajima was announced as a participant and quickly became one of the favourites to win this year but how well can she handle the WINNOW style and a roster of unfamiliar opponents?

qIYQtpx.jpg

Representing GDR and lucha libre, Estrella Blanca returns to Japan for this year's tournament. Her main asset is her unpredictability, as all other competitors will be unfamiliar with her moves and style. Combine that with pure skill and a ton of experience and Estrella Blanca could end up surprising more than one opponent.

aqw0BcD.jpg

As the reigning WINNOW Grand Champion, Yu Hashimoto wouldn't miss this for the world. With that spot comes a heavy burden, as she not only has to prove herself as the best, she also has to look out as anyone defeating her could be challenging for her title as well. With an arsenal heavy on strikes and suplexes, Hashimoto is the only participant (alongside Eri Sato) who doesn't primarily classify as a high flyer. Whether that will prove to be an advantage or disadvantage remains to be seen.

NVsHmIw.jpg

If you want to discuss joshi royalty, Joanne Rodriguez can't be out of the conversation. A regular and a champion with both 5SSW and WINNOW in Japan, a star with AAA and QAW in America, known in Mexico thanks to GDR, Rodriguez is the most experienced and most well travelled person in women's pro wrestling today on top of holding the WWA World title. However, that means she's got a heavy schedule, lots of wear and tear but little time to recover. She's a favourite to win, she did so last year but can she do it back to back, while wrestling three matches in one night?

Meqzwhu.jpg

Thea Davis has been impressive around the world, but she really made her mark when she betrayed her former friend Joanne Rodriguez and kicked her out of WINNOW to form the Syndicate. This will be the first time these two women meet since that incident in what is bound to be a heated, emotional and very personal match. Davis has a point to prove and her Syndicate allies to fall back on, but she has been scrutinized on her own ability and this tournament will prove if she has what it takes.

<strong>Hiranuma Makoto:</strong> Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to WINNOW’s biggest show of the year! This year we're going bigger and better, extending it to a two night show starting right now with the WINNOW Joshi Royalty Tag Team Summit!</p><p>

<strong>Yuko Okui:</strong> Two nights means more time for each tournament and I have to say, some big names participating tonight, it really does justice to the name on the marquee.</p><p>

<strong>Hiranuma Makoto:</strong> Yes indeed, some proper joshi legends in action tonight, I'm itching to see which team will be standing tall at the end of the night as this year's winner.</p><p>

<strong>Yuko Okui:</strong> Let's start the show and find out!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Quarterfinal round match</strong></p><p><strong>

Tex-Mex vs Queens of the Damned</strong></p><p>

The opening match featured the WWA World Tag Team champions Tex-Mex, who the Japanese crowd is quite familiar with, against the GDR representatives, Queens of the Damned. This was Hija del Diablo’s debut in Japan and she carried the urgency her matches in Mexico have begun having lately as she’s trying to catch up with her more successful partner, allowing the duo to blitzkrieg their way into a big win in under five minutes and potentially claim a future shot at the WWA World Tag Team titles.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Queens of the Damned</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Amazonian Powerbomb</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="87E3trK.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/87E3trK.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Quarterfinal round match</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="G79LIV1.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/G79LIV1.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="X7aUwGm.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/X7aUwGm.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="4pzceIE.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/4pzceIE.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="gTwjB2U.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/gTwjB2U.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong>

Crackdown vs Birds of Prey</strong></p><p>

Keeping up the tone of the opening contest, this match was equally fast and spectacular, full of impressive high flying moves back and forth. This did however seem to throw “The New York Badass” Toni Parissi off, as her style and moveset is mostly based around brawling and the Birds of Prey quickly picked that up, zoning in with supreme effectiveness to cut the ring in half before they hit their impressive tag team finisher for the pin.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Birds of Prey</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Death from Above [Death Valley Driver/Double Foot Stomp combination]</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="rCrbMWQ.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/rCrbMWQ.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

