Crimson Tiger reigns supreme in "Golden Warfare" Series finale

SENDAI, Japan - Zeshin Makioka has triumphed in his second defence of the Destiny Crown, crushing PGHW veteran Gonnohyoe Kada in the main event of Pro Wrestling SAISHO's "Golden Warfare" event in front of 175 fans in Sendai.

It had been three months since Makioka captured the Destiny Crown from Lion Genji, and here he faced his sternest challenge yet in the form of the towering Kada.

In the series lead up, Makioka had earned the ire of Mito Miwa, who accused his new ace of relying too heavily on his fellow Crimson Tigers, Akira Arato, Gidayu Katou & Ogai Miki. Instead of ignoring "The Pride Warrior", Makioka instead issued a call to all former Destiny Crown Champions to answer the call - one that was met by the 2nd Champion, Kada.

While Makioka looked confident early on, he was quickly shaken by the power of his larger opponent. What Kada lacked in speed, he made up for in strength - winding Makioka with a series of knees to the sternum, and crushing him with some equally brutal elbows to the face.

But the new champion soon found a way into the match, responding with his own strikes - plus interests - as he lit up Kara's chest with some trademark knife edge chops. His punishing strikes started to wind the former champion, although the PGHW veteran showed toughness to take control himself - and on a number of occasions it looked like he might claim the title for a second time.

At the climax of the match, the crowd rained boos down on Makioka, as his Crimson Tigers emerged from the back and started to make their way down to the ring. But, to his credit, Makioka sent them away - and went toe-to-toe with Kada, looking to prove himself.

It was an inspired choice: as the bout went past twenty minutes, Kada became more and more lumbering and a clumsy clothesline attempt was easily ducked under by Makioka. Then, the champion struck - nailing Kada with a DDT to secure his second title defence, and earn a measure of respect from "The Pride Warrior".

Elsewhere, although still without their leader Torajiro Sekokawa, the Coyote Company's Arakaki & Serizawa made their third defence of the Destiny Tag Team Crown against former champions The Night Terrors; Azumamaro Kito edged ahead in his ongoing rivalry with Lion Genji; Jayson Van Pelt's Coalition picked up a win over KAZ and his mentees Kakinomoto & Koizumi; and Tobei Sugimura claimed the Ride the Tiger Title in an entertaining bout against stablemate Motoyuki Miyake.

The "Golden Warfare" Series marked the end of an up-and-down year for Mito Miwa's promotion, which has ebbed and flowed as it continues to try and recover from the impacts of the tsunami. Many - Miwa included - describe 2020 as a "make or break" year.

SAISHO New Year Boom!! to kick off "Battleground 2020" Series

SENDAI, Japan - Mito Miwa's Pro Wrestling SAISHO will kick off 2020 with the "Battleground 2020" Series, which will see the Destiny Tag Team Crown go on the line and the return of Coyote Company leader Torajiro Sekozawa.

The six date tour will culminate at the Miyagino Ward Bunka Center on Jan. 24, as reigning champions Isoruko Arakaki & MUSCLE Serizawa will defend their titles against the A-1 Tag Grand Prix winners, Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa.

But fans won't have to wait long for the two teams to meet - as SAISHO "New Year Boom!!" on Jan. 4 will pit Arakaki & Serizawa alongside fellow Coyote Shiba Mizoguchi against Ronin Fujio Narahashi, Akamatsu & Nakazawa.

Fans will also see the return of veteran Sekazawa on Jan. 4, as he features in the main event ¥100,000 Battle Royal. But after months out from injury, his proper return won't be until a few weeks later on Jan. 24 - when he teams alongside Mizoguchi against The Diamond Dogs.

Finally, there's a big title defence in stall at "New Year BOOM!!", as Zeshin Makioka makes his third defence of the Destiny Crown, facing The Coalition's leader, Jayson Van Pelt.

The start of the dynasty is unique. Putting the focus mainly on the story of Zeshin Makioka brings your champ and earning some respect from Mito Miwa by not using help from his cronies. This sets the path going forward with the knowledge of exactly where we are with Zeshin at a crossroads. Will he continue to impress Mito Miwa it will be fall back on help from others to maintain his success?

Welcome back Scottie! I really like SAISHO, I've never did a dynasty with them but multiple saves and I love them. Cool and young roster with such a nice history, a perfect promotion to start with. I dig your presentation , like always, and I'll be following for sure mate.

SAISHO “NEW YEAR BOOM!!” - Jan. 4 Results

SENDAI, Japan - Zeshin Makioka started 2020 in perfect style, successfully defending his Destiny Crown for the third time with a pinfall win over Jayson Van Pelt at Pro Wrestling SAISHO’s “NEW YEAR BOOM!!” in Sendai.

Growing in confidence following his win over Gonnohyoe Kada at “Golden Warfare”, Makioka again prevailed without his Crimson Tigers as backup - although the self-proclaimed “Sensation” put up a real fight.

In his first shot at the Destiny Crown, Van Pelt's aerial warfare initially caught Makioka off-guard. But Makioka soon adjusted and took control of the bout with his heavy hitting style - including a moment where he drew an audible gasp from the crowd by pasting Van Pelt with a knife edge chop as the Canadian flew from the top rope.

Van Pelt showed heart, but fell short just after the 20 minute mark as Makioka struck him with a Running Knee in the corner to finish the bout. The champion was subdued in his celebration - wiping blood away from a split lip and looking determined to cement his position as the dominant force in SAISHO.

