Storm on the Horizon (WWF 1991)

Recommended Posts

I think I've got it figured out. I still have the problem of people getting a lot more timeslots than they should, but I can live with that as opposed to the alternative.

I should hopefully have the first card up later tonight.

The conversion is not very good with broadcasters. I'm working on it for a release.

Yeah, I'm guessing that's what's keeping a lot of companies from financial solvency (I'm probably going to bail out companies that seem to be on the verge of financial collapse.) I've edited out all but a few broadcast deals for international companies finding their way out of their home region, and the remaining ones are small enough that they don't completely distract from the game.

We are welcomed in to WWF Superstars, where this week we have a huge main event grudge match, as The Model Rick Martel goes one on one with Jake The Snake Roberts. Plus a Battle Royal just one week ahead of the Royal Rumble, and a huge announcement from Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior.

Match #1: Saba Simba vs. The Barbarian w/Bobby Heenan

It was business as usual for the Heenan family's resident monster, as The Barbarian seemed to look past his competition for tonight as he took on Saba Simba. Despite the best efforts of the African native though, The Barbarian still took care of him with relative ease, disposing of him with a huge boot to the face that knocked him flat out.

Winner by pinfall: The Barbarian

We see a pre-recorded message from a man in a white office shirt, suspenders and a surly look on his face. He says his name is Irwin R. Schyster, and he is here to clean up the World Wrestling Federation of all the tax cheats out there. He says that everyone can run, but no one can hide, from I.R.S.

Match #2: Intercontinental Title Match: Mr. Perfect w/Bobby Heenan © vs. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine

The former Intercontinental champion took it to the current one, as the grizzled veteran looked to have something to prove tonight (and to try and regain the gold, of course). The match was actually pretty evenly matched, until Valentine looked like he might pull an upset and hook Perfect in the Figure-4. Unfortunately The Honky Tonk Man took that opportunity to come to ringside, and distract the challenger. This let Mr. Perfect score a roll-up and hold the tights to get the cheap victory.

Winner by pinfall and STILL Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect

We come back from commercial to find Gene Okerlund standing by with two of the most powerful men in the World Wrestling Federation, Hulk Hogan and the WWF Champion The Ultimate Warrior. Both men say that, after the Ultimate Challenge last year, they earned each other's respect. And they know that the battles that they are fighting against Sgt. Slaughter are bigger than either one of them. That's why they have pledged to watch each others back for as long as the battle takes.

Match #3: Bret "The Hitman" Hart vs. Marty Jannetty

Fresh off the victory last week, The Rockers tried to make it two for two in singles competition against The Hart Foundation. However Bret Hart had other plans. The Excellence of Execution showed why that was his moniker, as he physically dissected an admittedly game Marty Jannetty. Jannetty's high flying offense just was no match for the Hitman's ground game, as Bret finished him off with the Sharpshooter.

Winner By Submission: Bret "The Hitman" Hart

Backstage Sean Mooney is standing by with the Million Dollar Man and Virgil, both of whom will be in the upcoming battle royal match and the Royal Rumble. Mooney asks DiBiase what will happen if it comes down to the two of them in the match, and DiBiase says its simple, Virgil will do exactly what he's paid to do, make the Million Dollar Man look good. Virgil, though he has a sour expression on his face, merely stands stoic.

Match #4: 20 Man Battle Royal

Though not all the participants in this battle royal would be in the 30 man royal rumble, we still have quite a fair representation therein. Earthquake and Tugboat seemed content to fight amongst themselves, while DiBiase hung in the corner and let others do most of the work. The British Bulldog had the most eliminations in the match with four, before he himself was tossed out by Earthquake at the end, while Virgil unceremoniously snuck up behind Quake and then eliminated him from the match. At the end, DiBiase and Virgil were the last two men in the ring, and true to form DiBiase ordered Virgil to hit the bricks. Virgil appeared to think twice about it, and almost wanted to fight DiBiase, but the Million Dollar Man warned him to think about his family and their well being. Virgil reluctantly relented, and jumped over the top rope, literally handing the victory to DiBiase.

