The Road to Double or Nothing was, as always, filled with great matches, great moments and great stories. With AEW in the middle of its best run of shows to date, the expectations are sky high, meaning that every show must be a home run. And All Elite Wrestling hit grand slam after grand slam.

AEW World Champion MJF continued his blood feud with longtime rival Darby Allin. Interestingly, despite being rivals and always taking jabs at one another in promos, this will be the FIRST TIME the two lock up in singles action. We got a preview of the match on AEW Dynamite: Styles vs. Omega, with Darby and Sting defeating MJF and Shawn Spears. Darby said that he will let MJF talk all he wants because it doesn’t faze him. He doesn’t need to talk crap, he doesn’t need to get under MJF's skin, he will just wrestle like he always has. And wrestle he did, as he earned another win over Shawn Spears, this time in singles competition in the third week of May. MJF did not step back into the ring for a match during the road to the pay-per-view, instead telling Darby that he can talk people into any arena in the country, and then get it done in the ring on pay-per-view. After a backstage attack on Sting by the Pinnacle's FTR and Spears, AEW President Tony Khan announced that the main event of Double or Nothing will be free of any interference, as both team's seconds have been banned from ringside and any interference will result in immediate termination.

The storyline that has garnered the most traction in online buzz is the one between AEW World Tag Team Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. During AEW Rampage the second week of May, CM Punk was cutting a promo about how happy he is here in All Elite Wrestling. It was his typical shtick, one he has been repeating many times over since his debut at AEW Dynamite: The First Dance in September 2021. During this promo however, things took a turn when he was interrupted by Cody Rhodes. Cody stood on the entrance ramp and mentioned that its funny that everyone says Cody cuts the same promo every week when CM Punk comes out and does the same thing. Cody told Punk that he was someone he looked up to for a long time. The career projectory of CM Punk after the infamous pipebomb was one for the ages. He told CM Punk that while the pipebomb spoke of a revolution, Cody was the revolution. This promo has been looked at as a turning point, with the fans beginning to once again get behind Cody Rhodes after over a year of souring on him. The inverse effect was made on CM Punk, as the novelty of his return wore off, and the fans began to believe that Cody may be speaking truths about the man they've been cheering since his debut. After defeating Daniel Garcia on Dynamite two weeks before the PPV, Cody laid out a challenge for CM Punk: an AEW World Tag Team Championship match between the champions, CM Punk and Bryan Danielson, and the Brotherhood, Cody and Dustin Rhodes. The day ones vs. the year threes.

The neverending saga between the Elite and the Bullet Club continued and was as hot as ever. The last we saw, AJ Styles defeated Kenny Omega on the AEW Dynamite: Styles vs. Omega special episode to win the IWGP United States Championship. A week later, the Bullet Club's Good Brothers lost to Kenny's partner Kota Ibushi and Katsuhiko Nakajima in tag team action. The rest of the Bullet Club went after the two men, but were thwarted by Kenny and Hangman Page coming to their rescue. Notably absent from either side were the Young Bucks, who are torn between their alliance to Bullet Club and their former best friend, Kenny Omega. The Bucks told the Bullet Club and Mount Rushmore that they needed time away, so they would not be aiding them in their war against the remnants of the Elite. As a result, AEW World Trios Champions G.O.D. and AJ Styles (a double champion) struggled to defeat the Dark Order's Evil Uno, Stu Grayson and John Silver in a trios title match on Rampage. After that match, Kenny Omega came out onto the ramp and challenged Bullet Club to a match at the PPV: Bullet Club vs. Golden Lovers and Hangman Page for the AEW World Trios Championships. It was also on that Rampage that PAC challenged AJ Styles to an IWGP US title match on the go-home episode of Dynamite, a match that Styles would win, and a match that has received many match of the year votes.

TNT Champion Ricky Starks continued his awesome reign as TNT Champion on his way to Double or Nothing. After an open challenge victory over NJPW talent Jonah Rock, he laid out a challenge to any member of the AEW locker room for the PPV, a challenge that was immediately answered by Jon Moxley. Starks seemed to instantly regret this decision, and stood behind Team Taz's Jeff Cobb and Jacob Fatu as Moxley circled the ring. On the following Rampage, Starks said that he was revoking his challenge, but AEW President Tony Khan did not accept this revocation, instead making a trios match for Dynamite where if Moxley won, he would get the match. Starks choose Cobb and Fatu for his partners, with Moxley not revealing his side until the match. With Team Taz looking on with dread, Moxley's partners were revealed to be Eddie Kingston and Rami Sebei! Starks won the TNT title from Kingston in March, and had a long feud with Rami Sebei after his AEW debut. Moxley's team came out on top, granting him the title match for Double or Nothing.