Elsewhere, Torajiro Sekozawa marked his first performance in months with a match high three eliminations in the night's final bout, but it was former Destiny Crown and GCG Openweight Champion Lion Genji who claimed the ¥100,000 purse as he edged ahead in his rivalry with Azumamaro Kita. Meanwhile, A-1 Tag Grand Prix winners Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa showed their pedigree in some spirited exchanges with the Destiny Tag Team Crown holders, Isoruko Arakaki & MUSCLE Serizawa, but it was Fujio Narahashi who got the win as he pelted Shiba Mizoguchi with a Lariat.

Thank you all for the feedback! This is my first game with SAISHO. It's a fun roster - not too big, but some good characters. Maybe I've gone for one stable too many (or too many members of the Ronin alliance!), but I'll figure that out.

My current plan is to follow Puto's lead and not post every tour show (but maybe a story every so often when something important happens).

Battleground 2020

Pro Wrestling SAISHO's year opening "Battleground" Series comes to a head at the Miyagino Ward Bunka Center on Jan. 24, with a blockbuster Destiny Tag Team Crown bout headlining the show.

Plus - there's special singles action; the continuation of the rivalry between Lion Genji and Ronin VII; and the long-awaited return of Torajiro Sekozawa!

DESTINY TAG TEAM CROWN

ISORUKO ARAKAKI & MUSCLE SERIZAWA © vs. KINJI AKAMATSU & TORCH NAKAZAWA

The main event sees the Destiny Tag Team Crowns go on the line, as the talented young team Arakaki & Serizawa defend their titles against A-1 Tag Team Grand Prix winners Akamatsu & Nakazawa.

Arakaki & Serizawa surprised The Diamond Dogs in August last year, claiming the Crowns for the first time at an early stage in their partnership. Since then, they've been a leading force in the tag division, making three successful defences and keeping the Coyote Company rolling along in the absence of usual leader Torajiro Sekozawa. But here, they face their sternest test yet - with the veteran pairing from Ronin VII finally launching their assault on the titles after winning the A-1 Tag Team Grand Prix in October.

In the lead up to this bout, Ronin VII picked up a morale boosting win at "New Year BOOM!!" on Jan. 4. The two teams met just once during the tour, on Jan. 23 where the champions combined with Shiba Mizoguchi & Lion Genji to defeat Ronin VII (with Shuzo Utagawa taking the fall).

Despite the even spoils, the more experienced Akamatsu & Nakazawa arguably come into the bout as slight favourites, as they look to claim the Tag Team Crown for a record fourth time as a team. And if successful, Nakazawa will make it six times as champion!

lZ8TEU9.jpgSNZxGZk.jpgoFh4mPL.jpg

SPECIAL SINGLES MATCH

KAZ vs. MOTOYUKI MIYAKE

With many now saying he's past the prime of his career, KAZ, has made no secret of his desire to claim the Destiny Crown for a seventh time in 2020. But here, the 36-year old faces the future of SAISHO - former Ride the Tiger Champion Motoyuki Miyake, who has started his 2020 off in impressive fashion with a series of strong performances in the "Battleground 2020" Series.

Miyake found himself opposed to KAZ on three occasions during the tour, winning all three encounters. On two of those occasions, Miyake earned the pinfall himself - but those were both against KAZ's protégées, Jinzaburo Kakinomoto & Naruhiko Koizumi.

Still, those performances were enough to earn Miyake what is arguably the biggest match of his career - a special singles match with "Mr. SAISHO" himself.

CRIMSON TIGERS (ZESHIN MAKIOKA, AKIRA ARATO & GIDAYU KATOU) vs. THE COALITION (JAYSON VAN PELT & BILLY ROBINSON) & YUKI HORIGOSHI

It's been a low key tour for Makioka since making his third defence of the Destiny Crown on Jan. 4, but the leader of the Crimson Tigers has strung together some good results - losing just once, and even then leaving his tag partner Akira Arato to take the fall against Akamatsu & Nakazawa on Jan 18.

At "Battleground 2020", he was meant to team up with Arato & Gidayu Katou against all three members of The Coalition, having bested leader Jayson Van Pelt for the title on Jan. 4. Unfortunately, Swedish grappler Nigel Svensson suffered a concussion in multi-man action on Jan. 23, leaving Van Pelt and Billy Robinson to draft in 33-year old Yuki Horigoshi at the last minute, who made his debut on the same night with a singles victory over Motty Kuroda.

Makioka will be hoping to put The Coalition firmly in his rear vision mirror, while Van Pelt will be hoping his makeshift team can earn a measure of revenge against the leader of the Crimson Tigers.

TORAJIRO SEKOZAWA RETURN MATCH

TORAJIRO SEKOZAWA & SHIBA MIZOGUCHI vs. THE DIAMOND DOGS (JIMMY STRATOSPHERE & MOTTY KURODA)

After months out with injury, 44-year old Coyote Company leader, Torajiro Sekozawa, returns in tag team action alongside Shiba Mizoguchi.

Although billed as a "return" match, Sekozawa of course actually made his in-ring return in a Battle Royale on Jan. 4, where although ultimately unsuccessful he picked up the most eliminations. Now, he teams with his long-time partner Mizoguchi to face two-time Destiny Tag Team Crown holders, The Diamond Dogs. For his part, Mizoguchi has had an up-and-down tour - the highlight being a six-man win alongside Arakaki & Serozawa against Lion Genji and The Diamond Dogs on Jan. 18.

Kuroda & Stratosphere have had a tough tour, winning just one match on Jan. 17 against some of the lesser lights of Ronin VII. But they are no strangers to tag success, having claimed one of their Tag Team Crowns against Sekozawa & Mizoguchi in December 2018. This match is likely to be a real highlight - and Sekozawa will need to make sure he brings his A-game.