Winner: The Million Dollar Man

Match #5: Rick "The Model" Martel vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts

One of the blood feuds of the WWF, Martel and Roberts competed in a very evenly paced matchup. The Snake tried several times to end it early with a DDT, but Martel always seemed to be one step ahead of him. After slowing the match down, Martel seemed to become frustrated when everything he tried couldn't but Roberts away. By the end of the match, The Snake had rallied and had set up Martel for the DDT, but Martel countered and tossed Roberts into the referee. Martel used the distraction to once again try to spray Roberts in the eyes with Arrogance, but Roberts countered. He threatened to use the cologne on Martel, who fell to his knees begging for mercy, when Martel scored a low blow on The Snake and then cradled him into a small package, just in time for the referee to roll over and count the pinfall.

Winner by pinfall: Rick "The Model" Martel

Martel runs out of the arena as Roberts looks on incensed. The feud between the two is clearly not over, as we close out the show.

- There was a major frackus at the WWF Superstars tapings this week, as Kerry von Erich (better known as The Texas Tornado) showed up to the event stoned out of his mind. Von Erich insisted he was okay to go, but it was clear from the opening bell that he wasn't. While the match proceeded without anyone getting hurt, Savage was furious at von Erich's lack of discipline, and furthermore the Tornado had gotten into a fight with another star (this time Kato of the Orient Express) seemed to be the last straw. von Erich was ordered to rehab and, when he responded negatively to that, Vince McMahon fired him on the spot. The match will still air this week as planned, but a kayfabe injury will be circulated to explain his absence from the Rumble Match.

Randy Savage - Pretty easy win after Kerry was axed. Maybe this is Kevin coming in to replace his brother? Doesn't matter either way.

Sgt. Slobber - Title contender picks up nice win.

Big Bossman - Demolition are definitely on the downswing and need serious building back up. It will not start here.

The Rockers - Since they are set to get title shots.

Owen Hart - Boris is pretty much done.

The World Wrestling Federation is proud to bring you the WWF Royal Rumble. One of the premier events in all of sports entertainment, the Royal Rumble promises to be a grand spectacle that kicks off the road to Wrestlemania VII. Featuring the most exciting sixty minutes in all of sports entertainment, plus two title matches as well. Here's the lineup:

30-Man Royal Rumble Match

Andre the Giant, Animal, Boris Zhukov, Crush, Dino Bravo, Earthquake, Haku, Hawk, Hercules, Hulk Hogan, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, Kato, Mr. Perfect, Nikolai Volkoff, Paul Roma, Razor Ramon, "The Model" Rick Martel, Saba Simba, Shane Douglas, Smash, Tanaka, The British Bulldog, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, The Undertaker, The Warlord, Tito Santana, Tugboat, Virgil

The centerpiece of the event is the annual 30 man over the top rope Royal Rumble match itself, and this one promises to be one of the most star-studded in history. The odds on favorite going in should probably be last year's winner, The Immortal Hulk Hogan, but he's going to face stiff competition. Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect has been on a hot streak as of late, as has the man from the dark side in The Undertaker. Superheavyweights Tugboat and Earthquake will be difficult to get out, to say nothing of the undisputed "King of the Battle Royals" the Eighth Wonder of the World, Andre the Giant. Ted DiBiase has a potential ally in this match in the form of his bodyguard Virgil. Or perhaps another dark horse like Jake Roberts, Rick Martel or The British Bulldog could emerge victorious? It's every man for himself.

World Wrestling Federation Championship

The Ultimate Warrior © vs. Sgt. Slaughter w/General Adnan

The Ultimate Warrior will be defending much more than the WWF Championship when he steps into the ring with the #1 contender at the Royal Rumble, he'll be defending the honor of all the men and women in the Armed Forces of the United States as they continue to fight for our freedom overseas. Slaughter has become the modern day Benedict Arnold, turning his back on his country in favor of Saddam Hussein's callousness. But with that new attitude has come a winning streak a mile long. Can Slaughter strike a blow to America for the Iraqi dictator, or will The Ultimate Warrior turn back his challenge. And what role will malcontent "Macho King" Randy Savage play in this, if any?

Big Bossman vs. The Barbarian w/Bobby "The Brain" Heenan

Over the last several weeks, Bobby Heenan has made it his mission to insult the mother of the WWF's resident lawman at every possible turn. Bossman has naturally taken an exception to this, and has promised to run through every single member of the Heenan family one right after the other. After dispatching Haku in short order, the Bossman has now set his sights on The Barbarian, who has become a thorn in his side in the last couple of weeks. The physicality between these two bruisers will be off the scales, to say the least.

The Mountie w/Jimmy Hart vs. Koko B. Ware

The "other" lawman of the WWF, The Mountie, has been racking up impressive win after impressive win as of late, and looks to be on a streak that won't soon be stopped. The Birdman begs to differ, however, as Koko looks to stop the Canadian in his tracks at the Royal Rumble.

