Show Report: The Collective's Debut "Mini-Season" (1 of 8)

Opening Show Promos

The lights are off but there is a loud rumble of sorts as the show kicks off. A spotlight illuminates the ring where Stephen Amell is standing. He delivers an impassioned speech about The Collective, and what it means. He says "This is wrestling. This is a Fight Club, and the results really do matter... Tonight it marks the beginning of a journey and for the next eight episodes you'll be able to follow along on YouTube and on IndependentWrestling.TV because we are here to stay." He says that investors have floated enough to make this "mini-season" but by the time the season ends these fighters will be established and the show will go on... so stay tuned...

Sirens blare through the arena and Scott and Rick Steiner walk out from the back. They cut Amell's spiel off and say that they've promised 2021 would be about the "New Age" well the new age is someone just like them when they started in the mid 1980's... but this man isn't just any man, he's a GENETIC FREAK JUST LIKE HIS UNCLE, and HE'S AS MEAN A DOG-FACED GREMLIN because he's the son of one... He's an All-American... and a former NFL player... He's "The New Age Steiner" ... BRONSON STEINER.

Match One

SCHAFF (3-0) vs. Bronson Steiner (DEBUT)

Well, talk about a surprise to kick off our show. Rick and Scott Steiner open the show debuting Rick's son, Bronson Steiner. Steiner was an all-American Running Back at Kennesaw State and went to training camp with the Baltimore Ravens, when he was released over the summer he began training with his father and uncle, but this is his professional debut. SCHAFF on the other hand has a rare moment where he is a more experienced fighter and it showed in the early going. Steiner's strength was apparent and Cyrus Fees on commentary made frequent mention to the fact that he's capable of mass feats in the gym, but everything he tried SCHAFF was able to counter or recover from. The ending came when Bronson went for a spear but SCHAFF slid out of the way, sending Bronson head first into the turnbuckle. SCHAFF delivered the inverted TKO and took home the victory but Bronson's debut was impressive and his father and uncle immediately pulled him from the ring to critique and teach him...

Promo

TK O'Ryan is seen sitting on a horse in what appears to be a snow-covered plain. He talks about once being known as the Wild Horse, and the man without a plan. He said he would do anything for his team, both in baseball and in The Kingdom... but both sport and wrestling have abandoned him and now he's The Man Without A Country. He's tamed the Wild Horse and he's going to run roughshod over the Flight Club and earn his rank a top the division...

Artemis Spencer is backstage stretching and getting ready for his conflict with nZo's Real1 Krew... "Dirty Daddy" Chris Dickinson walks into the frame and smiles. He tells Spencer "You may not have a ton of personality, but I love the way you fight... so let's do this thing"...

Match Two

Cezar Bononi (0-1) vs. "Savage Gentleman" Victor Benjamin (1-1)

This one was a disaster from the start, neither man is particularly good in the ring and that impacted this one. It was a slugfest, Benjamin tried to prove he could earn a spot in the Fight Club, jumping from the smaller, Flight Club division but in the end Bononi choked him out and took home the victory... and to the victor go the spoils, Bononi maintained his membership in the Fight Club with the win. What can Victor do?! Will he be able to earn his keep?

Promo

This one starts out with an elk in alone in the amounts. A voiceover states "When you find yourself lost in the mountains, alone, and afraid... you must know you are in Grizzly Country!" A metal soundtrack plays as Kal Jax is seen on another training montage saying he was itching for a fight and would take on anyone once he's wrapped his latest training session. The video ends with "Grizzly" Kal Jax lifting the carcass of the elk that he appears to have downed in the wild and beginning to carry it back to his compound.

Match Three

Gods of War (Odinson (0-1) and Kratos (DEBUT)) vs. Local Talents

They came they saw, they conquered. Odinson and Kratos bullied the local talents, identified as Steve Vasquez and Patrick Scott (Scott we'd actually seen on the pilot, but it appears they've decided to just job him out, and Vasquez looked semi-familiar from the Southwest scene, but I couldn't place him...) Needless to say, Kratos ragdolled both, and then Odinson hit the F10 on Scott for the easy win. These guys are dominate forces.

Promo

"Da Pope" Elijah Burke is sitting in a what appears to be an abandoned mansion. He's holding a cigar, the smoke filling the air around him... He begins a missive on learning from the mistakes of others. He says that's he's found a nice base of operations here in The Collective, snatching up a mountaintop mansion from the teeth of bankruptcy to call home. He says that some spend wildly on lavish lifestyles but "Da Pope" he's here to save you from those mistakes. He's here to save you from the things that cause you to fail... He's here to lead you to the greater good... Just then "Freak Beast" Nick Comoroto walks into the picture... he has a long chain on his leg, he appears to be chained to the wall, just in case... The camera pans back and we see "The Fly" Eli Everfly "captured" in a large glass cell he's moving erratically, and similarly to a fly in a jar... "Da Pope" smiles and says... "you see, sometimes I need to feed my monster to help them see the light from the darkness. Sometimes The Madness needs a Cure... But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know..."

