The first two teams eliminated in the tag team gauntlet match have a go at each other to open the show tonight. It's a decent bout that probably could have used a warmup to get the crowd into it, and Unlimited Violence shows some signs of promise. Just as Showtime seemed to be getting a let up in the match, War Diaz and Plague Ryland made their presence known. Alvarez promptly distracted the referee, and Apocalypse laid out both members of Showtime. This let Kipp set up Windham for the Cornered Pump Kick, and a relatively easy victory.</p><p> </p><p>

This match could have gone better, to be honest. It wasn't horrible, and the crowd seemed to get intoit a little bit, but it just suffered from so many deficiencies it would be hard to call it a good match. Marcos slowly took control of the match using questionable but not illegal tactics, and seemed to be preparing for victory when his brother Jose made his way slowly to the ring. They started jawing at each other, allowing Duran to get to her feet. Once Marcos turned around, she caught him and landed the Angel Shocker for the three.</p><p> </p><p>

Slick gets the stick after his match, and says that he's seen that Henry accepted his challenge for a title match. But rather than this back and forth, he thought he'd call out the champ to speak to him directly. He's answered pretty quickly as Henry comes out to the top of the ramp with his own mic. Henry says that it's time they put this whole question to bed. They've been all over the place. Disqualifications. No contests. Triple threats. They've had a Last Man Standing match that saw them both knocked out. A ladder match that proved nothing. They've been dancing around this question for almost two years. So yeah, he wants the match.</p><p> </p><p>

Slick takes over and says that all of that is true. While Henry's gotten a few technical wins, both of them know that he hasn't been able to truly defeat Slick. So, he's proposing something new. A first-time-ever here in W$W. Rather than one fall to a finish with any number of stipulations, let's make this decisive. A 30 Minute Iron Man match. Whoever gets the most falls in thirty minutes proves their better and walks away with the title.</p><p> </p><p>

Henry thinks about that for a long moment. Says that he knows Slick can go the distance in time and still look effective. He says that he KNOWS he has the stamina. Let's do this. He'll see Slick at Christmas Clash.</p><p>

The announcers bill this as Thunder & Lightning wanting to prove they could have defeated Pure Savagery in the gauntlet match if the draws had been slightly different, and had laid down this challenge to prove themselves. This proves to be somewhat worthwhile, as all four men put on a great show, with plenty of back and forth action. Both teams get some time isolating members of the other team, and look good doing it. Things start to break down after a while, as Savage and Lomas get into it outside the ring when the other two are legal. They continue the brawl despite the exhortations of the referee, and eventually get up into the crowd and out the back of the arena. Meanwhile, Reed and Thunder are locked up in the middle of the ring, and without their partners, Reed manages to overwhelm Thunder. He hits the Stealth Crusher, earning his 'team' the victory.</p><p> </p><p>

Apocalypse is backstage, bathed in a dim red light. Famine Faith takes charge, and says that Apocalypse has recentered themselves. They have new clarity in their mission. And they have brought that clarity to their enemies. First, Jason Thunder felt their wrath, and he will feel it again when The Revelation takes the Blue Chip Championship from him. This will be Apocalypse's first claim in the new era. The seals have been broken, and it is written.</p><p> </p><p>

Next, it is perhaps surprising to some that War and Plague have placed their deadly sights on Showtime. But there is a reason for that. Showtime is the epitome of what is wrong with the industry. Wrestlers who rely more on speed and flash than technique and skill. Workers who, thanks to their antics, have a place in the hearts of the fans. So what better place to start the end times than by ripping out the hearts of the fans. So it is that Apocalypse will take down Showtime. They, like Thunder, will not survive.</p><p>

Challenger and champion, half of each, take part in this preview match. McManus and Aroma put on a great show for the crowd here, a clash of styles that works remarkably well. Aroma got the advantage early, using his strength advantage to great effect to slam and control McManus. Riley weathers that storm, however, and manages to counter a big move into a submission. From there, he manages to ground Aroma, and eventually gets him in a cobra clutch that he cannot escape from.</p><p> </p><p>

I vaguely expected this outcome. Huggins doesn't really seem to have 'it' any longer, and his in-ring work suffers a little. The crowd was behind it pretty well, but their performances were just a little...lacking. Sanchez lived up to Money's earlier prediction, and just started beating on Huggins, laying waste with haymaker and uppercuts that rocked Huggins hard. More than once he probably could have gotten the pin, but he didn't even attempt it, and that gave Huggins the slightest of openings. Once he had it, he was able to disorient and distract Sanchez, and eventually managed to hit a Huggins Kiss that got the win.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm ok with this show, for the South East. I know I debated long and hard over whether to put McManus/Aroma or Huggins/Sanchez as the main event. Turns out I chose the wrong one. Still, I'm ok with it. One thing that does bug me, though, is that even though I contracted Huggins as a Gatekeeper with the expectation that he was going to put people over, he doesn't want to lose to anyone. The only loss I've tried to give him that he was ok with was against Henry on the last show. Guess he's just a bit too popular to be doing that and stay happy. I may just job him out and release him. Haven't decided yet.</p><p> </p><p>

McManus continues and says that it's unfortunate, then, that they are facing Allen and McManus, because the title belts are going nowhere. Still, they welcome the challenge, and look forward to the match. They finish with Allen going through the curtain for her warmup match.

A really good match that definitely serves to showcase the upcoming tag title. These two live up to what McManus and Aroma did last week, but with the size differential kicked up another notch. Allen utilizes her technical skills to keep Lindland off his game for a good part of the match, but it eventually takes just one big move to send her reeling and give him control. Lindland earns the victory a bit later with the Phantom Driver.

Eventually, Henry asks the cameraman if they could help them with anything, and there's a stammered no from off screen. After a moment more and a couple of encouraging gestures, the camera eventually moves away from the discussion, leaving the announcers to wonder just what those two are up to.

