NYCW: The Ultimate Throwback

NYCW: The Ultimate ThrowbackUnashamedly Old School

Welcome to the the 2010s – a decade with no name. Defined in part by 'Neo-nostalgia', thanks to the throwback Thursdays, flashback Fridays and other nostalgia-filled rhetoric that punctuates the language of a generation looking to find comfort in the familiar.

90's re-runs continue to dominate the viewing figures, while hours upon hours are spent every day scrolling through old photos and status updates on social media – platforms that encourage you to look back on your life and curate a 'greatist hits' catalogue for you.

Nostalgia is now big business, and can pop up in the most surprising of places. If you'd told a wrestling fan back in 1988 that that new promotion running out of New York would have still been running in 2016, they'd have told you that you were crazy. The product was at least a decade out of date in 1988, nad yet NYCW entered 2016 promoting exactly the same product and found themselves uniquely placed among the smaller promotions.

USPW had managed to tap into the nostalgic fuelled Millenials to become the #1 wrestling promotion in the world. Could NYCW 1970's product really tap into that sense of nostalgia and draw in an entirely new, younger generation of fans? Or would an ageing roster prove a step to far? Only time would tell, but it felt like NYCW entered it's 29th year with a few more eyes watching than it had in the past.

An intriguing beginning that really rings true to our culture. I’m interested in seeing how you handle the imminent departure of Roger Cage to USPW. I’ll be following.

The exact two things I came on to say! Will be following

Thank you both for your comments. Glad to have you both on board. It's been a long time since I've had the bug to write, so I'm looking forward to getting into this. I have some fun ideas for this diary that I hope will be enjoyable to read.

I've run the first few shows for this already, so expect the first card to be posted up tonight.

NYCW Presents Rush Hour

Live from The Ministry

Saturday W2 January 2016

NYCW look to kick off 2016 with a bang, with every title being defended at 'Rush Hour'. Roger Cage and Honest Frank look to settle once and for all who truly is the greatest Empire champion in NYCW history. Roger Cage has had the edge over Honest Frank over the past few months, but you can never count out the crafty veteran who always seems to have something up his sleeve.

The Ring Generals defend the COTT World Tag Team Championships on NYCW for the first time since winning them in August. The Old School Principles have called The Ring Generals 'paper champions', stating that the OSP have done far more for the territories than The Ring Generals could ever hope to achieve. Can the veterans overcome the Ring Generals and become the third holders of the COTT World Tag Team Champions?

The NYCW Tag Team Titles are also on the line, as the Canadian wild men 'The Boys From Yukon' challenge The Southern Stars for the belts. With Animal Harker having a wild streak of his own, this one threatens to descend into chaos. Can The Southern Stars retain control, or can The Boys Of Yukon regain the titles they lost back in July?

The rest of the card also sees Crockett Tubbs defend his title against high energy punk rocker 'The New York Doll', while old favourites such as Steve Flash, Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Man Mountain Cahill are all in action. Be sure not to miss out on what promises to be a great night of pro-wrestling!

I can imagine you'd feel more comfortable knowing your main champ isn't about to lose you. Although if you can keep Cage for a few months I suppose you might stick with him

NYCW Rush Hour

Live from The Ministry

Saturday, Week 2, January 2016

Audience: 1,000 (SELL OUT!)

Announce Team:

Rock Downpour & Ernie Turner

Rock Downpour
and
Ernie Turner
welcome us to 'Rush Hour' with the sad news that tonight will be Roger Cage's last night with the company. They confirm that Cage will defend his Empire title tonight against Honest Frank. The commentators recap the two wrestlers arguments over the past few weeks over who is the greatest Empire champion of all time.

The show kicks off with the Empire Champion, Roger Cage, making his way down to the ring while “Thank you, Roger” and “You Deserve It” chants breaking out in the crowd. Roger thanks the crowd and begins to reminisce on his time in NYCW and how it heped him become the wrestler he is today. Cage talks about his pride at holding the Empire title, and being a three-time Empire champion.

Unfortunately Cage's thank you speech to the fans is interrupted at this point by Honest Frank. Frank reminds Cage that there were a number of three time Empire champions before Roger Cage, including himself, but never a four time champion... at least not yet. Frank tells Cage that while he could wait until Cage is stripped of the title and make history next month, he'd prefer to see the look on Cage's face when he pins him in the middle of this ring tonight to become the first, and only, four time Empire champion in NYCW history. Because while Cage may be good, Honest Frank is the greatest champion in NYCW history, and that's the “honest truth.”

In-ring confrontation

Involved: Roger Cage, Honest Frank

Rock Downpour:
“Two of the all time greats here in NYCW going at it one last time tonight! Who will prove once and for all that they are the greatest Empire champion?”

Ernie Turner:
“I'm hoping we see Roger Cage go out on a high, but you've always got to be wary of Honest Frank... that boy always has somethin up his sleeve.”

  • The New York Doll came out like a train for this one, his high energy, aggressive style overwhelming the champion in the early stages.

  • A ball of energy and adrenaline, as he has done so many times before New York Doll went for one move too many and crashed and burned.

  • Crockett Tubbs didn't need a second invitation, and immediately swamped New York Doll and took him to the mat.

  • Dubdued, The New York Doll could never recovered his earlier momentum and the champion was able to lock in the Subway STF for the victory.