We see a pre-taped cinematic with nZo and The Real1 Krew, they appear to still be on the set of a video... one could surmise they may even be in the same studio the show is being filmed in, nZo is on the phone with his "agent" when he looks up and tells Adonis and Grey, "Boys, you know I'd love to be ringside for the big fight... but my agent, well... he thinks that nZo, Entertainment's Hottest Free Agent would be better served opting out for this one... So i'm heading to the resort for some Apres Ski lifestyle... but... you boys... you've got this... See ya at the after party... Real1 Out."

Match Four

Real1 Krew (Liam Gray (0-1) and Adrian Alanis (0-1)) vs. Chris Dickinson (1-0) and Artemis Spencer (1-1)

This one utterly shocked me, Dickinson and Spencer are both great wrestlers, so that elevated this match, but this one was both great in the story-telling aspect and the technical side was solid. All four men looked solid enough in the ring, but the bigger and badder Dickinson led the charge for the victorious team as they worn down the Real1 Krew before Spencer tagged in and wrapped up the victory... Spencer and Dickinson celebrated as the Real1 Krew returned to the back with their tails tucked... at least the after-party will probably be solid...

Promo

The final promo of the night featured Junior Fatu sitting around a table with "The Future" Sefa Fatu and Afa Jr. The Samoan Bloodline as they are known talked about how tonight things were about to change... the main event was about legacies and all four men in it were exactly that... So tonight, Junior was going to stay in the back and make some calls to the family, tonight he's just going to let the boys fight...but the in "The Future" he'll be out there...

Main Event

Davey Boy Smith Jr (2-1) and "Big" Sean Studd (0-1) vs. "The Problem" Sefa Fatu (DEBUT) and Afa Jr (1-1)

This one could have, and should have been better and I'm sure The Collective expected more from its first main event of the season, unfortunately Afa and Sefa, despite being cousins seemed out of sync all night. Studd is your prototypical big lumbering wrestler, which left the heavy-lifting to DBS Jr. DBS delivered though and the finish saw DBS Jr plant Afa Jr with a Running Bulldog Bomb while Studd and Sefa brawled on the outside. We went off the air with Davey Boy Smith Jr and "Big" Sean Studd celebrating a successful launch.

Match Recap

  • SCHAFF defeated Bronson Steiner (Worth a watch, fun debut for Steiner, solid bout)
  • Cezar Bononi defeated Victor Benjamin (Skip. Total dud)
  • Gods of War defeated Local Talent (Squash)
  • Chris Dickinson and Artemis Spencer defeated Real1 Krew (Adonis and Gray) (Fun match, good action, match of the night!)
  • Davey Boy Smith Jr and "Big" Sean Studd defeated "The Problem" Sefa Fatu and Afa Jr (Disappointing main event, told a good story, and this one is a storyline, so maybe watch if you have some time to spare)

Overall Thoughts:

This mini-season will be make or break for The Collective and honestly the debut was solid, the main event fell a bit flat as Afa and Sefa didn't have chemistry, but Davey Boy Smith Jr is the star of the show in the ring.

Chris Dickinson and Artemis Spencer are likely the next two best pure wrestlers in the company, so they'll need some development and a story. Dickinson's path from Open Fight Night to star is being developed. He's got all the intangibles to make that happen.

The Steiners debuted one of their own and it was both a surprise and fun match. No one would have guessed Bronson Steiner as the debut and that made this a true shock. Remember this is a Fight Club, and a guy making his professional debut with limited in-ring training, is really not likely to win but Bronson Steiner held his own and looked solid, he made one big mistake and it cost him the match. SCHAFF continues to look like a star in the making (or maybe already star) and he's now 4-0; it's looking like a rematch clash with Davey Boy Smith Jr (3-1) or a first-time conflict with Chris Dickinson (2-0) is inevitable at some point but with both men on separate paths we have something to build towards during this mini-season.

Elijah Burke and his "Freak Beast" put out yet another enthralling promo, they appear to have captured "food" for the beast, and I'm assuming this means that Comoroto will be facing Everfly on the next episode. This was a great use of cinematic effects and a fun promo. This will grow on us.

nZo's Opting Out of the match was hinted to by him not being listed as in the match, but we expected him ringside, instead his agent told him to not show up, leaving his entourage on their own... they lost without him and Spencer and Dickinson both showed why they are some of the better fighters in The Collective.

Kal Jax's promo appeared to be taking more of a "hunter not prey" theme... let's see where this goes.

TK O'Ryan is also continuing to sell that he's a single act and finding his own voice.

The Gods of War are the true threats of a tag division; how that fits is to be determined, but they are both massive and beasts.

Victor Benjamin and Cezar Bononi wasn't a good match... Benjamin's bulked up look is solid, but he's still not in the realm of the bigger guys and Bononi choked him out. Bononi will continue to get a chance to shine, and rumor has it may even be in the main event on the second "mini-season" episode.

All in all, this was a fun episode, it built on a number of stories and created some new ones. This show was a 3/5 for us, but color us intrigued!