This eight man tag is a delightful mishmash of brawl and high flight, with plenty of action for even the most jaded fan. That's not to say it's a clean match, because it definitely isn't, and the referee has his hands full keeping control throughout the match. Apocalypse uses all sorts of underhanded tactics to earn advantages for their side, but they can't seem to keep anyone on the face side down. This angers Apocalypse more and more until finally The Revelation drops Blue Phantom to the mat with a hard chair shot despite the referee's admonitions, resulting in an instant disqualifcation.

Revelation continues the assault with the steel chair, and he is quickly joined by every other competitor in the matchup. Unfortunately for the faces, it seems that every member of Apocalypse brings a weapon of some sort. Plague has a kendo stick in his hand. Famine has brought in a sledgehammer. And War has somehow managed to wrap his hands and body in steel chain, and is whipping a free end of it around with abandon. The brawl quickly turns into a beatdown, and before long, all four members of the opposing team has been laid low, with Apocalypse standing tall. They raise hands in celebration for a moment before the lights go out. When they come back on, Apocalypse is gone.

This is a pretty damned good matchup. Orton and Pennyworth obviously don't like each other, and that shows in their performance here. Each of their hits seems to be just a little harder than it needs to be. Each suplex and throw just that tiniest bit more dangerous than it maybe needed to be. And it was all fun to watch. Orton came out fast, but Pennyworth was able to withstand the early offense and slow it down. Unlike Sanchez with Huggins last week, he took his time and used lots of painful looking holds to wear Orton down. And in the end, he wrenched on Orton's neck in an incredibly painful looking Money Clip, and got himself the victory...though even after the bell rang he hung on to the hold for just a little bit longer than he should have, forcing the ref to separate them.

Lomas is seen backstage, walking gingerly and holding an ice pack to his shoulder. He turns a corner and bumps into Savage, who gives him an up and down look before starting to laugh at him. Savage says that it's a wonder Lomas ever thought he might be Openweight Championship material. Savage is ashamed to be spoken of in the same sentance as Lomas as former challengers. Lomas, despite his pain, gets right in his face. He says he earned that shot, and if Savage cares to put it to the test, the two of them can meet at Christmas Crash, and Lomas will show him just what kind of challenger he was. Savage laughs it off, and tells Lomas to watch what he does to Caine in the right right now.

With the announcers telling us that we will indeed be seeing Lomas take on Savage at Christmas Crash, this match turns into a bit of a showcase. Caine tries to put on a show, but Savage is angry and doesn't back down in the slightest. The power and brutality he shows quickly cuts Caine down to size. Despite a couple of crowd-popping comeback attempts from Caine, Savage has this one under control, and he uses the Locked Hate Demolisher for the pinfall victory.

Reed is talented, without a doubt, but Henry is looking ahead to the title match with Cali Slick. Tonight is just a warmup -- a tough warmup to be sure, but it's nothing compared to the REAL main event. Reed tonight is in the wrong place at the wrong time, because Henry isn't here to play around. He's here to win, and save himself for a hard match next week.

This is the best main event we've had in some time, I think. These men gave it their all, and it was a quick and brutal looking match because of that. Both hit all their high spots, both countered the others finisher more than once. Henry would get the win after escaping a German Suplex attempt, and countering it into the Earthquake Powerslam for the three.

The 50th edition of Public Relations, and it's a pretty good one. Still not into the B's on my matches, but I'm happy with this one. I'd say more, but I left writing this for late tonight, and I'm tired...so more for episode 51 tomorrow, maybe.

Neither one of those two men is involved in the decision, however, as the match ends when The Revelation catches Thunder in the Blueprint, which the announcers tell us they have been informed is now called the Seventh Seal.

This was a hell of a match. Reed and Famine tend to fall along the same side of the face/heel divide, but that didn't seem to bother them here. Both men want the victory, and both are letting it all hang out to get it. There's plenty of back and forth action, and neither man gets much of an advantage...at least until Reed thumbs Famine in the eye. Famine goes down like a sack of bricks...and while the referee is admonishing Reed, he gets something handed to him by Plague on the outside. As Famine gets back to his feet, Reed pushes past the referee, and takes a shot from whatever it was (replays showed that it might have been a stone pestle) right into the temple. Reed collapses, Famine tosses the item out of the ring, and makes an academic cover as the referee gets back around.

This is a really good match. Duran spends the entire match giving Jarvis everything she can handle, and actually comes very close to getting a pinfall victory on more than one occasion. She even hits the Angel Breaker once, and the only reason she didn't earn the victory at that point is because Jarvis' heel had slipped below the ropes and the referee wouldn't count the pin. Eventually, though, Jarvis was able to shrug off the punishment, and when she hit the Tornado Elbow Smash, victory was ensured.

Another odd-couple type of preview match, this one featuring two sets of tag teams that will be facing off against one another at Christmas Crash. The crowd really seems to get into this one, and all eight competitors really put on a hell of a show. As always with eight people competing, the referee had trouble maintaining control, and there were numerous instances of double and even triple teams that the crowd really seemed to love. Money got himself involved more than once, and that definitely help give an advantage to his side, despite The Next Big Things getting in his face about it. In the end, absolutely nothing was resolved yet as Pennyworth locked McManus in the Money Clip to earn his side the victory.

Rich Money stays in the ring and is handed a leather folder from someone outside the ring. He says that our final event of the evening is a contract signing between Cali Slick and Ross Henry for their Ironman Openweight Championship match tomorrow night. This match has been a long time coming, and frankly, Money is kind of excited to get this contract signed. So without further ado, he calls out the challenger first. Slick makes his way to the ring with plenty of crowd support. Money then calls out the champion Henry. Henry comes to the ring, and spends some time on each turnbuckle, playing to the crowd with the belt before he finally settles down and takes a seat at the table that had been set up.

Money says that it's obvious that Slick and Henry are on pretty good terms, and he's curious about how they're handling the pressure going into this match. Slick has been wanting this shot for a long time, and Henry is having to defend his belt against one of his best friends in the company. So before they actually sign the contract, let's get some words from each contender. Slick nods, and takes the microphone to speak.