NYCW Tri-State Regional Title

Rock Downpour:
“Crockett Tubbs retains in another impressive showing!”

Ernie Turner:
“That boys looked mighty impressive since he came back down from Canada. New York Doll came out hot, but Tubbs was able to step back, absorb some hits and then turn it round. Mighty impressive...”

Rock Downpour:
“That Tri-State title looks pretty secure around his waist. Who's gonna be the one to step up and take it from him?”

  • This was the definition of a squash match, Man Mountain Cahill dominated and pushed Freedom Eagle around from bell to bell – continuing the Bully gimmick which the fans have been eating up since he lost the title to Roger Cage back in July.

  • Cahill could clearly have ended this match earlier had he wanted to, but he eventually put Freedom Eagle away just short of the six minute mark.

Man Mountain Cahill vs Freedom Eagle

[Having secured the win, Cahill continues his beatdown of a defenceless Freedom Eagle. Seeing his partner was in trouble, Hawkeye Calhoun came flying out of the back to try and help. Unfortunately he ran straight into a Big Boot from the Man Mountain. Cahill then scooped up Calhoun and delivered a devastating double handed Chokeslam, leaving both members of Brooklyn's Finest laid out motionless in the ring.

Seemingly satisfied with his work, Man Mountain Cahill finally headed to the back with a big grin plastered on his face.]

Post Match Beatdown

Involved: Man Mountain Cahill, Hawkeye Calhoun & Freedom Eagle

Rock Downpour:
“Brooklyn's Finest left laid out in the middle of the ring by that bully Man Mountain Cahill. Is there nothing that NYCW management can do to stop this?”

Ernie Turner:
“Would you want to be the one to stand up to him?”

Rock Downpour:
“Well when you out it like that...”

  • Steve Flash opened this match up, as always, offering a handshake to his opponent. Unfortunately his cocky young opponent was having none of it, and slapped the hand away. Steve Flash had a rye smile, before getting into the match.

  • This match was an interesting contrast between the young powerhouse and the veteran technician, with Steve Flash relying on all of the experience he has picked up in his 31 year career to subdue his younger, more powerful opponent.

  • Brutus Milano had his moments, hitting a number of impressive moves, but Steve Flash was always able to reign his young opponents momentum back in.

  • Surprisingly, the longer the match went on the more it seemed to favour the older wrestler, with Brutus Milano fading late in the match. Flash was able to take advantage of his tiring opponent and secure the win.

Ernie Turner:

Rock Downpour:
“With over three decades in the business, Steve knows how to get the job done. Brutus Milano may have had the muscle, but Flash had the brains.”

Ernie Turner:
“Flash didn't miss a beat. The way he's looking, he could have another decade left in him!”

  • We aimed to tell a story with this one, playing off of Harper's recent tendency to put his opponents through tables. We had O'Logical try to keep his distance from Harper the entire match, presumably worried about splinters damaging his precious skin.

  • Unfortunately, try as he might, O'Logical couldn't keep away forever and Harper was able to nail him with a powerbomb to pick up the victory.

Rock Downpour:
“Oh no, don't do it!”

Ernie Turner:
“Can you imagine how O'Logical will react if that table does anything to damage that face of his?”

[With Dermot O'Logical still down in the ring, Harper took the opportunity to set up a table on the outside. As we have seen many times before, Harper pulled his opponent from the ring, setting him up for his dreaded powerbomb. Harper raised his arm and went to lift O'Logical up for the move, but was blindsided by a returning Bulldozer Brandon Smith.

Caught off guard, Harper threw a wild right hand that BBS was able to easily evade and floor Harper with a Clothesline. Smith quickly pushed O'Logical out of the way, before hauling Harper off the floor and set him up for a powerbomb of his own. The crowd roared as Bulldozer gave Harper a taste of his own medicine as he drove him through the table with a Powerbomb.]

Post-Match Save

Involved: Andrew Harper, Dermot O'Logical & Bulldozer Brandon Smith

Ernie Turner:
“Bulldozer Brandon Smith giving Andrew Harper a taste of his own medicine!”

Rock Downpour:
“Between Andrew Harper and Man Mountain Cahill over the past few months, it's about time someone stood up to these bullies!”

Ernie Turner:
“And BBS is the perfect man to do it! We've missed him while he's been away in Japan!”

Rock Downpour:
“Well here's hoping he's the man bring a little order back to NYCW.”

  • The crowd seemed happy to have Bulldozer Brandon Smith back after a few months away touring with Black Canvas Grappling in Japan.

  • BBS started the match strongly, showing off his power as he threw Geoff Borne around the ring.

  • Smith looked to have the match tied up, but a desperate dive off of the top rope by Borne left both men down and halted the big mans momentum.

  • Sensing an opportunity, Borne continued his high flying offence and was able to stay on top for a few minutes. However he went for one risk too many, as Big Brandon Smith caught an attempted Cross Body from the tope rope and turned it into a Powerslam.

  • Sensing a shift in momentum, Borne's tag team partner The New York Doll came running down to try and aid his partner but ate a Big Boot from BBS.

  • With The New York Doll dealt with, Smith was able to deliver the Backdrop Driver to pick up the win and complete a disappointing night for Borne To Riot.

Ernie Turner:
“Bulldozer Brandon Smith gets the job done!”

Rock Downpour:
“And rounds off a difficult night for Geoff Borne & The New York Doll, those boys can't catch a break.”

