The Climb [RMW, CVerse]

Im Surprised that PGHW won the war of Post-Tsunami Japan. I've never seen that happen.

I have but its very rare that PGHW doesn't go out of business beforehand.

It's like either PGHW kicks it very early like the first 3 years or they somehow outlast Burning who every time I've seen them die dies like 10 years into the game.

He’s back.....but didn’t get the triumphant return he deserves. I think he deserves a rematch, for the title. I can see it now, CWL TV champion, “Relentless” Wesley Browning.

Make it happen!

He is back! The Relentless one has returned. I promise there is something more than just being an enhancement talent for him.

Well, the Tsunami claimed both BCG and GCG -- BHOTWG bought them both out, then got hit with an embezzlement scandal, went into debt for a significant amount of time and I was able to buy them out. So PGHW survived because of that -- though WLW has been the 'winner'. They are the number two company in the world right now.

Bahahahahhaa!'

Out of curiosity, are you more popular in Japan than in he United States? You probably could get a TV/PPV deal in Japan but I could see why you wont for narrative purposes.

Her hands tightened around the ropes that were draped on her shoulder. The ropes were attached to weights several feet behind her. The rope slack between her and the weights. Her hazel eyes were focused ahead. Straight ahead. Leon Pena stood to the side with a stop watch in his hand. He was timing Pearl.

Pearl was focused. Deeply focused. At two hundred and five pounds, she was the heaviest woman on the roster. She thought she carried it well. It wasn't in her midsection as much as it was in her hips and thighs and even then it was primarily muscle. She had always been big. At five feet seven, she was above average height for a woman, and with her weight she was the big power house of the women's division. Her and Teresa Newton. Because of her size, she felt the need to train harder. To show Ricky and Sean and Pete and Robert and whomever else may have a say in any creative decision for CWL that she was in tip top shape. She could continue to be a player in the women's division.

"Ready?" Leon's heavily accented English asked her. Without looking, she nodded. "Go." He said and she pushed herself off. Her feet dug into the floor. Her legs pumped. Her jaw clenched and she moved forward as fast as she could. The weight was heavy behind her, but she pushed forward. She had to have the best time. Wrestling was -- despite what anyone wanted to proclaim -- a cosmetic industry. Sure, you could be heavy set and still be a star, but the people with the most impressive physiques were generally the ones pushed. It was easier to make them stars. Pearl needed to be in the best shape of all of the women. She knew that wrestling had made a lot of progress. She and Lauren had just main evented Saturday Night Slammasters against Alicia and Brooke. The women were taken seriously -- at least in companies that presented them seriously. Robert had always presented the women as seriously athletes. He wasn't Brother Grimm who wanted a bunch of eye candy. There was no requirement here to have a bunch of 'hot' girls to appease the appetites of men who wouldn't know how to talk to them anyway. The women in the CWL were athletes. Pearl took a lot of pride in being an athlete. She wanted to be the best...

Leon watched his friend drag the weight behind her. They had become friends in Amarillo. Pearl was one of the few people who was fluent in Spanish. Sure, Leon spoke English, but it was nice to be able to speak his native tongue with someone. He had grown up in Mexico City as a fan of MPWF. He was not an OLLIE loyalist. He was not a South of the Border guy. He liked the Mexican Premier Wrestling Federation. To him, it was the premier organization -- or had been until he closed. He had grown up with their footage. With Mr. Lucha, Luis Montero, Sam Keith, Pablo Rodriguez, Electrico, Spanish Superfly, Magnifico, Soul Taker... His heroes. The men who had inspired him to follow in their footsteps, but no lucha companies had called. Robert Oxford did. Called him to go to Texas. So he went. And there he met Pearl. They were a platonic pair. Almost like siblings in the way they interacted. They trained together. Rode to the shows together. Went over footage together. Studied the game together.

He had wanted to be a lucha libre star. He had wanted to be the rebirth of classic lucha libre. Not the lucha-sports entertainment of a South of the Border. He wanted to be the lucha that his father had grown up on. His grandfather. It was a family tradition. It was hertiage -- and wasn't that what lucha libre was? More so than any other style of professional wrestling. Lucha libre was inherited. Masks. Feuds. Name. Legends. All inherited. Leon's inheritance did not take him to one of the great lucha companies, but it took him here. To a friendship with a girl from the trailerparks of New Mexico. To a Television Championship and a legion of young latino fans who wanted his autograph. It had made him a budding star in a company that was on an upward trajectory. It had given him a future that at twenty-two years old and three years as a professional, he knew was bright. MPWF had closed when he was a teenager. When it did, his father cried. His father, who hated South of the Border wrestling. Who hated Jorge Ibanez. Who hated what they represented, because they were not what lucha libre was supposed to be. Leon Pena was.

He thought all of this while he timed Pearl. He thought all of this in the blink of an eye. In the twenty-eight seconds it took her to finish her sled drag. "Your best time yet."