2O8w4Yc.jpg82suPHo.jpgXw5DQI9.jpgSNZxGZk.jpg37bkqwN.jpgS0Zn3CY.jpgTULjtWl.jpg

RONIN VII (AZUMAMARO KITA, FUJIO NARAHASHI & SHUZO UTAGAWA) vs. LION GENJI & THE NIGHT TERRORS (BABAU & MOROI)

The rivalry continues to heat up between Lion Genji and Azumamaro Kita, as Genji teams with The Night Terrors, against Ronin VII's Kita, Fujio Narahashi & Shuzo Utagawa.

Genji of course claimed his first Destiny Crown by beating Kita in December 2018, and despite winning the A-1 Grand Prix last year, Kita has twice been unsuccessful in claiming the title back - including one against Genji himself.

Kita got the better of Genji's team at "Golden Warfare" in December last year, but it was Genji who started the year better at "New Year BOOM!!" - pinning Kita to win the main event Battle Royale and the ¥100,000 purse. With Kita teaming with his long-time tag partner Narahashi, he will feel confident he can pull ahead in his rivalry - although Genji is paired with a seasoned and unpredictable pairing in the form of the two-time Destiny Tag Team Crown holders, Babau & Moroi.

RIDE THE TIGER TITLE

TOBEI SUGIMURA © vs. OGAI MIKI

Finally, Tobei Sugimura looks to make his first defence of the Ride the Tiger Title, against Crimson Tiger Ogai Miki.

32-year old Miki sits lowest on the tree of the Crimson Tigers, regularly taking the fall in multi-man action. This tour, he was twice bested in singles action against Sugimura's Ronin VII stablemates, Kita & Narahashi. However, they were both entertaining bouts, with the diminutive Miki showing he can go with some of the best SAISHO has to offer.

At just 5 foot 5 inches, Miki is underestimated by many, and that cost Sugimura on Jan. 21 as he embarrassingly took the fall in multi-man action. Keen to prove himself to Kita, he sought to punish Miki with kicks - only for Miki to grab a leg and roll through for a surprise pinfall.

A furious Sugimura then sought a singles match of his own against Miki at "Battleground 2020", offering a title shot as an incentive.

SAISHO "Battleground 2020"

Miyagino Ward Bunka Center - 24.01.2020

SAISHO Ride the Tiger: Tobei Sugimura © vs. Ogai Miki.

Can't see Miki being the Tiger champ that early in a save or maybe he'll never be.

Ronin VII (Azumamaro Kito, Fujio Narahashi & Shuzo Utagawa) vs. Lion Genji & The Night Terrors (Babau & Moroi).

Just the way cooler team here. I love Kita and Narahashi who were a big part (and still are) in WCG diary/save

Torajiro Sekozawa Return Match: Torajiro Sekozawa & Shiba Mizoguchi vs. The Diamond Dogs (Jimmy Stratosphere & Motty Kuroda).

I think this one will be wrong but I think it would be way cooler if the Dogs could beat the more experience team here.

Crimson Tigers (Zeshin Makioka, Akira Arato & Gidayu Katou) vs. The Coalition (Jayson Van Pelt & Billy Robinson) & Yuki Horigoshi.

Makioka, Arato and Katou sounds like a real badass team.

Special Singles Match: KAZ vs. Motoyuki Miyake.

Miyake is super talented but he shouldn't beat KAZ here. He needs something to do atfer his recent title loss.

SAISHO Destiny Tag Team Crowns: Isoruko Arakaki & MUSCLE Serizawa © vs. Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa.

Just a gut feeling.

SAISHO “BATTLEGROUND JAPAN 2020” RESULTS - COYOTE COMPANY REIGN SUPREME

SENDAI, Japan - Isoruko Arakaki & MUSCLE Serizawa capped off a sensation night for the Coyote Company, defeating A-1 Tag Team Grand Prix winners Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa to defend the Destiny Tag Team Crowns for the fourth time.

In a competitive bout that lasted over 24 minutes, Arakaki & Serizawa denied the veteran Ronin VII pairing of a fourth reign as champions, as Serizawa landed a brutal Backdrop Driver on Akamatsu to complete the pinfall and the champions' first defence of 2020. The pair were joined in the ring after the bout, in an awkward celebration with fellow Coyote Company members Torajiro Sekozawa & Shiba Mizoguchi, who had earlier prevailed against The Diamond Dogs. Sekozawa in particular showed significant ring rust in the short bout, although he got the pinfall in what was effectively his return bout - turning back the clock with a Dragon Suplex on Motti Kuroda.

MAKIOKA SET FOR FEB. 22 SHOWDOWN WITH "MR. SAISHO"

Meanwhile, SAISHO already has a main event set for "Guard of Honour" on Feb. 22, as Destiny Crown Champion Zeshin Makioka accepted a challenge from six-time champion KAZ.

Earlier in the evening, KAZ prevailed against future star Motoyuki Miyake in what was easily the match of the night. 24-year old Miyake produced a spirited display, matching "Mr. SAISHO" for more than 25 minutes. While at times he looked like the better wrestler, Miyake ultimately struggled to keep his intensity up for the whole bout, and ultimately succumbed to the ever professional KAZ who took his chance with a Power Bomb.

Later in the evening, Makioka combined with fellow Crimson Tigers, Akira Arato & Gidayu Katou to defeat The Coalition's Jayson Van Pelt & Billy Robinson and Yuki Horigoshi. An entertaining bout likely brings an end to Makioka's rivalry with Van Pelt (for now), and that was made clear as KAZ came to the ring after the bout, challenging Makioka to prove himself against the six-time Destiny Crown Champion at "Guard of Honour" - a challenge which Makioka readily accepted.

GENJI AND KITA RIVALRY THREATENS TO EXPLODE IN BAD NIGHT FOR RONIN VII

The rivalry between Lion Genji and Ronin VII leader Azumamaro Kita continues to hot up, as Genji took the edge with a pinfall over Rita's stable-mate Shuzo Utagawa.

