GLEAT ~ Rising With A Golden Star

What is GLEAT? GLEAT is a Japanese professional wrestling and mixed martial arts promotion founded in 2020 by former Pro Wrestling Noah parent company Lidet Entertainment after the acquisition of NOAH and DDT Pro-Wrestling by CyberAgent. The promotion is overseen by Hiroyuki Suzuki and former mixed martial artist and professional wrestler Kiyoshi Tamura. The promotion emphasizes the use of the UWFi combat sports-based wrestling style.

Where our journey begins: GLEAT held their biggest show "GLEAT Ver. Mega" on August 4th, 2023 at Ryogoku Kokugikan. That show featured a team assembled by "Golden Star" Kota Ibushi against 5 of GLEAT's rising stars under the age of 30 in the main event.  However, attendance wasn't what GLEAT management expected of a show headlined by Kota Ibushi's Japan return bout. The show drew just over 2,000 spectators making it the lowest drawing show in the venue in 2023. NJPW for example drew 6,500 and 8,000 spectators respectively just a few days later for the G1 Climax Semi Finals and Finals. Streaming the event for free on YouTube probably didn't help in this regard...  Although the show did not draw as many spectators as he had hoped, Hiroyuki Suzuki entered negotiations with Kota Ibushi, feeling as though having the popular star affiliated with GLEAT would be beneficial to the brand.

Golden Star joins GLEAT

Tokyo, 08.11.2023 - Kota Ibushi has officially signed with GLEAT.

After having his first match in Japan since October 2021 at GLEAT Ver. Mega, Lidet Entertainment is excited to announce that Kota Ibushi has signed a three-year contract to compete in GLEAT. The deal will allow him to compete in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in the United States and in other Japanese promotions.

Kota Ibushi's participation in GLEAT Ver. Mega provided a preview of what may come when he faced five of GLEAT's young talents.

"We are excited to welcome Kota Ibushi to GLEAT and that he has decided to call GLEAT home for the next three years.," said Hiroyuki Suzuki, President of Lidet Entertainment.  "We are committed to continuing to grow GLEAT and having an athlete as accomplished and respected as Kota Ibushi is the next step in that growth."

Fans and followers of Kota Ibushi are encouraged to stay tuned for announcements regarding his upcoming appearances.

GLEAT MMA update

Tokyo, 08.11.2023 - Effective immediately GLEAT Pro Wrestling and GLEAT MMA will operate entirely independently of one another with separate management. Going forward there will not be MMA bouts on GLEAT Pro Wrestling events. Some fighters may still appear in both Pro Wrestling and MMA bouts.

Ah, that's a bit of a bummer. There's something I love about the IRL GLEAT just having a couple of random MMA matches on the card. It had a kind of PRIDE-style freakshow absurdity that I enjoyed.

thank god! Wish IRL GLEAT would get rid of those abominations

Ah, the duality of GLEAT MMA...

I loved PRIDE. I don't follow MMA much these days. Separating GLEAT MMA from GLEAT Pro Wrestling was done partly because I don't know how well booking that in TEW would go and partly because I doubt I'd be inspired to do much with the MMA portion anyway LOL!

GLEAT "G PROWRESTLING Ver.57" Card Announced

Osaka's Umeda Sky Building Stella Hall will experience the first wave of fallout from GLEAT Ver. Mega on August 19th!

The opening bout will feature AJPW's Rising HAYATO and Ryo Inoue against CIMA and Junjie as GLEAT and AJPW continue to foster a strong partnership. Rising HAYATO is next in line to challenge El Lindaman who currently holds the AJPW World Junior Heavyweight Championship.

DIAMOND EGOIST came out on the losing end at "Gleat Ver. Mega". In Osaka DIAMOND EGOIST's MICHIKO and Janai Kai will take on Unagi Sayaka and Yukari Hosokawa in tag team action as the war between MICHIKO And Unagi rages on!

Kotaro Suzuki of Black Generation International will team with Yuya Susumu to face Kaz Hayashi and Soma Watanabe. Kaito Ishida invited both Yuya Susumu and Keiichi Sato to join BGI at "G PROWRESTLING Ver.56" but only Sato accepted at that time. Perhaps Ishida has sent Suzuki to team with Susumu to warm him up to the idea of accepting that invitation!

