I'm looking forward to the Jay White match. Their match at Wrestle Kingdom was my favourite of the night so this one should be even better now there's more to fight for, and White has coming along quite nicely in the last 9 months, he definitely feels more settled into his persona.

Wow, really? I thought their WK match was pretty underwhelming. I do agree that Jay has been developing nicely throughout the year though. He's really settling into the Switchblade character, and I think he'll be the next first time IWGP champion. (That's probably still at least two years off, but I don't see any other fresh blood winning the title before that. Maybe Ibushi, but it doesn't seem like they're ever going to go all the way with him.)

But even tho I am not a real big fan of Tanahashi, I'd much rather see him wrestle Omega, since if I recall they haven't had a singles match at all?

Please correct me if I am wrong, I know they were suppose to battle in ome sort of ladder match for the IC belt last year, but Tanahashi was injured.

They did have one singles match before that ladder match. After Nakamura left, Omega beat Tanahashi to win the vacant IC title. That was in February 2016 I believe, and it was Omega's first big singles match as a heavyweight, so it's almost ancient history compared to where Kenny is at now.

One good thing is that there's going to be serious drama in that Okada vs. Tanahashi match. Usually the briefcase defenses don't have that because there's not much doubt about the outcome, but there's a legitimate chance that Okada could win and set up another match with Omega. I don't expect it, but it is a real possibility.

I'm watching the pre-show on WGN right now, but won't be watching the show itself live. I think it's like $40, which is hard for me to justify spending on a single show in modern times when I pay under $10 a month for NJPW World. I do kind of want to watch it live because it feels like a special atmosphere, but apparently it'll be up on NJPW World shortly afterwards.

All In is a contender for best PPV of the year. Aside from the technical glitches in the pre-show the production quality was great and had possibly the best announce team of the decade. Being the Elite did a good job of hyping some of the matches and even the ones I wasn't interested in were fun to watch. The post-match of Page/Janela had me laughing so hard I was choking.

Realistically, Wrestle Kingdom 12 (one 5*, one 4 3/4*, two 4 1/2*, one 4 1/4* matches) or Dominion (one 7*, one 4 3/4*, two 4 1/2* matches) would be Number 1. All In is nowhere near the quality of these two shows, especially given the fact how the main event went down.

Also, to the previous discussion: Jay White has about as much charisma as a stone and it's hurting every match that he is in. Whoever buys into him and that stupid, unfitting gimmick probably also believes that the Earth is flat.

Omega vs Pentagon Jr. was decent, it had some fun moments. It didn't feel that special though... barring the Cero Miedo taunts during the v-triggers, there was no substantial character work on display and that was a disappointing because both are such eclectic, dynamic personalities. I expected them to say a lot without doing much. I got the impression (call it a gut feeling) that Omega wasn't all that motivated for the match. He just wanted to play his greatest hits and go home. It means that, in 2018, Sami Callihan had a superior match to Kenny Omega against the same opponent.

Main event was really really fun. Bandido and Fenix are both super smooth with the gift of great timing and magical athleticism. I was really impressed with both, they managed to wow what must have been a pretty tired crowd (can't blame them, they had to watch an Okada match). Ibushi and The Bucks were there I guess, didn't do anything noteworthy though lol. Mysterio is one of the greatest wrestling talents of all-time so I was really happy to see him here.

I'll probably watch the entire event at some point. I heard good things about Magnus vs Cody, apparently it was a good old school heavyweight wrestling clash. I'm looking forward to giving it a watch if that's the case.

All In is probably the closest we will get to an ECW-type show this era, and I'm not talking about hardcore, I'm talking about the crowd. Unless, of course, Cody somehow manages to make a promotion and WWE doesn't steal all of its talent, which seems highly unlikely. But a man can dream, right? <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I don't have the network but I can point you in the right direction for a few things.... and I'm going to go out of my way to keep you away from spoilers even though you no doubt know many already. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> Sadly, it seems that some of the best videos on NJPW have disappeared over the last six months... likely some copyright takedowns. <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

First up, given the time of year we are at and how much you can catch up on I think the best thing to do would be to familiarise yourself with many of the main NJPW guys and a little history. Youtube has some great video essays about some of the key events, stables, roster members and storylines that were around in the lead up to theiWrestlemania level event, Wrestle Kingdon. This is held on January 4th each year, with another big show the night after that kicks off a lot of events for the next year.