The pair have been in hot competition since late last year - or indeed since Genji took a pair of singles wins over Kita, first in 2018 to claim the Destiny Crown and then again to defend it. Although the pair spent little time in the ring together in Sendai, the moments they had together were electric and there was little to separate them. Despite the presence of The Night Terrors and Fujio Narahashi, it was poor Utagawa who was the weak link as Genji pinned him with a German Suplex.

It was another tough loss for leading faction Ronin VII, despite the night starting promisingly following Tobei Sugimura's win over Ogai Miki. Sugimara shook off the disappointment of his pinfall loss earlier in the tour to Miki, clearly taking Miki more seriously before securing his first Ride the Tiger Title defence with a kick.

POST-SHOW INTERVIEWS:

"I won't stop until I beat him! I nearly had him tonight, and I will get him soon." Ronin VII's Azumamaro Kita was quick to shake off the disappointment of his team's loss to Lion Genji & The Night Terrors, vowing to get the best of Genji the next time they meet.

"He's still young, but he has what it takes. Just not yet!" With a title shot at "Guard of Honour" now in the bag, KAZ had rave reviews for young Motoyuki Miyake following their spirited match of the night in Sendai.

"An excellent start to the year - it's great to be back! Business as usual!" Veteran Torajiro Sekozawa resumed his role as Coyote Company spokesperson, clearly happy with his faction's two victories at "Battleground Japan 2020".

Destiny Crown defence to headline "Guard of Honour" Series

SENDAI, Japan - Zeshin Makioka's fourth defence of the Destiny Crown has been set for Feb. 22 at the Miyagino Ward Bunka Center, following a tense pre-series press conference for the SAISHO "Guard of Honour" series in Sendai.

Makioka accepted a challenge from six-time Destiny Crown champion KAZ last month, and despite showing respect there was far more disparaging of "Mr. SAISHO" during the pre-series press conference - describing KAZ as "yesterday's news". For KAZ's part, the veteran focused on Makioka's previous reliance on the other members of the Crimson Tigers - a criticism that had some force as the ensuing altercation saw Akira Arato, Gidayu Katou & Ogai Miki quickly join Makioka's side.

The Feb. 22 card continued to take shape, with the announcement that Lion Genji will face Fujio Narahashi in a Special Singles Match. Genji has been engaged in a heated rivalry with Narahashi's stablemate and long-time partner Azumamaro Kita, but here it was the hard-hitting Narahashi who put his name forward to best his fellow former champion. It's been a lean few years for Narahashi, who said he hopes a win over Genji will set him up for a real tilt at March's A-1 Grand Prix.

Speaking of which, Mito Miwa announced eight of the entrants for next month's A-1 Grand Prix - confirming that, regardless of the result of the Destiny Crown match at "Guard of Honour", the A-1 Grand Prix field will include Makioka and KAZ:

  • Azumamaro Kita (A-1 GP [2019], A-1 Tag Crown [2016], Destiny Crown [x3], Destiny Tag Team Crown)
  • Fujio Narahashi (A-1 GP [2015], A-1 Tag Crown [2016], Destiny Crown, Destiny Tag Team Crown)
  • KAZ (A-1 GP [2016, 2017], Destiny Crown [x6], Destiny Tag Team Crown [3])
  • Lion Genji (Destiny Crown)
  • Shiba Mizoguchi (A-1 Tag GP [2017], Destiny Crown, Destiny Tag Team Crown [2])
  • Tobei Sugimura (Ride the Tiger [x2])
  • Torajiro Sekozawa (A-1 Tag GP [2017], Destiny Crown [x2], Destiny Tag Team Crown [x3])
  • Zeshin Makioka (A-1 GP [2018], Destiny Crown)
  • TBD
  • TBD

With two spots up for grabs, Miwa also announced an eight-man tournament during the "Guard of Honour" series, with the winner of the final match on Feb. 22 earning a spot in the 2020 A-1 Grand Prix. It will be a huge opportunity for young wrestlers and non-SAISHO wrestlers alike, with Miwa announcing the following field: English grappler Billy Robinson; PGHW young lion Daigo Goya; highly rated young Crimson Tiger Gidayu Katou; former Ride the Tiger Champion Motoyuke Miyake; 32-year old high flyer Ogai Miki; talented young Ronin VII member Shuzo Utagawa; veteran GCG and BCG tag team specialists Toshinobu Taku; and "100% Machine" Yuki Horigoshi.

It's not totally clear what will happen with the tenth spot, but given the absence of Coalition representatives, it seems likely that Miwa is working with ACPW and OLLIE to work out the availability of former title contender, Jayson Van Pelt.

Finally, one other bout for Feb. 22 was announced as Ronin VII trio Azumamaro Kita and A-1 Tag Team Grand Prix winners Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa face IPW trio Night Terrors and JOJI.

ZESHIN MAKIOKA

Zeshin Makioka is a 33-year old brawler, who is perhaps best known for his lengthy run with WEXXV. Originally trained by WLW (although he left before officially graduating), when he first started out he was a skinny high flyer with a shock of bright yellow hair. It was after he was forced to sit out the latter half of 2010 with an injury that he morphed into his current persona, returning with his hair back to its natural colour, a good 40 pounds of bulk added to his frame and a brawling style that was far more effective than his old "spot monkey" style.

One of WEXXV's most reliable workers in terms of producing solid matches, Makioka was named WEXXV King of Death Matches on one occasion, and held the Blood Brothers Title alongside veteran Koichi Kajiwara on two occasions. It was therefore no surprise that after their closure he was much in demand, joining eventually signing with Mito Mia's Pro Wrestling SAISHO in March 2017.

