Both teams have distinct styles that made for an interesting in-ring story. Smart finish. I hope AOP put over War Machine before they hit the main roster. <strong>**** 1/4</strong></p><p> <strong>Dream vs Ohno</strong> - Good match but Dream struggled to hit at least 1 signature move on the bigger Ohno. Dream's entrance and gear were dope. <strong>*** 3/4</strong></p><p> <strong>Shayna vs Ember ©</strong> - Solid match. They worked the crowd well with the fake near-stoppage. The final sequence (although a went a bit long) was so tense I marked out for Ember winning. Playing up Shayna's lack of wrestling experience was smart. I was impressed by Ember's selling. <strong>*** 1/2</strong></p><p> <strong>Black vs Cole</strong> - Great Extreme Rules match. No technical masterclass but these guys damn near killed themselves. Adam Cole's best match by far. <strong>**** 1/2</strong></p><p> <strong>Gargano vs Almas ©</strong> - Insanely awesome match. My heart was pounding fast for the last 15 minutes. I'm glad they saved Ciampa for after the match as it would have been a disservice to Almas. Champions should be protected and the NXT bookers do it without making the challengers look weak. The bar has been set early this year. <strong>*****</strong></p><p> </p><p> <strong>Verdict:</strong> The matches were a strong mix of wrestling, character work and storytelling. The main event was an easy contender for MOTY. The crowd were hot as usual. There is no world where he should have been dominating AoP in MMA style grappling, especially right after they talked about Akham having an MMA background. Terrible story telling. I would have preferred seeing Fish in a handicap match. Fire O’Reilly and Adam Cole and replace them with Eddie Edwards and Roderick Strong. O'Reilly to me seems like the typical indie goober (looks-wise). Fish and even Cole look legit. But as the third wheel in the group I have no problem with him. I do wish heels in NXT were more consistent at getting heat (see The Rock's first promo back after he left the first time. Everybody was cheering him despite the content until he made sure they boo'd him). Cole's"Bay-bay" line would ve so much better if he was antagonizing the fans than when they sing along with him. A thousand workers have the same style with a better look and a better grasp of ring psychology. There’s literally nothing that Kyle has that makes him better than anyone else other than than roped in with Bobby Fish. Fish “gets it”. He does the little things like making sure he’s holding the tag rope before getting tagged in. Cole on the other hand doesn’t even really have a gimmick beyond stealing “Baybay” from Jericho who always yelled it. Plus he looks like a Shawn Michaels Funko Pop. I'm also curious to see how the women's match goes, though I'm cringing at the idea of an hourlong match with Stephanie McMahon commentary. Even bad Rumble matches are usually fun to watch, so I figure I'll get my $10 worth tonight.</p><p> </p><p> I'm LOLing at the people (not here but elsewhere) speculating that the ending of the most recent NJPW show means Kenny Omega might be a surprise entrant tonight. I don't know how you can say bad things about one of them without saying the same about all of them. For example you call O'Reilly a vanilla midget. Couldn't you say the same about Eddie Edwards or Roddy Strong? Same height, similar weaknesses. They are all very alike, they come from the same school of thought. You say Cole doesn't have a gimmick... but again, what about Strong and Edwards? What gimmicks do they have? If you think about it, just a bunch of guys actually have one. Anyway, I am just being curious. Although I myself am not a fan of any of them, I can respect their in-ring ability and try to treat them fairly. What a Rumble though!
