Yeah, he's held IC/US level titles, including WWE's current big gold belt, which is basically the IC title of 2013. And you're right, he wasn't the biggest star in TNA while he was there. Sting and Kurt Angle were there.

And he's been in great matches and he's still over, so that must prove he's got "star power"! Except, wait a minute, wasn't he always in Edge's shadow, despite being a better worker and a better talker? And which one main evented Wrestlemania again? Nowhere did I say Christian wasn't or isn't a talented worker. In fact, he's had to be a very good worker for his entire career, because his look was never all that great. But what I'm saying is, it's worse now. He's always been small and not particularly built- now he's old, too.

I agree with lazerbeak. Christian definitely lacks that "Holy Crap" aura. He's a 'star' in a certain sense, but he's never been in that top guy mould. There's never been anything particularly special about him. Really good wrestler, lacks the great physique or great promos or compelling character or genuine fire or sheer size that top guys tend to have.

I'd argue that he could make the case for great promos as a heel, but otherwise, yeah. And that's why he was in tag teams for what, 5 years before becoming a gatekeeper for up and comers. He's dependable but not flashy, and he's small and Canadian. That's not to hate on Christian at all- I thought he was great on ECW, and maybe he'd be great on a show like NXT, but yeah, he's about 40 years old, and he's had some injuries slow him down, and it shows.

Smackdown 7/26/13 Review:

Orton vs Sandow - The MITB winners squared off in a solid, even match. Cody provided the distraction for Orton to win. Cody stole Sandow's briefcase and thew it into the Gulf of Mexico. Sandow jumped in but couldn't swim to retrieve it.

CM Punk - Standard promo before giving the interrupting Fandango a GTS.

Barrett/PTP vs Henry/Usos - Fun tag match but needed another 5 minutes.

RVD vs Del Rio - Del Rio won this squash match by dodging RVD and using the referee. I hope this leads to something as it should have been a main event match.

Ziggler/AJ/Big E/Kaitlyn - Loved this segment. I hope we get a mixed tag match next week.

Wyatt's vs Tons of Funk - An effective squash match for the Wyatt's.

Christian vs Swagger - Good match but ended too quickly.

Verdict: I have no real complaints about any matches or segments, but they wasted too much time on replays. And without a strong main event match it was the weakest Smackdown in some time.

Fair enough i mean opinions are opinions... but I've always seen Edge as far more money on a mic than Christian. In ring? Different story.

On that mic though Edge is one of the company's best dudes and Christian was... ECW's main player for a couple of years...

I guess my mindset was Edge had a tendency to sound forced some of the time. Christian just seemed...natural.

They're both two of my all time favorites though. I originally supported Edge and then Edge got hurt every five minutes and Christian just...I don't know what to say, he just was consistently entertaining. I wish he had gotten his main event push in WWE in 2005.

Outside of the obvious time period, I always liked them both. I liked Edge more towards the end, I still like Christian, and I guess I'm going to say he doesn't really look so old to me... He just walks funny. But then again, he always did as far as I can remember.

As far as mic skill. I've thought "forced" on both of them, especially the "Peeps" thing with Christian. However, normal type heart type promo's, I like them both.

I've always thought Christian had the same potential as Edge, but I think I already said that earlier in the thread. I don't mean he could reach that status, but I do think he can fill the shoe's that Edge filled. He may never reach that popularity, but in my eyes, the difference isn't enough to really complain, nor really notice while it's happening. In other words, I think he can Main Event. I think giving him a world title is the right thing, and good for business. I think having him go up against the likes of CM Logan, Cena, Bryan, or whomever is a good idea. They can give him some room to talk, and take it to some of the same heights Edge and Cena went to, and what's great about it, is that it can be the secondary feud to whatever they have going on, but feel just as good as the main feud, perhaps at times being even bigger.

Just my thoughts on "old" Christian. What did Henry say? "I have a lot more left in the tank, I'm not going no where!"

RVD is a great new addition as well. I don't think I commented on that one yet. Of course all the other things, Wyatt family, Shield, etc. Just keep it going, can't wait for that red bearded dude from NxT to show up:).

EDIT: "Outside of the obvious time period" Kind of doesn't make any sense without the addition I forgot to put afterward. Outside of the obvious time period, I've felt they were totally unique characters, different from each other. The "Obvious" time period being when they were "brother" tag team partners, and were meant to be similar. Outside of that, as time went on afterward, they evolved into different characters, of which I am a fan of both.

In what universe is christian a better talker than edge?

The one where George W. Bush became president? Maybe you're just focusing on Edge's peak, and I'll admit he might have peaked higher than Christian, but when they were coming up together, Christian was the one doing the majority of the talking. And even after they broke up, it was Christian that was getting promo time during and after their feud.