And that's when the lights go out. When they come back on, Money has been laid out in the ring, but Slick and Henry are outside of the ring...and Famine Faith is inside. Before anyone can say anything, Famine grabs a pen and signs the contract that's sitting on the table. He makes a motion for the belt, and then rolls out of the ring and starts walking up the ramp. Henry and Slick get back into the ring, Slick helping Money back to his feet. Henry looks at the signed contract, and laughs. He picks up one of the fallen microphones and calls out to Famine Faith.

Henry says that Famine must think they're fools. Apocalypse has regrouped, and have been assaulting people all month. They've insinuated themselves into the Blue Chip title hunt. They're going after fan favorite tag teams. The only member of Apocalypse who hadn't gotten himself involved in anything was Famine Faith -- and everyone watching knows what his true goal is. The W$W Openweight Championship. Henry and Slick had talked it over. They KNEW Famine would pull some shit like this, so, they did something about it. With no offense to the boss here, they did a little runaround. Henry and Slick actually signed their contract last night in private. With that, he pulls a folded up pack of paper from his back pocket and hands it over to the now standing Money. Slick takes over and says that they talked around, and they got someone who didn't have a match already to volunteer. The contract Famine actually just signed? It's for a match with Kenneth Caine. NOT the title match he thought he was stealing.

Famine, still on the ramp, goes beserk, and starts throwing things before being escorted out. Meanwhile, Henry's music hits, and he and Slick shake hands and celebrate together in the ring for the fans.

Final Thoughts

Man, I've been looking forward to that last angle for quite some time. I knew it would be coming eventually, and the timing finally seemed to work out for it. It makes me happy that it went pretty well, too. Overall, I think this turned out to be a pretty solid month, with just the last supercard of the year to go. Wasn't anything spectacular, but certainly solid. And for once, I actually think I've managed to set up *every* match on the supercard ahead of time with storylines.

The show starts out with a bang, or rather, with the sounding of a bell. Famine Faith makes his way to the ring and starts stalking back and forth, obviously frustrated and angry over having this match at all. When the ring bell is run and the match starts, he lays into Caine with ferocious passion. Caine manages to escape and get a little offense in, only for Famine's anger to power through his offense and take control again. The rest of the match goes back and forth in this same manner, with Caine getting little bursts of offense in before Famine blunts it and returns to the attack. Caine shows great tenacity in kicking out of every pinning predicament that Famine places him in, frustrating the Apocalypse front man even further. Finally, Famine is able to put Caine down for the count, but only by using ring positioning and getting his feet up on the ropes to hold him down. Once the ref raises his arms in victory, Famine walks off, pure disgust showing on his face.

This is another good match to kick us off, honestly better than I had been expecting. There is plenty of back and forth between these two men and the crowd is geting really into it. They are really just getting started again, however, when Famine Faith makes his way back to the ring, still shaking his head in anger. His mere presence is enough to distract Thunder, and the match starts going in Revelation's favor fairly quickly. This lasts a minute or so, before Thunder is able to shake off the distraction and start trying to win again. He is setting Revelation up for the Thunder Struck when Famine makes his presence felt, driving a quick elbow into Thunder's neck as he bounces off the ring. The referee doesn't see it, but it makes Thunder stumble just enough for Revelation to catch him in the Seventh Seal. Thunder fights it for a bit, before he finally taps the title away.

This match was actually hurt by the previous one. I had expected Revelation/Thunder to drop the crowd a little bit, so we'd instructed these guys to try to get them back into it. That obviously didn't work, as the crowd was in a bit of ruckus already. Still, the crowd got behind the match fairly well, with both teams playing the heel well as the match goes on. Huggins earns his team the victory and the series split when he catches Pennyworth with the Huggins Kiss.

This match worked really well, too. The crowd was definitely behind Showtime, putting proof to Apocalypse's claim that they were the W$W's favorite team. At the start, Showtime was able to use their speed to their advantage, working the legs and torsos of the heels. After some time, however, the selling started to fade from Apocalypse, and it eventually stopped altogether, as Plague and War laugh off a couple of hits. With a nod at each other, they level Windham with a double team lariat, and then start isolating Blue Phantom. The sheer power of War and Plague make short work of him, and after a big Bubonic Bomb, Plague heads outside the ring to cut off Windham, and War makes the cover.

They congratulate The Revelation on his title win, and say that tonight, they showed everyone in W$W just what they can do now that they've refocused. Tonight was just the beginning. Plague and War have taken out the darlings of W$W. Famine has destroyed the pretender put in his path, and The Revelation has claimed the Blue Chip Championship. Next month is the Buy-In Tournament, and Apocalypse plans to run all over that...and then, they will take the Openweight and Tag Team belts as well. Apocalypse will rule this company, and there is nothing anyone else can do about it.

A slightly slower-paced match than the last couple, Lomas and Savage take their time. They feel each other out, looking for weaknesses in the other's game. Savage is the first to find one, and he starts overpowering Lomas with some brutal moves. His powerbombs, in particular, seem to be incredibly painful, as Lomas sells them like they're gunshots. Savage continues to attack Lomas, laying in attack after attack. But no matter how much punishment he lays down, Lomas refuses to stay down. Finally, he finds an opening, managing a drop toe hold on the outside of the ring that sends Savage into the ring steps, dazing him. By the time they're back in the ring (just beating the count), neither man really has an advantage. They start trading blows, and eventually Lomas comes out on top of that exchange. A few minutes later, he hits an Exploder, and gets the pinfall.

Lindland must have had the flu or something, because he was visibly off his game today. And that may have prevented this from being a classic. As it was, this was a very good match that the crowd truly enjoyed. There was plenty of action, plenty of high spots, and plenty of 'wow' moments. Eventually, Allen would get the defense for her team when she amazingly got Aroma up and over with a Northern Lights Suplex.

