  1. Dennis Condrey. And he did it twice, btw. Loads of guys left territories unannounced regardless of upcoming payday based on burnout. It wasn't unheard of at all, and is quite realistic. Tie it to personality and current mood. As an aside: Very unlikely he could've done that. He walked out in the middle of a contract. The contract was still in effect. And Vince was known to tie in temporary "no compete" clauses in there in some cases as well either way.

Wrestling Challenge was the B show. Prime Time was the C show (and All-American and Spotlight, although these were lesser in the scheme of things than Prime Time).</p><p> </p><p> The format was different with regards to the TV being mostly jobber matches and interviews and mini angles used to sell house shows (and later, as time went on, PPVs), but the A shows were still where the few major angles took place, and the B shows less so. </p><p> </p><p> Superstars was where the Hogan vs. Andre angle launched from, and so too Savage vs. Steamboat (crushed larynx angle) and Piper vs. Adonis stuff. Challenge had the lesser angles when they happened, like Jake vs. Honky Tonk (guitar shot on Snake Pit) and the Ken Patera Story angle that set up Heenan Family vs. Patera. Challenge replayed angles from Superstars, Prime Time replayed angles from both.</p><p> </p><p> The A show, B show dichotomy, of one being more important than the other, existed back then too. The real difference between then and nowadays was with regards to the jobber matches and house show focus, which would be a better setting change for eras than removing A TV shows completely and making everything B shows. Instead, decrease the importance of or the penalties levied upon the matches on the TV shows more for those earlier eras. And maybe increase the importance of non-televised events, too (it'd be great if one could hands on book house show loops, but that may be too intricate/time consuming for most players. Maybe as an option?).</p>
  4. It was a bit simpler in previous TEWs, via some careful manipulation of trends for each area, but that was somewhat taken out of the user's hands this time around. A step backwards there, as it would've been better for allowing that same freedom for the user or mods to set it in the database editor (not the in-game editor, mind you) but actually broadening it so that it would be for each region as well. Ah, well. Maybe in the next TEW.
  5. A bit late to the party with this mod, but the talk of WCW Pro and Worldwide piqued my interest: WCW Pro was originally on syndication (as NWA Pro Wrestling, later renamed when the company itself was renamed) and only later added to TBS (in 1994). It continued to air in syndication even after that, but just on less stations than the old NWA Pro and early WCW Pro days (believe it or not, there was a point in time where Pro was the A show for JCP NWA). When it started airing on TBS, the original timeslot was Saturday mornings. By Fall '96 had been moved to Sunday late afternoon/early evening (5pm). TBS cancelled it when Thunder started, but it still was shown in syndication with one or two exclusive matches (it was mostly recap show by that point, though). So, for this mod, it should be airing Sunday early evenings on TBS and, if folks want to add the syndicated airings on top of that...well, depends on how you want to balance that. If you just go with an umbrella "syndication" broadcaster, it should be one with less of a range than whatever one you have assigned for Worldwide. If you're going station by station...well...good luck, because it's a mix of timeslots (the WCW syndicated shows aired in some areas in afternoons, mornings in others, graveyard shifts in still others). And going through old TV listings just to make things "accurate"...that way lies madness. Take it from someone who knows.
  6. Wouldn't it be a better solution to have the replacement and overall match grade reduce the unfulfilled prebooked penalty? So if you have a more popular worker take the place of the less popular worker who was pre-booked and advertised for the match, then the penalty would lessen because, hey, people got to see the more popular guy/gal. And doubly so if it's an overall good match. BTW, I think, but am not certain, that essentially this is what happens "behind the scenes" in the game (that is, that the game is taking this into account but that most players are not aware of it).
