C12 - Cornellverse Update

Recommended Posts

DISCLAIMER! - Just to be clear, I've been doing preliminary work on this for the last few weeks. When the Cornellverse 2015 thread popped up I considered scrapping my project entirely, but instead decided I'd just limit my exposure to that thread to ensure that the two data sets develop independently of one another and provide game worlds as divergent from one another as possible. I wish the Cornellverse 2015 dudes the best of luck, and this mod is presented as a community alternative, not any sort of challenge to the no doubt awesome ideas being tossed around.

It is January 1, 2012. The world changed. This is how it happened.

1. Dan Stone is dead.

2. So is NOTBPW.

3. TRH is the new promotion for Canadian smarks to get excited about.

4. PSW and NYCW have begun a new era of cooperation, by which I mean they've spent the last year and a half beating the crap out of each other month after month.

Explanation

Most veteran players of TEW 2010 can point to NOTBPW as a major weak point in the default data set. It's so good at cranking out A-rated shows and matches that it just sort of dominates end-of-year awards and relegates CGC to also-ran status. After trying a number of tweaks to try and fix the promotion, I eventually decided that, heavy-handed though it might be, the best solution was to remove the company from the database. I hope I've done that in a way that makes sense.

TRH was created out of the knowledge that while NOTBPW ruins the high-end game for a lot of people, there's still a desire to play a performance-heavy Canadian promotion. I've run simulations in which an AI card for TRH has pulled a B- in the first month, so it's still ridiculously good for a Small promotion, but by sticking it in The Maritimes it'll take a while for the promotion to advance, and the AI is usually too dumb to figure out how to pull off a successful move up to and out of Cult. TRH is going to be a big regional power, but it will take human initiative to get TRH to turn national.

Story Of 2010: Death of NOTBPW

Original Publication Date: January 5, 2011

In a way, everyone knew that this article was coming. No single story has had a greater impact on the wrestling industry on an international scale quite like the March 6 2010 death of Dan Stone, and the only question among our staff was what would be the best way we could approach this story that would be tasteful to the deceased, respectful to those who were wrong, vicious to those who deserve it, and informative to those reading it. In the end, we concluded that a good look at the dramatis personae, their involvement, and where they ended up would be the best way to look at the aftermath of this great man's death and the mess that was made of his legacy. Presented, for your critique, is the story of one man and the family business that died with him.

The Death of Dan Stone

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/DanStone.jpg

As has been reported by dozens of other sources, on March 6, Dan Stone attended the Hall of Immortals induction ceremony for Dread, talked to some friends, had a few drinks with his sons Dan Jr and Jeremy, and then retired to bed shortly after midnight. He never woke up. An autopsy showed that Stone suffered a heart attack in his sleep, and it is likely that he did not suffer. The funeral was attended by hundreds of industry professionals, many of whom had never even met Stone, but still wished to pay their respects. The episode of NOTBPW Championship Wrestling which followed Dan Stone's death was done with the utmost of class. Taped interviews from many of Stone's colleagues and friends, as well as sons Duane and Edd, were aired in between clips of classic Dan Stone matches. The "main event" was an hour-long empty arena match between Dan Stone Jr. and Jeremy Stone, after which the two embraced and passed a microphone back and forth, sharing a few words about their departed father.

The next day, everything went to hell.

For all of his efforts to be a good businessman and a responsible father, Dan Stone had never drawn up a will. The fate of the Stone estate, and NOTBPW with it, was in question.

The Family Feud

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/JeremyStone.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/DanStoneJr.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/VictoriaStone.jpg

"They turned into animals," said one source who was backstage when the events took place. "I don't know which of them was the worst. Jeremy started going on about his 'birthright,' like he was some sort of feudal ****ing lord. Victoria claimed to be playing peacemaker, but she was triple-checking each show's card to make sure no one was changing her booking decisions at the last second. And Danny would just explode at the worst times. He ran a dark match in April against Flash Savage where he almost broke the kid's ankle in the middle of the ring for botching a spot. He apologized like crazy after the fact, but Danny was just so angry all the time there was no way he was mentally fit to be working matches." Arguments began spilling over into the locker room before, after, and even during live tapings. "Edd came up from Los Angeles one weekend to try and talk things over with Danny, Jeremy and Victoria. Victoria flat-out refused to see him, and Danny just took him to a bar and they didn't leave until the sun came up. The next morning, Edd took a plane back to LA. Duane pleaded with them over the phone to calm down and let things go, said the company wasn't what should be important to any of them and he'd give up his share if it'd make things right, but neither Victoria nor Jeremy would listen to any of it. Danny seemed to really take it in, but one night after a show he said he'd already thrown in against Victoria and Jeremy, and now that he'd committed he had to see how it played out."