30 Minute Iron Man Match for the W$W Openweight Championship Match

The match starts with a handshake, as the two men show respect for one another. After that, there's no feeling out process at all, as they just lock up in a collar and elbow and go at it. There's plenty of offense from both men, but Henry gets the advantage after a bit of time. He uses it to good effect, wearing down Slick's arms and neck with hard hitting blows, and around the nine minute mark, he plants the challenger with an Earthquake Powerslam that's good enough to get a three count, giving him a one fall to none advantage.

After a short recovery period, the two lock up again, with Henry trying for another quick Earthquake Powerslam to cement his lead. Slick, very familiar with the champion, manages to not only wriggle out of it, but send Henry into a corner post. This gives Slick a bit more of a breather, and when Henry is back on his feet, the match is much more even. There's lots of back and forth, but neither man is able to get a fall (despite both an Earthquake Powerslam and a Slick-Back being hit) until around the 21 minute mark, when Slick manages to tie up Henry with a figure four. Henry doesn't even try to fight it, just taps out immediately, tying the match. As the recovery period passes, he gives a nod to Slick in a congratulatory fashion.

Then they lock up again. This time, neither man holds back at all. They throw the kitchen sink at each other. They throw haymakers and piledrivers. Then, around 26 minutes, Slick suprises Henry with a Slick-Back. He's almost exhausted at that point, and basically falls on the champion, but it's enough to get the three count and a 2-1 lead for the challenger.

With about three minutes left and his title in the balance, Henry goes all-out on the attack, overwhelming Slick with a series of maneuvers that ends in an Earthquake Powerslam. Slick appears to have been practically knocked out by the move this time, and Henry dives on him for the cover...only for the bell to ring to end the match before the referee can get into position. Henry basically collapses on top of Slick for a long moment in disappointment, then checking with the referee that the cover didn't count. Then, nodding his head and clapping, he heads out of the arena while Slick is given his title belt.

And that's 2028 for you. A nice solid show to round out the year. I really thought a couple of those matches might end up in the B's, but I'll take what I can get. Really, only one match tonight truly disappointed, and I'll take it.

My original plan was to give TNBT the title here, but Revelation and Slick felt more imporant to me, and I didn't want all three titles changing hands on the same show. So, they'll have to wait some more. Who knows...maybe plans will change again. Next up...the tournament.

Money welcomes everyone to the backroom of Greenback Arena, where we are looking to set up the Buy-In Tournament for 2029. He says that this year we are staying in-house, and we have identified sixteen worthy competitors to take part in this years tournament to try to earn themselves a called shot. He points out that this year he is declaring that all cash-ins of the called shot must be declared at least 24 hours ahead of time, and the champion cannot have another match on the card in which the called shot is used. No more shenanigans like we had last year.

This year, we are moving away from the single elimination format, and embracing the World Cup style format. We will have four groups of four competitors. Each group will undergo a round-robin tournament, and the top two from each group will move on to a final eight person single elimination bracket to take place entirely at IPO 2029. These round robin matches will consist of 15-minute time limit matches. Each competitor will earn 2 points for a victory, and 1 point for a draw. Should a tiebreaker be needed, total time will be used, first in wins, then in losses.

The groups will be randomly decided with some caveats. Famine Faith, as last year's winner, will be automatically placed in Group A. The remaining fifteen competitors have been placed in a random order, and will be placed in a group randomly when their turn comes up. No competitor will be placed in a group with a tag team or stable partner unless there is no other choice when their turn comes up.

Finally, the bracket is preset; the winner of Group A will face off against the 2nd place finisher in Group D in the first round. Sharing that side of the bracket, the winner of Group B will meet the 2nd place of Group C. On the other side, the winner of group C will take on 2nd place in Group A, and the winner of group D will face off against the second place finisher in group B.

One final point to make before we draw the groups -- no interference will be accepted in this years matches. If any interference is detected (per an outside, neutral arbiter), the person interfering in the match will be suspended from all W$W competition for at least one month.

Now, on to the groups. As stated before, Famine Faith starts out group A. The rest of the draw, done live, pans out like this:

To start off, Pennyworth faces off against Shadrach. Shadrach has looked decent thus far, and he looks like a big threat, but his lack of experience certainly gets showcased here. Pennyworth wrestles circles around the bigger man, absorbing what little offense Shadrach is able to put out, and eventually locks on the Money Clip for the submission victory and the early lead in the tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

Money's second charge gets his 'warm-up' match as the announcers (or perhaps more specifically Ditterich) make a big fuss about how he's showing favoritism towards his boys. This is a pretty good match in which Sanchez dominates the early going, and it looks like he's going to take home an easy win -- but Duran just won't stay down. Money gets in the referee's face after a long two count that doesn't quite reach three, but the referee is adamant about his choice, and the match continues. The breather from Money's argument apparently allowed Duran to gather herself, because afterwards, she is basically on fire. She throws herself into the competition, and despite Money's attempted involvement again, she takes the big man down once, twice, and a third time. Sanchez staggers back to his feet, gets caught by Duran, who barely manages to get him off his feet and hit the Angel Shocker for the surprise win, to Money's dismay.</p><p> </p><p>

He says that Slick may be the champ, but that's a distinction he's not going to hold for long, if Reed has anything to say about it. He wants a shot at the title come IPO. Before Slick can even get a chance to speak, Huggins steps into view. He asks if he really just heard what he thinks he heard? Because there's only one man here who's been anywhere near the real top of the business, and that's Huggins. And since he's gotta slum it in this wannabe company right now, he might as well be holding the gold. So, Reed better step back, because Huggins is gonna be the champ. Slick just smiles at them, says he'll think about their proposals, and walks out.</p><p>

Our main event of the evening was everything it was meant to be and more. Caine and Savage are both still relative newcomers to the sport, but both seem to have sky-high potentials, and this match showcased that to good effect. There was plenty of offense from both guys, though not so much in the way of counters and defense. Mostly, they just took the other's hits and tried to recover quickly enough to hit a move of their own. That pattern fairly quickly turned in Savage's favor as Caine just took punishing move after punishing move. The Locked Hate Demolisher looked to end it, but Caine kicked out...of the first one. Not so much the second.</p><p> </p><p>

This was a really good show, especially for the Great Lakes. We're working our way up the popularity levels there; 1400 is a pretty good crowd. Not quite at the 'making money' level yet, we still are down almost 16k for the show, but we're getting there. And a good start to the tournament -- I kind of meant to have a Money promo to start it off, talking about how good his boys were going to do, but I think it worked out just putting that in the action and in the announcer's hands.</p><p> </p><p>

And yes, I know the time limit draws are going to be a little more common than they have been. I'm putting that on the fact that in my head, most matches have had a 30 minute time limit, so it's rarely met...and the prize for the tournament is so big that it makes the competitors draw on their reserves a little more to extend the matches. I think it'll work out.</p><p> </p><p>

Eventually, Orton managed to get Sanchez into a triangle choke, but was so pissed off that he ignored the referee's warnings, and eventually got disqualified.