World Wrestling Federation Tag Team Championship Match

The Hart Foundation © vs. The Rockers

Back in October, The Rockers defeated The Hart Foundation for the Tag Team Titles at an untelevised event. However, the top rope in that match had fallen off the ring, creating an unfair situation. In the interest of fairness, WWF President Jack Tunney reversed the ruling and nullified the match, returning the titles to the Hart Foundation. He also then gave The Rockers another opportunity at the champions, one that they will attempt to capitalize on at the Royal Rumble.

Honky Tonk Man w/Jimmy Hart vs. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine

After years of being overshadowed by the Honky Tonk Man and forced to act "like a fool" as he says, The Hammer has broken free of his former manager and tag team partner. The two former IC Champions will do battle at the Rumble, and The Hammer is now out to show the Honky Tonk Man a new shade of Blues...as in Black and Blue.

Both teams were evenly matched throughout, with Jannetty and Michaels isolating Bret Hart in the early going. The Hitman regained an advantage though and managed to do the same thing to Michaels, tagging in between he and The Anvil on numerous occasions, but unable to put Shawn away. Eventually Michaels got a tag to his partner, who came in guns a blazing, but in essentially a two on one matchup, he too was overcome by the numbers game. The Rockers did rally back near the end, but it looked to be all over when the Foundation set up Jannetty for a Hart Attack finisher. When out of nowhere Michaels hit a flying forearm to Bret, taking him out. Jannetty fought his way out of the grasp of The Anvil and hit a cross body block at the same time Michaels hit a low sweeping kick to take out the Anvil's legs. Slaughter and General Adnan. While Adnan espouses a promo in Arabic, Slaughter roughly translates as that the battle plan has been laid out, and all that's left to do is to execute it to perfection. He says that the Ultimate Alliance between Hulkamania and the Ultimate Warrior doesn't mean anything, compared to the might and power of Sgt. Slaughter. He says that tonight is his night, and that he will prove the superiority of not only Iraqi strategy over the American scum, but that he will prove that he himself is the greatest military tactician today, and that he will become the next World Wrestling Federation Champion.</em></p><p> </p><p> <strong>Match #4: WWF Championship Match: The Ultimate Warrior © vs. Sgt. Slaughter w/General Adnan</strong></p><p> <em>The Warrior comes out decked in red white and blue, and a sneak attack from Slaughter can't seem to stop him from running roughshod over the challenger in the earlygoing. It seems like it's going to be an early ending for the challenger, but the appearance of the Sensational Sherri at ringside distracts the Warrior long enough for Slaughter to gain the upper hand. This brings out the Warrior's friend and ally, Hulk Hogan, who stands at the ready to guard the Warrior. Warrior fights back, despite Slaughter's clearly underhanded tactics, and prepares to go for the press slam. General Adnan tries to intervene, but Hogan intercepts him, which allows the Macho King to come running from the back. Slaughter manages to get the Warrior down and the ref distracted long enough for Savage to nail Warrior in between the eyes with the sceptre and run off like a thief in the night as Hogan chases him off. Warlord looks up angrily at Herc, who simply shrugs his shoulders, only to be hit by a Mr. Perfect dropkick which sends </em></strong><strong><strong><em>him out onto the floor at 1:33 seconds.</em></strong></strong><strong><em> The buzzer sounds as we are getting down near the end...</em></strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="41516" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><strong>#25 is Earthquake</strong></strong></p><p><strong> The British Bulldog- 40:00</strong></p><p><strong> Razor Ramon- 16:00</strong></p><p><strong> Mr. Perfect- 8:00</strong></p><p><strong> Hulk Hogan- 6:00</strong></p><p><strong> Ted DiBiase- 4:00</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong><strong><em>The big Quake makes his way to the ring, immediately going after his hated nemesis Hogan, who has quietly dropped by DiBiase and Razor. Hogan takes the opportunity to try and throw Perfect out of the ring. Perfect hangs on to the bottom rope, his feet never touching the floor, as Hogan turns around and thinks he has won. When he realizes what has happened though, he turns around in time to catch Perfect, who was sneaking up from behind, with a big boot. He follows that up with the Atomic Legdrop across the head of Perfect. Hogan signals that he is going to toss Perfect out of the ring, when from the back comes the man known only as Abdullah, one of the men who assaulted Hogan earlier, flanked by Sgt. Slaughter. <em>- The general mood following the Royal Rumble is one of positivity, as the show went off well. The crowd was into the Ultimate Warrior/Slaughter match, despite the overbooked finish, and the Hart Foundation/Rockers match stole the show as both teams work tremendously together, and Michaels and Hart have great chemistry between them.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- Despite this, there is some negativity from the backstage area. Hogan wasn't happy with the initial finish of the Royal Rumble (rumor is he wanted to win the whole thing), so the decision was made to add Slaughter to the shenanigans at the ending, and have Hulk be beaten down earlier (so he had an excuse for the loss). Hogan seemed to be appeased by an after-show speech in which Vince pointed him out as a good example.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- In addition, Randy Savage and Wayne Ferris (Honky Tonk Man) reignited their old feud as a fight broke out between the two of them, one that Ferris had instigated. Honky Tonk is already on thin ice as a result of botching a move and giving the British Bulldog a minor injury (that thankfully didn't keep him out of the Rumble), and Ferris was read the riot act by McMahon following the incident. He seemed to have responded well, though, but it's thought he won't be retained when his contract is up in a couple of months.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- Expect a big singles push for Bret Hart in the future. It's uncertain where that leaves The Anvil, though management still has hope for him as a midcard face.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- There has been talk at Titan Towers of adding a lower midcard-midcard belt to the WWF, to help expand storylines. There's no definitive answer yet, but there has been discussions of either a television title (with time limit restrictions) or a lesser valued IC Title that would be like a North American Title Belt or European Title Belt.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- The man identified as "Abdullah" at the Royal Rumble, making his debut with Sgt. Slaughter and General Adnan, is indeed the legendary Abdullah the Butcher. Word is that its a short term written deal.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<p>(No spoilers here for anyone who sees this post first) I am happily surprised to see the winner of the Rumble! I wonder where he is able to go from this position though, as by 1991, the rose had already been off the cherry, so to speak. I don't really think that this pencils him in for WrestleMania's main events at all, but this could definitely become a huge building block toward a Summerslam main event.</p><p> </p><p>