BATTLE BEASTS vs Bilous & Jankovic</strong></p><p>

The first match of the night to feature a resident WINNOW team, the Duet champions were in action here against the Eastern European pairing of Bilous and Jankovic. Unlike the previous two bouts, there was little high flying to be found here. All four women worked a typical strong style match from bell to bell, with BEAST Kaori once again impressing with her power and scoring the win over Bilous thanks to a huge Jack-Knife Powerbomb.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Battle Beasts</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Jack-Knife Powerbomb.</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="87E3trK.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/87E3trK.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Quarterfinal round match</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="EsBcLPE.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/EsBcLPE.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="R45jaMI.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/R45jaMI.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="xZALP4v.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/xZALP4v.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="nNdK7TO.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/nNdK7TO.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><strong>w</strong><img alt="suPaLQd.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/suPaLQd.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong>

Team SUB vs Fire & Ice (with Selina Svelte)</strong></p><p>

The Syndicate made quite the appearance here, accompanied to the ring by Selina Svelte who frequently interjected herself in the match to help her newly formed team against the veterans (and heavy favourites) Team SUB. This kind of behaviour infuriated the audience, further establishing the Syndicate as a gaijin heel faction, with Svelte essentially causing her team to get disqualified once the referee had enough of their antics. Whether indifferent or infuriated, Fire & Ice still assaulted Team SUB after the match was over, garnering themselves even more heat from the crowd.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Team SUB</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Disqualification</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="IqChfad.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/IqChfad.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Semifinal round match</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="T0rEREo.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/T0rEREo.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="WKpgYMl.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/WKpgYMl.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="EsBcLPE.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/EsBcLPE.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="R45jaMI.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/R45jaMI.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong>

Queens of the Damned vs Team SUB</strong></p><p>

Still reeling from the match, Team SUB immediately had to wrestle again as we moved on into the semifinals. With the fans behind them for good, they showcased plenty of fighting spirit as they tried to hold their ground against the powerhouse offense of Queen Amazon, who sought to seal the deal and get another quick win for her team before the opposition could recuperate. Sadly, a badly timed tope from Hija del Diablo was all the veterans needed to turn things around and barely after the five minute mark, she found herself tapping out to Arihyoshi’s innovative submission finisher.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Team SUB</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Arihyoshi Lockdown [Cross between an Inverted Sleeper and a standard Abdominal Stretch]</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="pyf9Pt4.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/pyf9Pt4.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Semifinal round match</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="eVnzbeS.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/eVnzbeS.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="8B2D2n5.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/8B2D2n5.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="4pzceIE.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/4pzceIE.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="gTwjB2U.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/gTwjB2U.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong>

BATTLE BEASTS vs Birds of Prey</strong></p><p>

The hard hitting match in the opening round had clearly taken its toll on the WINNOW team, but they showed the toughness to keep fighting here, never giving any ground or giving up. Birds of Prey were the smaller team here, but they used their speed to their advantage and thanks to their individual and teaming experience, were able to knock BEAST Kaori off the apron and focus their attack on BATTLE Takenouchi, who gave it everything she had to stay alive but fell to a surprise cradle around the ten minute mark once the numbers game caught up to her focus and reflexes.</p><p>

<strong>Winners: Birds of Prey</strong></p><p><strong>

Finish: Surprise Cradle</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><img alt="pyf9Pt4.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/pyf9Pt4.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>

Birds of Prey vs Team SUB</strong></p><p>

No strangers to each other (or fans of joshi puroresu, for that matter), the two teams saw eye to eye once again in a spectacular finish to the 2017 WINNOW Joshi Royalty Tag Team Summit. With no time limit or any following matches to worry about, the competitors took their time to pace themselves and approach this match with a strategic gameplan. A classic slow burner of a match, this one built up the tension and drama masterfully, with several spots harkening back to the teams’ history and their long standing feud in 5SSW, where they’ve got a total of five title reigns between them. It took over twenty minutes, which is already a lot when you’ve wrestled two more matches earlier in the night, but Birds of Prey were finally able to score the win in spectacular fashion in a big moment of collective rejoicing once the count reached three.</p><p>

Hiranuma Makoto: Welcome back fans of joshi puroresu, to night two of the 2017 WINNOW Joshi Royalty Summit!