This was a pretty fun, if short, match. Duran put up a fight, hoping that she was going to see a Cinderella story in this tournament, but War basically no-sold her offense every time with a small grin. After she actually managed to stagger him briefly with a drop-toe hold into the corner, he came out in a rage, and shortly thereafter hit the move formerly known as the Asian Thumb Spike, but recently renamed the Sun Tzu Spike. Duran went down, and War made a cocky cover that was good enough for the win.

He finally leaves Slick down and out after a Huggins Kiss, raises the title belt with a dangerous glint in his eyes, and then tosses onto the unconcious Slick and walks away.

This was a pretty good match by all accounts. Lomas took the fight to Pennyworth early, knowing that Money would probably get involved, and tried to get an early win. Pennyworth would kick out of numerous pinning predicaments as Lomas dominated the first half of the match. Slowly, though, Pennyworth was able to slow down the pace, and eventually got Lomas into a seated neck hold that really blunted his momentum. Knowing that time was no longer on his side, Pennyworth started working the neck hard, with legal holds and not-so-legal moves. At around thirteen and a half minutes, Pennyworth actually got Lomas into the Money Clip in the center of the ring. Lomas screamed in anguish and squirmed, but refused to give up, and eventually threw Pennyworth off balance enough to escape the Clip...but there was no more time for any offense, as the bell rang to end the match.

Leaving through the curtain, Lomas basically runs into Savage. Savage says that it's pathetic that Lomas couldn't even beat the boss's pretty boy project, and tells him to watch this next match. Savage will show Lomas how it's done. Pushing through the curtain, Savage walks away, leaving Lomas to shake his head and give a disgusted look.

Turns out this match wasn't quite as eash as Savage thought it might be. McManus puts up a hell of a fight, and gets Savage into trouble multiple times, but the big man is able to get out of it each time. McManus, on a roll, perhaps foolishly tried to go for a big powerbomb, but Savage countered with ease, and turned it into a Locked Hate Demolisher, which was enough for the victory.

This was a good match to end the show on. Both competitors put their heart and soul into the match, and it showed. There was no backing down, no slowing down, just fifteen minutes of pure adrenaline and action. Allen is the superior technician, but Henry isn't too shabby on his own, and they manage to go hold for hold for much of the match. Henry breaks out of at least three Northern Lights Suplexes. Allen avoids the Earthquake Powerslam. With both competitors quickly tiring, Allen goes for a desperation move, but slams into the corner post and rolls out of the ring. Henry follows her, but is just too tired to get her back into the ring, and the bell rings to end the match in a draw.

Final Thoughts

A C- in the South East? I'll take it. Henry wasn't really happy about the draw with Allen, but I managed to smooth things over a bit. He eventually took it, and was at least verbally ok. I don't know how he really feels, of course, but I think he'll be ok.

Not a horrible start to the main show. Plague and Caine put on a show that the North Carolina crowd ate up, giving them a rocking good time. Caine looks pretty strong, seemingly gaining confidence as the match goes on...and then Plague hits a Bring Out Your Dead (a new move he debuts here; essentially a top-rope destroyer) that absolutely lays Caine out. This victory puts Caine at least 3 points down with only one match left, and eliminates him from the tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

Reed asks him what he's thinking. Says that Slick better not be thinking what Reed thinks he is. Because if he is...Reed isn't going to be able to let that go. Slick thinks for a moment, and turns back to the camera, and says that he's here to tell everyone that...that he's still trying to decide which challenger would make for the better match. He walks off holding his shoulder, where Huggins focused his attack a week ago. Reed stares after him for a moment, before walking out the other direction.</p><p>

This was a nice technical affair, with Allen and Revelation both falling back on their extensive backgrounds. The crowd got behind it, perhaps more than I was expecting. Revelation fed off the crowd that's been watching him for years, and came out of this match looking really good, and at one point locked on the Seventh Seal, but Allen managed to get one foot under the ropes to force the break. Not too long afterwards, Allen reversed the momentum, and soon after hit the Northern Lights Suplex for the win -- and managing to eliminate Revelation from the overall tournament, as he can no longer reach the top 2 in his group.</p><p> </p><p>

Huggins gets visibly pissed off, and starts attacking Reed, but before the two of them can really get into it, they're physically separated by a host of backstage staff.</p><p>

This match did not go quite as I had hoped. Everything was in place, both competitors did a good job, and Money was great at ringside (even getting involved once or twice despite his own prohibition against such tactics). But something about it just didn't go as planned. It was good enough, but it wasn't the top-level match I'd hoped it would be. Famine earns the victory, using his newly revamped Leap of Faith, now named the Descent Into Darkness, which was just enough to put Pennyworth down for three to Money's dismay. And though the points indicate Pennyworth still has a shot, he has already lost the tiebreaker to Lomas, so he is now eliminated from Group A, leaving Famine and Lomas to advance to IPO2029.</p><p> </p><p>

And in a third straight match that didn't meet my expectations, this one was fast paced, and Orton just couldn't keep up. He seemed lost more than once, and was definitely tiring by the time the match ended. Both men looked ok, with War coming out looking a little bit better -- but looking better didn't translate to a win, as Orton caught him by surprise with a Winning Palm Strike that did, indeed, earn Orton the win. War was back on his feet moments after the match ended looking pissed, but he just stared down at Orton, seeming to consider something before he walked out nodding to himself.</p><p> </p><p>

A good start to the last show of the round robin. Caine has already been eliminated and is trying to play spoiler; McManus has to win and win quickly and get help later in the evening to be able to advance. As such, he comes out of the bell fast and furious, really taking the fight to Caine. But the high pace causes him to make mistakes, and bit by bit, Caine is able to turn those mistakes against McManus. This turns into a full momentum shift, and finally, the Lion Knee gives Caine the victory to avoid the shutout.

