Dilemma

Ummmm. I have a dilemma. See, ever since I was little and i first started getting into wrestling, my absolute favorite wrestler was The Rock. He could "Do-It-All" and always entertained me. I wasn't even that upset when he chose to go off and start making movies. I understood. Now, here's my dilemma. I really enjoyed most of The Rock's comebacks and always cheered him on, but I hate to say, since coming to feud with Cena and now Punk, but The Rock's kinda lost his edge. His mike work is really good but not legendary like it use to be. He just seems really really watered down. Maybe it's the PG Era but The Rock isn't really worth the hype like he used to be. I'm conflicted on this. I don't know if I'm being to harsh since he was my childhood favorite or if I just need to accept that The Rock isn't The Rock anymore, but really just Dwayne Johnson.

His promos verge on Cena-esque at times IMO. His schtick is tired and I don't find him entertaining at all. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed his stuff.

I felt like he's been The Rock, more this time around... especially last night.

I go back and look at him from earlier... can do that so easily with youtube and others having so much out there. To me, he's not much different. I'm actually impressed by the way he keeps hyping CM Punk up... Punk not around, fun and games. Punk somewhere around, get serious time.

I'm being as objective as I can with him, and perhaps a little subjective... After all, who doesn't want him to come out and show these new guys up? The thing I've come to realize though, is that the past will always "Feel" much more entertaining then the here and now, no matter what star from the past, no matter who they get in the future, It will always feel like things were better "back in my day". The fact is, these guys today are better then we give them credit for, or (when you go back and watch) our heroes from yesterday aren't quite as great as we remembered them.... we put them on pedestals that they just can't live up to.

I was never the huge fan of The Rock (although I like most of his movies... can't think of one that I actually didn't like), but I always felt like he was the personification of charisma. Watching the crowds reaction every time he comes out, and how they react whenever anything physical happens, he still "Has It" for me. This is what I enjoyed most about him before. Perhaps easier for me to enjoy him, since I never put him on the pedestal most have. My era was the Hogan/Piper era, and my favorite wrestler was Snuka. Most of the guys I really enjoyed back in my era, sucked according to the people that grew up on the "Stone Cold" "Rock" era.... in almost every way. Makes people like me go back and watch all of them.

You know what I hate about looking back at everything? I hate looking at it all and thinking.... "The best thing about the attitude era was Vince McMahan." I hate saying that, because when I first joined these forums, there were quite a few people complaining that Vince inserted himself into too many storylines, revolved the show around him too much, etc. However, it makes it easy for me to see, now that he physically is unable to do that, why the step back to more of an 80's era type feel (PG Era).

The Rock still is cool. He's just got a great presence but he's not doing it night in and night out anymore. So his promos, while still entertaining, aren't connecting like they did in the late 90s because he's not doing it 5 times a week like he used to. I don't care what you do, whether you are a nurse, a writer, a comedian, a carpenter, whatever: you have to do it a lot to get really good at it. And to stay great at it, you gotta keep doing it a whole lot. Entertainment is obviously more fickle than those less abstract jobs, but you get my point.

Also wrestling fans are far more critical today than they were when Rock was peaking. The people paying to go to wrestling were just having more fun with the product in general. They complained less and were entertained more easily. The IWC was still young and not nearly as angry nor were they as jaded. In general, the people paying to go see Raw and tuning in on Monday Nights actually LIKED wrestling back then and "went with it" a lot more than people do today. Its an old argument but would the attitude era be as well received if it was all new today? These guys would still be great workers, but would their promos get the crazy crowd reactions they got in 1998? Every time there's a discussion on the Attitude Era I've been involved with -on this very thread and elsewhere- there's a good number of people who think that era was "overrated" or "not as good as we remember it" and all that stuff.

The public now has a far more adversarial relationship with the people they are entertained by. In wrestling and in general. It's just how it goes. Don't take this as "it's YOUR fault The Rock isn't good anymore". That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying The Rock's greatness was very much a product of it's time. His promos were never ingeniously conceived he just was super cool, said funny stuff, and we went it.

Another point I'd like to make is that he's not living up to "the hype" but really, who would?

Having watched the last two weeks, I'll say I've enjoyed The Rock in this day and age. Is it quite the same? No. But he's still entertaining, and often one of the best parts of the show when he's on the microphone.

I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking and new from him. I expect him to be the character he's famous for, and he delivers. I don't think I'm alone in saying I want to see The Rock feud with the current stars, not Dwayne Johnson's theoretical "new take" on The Rock. Sure, it's partially fueled by nostalgia, but at least The Rock is young enough that he still has more than that going for him.

Super random, but I love Otunga. He's a horrible wrestler, but I love his character so much.

In a perfect world, Otunga would be GM on either brand in 2013. I like everything about him that's not him being in wrestling matches.

And The Rock's recent appearances really sells the fact that WWE just can't write anyone as a likeable babyface. I don't expect every babyface to just be a high-fiving Kofi Kingston-type, but Rock, Sheamus, Cena, etc. have all been huge jerks whose actions are okay because they're done to people who the crowd are supposed to boo. Thank god for the Big Show being the top heel in the company, so that Sheamus could actually be the riled up underdog instead of the hilarious racist for a few months.

Seeing the Shield make Rock bleed was the best part of Raw. The blood might have been accidental but Rocky was selling it like he'd burst his stomach, and followed through on Twitter. He's also doing a good job putting Punk over, too. He's definitely still got IT.

And Ziggler entering the Rumble from the beginning. If he can stick around to the last 4 that would be a huge push. Anyone taking bets Ryback will beat Kane's elimination record? I think he'll come close before the Shield dump him over the rope. I'd like to see him and Show slam each other about at some point in the Rumble.

At this rate the Rumble is too prestigious. IMO it'd **** with the prestige if somebody like Heath Slater won the Rumble.

I would like to see more rising young guys win the Rumble. Guys like Ziggler, Kofi, Barrett, and Cesaro winning it as the foundation of a main event push would be great to see. However, I do understand that WWE needs to mix it up on occasion.

I loved that Sheamus won last year especially because most people thought Jericho would for sure win. Their final 2 sequence was the 2nd best ever only 2nd to Michaels and Undertaker in 2007 imo.

Brock vs Rock would suck. Triple H couldn't carry Brock to a good match, I doubt the Rock could and Trips has wrestled more than twice in the last 10 years...haha

If anyone ends the streak, I think Punk should though. I don't want it to end, but it would be a career defining moment for him.

I could see Punk vs Lesnar though, but that'd turn Punk face again.

Lesnar vs Punk is a storyline that writes itself though. Punk is someone whose life's passion is pro wrestling, Lesnar uses wrestling as a paycheck and doesn't hide that either.