[On commentary,
Rock Downpour
informs us that one of the competitors in the next match will be the first particpant in a new community partnership, which will see NYCW working with the New York Penitentiary. The brainchild of
Doctor Michael O'Haire
, who will accompany the prisoner at all times, this revolutionary new treatment program aims to take criminals with violent convictions and give them new, more positive outlets for their anger. In order to protect the identity of the participants, the participant will simply be known as
Prisoner No. 6
.

Rock Downpour:
“Now I love all of the good work that NYCW does with the local community, but I think this may be a step too far. I mean the man has been convicted of a violent crime, and wrestling is dangerous sport at the best of times.”

Ernie Turner:
“Maybe so, but look at the size of him! I'm not going to be the one to tell him he can't compete here!”

Rock Downpour:
“Let's just hope he doesn't hurt anybody...”

Ernie Turner:
“Doctor O'Haire is a world renowned Psychologist, and he has based this program on cutting edge research. Maybe we just need to be open minded?”

Rock Downpour:
“Yeah... we'll see.”]

Elaborate Entrance

Involved: Prisoner No. 6 & Doctor Michael O'Haire

  • We used this match as an opportunity to try bring the crowd back down ahead of the three title matches.

  • This match was a squash, with Prisoner No. 6 looking incredibly imposing and violent throughout.

  • Rock Downpour and Ernie Turner played up Prisoner No. 6's status as a prisoner in one of New York's most high security prisons, and speculated on what crime he might have been convicted of to end up in there.

  • Despite having convincingly beaten his opponent to the mat, Prisoner No. 6 showed no signs of bringing the match to an end until Doctor Michael O'Haire called to him from the outside. Prisoner No. 6 reluctantly covered Hawkeye for the win, clearly unhappy at the beating being over.

  • Post match, Doctor Michael O'Haire congratulated his charge on the victory and continued chatting to him as he led him to the back.

Hawkeye Calhoun vs Prisoner No. 6

Rock Downpour: “Prisoner No. 6 with the win... but was that really part of a treatment plan? It looked more like an indulgence of Prisoner No. 6's violent tendencies.”

Ernie Turner: “Look Doctor Michael O'Haire is a professional, we've got to trust he knows what he's doing.”

Rock Downpour: “It didn't look like Prisoner No. 6 came here to wrestle, it looked like he just came to beat someone up.”

Ernie Turner: “It's week one of the program. Give Doctor O'Haire a chance, I bet in a few shows we'll be amazed by the turnaround we've seen! Prisoner No. 6 did end the match as soon as the Doctor stepped in after all.”

Rock Downpour: “Yeah...”

  • We attempted to use this match to work the crowd ahead of the two main events, but they just didn't seem to buy into it. Maybe we went too long with this one? We'd have to keep an eye on it for future shows.

  • This one turned into a bit of a wild brawl, with all four men in the ring at the same time at regular points during the match.

  • Neither team was able to gain an advantage, until Howlin' Mad Mort dumped Tennessee William to the outside late in the match. Rather than slide out and allow his partner to recover, Animal Harker charged straight in at The Boys of Yukon for a two on one brawl.

  • This went about as well as expected, as the two big men were able to overwhelm Animal Harker and deliver their finisher Tiiiiiiimber! Whitehorse Whittaker went to cover, but was told by the referee he wasn't the legal man. Howlin' Mad Mort roughly threw Whittaker off Animal Harker and made the cover himself, but Harker was able to kick out at two and a half.

  • Howlin' Mad Mort hauled Animal Harker back to his feet, but before he could put him away was forcefully spun around by his partner Whitehorse Whittaker.

  • Clearly unhappy at being manhandled by his partner, Whittaker shoved Howlin' Mad Mort in the chest. Not one to back down from a challenge, Mad Mort shoved his partner right back. The two burly men puffed out their chests and, after a couple more shoves, went forehead to forehead in the middle of the ring.

  • Before they could resolve their macho stand off, Whitehorse Whittaker was caught off guard by Tennessee William rolling him up from behind.

  • Howlin' Mad Mort went to break up the pin, but Animal Harker dived and grabbed his leg. By the time Mort had kicked him off, the ref had counted the three and The Southern Stars had retained.

NYCW Tag Team Titles

Ernie Turner: “The Southern Stars retain! I didn't see that one coming!”

Rock Downpour: “The Boys From Yukon had that match won! Howlin' Mad Mort was about to put Animal Harker away.”

Ernie Turner: “Those boys are strong as ox's, but don't have a brain cell to share between them...”

Rock Downpour: “It's not the first time they've thrown away a winning position. They'll need to think about that heading into 'Battle For New York' next month.”

Ernie Turner: “I don't think those boys will be thinking about too much of anything between now and then.”

ZzlO9z1.jpg

Ernie Turner: “I've been looking forward to this one! The Ring Generals and The Old School Principles for the COTT World Tag Team Titles.”

Rock Downpour: “This is the first time we'll see the COTT World Tag Team Titles defended on an NYCW show since The Ring Generals won them back in August! What a night that was!”

Ernie Turner: “The boys did NYCW proud!”

Rock Downpour: “You and I know that, but The Old School Principles don't agree. They've had a bee in their bonnet ever since, saying that they deserve the COTT World Tag Team Titles for everything they've done for the territories over their long careers.”