This is the final match of group B, and Jarvis finds herself in the same position as McManus one match ago. She tries a slower, more methodical approach, but that plays into Revelation's strengths as well. Even worse, he's more stealthy when it comes to taking shortcuts, and a couple of thumbs to the eye early on give him a huge advantage, and it's one that Jarvis is never able to overcome. Revelation eventually locks her in the Seventh Seal, earning himself a victory and cementing his group's standings with her on the outside of the bracket. This was easily one of Revelations biggest wins in his career here in W$W as well, and he looks supremely satisfied as the bell rings.

Money says that since Revelation is out of the bracket at IPO and he's the Blue Chip Champion, he should be defending that belt. But, Money isn't going to make it too difficult of a test--after all, he's just been through three grueling matches in four weeks. So, at IPO, The Revelation will be defending the Blue Chip Championship against Shooting Star Perez.

Group D is the most open coming into this matchup, but coming into this match, these two competitors are on the outside looking in thanks to tiebreakers. That said, a win here for either competitor guarantees they will advance, while a draw eliminates Duran and forces Orton to wait for the other group match later tonight. There were high stakes, and both competitors took this match very seriously. There was a long feeling out process before they finally kicked things into high gear around the 5 minute mark. From there, they traded offense in fast and furious exchanges that would more often than not leave both competitors gasping for air on opposite sides of the ring. Once the ten minute mark passed, they started trying for pins that wouldn't work, and around thirteen minutes both of them started trying anything to get it to stick. It didn't matter, though, because we hit the fifteen minute mark without a pinfall or submission, forcing everyone to wait until the next match to figure out who would complete the Group D bracket.

With the draw in the previous match, War and Sanchez are both in the situation that they just have to avoid a loss to advance in the tournament. In fact, there seems to be a bit of an argument between Money and Sanchez at the outset as Money is trying to convince Sanchez to try for that route, but Sanchez want's the first place spot instead. War makes the argument moot by betting bored of waiting and starting the action, and from there, it's on. These two large men brawl all over the ringside area, where War finds himself at an unaccustomed size and strength disadvantage, and Sanchez quite often makes him pay. Numerous times one man or the other has to break the referee's count as much of this fight takes place outside the ring, but around the twelve minute mark they make it back in. The finish itself is quite spectacular, all things considered, as War hits the Sun Tzu Spike whilst Sanchez has him up for a vertical suplex. The move practically knocks Sanchez out, but he doesn't lose his grip on War until they've hit the ground, making War take the full brunt of the suplex. With both men down on the ground, the referee starts his ten count, only to have the bell ring for the time limit draw. This gives both men an advancement, with War claiming the #1 spot due to tiebreakers.

With McManus' loss earlier, both of these men have already advanced to the single-elimination bracket at IPO, but the easier draw and bragging rights still rests on who can win this match. And what a match it is -- quite literally W$W's best match in over a year. These two had great chemistry, and really played off each other with every move. They seemed to know what the other was thinking almost without thought, and it made for an incredible match to watch. Plague did a great job of keeping Savage on the defensive, and using his own underhanded tactics and deceptive speed to keep Savage off balance. That is, until he didn't. Savage exploded out of the corner with an incredible spear, and took full control almost instantly, eventually almost knocking Plague out with a huge Locked Hate Demolisher for the victory and clean sweep of his group.

And the round robin ends where it began, with a Group A match. Lomas and Famine have both guaranteed an advance, but this renewal of their recent rivalry would give the winner incredible bragging rights. Lomas came out on the top of their fued, and that obviously didn't sit well with Famine, who game out with an intensity we haven't seen from him for a while. The first seven or eight minutes of the match was all Famine, as he absolutely dominated Lomas and it looked like he was going to cruise to an easy win. But then, Lomas kicked out of a fairly typical pinfall. Then, Famine hit him with a Faith Falls Eternal, and Lomas kicked out of that. That was followed up with a Descent Into Darkness, but Lomas got out of the way, and managed to go on the attack for the first time. Famine was dazed from the missed move, and Lomas got some good hits in, eventually hitting the Thunder Struck...but he was too exhausted to even crawl over to Famine to make the cover. When both men got back to their feet, they started trading blows, and Famine managed to back Lomas into the corner...only for the bell to ring ending the match. This technically put Famine on top, as he earns the #1 spot in the group, but neither man looked truly satisfied with the outcome.

Final Thoughts

Ok. So. Thoughts on the tournament as a whole. It took me a while to get a schedule that worked and got six matches on every show while not overbooking anyone. It didn't help that there were certain matches that I wanted to main event every show, and I wanted to start with Pennyworth/Shadrach and end with Famine/Lomas. I finally just made a set of generic matchups, mixed and matched them, and then assigned the workers based on which show I wanted their group to main event. With the wins/losses decided previous to that, I think it made for some awkward shows -- this one, for instance, had three draws. I also think I leaned on the draws a little too much, but that single point was useful to shift standings a little. It also worked out that the winning tiebreakers for Group, where I wanted Duran to have a good showing but not win, and War and Sanchez to advance, ended up being on the same show.

To add to all of that, with six matches for the tournament on each show, and up to 17 minutes taken up for each one in 90 minute shows...well, that didn't leave a lot of time to build up anything else. I managed to shoehorn in a couple things, but it was all done in basically verbal segments for the most part. Some things that might have worked better would be 10 minute matches instead of fifteen; that would give up to 30 more minutes per show (and that's another match or two) and make the time limit draws more in line with what we've done previously.