  7. Maybe tie in the increased amount of attendance for PPV events (or any type of event for that matter, whether on PPV or not - or not even aired, for that matter) over TV or "regular" events to the importance of the event (and perhaps the intent at that, but mostly the importance) more than currently offered in the game. So something like, say, a '90s era WWF/E "In Your House" PPV, which was of obviously lesser importance than other PPV events of the era and where the intent was essentially kinda throwaway compared to those other events (especially in comparison to Wrestlemania), would draw only slightly more than an episode of RAW if that and much less than a Mania event, whereas Mania would draw like, well, Wrestlemania. I'm sure that manipulation of settings in the database for events would allow for some of that now, but if the baseline is indeed 5x or something then, yeah, that should be potted down a bit by making it much more dependent on importance and intent than it is now.
  8. Like the mock ups. Honestly, I just wish the boxes where you input numbers manually were replaced by the sliders of old, or drop down menus. Or at the very least automatically placed the cursor at the end of the number when going through items using tab. I should specify here that going through such menus using keyboard control, not mouse point/click is my preferred method of control for such menu driven games. The best way to eliminate mouse clicking and go though options quickly for menus is keyboard control. Tab for cycling through items, arrow keys for using sliders to select whatever number is desired, and hitting the first character (letter or number) on drop down menus to quickly get to (or near) the option/choice wanted were quite convenient in previous TEWs. Now, with the more mouse-heavy input scheme, and input boxes where one has to manually input numbers, this has become a more click heavy game - which was the exact opposite of what was originally floated. And the editor makes this issue most glaringly obvious, because it is the most input heavy section of the game.
  9. Just want to mention some other promotion settings that stood out: JCP Jim Crockett Promotions actual founding year should be 1931. The earliest record I've seen of a JCP promoted event was in Dec. 1933. JCP should also have the following settings: No Outsiders Hotels are organized Cornette talks about that on his show, as do guys like Flair, Arn, etc. Also their broadcast quality should be "in house". Crockett had his own production truck (he was one of the early buyers in pro wrestling of something like that. Paid a million for it, iirc). His brother, Jackie Crockett, was one of the production crew. That said, the production values were...not so good. Definitely lower than WWF. Go semi-pro there. And merchandising was small time in '85 for JCP. They weren't focusing much on merch until '87 or so, iirc, with the Horseman t-shirts, vitamins, and the wrestling cups with some fast food chain or gas station chain. AWA Transport and hotels were organized. TBQH, Verne actually paid for some transport and lodging according to some guys (so too did Crockett and Vince for that matter), but it's probably best to handle those with contracts. Overall, Verne's company just organized the stuff. Also, I don't think Verne had a strict dress code, for the most part. I very much doubt guys like the Vachons and Dick the Bruiser were fond of wearing suits. Verne and Greg wore suits, as did some of the guys, but I don't think it was a strict rule or anything. In '85, merchandising was definitely a growing business for AWA. The Remco figures had just come out, so they had action figures before JCP/NWA did (actually, the first Ric Flair figure was in the AWA Remco line due to the whole Pro Wrestling USA deal). Verne also had an in-house production team (Polish Joe, etc.). Unfortunately, the production values were poorer than WWF. So I'd go semi-pro on that, but in-house for broadcast quality, same as JCP.
  10. Just checking in on this again, and sorry to learn about the recent issues. Hopefully you'll bounce back and we can all enjoy your further work on this mod. BTW: WWF didn't really have any drug tests prior to the arrest of Iron Sheik and Jim Duggan in '87 (I think it was either in May or June of that year). Duggan was hit with DUI and pot possession, and Sheik got hit with those and possession of cocaine. Vince fired them both mostly for the (relatively minor) bad publicity it caused (and maybe for breaking kayfabe, although even at that time Vince didn't care much for it). Then they implemented drug testing. But it was minor, and really only targeted to substances like coke and such, not steroids. Steroid testing didn't become a thing in WWF until Dr. Zahorian got busted and the feds came after Vince. Heck, the fact that Vince had Zahorian on the payroll, and the steroid trial documents point at Zahorian distributing 'roids makes it more likely that the settings for WWF in the '80s really should be: Drug Policy: None (change by mid '87) Backstage rules: No Smoking Dress Code Enforced Catering Provided Transport is Organized Hotels Organized Hotels Paid For Vince notoriously hates smoking. He fired guys (like Adrian Adonis) for dress code violations. Cornette mentioned Vince's idea of catering (that was provided at events) is unseasoned grilled chicken, plain rice, etc. Jerry Jarrett mentioned one of the things he did for Vince was cut the hotel costs.