A good way to start off the show – an announcement that there will be more shows. I like the addition of Rick's son Bronson Steiner. I think Steiner's decision got considerable push so I'm looking to see what you do here. I also like the fact he didn't win and that he will show progression. I originally started liking the Real1 Krew the most in your promotion, but thanks to good introductions to each worker, I feel I have a few more that I'm interested more now (TK O'Ryan, Bronson Steiner, the Pope Saga). Great work as always.

You have made me care about TK O'Ryan of all people. I hated the Kingdom in ROH and now you are making me actually care about one of them. Granted I did find him to be the least hateable but still.

Also, what the hell did I just read in that Pope segment. Holy cow the visual of Eli caught in a jar moving around like a fly was fantastic. That whole segment was great.

I didn't even know that Rick had a son who played for the Ravens and is a wrestler. That is a great signing and I agree with tobin, it was better that he lost to the main guy in the promotion. That way we can see his progression.

The "New Age" Steiner, Bronson Joins The Collective

sraRnI2.jpg?1

Bronson Steiner

The son of Rick Steiner and nephew of Scott Steiner, Bronson Steiner was an All-American at Kennesaw State as a running back and began training in the ring with Johnny Swinger in 2019, after a breakout senior season on the gridiron he was signed and spent the summer of 2020 in Training Camp with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, as one of the final cuts in late August, Bronson returned home to Acworth, Georgia where he continued training under his father, uncle, and even a brief stint with DDP. Now, barely four months into his training Bronson made his debut on the first episode of our mini-season. With his blend of speed and power, Bronson is bound to make some rookie mistakes, but he is also destined to shock the world and pick up some big wins.

Great work as always.

Gotta keep the fans coming back! You know what they way, ABS, Always Be Selling... or something like that. I wanted to hype a big debut of a complete unknown and when I read about Bronson this summer I knew he was going to play a part in something. This was the perfect case to debut someone. I always don't always love the hyped debut winning, so this was a great way to do something unique.

The Real1 Krew is fun and I've enjoyed booking it, I've been trying to keep the current climate in mind so they aren't out "clubbing" daily, rather partying on their own or on closed sets, but I have a bunch more planned for them. nZo hinted that he had an agent as an example... So this group may expand...

I really like building characters and having fun with developing guys from scratch or near unknown so this has been a lot of fun.

You have made me care about TK O'Ryan of all people. I hated the Kingdom in ROH and now you are making me actually care about one of them. Granted I did find him to be the least hateable but still.

I hated The Kingdom too... so this was a real challenge. I really liked the tone and direction TK was taking last year via twitter but then with Covid he scrapped it... but I took the direction he was going and made it my own.

I honestly didn't know Rick had a son either, then randomly when researching some of the unknown sons of stars (that's how I found Sefa Fatu too) I saw Bronson was training with Swinger and then actually signed in the NFL so I made him for the database I built in May 2020 with a January 2021 debut date... once I started this game (with a new DB, I imported Bronson and that's where we are now).

Glad you bought liked the Pope segment, the whole Eli in a jar visual came to me when I was thinking about inspired cinematic type scenes and I just ran with it. Saving Yourself From... Yourself / The Madness and The Cure theme is one that I think we can really build off of and I like the dark charisma/dark vibes we can go with here.

Cezar Bononi (0-1) vs. "Savage Gentleman" Victor Benjamin (1-1)

You don't really seem all that high on Victor, so I am going for Cezar here.

Gods of War (Odinson (0-1) and Kratos (0-0)) vs. Local Talents

This is probably the toughest one here, as Local Talents are one of the most dominant teams ever...:p

Real1 Krew (Alanis (0-1) and Gray (0-1)) vs. Artemis Spencer (1-1) and ???

SCHAFF (3-0) vs. The Steiners "New Age" (Debut)

Now I am being serious with this one. I have no idea where this one could go because I could truly see it going either way. I mean it would make sense that a new talent managed by the Steiners would get the win here. But SCHAFF seems to be the man in this promotion.

Davey Boy Smith Jr (2-1) and "Big" Sean Studd (0-1) vs. Afa Jr (1-1) and Sefa Fatu (Debut)

I wonder if Sean is the weak link in this match, I went with him and Davey anyway.

Cezar/Victor was a flop... enough said lol

SCHAFF/Steiner was definitely intended to be a mystery as to the direction; some I'm glad it worked, and that you liked it.

Sean is definitely the wink link, but Afa and Sefa not having chemistry sucked and actually forced me rethinking the Bloodline's next step (in a good way I think).

Cezar Bononi (0-1) vs. "Savage Gentleman" Victor Benjamin (1-1)

Gods of War (Odinson (0-1) and Kratos (0-0)) vs. Local Talents

Looking forward to what you end up doing with Gods of War

Real1 Krew (Alanis (0-1) and Gray (0-1)) vs. Artemis Spencer (1-1) and ???

This selection was chosen because I am hoping they win, made me become a fan of them in your journal.