Ultimate Alliance - <em>Poor Demolition.</em></p><p>

The Rockers - <em>Easy to see the tension between Ted and Virgil, along with the Rockers having their first defense.</em></p><p>

Razor Ramon - <em>I doubt Jake is done with Martel, so he probably costs Jake the match.</em></p><p>

British Bulldog - <em>European strongman handily defeats Canadian's Strongest Man.</em></p><p>

Heavenly Bodies - <em>Lane and Prichard or Prichard and Del Ray? One of the most important parts is if Cornette is involved.</em></p>

We are welcomed in to WWF Superstars this week once again by our trio of announcers, as we find out that on tonight's show, the so-called Ultimate Alliance of Hulk Hogan and the man who is still the World Wrestling Federation Champion, The Ultimate Warrior, will team up to face Demolition in the main event. The new tag team champions will also put the gold on the line.

Match #1: Owen Hart & Shane Douglas vs. The Heavenly Bodies w/James E. Cornette

Owen Hart and Shane Douglas have turned some heads in their young careers here in the World Wrestling Federation, and both have decided to team up to ply their wares in the tag division. Cornette's Heavenly Bodies have also been on a winning streak, and the two teams had an evenly paced matchup throughout. The chemistry between Douglas and Hart was obvious, and they nearly pulled out the upset. However a timely intervention from Mr. Cornette allowed the Bodies to continue on their winning ways.

Winners by Pinfall: The Heavenly Bodies

In the Barbershop, the winner of the Royal Rumble match, Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect, was this week's guest along with his manager Bobby Heenan. Perfect says that this is exactly what should have happened last year, but that now that he's won the Royal Rumble, and cemented his status as the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time, that he will move on to bigger and better things, namely the WWF Title. Beefcake asks if he's getting a little ahead of himself, given the soon to occur title defense against the Big Bossman, but Perfect and Heenan merely shrug that off.

Match #2: The British Bulldog vs. Dino Bravo w/Jimmy Hart

The Canadian strongman got the upper hand early on the British Bulldog, a side effect of Bulldog's nearly hour long performance in the Rumble a week earlier. But Bulldog's strength and tenacity won out the day, and he surprised the veteran with some quick movements and finished him off with a running powerslam.