Osaka's own Osaka Pro Wrestling will be represented as Osaka Pro owner Zeus and Osaka Light Heavyweight Champion Tigers Mask face Quiet Storm and KAZMA Sakamoto of BULK ORCHESTRA! Quiet Storm has extensive history in Osaka Pro and is scheduled to face Tigers Mask for the vacant Osaka Pro Championship the following night.

AJPW's GAORA TV Championship will be on the line as the champion Minoru Tanaka accepted Jun Tonsho's challenge that was made backstage at "GLEAT Ver. Mega"! It was at that event that Tonsho tagged with Hiromu Takahashi and Atsuki Aoyagi against CIMA, Kaz Hayashi and Minoru Tanaka and fell to a Meteora from CIMA! Can Tonsho now defeat one of the veteran competitors one on one?

BULK ORCHESTRA and Yan's Family will clash as Ryuichi Kawakami, Check Shimatani and Hayato Tamura clash with Takanori Ito, Issei Onitsuka and Yusuke Kodama! "GLEAT Ver. Mega" did not go as planned for any of the competitors involved in this bout so both teams will be looking to turn things around!

The semi main event will see STRONGHEARTS represented by the G-REX Champion T-Hawk and AJPW World Junior Heavyweight Champion El Lindaman against Tetsuya Izuchi and Yu Iizuka. T-Hawk made his frustrations clear at "GLEAT Ver. Mega" about not being in the main event and yet again in Osaka his match comes before Kota Ibushi's.

At GLEAT Ver. Mega it was Black Generation International's leader Kaito Ishida who was the final fighter to fall against Kota Ibushi. After the match Ibushi declared he was open to a singles match with Ishida. At "G PROWRESTLING Ver. 57" the main event will be a 3V3 match pitting Black Generation International represented by newest member Keiichi Sato, Hartley Jackson and YUTANI against Kota Ibushi and a team he has personally invited to GLEAT... the team known as "Astronauts" Fuminori Abe and Takuya Nomura!

GLEAT "G PROWRESTLING Ver.57"

August 19, 2023

Umeda Sky Building Stella Hall in Osaka

0PPAoKXs.jpg CHRiyTys.jpg n0KXvwis.png szW3N0Xs.jpg SvIvtqNs.jpg

CIMA & Junjie vs. Rising HAYATO & Ryo Inoue

The show opened with STRONGHEARTS members CIMA and Junjie facing off against AJPW fighters and members of the Zennichi Shin Jidai faction Rising HAYATO and Ryo Inoue. El Lindaman joined commentary for this bout as Rising HAYATO is his next challenger for the AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Championship and was facing his STRONGHEARTS allies. The match was fairly evenly matched with CIMA and HAYATO getting the most ring time. The match concluded with HAYATO pinning Junjie after a beautifully executed Top Rope Springboard Moonsault.

Winners: Rising HAYATO & Ryo Inoue

Unagi Sayaka & Yukari Hosokawa vs. MICHIKO & Janai Kai

MICHIKO and Unagi Sayaka have been at war with each other since April and it was clear in this bout that there is plenty of animosity between the two. The match came to an end with MICHIKO and Unagi brawling on the outside, paying no mind to the action in the ring as Janai Kai finished Yukari Hosokawa off with a vicious Tornado Kick to score the victory via pinfall.

Winners: MICHIKO & Janai Kai

Kaz Hayashi & Soma Watanabe vs. Kotaro Suzuki & Yuya Susumu

Black Generation International's Kotaro Suzuki teamed with Yuya Susumu who has a standing offer to join BGI to take on Kaz Hayashi and Soma Watanabe. Suzuki and Susumu worked well together and emerged victorious when pinned Hayashi after utilizing his Front Crash finisher.

Winners: Kotaro Suzuki & Yuya Susumu

After the match Suzuki reminded Susumu of Kaito Ishida's invite to join BGI stating “it’s now or never”. Susumu replied, “If Ishida can't be patient while I make a decision then I guess it's never!” This led to Suzuki attacking him, but Soma Watanabe made the save!

KAZMA Sakamoto & Quiet Storm vs. Zeus & Tigers Mask

Osaka's own Zeus and Tigers Mask were up next, taking on BULK ORCHESTRA's KAZMA Sakamoto and Quiet Storm. With Storm and Tigers Mask scheduled to clash for the Osaka Pro Championship on the following night, both men were looking to head into that match with momentum. The Osaka natives had the advantage early on thanks to Zeus but ultimately came up short after Quiet Storm blasted Zeus with his 50CM Arm Lariat!

