PGHW 2020: Pride. Glory. Honor.

<div style="padding: 5px; border: 5px solid #ffffff; margin:0px;background: #ffffff; max-width:80%;" ;"="">Created by Japanese legend Sadaharo Jimbo in 1996, PGHW had a meteoric rise to prominence thanks to the amazing matches that the 'golden generation' wrestlers like Miwa, Tatsuko, Mushashibo, Hoshino and Inukai pumped out on a monthly basis for over a decade. The intense style that made the matches so watchable proved to be a double-edged sword though, as their stars fell away to injury one by one. Jimbo retired in 2014 and handed over power to his protege Nobuatsu Tatsuko, who unfortunately has been unable to stop the rot; with the old stars all retired and few new stars stepping up to replace them, PGHW has been in a steep decline for a while now. Whether Tatsuko can turn them around remains to be seen. -Adam Ryland

<div style="padding: 5px; border: 5px solid #ffffff; margin:0px;background: #ffffff; max-width:80%;" ;"="">AUTHOR'S NOTE: Little bit of 'outside of the story' backstory here. So, did a windows reboot a couple weeks ago and - me being me - forgot to back up my WWF 1985 save. So, I've decided to venture into the Cornellverse with my favorite company in the game - Pride Glory Honor Wrestling. Given I've slacked a bit when it came to doing a weekly show like most western-based promotions, I feel doing a Japanese promotion again jives with my posting frequency where you'll have a big show with the occasional major 'Road To' show.

Anyways, no fancy backstory diving into the mind of Shuji Inukai or Nobuatso Tatsuko here. Just a straight up PGHW playthrough.

A PGHW dynasty will always get my attention, as will anything written by Rogue. So PGHW+Rogue should be unmissable! I want you to know that your AJPW 1983 Dynasty is a personal favourite of mine. It was actually a big factor in giving me the inspiration needed to try my hand at writing again after a 10 year hiatus. I wish you all the best with this going forward!

I like a lot PGHW, but in 2020 situation is a bit frustrating for me. Losing all his old stars is like losing a bunch of old friends, but the young crop, with a good roll and avoiding injuries can be special.</p>

RESPECT Tour Day #3 - Glory Rumble

Oto Gymnasium - Kansai

Show Rating: 71

Match No. 1

As expected, SATO and Yoshikawa were in complete control through the match. Goya and Kamimura were able to have several brief flashes of offense as both young lions looked to be working quite well together. Unfortunately for them, SATO and Yoshikawa worked together like a solid team themselves.

SATO and Stone Yoshikawa defeated Daigo Goya and Masatochi Kamimura in 7:41 when Yoshikawa submitted Kamimura with an Ankle Lock.

RATING: 51

Match No. 2

If Oto wanted hard-hitting action, they got it with this six-man tag. Each individual on each time had time to shine with impactful offense as Takimoto in particular kept egging Takano on to battle. The minute or so both men had in squaring off with each other, Takimoto took the fight to Takano with several heavy strikes before Takano surprisingly backed off and tagged out to Flemmingway. The American would go strike for strike against the younger and heavier Takimoto, but he would find himself eventually outdone and on the receiving end of a Gutwrench Tombstone to take the loss for his side.

Gonnohyoe Kada, Hirobumi Takimoto and Hirotsugu Satou defeated Avalanche Takano, Simon Flemmingway and Eien Miyamoto in 13:07 when Takimoto pinned Flemmingway with a Gutwrench Tombstone.

RATING: 56

In his taped post-match backstage comments, Takimoto called out PGHW Historical Japan Champion Avalanche Takano asking if Takano had what it takes to withstand a full-on onslaught from him. Formally laying out a challenge for the PGHW Historical Japan Championship, Takimoto asks why wait for the conclusion of the tour? Why not in Aomori for Night #5 in several days?

Waldorf and Statler tried to slow the pace of the match down from the get go - cutting off Kobayashi and Kamachi any chance they could try to pick the pace up. The method of picking the Japanese wrestlers apart proved to be quite effective in the early stages of the match. A strong forearm and open-handed chop combo from Kobayashi provided enough of an opening for a big boot that tilted the scales in favor of his side.

Waldorf and Statler's smaller frames allowed them to exercise their agility and regain an advantage as they focused their efforts on the smaller Kamachi. Stellar double team work and great ring awareness of keeping Kobayashi at bay set Kamachi up to receive a Wheelbarrow Bomb just before the 15-minute mark.

The Ring Generals defeated Kobayashi & Kamachi in 13:53 by pinfall with a Wheelbarrow Bomb on Kamachi.

RATING: 54

Seiji Jimbo and Beast & West vs. Hitomaru Suzuki and Yano & Kikuchi

LBtl9dT.jpg?1UxBOxdl.jpg?1vuJsKL2.jpg?1WT75C0F.jpgUapCZGu.jpg?1iJKVrEL.jpg?1JsVnxVz.jpg?1

The battle between the two established tag teams was a hard-hitting contest as Yano & Kikuchi and Beast & West wowed the crowd by hitting the ever-loving hell out of each other. Plenty of moments of fighting spirit in this one as each individual on each side would shrug off a strike and then return one right back. Beast & West would look to Jimbo for backup if need be as Yano & Kikuchi made it a point to keep Suzuki on the apron as they looked as if they were going out of their way to make a point against all three of their opponents.