SCHAFF (3-0) vs. The Steiners "New Age" (Debut)

Whoever debuts has an uphill battle, but I think the debut is hyped like they will win?

Davey Boy Smith Jr (2-1) and "Big" Sean Studd (0-1) vs. Afa Jr (1-1) and Sefa Fatu (Debut)

Just a big fan of the DBS/BSS pairing.

Gods of War I have big plans for; and DBS/BSS too... Also I love the direction Real1 Krew will go in my mind, so I hope it plays out well!

The thought about an open weight division is really valid; I may explore that as the current 205+ Fight Club is almost too wide of a gap to some route... I just don't want to bloat my roster.

Thank you all for the predictions; always appreciated! Participation and commentary too, I love it!

The Collective: Second Show on the Mini-Series Preview

WDgbg6w.jpg

Wrestling Observer Newsletter

January Week 4, 2021

Exclusive Preview: The Collective "Sundance and the Fight Club" Episode 2/8 of the Mini-Season.

Once again The Collective has sent along a preview for the next episode:

Promos

1) We see a replay of the Elijah Burke promo from the first episode of the mini-season. Burke sitting on the couch, with a lit cigar, Comoroto seemingly chained to the wall preventing him free-reign, and the trapped Eli Everfly. This time the promo ends with cursive writing saying, "The Madness and The Cure"... "Freak Beast" Nick Comoroto smiles a twisted smile in the background cracking his neck while Burke takes a long puff on the cigar the smoke covering the screen as the scene now officially ends.

2) We see a recap of the first episode of The Collective: Fight Club. Highlights of all the matches including SCHAFF and Steiner's strong match to open the show and "Big" Sean Studd and "The Problem" Sefa Fatu brawling on the outside as Davey Boy Smith Jr scored the win for his team, pinning Afa Jr. air. This ends with a match graphic announcing "The Problem" Sefa Fatu will make his singles debut against "Big" Sean Studd on this episode.

3)

xCKliNN.jpg?3

Gods of War continue to march towards a true opponent.

4) We see a quick promo from "Dirty Daddy" Chris Dickinson, he's sitting in the locker room with the camera just focused on him. He says that he's a fighter and he's a man that has a sharp tongue and that sometimes gets him into situations, but he's always said "Don't let your mouth write a check your fists can't cash" and since Cezar Bononi seems to want a "real fight" the "Dirty Daddy" is writing the check.

Confirmed Matches

  • Bronson Steiner (0-1) vs. "Savage Gentleman" Victor Benjamin (1-2)
  • "Big" Sean Studd (1-1) vs. "The Problem" Sefa Fatu (0-1)
  • Gods of War (Odinson 1-1, and Kratos 1-0) vs. Local Talents
  • Chris Dickinson (2-0) vs. Cezar Bononi (1-1)
    Card Subject to Change

Looks like a weaker episode on paper, but I suspect this is a bit by design to build more and move us toward a bigger payoff down the road. Have to assume there are a group of cinematic promos.

Bronson Steiner (0-1) vs. "Savage Gentleman" Victor Benjamin (1-2)

You did not seem high on Victor so I will go with Bronson getting his first win here.

"Big" Sean Studd (1-1) vs. "The Problem" Sefa Fatu (0-1)

Gods of War (Odinson 1-1, and Kratos 1-0) vs. Local Talents

Watch one day you are going to name a team Local Talents and they are going to be actual good wrestlers and we'll be screwed.

Bronson Steiner (0-1) vs. "Savage Gentleman" Victor Benjamin (1-2)

I liked last week's debut of Steiner and showing him struggle off the bat. I don't know if that gets solved in a week. I think he struggles again this week.

"Big" Sean Studd (1-1) vs. "The Problem" Sefa Fatu (0-1)

A continuation of their match last week which saw these two brawl to the outside, I think Studd loses to a more skilled Fatu.

Gods of War (Odinson 1-1, and Kratos 1-0) vs. Local Talents

I thought to myself, self: Can local talents do it this week? The answer is no, no they can not.

Chris Dickinson (2-0) vs. Cezar Bononi (1-1)

I'm hoping good things for Dickinson in the Collective, hoping to see a win here.

WON: The Collective: Sundance (Episode 2 of Mini-Season) Review

WDgbg6w.jpg

Wrestling Observer Newsletter

January Week 4, 2021

Exclusive Show Report: The Collective: Sundance (Episode 2 of the Mini-Season)

Opening Promo

The studio was dimly lit with only a singular spotlight on Stephen Amell in the middle of the ring. He said that the initial reactions to the first episode were exceptionally positive. He said we learned who wanted it and who still needed to show more. He said speaking of that... our opening bout was officially for full-time membership in the Fight Club.

Opening Match

Bronson Steiner (0-1) vs. Victor Benjamin (1-2)

It appeared that Bronson is a quick learner as he took a more deliberate approach in this one, and initially that appeared to lead to more damage for Steiner than usual and Benjamin appeared to have it won when he locked a standing triangle on Steiner, but the former Fullback used his power to back Benjamin into the corner and ultimately reversed it, and at the urging of his uncle locked the Steiner Recliner on in the middle of the ring... Benjamin tapped out as Steiner took home the victory and the official full-time membership in the Fight Club...

