The Latino Kings versus The American Cobras ©

I was pretty happy with how this match turned out. The Cobras were coming in as heels from the mainland. The Latino Kings were our local tag champs trying to take that next step. It was a fast paced match up. Lots of Japanese inspired stuff from the Cobras early on. The Kings took over and Rudy really shined. He looked like a great babyface here -- the kind of babyface that the fans were really into. He’d come along way in FCW. The Kings almost had the match won when Samoan Demolition came to the ring and distracted them and allowed Marvel Malloy to roll Rudy Velasquez up for the win.

In a decent match, The American Cobras defeated The Latino Kings in 12:15 when Marvel Malloy defeated Rudy Velasquez by pinfall by using underhanded tactics. The American Cobras make defence number 1 of their COTT World Tag Team titles.

Molokai Milk versus Boriken Love Machine Jr

This was strictly designed to give Milk a win. I like Love Machine Jr. but I’m not big on lucha libre and I don’t want FCW to become a haven for luchadores. With that being said, Boriken makes sense to have on the roster and he did a good job selling for Milk and making the big Hawaiian look impressive. Boriken at the Hawaiian Hammer and The Milk Man got another win.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Molokai Milk defeated Boriken Love Machine Jr in 8:16 by pinfall with a Hawaiian Hammer.

Ricochet Ramone versus "The Real Deal" Rob Reynolds

A solid mid card match from two guys who aren’t going to get poached anytime soon. Rob may do some tours of Japan -- he’s got a style that fits Japan probably better than it does here, but I’m not worried about exclusive deals for these two. I’m slowly trying to build Ramone into something. He could be a good underdog babyface for us that I could maybe elevate. Maybe put in a tag team down the line and see if that will work. I’m not sure what to do with Rob. He’s a good hand but he doesn’t do anything that makes me scream *make this guy a star* or anything like that. Time will have to tell, I guess.

Ramone hit his beautiful Ricochet Senton in a short match and he got the win and the crowd was okay with this. He’s still getting over and both of them did their job here.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Ricochet Ramone defeated Rob Reynolds in 5:41 by pinfall with a Ricochet Senton.

Former seven-time Puerto Rican Champion, the pillar of Puerto Rico himself, Puerto Rican Power came to the ring. I sat at the table right off the entry way, my eyes glued to the very small monitor that we used to watch the matches. Rico Santana was next to me. The boss picked up a microphone and he addressed what happened last month with Prometheus. He told the fans how upset he was with himself. He’d been sick to his stomach. He hadn’t been able to sleep. He kept reliving it -- not because he was scared of Prometheus, but because he let his guard down and he let his people down. Prometheus allowed Texas Pete to steal the Puerto Rican Championship. Prometheus allowed Texas Pete to steal from him and from the island. That could not be tolerated. So Puerto Rican Power is making it his mission to get revenge on Prometheus. To slay the unslayable. To stop the unstoppable. It is his new mission. Pete and the Puerto Rican Championship can wait. The boss is on a mission for vengeance.

The people were into every word. They believed everything he said. It was a masterclass in a local promo from a guy trying to sell tickets to a match next month. Hopefully we would sell more tickets.

Lion Catchers Club versus The 937lb Express & Bull Wrecker presented by Carl Batch

I had been building to this match. Three babyfaces I had a lot of hope in and three big bad beat-em-up-bruise-em-bad heels. This was everything that was advertised. The Lion Catchers Club tried to wrestle the big men down and the big men kept trying to use their size and power to control the match. Ox looked like a star here. The big man, at almost five hundred pounds, controlled the ring and let the three faces bump off of him and it was great. There were several moments where it looked like the Lion Catchers Club was going to pull it off but then Ox hit a big powerslam and got his feet up on the ropes -- a ridiculous-looking kind of thing but man did it get heat to see a guy that size cheat like that to get the win and become one third of the first Trios Champions.

In a decent match, Bull Wrecker and The 937lb Express defeated The Lion Catcher Club (Mark Griffin, Kip Keenan and Nate DeMarcus) in 13:22 when Ox Mastadon defeated Nate DeMarcus by pinfall while using the ropes for leverage. Bull Wrecker and The 937lb Express win the FCW Trios titles.

The newly minted Puerto Rican Champion and his ally, Handsome Stranger, came to the ring early. Pete let it be known that he was going to be on top of the mountain for a long time and with friends like Handsome Stranger, he knew he had people watching his back. People who were going to make sure he didn’t get screwed or robbed. There was a new era in the Islands and Texas Pete was ushering it in.

The Puerto Rican Boys versus Texas Pete & Handsome Stranger

A good tag team match that was designed to tease the future. I had plans for Island Boy Apollo. I wanted him to become our big babyface. We didn’t have any *young* babyface stars. Some would argue that Bradford Peverell was a star and he was a draw, but he wasn’t a guy I could build the Island around. He could talk and work and all that, but I needed a hometown babyface. Someone from the Island. That is what Puerto Rico really got behind. Power and Russell were both on the wrong side of forty, with the former closing in on fifty faster than he’d like to admit. So I was building to Apollo. At twenty-seven, he was ready to take that next step. This was an opportunity to get him ready. He looked great in the match. Pete and Stranger made him look great and Pete took the Welcome to the Island and the pinfall. I was hesitant to have my champion take the fall, but I wanted to set up for the singles match that was planned for next month -- and Pete’s promos and heat-getting ability was so good that I wasn’t worried about his ability to stay over.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The Puerto Rican Boys defeated Texas Pete and Handsome Stranger in 13:56 when Island Boy Apollo defeated Texas Pete by pinfall with a Welcome To The Island.