Yuko Okui: It's all about singles action tonight and judging by what we saw at the Tag Team Summit two nights ago, we're in for an exciting tournament!

Hiranuma Makoto: We regret to inform you that sadly, Joanne Rodriguez was unable to fly to Japan in time, so she will not be participating in the tournament as announced. In her place, Rei Chikanatsu will be looking to make this rare opportunity count!

Yuko Okui: I'm excited to see how this all plays out!

Quarterfinal round match

Estrella Blanca vs Yu Hashimoto

The opening contest featured none other than the reigning WINNOW Grand Champion facing off against GDR star Estrella Blanca, who has wrestled for WINNOW in the past and was thus well received by the audience. Hashimoto attempted to get a quick pin by overwhelming her opponent with a flurry of strikes, but the elusive Blanca made good use of her speed to create the necessary distance and pull off her arsenal of high flying moves. All it took was an ill-timed springboard cutter though and Hashimoto hit the End Game to connect with her opponent’s jaw mid-flight in an impressive finish to the opening match.

Winner: Yu Hashimoto

Finish: The End Game [spinning Back Fist]

Rei Chikanatsu vs Thea Davis

Chikanatsu filled in for Joanne Rodriguez here as the WWA World champion had been facing some issues with her visa and work permit in Japan, neither of which were issued in time for her to compete in this year’s Joshi Royalty Summit. The initial surprise and curiosity soon turned into excitement, as Chikanatsu told the story of trying to hit the Blue Crab Surprise on her long legged opponent, the two women displaying that intangible magic that can turn a match from really good to great. Davis also put her natural athleticism to good use for some impressive spots, always pausing to pose and generate heat from the crowd in between, a tactic that came to a boil in the finish as the leader of the Syndicate pulled a pin off her hair to stab Chikanatsu in the eye while the referee was busy re-applying the padding on a corner she had intentionally exposed earlier to create the distraction.

Winner: Thea Davis

Finish: Pinfall after using a foreign object

Chitose Ariwara vs Romi Yamato

Never before in WINNOW’s near two year existence have Ariwara and Yamato faced each other one on one, a fact the announcing team made sure to hype up during this match, a clash between the former WINNOW Grand Champion and the current, upcoming WINNOW Rising Champion. Both women certainly understood the significance and showcased the ego, drive and skill appropriate to the situation as they pulled out all the stops to have the most spectacular match possible. This, in many ways, mirrored the opening contest, although Yamato had some solid technical skills on top of her striking game while Ariwara certainly is more over with the WINNOW crowd than Estrella Blanca. In the end though, Yamato’s finishing maneuver proved to be just too much and WINNOW’s former #1 lady found herself staring at the lights for the three count, out of the tournament and further down on a losing spiral.

Winner: Romi Yamato

Finish: Yamatotal [Cross-Arm German Suplex with a Bridge]

Eri Sato vs Megumi Nakajima

With J-Ro absent and Estrella Blanca eliminated earlier, it was down to Nakajima to make sure the rest of the tournament would feature more than just WINNOW’s usual cast of characters. The 5SSW mainstay brought her usual style of graceful violence, mixing smooth high flying with elegant slams and suplexes in a beautiful dance of death. Sato did her best and although she held her ground against the veteran, she couldn’t block or escape the dreaded straightjacket. Still, both women were applauded for their performance and the competitors shook hands after the match in a show of mutual respect.