Promos

Post-Match Scott and Rick stepped into the ring and celebrated with Bronson... Scott grabbed a hot mic and let loose his typical wild promo saying that his nephew was raw, and but he was talented and tonight he showed improvement..... but the Steiners want to challenge his growth and there is a wild man looking for a challenge who is currently ranked in the top 5, and is a former NCAA All-American just like the Steiners, so next show Bronson Steiner is challenging the "Grizzly" Kal Jax.

"Da Pope" Elijah Burke's mansion is seen from the outside, a cinematic shot transfers the camera into the living room where tonight Burke is standing next to a bar cart, on the cart are a collection of pills of some kind, and a decanter. In Burke's hand a crystal glass full of a dark liquid which he swirls before taking a sip... Burke speaks slowly but with a purpose. The camera shows chains on the floor disconnected, and the glass cage where Everfly was located last episode empty. Burke smiles and says... sometimes you need to let predators find their prey... The Hungry Must Eat, and I provide that opportunity. I nourish the weak, and make them strong. I save the haunted... in the background a shadowy figure approaches, he is wearing slightly grungy clothes with an Anarchy symbol on his jacket and what appears to be smeared faceprint... Burke looks at him and says, "I feel your pain son, and welcome to our sanctuary. Let's talk..." The scene ends with distant screams that appear unresolved.

The Samoan Bloodline gets stronger next episode, Open Fight Night, "The Future" is here... The promo ends with a young Samoan smiling at the camera and cracking his knuckles...

"Match" Two

"Freak Beast" Nick Comoroto vs. Eli Everfly

Hard to describe this as a match, as it won't count towards the records, but this showed more of the unique direction of the promotion. We are back at Pope's Sanctuary. He's standing next to the man from earlier, smiling. He looks straight at him and says "You've been everything they wanted, you did everything they said, and then they discarded you... They forgot you. You wanted to bring change... but instead they left you in Pain, Steve... just watch... watch what we can do for you..." The camera pans back and it appears that Pope has left a large room in the sanctuary wide open, the doors dramatically slam shut and Pope lets out a slightly disturbing laugh... "Freak Beast" Nick Comoroto stands in the middle of the room, Eli Everfly cowers in the corner... Comoroto slowly stalks his prey... Everfly attempts to fight back but ultimately Comoroto grabs his skull in the Iron Claw and lifts him for the Iron Claw Slam planting him for what would have been a three count if there was an official. Instead "Da Pope" smiles and says "Enough... soon... The Madness will be cast out upon the world and only Da Pope has The Cure. I will bring opportunity for all and next time Steve... we will let you show the world the Pain you feel."

Promos

TK O'Ryan is sitting on a fence in front of a white barn, snow swirls near him but it is an otherwise sunny day. He looks at the camera and says "For the first time in a long time I feel like I have a reason to fight, I have a reason to compete. I have a vision for my future. I am alone, I am a Man Without A Country, and I like it that way. But I'm ready for a fight... I want Artemis Spencer."

nZo and the Real1 Krew are sitting on the hood of a Range Rover like a mid 2000's rap group. nZo is talking to his guys and says last episodes loss was disappointing, and he was sorry he couldn't be there, but his agent told him that he needed to be prepared for the next best thing that was coming for "Entertainment's Hottest Free Agent"... he said he didn't feel safe coming to the studio to watch and felt like something was watching him, so he said he's started the search for a bodyguard for both him and the Krew, after all... there is safety in numbers... and all-star rappers all have a bag man.

Match Three

"The Problem" Sefa Fatu (0-1) vs. "Big" Sean Studd (1-1)

The Problem child of the Samoan Bloodline, Sefa Fatu made his solo debut tonight against "Big" Sean Studd. Studd has the obvious size advantage here but Fatu brings the same speed and workrate as his WWE brothers. Studd tried to slow him down but Fatu managed to avoid most of his striking blows, eventually walking directly into a Super Kick that floored Studd, followed by a Top-Rope Splash for the victory is his debut. Junior Fatu embraced his son post-match.

Promos

This one starts out with "Grizzly" Kal Jax standing in front of the carcass of the elk from last episode.. the voiceover states "When you find yourself lost in the mountains, alone, and afraid... you must know you are in Grizzly Country!" A metal soundtrack plays as Kal Jax is seen on another training montage saying he's been itching for a fight and now he's heard the challenge from the Steiner's so next episode he's coming down from the hunt, and going to hit the send Bronson Steiner back to where he came...

Stephen Amell is sitting in an office of sorts with a long table. Davey Boy Smith Jr is sitting at the opposite end of the table, they have been discussing things for awhile. Davey Boy says he'll personally beat anyone put in front of him and with the Bloodline they've promised "The Future" is next and Davey Boy is ready to take care of "The Problem", "The Future" and what other name for scrub Junior Fatu can come up with on Davey's way to the top...