"The Tap Out Artist" Billy Russell versus Jay Chord ©

The main event was fantastic. It had sold out the monitor, as they say. Everyone wanted to see this. Russell was getting his first opportunity to challenge for a World Championship, Jay had been on a tear as World Champion. He was looking to make his seventh defence of the belt. They tore the house down. Chord played the arrogant, “Big League Star” perfectly. He sneered and looked offended to even be here. He looked like his father did when I first saw him live. Russell played the smaller grappler -- the submission expert who just had to get ahold of a body part long enough to lock something on and it would be all she wrote. Chord refused to let it happen. They told a great story. Russell locked in a Guillotine Choke that looked like it was going to put Chord out -- no one has escaped a Russell submission in the eleven months I’ve been booking but Chord powered out and immediately hit the Cradle Piledriver and got the victory and the crowd was angry and they were pissed off but they had just witnessed a classic contest and Chord had proven -- at least for tonight -- that he was in the upper echelon of professional wrestlers.

In an exceptional match, Jay Chord defeated Billy Russell in 22:22 by pinfall with a Cradle Piledriver. Jay Chord makes defence number 7 of his COTT World Heavyweight title.

The man known as "The Playboy" poured himself a stiff drink. It had been a long eleven months. Not a bad eleven months -- just long. He was a man from the South. He was not a man from the Island. Even after eleven months here, he was still an outsider. He had expected that. He was office and that meant the boys didn't want to hang out with him. He wasn't particularly close to his boss. He liked him well enough but they didn't make social calls on one another. That meant that most nights, Jake sat in his apartment overlooking the ocean with a drink he poured himself and listened to the waves roll over the sandy beaches. </p><p> </p><p>

He took a deep drink. He was probably a bit homesick. He propped his bare feet up on the cool metal railing of his balcony and reached for the cigar sititng in his ash tray. He took a puff. Twenty years into the business and this was his first extended stay outside of South Carolina. He puffed on his cigar. He exhaled the smoke into the air. He missed home. The biscuits and gravy. The Waffle Houses. The proper barbecue. He took another drag off his cigar and then took another drink. The end of the year was closing in and the "Playboy" was happy with the direction of the company. They were really growing. Slow and steady.</p><p> </p><p>

Before the main event, Texas Pete comes to the ring. The wild cowboy cuts a promo that isn’t really intelligible. You can’t really follow what he’s saying, but damn it is effective. So effective at getting the crowd riled up for the match with Island Boy Apollo. Pete snarls through the promo. And the crowd is into everything.

The year came to a close and Jake Sawyer counted down from ten like a bar full of people. The bar roared with the ball dropped and the champagne popped. It was a celebration. 2016 was rolling into 2017 and people were happy. Another year of successes and failures. Of ups and downs. Of joys and sadness. Jake was no different than the rest. In January of 2016, he had moved to Puerto Rico with a pipe dream. A dream of becoming respected in the wrestling business. He wanted to rebuild his reputation and prove his mettle and in twelve shows he had at least gotten some credibility back. It was a small body of work, but it was a body of work he was proud of. He had established Texas Pete as a viable main event star -- one that despite his volatile nature had proven to be valuable. Xavi and the Samoan Demolition were well on their way to being bankable members of the roster. Island Boy Apollo was ready to take the next leap. Mark Griffin, Kip Keenan, Nate DeMarcus, Ox Mastadon, Bull Wrecker -- they were all waiting in the wings for opportunities. The Latino Kings were still effective. The boss was very pleased with his performance. They were making small amounts of money each month. Nothing fancy. Nothing extravagant. Nothing that would win them any awards in the year-end polls from the wrestling writers of the world. They wouldn’t get noticed, he was sure of that -- but he was incredibly happy. Guys like Phil Vibert didn’t think he would last the year. Phil Vibert and others were certain he would be fired and fail and be a joke once again.

Yet the year was ending and Jake was firmly entrenched as the match-maker for Puerto Rico. He took a long drink from his glass and celebrated with strangers speaking a mixture of Spanish and English. He was getting a cursory understanding of Spanish -- his command of English was also suspect to many people. The heavy Southern drawl making him sound somewhat cartoonish. Here in Puerto Rico it made him a great heel manager. He took another drink and dodged a dancing couple that was lost in the bliss of alcohol and hormones and the New Year. Jake took another drink and looked around. There were plenty of people here. Couples and singles. People looking and people hoping to be found. He wasn’t sure which he was. A man looking or a man hoping to be found. Either way, he doubted he would be going home alone tonight. It was the New Year after all and even though he was closing in on forty he had a good head of hair, a nice smile and low standards. He took another drink and set his now empty glass down. He really was liking Puerto Rico.

I'm going to go ahead and announce that I'm putting this diary into hiatus. By posting this show, I'm up-to-date with where I'm at in the save game and really there are just other saves/diaries I'm more interested in than this one. The first like, six or eight shows were really fun, but then FCW just kind of became 'eh' to me. It was my first attempt at booking them and I didn't want to get rid of the roster but there are a lot of guys that I just am not behind. So I'm just going to take an extended break and see if I can get some fresh ideas for where I want to go (with the exception of the Heavyweight Title which I still have booked out for several months, so I know where it is going) The People's title and Tag Title programs wrapped at this show with the big title changes so it's a good spot to leave it. I've made Texas Pete a redeemed star for a local company, I've got Samoan Demolition over as a solid tag team (coming in with zero popularity, they are quite over) and Xavi has been firmly established as well.