  11. I'll preface this by stating that I was one of the more vociferous requesting a return to the pre-TEW 2016 TV show broadcast deal structure, where paying for the TV show and the revenue split thereof between the broadcaster and the promotion existed. And I'm glad that it's back, because that was a key part of the meta-game for historical mods set in the '80s, IMO. However, the way it's set up in 2020 creates unnecessary complications, likely ensuring that it's not often put to use in mods. In TEW 2013, both the cost and revenue splits were done via simple percentages (so, say "broadcaster pays for 100% of the show and takes in 100% of the revenue" or "the broadcaster and promotion split both the costs and revenues 50/50"). In 2020, though, only revenue split is handled via a simple percentage toggle; the cost split is broken down to two input options (one for "broadcaster pays", the other for "company pays") and a hard figure between 0 and 1000000, which, again, adds unnecessary complications to setting up deals for players, and setting up databases for modders. Can we get back to the 2013 method, wherein the cost split for TV shows is handled via percentage via drop down menu (as is the case with the revenue split)?
  12. As Jaysin stated, this was changed in TEW 2020 - that specific instance, btw, allowing for broadcasting on a PPV and a promotion-owned network IF the promotion is not owned by a media company. If it is...whomp whomp, unless the PPV broadcaster is also owned by the media company. Otherwise, the media company will strike down the potential deal with the PPV channel. This is obviously quite a problem. Especially for real world mods, whether set in the present, the past, or even an alternate "real world".
  13. This has bugged me since earlier versions of TEW: Clashing coverage being an issue that rears its head even for broadcasters of completely different types. I'll give the example that always rears its head with me: A promotion/company owned by a media group that owns, say, commercial broadcast and cable networks will block the wrestling company it owns from signing deals with PPV companies due to "clashing coverage". Well, yes, they all cover the same areas...but they're of completely different types. The media group in this case doesn't own a PPV network, so it shouldn't block me from signing events to be aired on PPV - yet it does. To give an example of how this is problematic: WCW in '89 was owned by Turner Broadcasting (this was prior to Time Warner snatching up Turner). Turner Broadcasting owned TBS, which was where the Saturday Night 6:05 show aired. In TEW, Turner will block WCW from getting shows on local syndication (local channels), because each of the local channels brings up the "clashing coverage" prompt as TBS is a national superstation. This would also occur if one wanted to sign a PPV deal as well. This is, obviously, a problem and not the least bit realistic, and moreover hurts growth potential for the wrestling company. To go back to WCW: Turner Broadcasting only really blocked WCW from airing on competing superstations (that is, commercial stations that aired in more than one region). They didn't block WCW from airing events on PPV providers (because, at the time, Turner Broadcasting didn't own a PPV provider). They didn't block WCW from airing on local channels/stations that only aired in one region (because those weren't really in competition with the nationally airing TBS). The way it works in TEW, a company like WCW in '89 can't grow to PPV. They can't sign with local channels. They can only work with Turner Broadcasting broadcasters, which (at the time) meant either TBS or TNT. Which is all fine and good...if one wants to ignore the PPV revenue potential, or the growth potential of having syndicated shows. A fix could be to only have the "clashing coverage" block prompt ONLY happen when trying to sign with a broadcaster of the exact same type. So having the Saturday night 6:05 show on TBS, a broadcaster which in game would be closest to "cable commercial", would not create "clashing coverage" when trying to sign a deal with a PPV broadcaster for showing events, nor would it create a "clash" when trying to sign a deal with a terrestrial commercial broadcaster showing in a single region like, I dunno, local channel 5 that only shows in Mid-South for one of the syndicated WCW shows of the time (Worldwide and/or Pro).