Match Four

Gods of War (Odinson (1-1) and Kratos (1-0)) vs. Local Talents

They came, they saw, they conquered... Kratos and Odinson rag dolled their opponents, both masked men, in a quick two minute slaughter.

Promo

SCHAFF is seen in the gym, his long hair covering his face, he finishes his set and flips his hair back, he has a black eye... He smiles and says "This, oh this is merely a flesh wound... when you are a warrior... this doesn't phase you... this motivates you... I've got a target on my back and I love it..... As they say... COME AND GET IT"

Main Event

"Dirty Daddy" Chris Dickinson (2-0) vs. Cezar Bononi (1-1)

Coming off a solid victory in the debut episode of the season, Bononi looked to push his way further into the top 5, but the "Dirty Daddy" had no interest in that idea. Fun, physical bout. Bononi and Dickinson went back and forth for a bit until Dickinson took control and delivered a big running powerbomb for the victory. Pushing him to 3-0 and solidifying his claim to the #2 spot on the table as we went off the air...

Match Results

  • Bronson Steiner defeated Victor Benjamin (Watch it for the story development, Benjamin's likely last appearance in The Collective but not for the in-ring skill)
  • Nick Comoroto "defeated" Eli Everfly (Umm, not a real match... but destruction)
  • Sefa Fatu defeated "Big" Sean Studd (Bit sloppy, bit slow, but put over the young Fatu)
  • Gods of War defeated Local Talent (A squash)
  • "Dirty Daddy" Chris Dickinson defeated Cezar Bononi (Match of the night, really the only one worth seeking out)

Overall Thoughts

This show was lacking on in-ring content, but the story development was significant. Worth watching to complete the season and have an idea what's coming but this one was short overall, probably the worst "show" they've aired so far.

The Steiners mentoring of Bronson landed in the W column today. This was more to write-off Victor Benjamin and give Bronson a W, expect that he will still have growing pains moving forward, this isn't a Goldberg push. He's still raw.

Elijah Burke's Sanctuary is a twisted place serving "to heal those who can't help themselves" and tonight we saw him bring in a new character. For those familiar with the SoCal / Lucha scene the man we saw today appears to be Steve Pain. That said, Pain appears to have gotten into much better shape than when he was last seen in Lucha Underground a couple years ago. He had smeared facepaint, but had the distinctive semi-mohawk look. Wonder if he's a trial or a full-time signing; guess we will find out as it sounds like he'll be in action in the Sanctuary next episode.

"Grizzly" Kal Jax's promo accepting the Steiners challenge was graphic and starting to show a certain violence to him. I like the "If you lost, scared and alone, you might be in Grizzly Country" theme as it really shows the fear they intend to instill in Kal Jax training. He's an NCAA All-American Amateur Wrestler, which matches the Steiners background and while Bronson is an All-American himself, there is a big difference between football and wrestling and Kal Jax might just show him that.

The Samoan Bloodline is promising "The Future" for Open Fight Night, we have some rumors as to who "The Future" is but we won't spoil them yet, but for those intrigued, let's just say he's from the Anoa'i side of the tree. Additionally, we've heard rumors that his opponent is another "legacy" type, potentially another second generation star.

Davey Boy Smith Jr is being positioned as one of the faces still, but now 3-0, Chris Dickinson has a legitimate challenge to SCHAFF top of the table. These three are the current top men in the company and when the next table comes out (reportedly prior to the next episode) we expect it shake out as SCHAFF, Dickinson and Smith at the top.

The Gods of War haven't been challenged yet but when they do find a real opponent expect violence and suffering to be a hallmark of the match.

nZo and The Real1 Krew appear to be getting ready to expand, they've hinted at both an "agent" and a "bodyguard/Bag Guy"; We've heard some rumors as to who they'll be but nothing confirmed.

Around the industry Covid continues to prevent large crowds and that might spell he eventual demise of companies like MLW who are hemorrhaging money at the moment.

It seemed like you were building towards a Chris Dickinson vs. SCHAFF match, glad to see that's the case.

Da Pope's segment continues to be the highlight of the show. There is this sort of, "What the hell?", appeal to it. It reminds me of the Broken Universe stuff, but only far darker.

The first match was good for me going into this because I wasn't sure which way you were going to take Steiner. I obviously know he isn't here to be a jobber, but wasn't sure if he'd pick up the win this week. Good to see him get it going, despite my pessimistic attitude over him and his success haha. Thanks to the Pope I have looked up and learned what a decanter is (I live a sheltered life). Da Pope segments continue to be my favorite on the show, good writing during the segments make me really get visuals from it. I will echo BHK and say it has sort of a "what the hell" element to it, but it's not overdone which makes it great. For some reason I read TK O'Ryan's promos with a southern draw in my head. I don't know why this is relevant, but I felt you should know.

Been catching up on your diary and man it's so cool

The atmosphere is really great and something I like a lot

For me, nZo and his crew.... I mean Krew* is a highlights. Loves the segments, and i'm wondering who the rest of their entourage is gonna be.