To top that all off, I haven't yet simmed IPO, and I'm second guessing myself on the bracket results. I know where I want a couple of stories to go, and I'm not sure the bracket I was planning works the best for that. Guess I'll figure it out soon.

INCREDIBLE PUBLIC ONSLAUGHT 2029 PREVIEW

W$W returns to Greenback Arena to finish their annual Buy-In Tournament with a bang. The Round-Robin has completed, and the top two in every group has advanced to a single elimination bracket, which can be seen below. Right from the start, we have some incredible matchups, as Micheal Savage and Lightning Lomas meet again -- Savage is undefeated thus far in the tournament, but Lomas got a shock win against him at Christmas Chaos. Ross Henry tries to return to form, but he is taking on Plague Ryland, one of three members of Apocalypse who start out this bracket. The others are Famine Faith, who faces off against Rich Money's client Joaquin Sanchez; and War Diaz, who must face the gifted technical wrestler and W$W Tag Team co-champion Amber Allen.

And we have two belts up for grabs as well. First, Apocalypse's final member and only title holder at the moment, The Revelation, is defending his Blue Chip Championship against Shooting Star Perez. Perez is an incredibly gifted youngster who just may surprise the veteran Revelation. Then Cali Slick defends his Openweight belt against not one but two men as both Roger Reed and Freddy Huggins try to lay their claim on the gold. We kick off the show with a great match. Allen and War showcase some decent chemistry, and play off each other really well. There's lots of offense, and the crowd really starts getting into it. War looks like he might have the match in the bag, but Allen slides out of a Sun Tsu Spike attempt, and starts working on War's legs. She gets the bigger man off his feet and down to the ground, and is able to cap it off with a Northern Lights Suplex, giving her a bit of an upset in the opening match.

This is not a horrible match, but Famine seemed distracted through most of it, and mostly just went through the motions. From there, he quickly gained momentum, and when he capped it off with a Descent Into Darkness, it seemed like it was an inevitable outcome.

This was a good match that maybe went a little too long. Plague and Henry matched up well, and there was plenty of back and forth action, but both men were getting tired before it ended -- which doesn't bode well for the winner having possibly two more matches tonight. As the match passed the fifteen minute mark, however, the announcers were able to talk about the fact that this would have been a draw in the round robin, but there are no time limits here tonight...so Henry can't be hurt by the bell tonight. It isn't long after that that he is finally able to catch Plague and get him up to hit the Earthquake Powerslam, advancing Henry in the tournament.

Another match that would have gone to a time limit draw in the round robin, this was nevertheless a fun watch. Unfortunately, it seemed that both Savage and Lomas were a bit off their game in this matchup; something in the water perhaps? It was a good match that had Lomas getting much more offense than Savage would have liked, even planting Savage with the Thunder Struck once. Savage was able to roll out of the ring before Lomas could make the cover, however, and survived to fight some more. The back and forth continued, but after getting hit by Lomas' finisher, Savage seemed to find another gear, and Lomas was hard pressed just to keep up with him. And then, just to try to keep his feet. A couple more minutes of the savage aggression resulted in a Locked Hate Demolisher, and Lomas' tournament hopes disappeared.

This is potentially a number one contenders matchup, though neither W$W officials nor the Tag Team champions have said anything of yet to make it official. This turns out to be a pretty good match, with Showtime keeping up with TNBT for most of the offense. Neither team is able to isolate a member of the other to wear them down effectively, leaving quick tags on both sides with some fast and furious offense that gives nobody any momentum. That is, until around the ten minute mark, when a low bridge sent Blue Phantom out of the ring. Lindland went inside to confer with Aroma, the active man, which unfortunately drew the referee's attention; this let Plague and War come out of the shadows and attack Showtime, leaving Phantom a crumpled heap outside the ring, and Windham rolled inside the ring just as devastated. Apocalypse quickly vanishes, and when the referee restores order with Lindland getting back out of the ring, nobody was the wiser. Aroma looked around confused at the seemingly unconcious Windham laying in the ring, but as he hadn't seen the attack he went back on the offense. A couple moments later, the Cracked Facebreaker gave his team the somewhat tainted victory.

Slick's on his first championship, and had to luck out with the clock to earn it. With Henry focused on the tournament, that leaves the door wide open, and there's only one person who is going to walk through it. Roger Reed. It is time for a new champion, a real champion.

The semifinals begin with this bit of a blast from the past. Famine and Henry lock up and start trading offense, but Famine continues to look distracted as he did in his first match. Henry is obviously still a bit fatigued from his first incredibly long match, and Famine is able to take advantage of that, but after putting Henry down with a painful looking DDT, Famine doesn't bother to cover. He just stares down at Henry before rolling out of the ring. He walks around the ring for a while, looking like he was talking to himself. Finally, he nods, as if he had come to a decision. Henry was just getting back to his feet, so Famine takes his time. He grabs a steel chair, folds it, tests it, and rolls back into the ring. The referee is yelling at him, but Famine just stares him down and plants the chair on Henry's head, dropping the former Openweight Champion to the ground in a heap. As the bell rings, Famine raises the chair in victory, an evil smile rolling across his face.

Famine brings the chair down on Henry's back once more, and he is quickly joined by the rest of Apocalypse. They spend a little bit of time kicking Henry while he's down before Money's music hits, and the boss comes out to the ramp with fury on his face. He has a microphone and asks what the hell Apocalypse thinks they're doing. The rules were clear -- anyone who interferes spends a month out of action.

Famine interrupts him and says that yes, the rules were clear. But the match was over, so what he and his companions have done was perfectly justified. But there's more. They'll keep doing this, unless Money gives them what they want. Famine knows that Money wants this tournament to go ahead. He knows that there's an Openweight title match to fight still. But none of that is going to happen unless Money agrees to Famine's terms. Those terms are simple...Famine has realized that this whole tournament, the Buy-In Tournament, is a waste of time. Why try to earn a called shot when there's an Openweight title match here tonight? Henry is no longer the champion, so Famine is again eligible to fight for the title. So, plain and simple. Money adds Famine Faith to the W$W Openweight Championship match tonight...or Apocalypse stays in the ring, keeps beating on Henry, and this show ends here and now.