The tag champs looked impressive at times against Jimbo, but the Glory Crown Champion made sure to send a message right back with various stiff strikes against Yano and Kikuchi. West looked for a tag late from Jimbo and received one - immediately following up with some running offense on the champions. Cavanagh kept Suzuki at bay as West nailed Kikuchi with a TNT Whirlwind to pick up the W.

Seiji Jimbo and Beast & West defeated Hitomaru Suzuki and Yano & Kikuchi in 19:43 when West pinned Kikuchi with a TNT Whirlwind

RATING: 71

West: Well, we pinned the champions - I guess that makes us the de facto #1 contenders for the PGHW Glory Tag Crowns, doesn't it? Night of RESPECT, Yano & Kikuchi, we're coming for those championships!

There wasn't much room to hide once the bell rang to kick off the match. Those that already had tag team partners were quick to partner up as, for example, Ugaki and Muruyama started hammering away in a corner on Yasuda as Kwakami and Sanda did the same on the opposite side of the ring against Hayes. Yamanoue and Nagahama - the two oldest competitors in the rumble - soon found themselves to be public enemy #1 as it seemed the rest of the competitors quickly turned their attention on them. Reaver was quick to toss Yamanoue out as Makiguchi and Kitoaji delivered a stereo drop kick to send Nagahama out.

**Reaver eliminates Hirokazu Yamanoue. KitoGuchi eliminates Mamoru Nagahama.**

Old rivals Ugaki and Kawashima quickly found themselves squaring off against the other as they seemed more intent on throwing strikes at each other rather than eliminating the other from the rumble. Muruyama attempted to help his teammate out and make it a 2-on-1 attack on Kawashima, but Komiya went for a shot of glory himself and nearly dumped the veteran Muruyama out of the ring. Needless to say, Muruyama didn't take too kindly to that as he quickly dumped Komiya out with a clothesline over the top rope.

**Ryoma Muruyama eliminates Goemon Komiya.**

Former WLW standouts Magnum Kobe and Reaver found strength in numbers as they began to take the fight to KitoGuchi. The 2-on-2 battle nearly spilled over the top rope on multiple occasions, but each of the four men would find a way to get back in the ring and avoid elimination. Elsewhere, Kwakami and Sanda kept their teamwork up as they closed in on Yasuda and Hayes. Yasuda was nearly eliminated after going over the top rope, but Hayes didn't prove to be as lucky as Kwakami recorded his first elimination of the rumble.

**Akinori Kwakami eliminates William Hayes.**

The Kobe-Reaver/KitoGuchi battle raged on as Kwakami and Sanda quickly made their way over to assist in getting Kitoaji and Makiguchi out. A fireman's carry slam from Reaver over the top rope quickly eliminated Makiguchi as Kitoaji appeared to be helpless from the two teams closing in on him. Kazushige Matsuki was quick to attempt to even the odds as he was able to distract Kwakami and Sanda from helping Kitoaji over the top rope. Somehow, Kitoaji was able to power his way out of the corner and away from the edge as he tried establishing positioning in the center of the ring.

**Reaver eliminates Bussho Makiguchi.**

Kawashima was able to drop both Ugaki with a high-angle K-Kick that left the most recent PGHW Glory Crown champion reeling in the corner. Now that he was able to even the odds to 1-on-1, Muruyama proved to be helpless against the blond-haired star as a brainbuster stunned Muruyama long enough to get dumped over the top rope by Kawashima.

Elsewhere, Yasuda was able to recover enough energy to jump back into the mix of things as he helped assist Matsuki in taking the fight to Kwakami and Sanda. Dropping Kwakami with an enzuigiri, both Yasuda and Matsuki quickly dumped Sanda over the top rope with a double clothesline. Looking pleased at the work both did, Yasuda and Matsuki turned their attention back to the rest of the competitors in the ring... but Yasuda's alliance appeared to be shortlived as he quickly grabbed Matsuki by the back of the head and quickly tossed him out of the ring himself!

**Kozue Kawashima eliminates Ryoma Muruyama. Tetsunori Yasuda and Kazushige Matsuki eliminates Noriyori Sanda. Tetsunori Yasuda eliminates Kazushige Matsuki.**

Kitoaji was quick to become the focus of everyone's efforts as Reaver and Kobe's quick-paced double team action left the second-generation talent reeling and on the receiving end of The Glorious Red from Kobe. After getting planted with the move, Reaver quickly got Kitoaji back to his feet as the PGHW International Champion dumped Kitoaji out of the ring to join his teammate.