This is really great work man !

Fight Club: Top of the Table Standings (End of January 2021 Update)

tOc53C3.jpg?1

---------------------------------------------------

Through January 2021 the Top of the Table remains unchanged with SCHAFF standing at the top, there were thoughts that Chris Dickinson might move to #1 but alas he slots in at #2 behind DBS Jr who has maintained a strong record with only one loss, which came to the man at the top. Chris Dickinson who earned a full membership at the first Open Fight Night is powering his way towards the top. Kratos and Odinson slide in next after running like bulls in a china shop through local talents this month. Sefa Fatu holds the fifth spot, but that is a precarious position! Stay tuned as we roll into February.

---------------------------------------------------

It seemed like you were building towards a Chris Dickinson vs. SCHAFF match, glad to see that's the case.

Da Pope's segment continues to be the highlight of the show. There is this sort of, "What the hell?", appeal to it. It reminds me of the Broken Universe stuff, but only far darker.

As you see with the standings Dickinson is creeping up the table, and is positioning himself nicely. I do suspect there will be a solid bout between the two in the future... especially with DBS engaged with the Bloodline still.

I've really enjoyed thinking up Da Pope's character and segments; the Broken Universe/Lucha Underground Cinematic Style to character building is really intriguing to me and a bit of a central focus to developing these characters. I've kinda always wanted to create a character that people "knew" but didn't "know" in the form I've presented it and with Burke I think we are on our way to achieving that. Still have a lot more in the tank for him too.

Glad the Pope visuals are coming through, I try to think them out myself and try to get them across in a relative quick way. Trying to not overdo it, but also make it dark and strange enough to keep people coming back for more. Plus, they are educational now, teaching about decanters and such! (I kid). I kinda write TK O'Ryan's promos in a southern voice despite him being from Massachusetts; but hey... it's wrestling!

As for Steiner, he's going to have his ups and downs, and by giving him the win here I effectively erased Victor Benjamin and his consistent 10-14 performance ratings lol. I think Steiner will be a character that will develop over time; and frankly there are things I need to sort out with what I want out of him.

Been catching up on your diary and man it's so cool

The atmosphere is really great and something I like a lot

For me, nZo and his crew.... I mean Krew* is a highlights. Loves the segments, and i'm wondering who the rest of their entourage is gonna be.

This is really great work man !

The Real1 Krew have been a ton of fun. Trying to be mindful of the "covid-world" I'm trying to prevent presenting them as "at the club with 100 people" or the typical tropes, but still presenting them as enjoying themselves and being "Entertainment Stars"... The group is going to grow... I'm currently "Casting" for their bodyguard/bag-man + agent. So they have a bunch of fun things coming up as I continue to build that Flight Club group up.

As always, to all, thank you for the support, predictions, and feedback. I love that people are connecting with certain characters and stories, and giving some life to the commentary. It really helps to know that people are seeing things the way I am trying to get them across!

The Collective: Snowed In The Fight Club (Episode Three of Eight Mini-Season)

WDgbg6w.jpg

Wrestling Observer Newsletter

February Week 3, 2021

Exclusive Show Report: The Collective: Snowed In The Fight Club (Mini-Season Episode 3 of 8)

Opening Show Promos

This one opens on the lot, Davey Boy Smith Jr is pounding on the windows of a blacked out Suburban... Junior Fatu rolls the window down and says he has a bit of a reputation when it comes to being a getaway driver... he chuckles... but before things get out of hand, Stephen Amell, "Big" Sean Studd and local security come rushing out and pull Davey Boy back from the car... Junior opens the door and the full Samoan Bloodline steps out led by Junior Fatu, "The Problem" Sefa Fatu, Afa Jr, and now the newest member "The Future" Lance Anoa'i... Amell reminds Davey Boy Smith that tonight is Open Fight Night and its a showcase, so there will be no shenanigans on either side...

We go to a green room likely on the set of a music video as you can faintly hear music playing, you can hear a cell phone ringing and nZo shows up on the screen, he calls the Real1 Krew over to "listen" in. nZo is talking to his "agent" the agent suggests that nZo's brand needs some more eyeballs on it, so for the next episode he's booked him a nice, easy victory against Patrick Scott. nZo agrees, saying he's seen a slight dip in his Instagram following over the last month. But, he says he just doesn't feel "safe" without his own muscle, his own fall guy... so... Ya, he's taking the match next episode, but he's definitely gonna need his Krew by his side, and he wants his agent to scour the globe for "the big man" so they have some muscle before he takes another "real fight"

Match 1

"The Man with No Country" TK O'Ryan (1-1) vs. Artemis Spencer (2-1)

Really solid opening bout between two of the top Flight Club contenders. TK O'Ryan has been building up a bit of a following through solid promos and genuine passion. He's always been a solid in-ring worker, but he's never been a singles worker and now getting a chance to show he is capable of it we've seen a new layer to his game. Artemis Spencer continues to be all business in and out of the ring and he brought the hard strikes to this one, but in the end TK O'Ryan delivered a victory with a solid sequence that saw him hit an Eight-Second Ride followed by a beautiful Moonsault for the victory.