Since then, Makioka has been a force to reckon with. Shortly after joining SAISHO, he formed the Crimson Tigers, a select group of ambitious wrestlers who have never been shy at backing Makioka up in a fight. He was also quick to success: defeating two-time defending champion - "Mr. SAISHO" himself, Kaz - to win the A-1 Grand Prix on his first attempt in 2018, and then pinning Lion Genji in September 2019 to claim the Destiny Crown for the first time. He's also become well known for him bone crushing slams and suplexes - and his fearsome knife edge chops which have left many an chest bruised and bloodied.

But a constant criticism of Makioka is his over reliance on his Crimson Tigers stable mates to advance within SAISHO. That criticism was levelled at Makioka by Mito Miwa himself in late 2019, and he has since then appeared resolute in proving himself a worthy holder of the Destiny Crown.

Only time will tell whether he falls back on old methods.

GUARD OF HONOUR

Pro Wrestling SAISHO rolls on in Sendai, with its second big event of the year: "Guard of Honour" from the Miyagino Ward Bunka Center on Feb. 22.

For the second time this year, Zeshin Makioka looks to defend the Destiny Crown, but standing in his way is "Mr. SAISHO" KAZ - a man looking to become champion for an incredible seventh time.

Plus - there's special singles action, as Fujio Narahashi looks to stake his claim to the A-1 Grand Prix against Lion Genji; exciting trio JOJI, Babau & Moroi do battle with Ronin VII; and Motoyuke Miyake and Billy Robinson face off for a spot in next month's A-1 Grand Prix!

DESTINY CROWN

ZESHIN MAKIOKA © vs. KAZ

It took a little over two years after his arrival in SAISHO for Zeshin Makioka to win the Destiny Crown, and here he faces his sternest test yet - seeking to make a fourth defence against KAZ.

KAZ, a six time champion, has had a strong start to the year, with the high point being an excellent singles win at "Battleground 2020" over Motoyuke Miyake. Makioka would no doubt have been hoping to put a dent in the veteran's confidence during the "Guard of Honour" tour, but it was KAZ who was on the winning side on two of the three occasions they met - including in the final night at the Miyagino Ward Cultural Center Theater Hall, where he combined with his proteges Jinzaburo Kakinomoto & Naruhiko Koizumi to beat Makioka, Akira Arato & Gidayu Katou.

While the stakes are high enough with the Destiny Crown on the line, there seems to be some real bad blood between Makioka and KAZ - after Makioka recklessly broke KAZ's fingers during the tour by stepping on them.

SPECIAL SINGLES MATCH

FUJIO NARAHASHI vs. LION GENJI

The penultimate bout of the evening could be a real sleeper, as former Destiny Crown Champions Fujio Narahashi and Lion Genji do battle in an A-1 Grand Prix preview.

Narahashi has had a low key start to the year, often playing second fiddle to his partner Azumamaro Kita in the latter's heated rivalry with Genji. But here he looks to make his mark nearly five years since claiming the inaugural A-1 Grand Prix by claiming the big scalp of Genji.

Genji has had a sensational start to the year, winning the year opening battle royal and picking up the pinfall over Kita's team at "Battleground 2020". Since dropping the title to Makioka in September 2019, he's shown incredible focus on earning another shot - and he's the pick of many to win the A-1 Grand Prix this year.

RONIN VII (AZUMAMARO KITA, KINJI AKAMATSU & TORCH NAKAZAWA) vs. THE NIGHT TERRORS (BABAU & MOROI) & JOJI

Former GCG high flyer JOJI makes his return to high profile Japanese wrestling, combining with former Destiny Tag Team Crown Champions The Night Terrors to face Ronin VII's Azumamaro Kita, Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa.

JOJI is perhaps best known for a failed drug test, but now a veteran with more than a decade's experience some Japanese promotions (including Mito Miwa's) finally seem ready to give him another chance. He combines with Babau & Moroi who have silently been building a good track record, including two multi-man wins over the current tag champions. A good showing here against a strong Ronin VII outfit could see them well-placed for another shot at the Crowns.

COYOTE COMPANY (TORAJIRO SEKOZAWA, ISORUKO ARAKAKI, MUSCLE SERIZAWA & SHIBA MIZOUCHI) vs. CRIMSON TIGERS (AKIRA ARATO, GIDAYU KATOU & OGAI MIKI) & TOBEI SUGIMURA

Torajiro Sekozawa is joined by a full complement of his Coyote Company stablemates, facing off against the unlikely pairing of three Crimson Tigers and Ronin VII's Tobei Sugimura.

In reality, Sugimura was drafted in at the last minute following the abrupt departure of Yuki Horigoshi (who was angered at some of the booking decisions during the tour and walked out). But it's a great chance for him to prove himself ahead of next month's A-1 Grand Prix, with Coyote Company including two former Destiny Crown Champions and A-1 GP competitors: Sekozawa and Mizoguchi.

Meanwhile, young pairing Arato & Katou will be hoping to prove themselves against the tag champions Arakaki & Serizawa, knowing that a good showing could hold them in good stead for a future title shot.

REBEL (JINZABURO KAKINOMOTO & NARUHIKO KOIZUMI) vs. THE DIAMOND DOGS (JIMMY STRATOSPHERE & MOTTY KURODA)

The Diamond Dogs have had a very rough start to the year, often finding themselves on the losing end of "tune up" bouts for higher profile opponents. In fact, they've picked up just two wins - although the most recent, on the final night of the "Guard of Honour" tour, was very impressive as they bested the makeshift pairing of Jayson Van Pelt & Lion Genji.

Nevertheless, it's been a disappointing start for the two-time Destiny Tag Team Crown Champions - a start they will hope to put behind them against young lion pairing Jinzaburo Kakinomoto & Naruhiko Koizumi. Along with their mentor KAZ, Kakinomoto & Koizumi have been exposed to some high profile bouts and, although not always successful, will be hoping to put what they've learned to the test.