Winner by pinfall: The British Bulldog

After the match, Earthquake appeared at ringside, apparently ready to challenge Bulldog for the fact that he eliminated him at the Rumble match. However while Bulldog was distracted, The Nasty Boys came from the back and attacked him, leaving him lying face down on the canvas.

Backstage with Gene Okerlund, Sgt. Slaughter and his Corps of Destruction, General Adanan and the newly christened Captain Abdullah, bemoan the fact that Slaughter was cost the WWF title, by Hulk Hogan. Okerlund points out that it was the Macho King who got involved, but Slaughter retorts that it was Hogan who stuck is nose where it didn't belong. But like any good soldier, he waited for the right moment to strike, which came when Capt. Abdullah and he cost Hogan the Royal Rumble Match.

Match #3: Jake "The Snake" Roberts vs. Razor Ramon

Razor had made a good showing for himself in the Rumble match, but was facing his toughest challenge yet in the form of Jake Roberts. And it seemed that Razor wasn't quite up to the challenge, until the appearance of one Rick Martel at ringside. Martel appeared to distract Jake, and then suddenly grabbed the bag containing Damien and ran off from ringside with it, with Jake giving chase. The referee counted, and the match went to Razor Ramon via countout.

Winner by countout: Razor Ramon

Backstage Gene Okerlund is standing by with the challengers for the WWF Tag Team Titles tonight, The Million Dollar Man and his bodyguard Virgil. DiBiase talks about how Virgil may have ruined their plans at the Rumble (dismissing the fact that Virgil lasted three times as long as DiBiase himself did), but that tonight he has earned one more chance to redeem himself, by winning the tag team gold. The Rockers are going to be in for a shock, as just when they think all their dreams have come true, the Million Dollar Man is there, to wake them up to the nightmare of reality.

Match #4: WWF Tag Team Title Match: The Rockers vs. The Million Dollar Man & Virgil

DiBiase was content to allow Virgil to take care of much of the match, opting to come in only when Jannetty or Michaels was down. The new champions managed to regain control of the match though, and a botched attempt at a double team where DiBiase inadvertantly hit Virgil led to the champs retaining the titles.

Winners by pinfall and STILL WWF Tag Team Champions: The Rockers

After the match, DiBiase continued verbally berating Virgil for losing the match. DiBiase went so far as to spit on Virgil, who appeared near his breaking point. DiBiase goaded him on, saying that he knew Virgil wanted to hit him, to pay him back for all the humiliation, but that it wouldn't happen. DiBiase then ordered Virgil to wrap the Million Dollar Belt around his waist. Virgil started to do so, causing DiBiase to laugh, but Virgil then stopped. When DiBiase turned around, Virgil promptly dropped his employer by smashing the belt across his skull, much to the joy of Roddy Piper at ringside.

Match #5: The Ultimate Warrior & Hulk Hogan vs. Demolition w/Mr. Fuji

The Ultimate Alliance definitely lived up to its name, as Smash and Crush were simply overwhelmed by the two top dogs in the WWF. The former three time tag champs did manage to get some offense in on Hogan, but once Warrior tagged back in it was all over as Warrior hit the Press Slam on Smash for the victory.

Winners by Pinfall: The Ultimate Warrior & Hulk Hogan

After the match, though, the Alliance was blindsided by an attack not just from Slaughter and his merry band of misfits, but by the Macho King as well. All four men took to beating down the Alliance, as they stood tall in the ring to conclude the evening.

<em>- Two weeks out from the next Saturday Night's Main Event (which will now be aired on the USA Network as opposed to NBC), the main event has been announced, featuring Hulk Hogan teaming with the Ultimate Warrior to face Sgt. Slaughter and the Macho King Randy Savage. In addition, Mr. Perfect will defend the Intercontinental Championship against the Big Bossman, and the team of Power and Glory will face the Legion of Doom in a #1 contendership match.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- Speaking of those four, Wrestlemania VII is poised to feature a double main event, with Slaughter taking on Hogan in some kind of gimmick match, and Warrior facing Savage for the title.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- Barry Darsow (Smash of Demolition) suffered a minor injury last week and will be laid up for a few days. Management isn't exactly sure what to do with Demolition at the moment, but if they split up expect Darsow and Brian Adams (Crush) to be repackaged with new gimmicks.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- Management is pleased with the chemistry shown between Shane Douglas and Owen Hart as a tag team. Expect them to be a regular pairing from now on, in addition to singles matches.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- At the moment there is no word on any future acquisitions that will be made to the company, although management is always in line for decent hands they can find.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>