Winner: Megumi Nakajima

Finish: Nakajima Straight Jacket [Tiger Suplex]

Thea Davis vs Yu Hashimoto

Since the Syndicate’s formation, Davis and her girls have targeted Hashimoto in dreams of knocking her off the top of the mountain, so having the two women face off here was a very intense and personal matchup indeed. The existing drama led to a pretty intense confrontation before the opening bell even, as Hashimoto assaulted her opponent before introductions were over, much to the delight of the fans.

xZALP4v.jpgnNdK7TO.jpgsuPaLQd.jpg

Davis had her share of surprises too though and the Syndicate made its presence felt, using gang tactics to harass the WINNOW Grand Champion as all three non-competing members got involved in various stages of the match. Hashimoto withstood the onslaught somehow though and just as Davis was (over)confidently closing in for the kill, she exploded into her finisher for the pin, literally punching her ticket to the finals of the Joshi Royalty Summit.

Winner: Yu Hashimoto

Finish: The End Game [spinning Back Fist]

Megumi Nakajima vs Romi Yamato

For all the drama and shenanigans in the previous match, this was the polar opposite, a clean, competitive contest that gave fans the quality, sports like joshi wrestling they enjoy. It helped that the two women seemed to click really well in the ring and after having taken out one champion before, Nakajima hit her finisher on the WINNOW Rising Champion as well to win the match, setting herself up for the big finale against the WINNOW Grand Champion.

Winner: Megumi Nakajima

Finish: Nakajima Straight Jacket [Tiger Suplex]

Final round match

A0XDREq.jpg25UZG0h.pngaqw0BcD.jpg

Megumi Nakajima vs Yu Hashimoto

It all came down to this. Would the WINNOW Grand Champion make it to the finish line and fend off the outsider, or would Nakajima go all the way to win the tournament with three wins over WINNOW’s three singles title holders? With all this buildup, on top of their familiarity with each other thanks to their time in 5SSW, the two women took the time to pace themselves and put together a classic “King’s Road” style of a match, with Hashimoto really selling the lingering effects of the Syndicate’s attacks earlier. This uphill struggle setup really established her as a fan favourite and the more Nakajima went on without being able to get a pin or submission, the more frustrated she became, meaning her offense became more vicious, thus enhancing the story of Hashimoto’s fighting spirit. It took twenty one minutes and a few seconds, but after a series of big moves, counters and false finishes, Hashimoto broke out of the Nakajima Straight Jacket and spun around to crush her opponent with her back fist for the 1-2-3.

Winner: Yu Hashimoto

Finish: The End Game [spinning Back Fist]

Much like the end of the Joshi Royalty Tag Team Summit two days prior, Crusher Ichihara presented the trophy to her protege in a pretty emotional moment. Alas, the high wasn’t meant to last, because instead of Lioness Mushashibo joining them in the ring

Meqzwhu.jpgxZALP4v.jpgnNdK7TO.jpgsuPaLQd.jpg

The Syndicate came out to crash the party, attacking not just an exhausted Hashimoto but also Ichihara herself, a blatant move of disrespect that really seemed to strike a nerve with the live crowd.

eVnzbeS.jpg8B2D2n5.jpg

The save was made by BATTLE BEASTS, who've also had issues with the Syndicate in the past (also, many hail BEAST Kaori as the monster joshi heel successor to Ichihara's mantle), leading to a hasty retreat by the gaijin. The show ended with a promo from Hashimoto, announcing the formation of a new group that would finally put an end to the Syndicate's antics and pointing to everyone in the ring with her, she revealed they shall be known as the Kinki Krush Krew, or Kinki 3K!

Alina America versus Jaguar Queen

America was making her second appearance in GDR here against veteran luchadora Jaguar Queen. Jaguar Queen has been a staple of the GDR roster since it’s very first show and with rumors continuing to swirl that GDR will be introducing a new championship at the beginning of 2018, a win here would raise her stock greatly. This wasn’t a smooth match by any means, the crowd still doesn’t really know who America is, and despite her being attractive, charismatic, and talented, their lack of knowing who she is kept them from getting invested. Jaguar Queen did well enough, but she’s not a luchadora who stands out from the pack really, but her Butterfly Powerbomb was good enough to get the victory.

In a poor match, Jaguar Queen defeated Alina America in 7:44 by pinfall with a Butterfly Powerbomb.

