Pro Wrestling Guerrilla continued the 2020 Battle of Los Angeles yesterday evening with Night 2's action from the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles.

 

The second half of the opening round was highlighted by the PWG return of an old favorite, a phenomenal showcase of Lucha Libre talent that rivaled Night 1's technical showdown, and an excellent main event that had a result that surprised more than a few in attendance.

 

 

There weren't any surprise cameos during the opening promo from Excalibur. It was just a warm welcome, a rundown of the night's card, and some hype for Saturday night's final stage of the 2020 BOLA. (50)

 

 

Mick Moretti defeated WARHORSE in 12:01 with a Clean Cut (snapmare driver)

 

This turned out to be a pleasant surprise in more ways than one. It felt like the crowd was expecting WARHORSE to take the victory, especially after Moretti screwed him over on Thursday night in tag action. And that seemed to be what was coming, as WARHORSE hit a nice comeback sequence, complete with his metalhead thrashing, right around the 11-minute mark. But Moretti then turned WARHORSE inside out with a clothesline out of nowhere. Swerve! Moretti hit his finisher soon after that to grab a solid opening victory. You've gotta love it when a plan comes together.

Tony Deppen defeated Rey Horus in 14:33 with a Knee Trembler (running knee strike)

 

After a couple of losses to open his PWG ledger, Deppen broke through with an impressive win over Horus. Deppen did a good job focusing on keeping Horus on the mat as much as possible, and he was able to counter and avoid some aerial moves to set up a win. If Deppen is able to pick up some momentum in PWG, watch out. The Globe crowd seems to have quickly taken a liking to him.

Jeff Cobb defeated Flamita in 18:09 with a Tour of the Islands (reverse-spin scoop powerslam)

 

The former champion had lost three straight PWG matches heading into this one, but the streak came to a decisive end here. This was another classic styles clash, with Cobb trying to wear down the smaller Flamita, who used his speed and agility to keep him in it for a while. Both men showed impressive stamina throughout, as this was an 18-minute match that didn't ever feel like it was going that long. Cobb planted Flamita with his signature move, and he'll be moving on to the third and final night of BOLA.

The Rascalz (Dezmond Xavier, Trey Miguel & Zachary Wentz) defeated The Velossidys (Orange Cassidy, Jude London and Paris da Silva) in 13:22 when Xavier used a Final Flash (corkscrew senton bomb) on Cassidy

 

The Rascalz continued their hot streak in PWG with another win as a trio, this time against Orange Cassidy and his newfound friends in the rising VeloCities. There were high spots aplenty in this six-man tag match, with Cassidy providing some breathers every now and then with his trademark sloth style. Xavier looked fantastic out there with a match-best performance, and it was quite fitting for him to finish it all off with a well-executed Final Flash.

Before intermission began, Trey Miguel made a point walk over and grab the signature sunglasses of Orange Cassidy, who was still nursing his wounds in the ring. He and his fellow Rascalz taunted Cassidy and the VeloCities on their way out, making sure to draw plenty of attention to the now-stolen Ray-Bans. (49)

 

 

Bandido defeated Aramis in 10:14 with a 24 Plex

 

The PWG champion got the second half rolling with a solid and straightforward win over the young Aramis. Bandido has been working an incredibly busy schedule as a champion in ROH and The Crash, along with dates in CMLL and IWRG. It's pretty remarkable to see him set to work all three nights of BOLA, so a lot of the crowd didn't mind seeing a shorter first round match for him.

Pentagon Jr. defeated Black Taurus in 12:47 with a Fear Factor (package piledriver)

 

The "cero miedo" chants were back in the Globe Theatre, and they didn't really slow down throughout this slobberknocker of a lucha battle. Pentagon and Taurus made it clear early that they were there to rumble. This one spilled out and onto the rails a few times, with both men taking some really tough shots. Taurus avoided the piledriver on a couple of occasions, but the third time was the charm for Pentagon. This was a great first-round match, even if it was on the shorter side of most BOLA offerings.

Dragon Lee defeated Laredo Kid in 18:42 with a bicycle knee strike

 

While the last Dragon Lee PWG match didn't live up to the hype, this one did. Lee and Laredo clicked from the opening bell, which made for a really fun finale to the first round. This match had great high-flying moments and mat action. The crowd really got behind Lee in the second half, who couldn't seem to get the Dragon Driver off cleanly. Instead, he opted for a wicked knee that turned out Laredo Kid's lights. Gresham-Smith might have just edged Lee-Laredo for best opening round contest, but it could go either way.

Brian Pillman Jr. & Davey Boy Smith Jr. defeated Chris Hero & Jonathan Gresham in 20:24 when Pillman used a Sleeping Hero German Suplex on Hero

 

After the strong reaction to Pillman-Hero and Smith-Gresham for Thursday night, no one in the crowd was going to be opposed to seeing these four men in a ring again. Hero and Gresham were on their A game, which made the finish even more of a fun surprise. While the PWG newcomers didn't get quite as much offense in, they used their experience as a tag team to their advantage with several nice double-team moves. Pillman hit his aptly named finisher on Hero, and Smith crushed Gresham on the other side of the ring with a perfectly timed shoulder tackle to prevent any possible breakup. While Hero and Gresham will be the ones moving on in the tournament, Pillman and Smith got a just reward for their impressive debuts by picking up a main event win Friday night.

Night 2 didn't have quite as many wow moments as Night 1, even with the main event upset and that swerve in the Moretti-WARHORSE opener. But this might have been the most complete card of the restart for PWG, as the action was quite good from top to bottom, without any real drop-off. Now, here comes the front-to-back mayhem of BOLA's final stage later tonight. (Show rating: 63)
