More promotion for WMMA3?

Recommended Posts

I could be wrong on this, but I don't see much 'hype' for the WMMA series.

What I mean by that, is I don't see a lot of reviews about it on game sites, I don't see a lot of chatter about the game in MMA communities, which is a real shame, given how great a game this is.

For example, when I found this game it wasn't because of some glowing review of it or from a message board talking about what a great game it was, it was just dumb luck I happened to stumble upon WMMA2 while looking for MMA simulators.

I think we all want Adam's game to succeed so we can all see WMMA4, 5, 6 and beyond become reality.

I'm just wondering, when the game drops, is there something more of us can do as a community to get the word out and help increase sales? I bet most all of you post on various MMA communities and while many MMA fans would not be intersted in a text simulator, you have to think that this game would appeal to a certain percent of MMA fans, many of whom might yet be untapped in terms of playing this game.

What if when the game came out people started threads about it on various message boards and also put something in their signatures to the effect of:

Ever thought you could do a better job running an MMA organization than Dana White or Scott Coker, well give it a shot in the ultimate MMA simulator, World of Mixed Martial Arts 3.

And of course, World of Mixed Martial Arts 3 would be a hotlink so people could come and download the game.

Honestly it would be great to grow this community, as I have no idea how many people play WMMA, but I know not a lot seem to be posting on the message boards regularly. I'd love to be able to come here and see a more active and posting community.

So I guess I'm proposing almost like an WMMA3 street team to help promote the game.

Thoughts? Would anybody else be on board to help with this?

I'll bump this thread again once the game drops.

I'll bump

I was planning on posting a WMMA3 thread on the Quartertothree forums since I'm a member there and it's one of the most popular gaming forums on the net. Definitely agree that these simulation games aren't getting the kind of exposure they deserve for as good (and addicting) as they are.

Definately something that needs to be done. I stumbled across WMMA2 when looking for a Boxing sim, after growing tired of wrestling games. I played the demo and fell in love... but despite regularly checking MMA websites, I'd never heard of WMMA 1 let alone the 2nd.

I've been chatting up about this game on a few sites already, GameFaqs being one. I was already thinking about bringing up this game on Sherdog as well, so ja. <img alt=":o" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/redface.png.900245280682ef18c5d82399a93c5827.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

<p>I've mentioned this and all the previous Adam Ryland games here and there, but these types of games in general (Football Manager is the exception, you crazy Brits) don't have a huge audience. A good example is Sports Interactive killing their excellent NHL EHM series after a couple of iterations because the market just wasn't there; there's still thousands of people playing the four year old version of the game because we certainly love it. It's just not mainstream enough for a big company to spend money on it, much less putting together a marketing budget to try to sell it to people that aren't interested.</p><p> </p><p>

But yeah, definitely spread the word. Every sale is a positive!</p>

Another issue that seems to be overlooked is that many consumers are instantly turned off by the 34.95 price-tag that's associated with the GreyDog games. A lot of people I've talked to on Sherdog really love the WMMA concept and loved the demo, however, and maybe rightfully so, a lot of people get baffled as to why you have to pay a little over half of what you would to purchase a console game for a text game.

are you kidding me^ do you know how to code a video game? do you the time and effort it takes? Im a graphic designer and I run into clients ocassionally that dont understand my pricing, and expect a lower fee. When someone provides a product the price you pay is what the provider determines their work , time and level of skill is worth. 34.95 is a reasonable price.

That's basically just saying "PC games should cost less than console games"... honestly, people expect to get a lot more for free now. With the massive increase in piracy and the number of people who can make games on the cheap, people forget real games cost money. Anyone can make a point and click game where you basically just need to get the timing right... but an extremely deep, long term strategy game like WMMA, TEW or other GDS games takes real skill, time and refinement to get to the level it's at.

Throwing darts at penguins (or whatever) is just a simple physics engine and a little level design, but there's no real depth to that. GDS games are full games that you can play for hundreds of hours without ever mastering... you know, proper games. The price tag is set far below those of other real games, but the amount of time people play GDS games vs the cost of the game, GDS games are incredible value for money.