Ernie Turner: “Sounds like they're just jealous to me!”

Rock Downpour: “Either way, the COTT board have sanctioned this match and they'll have their chance to back up their words and win their first World Tag Team Titles as a team tonight!”

  • As we were defending the alliance titles, we asked both teams to put on a technical masterclass for the fans and gave them some extra time. Unfortunately this didn't translate too well with the crowd.

  • The Ring Generals showed just why they were the World Tag Team champions, showcasing their technical skills in the early parts of this match as they worn down their opponents. Using a number of holds and reversals, the Old School Principles struggled to get any sort of foothold in the match until a thumb to the eye from Rick Sanders slowed down Marv Statlers momentum.

  • The Old School Principles showed all of their experience as they utilised frequent tags to keep Marv Statler isolated on their side of the ring.

  • Dean Waldorf grew more and more frustrated as he stewed on the apron, encouraging his downed partner. The Masked Mauler continued to taunt Waldorf, as everytime he reacted the referee would go over to stop Waldorf entering the ring and the Old School Principles would use this time to double team Statler.

  • However, The Masked Mauler would eventually push this too far as he gave Statler too much time to recover and turned right into a desperate Falling Clothesline. With both men down, they desperately crawled to their corners. The Masked Mauler made it to his corner first and made the tag to Rick Sanders. Sanders dived across the ring to stop the tag to Waldorf... but was too late!

  • Hot tag! Clothesline to Sanders! Clothesline to Mauler! Hip Toss to Sanders! Clothesline to dump Sanders over the top rope! Waldorf whipped the crowd up as Statler pulled himself to his feet and they set The Masked Mauler up for the Wheelbarrow Bomb and the victory.

COTT World Tag Team Titles

Rock Downpour: “The Ring Generals hold onto the belts.”

Ernie Turner: “That should shut Sanders and Mauler up for a while!”

Rock Downpour: “That's three titles retained tonight! Fingers crossed Roger Cage can make it four from four as he puts his Empire Title on the line in tonight's main event.”

  • As this would be Roger Cage's final match in NYCW, we asked him and Frank to try and put on an epic.

  • The story of this match was Honest Frank's desperation to take Roger Cage's Empire Title, and the lengths he was willing to go to to try and become the first four-time Empire Champion.

  • Roger Cage came out hot for this one, punching Honest Frank in the face... a lot. Unable to keep up in a brawl with Roger Cage, Honest Frank immediately went for the eyes to slow Cage down.

  • The thumb to the eye slowed Cage down briefly, but wasn't enough to hold him down for long and the champion was soon back on top. Cage even managed to hit an impressive DDT that earned him a long two-count.

  • Sensing he was in trouble, Honest Frank slid out of the ring and slowed the pace of the match right down. Roger Cage chased Honest Frank around the ring, and after a lap Frank slid back into the ring. Cage followed him and immediately went for a big clothesline. Unfortunately, Honest Frank saw Cage coming and ducked, meaning that Cage nailed the out of place referee.

  • Like most referees Michael Bull is unfortunately made out of glass, so was completely knocked out by Cage's Clothesline.

  • While Cage checked on the referee, he didn't notice a hooded figure come running out from the back with a chair in hand. The crowd lost their mind as he slid the chair into the ring to Honest Frank, who used it to nail Roger Cage who had looked up at the noise from the crowd.

  • Honest Frank slid the chair back to the hooded figure, before rousing the ref as the figure disappeared to the back. Michael Bull came around just in time to count the three and hand Honest Frank the win and the title.

Roger Cage vs Honest Frank

NYCW Empire Title

Rock Downpour: “God damn it!”

Ernie Turner: “Like him or loathe him, Honest Frank always seems one step ahead of his opponents.”

Rock Downpour: “I just feel for Roger Cage. To go out like that... he deserved so much more!”

[Honest Frank skulked off almost immediately with his newly won Empire Title cradled in his arms. The crowd showered him with insults as he made his way to the back, and he was stopped in his tracks as Steve Flash appeared from behind the curtain. Steve Flash gave Honest Frank a disapproving look, and the new champion bowed his head as he pushed past Flash to move behind the curtain.

Flash made his way to the ring to help a dejected Roger Cage back to his feet. The two men had faced off a number of times over the past few years, and Flash extended his hand in a sign of respect. Cage took the hand and the two men embraced. Bulldozer Brandon Smith joined the two men in the ring, leading the remaining faces on the roster down to the ring. Hoisting Roger Cage onto his shoulders, Bulldozer Brandon Smith and the rest of the faces celebrated with Roger Cage as he bid farewell to the NYCW fans for the final time.]

NYCW January Creative Meeting

HXSuquI.jpgCk3d93F.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/KJgaKKY.jpg

I stepped into my first NYCW creative meeting ten minutes late, cursing the New York subway system. Larry Vessey and Steve Flash were already deep in conversation, solemn looks on their faces. I knew that 'Rush Hour' hadn't hit the heights we had hoped, but I didn't think it had been this bad.

Larry Vessey:
“Ah, you're finally here. Take a seat, we've got a lot to talk about.”