Britt Baker won the AEW Women's World Championship from Hikaru Shida at Double or Nothing 2021. Since that first show, Baker has retained the title in match after match. Ever since the fans have returned to the arenas, they have only known Britt Baker as their AEW Women's World Champion. The last woman to beat her in singles competition is Thunder Rosa, albeit in an unsanctioned Lights Out Match in March 2021. It can be argued that if that match was sanctioned, Thunder Rosa would have been the one facing Shida at the PPV a year ago. Rosa lost the NWA World Women's title to Serena Deeb on Rampage after some questionable tactics by Deeb. After Baker retained the title over Anna Jay on Dynamite, Rosa came to the ring and reminded Baker of the fact she was the last one to beat her. Baker said she doesn’t remember such a match happening. She looked in the record books and doesn’t see it. After another week of egging her on, Baker finally accepted the challenge for the PPV. Now Britt aims to eclipse the one year mark with the title.

Ever since Kevin Steen debuted in AEW and allied himself with the Bullet Club as part of Mount Rushmore alongside the Young Bucks and Adam Cole, he has been at war with Chris Jericho and the Inner Circle. At AEW SuperBrawl: The Clash in April, his side defeated Jericho's side. This has not sat well with Jericho, who challenged Steen to a singles match at Double or Nothing to put an end to their rivalry for good. In the weeks that followed, Steen defeated Sammy Guevara again, and Santana & Ortiz defeated 2point0 but were immediately attacked by Adam Cole and Kevin Steen. Jericho told Steen that before their match at Double or Nothing, he would have one more match, against another former rival. This former rival ended up being SUPER DRAGON, who faced Kevin Steen on the go-home edition of Rampage, but ultimately came up short. Now their final encounter is upon us, after years of feuding across multiple promotions.

Ashley Flair continued her utter dominance in AEW. She defeated Tay Conti on Dynamite after a few weeks of build, and now had a new rival in Kris Statlander. The Best Friend member interrupted a Flair backstage promo, telling her that Flair coming into AEW and expecting everything to be handed to her just didn’t sit right with the women in the back. This led to a brawl between them, and a match being made for the PPV. After Flair defeated Jordynne Grace on the final Rampage before Double or Nothing, the two brawled all over the arena, with Statlander coming out on top after throwing Flair behind the counter in a concessions area.

While Kris Statlander was busy with Ashley Flair, the rest of the Best Friends had their hands full with AEW's newest faction, the House of Black. Malakai Black's group, which also includes Brody King, the Butcher and the Blade, made life hell for the Best Friends, primarily Orange Cassidy. They attacked them week in and week out, before a match was officially made for the PPV between Malakai Black and Orange Cassidy. The build to this match has been completely in the House's favor, with the House defeating the Best Friends, Malakai winning over Wheeler Yuta, and Brody King winning over Trent Beretta. The Buy In match for Double or Nothing was also made, with Brody King and the Butcher and the Blade taking on Chuck Taylor, Trent Beretta and Wheeler Yuta.

There were other feuds throughout May that would not result in matches at Double or Nothing. One notable example of this was was between new NWA World Women's Champion Serena Deeb and Riho. After Riho defeated Nyla Rose, she received a shot at Deeb's title on the go-home edition of AEW Rampage, with Deeb coming out on top. Also, after Miro defeated Wardlow on AEW Rampage, Lance Archer came out, and Jake Roberts told Miro that Archer wanted a piece of him. Miro accepted, and successfully redeemed Lance Archer on the go-home episode of Rampage.

Hardest one to pick is Punk and Danielson vs Cody and Dustin.  I'd love to say Dustin will get the win a Bulldog but I don't think it's likely.  Elsewhere, I think Starks will retain.  Moxley is obviously good enough to beat him but does he drop to TNT title level after being World champion for so long?  I think Steen will win.  No, Jericho.  No, Steen.  Jericho!  Steen!  Ahhhhh...  Maybe Dustin's match isn't the hardest to call.

AEW DOUBLE OR NOTHING 2022

SATURDAY WEEK 4, MAY 2022

0. House of Black (Brody King/The Butcher/The Blade) def. Best Friends (Chuck Taylor/Trent Beretta/Wheeler Yuta) - The Buy In for AEW Double or Nothing played host to a fast-paced trios match between the bruisers in AEW's newest group and the energetic trio of Best Friends. Trent received a lot of shine, but in the end, a Gonzo Bomb by King to Yuta was all she wrote.