And as an aside... SherDog forums.... *shudders*... I tried looking at them a few times, decided I'd rather learn things on my own than go anywhere near the place again. It doesn't surprise me that there's a vocal group of people there who'd fail to understand that paying for a good product is how you get good products. I don't know about Adam, but I kinda don't want a significant chunk of that crowd coming to the GDS forums, though I'm sure Adam's bank balance does. :p

I was a member of the 'original' Sherdog forums, going back over 10 years now I think. It used to be amazing - all the pro fighters posted there, giving training/conditioning/diet advice. I became friends with a few notable fighters through Sherdog (this was waaay before I was working in the industry) and some of those friendships still hold up today. There were tons of 'insiders' - managers, people who worked/trained with pro fighters or inside promotions themselves. You'd often hear about the latest fights from there before they were announced.

As the sport got bigger, the allotted quota of idiots arrived. Fighters were bashed and abused by kids and keyboard warriors, everyone had a blackbelt in 5 martial arts and was 'starting UFC training next year'. It became unbearable. Hardly any pro fighters post there now. I don't think I've logged in for a year. I'd advise anyone actually wanting to learn or get into the MMA community to stay well away :)

Ahh, the good old days though...Jeff Sherwood, the owner of SherDog, is good friends with Tank Abbott. He used to invite Tank over when he was drunk and get him on the forums replying to fans questions. It was always comedy gold.

On topic - I genuinely can name only one or two console games I've bought in the past couple of years that I would consider equal 'value for money' to the WMMA series. I'd even put TEW on there as well, I'm not a hardcore wrestling fan by any means but I had a go at TEW10 and spent more time on it than most Xbox games I had at the same time. $35 is a steal.

My first experience of the Sherdog forums was when I posted that WMMA was coming out. Literally the only information that had been revealed anywhere at that point was that it was called World Of Mixed Martial Arts and that it was a PC game. Nothing about the price, the content, the format, etc.

I think it took two replies before someone posted "that sounds terrible, I'm definitely not interested". To this day I'm not sure which of the two pieces of information put him off; that it was on a PC or that it had a pretty standard and descriptive name.

Fun Fact: WMMA1 was originally going to have an auto-generated parody of the Sherdog forums, where every thread contained nothing but the most inane, dribbling, quasi-literate, knuckle-dragging, intellectually stunted, retarded replies that I could come up with.

But other than that, great place to visit.

Anybody who thinks $34.95 is too much to pay for one of these games needs to give their head a good shake.

WMMA 2 has been out for around 85 weeks so lets say you play it for an average of 1 hour a week you are paying less than 50 cents per hour of entertainment. On the other hand I usually am able to beat $70 console games within a week and then I never look at them again.

Some of the stuff I have seen on The Sherdog forums is astounding.

If you go into any thread, and I mean ANY thread there you will see by the third post somebody calling someone either a "nuthugger", "fanboy" or any other derogatory term they can think of, and from there on out everybody just goes to town.

I think I made one post on the forums in response to the question "what fight would you like to see Anderson Silva do next?" I responded saying that I didn't want to see him go against Sonnen (at least not immediately) and that I would like to see him fight Vitor Belfort. Apparently that was not an acceptable response to the MMA fascists and I was blasted by about ten people who said I was dumb and knew nothing about MMA. Seeing this I realised that it was futile trying to have an opinion on those boards and promptly left for good.

WMMA1 DID have that feature that listed a bunch of "threads" on the BlurCat forums, usually being misspelled, inane or just plain stupid.

This was perhaps the feature I missed the most in WMMA2 - it was completely hilarious to anyone familiar with the cesspool that is Sherdog, especially when I could link the writing style of some of your fake Blurcat topics to individual Sherdog posters!

Wish BlurCat forums had made it into WMMA2 and onwards.

Adam has repeated a few times that the dev diary didn't contain every feature of WMMA3 so maybe it'll still happenn....

I did post about the Dev diary starting over the underground forums (in the gamerground forum) and it actually was received quite well. Adam/GreyDog should seriously think about giving a copy of the game to MMA Torch and The Underground so they can run a news story on the game, not only will Internet peeps see it but both news sites have an iPhone news app.

On a side note, I'd seriously be tempted to buy an iPad if WMMA worked on that.

Since WMMA 2 came out I now write for a sizeable MMA website/blog (as well as Sherdog every now and then, but that's neither here or there), it's however entirely in Polish. I'm a big fan of WMMA series and when I number three comes out I am definitely a buyer and will, most likely, write a review of the game for MMARocks.pl . Now, Poles are stingy with their money so I don't know if it will drive masses to purchase a copy but I'll help out a bit with promoting this fine piece of code.