I took the seat next to Steve, purposefully keeping some distance between myself and Larry. Still looking downbeat, Larry started the meeting with his assessment of 'Rush Hour': “Not bad, definitely not good though”. Fair enough. I shared some feedback I had got from fans regarding our production values, and how they stacked up, or rather didn't stack up, against our competitors. I suggested we might want to look at investing before the next show, but Larry informed me we had lost $2,048 in January and he wanted me to show that I could turn a profit with our current set up before he looked at investing any much money. Again, fair enough.

Thinking that I could show that I was looking to bring down the overheads, I informed Larry & Steve that I had decided to let
Devastating Don
and
Fern Hathaway
go. Don was awful in the ring, and a cancer backstage to boot. Fern had a bit more going for her, but with Roger leaving for USPW I didn't really have anything for her to do. I paused, awaiting for the incoming compliment on my business acumen.

Larry Vessey:
“You've got some holes in the roster to fill then.”

Ah, he's worried about Cage.

I told Larry that I understood his concerns about the hole at the top of our card. The obvious solution would of course be
Bulldozer Brandon Smith
but, while we would never let it slip to the fans, he's pretty banged up from his tours in Japan. I assured Larry that I had a stop gap measure in place while I worked it all out.

Larry Vessey:
“Not Cage you idiot, and I've seen your loan request.”

Steve Flash:
“You haven't heard the news then?”

Steve filled me in that
Tennessee William
had called Larry this morning to tell him he had accepted a development deal, and would be heading to RIPW in 7 days time. I was initially annoyed that Tennessee William hadn't called me personally to inform me, but I guess I had only booked one show. This was undoubtedly terrible news - not only was he one-half of my tag champs, I had earmarked Tennessee William as a possible future Empire Champion. Okay tag teams... tag teams... how about the Rock City Stars?

Larry Vessey:
“Ryan Turner? You want to hire that pipsqueak? Okay I think it's time we put some rules in place...”

Owner Goals:

  • The financial balance of NYCW must not fall below $120,000 at any point in the next 2 years

  • In 2 years time, NYCW must have improved on their current ranking of #29 in the world

  • You can't hire any wrestler considered a 'spot monkey'

  • You cannot hire or extend the contract of any worker with less than 35 toughness

  • You cannot hire of extend the contract of any worker known to have problems with the law

Thanks to everyone who predicted and read the first show. I don't have a prediction prize as such, but since I've had a few spots open up on my roster (particularly on the face side) I'd be open to looking at any suggestions people think would make good fits for the NYCW product.

It's been a long time since I've written one of these, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated while I get back into my stride.

Won't post predictions just yet as I want to get a feel for your vision of NYCW, but I'm definitely interested in following this one. Who's your user character?

I don't want my user characters life out of the ring to be part of the story I'm telling in this dynasty - outside of the 'creative meeting' posts, which will be mostly use to let people know of updates in the company and the game world. With this in mind I didn't want to pick a major character to protect them from poaching/contract extensions etc. So eventually I settled on Doctor Michael O'Haire for a few reasons - 1. He starts unemployed and isn't on anyones radar to my knowledge. 2. I have a storyline planned out in my head for a fun Heel psychologist character. My original plan was to use Doc Messing for the role, but having the option of putting Doctor O'Haire in the ring for storyline purposes opened up a few options for me. 3. His entertainment/charisma is good enough for a talker/manager role if needed.

OOC - If anyone knows of a decent render for Doctor Michael O'Haire without the surgeon mask, I'd very interested. I haven't seen many psychologists walking around with surgeon masks on recently!

Do one of those work for you?

And as a man who, I believe, had a perfect score on the predictions, I would like to request the hiring of one (or more) of the following

Jebediah.

Ace Youngblood & Max Mayhem (great babyface tag team to feed to The Boys from the Yukon)

My favorite character in the game, Riley "by Gawd" McManus.

Justice Jolson

That second one is a vast improvement, thank you!

Thanks for the suggestions, I've definitely taken them on board! I've got ideas of what I could do with a couple of them, so expect to see them pop up at some point :)

Makes sense- I always struggle to write up backstage stuff, it's why I haven't had a dynasty here in a while. Mike O'Haire's a good call, he's pretty good and isn't so popular as to dominate the shows and make it all about one guy (always a temptation with user characters).

Also, as a piece of advice: check your product bans. Both high risk and spinal impact moves aren't allowed in the default product and that can absolutely hammer your match grades. Drop one or both and your shows will improve a lot.

But then it wouldn't be NYCW!!! Keep the bans on all those flashy things!

<p>Confirmed Matches:</p><p> </p><p>

'MAW Champion' Greg Gauge vs <strong>'NYCW Empire Champion' Honest Frank © </strong></p><p>

[Empire Title Match]</p><p>

If this was just a showcase match, I might pick Greg. With it being a title match and Frank just claiming the gold, this is a way to give him a good win over a talent that's probably a UMC in your region, is a really good wrestler and will give you a good match.</p><p> </p><p>

Bulldozer Brandon Smith vs <strong>Andrew Harper</strong></p><p>

[Tables Match]</p><p>

Tables are Harper's gimmick. BBS is, I imagine, not long for NYCW. I imagine that BHOWTG or GCG will come calling for his services soon and you want to be able to get Harper, who could be your top heel if built right.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>The Southern Stars © </strong>vs Old School Principals</p><p>

[NYCW Tag Team Titles Match]</p><p>

I love The Southern Stars. OSP is a good NYCW heel team and staples of the division, but the Stars can be built to challenge The Ring Generals in the future.</p><p> </p><p>