  14. <p>Great write-up. I like how you're seemingly not going with the usual major changes for WWF and instead showing how a smaller change leads to major changes for other promotions (CSP/WWC).</p><p> </p><p> I will state, though, that I sincerely doubt World Class would've given up that Dallas TV contract even in the event of a merger of sorts because "of the workload". The promoters at the time were very territorial, and very much not trusting of one another, so they would've tried their best to keep a strength just in case any "merged promotion" idea went bad (as it did with Pro Wrestling USA).</p><p> </p><p> Instead, I would change that to "due to the contractual obligations within the TBS deal, the KTVT contract (once a strong suit of the World Class promotion) had to be jettisoned as the TBS executives would not allow promotions airing shows on Superstation TBS to do the same for what they viewed as competing superstations". This does have some history to back it up, as TBS execs actually did put the kibosh on JCP airing any NWA Wrestling on WPIX (at that time a superstation out of NYC) for a while there for that very same reason, and the only way Crockett was able to get around it in '87 was that the show he had airing on PIX was branded as a UWF show despite it being a rebranded NWA Pro (Crockett had purchased UWF from Watts earlier in the year).</p><p> </p><p> Also, as something of an AWA fan: what're they up to in this mod? I know they have the deal with the Japanese splinter promotion, but what are they doing themselves at this time? They're not mentioned as part of the Pro Wrestling USA group.</p>

Maybe I want to create a mod that replicates this COVID era and place RAW / Smackdown in the Thunderdome.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> You're conflating two separate things I stated in my post and therefore arguing against something that I didn't actually argue.</p><p> </p><p> The "fixed venues for TV shows" was what has been requested numerous times, and that and only that is to what I referred in that second post.</p><p> </p><p> My first post (the one that mentioned the broadcasting deals) was answering the separate question of "why would a large promotion keep taping in a studio?" It didn't have anything to do with the possibility or method of Adam adding the "tie venue to TV show" request (which I assure you has been requested for quite some time in numerous topics on this board). Rather, I mentioned the broadcast deal thing as a way in which <em>the player</em> can mimic the reason why a promotion may choose to do it if, hopefully, fixed venues for TV shows are added (and only if they want to just for "story logic" sense).</p>
  16. And, additionally: this has been an often repeated request. I'm sure Adam knows by now that folks want it in. As to why it hasn't been adding in, and as to why it wasn't in to begin with is up to speculation and debate. I have a feeling it's either a technical issue, a cultural one, or a bit of both.
  17. <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="hailthebulldog" data-cite="hailthebulldog" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="51504" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>That would be a great idea. Honestly, I don't know if Crockett ever leaves the studios if Vince didn't start taping in arenas.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Well...he only left the studios for his syndicated shows. Yes, those were the more important shows at the time back then because although cable penetration in the South was decently good even in the '80s, in the areas of the country he wished to expand to like the Northern cities it wasn't something that really reached a good base until the '90s. So he needed the syndicated shows (NWA Pro and World Wide Wrestling) to be competitive, perception-wise, with WWF because those shows were casting a bit of a wider net.</p><p> </p><p> But the TBS shows? Those stayed in studio. Because that's what was contractually obligated by Turner. That's why Turner was so ready to dump Vince after the Black Saturday takeover. It wasn't really Southerners calling in and asking "where's my Gordon Solie rasslin'" so much as it was Vince trying to snake his way around doing an actual studio wrestling show. Even when Crockett expanded to other cities and grew from a what would, in older TEW games, be classified as a regional promotion to a cult promotion, he stuck with the TBS show taped at Techwood Studios. They had to abide by the contract, and I'm pretty sure that the contract with TBS paid them in some way.</p><p> </p><p> And, hell...WWE is taping at the Performance Center (and now the lol Thunderdome) because FOX contractually obligates them to put out something "live" each week COVID be damned. Same deal with WCW still holding tapings at Universal Studios Orlando well into the height of the nWo angle when they were the hottest thing in wrestling and could sell out arenas.</p><p> </p><p> And that's the answer to that other poster's question as to "why would a larger company continue to shoot in a small studio when they can fill larger arenas for TV?": because they may be under contract to do so, and if they negotiated that contract well enough they're probably paid in some way to provide that. A way to mimic this is the company being paid to run the show by the broadcaster. That's part of why bringing back that aspect of broadcast deals from 2013 was so important, IMHO.</p>

  19. Does your monitor/TV have the option to create a custom picture adjust setting? If so, create one for the game, and then it's just a matter of pressing the appropriate button on the remote to activate the setting when needed. Can you save an option on the set to have a setting just below the 300% recommendation to have nothing cut off from the TEW games but high enough so that they remain legible from the distance? Or...just do what I do: play the GDS games on a laptop (if you have one). The specs don't have to be high or anything, and while the database is loading you can do whatever on your PC hooked up to the Samsung set. And now that I mention that, while haven't tried it yet, I've always wanted to see how the GDS games play on something like a Surface.