INFO LINKS (perhaps more to come soon)

Wrestle Kingdom (January 4th)

January 5th

The Tale Of The Golden Lovers (Kenny Omega & Kota Ibushi) - (best viewed after the two major January shows but a great video for information on both)

After those shows you should have a basic idea of what the company is about and hopefully be super excited by some of the awesome matches they had there. Every major NJPW event is a must see, with many of the smaller events being multi-man tag hype matches with some lesser title matches thrown in to headline some of them. I'll try to avoid spoilers for you, but there are some great ones scattered throughout

New Japan Cup (March)

Around this time every year the company hold the New Japan Cup, which features 16 men in a single elimination tournament. The winner earns the right to challenge any champion on the roster for their title at Sakura Genesis (assuming they are eligible for the belt) and had some great matches again this year. IIRC, the tournament matches were spread across 4 shows (1 for each round, plus undercard matches) though it might have been 5 to spread out the first round. Well worth a watch and lets you know more about some rising stars in the company along with some top guys outside the title scene.

Sakura Genesis (April)

One of the big four events of the year, this was great at the time and features the winner of the New Japan Cup taking on the champion of his choosing among other great matches. After this (or perhaps in the lead up to this, I forget) there were also several title matches as main events for smaller shows though you'd do well to look for those yourself.

Best Of Super Juniors (May)

The Best of Super Juniors is a Juniors only tournament, featuring 16 men in two blocks of eight each. It tends to feature a lot of exciting talents from around the world, including a lot of people who aren't full time members of the roster. For these shows, the second half features the actual tournament matches while the first half tends to be hype for the other matches and some other heavyweight things.

Dominion (June)

This show was fantastic and comes hot on the heels of the BOSJ tournament, with the winner of that challenging the reigning Junior champion. Some fans argue that this was even better than Wrestle Kingdom, and I'd say that without a doubt those have been the two best events of any wrestling company this year so far. Go out of your way to check this out if you can.

G1 American Special (July)

NJPW are taking over the world... they had this show in America, which was great, and a couple of co-promoted events with RevPro in the UK too. All of them are worth a look but the American one in particular is the one to watch, with some great matches and it's pretty cool to see them expanding out into the world. You may have heard about NJPW/ROH booking Madison Square Garden on Wrestlemania weekend in 2019... between this event and All In, you should be able to see why.

G1 Climax (July/August)

Recently NJPW held the G1 Climax, which is the biggest wrestling tournament of the year and features 20 heavyweights competing in two groups of 10. Everyone faces everyone else, the winner of each block then faces off in the final and the winner earns the right to face the IWGP Heavyweght champion at Wrestle Kingdom. Yes, that's a build of about 5 months. In the meantime, both the champion and challenger will defend against people, usually those they lost to in the G1 or have heated personal rivalries with. As with the BOSJ events, the first half of each tour show features tag matches with the block members who aren't in singles action and can largely be ignored if you want to speed up your viewing. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Happening Now

We are currently on the Destruction tour, which leads to a few Destruction events coming up soon. Those will be headlined by a variety of major matches and titles but in order to avoid spoilers for you I'll keep them out of here just now. Needless to say, if you haven't had enough NJPW yet then there should be some great stuff coming up soon. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Lastly....

I just want to add a few thoughts of my own. NJPW has some amazing in ring talent and does a good job at distinguishing between jobbers (young lions, some veterans), rising stars (usually seconds in stables) and stars (leaders and people with strong links to them). Learning who is in what stable certainly helps, though with very few stables mixing it's usually pretty obvious. There are lots of talent not affiliiated with a group too, with Hiroshi Tanahashi (legend) being the main one of those.

On the roster, my favourites in no particular order are.... Kenny Omega, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Minoru Suzuki, Juice Robinson, Zack Sabre Jr, Kota Ibushi and Hirooki Goto. Okada is probably on that list too, he's great. Oh... and Tokyo Latina. For a different reason entirely. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Naito is hyping a new member of LIJ that will debut at King of Pro Wrestling.

The two names I keep seeing pop up in predictions are Shingo and Sho.

I’d be more than ok with either member.

The other name I keep seeing is the young lion Kawato, but he’s booked in Mexico, so unless the booking is a work, it’s not him.

He doesn’t fit LIJ’s style, but I’d freak the heck out of Kitamura made his return. I’ve been following him on Instagram and he’s in even better shape than he was before the concussion. Hopefully he’s safe to return to the ring.