The Ring Generals vs <strong>The Boys From Yukon</strong></p><p>

I'm only picking it this way because it is a non title match. This makes me thing TBFY will get the win to set up a title match next month.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Steve Flash and Crockett Tubbs </strong>vs Borne To Riot</p><p>

Flash and Tubbs are just too good to lose here -- even if they are a makeshift tag team and I don't normally go that way.</p><p> </p><p>

Hawkeye Calhoun vs <strong>Man Mountain Cahill</strong></p><p>

Hawkeye is being fed to the monster.</p><p> </p><p>

Freedom Eagle vs <strong>Prisoner No. 6</strong></p><p>

PN6 is a monster in the making. He's being built up, clearly, to be a big deal. That means he needs to continue to eat up guys he can eat up. FE is one of those guys.</p>

NYCW Battle For New York

Live from The Ministry

Monday, Week 2, February 2016

Audience: 1,000 (SELL OUT!)

Announce Team:

Rock Downpour & Ernie Turner

Rock Downpour
and
Ernie Turner
welcome us to 'Battle For New York' hyping tonights Main Event that will see a Champion vs Champion match as MAW Champion Greg Gauge joins us for one night only to take on NYCW Empire Champion Honest Frank.

The show kicks off with Bulldozer Brandon Smith making his way down to the ring. 'Rush Hour' was the first time we had seen Brandon Smith in months, due to his touring commitments in Japan. Bulldozer tells the fans that he's missed NYCW while he's been away, but now that he was back it felt like things had changed. There was something different about the place, something felt off.

Guys like Andrew Harper had been allowed to continually put their opponents through tables after beating them in matches with no reprecussions. This wasn't the NYCW that Bulldozer remembered, and if the people up top weren't going to do anything about it then maybe he would have to give some people around here a taste of their own medicine – starting with Andrew Harper right now!

Pre-match hype

Involved: Bulldozer Brandon Smith

Rock Downpour:
“It's good to have 'Bulldozer' back in NYCW! It's about time someone stood up to these bullies, and Brandon is the perfect man to do it!”

Ernie Turner:
“Andrew Harper's made a habit of powerbombing his opponents through tables over the past year, but had the favour returned by Bulldozer Brandon Smith last month. Will we see Harper going through a table again tonight, or can he get his own back on the bulldozer?”

  • I told the guys to make this one a wild brawl, so there was very little in the way of technical wrestling here. The match consisted of largely Clotheslines, heavy right hands and the odd hip toss.

  • Andrew Harper immediately went for a table, clearly keen on putting the big man away early. However, Bulldozer was able to rip the table right out of Harpers hands and throw it away.

  • The turning point of the match came after a low blow from Andrew Harper dropped Bulldozer. Taking advantage of the situation, Harper used the time to set up a table and pulled Smith into position for the powerbomb we had seen put so many wrestlers through tables in the past.

  • However, Brandon Smith had recovered and was able to power out and drop Harper with a Back Body Drop. With Harper dazed, Bulldozer was able to deliver a Backdrop Driver through the table for the win.

Tables Match

Rock Downpour:
“Harper's through the table, Bulldozer wins!”

Ernie Turner:
“There will be a few guys in the back who enjoyed seeing that one! Welcome back Bulldozer, we've missed ya!”

Elaborate Entrance

Involved: Prisoner No. 6 & Doctor Michael O'Haire

[On commentary, Rock Downpour once again hypes the new community partnership project that NYCW has forged with the New York Penitentiary. However, he repeats his doubts about
Prisoner No. 6
following his aggressive performance at 'Rush Hour'. Was this really helping his anger issues? Ernie Turner says that NYCW management wouldn't have signed up for the programme if they weren't confident in the credentials of
Doctor Michael O'Haire
.

Rock Downpour seems to still have some misgivings as he watches the physically menacing Prisoner No. 6 make his way to the ring, and just says he hopes Doctor O'Haire knows what he's doing or he could be putting them all in danger...

Freedom Eagle vs Prisoner No. 6

  • We used this match as an opportunity to try bring the crowd back down ahead of the three title matches.

  • Once again Prisoner No. 6 physically dominated his opponent in this one, with Freedom Eagle offering very little offence.

  • This one could have been done earlier, but Prisoner No. 6 showed very little interest in winning the match until Doctor O'Haire told him from ringside 'that's enough'. Prisoner No. 6 promptly his the Jail Break for the win.

Rock Downpour:
“Another brutal performance from Prisoner No. 6...”

Ernie Turner:
“You can question his methods, but you can't deny that he's impressive.”

Rock Downpour:
“I just hope he doesn't hurt anyone.”

  • I asked the guys on commentary to sell the storytelling aspect of this match, so Rock & Ernie really played on Flash beating Borne & Tubbs beating New York Doll in singles action last month. Could Borne To Riot use their experience as a team to bounce back?

  • In the early stages it certainly looked so, as the more experienced team was able to isolate Crockett Tubbs in their corner.

  • However a missed Flying Cross Body from the high energy New York Doll gave Tubbs an opening.

  • Geoff Borne was unable to stop the tag in to Steve Flash. Being the fresh man, the veteran was able to build momentum with a series of Clotheslines to both members of Borne To Riot. Crockett Tubbs recovered to dump Geoff Borne out of the ring and Steve Flash hit the Flash Bang on The New York Doll to pick up the win.