Stuck In The Middle

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/DuaneStone_alt1.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/EddStone.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/SeanMcFly.jpg

A TCW wrestler who spoke to the site under condition of anonymity said that it was around this time that Edd Stone experienced a remarkable change. "I think it really bothered Edd that he never got a chance to patch things up with his father. I wouldn't say that he became more serious, I mean, he's Edd, but there was a definite shift in his behavior. He became less about the partying, started going to bed at a more reasonable hour. He really got into the workmanship side of wrestling, and started watching a ton of old matches, especially his dad's." By the end of the year, the newly motivated Edd Stone would go on to win dual championship glory as both TCW All Action and TCW International champion.

Duane Stone didn't have the same luck. Duane in particular seemed sluggish and confused in the months following his father's death, and BHOTWG management offered him a chance to take time off on the following tour with a promise that his spot would be waiting until his return. As of this writing, it has been six months since Dwayne's last BHOTWG appearance, and in that time he has avoided public appearances.

Sean McFly, on the other hand, found himself stuck in a very precarious political position. Stuck between his wife and two of her siblings in the company's political struggle at the same time that his contract with the company was up for renewal, McFly actually wrestled for three weeks without a contract before making the fateful decision to announce that he was declaring himself a free agent. If the Stones patched up their family drama and committed to signing a contract, he would be happy to continue working for the company, but as thing stood, he couldn't bear to watch his second family tear itself apart and was certainly not comfortable taking money for the privilege. McFly's decision proved to be the correct one.

Time Of Death: June 3, 2010

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/NOTBPW.jpg

Less than three months after Dan Stone's death, North Of The Border Pro Wrestling held its last show. Feuds went unresolved, the main event was a faintly disappointing Steve DeColt/Harrison Hash NOTBPW Canadian Championship defense, and Steve DeColt, of all people, was the last man to hold the crown jewel in "The House That Stone Built." Rather than engage in a lengthy legal battle, the decision was made to evenly split the promotion's assets among the five Stone siblings, with an exception made for the estate's trademarks, which would be placed along with the estate in a shared account with a small legal defense fund. The company that for so long seemed poised to dominate Canadian wrestling for the next century died with little more than a whimper.

The Aftermath

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/TRH.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/EmmanuelLutz.jpg

Emmanuel Lutz again saw his name pop up on wrestling sites in 2010 when he announced the founding of Truth Respect Honor Wrestling, an old school-style wrestling promotion which sought to continue many of the same traditions as NOTBPW. "This isn't a cash-in product sold for nostalgia value," Lutz said. "As anyone familiar with my career in Parliament can tell you, wrestling has been a passion of mine for as long as I've lived. With NOTBPW gone, now I've got to pay out of pocket to watch the kind of show that I like to see." TRH's roster certainly owes a lot to NOTBPW, as can be seen in the company's first TRH World Heavyweight champion: Omar Brown.

The Future

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/SteveDecolt.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/CPW.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/JeremyStone.jpg

While Truth Respect Honor Wrestling claims not to be a cash-in on NOTBPW's closing, it's hard to see Steve DeColt's announcement of Canadian Pro Wrestling as anything but. The promotion, scheduled to open this summer, has already been the source of a lot of controversy, as Jeremy Stone was at one point rumored to be a member of the roster, then merely an investor, then neither, and now both. CPW promises that it will launch at a national level, feature "a variety of big-name stars familiar to longtime wrestling fans," and a glitzy, big budget "sports entertainment" look that promises to give SWF a run for its money. At present the pool of listed investors looks too small for any of this to be true, but if DeColt can pull it off then it's hard to see how the rest of the DeColt family could see this as anything but a declaration of war and how NOTBPW fans could take it as anything but a grave offense. Before taking any of this too seriously, remember that another rumor has Blue Mackenzie, Canada's favorite improv comedian, attached to the promotion as well.