AEW's fourth annual Double or Nothing kicked off with the announce team running down the card, which will be capped off with a huge main event between AEW World Champion MJF and challenger Darby Allin. This is, shockingly, the first time they will wrestle in a singles match. But before that, there are eight other matches that are all looking to steal the show, starting off with the Casino Battle Royale.

image.jpeg

1. CASINO BATTLE ROYALE: Rami Sebei def. Alex Shelley, Andrade El Idolo, Anthony Ogogo, Brian Cage, Brian Pillman Jr, Chris Sabin, Dante Martin, Darius Martin, Dragon Lee, Eddie Kingston, Ethan Page, Jacob Fatu, Jeff Cobb, Jungle Boy, Katsuhiko Nakajima, Lance Archer, Matt Sydal, Miro, Ortiz, PAC, Penta El Zero Miedo, Rey Fenix, Ricochet, Rush, Sammy Guevara, Santana, Scorpio Sky, Wardlow & Will Hobbs - In this absolutely star-studded Casino Battle Royale, Rami Sebei came out on top by last eliminating Jeff Cobb. The other two in the final four were Cobb's ally Jacob Fatu and PAC. After Cobb eliminated PAC, Sebei ducked a lariat by Fatu that sent him over the rope, before eventually giving Cobb a Helluva Kick that sent him over the top rope. Miro had the most eliminations, with eight men being redeemed by him, but a joint effort by literally everyone left was enough to throw him out. Sebei celebrated his victory by announcing his intentions to challenge the winner of tonight's main event!

Jon Moxley cut a backstage promo on his opponent tonight, TNT Champion Ricky Starks. He said that he has climbed the mountaintop and become AEW World Champion, so its only right to begin his quest for the other gold in AEW. He said that Ricky Starks is a hell of a talent and a future megastar, but Mox is already at that level. If Ricky truly wants to become the star he is destined to be, he's gotta beat the biggest star in All Elite Wrestling.

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

2. Malakai Black def. Orange Cassidy - Since debuting just weeks ago. Malakai Black and his House have run roughshod over the Best Friends. Tonight was no exception, as Black dismantled Cassidy pillar to post. Orange received a short comeback towards the end, but it was quickly cut off and Malakai kicked his head off to get the victory in his AEW PPV debut.

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

3. Ashley Flair def. Kris Statlander - Flair moved her record to 6-0 after defeating Statlander here. The match was much more even than expected, and at one point it seemed like Statlander would win after a Big Bang Theory, but it wasn’t enough, and Flair got the victory with a Figure Four.

Ashley Flair added insult to injury by refusing to let go of the hold after the bell rang, but familiar music began to play…

image.jpeg

HIKARU SHIDA!

Shida sprinted to the ring with a kendo stick in hand to thwart off Flair. The Los Ingobernables member ran up the ramp with a smile on her face. Shida grabbed a mic and simply said "Flair, I want YOU!"

image.jpeg

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.pngimage.jpegimage.jpeg

4. AEW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: CM Punk & Bryan Danielson © def. Cody & Dustin Rhodes - Simply put, this was one of the best matches in the history of AEW. Three years after their five-star match at the inaugural Double or Nothing against one another, Cody & Dustin Rhodes teamed up and delivered another five-star match, this time against two of the best to ever lace em up. Danielson was beloved by the crowd, but it was a bit more mixed for Punk, due to Cody's scathing promo on him on Dynamite that led to Cody receiving more fan support than he had in years. The finish of this match came when Danielson sent Cody over the top rope, allowing Punk to hit the GTS on Dustin to get the pinfall.

image.jpeg

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

5. TNT CHAMPIONSHIP: Ricky Starks © def. Jon Moxley - In what is perhaps the biggest upset in the history of AEW, Ricky Starks defeated Jon Moxley to give Moxley his FIRST CLEAN LOSS in AEW. While the crowd was split mostly in Moxley's favor for the duration of the match, they erupted after Starks hit two Roshambos to get the pinfall. After months of growing fan support, this was Starks' career-defining moment thus far.

There was a prerecorded video package for Darby Allin, narrated by Sting. Sting talked about Darby's career in AEW, and how the Icon came to AEW for him over all else. Tonight is the coronation of Darby Allin.

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

6. Kevin Steen def. Chris Jericho - A feud that has spanned years and companies finally came to an end with Bullet Club and Mount Rushmore's Kevin Steen defeating Chris Jericho. The crowd adored Jericho but also gave support to Steen, that was until Steen barked at them and made them boo him strongly. Steen reversed a Frankensteiner attempt by Jericho into a Package Piledriver to give himself the win here at Double or Nothing.