Money looks supremely frustrated. He obviously doesn't want to give Apocalypse anything. But as War and Plague pick up Henry and set him up for a Bubonic Bomb, he capitulates. He says that it's fine. Famine's in the match, which is now a fatal four-way. Just...don't hurt the competitors in the tournament any more. Famine smiles and says that's all he wanted. Apocalypse joins hands in celebration, and walk out of the ringside area as Money fumes on the ramp.

Allen and Savage both come into this match with the knowledge that whoever wins this will go on to face a beaten and exhausted Ross Henry for the tournament championship and the called shot that accompanies it. And they act accordingly, with both of them out of the gate in a fast paced and highly aggressive match. Allen is riding the underdog wave, and makes use of Savage's less rested state, bringing the big man down and working him over to try to reduce his effectiveness even more. But when she tries for the Northern Lights Suplex, he literally powers out of the move, sending Allen out of the ring. Savage is visibly done with his opponent, and he drags her back into the ring by her hair (earning an adominshment from the referee), and hits two powerbombs and a choke slam before planting her for good with the Locked Hate Demolisher. Savage advances to the finals to face off against Ross Henry.

Freddy Huggins can pin Roger Reed, or Reed can tap out Huggins. He knows this, and he's ready for the fight. He's confident he's going to come out on top. But now there's this curve ball. The title match is no longer a triple threat like he's called for and planned for. Now, it's a fatal four way. Famine Faith is joining in the crowd. And now, Slick is at even more of a disadvantage. Or is he? See, the way Slick sees it, there's now three other men in the ring that can go down to the Slick-Back...and Famine's already gone through two other matches tonight. Huggins is entirely too over-confident. And Reed...Reed doesn't believe in Slick. He's the ultimate underdog here tonight. And everyone knows that in these times, the underdog can surprise you. Stay tuned.

As the four men jockey for position before the opening bell, it becomes clear that Slick, Reed, and Huggins have all painted a target on the more fatigued Famine Faith. But when the bell actually rings, Famine quickly rolls out of the ring, and grabs a chair. Realizing that he can use it as a weapon all he wants in this fight, the trio take the better part of valor and turn on each other. While they trade moves in the ring, Famine stalks around the ring outside, watching for his moment. The first one comes when Huggins is sent outside by a double-team move between Reed and Slick; Famine quickly closes on him and sends him into the ring steps before returning his attention to the ring. When Reed gets Slick down in a pinning attempt, Famine quickly slides in, breaks up the pin, and is back out of the ring before Reed can grab him.

The match progresses in this way. Famine stalks the outside, taking pains to further hurt anyone sent outside while keeping the others away from him with threats of weaponry and violence, while preventing any pinfalls or submissions on the inside. Slick is the first to get annoyed by this, and after planting Huggins with a Slick-Back, he goes for the cover but immediately gets back up to cut Famine off at the pass. Unfortunately for him, Famine rolled right back out, but the distraction was enough for Reed to press an attack. Famine plays to the crowd, pointing to his head showing his superiour intelligence as the fight continues.

The ending comes with a fast run of moves. Huggins hit's Reed with the Huggins Kiss, but before he can make the pinfall, Slick catches him with the Slick-Back. Slick goes for the cover as Famine starts to slide in the ring, but Reed is up already, and Reed plants him with a Stealth Crusher. But before HE can make the cover, Famine had climbed the turnbuckle, and Reed is absolutely leveled by a Descent Into Darkness. With Huggins and Slick both recovering, Famine holds on to Reed and gets the 1-2-3.

Finals of the 2029 Buy-In Tournament

The announcers put over the fact that this fight is in fact a rematch of the finals from the 2027 Buy-In Tournament. In that match, Henry came out on top, but he wasn't eligible to be in the tournament last year as he was the Openweight Champion at the time. Both of these men come into this match already fatigued from earlier matches, and it definitely hurts the match some, but I think it came out decent nonetheless. Henry plays up his earlier beatdown, and though he gets in some good offense, it's obvious that Savage is the fresher man here in this match. That said, when Savage goes for the Locked Hate Demolisher, and Henry is able to turn it into an Earthquake Powerslam, the crowd goes absolutely crazy. Unfortunately for Henry, he collapses in a heap after hitting the move, and is competely unable to make the cover. Both men get to their feet at around the same time, and start trading punches, and it's Savage who comes out on top of that exchange. He whips Henry into the ring ropes, and this time when he goes for the Locked Hate Demolisher, it hits, and Henry is just too exhausted to kick out. Savage appears to be equally exhausted, but is your winner of the 2029 Buy-In Tournament.

Final Thoughts

OK. So. The tournament bracket actually ended up going exactly how I had planned. Everyone who I originally had winning won, and Savage was my planned winner. What did end up changing from my initial thought was the whole Apocalypse angle. I knew I wanted Famine into the title picture right away, and I was thinking that he was going to lose the tournament and then try to insert himself, but it just didn't feel right. Especially with War and Plague both losing their first round matches, it felt like Apocalypse looked weak, and so soon after their 'recentering' that didn't feel right. Then, I realized...why would he wait until February? There's a title match right here tonight...and I could totally see him putting himself in there. He wouldn't give it up against Sanchez (though I *did* consider that), but choosing to lose against Henry, and use him as an example and hostage? That works. That also gives Henry an excuse, a reason for losing the finals that gives him a real loss (really, only his third singles loss in W$W) while still keeping him looking good. It felt right, so that's what happened. And to keep up with Apocalypse looking strong, Famine comes out with the title. I wasn't really happy with Slick losing on his first defense, but he can have a bit of a back and forth with Famine now, and that story can last some time. All in all, I'm pleased with the booking here.