Steve Flash & Crockett Tubbs vs Borne To Riot

Rock Downpour:
“Steve Flash continues to defy father time with another win here tonight.”

Ernie Turner:
“Borne To Riot have got to be disappointed not to win here tonight. Tag Teams hate nothing more than losing to a scratch team.”

Rock Downpour:
“Borne To Riot have just got into a bit of a slump over the past few months. They just need a little turn in luck and they'll be back to winning ways.”

  • Hawkeye understandably kept his distance in this match, after seeing Man Mountain Cahill beat down his tag team partner both during and after their match at 'Rush Hour'.

  • Once Cahill got his hands on Hawkeye, this one didn't last very long with the bully making short work of squashing the youngster.

  • Cahill hit the Mountain Topper and got the pinfall, but it didn't look like he was done.

Hawkeye Calhoun vs Man Mountain Cahill

[The moment the pin was counted, Freedom Eagle appeared from the back. Still looking worse for wear after his match with Prisoner No. 6, he came prepared with Hawkeye's lucky Baseball Bat. He slid the bat into the ring to his tag partner in the hopes he could defend himself from the Man Mountain.

Hawkeye grabbed hold of the bat but turned right into a Big Boot from Cahill. The bully laughed to himself as he looked down on his fallen victim, and grabbed Hawkeye's lucky baseball bat as he left the ring. Freedom Eagle made an attempt to get the bat back, but was easily dealt with by a right hand from the Man Mountain. Cahill made his way to the back bat in hand with a smug grin plastered across his face.

Post Match Beatdown

Involved: Man Mountain Cahill, Hawkeye Calhoun & Freedom Eagle

Rock Downpour: “Brooklyn's finest clearly had a plan to try and deal with Man Mountain Cahill's post match attack, but it wasn't enough”

Ernie Turner: “And now the Man Mountain's got Hawkeye's lucky Baseball Bat!”

Rock Downpour: “Poor Hawkeye will be distraught, but who's going to stand up to the Man Mountain?”

  • Animal Harker came out hot in this one, taking Sanders & Mauler down with Lariats, Dropkicks and Suplexes.

  • Sensing his team was in trouble, Rick Sanders showed his experience as he used every trick in the book to slow the match down. Rope Breaks, Rest Holds and a thumb to the eye of Tennessee William.

  • Having survived the early onslaught, the Old School Principals were able to run the match at their pace as they isolated Animal Harker in their corner.

  • The veterans continued to wear Harker down with frequent tags and looked to have everything in control until The Masked Mauler telegraphed a Back Body Drop and Animal Harker was able to reverse the momentum with a big Lariat that left both men down on the opposite side of the ring to their partner.

  • Both men crawled slowly back to their corners, and the tags were made at the same time. Rick Sanders was quickly into the ring, but ran straight into a Clothesline from Tennessee William.

  • Tennesse William was on fire as he delivered another Clothesline to Sanders, then dumped The Masked Mauler out of the ring. The crowd urged Tennessee William on as he backed a downed Rick Sanders into the corner. The veteran was on his kness begging for mercy, and the youngster hesitated. Only for a second, but it would prove costly.

  • Another thumb to the eye from Sanders halted all of William's momentum, and Sanders was able to take control with a Russian Leg Sweep.

  • With Tennessee William down and Harker still recovering from the beating he had taken earlier in the match, Sanders was able to lock in his Figure Four Leg Lock. With nowhere to go, William had no choice but to tap.

The Southern Stars (Animal Harker & Tennessee William) vs Old School Principals (Rick Sanders & The Masked Mauler)

NYCW Tag Team Titles

Rock Downpour: “God damn it! Tennessee William had that much won!”

Ernie Turner: “Sanders played him. It's the oldest trick in the book. The kid hesitated just for a second, and that was all Sanders needed!”

Rock Downpour: “And just like that The Southern Stars reign as Tag Team Champions is over, and the Old School Principals bounce back from their disappointment at 'Rush Hour' by becoming five-time NYCW Tag Team Champions.”

  • We asked the guys to focus on Storytelling for this match.

  • The Ring Generals started this match well, using frequent tags and double team moves to prevent their much stronger, larger opponents from gaining a foothold in the match.

  • However when your opponents are as strong as The Boys From Yukon it can only take one move to swing the momentum entirely their favour, and that proved tha case as a Belly to Belly Suplex from Howlin' Mad Mort took the wind out of The Ring Generals sails.

  • The Ring Generals struggled to get back into the match from this point, their opponents power proving too much for them to handle.

  • With Dean Waldorf recovering on the floor outside, Howlin' Mad Mort whipped Marv Statler heavily into his corner. Mort pushed back against the turnbuckle in his own corner, preparing to sprint across the ring and deliver a devastating Corner Splash when Whitehorse Whittaker slapped his partners back and tagged himself in.

  • This clearly wasn't in the plan, as Mort aborted the Splash and turned furious with his partner. The two big men argued, and much like last week began shoving each other in the middle of the ring.

  • The two men looked just about ready to come to blows, when a recovered Dean Waldorf surprised Howlin' Mad Mort from behind and dumped him over the top rope. Taking their opportunity, The Ring Generals used their numbers advantage to hit the Wheelbarrow Bomb and pick up a fortuitous victory.

