WHAT'S THIS!?

This project is about
converting ALL Cornellverse worker images into a .gif
format and having their background erased so that the TEW2020 playerbase can take advantage of the new feature in the game that came with TEW2016:
New Picture Formats & Automatic Custom Backgrounds!

From Dev. Journal of TEW2016: "
Feb 03: New Picture Formats & Automatic Custom Backgrounds. As well as JPG format, the game now also gives the option to support BMP and GIF pictures. One advantage of this is that the game now offers automatic custom backgrounds for transparent GIFs. For example, if you view a worker who has a transparent GIF picture in a company specific screen (i.e. a roster screen) then the background behind him will automatically be that company's logo - this essentially creates a custom background wherever that worker goes."

Further patches during TEW2016 beta applied this to the rest of the screens aswell: Match and Angle booking, running the show screens and such.

In TEW2020, this feature was expanded further - if a worker belongs to a stable, it will show the logo of the stable in the background instead of the promotion logo. Pretty cool, huh? Patch #8 also expanded upon the feature, adding the stable logo to event booking aswell.

AFTERWORD:

On a personal note,
this is my tribute to the amazing GDS community and to the TEW series of games
. To Adam Ryland, to all the people who have contributed to the series by creating all kinds of content, ranging from images to diaries to logos & banners, all sorts of graphics, buttons, skins, mods and databases. You guys are awesome and this game wouldn't be the same without you. It really wouldn't.

This took a lot of hours back in 2016 and now again in 2020 since there were hundreds upon hundreds of new renders and renamed files. I went through each of those 4,351 images and did my best at making them transparent. I am no image edit software expert and most of my work is based on madness and persistence. I just really like the feature and can't play without it. Now that the pack is complete, I can finally start playing
:D

Since there were thousands of images and the quality ranged from horrendous to amazing
, so did my handiwork
so if you spot an image that's not good looking
, or an image where there's bits and pieces of blue background still floating around, or if you think an image needs a rework,
don't hesitate to say so
, I'll be happily providing updated content patches to this project if needs be. I already spotted a few myself..
:o

Also due to the limitations of the 150x150 resolution, I had to result to artistic shortcuts with some images - you'll find that some workers have lost bits of hair or props, especially if they are 1-4 pixels wide (headset parts, hair, other facial props). I do hope that you'll enjoy the pack nonetheless.
:)

I also prefer this to the blue background, but apparently people think it's somewhat nostalgic. :o

Anyhow didn't someone release a script to do this automatically? It was posted in the render thread but I never got it to work.

.. You've gotta be kidding me. :p I want more info before I start doing it the dumb way.

Are you referring to this one? http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2370211#post2370211

I'm quite hesitant of downloading any software like that though. :o

That was it. The guy is serious though. But apparently I didn't follow his instructions thoroughly. You're supposed to put them all in a folder with at least a folder with a folder in it. Only then will it work. This is what it does in mere seconds. You decide whether you want to devote the next week to doing it better. I'd say use this as a base and adapt them.

That website though, that gives clean images. However, if it's not in bulk you might as well do it yourself to assure it's clean. If you put on some Finnish death metal, I'm sure you'll FINish in no time. :p

That was it. The guy is serious though. But as I mentioned, it didn't work on my pc.

We'll see. I might or might not try it.

Literally found out about this website yesterday:

https://www.remove.bg/

Could be of help to you ;)

I actually stumbled upon that site just now but it won't allow multiple files at a time so I would have to pick em one by one.. Which I would be doing the dumb way too :D Or buy the license which would allow me to patch multiple photos at a time but it would cost actual money.

EDIT: I tried few harder images which didn't produce good results. I'll be faster, more productive by manually editing and the overall quality will improve too. So I'm going to be doing these manually. I already did +3500 images the last time and I'm hopeful there won't be nearly that many new images in the database :D

I do appreciate the hard work that went on to that script but the quality just isn't there and I'd have to spend more time fixing the blue background mistakes the code would leave in the image, thus taking even more time.. And I'm not going to download any program like that of unknown origin (no slight to the author, just common sense).

I'll be doing these by hand. :)

You absolute madman. :p

Anyhow these came out superclean imo, but as you mention: it won't save you that much time.

Once you figure out the correct threshold for the blue lines it should be click'n-save. You using GIMP?

I know right :p And yes, like I said, some images came out really clean but some really didn't and I can't know which will and which won't so I'll be saving time not doing the guesswork. With keyboard shortcuts and the experience of having done thousands of these I can do one image in 10s at the fastest.

Yes, using GIMP like the previous time.

Okay so now the trial is out and there's about 558 new images in the game but also hundreds of new renders so I'd expect that I have to do work on about 1000 images. :D

I'm still quite shocked about the Cornellverse changes in game so this might take a while.. :(

A small progress udpate: I've now gone through the whole database and cross-referenced every image that has either a.) a new render b.) been renamed c.) was lower quality than the rest. I now have a folder of 4,269 images :D

From those 4,269 images 867 are in need of an edit, as in, they are still .jpg and still have that blue background. Whilst this is a lot less than the 3505 images I had to do for TEW2016, I'm not that fanatic about the project (or insane, you pick which) so it's going to take some time till I get everything done. By downloading the pack, you will have every TEW2016 & TEW2020 worker image + some extras in there too since TEW2020 removed quite a few of these alt / older renders from the database. :)

350 out of the 867 are actually CVFP images (future/random workers) so I might result in doing them last.

I've also filed a bug report since the stable logos only show in the Roster screen, not in match or news screen. Would love the workers to have the stable logo in the background when booking your matches or running the show, but to have the promotion logo in the news. </div></div></div></div><img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/cool.png.f00d2562b2c1d873a09323753efdb041.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />
