January, 2020

Kanto, Japan

The beeping and vibrating from a cell phone alarm echoes annoyingly throughout the room. The time on the cell phone flashes 6:30am.

A stocky, muscular man gingerly rises out of bed. His knees creak as he uses the night stand to pull himself upright. He shuffles using some sort of walk-limp technique over to the bathroom, splashes his face with water and grabs his robe. His muscles and joints pop and crack with every movement as if he was some sort of stone statue come to life for the first time in decades. Using his arms for support he wobbles along, slowly making his way down the stairs and to the kitchen for his morning coffee.

The house was immaculate and well decorated. He always appreciated the finer things in life and had made more money then he could spend over the course of a very long career. A career that had left him with a fat purse and a broken body. You see Tadiyuki Kikkawa was a wrestling legend in Japan. Some even say he was the greatest heavyweight of all time, and he wasn’t shy about letting people know that either. Never before had Puroresu seen a man with such drive to be great. But these days Kikkawa’s days in the ring were over. Beaten and battered by injuries and the wear and tear that comes with such a physical style, Kikkawa’s thankful for the days he can get out of bed.

In his three years post retirement he had been enjoying what some call the peaceful life. Relaxing after a lifetime of hard work. Well the problem there is Kikkawa didn’t know how to relax. The business had been his life for decades. He tried salvaging what relationships he had with his children but they were all adults now and had their own lives. His wife left him years ago, long before he retired. So you see what some call relaxation, Kikkawa only knew as solitude and loneliness.

Kikkawa grabs a cup of coffee and adds a bit of sugar and cream. He takes a sip, contemplates for a bit, grabs a bottle of whisky from the cabinet and pours a shot into his coffee.

“What the hell do I have to do today anyway” He says to himself as he shuffles over to his living room couch. He turns on the TV as he sips his coffee. Eventually drifting off to sleep.

Several hours later he’s awakened by the vibrations of his cell phone. “Hmmmm, a text message. Who could be texting me.”

Kikkawa checks his phone and sees a text from his old friend Marat Khoklov. Marat - Remember our match in Inspire and the follow up in Burning Hammer years later. I’ve been watching them on repeat all day. Both matches were nothing short of amazing. It just got me thinking of the good old days. I hope all is well.

“Yeah those were great matches now that I think about it. We had the crowd eating out of our hands those two nights.” Kikkawa said to himself.

Suddenly Kikkawa had the overwhelming urge to watch wrestling. He grabbed his computer and started watching old Burning Hammer events, PGHW, even some BCG stuff. He couldn’t stop watching and breaking down match after match after match. Suddenly he realized it was the next day. He had been watching wrestling all through the night.

This was the first time in years Kikkawa felt energized. He thought to himself that maybe it’s time he got back into the business. Maybe it’s time to show the world his own signature brand of wrestling. Maybe it’s time to start his own promotion…

A muscular young man sits on the edge of a bed in a dimly lit hotel room. Intricate and disciplined, he has taken the time to take his clothes out of his suitcase and fold them neatly into drawers. Sometimes the smallest gestures make the road feel more like home he would always say.

Clearly feeling some sort of weighted burden, he looks deep in thought but perplexed at the same time. Loyalty, work ethic, student of the game and fearless warrior were all words used to describe Bunrakuken Torii but at this moment he looks like a man poised to make a hard choice.

He starts to fidget and occasionally let out a deep sighing breathe as he tries to focus on his thoughts:

“BCG is my home, it’s all I’ve ever known. Maeda gave me my first job, made me who I am today and that’s hard to walk away from. I owe that man so much... 2015, that was all him and I’ll never forget that. No one had a better 2015 than I did. But I haven’t been back in that top spot since.

No matter how much I will always be indebted to Maeda for that year of wrestling alone, I have to remember that Funakoshi is their guy. He is the anointed one, the figure head if you will and we will all always be second tier to him. I mean I’ve done well and I’ve won my fair share but while the spotlight may shift from time to time to someone new, it always refocuses on Funakoshi.

So as much as I owe to Maeda and BCG, if I truly want to make my mark on the industry I need to do it elsewhere. This will always be the house that Funakoshi built.

That’s why when you get an offer from a legend you have to listen. Kikkawa offered me more money and the opportunity to be the face of the company, that right there, is hard to say no too.

So here’s the hard part - stay loyal to the brand that brought you into the game or step out of the shadow of greatness and build your own legacy.”