7. AEW WORLD TRIOS CHAMPIONSHIP: The Golden Lovers & Hangman Page def. Bullet Club (AJ Styles/Tama Tonga/Tanga Loa) © - A barnburner of a match that continued the neverending saga between the Bullet Club and the remnants of the Elite. While the Guerrillas of Destiny had their moments, the champions' side was focused heavily on AJ Styles, who went toe-to-toe with all three challengers. He first squared off with Hangman Page, then Kota Ibushi, then Kenny Omega. Styles is showing that he hasn't lost a step since his IWGP Heavyweight title reign eight years ago. In the end however, Kenny Omega got his revenge after months of Bullet Club beatdowns, and put Styles away with a One Winged Angel to get the victory for himself and his best friends.

Omega, Ibushi and Page celebrated to huge applause from the crowd, but this was shortlived as Adam Cole and Jay White attacked the winners. The Bullet Club mercilessly beat down the trio, until…

THE YOUNG BUCKS!

It looks like the Young Bucks have made up their mind! They turned on Kenny seven months ago when Adam Cole debuted at AEW Dynamite: Reawakening and manipulated the brothers into turning on their best friend. The Bucks sprinted to the ring and immediately went at the Bullet Club. They held them off long enough for the new trios champions to recover, and the ten men brawled everywhere until the Bullet Club was driven away and up the ramp. Back in the ring, Kenny had tears in his eyes as he reunited with the Elite brethren! Ibushi and Page joined them, and it looked like the Elite, no, the Golden Elite, were finally back together.

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

8. AEW WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Thunder Rosa def. Britt Baker © - One year after winning the title from Hikaru Shida, Britt finally lost it. Thunder Rosa proved to be the better competitor, and the pop when she won was huge. Baker's reign was the second straight AEW Women's World title reign to last from one Double or Nothing to the next. Rosa held the gold high, as this was a long time coming for her, after defeating Baker in the Lights Out match fourteen months ago on Dynamite.

We received an excellent video package highlighting MJF and Darby Allin's careers in AEW. Both have been here since day one, and both are as homegrown as it gets. This is the first AEW pay-per-view to be headlined by two "pillars" and is a huge step for not just for the men involved, but for AEW itself. The video focused on MJF's betrayal of Cody Rhodes and how that feud and victory has shaped his career, and on Darby's rise to the top, beginning with his early draw with Cody and loss to Chris Jericho, and ending with his TNT Championship reign and alliance with Sting.

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

9. AEW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: MJF © def. Darby Allin - Double or Nothing 2022 would not prove to be Darby's coronation, as MJF retained the AEW World Championship over his rival. The crowd was molten, proving that putting two of AEW's best homegrown talents at the top of the card on pay-per-view was a huge success. As opposed to his usual antics, MJF wrestled clean for the entirety of the match. He left the Pinnacle in the back, just as Darby left Sting in the back. It was a reversal of a Coffin Drop into a Salt of the Earth armbar that forced Darby to submit and the champion to retain.

The Pinnacle joined MJF in the ring as FTR put the champion on their shoulders as the Double or Nothing PPV feed went off the air.

RESULTS:

0. House of Black (Brody King/Butcher/Blade) def. Best Friends (Chuck Taylor/Trent/Yuta)

1. CASINO BATTLE ROYALE WINNER: Rami Sebei

2. Malakai Black def. Orange Cassidy

3. Ashley Flair def. Kris Statlander

4. AEW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: CM Punk & Bryan Danielson © def. Cody & Dustin Rhodes (4th defense)

5. TNT CHAMPIONSHIP: Ricky Starks © def. Jon Moxley (4th defense)

6. Kevin Steen def. Chris Jericho

7. AEW WORLD TRIOS CHAMPIONSHIP: The Golden Lovers & Hangman Page def. Bullet Club (AJ Styles/Tama Tonga/Tanga Loa) © (NEW CHAMPIONS)

8. AEW WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Thunder Rosa def. Britt Baker © (NEW CHAMPION)

9. AEW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: MJF © def. Darby Allin (2nd defense)

A YEAR IN RETROSPECT

With AEW Double or Nothing 2022 being complete, that marks one in-game year being posted. I took a few long breaks here and there, but I am happy that I have come back to continue each time. I've said it a few times but I have booked up through August 2022/All Out, so I have plenty more to post and will continue to post after that PPV as well. I'm happy with my "Road To" posts for now, mainly because I am writing off of memory and therefore need to dig deep into my brain to remember why things were booked. I've won a few awards with this AEW run, including a DOTM award that pushed me into Veteran status, so thank you all for that.

There isn't really a catch all thread I can put this post in so it's going here because it's where the report came from.

Please, under any circumstances, do not report a post if it's someone bumping a thread. It's not against the board rules and is just a waste of time to report it.

Apologies to anyone who sees this and thinks Dalton's posted a new update.