She nodded and took several deep breaths. Leon tossed her the bottle of water he was holding. She downed the whole thing in one long gulp. They were both driven be the same goal. They just wanted to be the best. Not the biggest stars, just the best.

She looked at him. "One more time." Her voice was heavy with the intake of air.

Leon nodded at his friend. "One more time." He told her as she picked the ropes up again. The weighted sled behind her once more. She was the daughter of a single mother. Grew up in a trailer park. Not in an ashamed way. In her mother could afford the mortgage on a forty-thousand dollar mobile home way. In a pride of ownership of something even so minimal. Pearl was a proud woman. Her mother was a proud woman. A three jobs to make ends meet woman. Leon respected that. They respected each other.

"Go." He said and she took off once more...

I would argue that in today's day and age, with the death of kayfabe and the rise of social media, fans know so much about the wrestlers' real lives and struggles, it becomes part of their in-character and storylines. AEW especially does a great job on that and it's evident on how they not only acknowledge but use the struggles of Cody, Moxley and Spears in WWE to do promos and tell a story, how they use Being the Elite to expand on narratives, how they're building on the Runnels' past for Cody vs Dustin, then Rhodes vs Bucks and now Cody vs Spears with Tully Blanchard on his side. NJPW does the same in a different manner: knowing the real life connection between, say, Shibata and Kenta, Naito and Takagi or Ibushi and Omega, adds a whole new dimension of drama and storytelling when you watch a show where that comes up.

This diary and Historian's writing has managed to do the exact same thing, but using TEW and these forums. We already know the workers from their bios, their struggles, their relationships but the narratives manage to build on those, expand them and update them as the game world evolves. After so many narratives about McManus, he really feels like the Cornerstone of CWL, he's not just named that because of his time with the company and his achievements with it. With all the naratives between him and Lisa Bowen, it felt special to read him wrestling Spencer Spade with Lisa on Spade's corner, then we got a post-match narrative that dealt with exactly that. The Devil's Rejects feel like a group because we've had narratives of them chilling together backstage. KC Glenn's flight to Japan and his big return were all the more impactful because of the narratives around his love story with Marjorie Oxford, not just because he's a good worker with solid pop.

I'll admit I'm a sucker for good visual presentation in a diary; it doesn't have to be flashy, but I won't bother if there's not at least portraits of the wrestlers on display. I struggle to stay focused and interested when there's a wall of text involved and I imagine several others do too. Historian has managed to provide great stuff to read and he's been making minor graphics updates on the way too, covering both bases. There's a reason why The Climb has been going on for so long and has been so successful.

I agree with the above as well from Dark Raider. The stories are amazing and the visuals with pictures etc adds to the story. The graphic part is the main reason why I haven’t done a dynasty here, but slowly I’m working my way to figure it out. Historian has sent me some things and some others have offered to get me “up to speed” at least to a basic graphic basis. I won’t be doing all the bells and whistles but hope to at least present something that can showcase who the talent is. And the pictures (renders) being done today are so much more advance than they were several years ago. Brings it up to a whole new level.

Great job Historian, your fast approaching 1 year (3 months to go). Congrats

He clutched the microphone in his right hand. His left hand was extended out towards the crowd. His long, dark hair held out of his face by his bandana. Johnny Anderson was at home in two places. The wrestling ring and the stage. Tonight it was the later. The Denver Warehouse, a concert venue located in Denver was the home of this event. Almost five hundred people had filled it. He was, after all, a local celebrity. He had been on TV in the Denver area for years. Pretty much since he started wrestling. They knew who he was and tonight was a special night. Tonight was the night that Johnny Anderson released his first album.

Johnny sang into the microphone. His voice was classified as a tenor. Not as low as a bass singer, but low none the less. It carried a lot of weight and pain in it. Gravelly. Johnny put his all into the words.

"I know you loved him, a long time ago

Even now in my arms, you still want him I know

But darling this time, your memories die

When you hold me tonight, don't close your eyes"

He sang the old Keith Whitley song. He had made it more bluesy than typical country. He'd describe himself as a blues singer more than a country singer -- or a blues/soul singer, but he would take any kind of radio play he could get. His eyes were narrowed. He was above the crowd. Above the noise. He could see everything. He could see Keith and Luis and Brett and February by the bar. Keith towered over everyone. They looked so proud. Their pride in him made him dig deeper into himself. To pull the song from the depths of his core.