**Reaver eliminates Chojiro Kitoaji.**

Kawashima continuously tried to dump Ugaki over the top rope, but the two-time Glory Crown Champion kept summoning all of his fighting spirit to keep himself in the ring. Yasuda figured with Kawashima distracted that he'd be his next target. All Yasuda's attempt to dump Kawashima over the top rope did though was enrage the star as Kawashima whipped himself around and promptly delivered a leaping knee to Yasuda's head - sending the red-haired wrestler to the mat. This distraction opened Kawashima up for an elimination attempt from Ugaki in what turned out to be just another stalemate.

Kobe and Reaver continued their collaborative effort as Reaver softened Kwakami up with a heavy knee lift to the abdomen as Kobe followed up with his second Glorious Red of the match. This time, it was Kobe to eliminate the recipient of the move as Reaver watched on from the corner. With five men now left in the ring, both WLW alumni tried to assist Ugaki in eliminating Kawashima, but each man quickly found themselves being thrown away as Kawashima stood tall in the ring.

Reaver was first to his feet as he walked straight up to Kawashima - daring the bigger man to throw the first punch (which he gladly did.) The two went back and forth in an impressive standing matchup of strikes and various quick slams as the PGHW International Champion refused to give an inch to his larger opponent. Several heavy blows across the back from Kawashima opened Reaver up to a Kawashima Driver 2005 as Reaver couldn't get out of the setup for the move. Having his head driven into the mat, Reaver was quick to get eliminated - but the Glory Rumble sure proved to be a strong effort from the champ.

**Reaver eliminates Akinori Kwakami. Kozue Kawashima eliminates Reaver.**

Having spent a good amount of energy on taking out the International Champion, Kawashima dropped to one knee - prompting Ugaki to try to seize the moment and eliminate his rival. Using the corner pad for some help, Ugaki was able to get Kawashima's left side over the top rope, but Kawashima was able to hook his right leg on one of the ropes to prevent him from going out. Kobe and Yasuda seized the opportunity of their own as they quickly made their way over to double team Ugaki. Ugaki was able to hold his own against the two as a high-angle DDT stunned Yasuda for long enough that Ugaki unceremoniously dumped him from the ring - leaving three competitors remaining.

Kobe and Ugaki went toe-to-toe as both men were so hellbent on eliminating the other that both nearly dumped each other out simultaneously. Kawashima continued to lay in the opposite corner as he could only watch with delight at his opponents' reckless display. Ugaki went for a leaping knee on the red-haired Kobe as Kobe quickly rolled out of the way - causing Ugaki to get hung up on the ropes. A running dropkick from Kobe to the back of Ugaki's head caused the former Glory Crown Champion to let go of the rope and crash to the outside.

**Masaru Ugaki eliminates Tetsunori Yasuda. Magnum Kobe eliminates Masaru Ugaki.**

Kawashima - having rested enough - figured it was best to no longer waste any time as he charged his way across the ring. Connecting with a big boot, the bigger man immediately went for an elimination as he first picked Kobe up for a Kawashima Driver 2005, but Kobe managed to wriggle out of the setup hold and countered with a headscissor rana that nearly sent Kawashima over the top. With Kawashima hanging to the ropes, Kobe ran across the ring and tried a running shining wizard, but Kawashima caught him in position for a Kawashima Driver again! For a second time, Kobe was able to free himself (with help of the ropes) as he delivered a second headscissors - this time sending his opponent crashing to the mat.

Magnum Kobe wins the Glory Rumble 2020 in 32:54.

RATING: 74

Kobe: Seiji Jimbo, I've bested two of the three existing pillars of Pride Glory Honor Wrestling. I outlasted Ugaki. I outlasted Kawashima. I beat the both of them in one fell swoop in one match. What do you think I'm going to do to you? Unlike Ugaki and Kawashima, you're just a boy running around masquerading as the top man in the company and you need to be taken down a peg. Night of RESPECT, there'll be no respect. I'm driving you back into the dirt where you belong.

Munakata Heading to BHOTWG, Offers Made to Several PGHW Talent... Statler Working Injured

hSd18C8.jpg?1Xivr1N6.jpg?1

  • Totoya Munakata is set to make a move to BHOTWG after agreeing to an exclusive contract with the Japanese giant. Munakata's been a young PGHW mainstay all the way from their SAISHO years. A solid fixture of the lower midcard, the move comes as a bit of a blow to Japan's #2 company, but the rumor is the fight to keep Munakata wasn't that intense. BHOTWG have also sent out contract offers to several prominent midcarders in the PGHW ranks. CEO Nobuatso Tatsuko and booker Shuji Inukai's internal strategy on the matter is to fight hard for those that have already had special long-term plans in place. Evidently, Munakata didn't make the cut on that front.

  • Marv Statler is reported to be working injured after PGHW's year-opening event. Statler is said to be working through some lingering shoulder pain that was caused during an unfortunate botch in The Ring Generals' year-opening tag match against Kobayashi & Kamachi. Injury's said to likely last around two months and may take Statler out of a nod to enter his first Elite Series.