Two longtime friends, Masaru Ugaki and Ryoma Muruyama, meet for drinks at a local izakaya. Just coming off tour where he was wrestling at the top of the card night in and night out, Ugaki is exhausted and wondering why his friend called him here to meet when it’s only been a couple days since they last saw each other.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Muruyama is jittery and nervous, very much the opposite of his usual cool and calm demeanor. He thinks to himself - How do I tell him, how do I break this kind of news. We’ve been a pair for so long…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ugaki:</strong> “Okay Ryo, cut to the chase here. I can tell something is eating away at you, just come out and tell me man. I’m a big boy, I can take it.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Muruyama:</strong> “Well, we’ve been a team for as long as I can remember, hell there was a time when all I ever wanted to do was rule the tag team division with you. But things change, people evolve and right now PGHW needs you as a singles star more than ever.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ugaki:</strong> “Well sure, I get it man. I’m getting the big push right now and you aren’t doing much but you know how this business works. Once my program ends you could be the next man up.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Muruyama:</strong> “I appreciate your faith in me man, I really do. But let’s be real here. In the eyes of the guys running things I’ve always been overshadowed by your ability. I get it, I’m man enough to admit that you are the more talented wrestler, and PGHW will always value you more than me.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ugaki:</strong> “So what are you saying then?”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Muruyama:</strong> “I’m saying it’s time for me to take a different path. If I truly want to get out of your shadow then it’s time for me to make my mark on the business someplace else. I’m leaving PGHW and I wanted to be the first to tell you. It’s time to see what I can do on my own and under a new banner. It's time for me to find my path, and sadly it’s time for our phenomenal tag team to finally split up.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ugaki: </strong>“Ryo, I hate to see you go, you're one of my best friends but I understand. Go out there and be great! I will truly miss our team but I will cherish all those tag title wins!”</p><p> </p><p>

</p><p><strong>

Muruyama:</strong> “As will I, we were untouchable as a team and no one will ever forget that but unfortunately this is where we part ways my old friend.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ugaki:</strong> “One last shot for old times sake?”</p><p> </p><p>

</p><p><strong>

Muruyama:</strong> “You got it!”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Both men cheers and down their shots. They shake hands, say their goodbyes and both go their separate ways. Once a unit, now as individuals for the first time.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

A man with bright orange hair lounges on a park bench staring at his phone. His name is Magnum Kobe, one of the most charismatic performers in all of Japan. With one arm stretched out resting on the top of the bench and one leg extended and propped up on a nearby knee wall his presence screams laid back and care free. The longer he stares at his phone the more upright and attentive he appears. The incoming text reads - I need a decision today, Kikkawa.

Never one to mince words Kobe picks up the phone and dials out…

2CmsD7A.jpgf4P2R4W.jpg

Kikkawa: “Well when I said I needed a decision I didn’t expect you to call this quickly...”

Kobe: “No point in dwelling on something, let’s get to it. Give me your best sales pitch.”

Kikkawa: “Well other than paying you three times what you’re making now you mean. I guess you could say that we are very similar, you and I. I came from the Burning Hammer way of wrestling, we were all about big characters and big production but we also focused on great technical wrestling and stiff, strong strikes. Wrestling is still treated as a serious sport but we had fun and developed our individual gifts as well.

Right now you are a great talent for PGHW but you're just another wrestler with wicked strikes. You’ll never show the world your full character there. You are an incredible wrestler but you're also an incredible entertainer. I want to showcase you doing both…

So there you have it, I want to pay you more than you’ve ever made before and I want you to show the world the real Magnum Kobe character. I’ll never hold you back for being too charismatic…

And that my friend is the best I can offer you.”

Kobe: “I would say that’s a pretty good pitch. And believe me I know that PGHW isn’t the greatest of fits for me personality wise but they paid the bills when WLW went under and they are a perfect fit in regards to ring work. But they are set at the top of the card. If I roll with you I have an opportunity to be at the top from the start. But PGHW’s been around for a long time, and they seem to be pretty stable financially. My head is telling me to stay put, but my heart is telling me to leave.”

Kikkawa: “Rest assured we are stable financially. I did pretty well in my four decades of matches.”

Kobe: “Gotcha, like I said, my heart says go, my head says stay. But I forgot the one rule I had where if a legend recruits you for a project you never say no. So what the hell, let’s do it. Let’s build something special!”

Kikkawa: “That’s the kind of attitude I’m looking for. You’ve made a great decision! I’ll see you in one month.”

Kobe hangs up and reclines back into his original relaxed position. He tilts his head back and flashes a big smile...

So this is what you've been up to post-Women's Revolution mod... Always interested in your work, so I'll be following*. Shout out to Historian and his diary for pointing me this way too.

*though I'm secretly hoping you start working on the RockVerse

Yep, this is my new abomination. I've been yearning to do another promotion in Japan so I figured why not just make my own again.

Well that'a clearly "Machine Gun" Bunrakuken Torii's stable.

Solid starting roster, nice stable graphics and a few new portraits that somehow seem to be missing from my collection. :D

Damnit, I guess that was too obvious. I knew I should have gone with the first name I came up with:

Tokyo Knitting Club
