Though the fight was close, the judges were once again all over the place with their preferences. How in god's name do you award Gunnar the win after that? In terms of damage I just dont think he won round 4 but it's not like it's a clear round. I cant say he was robbed if he didn't clearly win it I'm super stoked for the January shows though. Spoiler alert Johnny Hendricks lost that fight and although I scored it 48-47 in his favor originally, after watching the fight again 49-46 Lawler is not so absurd. I don't know what is valued more in Mixed Martial Arts, the sheer amount of strikes landed or the percentage of strikes landed. Over the course of the fight, Lawler was more accurate, although Hendricks threw a hell of a lot more. I'm assuming a defended takedown is worth more than a takedown, at least with the sheer amount that Hendricks attempted, 5/17 is not a great ratio by any stretch. I would absolutely give first round to Lawler, as Hendricks just didn't do enough with that takedown that he finally got. Round two was more of the same in my opinion, although that's the round that could've gone 10-9 in either man's favor and I wouldn't have been bothered. Lawler landed some shots, Hendricks landed some shots and a takedown but Lawler stuffed some takedowns. Depending on what you value more in the sport, the round could've gone either way. Round three was obvious, Hendricks really turned it on in that round. Punches and leg kicks to light him up and overall control of the round throws that one in his favor, 10-9. If this weren't a title fight, at this point it could easily have been 29-28 to either man. Originally I scored it 29-28 Hendricks at this point, but looking back I'm leaning more towards Lawler being in the 29-28 position, but it really depends on what you value more. I think everyone who's watched the fight knows how the fourth & fifth rounds went. Hendricks really gave the judges a reason to take the belt away, if Lawler opened with punches just ten seconds earlier this would've been a completely different fight and he would've given the referee a reason to stop the fight. Same deal in the fifth round. More Spoiler At this point, I have it either 48-47 Lawler depending on how you look at that second round, or 49-46 Lawler. If anything Lawler got robbed of a Unanimous Decision by the one judge scoring it in Hendricks favor in my opinion. The telling factors were the 5/17 takedowns for Johnny Hendricks & the amount of strikes he allowed Lawler to land while they were on the ground. I don't think Hendricks got robbed at all. And again in the other round, he just si there taking leg kick after leg kick. So yes, you could blame the clinch work from Hendricks, but with a guy like Robbie, that's some thing to do. and to be fair. And i'm not the one who favors Wrestling over striking. Participants use the most effective fighting techniques to outpoint, knock out, or make their opponent quit. It's just sanctioned fighting. You can PM it to me also if you feel like it. Just watch all of it, and keep watching. The color commentators explain the action very well (well: Joe Rogan does at the very least). In short (and imo), it comes down to battles for position and feeling each other out. If you mean you don't get the schematics used to score points: don't bother, there are none. It's about as arbitrary as it gets (thankfully in WMMA4 now too =p). It's unclear what exactly scores points ('control' is such a loaded word...), and even more unclear what scores more points. If the fight is close, it's a coin-toss, as it is with several sports that are popular (like soccer). Weird how Rogan describes Faber as a very ethical fighter, yet he leaves his frickin' fingers way out. I like him, and the finish was a bummer, but take responsibility and apologize, even though it wasn't entirely your fault. Mario should open those eyes of his more. DaMegaFish Posted December 7, 2014 Share Posted December 7, 2014 The ground game and against the cage is where a lot of people get lost watching. I don't watch a lot of UFC, but I understand it. Don't get confused in to thinking its boring when it is slow, look for little positioning changes. It gets very interesting in my opinion. Maybe you can throw a couple punches while you have a guy against the cage and get him to loosen up just enough to take him to the ground. Same on the ground, maybe you are both in a somewhat neutral position, but a couple strikes to the side causes the fighter to shift slightly, opening up a chance for the striker to get a more advantageous position. The ground game and cage battles turn in to a lot of what one fighter is willing to take punishment wise before they will give up to another position. It looks slow, sure, but thats because you have to have a lot of caution because you let somebody take an strong position on you it might just be a couple solid shots before the fight is over. That said, a referee can interpret it as some sort of verbal tapout, so no mistake her. Just don't say anything if you want to remain in the fight.