  20. Well, I think you do lower your venue rental costs as you're only renting that venue once for those tapings. And it does allow you some leeway in case of things outside of your control in the future, like injuries or workers leaving the company or getting fired, as if you were to tape one episode week to week or go live then you don't have quite that type of buffer to react to those issues. Also, yeah...the realism thing as well. It isn't perfect, really, at least for historical mods (but then again that would mean contracts would have to pay workers less for TV show tapings than they would for events which is something that iirc Adam said would be too complicated to enact) but it does help with immersion.
  21. You could, yeah. Have to do some pretending there if you're OCD on the historical accuracy like me, though (hence the "USA Network wants actual exclusive matches" thing from my earlier post). It's a toss up with me. One save I might book Prime Time as a main show (or at least a secondary main) and others I might just book it the harder way (some new matches here and there, but focus on Heenan and Monsoon banter, comedy skits, and replayed footage as angles). Later on, shortly around the time when Turner took over (and definitely after), the TBS squashes went longer, yeah. But they were ultra short during the Dusty years, unless the persona of the worker was someone who liked dishing out slow punishment. So, say, Manny Fernandez and Rick Rude would just come out and demolish the poor jobbers in record time, but Arn and Ole would take their time demolishing the "competition". Jimmy Garvin would sashay his way to the ring, dance a bit, hit the brainbuster and get the win in a couple of minutes at most, but Ronnie Garvin would just torture the jobbers he faced until he hit them with the "Hands of Stone". Yep. Absolutely. Can't mimic things in exact fashion for a variety of reasons, but using a little bit of imagination has been the norm since the series started; 2020 allows the use of less in some cases, but we've still got to use it.
  22. Just as in real life (or what passes for it), you're going to be locked in that "build up stars, see them poached, build up stars, rinse, lather, repeat" cycle for a while. The length of time "stuck" there depends on what the starting finances are and which area you're in (I had an easier time growing IPW to regional than I did FREEDOM) and if you're product matches the trends found in the base area of the promotion. Looking things over, UEW matches the European market's desire for realism and pure wrestling, but not mainstream. That's an issue right there that you were able to overcome in a hotter market, but once the area's economy and market for wrestling plummeted that issue was bound to rear it's ugly head. And it looks like you hit a bad roll in terms of the random market crash. You either have to slog through it, weathering the aforementioned cycle until better days come around...or just start over and hope for a better bit of luck. Maybe if your early booking success raised your value, you can quit and get hired by another company. Or start your own.
  23. Another way to do it is to have the event tied to a specific brand, then before the event edit the roster so that the workers that you have in mind for the PPV are set to be under that brand for the night or set their brand affiliation to "none". You'll have to pretend they're in the brand tied to the show, yeah, but it's a workaround that'll ensure the workers from the third brand aren't irked that they've been left off of the show. And since you're only doing it for certain workers under the brand that you'll be pretending is also tied to the event, you won't have to swap everyone in that brand to the other for that night - just those specific workers. So it'll be easy to swap them back when you need to. Be sure, however, to also swap the brands for the championships as well. Otherwise they'll be left off the show and you won't be able to book those title matches. After the event, swap everyone back again.