Winners: KAZMA Sakamoto & Quiet Storm

Minoru Tanaka (C) vs. Jun Tonsho

Minoru Tanaka looked to retain the GAORA TV Championship in this AJPW sanctioned title bout against Jun Tonsho. Tonsho was fired up after his loss at "GLEAT Ver. Mega" and used that intensity to his advantage against the veteran competitor. Tonsho nearly won with a Dragon Suplex hold, but Tanaka kicked out at 2.9. Tonsho couldn't believe it and petitioned the referee, but this turned out to be a fatal error as Tanaka had made a quick recovery and Tonsho turned into a Minoru Special!

Winner: Minoru Tanaka

After the match Tanaka offered a handshake to Tonsho, but a dejected Tonsho refused and left the ring! Tanaka shrugged it off and thanked the fans before leaving the ring himself.

Ryuichi Kawakami, Check Shimatani, Hayato Tamura vs. Takanori Ito, Issei Onitsuka, Yusuke Kodama

With both factions in the hole after "GLEAT Ver. Mega" this match was must-win for both BULK ORCHESTRA and Yan's Family. The teams traded the advantage back and forth in the early goings of the match. A standout moment of the match was a particularly stiff exchange of strikes between former LIDET UWF Champion Takanori Ito and the most recent challenger to the G-REX Championship Hayato Tamura. The match became chaotic around the 10 minute mark with all six men brawling leading to a turning point for BULK ORCHESTRA when Check Shimatani dove to the outside onto all three members of Yan's Family! It was shortly after this that Hayato Tamura scored the victory for BULK ORCHESTRA with a Jackhammer on Yusuke Kodama!

Winners: Ryuichi Kawakami, Check Shimatani, Hayato Tamura

T-Hawk & El Lindaman vs. Tetsuya Izuchi & Yu Iizuka

The G-REX Champion and AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Champion were in action next as STRONGHEARTS members T-Hawk and El Lindman faced Tetsuya Izuchi and Yu Iizuka. T-Hawk was visibly irritated, presumably due to Kota Ibushi being in the main event over him once again. This irritation translated into a more vicious side of T-Hawk emerging during the match. T-Hawk's rage blinded him after a knee to the jaw from Iizuka. T-Hawk retaliated with a rough elbow to the mouth of Iizuka and the two brawled, spilling to the outside of the ring. T-Hawk got the better of Iizuka in their brawl on the outside, leaving El Lindaman and Tetsuya Izuchi to battle inside of the ring. El Lindaman went for a pinfall with a sunset flip, but Izuchi rolled out of it and almost out of nowhere he blasted Lindaman with his Spin Break spinning elbow and scored the victory via pinfall!

Winners: Tetsuya Izuchi & Yu Iizuka

Post-match T-Hawk was furious about the loss. El Lindaman tried to apologize and calm his friend and stablemate down, but T-Hawk responded by shoving Lindaman and leaving the ringside area without him!

Kota Ibushi, Fuminori Abe, Takuya Nomura vs. Keiichi Sato, Hartley Jackson, Yutani

It was main event time in Osaka as Kota Ibushi, Fuminori Abe and Takuya Nomura, collectively billed as "Golden Astronauts" did battle with Black Generation International members Keiichi Sato, Hartley Jackson and Yutani. The BGI members all wanted a piece of Ibushi, wanting to weaken him for Kaito Ishida's eventual encounter with the Golden Star. They managed to take advantage early on through some questionable tactics, working Ibushi over and keeping him isolated in their corner. Ibushi picked his partners well though as they weren't going to allow BGI to continue to cheat their way to victory and stormed the ring the second time they employed dirty tactics. The match came to a close with Yutani isolated in the ring with all three of the Golden Astronauts. Abe drilled Yutani with a brutal headbutt, Nomura nailed him with a high kick that dropped him to his knees and Ibushi finished him with a Kamigoye!

Winners: Kota Ibushi, Fuminori Abe, Takuya Nomura

Ibushi cut a post-match promo praising Fuminori Abe and Takuya Nomura. He suggested that Golden Astronauts should be more than a one-time partnership, but stated he didn't expect an answer now. He then proposed that he and Kaito Ishida have their match at the next Korakuen Hall show in September, pending the approval of Commissioner Masato Yoshino. Ibushi closed his promo by thanking the Osaka crowd.
