Everybody Loves Creepy Clown Guys.

I remember Victoria Corbin Mitchell asking who loves Clowns because it's certainly not children ... or adults. They are just weird. Perfect for wrestling though.

Ha ha. Nice. I definitely agree they’re perfect for wrestling. Heel Doink fascinated me as a kid. And as an adult really. Face Doink... not so much.

It's weird because they are presented as cute and entertaining and yet there is something inherently creepy about them.

Yeah. I wouldn’t say cute though. Their appearance is distorted to make them look strange or even grotesque. Huge red nose, mouth painted to make it looker larger, eyebrows concealed to paint larger ones higher up, etc. All about distorting the features.

Odd Encounters III

Attendance: 276

I gathered everyone for this important occasion. Yes, it was our biggest show to date and traditionally one of our ‘Big Three’ along with SummerSham and Last House but there was another event to recognise. Gregory Chapman, our referee since the very first OWC back in 2016, was turning 48. Not a milestone age by any means but one I felt worth celebrating. With everyone watching Greg opened the cardboard box. In it was a cheap spongecake with bespoke icing that spelled “F*CK OFF” in bright red gloopy letters.

I took the opportunity to give a little speech.

“Greg, thank you for coming to work on your birthday but you won’t be needed tonight. In fact, you won’t be needed any night. You are the only referee we’ve ever had and for that reason, the worst. In full view of everyone here I say this: leave. Leave now and never darken my big top again. This is my circus and if I had a cannon I’d be strapping you in right about now. Now, with that said… anyone for cake?”

Stunned, someone let off a party popper.

* * *

Full of pep I open the show to rant at DISCO Kickuchi. That f*cker caught me lucky with his DISCO punch last month but it wasn’t going to happen again tonight.

“Get your sequined, flared ass out here!”

Oh good, now the Bee Gees are now playing. Man, I hate disco.

Silas Odswald vs DISCO Kikuchi

I take it to the mirrored-shades wearing DISCO giving it all I’ve got. Pulling out my best moves. No, it’s not a dance-off but I suspect I’d come second place in that one as well. Kikuchi, for all the absurdity of his new appearance, is a sound technical wrestler. That said, this one finished the same way as the last one. One mistimed step and I walk into a DISCO punch. Lights out.

I’m not standing for this. I shout to the back for Texas Hangman as I cradle my jaw. Hangman is huge. He’s ready to break DISCO in two... but vaulting the guard rail is… Swipe?? Swipe Romero is standing alongside DISCO Kikuchi and before I can do the math Lois Hudson has called to ring the bell for an impromptu tag match! She’s keen this one.

Silas Odswald and Texas Hangman vs DISCO Kikuchi and Swipe Romero

Mercy be. This is non-stop. Both teams pile in with scant regard for pleasantries like tagging. I am dropped on my head at least once and I think one of Swipe’s kicks took a piece of my ear. Hangman is flailing wildly and I just about avoided getting booted in the face… nope, boot in the face, there I go. I will myself back to my feet and seek out Kickuchi. Ever the opportunist, the Oddlander (Cutter) comes from nowhere… but it’s reversed into a… DISCO punch! Down I go. Referee Lois counts three and I’m done for the second time tonight.

OWC Womens Championship

Asami Okubo (w/ Venus Angeletti) vs Emiko Myoshi vs Betty Dugal vs Mickie Sixx

This is a defining moment in the history of Odswald’s Wrestling Circus. Tonight we introduce a championship for our female wrestlers. This is for all the mothers and daughters, secretaries and nurses, barmaids and flight attendants. Tonight OWC stands with you. History will remember this day… though hopefully not pay too much attention to the match as it sucked (though in truth not that much worse than anything else on the card). All competitors tried hard. Good for them. Asami Okubo made history with a kimura, forcing Betty Dugal to tap at just under the ten minute mark.

Robin DaLay is out next.

“To the peons here in attendance who scraped together enough of their welfare check to afford a ticket, I say shame on you. What you didn’t blow on cigarettes and alcohol you could’ve used to feed your litter of kids back home in Bumpkin, Arkansas. I myself have no concerns, or children for that matter. I want for very little in my rich and successful life. To those of you who can read and have an event program you will see I have offered an open challenge to anyone here in the building. So let’s try and keep the noise down while I show this disgusting town a piece of class for once in it’s sorry existence.”