Also, every WWF/E game that came out while they were both with the company tended to give Christian higher charisma (Smackdown vs Raw gave Christian an 8.5 and Edge a 7.5). Of course, back in the day, so did EWR. None of that means you can't think Edge wasn't always better, but pretty much every "rating" that anybody did had Christian as the better talker. But again, the point of saying he's the better talker is just to emphasize that despite all that, he wasn't the guy that WWF obviously wanted to be a big star. He never won the IC title in 1999, he never won King of the Ring, etc. But he was in good matches, so he must have great "star power."

I'll jump back in and say that I was a massive fan of Christian back in the day. I always felt more of a connection to him than Edge, in part because I always identify with the 'lesser' (in push at least) members of teams. Matt. Owen. Christian. I dug him. He's my kinda guy.

... but I definitely see why WWE pushed Edge over him. While not possessing an amazing physique, Edge had more height, and has almost this caveman-esque features with wild eyes and that hair. Christian was a bit shorter, bit less muscular, with weaselly eyes and lank-then-short hair. One looked like more of a star than the other.

The booking has obviously left its mark and coloured my view too. Edge was portrayed as a world-beater and a star. Since returning to WWE, Christian has been portrayed as an afterthought. Even his World title run came because Edge retired. It's a shame, because post-break-up, he was developing the most interesting character of the two.

Even comparing him to guys who aren't Edge... He has a lot of similarities to Jericho. Smaller Canadian who sorta flies but not really. Jericho's a better promo, has more fire in the ring, and evolved his character in recent years. Compared him to Jeff Hardy, who is better looking, has flashier moves of doom, and has a more interesting, distinct look. Christian's perhaps a better wrestler than all of them, but in character... not a guy for the cover of magazines.

I don't think there should even be a QUESTION on who the better overall worker is and who the better talker was. I never got into Edge outside of 2004/05 when he was feuding with Evolution and then did the heel turn thing. The Rated R Superstar gimmick was decent for a bit after his first title win.

Christian though was blowing it up before he left the WWE the first time. He was getting monster heel reactions, calling out Cena and thats when he started to really come into his own character.

Edge was pushed better because he had the better look and had the benefit of playing a serious character a lot quicker than Christian did. When they split they stuck Christian with the goofy silly stuff. The feud over the Stanley...er I mean King of the Ring cup. His Vitamin C stuff with Jericho.

Anyway Edge did peak higher but in my opinion and I would think the opinion of most wrestling fans Christian was overall better.

Well Edge is the better draw. Edge cut bigger promos leading to bigger matches than Christian ever did. Edge was the top heel in the company for awhile... headlined Wrestlemanias solo... etc. This is why I don't understand why anyone thinks Christian is a better talker. Edge talked himself into Wrestlemania main events. Edge drew more money with the stick. Edge is the better talker to me based ont he only tangible way to deterimine these things beyond raw opinion: money.

But it all depends on what snippet of history you are talking about. The "5 second pose" era... Christian was the one with the mic so I see where you'd get that. Coming up Edge didnt really talk much at all. But like... lots and lots of wrestling has happened since then so taking all that into account I go Edge myself. I dont even see it as debatable from my side which is why I took issue with the idea in the first place. But I guess I'm wrong by popular vote?

In terms of cutting serious, main event caliber promos I don't think Christian is even close to Edge. Yeah in 04 and 05 he was hilarious, but none of that work was going to sell PPVs.

You could say Christian has/had more charisma or was a better talker, but to me it didn't amount to better promos than Edge. That could be due in part to him never getting the big push in WWE and the time to do a serious promo, but even his stuff in TNA in the mid 00s seemed lacking as far as seriously selling PPVs. Entertaining no doubt, but not really making someone want to pay to see it.

I get the logic of arguing Edge cut the bigger promos, was the bigger draw, etc, but that's very much a 'chicken and egg' what came first argument in regards to his push. Tbh, I can't recall any memorable Edge promos off the top of my head (sans the 'live sex celebration' mess w/ Lita and Flair), which is odd given the push and focus he had post E&C. Outside of being able to do the wild eyes and a bit of hair pulling to convey intensity, I'd struggle to identify anything about an Edge promo that set it apart from the field. Solid certainly, but forgettable.

Okie, I'll make a serious post because I think this Christian/Edge discussion is VERY interesting.

I have always been a huge Christian fan. I am also an Edge fan. I always thought back when they were E&C that it was going to be the C that broke out as a singles star

When Edge first started his singles run to the main event, I didn't like it. He didn't seem to me like a major player. His intense promos were VERY forced. But once he won his 1st World title cashing in against Cena and the resulting feud that saw them go back and forth with the belt, I grew to respect Edge as a major star. Because he was. Edge obviously has a great look. He has the size. He did moves that got the crowd going and got them on the 'edge' of their seats.