The Ring Generals (Dean Waldorf & Marv Statler) vs The Boys From Yukon (Howlin' Mad Mort & Whitehorse Whittaker)

Rock Downpour: “For the second month in a row, The Boys From Yukon have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!”

Ernie Turner: “Those boys have all the talent in the world, but they need to learn to play nice together.”

Rock Downpour: “It's been a tough few months for The Boys From Yukon since losing the Tag Team Titles. They need do something to stop the rot before it sets in for good.”

The NYCW Empire Champion makes his way down to the ring before the Main Event. He tells the crowd that at 'Rush Hour' he proved that he was the greatest Empire Champion in NYCW history by becoming the FIRST and ONLY four time NYCW Empire Champion. As impressive an achievement as being the greatest NYCW Empire Champion was, Honest Frank knew that he could do more. So not only was he going to be the greatest Empire Champion of all time, he was going to prove that he was the greatest Champion in all of the COTT.

Honest Frank then talks up his opponent tonight. Greg Gauge came from great heritage and had been a great Champion in the Mid Atlantic, but he hadn't had to face anyone with the ability and experience of Honest Frank. Tonight would to be a rude awakening for Greg Gauge, and the next step on Honest Frank's journey to being recognised as the greatest Champion in all of the COTT... and that's the “Honest Truth”.

Pre-match hype

Involved: Honest Frank

Rock Downpour: “And it's time for tonights Main Event! I've been looking forward to this one!”

Ernie Turner: “This Greg Gauge is a hell of a competitor. Young, talented, second generation... Honest Frank's going to have his work cut out tonight.”

Rock Downpour: “This is the kind of match Honest Frank would normally be trying to weasel his way out of. I'm surprised he's taken this one on, his newly won Empire Title is really under threat tonight.”

Ernie Turner: “Honest Frank always has something up his sleeve. Let's just don't see a repeat of what happened in last weeks Main Event!”

  • I gave the guys some extra time and told them to slow build the action and call this one out there.

  • The match started with Honest Frank very confident, willingly engaging in a technical wrestling contest with his younger opponent. But Greg Gauge isn't MAW Champion for nothing and despite his relative lack of experience was able to wrestle rings around the Empire Champion.

  • Sensing he was losing out, Honest Frank stopped engaging the the technical contest and turned the middle part of the match into a bit of a brawl. This put Frank on a much more even playing field, but he still struggled to really hurt the impressive Gauge.

  • Honest Frank began to look much less composed as he struggled to make much headway in the match. He looked in real trouble of losing the gold, when the hooded figure from last week appeared from behind the curtain.

  • While the hooded figure didn't move any closer to the ring, it was enough to distract the referee's attention from the match. Not needing a second invitation, a panicked Honest Frank delivered a Low Blow behind the referee's back much to the disgust of the attending crowd.

  • With Gauge bent over in pain from the illegal Low Blow, Frank was able to deliver the Frank-N-Hurter. The hooded figure immediately returned to the back and referee Michael Bull turned to count the pinfall.

Rock Downpour: “I want to know who this masked man is and just why he's helping Honest Frank.”

I logged on to make picks just after you posted the show. Good show even with losing some talent. Curious how this Prisoner #6 story is going to unfold.

Hoping we see a Bulldozer vs Frank title match soon.

Thanks! The Prisoner No. 6 story is just getting started right now as I build his pop up to the rest of the roster. There's certainly a lot more to come from that story.

BBS vs Honest Frank is certainly my marquee match right now, so I don't think you'll be waiting too long to see that one!

NYCW pre 'March Madness' Creative Meeting

HXSuquI.jpgCk3d93F.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/KJgaKKY.jpg

I arrived with a smile on my face to this months Creative Meeting. 'Battle For New York' had been a success, and we'd managed to limit our loss to only $907 this month. Sure, according to TotalExtremeWrestling.com we'd come 3rd in the Regional Battles again this month, but it was always going to take some time to catch up to the PSW's of this world. I had received some good new and some bad news regarding PSW since the last show. The bad news was that both PSW and CZCW had increased their production values, which made us look even more amateur in comparison. However, I had received an email this morning from Mitch Naess of PSW offering a non-aggression pact between the two companies, which could only benefit us in my eyes as my hiring strategy has always been to offer Unemployed workers opportunities where possible rather than guys with existing gigs.

Larry Vessey:
“No.”

Well, that was a spanner in the works. I tried to explain that the arrangement only benefitted us, but Larry was having none of it.

Larry Vessey:
“I don't care how good a deal it is, I refuse to work with Mitch Naess in any capacity.”

I looked over to Steve for support, but a slight shake of the head told me that this one wasn't worth pursuing. Luckily we weren't going to have to deal with anyone leaving this month. The only updates on our wrestlers were that Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Animal Harker had signed up to another tour with BCG. They'd still be available to work with us, we'd just have to be careful with their workload while they were on tour. I'd even managed to add a worker to our ranks. Larry had vetoed my initial choice for the character, citing his lack of toughness, this guy really was old school. Luckily I received a recommendation from a friend in the business and I was confident Riley would do a good job for us.

With all of the official business covered, Larry joked about our referee Michael Bull's recent weight gain, calling the official 'flabby'. Larry tasked me with writing this into the next show somehow as a rib. Steve didn't look overly comfortable with the idea, but kept his mouth shut so I told the boss I'd see what I could do...
