In any case, hasn't Josh Barnett adapted his catch wrestling to MMA? For what it's worth, it's better than having no wrestling at all.

Well yeah, but guys like Josh are the exception to the rule; it's more to do with guys like Josh, Sakuraba etc being exceptional fighters than it is about catch being good for MMA. It's like everything really, there are some things that work really well, and other that don't.

That's pretty cool. Who do you want to meet next?

You. Lol, I dunno really. There only person I've not met face to face that I really want to is Dana White. Spoken to him on the phone though. I meet fighters all the time...I'm not one of these starstruck people that goes running around getting pics and autographs of everyone I see...The Voice is someone I've spoken to a lot and really admire, so finally getting to hang with the guy at BAMMA was awesome.

That's a good point. But to be honest, it seems like you guys have tons of good strikers, but not so many good grapplers. And at the top level, there's a lot of grapplers. That's going to be serious problem for a lot of Briitsh fighters.

Heh. There's no way I'd get enough money to go all the way to the UK. Besides, after watching John Pinette's comedy routine, I'm not too sure about the food there. ;)

In any case, I would like to meet Mike Chiapetta and Ariel Helwani. I have some questions I want to ask them.

Couture's many wives and affairs, frequent financial misgivings with Zuffa where he purposely lied and scamming many of the Team Quest members, including Evan Tanner, out of their money puts him pretty firmly in the scumbag category. I don't really care about his persona or how he responds to journalists' questions, god knows that can get tiresome given the state of contemporary MMA media.

I'll be honest, Randy is one the fighters I respect the most for his accomplishments inside the cage. I've been a fan since he first came on the scene, his fights with Rizzo were some of my favs back in the day.

With that said, I hear a lot of very bad things about him from people who have worked with and around him. Lets just say that there are some rumours, and certain things that I know to be absolute fact, which if they became public knowledge then Couture would be begging Chael Sonnen to only have his problems.

By all accounts, he's a very naughty boy both in terms of his fighting career and his personal life. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise though; MMA fighters are cut from the same cloth as the rest of us, there will be some nice guys and some scumbags.

No one's perfect. Despite what "rumors" you heard I think it's slightly unreasonable to say Randy's got a checkered past when nothing's ever come out about any of it. Whereas Chael Sonnen broke the law on several occasions now.

Either way... my take on it is that their personal life is personal. MMA fighters are crazy dudes, man. You gotta be at least half a psycho to take that kind of punishment and train like that. Even the guys that do it at the amateur level, I really have alot of respect for them. So if I find out one's gone of the deep end a bit, I generally am not too shocked about it.

I'm never one to buy into rumours....that's not even the half of it. I'm talking about things I've seen with my own eyes at the XC facility, conversations I've had with the man himself and things I have been told off the record by people directly involved with the him.

There's no maybe about it, he does have a chequered past, even without the stuff that isn't common knowledge. Like Daff said, his numerous affairs, lies and shady business deals are all out there. He's a decent enough bloke and he's been kind enough to help me out with interviews etc...I've got all the respect in the world for him in some regards. Doesn't mean he's not a douchebag in other though :-p

Agreed. First couple of episodes dragged for me to the point that I've mostly fast-forwarded the series to the fights (which themselves haven't been great) this time around. They have picked up though and this week's (especially Charlie vs Zach) were decent.

Just a shame that the whole thing is capped off by the trailer park antics of a bunch of idiots who can't handle their drink. I know that drinkin' 'n' fightin' is a neccessarry part of the show for Spike TV's demographic...I guess I'd just love for MMA to hit that level where people would be interested to see 16 dedicated professional fighters take part in something like TUF, rather than the usual bunch of 3-4 decent guys and 12 TV-friendly wannabes. Probably make for very boring TV though.

Interesting fact: I've been told by a lot of guys who have been in the TUF house that one reason they don't always perform up to par is that their diet is affected in the house. They have a direct line to the producers to order food, drinks, supplements etc that they need. The general rule is that if you order booze, beer and hard liquor will be delivered within 20 mins regardless of it being day or night. Food, not so much. One guy told me that he had to make eleven calls and wait nearly three days for some chicken fillets, and numerous guys have told me that they basically have to ration food while waiting for deliveries.

On another note, Ariel Helwani's interview with Rampage is pretty funny. That man is bringing gonzo journalism to MMA.

Gonzo means getting involved and living what you're covering. As far as I know Helwani has never had a fight in his life, lol. I guess he does *nearly* get himself beaten up quite a lot though :-p I guess Aaron Tru would be my definition of a gonzo MMA journalist...outside of myself of course :-D

Oh I didn't mean in terms of fighting, just the way lately he himself seems to become the story in his interviews xD

As 130 nears I've realised that I have nothing else to do and the champion's league final beforehand meaning I'm going to be out and then almost certainly end up watching this live. Should be entertaining enough even without EM3.

Yeah, Saturday is gonna be a good night...we're all out for a mates birthday/champion's league final, then back to mine for a UFC afterparty. Unfortunatelly the quality I get when streaming the prelims on FB is appalling, despite be being able to stream full 1080p HD from other sites with no problems.

Ah well, the regular prelims and main card are good enough...and the one-hour earlier start time doesn't hurt! :-p

UFC 130 falls squarely into category of a UFC I will be recording and then skimming through most of it in the morning. I'm only interested in the Mir/Nelson fight with the rest of the card doing nothing for me.

As for TUF, Ferguson is a total douchebag and I really hope he taps like a bitch or gets knocked out cold.

Just saw on Sky Bet that Travis Browne is the favourite against Stefan Struve. Seems pretty crazy to me, Browne looked alright against Kongo but Struve has so much more experience already and keeps improving, he could get caught be he's survived a hell of a beating before.

Struve being an underdog against Browne is absolute nuts...there's no logical reason for it.

The main reason for things like this happening is that a lot of money was being placed on Browne as an underdog pick...that will sometimes swing the lines as the house looks limit potential losses. There's no way they're reducing it from an odds perspective....

...unless, of course, they know something we don't and Struve is hurt.

I think Couture's very admirable inside the cage, his career and skill trajectories have been nothing short of amazing in a sport where you supposedly peak in your low 30s. I don't even really mind that he's a scumbag, criminals and the fighting business go hand in hand. Stann is a stand-up fighter that needs to prove that he can handle people good on the ground, and Santiago needs to prove that actually deserves to be in the UFC. If Santiago wins, he definitely deserves a title shot somewhere along the line. On the other hand, UFC is pushing for a vet to be in line for a title shot, and it's either going to be Stann or Kennedy they will be pushing for.