“The Mayan Mauler” Ursula Saez versus Poison Ivy

Ursula Saez and Poison Ivy have never met in singles action before tonight. The two women are both major players in GDR and this was a match that had championship implications. Saez attacked Ivy with a style that would fit in 5SWW more than WINNOW or GDR. Hard hitting, ultra physical, while Ivy tried to use a blend of aerial and technical wrestling to keep Saez off balance. Ivy countered a Saez Tilt-A-Whirl something or other with a hurricanrana and then a big drop kick and a Standing Shooting Star Press that got Ivy the win.

In a decent match, Poison Ivy defeated Ursula Saez in 9:34 by pinfall.

Kalliope Woodchuck and Guest & Taylor w/ Lucia Valiente versus Francisca Ramos and Ibanez & Carpenter

A big six woman tag pitting former Tag Team Champions and Woodcuck against three young luchadoras -- Ramos being the only graduate of GDR’s dojo and Ibanez and Carpenter being two young, highly touted prospects. It was a good match. Guest has turned into an exceptional worker that has all the makings of a star. The audience really responds to her and she has the skills to back it up. Ramos is also developing into a solid hand who might never be a breakout star, but should remain gainfully employed for her career. This was a back and forth, open kind of match with few tags and a lot of spots that gave each woman the opportunity to shine. Ramos even got the rollup victory when she pinned Sarah Taylor and used a fistful of tights to do so.

In a decent match, Francisca Ramos and Ibanez & Carpenter defeated Kalliope Woodchuck and Guest & Taylor in 14:04 when Francisca Ramos defeated Sarah Taylor by pinfall with a handful of tights.

In terms of in-ring work, Maria Guest was head and shoulders above everyone else.

Velvet Suarez versus “The Franchise” Brooke Tyler

The former Canadian Champion, Brooke Tyler continues to look impressive and Suarez continues to build some momentum. Both women are firmly entrenched in the midcard but both women could be more than that if they got some wins under their belts. Tyler was bigger and stronger than Suarez and used her size to control the match whereas Suarez got her offense off in short bursts of impressive athleticism that allowed Tyler to be the base for a lot of moves. Suarez hit a Tornado DDT followed up by a sky-kissing Moonsault that got her the win.

In a decent match, Velvet Suarez defeated Brooke Tyler in 9:50 by pinfall with a Moonsault.

Raquel Alvarado w/ Vinny Cruz versus Joanne Rodriguez ©

For the first time ever, Raquel Alvarado stepped into the ring with the legendary Joanne Rodriguez. Rodriguez was unable to compete in Japan for the Joshi Royalty Summit, but the reigning World’s Champion looked good against Alvarado. It was announced at the start of this that Alvarado was representing Cruz Enterprises -- so it looks like Vinny Cruz has formed an official trio with Alvarado and the reigning Tag champs. Alvarado got off some nasty looking offense here and Rodriguez sold like a million bucks before making her big come back and hitting the J-Rocker to get the win.

In a decent match, Joanne Rodriguez defeated Raquel Alvarado in 15:03 by pinfall with a J-Rocker. Joanne Rodriguez makes defence number 5 of her WWA World title.

The Queens of the Damned versus Tex-Mex ©

The main event of the evening. The fourth time these teams have met. The second time the World Titles have been on the line. The first time the World Titles were on the line, Tex-Mex retained, but at the Joshi Royalty Tag Summit, the Queens of the Damned were able to get the victory. This match was definitely the story of two teams that know each other very well. The action was good and consistent and there were lots of counters and blocks to moves that each team saw coming. They took their time building the crowd into a frenzy and when Houston Handley leapt off the top rope but was caught by Queen Amazon and driven into the mat with an Amazonian Powerbomb, the crowd knew it was over and the Queens of the Damned were now World Tag Team Champions.

In a decent match, The Queens of the Damned defeated Tex-Mex in 24:39 when Queen Amazon defeated Houston Handley by pinfall with an Amazonian Powerbomb. The Queens of the Damned win the WWA World Tag Team titles.

Queen Amazon carried the match in terms of in-ring performance.