Next: TRH!

As if it wasn't already obvious, Edd Stone = The Best One. You found a good motivation for him to get (a little) more serious too. "Realizing his family were right" always got my goat. Guilt, however? That works.

Note to Self: Take Duane render and add 30lbs.

Truth Respect Honor Wrestling

Where it came from, where it's going, and why it's the best in Canadian wrestling today

By Adam Reso

Original Publication Date: December 17, 2011

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/EmmanuelLutz.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/TRH.jpg

Anyone who kept up with the Canadian Parliament's crusade against television violence back in the early nineties would be familiar with the name Emmanuel Lutz. Rather than hopping on the bandwagon, Lutz was one of the most vocal MPs to oppose the overly restrictive regulations. More than that, he was a lifelong wrestling fan, and personally spearheaded the legislation which exempted professional wrestling from the ban on the basis that it was "Uniquely Canadian performance art with a tradition stretching back more than a hundred years, and, when watched with a responsible adult, no more harmful to a child than an American football game." This act endeared Lutz to the wrestling community, which was likely in some way responsible for the additional two terms he served before retiring to the private sector. It also endeared Lutz to Dan Stone, who honored Lutz's retirement from government service with a segment on NOTBPW Championship Wrestling in which he was brought into the middle of the ring by Stone and awarded the title of "NOTBPW's Number One Fan."

Emmanuel Lutz is so big a wrestling fan that when NOTBPW went under, he scrambled to fill the void left by the promotion's absence and provide a similar promotion which could also serve as an alternative to the glitz of Canadian Golden Combat. To this end, he created Truth Respect Honor Wrestling, a company run in the old school style with long matches and more emphasis placed on a wrestler's ability than on how many t-shirts his name sells.

As big a fan of NOTBPW as Lutz might have been, though, he didn't want to create a carbon copy of that old company, and there are some substantial differences between NOTBPW and TRH. For one, there is a greater emphasis on mat-based wrestling than was seen in NOTBPW. This isn't to say that the company is short on brawlers and high-flyers, but the further you go up the card, you'll notice more and more members have an amateur background. Another change is in presentation. The show is cut together and filmed in a way similar to sports broadcasts. It's hard to notice at first, but it comes through in the little things, mostly lighting and placement of the camera crews. Third, the show actually places more emphasis on the non-wrestling aspects than NOTBPW ever did. "We're not CGC and we're not SWF, and we're not trying to be either of those things," Lutz said in an interview with wrestlecircle.com last year. "I just believe that we need the fans to know the wrestlers a little more if we expect them to care about what happens in the ring." Rather than engaging in sports entertainment hijinks, these non-wrestling segments usually take the form of backstage interviews or pre-taped vignettes. Those vignettes are shown at live shows by means of a projector and a theater-style screen. While it's no Supreme-Tron, it gets the job done and gives the show a big league feel that many independent promotions lack.

In short, Truth Respect Honor Wrestling has had a year and a half to impress me, and it's done so at each show I've seen. What's more, head booker/indy darling Steve Flash seems to know exactly how to get the most out of every member of his roster. Alan Parent is an excellent example. A relatively okay submission wrestler without a lot of depth, it was Parent who Flash decided to program himself against in the promotion's opening months. In an interview, Flash said "I looked at Al and saw a guy who really loved Haruki Kudo, so he threw a lot of Kudo spots into his matches without much understanding of why they made Kudo so popular. I just came off a year-long feud against Al, and now he knows how to put together a match, how to have a good match against anyone on the roster. All he needed was someone to show him how to tell a story."

I'll leave you with a quick summary of the TRH roster. Frankly, the roster speaks for itself.

Alan Parent

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/AlanParent.jpg

In his eighteen months on the roster, Alan Parent has undergone a transformation. Notorious on the independent scene as a one-dimensional grappler, Parent is now a dangerous threat to the upper card with some great heel mannerisms in his repertoire.

C.H. Threepwood

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/CHThreepwood.jpg

Threepwood continues his tag team with Crockett Tubbs in TRH. The two currently hold the TRH Tag Team titles, and are just as consistently good as they were in NOTBPW.