Oh boy. Robin is on his high horse tonight. And… it’s… Motoyuki Miyake! Miyake stares down DaLay and silently enters the ring. Miyake, the relative newcomer is going after DaLay! I swear one or two people clapped.
Rating: F+

Robin DaLay vs Motoyuki Miyake

The heavyweight versus lightweight. The brawler versus the submission artist. DaLay and Miyake fly into this one and hammer each other with fierce strikes. DaLay takes the advantage with a hefty slam but Miyake fires back with a couple of of suplexes. The bout is not long but the action is non-stop as Robin hoists Miyake up for a Powerslam… Miyake manages to squirm behind and lock in the Katahajime!! It’s in deep! DaLay doesn’t even get chance to tap. It’s over.
Rating: E+

Urban Fox drags the now familiar trash can to the ring. I can see a vinyl copy of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Tusk’ in there. Is nothing sacred? Alright, it’s not their best work but… a level of decency would be appreciated. I mean, ‘Tango In The Night’ yeah, ok. Ahem. Fox stands there in silence. He didn’t bring a microphone but isn’t looking for one either. He rifles through the can and selects a potato masher (the kitchen implement not WW2 German grenade). He stands, masher in hand. As if for no other reason than to end this discomfort, Metallica hits the speakers and Trainwreck appears through the crowd. Beers and Singapore cane in hand.

“Let’s f*cking do this.”

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is on.

OWC Bloodlust Championship

Urban Fox vs Trainwreck – Hardcore match

Both of these guys are insane. There is little to no wrestling as each takes turn to select something from Fox’s trashcan of horrors and smash it over the other’s skull. This war of attrition can only go so long. Fox goes for the toaster but there’s a tug-of-war as Trainwreck also spies the bread warmer. ‘Wreck claws it from his opponents grasp but takes a wooden spatula to the nose and Urban Fox follows it up with a Bulldog onto a Doors boxset. This is the end…

Martyr vs Oniki Hanari & Amok – Handicap match

In what nightmares do you see psychotic clowns stare down a killer in a bloody hockey mask? If you’re just joining us, do not adjust your eyes, this is OWC. Martyr tears at the clowns and quickly succumbs to the numerical disadvantage. This is OWC handicap rules, no tags required, both men of the team are legal. Amok hits a wicked splash and Hanari follows up with a knee drop for a close fall. The clowns are picking their spots. Each time Martyr fights back he is cut off by one or the other. Hanari sinks in a sleeper hold and Referee Lois looks like she is going to call for the bell… but no, Martyr fights out of it and lands a huge haymaker on Hanari. Martyr and Amok brawl and the latter goes for his Amokalypse doublehanded chokeslam… only for Martyr to break his grasp and… HEADBUTT! Amok is staggered. Judgement Slam!! One… Two… Three!!! Martyr is victorious.

Hurakan vs Phobia

The two standouts of OWC’s weak attempt at lucha wrestling have clashed several times before and it is clear that each time they look to out-do the other in a high flying game of brinksmanship. It’s impossible for me to name all the moves but a lot them involve catapulting either themselves or each other. Headscissors. Arm drags. Dives. For a company that rightly gets derided for it’s lack of wrestling, this is a standout match to hit back against our detractors. In a match of the night contender, Hurkan edges it with a Hurakan Roll and takes the three count.

OWC Heavyweight Championship

Seth Whitehead (w/ Clare South) vs Bullseye (w/ Streetz) - Streetfight

And so here we are. Main event time. Whitehead, the champion. Bullseye, the brash young challenger with the motormouth manager. Bullseye blinks first and flies at Whitehead. The pair clash and fall to the outside where they brawl up and down the decrepit bingo hall. This is a Streetfight and Lois Hudson’s participation is to count the pins or submissions, no count outs in this one folks. Bullseye lands a suplex onto the guard rail. Whitehead fights back with a spinebuster through the merch table. This one is non-stop. The fight makes it’s way back to ringside and Streetz catches Seth with a low blow sending him crumpling through the ropes. Bullseye winds up… PPK! Pin Point Knee! (Running Knee Strike). Seth is out. One… two… thr- … NO! Whitehead is still in this one. Bullseye goes for a second PPK… Lariat from the champ! Butterfly Powerbomb! And another! … This one is over. A weary Seth Whitehead retains.
Rating: E

Seth Whitehead hoists the OWC Heavyweight Championship above his head, but from behind it’s Motoyuki Miyake with a heavy shot! Miyake from nowhere! And now Bullseye joins in the beatdown, Streetz directing the abuse. Miyake is throwing suplexes like Whitehead is a rag doll with an ill-advised soul patch. Bullseye and Miyake are stomping Seth Whitehead into the mat… But wait, it’s… it’s…

After the show Seth Whitehead got word to me about Oniji Hanari. He started to make excuses but I cut him off. Not this time. I found Hanari by himself, one of the last left in the locker room. I sat next to him and put an arm round him.

"It's time."

- "You know?"

"We said no more painkillers. We agreed. Can't have you wrestling f*cked up any more. It's time."

- "It is time."

I allowed Hanari the dignity of slipping out while no one was watching. He would leave me a voicemail on my cell in the coming days and actually thank me for firing him. I never returned his call.