"Don't close your eyes, let it be me

Don't pretend it's him, in some fantasy

Darling just once, let yesterday go

And you'll find more love than you'll ever know

Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight

And don't close your eyes"

Along with Dolly Parton's Jolene, this might be the saddest love song ever wrote. A man begging his woman to not let her mind stray. To stay be present in the moment with him. It took a willingness to be open, to admit the kind of doubts that creep into your mind when you love a woman that you're not entirely convinced is all in on the relationship. At twenty-seven years old, Johnny understood that all to well. Johnny had thought, foolishly so, that he'd been in love before. Some woman who came to the matches all the time. She would come to the bar after. She bought Johnny drinks. Could you believe that? She bought the drinks. She never asked him for anything. She just wanted to be with him and Johnny was sure he'd found the one. Yet here he was. On a stage with the spotlight on him. His voice carrying out over the crowd. Friends and strangers alike were mesmorized by the sound of his voice. But Laura? She was somewhere else. With some med student, or lawyer or accountant. Someone who wasn't Johnny.

"Maybe I've, been a fool, holding on all this time

Lying here in your arms, knowing he's in your mind

But I keep hoping someday, that you'll see the light

Let it be tonight and don't close your eyes"

For six years, Johnny had dedicated himself to his wrestling career and his music. He'd played shows when he wasn't training or on the road. He practiced and wrote songs on a near daily basis. He kept a notebook with him for the car rides with Keith and February so he could write in the car. He studied the greats. Stevie Ray, Merle, Whitley, Redding, Yoakm. He consumed music. He had been working on this album for a long time. With the exception of this song, every song on his album was written by him. No other writers. No other composers or producers. Just him and his brain pouring into the music.

"Don't close your eyes, let it be me

Don't pretend it's him, in some fantasy

Darling just once, let yesterday go

And you'll find more love than you'll ever know

Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight

And don't close your eyes"

His voice rang out. He made eye contact with two women at the front of the stage. One of them, with scarlet hair and eyes the color of envy, was reaching for him. She was in this moment with him. That's what music could do. It could connect people who would otherwise never been connected. This woman didn't know him. She didn't know what kept him up at night. She didn't know that sometimes he looked at Keith and February and it made his stomach wrench. They were so happy together -- and such an odd couple to be happy together. Johnny was jealous. He didn't want February -- but he wanted someone. Maybe the scarlet-haired woman also wanted someone. Maybe she couldn't sleep most nights because the other side of her bed was empty.

"Don't close your eyes, let it be me

Don't pretend it's him, in some fantasy

Darling just once, let yesterday go

And you'll find more love than you'll ever know

Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight

And don't close your eyes"

Maybe she too knew what it was like to not feel good enough. To be afraid that the person you're with doesn't really want to be with you. They want to be with a previous lover. The one they never got over. The one they were convinced was the right one, but the one they had still lost. Johnny didn't know because he didn't know her either. But she was staring at him. Her eyes filled with the same kind of pain that Bob McDill must have been in when he wrote this song. The same kind of pain Keith Whitley had to tap into when he first sang this song. The same kind of pain that Johnny tapped into to sing this song tonight. It was a slow ballad. He dropped to his knees. His six-feet-four, three hundred pound frame touching the stage. His eyes on her. She sang the final lines with him. Not into the microphone. No one else but the people immediately around her could hear her. Johnny couldn't even hear her. But he could see her mouth move in time with his.

"Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight,

And don't close your eyes."

Johnny lowered the microphone. He let his band play the few remaining chords. Beads of sweat rolled down his face -- having escaped the bandana. The top of his chest glistened with the same kind of sweat that Bob Seger used to sing about. The band drifted into silence and the crowd roared with their approval. The scarlet-haired woman applauding loudly. Her eyes on him, but no longer with the same kind of tranfixed gace. The moment was over. The song had been their intimate moment. A shared moment between two strangers. Johnny rose back to his feet.

"I want to thank you all for coming out tonight. It means the world to me. I've spent the last couple of years trying to make sure this album, my first album, was perfect. I wanted it to capture just how I feel about music and I think it does. It's available at the tables off to side of the floor. If you want to pick one up, I'd appreciate it. If you like what you hear, tell your friends, tell your family, tell your radio stations. My name is Johnny Anderson and you've been great."

He let the microphone fall from his hand. His night was done. He was spent. Physically and mentally drained. He had poured everything he had into this performance. Into this night. Hopefully the crowd would buy every copy of "Even The Devil Gets The Blues." Hopefully. He backed away from the edge of the stage. His eyes looked out at the crowd once more. He looked down at where the scarlet-haired woman had been just moments before, but she wasn't there. She had been lost to the crowd. Johnny smiled to himself. He knew that he had reached her. She was going to be buying the album and tonight...that was all that mattered.

Author's Note: I want to thank the incomparable Togg for his graphical work on the album cover. He helped me bring this idea I had to do an album release for someone to reality (at least fictional reality) by creating a look for it. If you haven't, make sure you check out his WCW - Saving the Legacy diary. You won't regret it. Hopefully, you enjoyed this narrative. I wanted to do something different, something that wasn't focused on wrestling per say but still developed a character. Feel free to leave any thoughts.