A-1 GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER - FINAL

BILLY ROBINSON vs. MOTOYUKE MIYAKE

In the night's opening bout, "So Solid" Billy Robinson faces off against former Ride the Tiger Champion Motoyuke Miyake for a spot in next month's A-1 Grand Prix.

Both men had impressive pathways to the final of an eight-man tournament which was held throughout the "Guard of Honour" tour: Robinson picked up submission wins over Yuki Horigoshi and Crimson Tiger Ogai Miki, while Miyake bounced back from his narrow loss to KAZ at "Battleground 2020" to best BCG veteran Toshinobu Taku and Crimson Tiger Gidayu Katou.

The big question will be whether Miyake can avoid the solid technical game of Robinson, or whether the Englishman can wear down the flashy Miyake. Either way, the winner will be a valuable (and match fit) addition to next month's GP.

SAISHO “GUARD OF HONOUR” RESULTS - MAKIOKA CONQUERS "MR. SAISHO"

SENDAI, Japan - Zeshin Makioka made his fourth defence of SAISHO's Destiny Crown, besting six-time champion KAZ in front of 207 fans at the Miyagino Ward Bunka Center in Sendai.

In the champion's biggest test since winning the Destiny Crown last September, Makioka had some difficulty adjusting to KAZ's aggressive aerial style. For his part, KAZ knew he had little scope for error - knowing full well that Makioka would punish any mistake without hesitation.

Makioka can at times be criticised for his ability to "go the distance", with many expecting a long bout to be likely to play into KAZ's hands. But the challenger's constant offence clearly took its toll, and as the bout passed the twenty minute mark both were struggling.

While KAZ continued to show impressive skills, he clearly isn't the athlete he was in his early years. A missed attack from the top rope was all Makioka needed - flooring KAZ with a heavy Muscle Buster to complete the defence.

It was a huge win for Makioka, who was joined in the ring by his Crimson Tigers stablemates. Clearly relieved, Makioka will no doubt understand he has little time to celebrate - with the gruelling A-1 GP set to take place next month.

LION GENJI CEMENTS STATUS AS A-1 GP CONTENDER

Meanwhile, Lion Genji and Ronin VII's Fujio Narahashi had undoubtedly the match of the night in an unforgiving Special Singles Match.

Much had been made of Genji's chances of claiming his first A-1 Grand Prix victory next month, but he was clearly not looking far beyond his immediate opponent - the stocky and powerful Narahashi.

Narahashi meanwhile fought like a man possessed. Incensed by Genji's recent success over Ronin VII and intent on showing his credentials ahead of the A-1 GP, Narahashi was on the offence early - perfectly comfortable to take the bout to the outside and use the surrounds of the ring to his advantage.

But Genji is an exceptional wrestler and a former champion for a reason - he managed to fight off the heavy strikes of Narahashi, using his technical wizardry and speed to put Narahashi down. After an ebbing-and-flowing bout, it was Genji who struck the decisive blow: landing a Fusion Reactor on Narahashi to put the rest of SAISHO firmly on notice.

MIYAKE JOINS TOP ECHELON AS RONIN VII OTHERWISE STUMBLE

Former Ride the Tiger Champion Motoyuke Miyake earned a spot in the A-1 Grand Prix for the very first time, winning the qualifying tournament final over English grappler Billy Robinson.

To the surprise of no one, Robinson spent the match trying to wear Miyake down with his relentless grappling game. But even this crowd, which can appreciate the nuances of grappling, grew restless with Robinson's style, and was firmly behind the Japanese wrestler as he staged his comeback.

The pace of the bout started to lift, but just as it started to get into gear it came to an abrupt finish of sorts: Miyake landing a Kick to the jaw of Robinson for the three count. After a beat, the crowd expressed their support for young Miyake, who was joined in the ring by Mito Miwa who, in a rare appearance, congratulated Miyake for his win.

Much to their frustration, Miyake was the only successful Ronin VII at "Guard of Honour". In addition to Narahashi's loss, the team of Azumamaro Kita, Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa lost to Invincible Pro Wrestling trio Babau, Moroi & JOJI) (with Moroi getting the pinfall), while Tobei Sugimura's brief alliance with the Crimson Tigers ended in defeat, as team mate Ogai Miki (who he bested last month in a title match) was pinned by Coyote Company member and A-1 GP competitor Shiba Mizoguchi.

DIAMOND VICTORY FOR STRATOSPHERE & KURODA

Finally, in other action, The Diamond Dogs picked up just their third win of the year, beating young tag team Jinzoburo Kakinomoto & Naruhiko Koizumi. The young lions put up a spirited display, but weren't good enough against the two-time tag champions - Kuroda getting the pinfall after a Legsweep DDT.

POST-SHOW INTERVIEWS:

"The Coyote Company runs this town! We showed it at Battleground 2020, and we showed it again here tonight!" Coyote Company leader Torajiro Sekozawa felt confident following his stable's win over members of the Crimson Tigers and Ronin VII.

"Don't doubt me again! Ha-ha-a-a!" After his fourth title defence, Zeshin Makioka had a very simple message for the quickly diminishing pool of his detractors.

"My time will come again - and I'm sure they'll be champions when I return" It was a successful return to the Japanese stage for JOJI, who promoted his partners Babau & Moroi as the natural next contenders for the Destiny Tag Team Crown.

SAISHO “18TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW” RESULTS - COYOTE REIGNS SUPREME IN A-1 GP PREVIEW

SENDAI, Japan - Mito Miwa’s Pro Wrestling SAISHO celebrated its 18th Anniversary last night in front of 147 fans at the Miyagino Ward Bunka Center in Sendai.