Calvin Dark

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/CalvinDark.jpg

Calvin Dark might be the weakest member of the roster, but even he has found a spot as a reliable opening match guy. I wouldn't expect him turn into a big star, but I wouldn't be surprised if he spent the last couple of years of his career as a job guy in a bigger promotion.

Canadian Assassin

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/CanadianAssassin.jpg

Canadian Assassin is a personal favorite of Emmanuel Lutz from the Canadian micro-indy scene, and it's easy to see why. This guy is a super-competent worker all around, and I would bet money that he's going to be main eventing somewhere in North America within the next few years. The biggest surprise is that his whole gimmick comes from the fact that he was trained by "Assassin #2" Ernie Turner, an unlikely star maker if ever there was one.

Crockett Tubbs

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/CrockettTubbs.jpg

Crockett Tubbs is a guy you've seen in NOTBPW with C.H. Threepwood, and you'll see them together again in TRH. These two are so consistent that you'd almost think no one told them NOTBPW closed.

Devyn Reynaud

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/DevynReynaud.jpg

The most recent graduate of the House of Stone, Devyn Reynaud has worked the opening match of the last two shows of the year. Personally, I think the guy shows a lot of promise, but he might find himself anchored to the bottom of the card because he's just that fantastic as a bump guy.

Frankie Dee

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/FrankieDee.jpg

I'll admit up front that I've always thought that Frankie Dee's gimmick was pretty dumb. The whole "honorable warrior schtick has been done before, better, and his "tribal tattoos" look like he's drawn on himself with a marker. Fortunately, the TRH booking team has chosen to downplay that side of his character, and instead present him as a competent worker whose style is almost that of a Japanese super junior.

Gentleman Jim King

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/GentlemanJimKing.jpg

Gentleman Jim King is a worker who's really benefited from the move to Truth Respect Honor Wrestling. The greater emphasis on interviews and vignettes has really allowed King to play up the snobbishness of his character, and it's that strong character that has made him such an obvious choice to push to the main event. While the Gentleman hasn't yet won himself the TRH World Heavyweight title, he has been one of champion Harrison Hash's most persistent and dangerous foes.

Harrison Hash

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/HarrisonHash.jpg

I'm pretty much convinced at this point that Harrison Hash is some sort of god of wrestling. The guy has been all over the Canadian scene, toured Japan, got over with the completely absurd Panda Mask gimmick, and now is champion of the most smark-friendly promotion in Canada (sorry, 4C). He's just as good as he's always been, only now he's at the top of the card.

Nigel Svensson

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/NigelSvensson.jpg

I'm not very familiar with European wrestling, so I had to do a little homework when it came time to write about Nigel Svensson. He started out on the Swedish indy scene, and from there got work with UK promotion Ring of Fire. He put on a couple of really strong performances in their undercard, which I absolutely recommend watching, and then got dropped from the ROF roster in early 2010 when they started having trouble paying their bills. Fortunately, Steve Flash is a fan of British wrestling, and when he found out Svensson was out of work he signed him to the TRH roster. Svensson has a pretty good tag team going with Ricky Turner, under the name Svensson-Turner Overdrive. They're managed by the German Heidi Hohenzollern, who I have decided I will one day marry.

Omar Brown

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/OmarBrown.jpg

One of the baddest men on the planet, Omar Brown was signed to the initial TRH roster so that he could continue suplexing the hell out of everybody. Brown was the first TRH World Heavyweight champion, and he's just as impressive and terrifying as he always has been.

Ricky Turner

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/RickyTurner.jpg

You guys might better remember him as MAW's Ricky Douglas, back when he was Steven Parker's tag team partner. Unfortunately, Ricky Turner has continued his tradition of being in tag teams with people who are more impressive than he is in pretty much every way. He's not a bad wrestler by any stretch, but I don't see how Turner can build up much steam when he's in the same ring as Nigel Svensson every show.

Rockin' Ryan Turner

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/RockinRyanTurner.jpg

The other, completely unrelated Turner, Rockin' Ryan Turner is another MAW alum. He and Stan "The Man" Manna continue to team as The Rock City Stars, and continue to be a pretty okay cruiserweight team who mostly get by on their gimmick.