Meanwhile Christian, despite his better in ring work rate and better quality promos, was doing much less important feuds like "The $1 Canadian Bet" with Jericho and Trish. They also gave him a really cringe worthy gimmick for a while when he would throw a toddler tantrum in the ring. These things aren't Christians fault. He worked the best he could with the storylines they gave him. And I enjoyed every bit of what he did (minus the tantrums).

Given the same push, either Edge or Christian always had the 'star power' and the charisma to be at the top. Edge was given the MitB and his victory catapulted him into the upper echelon of the WWE. Christian wasn't given that same opportunity until Edge retired. And by then, yes, Christian was older. Much older than Edge was when he was given the ball and told to run with it. Just imagine if Christian had been given the ball BEFORE he went to TNA. Yeah, it's a what if. But who can argue decisively that he wouldn't have made it.

His feud with Cena (and Jericho) that led to Vengeance 2005 was really the only window where I could have seen WWE really giving Christian the ball. The problem with this is that they were in the midst of making Cena their top guy and losing the belt to a guy like Christian at this time would have halted his momentum. Christian's always been at his best work as a taunting heel that would make fun of his opponents but I just never saw him becoming a huge draw for the company.

On the other hand, I see Edge's explosion in popularity as a product not of his in-ring work or his promos necessarily, but the context in which he became a huge star. Cena's feuds were somewhat running dry in early 2006. He had a good one with Jericho and a good one with Angle in 2005 after he was drafted to Raw, but when Edge came out of nowhere and cashed in the briefcase at New Year's Revolution, it clicked that he embodied the antithesis of what Cena was, as a character. And I think that because of this "Rated R" gimmick and the thing with Matt Hardy and Lita that happened fairly recently before that, Edge was catapulted because of Cena's kissing babies, The Marine babyface gimmick.

The reason Edge became a superstar and not Christian was pretty much just context and not 100% reliant on the skillsets of either guy. I wouldn't have been surprised if both (or neither) of them blew up as far as they did, but that's (imo) the reason Edge did and not Christian.

WWE tried like crazy to get Edge over for years. He won KOTR, feuded with Kurt Angle, teamed with Hogan, got hurt, came back feuding with Evolution, worked with guys like Randy Orton that the company was obviously high on. I mean he finally had that "breakout" moment at NYR, yes, but it's not as if it was an accident. WWE wanted Edge to be a top name much sooner than it happened, but injuries and Edge being a pretty lame babyface delayed him an extra few years. Then, unlike guys like Eddie or Jericho, who were moved back down the card after their initial main event push, Edge remained a top guy pretty much the rest of his career. I just don't see that happening with Christian- he was close during that Orton feud a few years ago, and now he seems to be pretty far from that point, having beaten Cody to win the IC belt last year, then disappearing for awhile. He wasn't given the same opportunities, as he spent the time post-breakup teaming with Lance Storm, then teaming with Chris Jericho, then being Trish Stratus's backup. He wasn't given a run with Hulk Hogan or a feud with Kurt Angle.

My point is that the biggest thing that separated the two was what could be called "star power," as Edge had a distinct look and was 6'4", while Christian just didn't have anything about him that jumped out to the "casual" fans.

Good point. Edge's rise was definitely a "right time right place" thing. But he also "grabbed the ball and ran with it" so to speak. Not to take anything away from Christian but you can't say Edge's stuff was bland and unmemorable then point to Christian like he was the second coming of Flair or anything. The guy's best work was rather generic heel/face stuff. Same as Edge maybe but Edge's generic heel promos saw him in 3 straight Wrestlemania title matches.

I should throw more cliches into this post.

Either way we can discuss opinions all day but in the end we just look at the money. Money doesn't care about your opinions it just gets made or doesn't lol. Edge drew way more money on the mic and I think that makes him better. Just my line of thinking but there's no accounting for taste. YOU can like christian's stuff all you want to. Saying things like "most wresting fans agree" is where I might poke holes in the logic. Only because you're taking this pulse and speaking for tons of fans that you've never spoken to lol. Whereas you can just look at the money drawn and compare. The money drawn says plenty of wrestling fans like Edge's work better than Christian's overall. I mean that's just looking at things objectively or at least as objectively as you can with something as weird as wrestling.

Everyone onboard with the Wyatt Family, even after they've gotten past the existing-only-in-vignettes stage?

Personally, I think it's great and am nervous they will drop the ball on it.

Well, to me it seems they have been given the ball, so it's all on them. Unless they all the sudden get no time to shine that is... However, if they are given the time, and run with the ball, there's no way WWE is going to drop it on their end, considering all the things they've been working on the last few years. If the ball drops, it will be on them is my prediction (this time... and presently). My opinion will obviously change if I see circumstances beyond their control take over and flop it for them.