“The Pride Warrior” himself opened the show to a rapturous reaction from the small crowd of dedicated SAISHO fans, thanking them for their continued support after a tumultuous few years. Miwa also announced the brackets for next month’s sixth instalment of the A-1 Grand Prix - with two blocks of five named after three-time Destiny Crown Champion Hirokazu Yamanoue and two-time Destiny Crown Champion Stone Yoshikawa, respectively:

YAMANOUE BLOCK

  • Azumamaro Kita (A-1 GP [2019], A-1 Tag Crown [2016], Destiny Crown [x3], Destiny Tag Team Crown)
  • Fujio Narahashi (A-1 GP [2015], A-1 Tag Crown [2016], Destiny Crown, Destiny Tag Team Crown)
  • KAZ (A-1 GP [2016, 2017], Destiny Crown [x6], Destiny Tag Team Crown [3])
  • Motoyuke Miyake (Ride the Tiger)
  • Shiba Mizoguchi (A-1 Tag GP [2017], Destiny Crown, Destiny Tag Team Crown [2])

YOSHIKAWA BLOCK

  • Lion Genji (Destiny Crown, GCG Openweight)
  • Jayson Van Pelt (Ride the Tiger [x2], ACPW Junior Heavyweight, ACPW Canadian Regional [x4])
  • Tobei Sugimura (Ride the Tiger [x2], EXODUS All-Asia Junior Heavyweight)
  • Torajiro Sekozawa (A-1 Tag GP [2017], Destiny Crown [x2], Destiny Tag Team Crown [x3])
  • Zeshin Makioka (A-1 GP [2018], Destiny Crown (Current), WEXXV King of Death Matches)

There were shockwaves through the crowd - and the locker room - with the announcement of the Yamanoue Block in particular drawing audible gasps, due to the presence of three members of Ronin VII - Kita, Narahashi and Miyake - who will be forced to face off in singles action. There was also excitement over the Yoshikawa Block, which will see a re-match of last September’s Destiny Crown match between Lion Genji and Zeshin Makioka.

The crowd was also treated to a rare 5 vs. 5 match, pitting the Yamanoue Block competitors against the Yoshikawa Block competitors in a preview of the A-1 GP series. In a lengthy match which allowed everyone to get their spots in, it was ultimately the veteran Torajiro Sekozawa who picked up the pinfall - hitting youngster Motoyuke Miyake with a Dragon Suplex, which will leave Miyake in no doubt as to the challenges he will face in his first GP appearance.

The show was otherwise more of a celebration, although there was some spirited action between the tag champions Isoruko Arakaki & Torch Nakazawa and the former champions The Night Terrors. In other action, there was very nearly a catastrophe as Kinji Akamatsu botched the finish in his tag match - the awkward Magma-Driver leaving youngster Akira Arato with significant back pain and causing some apparent tension backstage after the match.

The six-date A-1 GP Series kicks off next month.

POST-SHOW INTERVIEWS:

I haven’t given up. I went to war with Zeshin Makioka, and I’m ready to do it again if needed! I will win the Destiny Crown again!” - Fresh off a disappointing loss against Destiny Crown Champion Zeshin Makioka at “Guard of Honour”, six-time champion KAZ remains intent on claiming the title for a seventh time. What better place to make his case than in the A-1 Grand Prix?

I’ve no doubt we’ll be able to put our differences aside if it comes to that — when it comes to that!” - Coyote Company member and former Destiny Crown Champion Shiba Mizoguchi was confident that he would be facing off against his stablemate Torajiro Sekozawa come the finals of the A-1 Grand Prix.

Tonight was a wake up call! I will take this time to rest, and prove myself against the very best” - After winning his way into his first A-1 Grand Prix, Motoyuke Miyake received a wake-up call in the main event of the Anniversary Show.

Big big win for Miyake that can become one of your biggest star

Yep - he's a very good prospect, but still has a long way to go! I'm hoping I can find something to do with Akira Arato & Gidayu Katou too, although what looks like a long-term back injury to Arato (which he can work through) will hurt.

Oh Jesus I already missed a bunch of stuff here, big sorry. My predictions were quite awful at the beginning lol, but it is what it is right. The Yamanoue Block looks like a real killer group - For me Shiba Mizoguchi will be at the bottom of the block but every other competitor could be at the top on the last day.

Schedule set for sixth instalment of SAISHO’s A-1 Grand Prix

SENDAI, Japan - The ten competitors in Pro Wrestling SAISHO's upcoming A-1 Grand Prix joined legend Mito Miwa ahead of this month's tour - one of the highlights of the SAISHO schedule - which will take place across three key cities in the Tohoko region.

The field includes six Destiny Crown Champions - and all four previous winners of the A-1 Grand Prix - but also involves some exciting young talent such as Motoyuke Miyake and Ride the Tiger Champion Tobei Sugimura.

All ten competitors seemed confident of their chances, but the reigning Destiny Crown Champion Zeshin Makioka appeared to be the favourite notwithstanding a gruelling start to his year. Other key competitors include Lion Genji, who was coming off a fantastic win over Fujio Narahashi at "Guard of Honour"; Ronin VII representative Azumamaro Kita; battle hardened Coyote Company members, Torajiro Sekozawa and Shiba Mizoguchi; and six-time Destiny Crown Champion KAZ.

There's a number of mouthwatering encounters set to take place, but highlights include an all-Ronin VII bout between Kita and Narahashi in Iwaki (on Mar. 6); a likely hard-hitting affair between Sekozawa and Makioka in Koriyama (on Mar. 7); a battle of former Destiny Crown Champions, KAZ and Mizoguchi (on Mar. 10); and an exciting double header on the final block night (on Mar. 12), with Narahashi vs. KAZ and Genji vs. Makioka looming likely to shape the competitors in the final.