Stan "The Man" Manna

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/StanManna.jpg

Stan "The Man" Manna is the other half of The Rock City Stars, and he's just as pretty okay as he was when he was in MAW. It's disappointing that these two didn't learn much from their years touring the Canadian indy scene, but it's kind of nice in a nostalgic way to see them teaming up again in another exciting, rising promotion.

Steve Flash

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/SteveFlash.jpg

I love Steve Flash. You love Steve Flash. Every indy-show-watching, dirt-sheet-reading smark loves Steve Flash. I don't really know what to say about him that hasn't been said a thousand times before, but one important thing to note is that Steve Flash is not often in the main event of a TRH show, and has yet to be TRH champion. I wish more booker/wrestlers could take a cue from him.

Will Kane

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/shamelessposer/C12%20Hype/WillKane.jpg

I'll say this right now: Will Kane is probably in the wrong promotion. A loudmouthed British punk who only shuts up long enough to talk with his fists, Will Kane reminds me so much of Rory McCallum that I just cannot imagine a situation in which it's a good career move to be working for a company based so much around in-ring work. That might be unfair, as he's still a fine enough brawler to hang with the best of them, but I can't imagine that CGC and SWF aren't already watching this guy and trying to work him into their plans for the next few years.

Something to freshen up the CV like someone did last year is great. Looking forward to this :)

That was me (One Year Later) and it didn't really resonate all that well with most people, but I probably have only myself to blame because I got so burnt out with the creation of the mod that I didn't really have any energy left to promote it or deliver updates and fixes like I had originally planned.

I would join the Anti-NOTBPW fanclub, btw. I killed them off in my mod, too. There's just nothing to like about that promotion ;)

I'm really looking forward to playing this! The original 2010 CVerse is just played out and the more updates we can have for it, the better. All available thumbs up, shamelessposer!

Alan Parent as a major player in a company? Finally! Such an underused rookie who is fairly popular for the Indy's right off the bat in 2010 for some reason.

I like the ONY later mod personally. My only problem was it seemed everything happened to fast to be believable. A company going from pretty well to gone in a year is hard to just accept. If the game was a few years later like the 2015 Mod. I could easily buy it. Granted, two years isn't a long time either. However, Stone Sr. was still alive in OYL while he is dead in this mod. The company dieing with him makes a lot of sense. In any case, this is a different mod and a different thread, so I might as well not throw off the topic. Can't wait for more updates on the mod shamelessposer.

I was interested in this until the killing of NOTBPW happened, I don't know why everyone seems to hate NOTBPW, I will say this I hate them but only when I am not playing as them but they are my favoriote company in the game.

If that is why you guys hate NOTBPW (playing against them) then I guess I can understand it but unfortunately without NOTBPW I will not try this mod.

Wait a second. Did you just say that you were interested in this mod until I killed off NOTBPW? I killed off NOTBPW in a post that went live thirty seconds after the OP. I can't imagine the whirlwind of emotions you must have experienced about the same time the forum software told me "You must wait 13 seconds to make another post."

If you're really willing to ignore what I assure you is going to be a pretty awesome mod because a single promotion didn't make the cut, I'm not sure what to tell you.

I thought I would clear this up as you seem to be misunderstanding me and its partly my fault for not explaining myself enough in my first post. I saw the thread title and was interested but once I opened the thread and started reading about it I became less interested because of the lack of NOTBPW. I still might try it though because one of the newer canadian promotions might be good but I prefer the origional C-Verse over anything even if it is almost two years old.

I'm going to be without a reliable internet connection from now until the new year. Work will be done on the mod between now and then, and I'll try to post a couple of updates, but I don't know how available I'll be. In the mean time, just know that this project is NOT dead.

In other news, I see that the guy who's been giving a one star rating to every thread I've started for the last two to three years has finally discovered the C12 hype thread. Missed you, buddy!

Don't fear! I'm still working on the mod, but progress has been slowed due to some convention obligations and my recent purchase of The Old Republic. I give you guys many apologies and an assurance that despite all appearances, work is being done, but my last few days worth of work have mostly amounted to shifting workers around and it's left most of my current work in a half-finished state that can't be easily presented in a forum post.