Miwa also announced that the series ending show at Miyagino Ward Bunka Center will feature two special tag team matches: the first seeing Isoruko Arakaki & MUSCLE Serizawa defend their Destiny Tag Team Crowns against The Night Terrors, while two teams hot on their tails, The Diamond Dogs and The Hurt will also do battle.

The six-night "2020 A-1 Grand Prix" Series kicks off from Iwaki City Gymnasium on Mar. 4.

No problems - thanks for checking in! Yes, the Yamanoue Block look strong, but Mizoguchi is a former Destiny Crown Champion himself (something I didn't realise until I was half way through the second tour...).

  1. A-1 Grand Prix - Yoshikawa Block: Zeshin Makioka [2] defeated Jayson Van Pelt [0] (12:29) with a Muscle Buster. [49]
  2. The Night Terrors (Babau & Moroi), The Diamond Dogs (Jimmy Stratosphere & Motti Kuroda) & Ogai Miki defeated Coyote Company (Isoruko Arakaki & MUSCLE Serozawa), The Hurt (Billy Robinson & Nigel Svensson) & Shuzo Utagawa (8:29) with a Running Knee from Miki to Utagawa. [49]
  3. REBEL (KAZ, Jinzaburo Kakinomoto & Naruhiko Koizumi) defeated Ronin VII (Tobei Sugimura, Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa) (9:40) with a Super Rana from KAZ to Akamatsu. [44]
  4. A-1 Grand Prix - Yamanoue Block: Shiba Mizoguchi [2] defeated Fujio Narahashi [0] (19:40) with a Jumping Lariat. [50]
  5. A-1 Grand Prix - Yamanoue Block: Azumamaro Kita [2] defeated Motoyuke Miyake [0] (12:24) with a Fisherman Suplex Hold. [53]
  6. A-1 Grand Prix - Yoshikawa Block: Lion Genji [2] defeated Torajiro Sekozawa [0] (24:01) with a Fast Roll Up. [43]

  • A rough first show in Iwaki, as the main event failed to deliver. At 44 years of age, Torajiro Sekozawa is the oldest man in the field - and the 24 minute main event was too much for him, even opposite a great worker like Lion Genji and with a slow build. Ultimately, the result went the way of Genji - getting a quick roll-up on Sekozawa for his first two points of the tour.
  • There was better action elsewhere, as former A-1 GP winner Azumamaro Kita picked up his first points against Ronin VII ally Motoyuke Miyake. Their compatriot Fujio Narahashi, however, had a difficult start - suffering a surprise defeat against Shiba Mizoguchi and his Jumping Lariat.
  • Destiny Crown Champion Zeshin Makioka made the perfect start to his Grand Prix in the opening bout of the series, defeating Jayson Van Pelt for the second time this year with his Muscle Buster.

  1. The Hurt (Billy Robinson & Nigel Svensson) defeated REBEL (Jinzaburo Kakinomoto & Naruhiko Koizumi) (6:31) with a Capital City Crucifix from Robinson to Koizumi. [43]
  2. Shiba Mizoguchi, Kinji Akamatsu & Torch Nakazawa defeated Crimson Tigers (Zeshin Makioka, Akira Arato & Gidayu Katou) (10:15) with a Jumping Lariat from Mizoguchi to Arato. [42]
  3. Isoruko Arakaki, MUSCLE Serizawa & Shuzo Utagawa defeated The Night Terrors (Babau & Moroi) & Ogai Miki (7:01) with a Spike Piledriver from Arakaki to Miki. [49]
  4. A-1 Grand Prix - Yoshikawa Block: Lion Genji [4] defeated Jayson Van Pelt (10:03) with a German Suplex Hold. [55]
  5. A-1 Grand Prix - Yamanoue Block: KAZ [2] defeated Motoyuke Miyake [0] (12:25) with a Super Rana. [52]
  6. A-1 Grand Prix - Yoshikawa Block: Torajiro Sekozawa [2] defeated Tobei Sugimura [0] (9:13) with a Dragon Suplex. [46]
  7. A-1 Grand Prix - Yamanoue Block: Azumamaro Kita [3] vs. Fujio Narahashi [1] - Time Limit Draw (30:00). [51]

  • There was better action in the second show at the Iwaki City Gymnasium, in particular a ferocious match between Lion Genji and Jayson Van Pelt. Neither man left anything in reserve in their ten minute, high octane bout, which only ended with a Fusion Reactor from Genji. Genji moves to 4 points and the outright lead in the Yoshikawa Block (albeit with an extra match), while Van Pelt is already falling behind the pack.
  • The main event saw long-time tag partners Azumamaro Kita and Fujio Narahashi do battle. Both men looked motivated, but failed the pull the trigger at the important moments - perhaps not quite able to throw their long-term friendship aside. As the match petered out to a Time Limit Draw, both men will no doubt wonder whether their failure to capitalise on opportunities here in Iwaki will ultimately cost them.
  • Shiba Mizoguchi and Zeshin Makioka had byes tonight, but kept their skills sharp in multi-man action. Ultimately, despite being with his fellow Crimson Tigers Akira Arato & Gidayu Katou, Makioka was the loser on the night - watching on as Arato was struck by a Jumping Lariat from Mizoguchi. The former Destiny Crown Champion is perhaps a sleeper in this tournament.
  • Elsewhere, the tag rivalry between Isoruko Arakaki & MUSCLE Serizawa and The Night Terrors continues to heat up, after the Destiny Tag Team Crown Champions got a measure of revenge for their team's loss on the first night of the tour. The two teams meet for the titles in Sendai on Mar. 13.