Promo

Back in the lot, another livery-type vehicle pulled up, this time "Classico" Eddie Colon hopped out with his bags and a smile on his face, he quickly addressed the cameras and entered the studio where he was greeted by Davey Boy Smith Jr and "Big" Sean Studd. We see the preview of Colon's debut that aired on the preview, a tropic island type scene... it flashes back into vintage late 1980's/early 1990's footage with a raucous crowd in San Juan and a familiar yet semi-unplaceable voiceover says "I was there as a child, every week watching my father build the greatest promotion in Puerto Rico's history... Wrestling is in my veins... I'm "Classico" Eddie Colon; you may 'know' me; but not like this..." Tonight's Main Event is Open Fight Night, and "Classico" Eddie Colon will be facing "The Future" Lance Anoa'i.

"Match Two"

Steve Pain vs. Eli Everfly

We see "Da Pope"'s Sanctuary from the sloped driveway of the home, you can see what appears to be a fireplace flickering on the inside of the home and the front door swings open... "Da Pope" steps out and says "Come on in, the festivities are just about to begin"... The cameraman follows him into the home and you can immediately hear screams coming from the same room we were in last episode. The doors swing open as "Freak Beast" Nick Comoroto opens them and lets us in; we can see that he is restrained by a chain but he appears to be in a good mood; his typically unkempt mane of hair is pulled back into a tight ponytail... In the middle of the room we see Steve Pain standing over a broken Eli Everfly... Everfly twitches lightly and then "buzzes" back to life running like hell for the open doors... Comoroto steps into his path, grabbing him and lifting him into the air... Everfly swings his fists wildly ripping at Comoroto's hair, pulling it from its pulled back nature... Comoroto appears to be getting enraged but tosses Everfly back toward the middle of the room where Pain hits a Underhook Facebuster he calls the Pain Killer... Everfly appears lifeless on the floor... Burke speaks to the camera directly... "Sometimes life's little lessons take pain, and suffering... And sometimes they just take repetition. We all have a little anger inside of us... but under my watchful eye... we can safely take it out. I help those who cannot help themselves... We Are The Madness, and I am The Cure..."

Promos

Gods of War in Action Next Episode

Prior to the next match, Scott and Rick Steiner go over the game plan one more time with Bronson, they highlight his successes in his debut, but mention his eagerness to secure a win got the best of him and cost him the match. They say he clearly learned when he kept his composure and eliminated Victor Benjamin... Now tonight, he's got the former NCAA All-American Wrestler, the "Grizzly" Kal Jax...

Match Three

Bronson Steiner (1-1) vs. "Grizzly" Kal Jax (1-1)

This one started off as more of a traditional amateur wrestling bout, but Kal Jax clearly outmatched Bronson in that style and Bronson's "coaches" quickly told him to change the plan. Bronson tried to pick up the pace, but Kal Jax had an answer for everything. The Grizzly inside of Kal unleashed a flurry of rights and lefts and then delivered a massive snap suplex that sent Bronson from the ring and to the feet of his father and uncle... They all huddled and Bronson came out with another new look, briefly he swung momentum his way, but Kal Jax had another answer and ultimately put Bronson away for the victory...

Promo

We see a pre-taped piece at an undisclosed location. There are a group of Samoans facing away from the camera. Junior Fatu is standing at the head of the room, flanked by cousin Afa Jr and his son "The Problem" Sefa Fatu... he introduces us to "The Future" Lance Anoa'i; and tonight Open Fight Night, The Future takes hold.

Match Four

Davey Boy Smith Jr (3-1) and "Big" Sean Studd (1-2) vs. Local Talents

Davey Boy and Sean Studd worked well in this one and quickly and annihilated the two masked competitors. "Big" Sean's Big Boot across the face of Luchador #1 marked the end of the bout.

Promos

SCHAFF is lifting in the gym to a heavy metal soundtrack, and he's about to finish his set when Cezar Bononi suddenly attacks him. Bononi tosses him in the weight machine and walks off looking satisfied with his handiwork... SCHAFF meanwhile slowly sits up and just shakes his head.

"Dirty Daddy" Chris Dickinson talks about climbing to the Top of the Table and getting to the top... he mentions that he knows he'll be the face of the company by the end of the Mini-Season... He's the "Dirty Daddy" and he gets sh!* done.

Main Event

Open Fight Night

"Classico" Eddie Colon (DEBUT) vs. "The Future" Lance Anoa'i (DEBUT)

As Stephen Amell alluded to earlier, no one was allowed to accompany either man to the ring; this was a showcase for both men. Cyrus Fees announcing reminded us that to earn a contract it's not always win or lose but its also impress all. Both of them laid in hard strikes but the match itself was a bit flat. The finish saw "Classico" Eddie Colon hit Anoa'i with a Hammerlock DDT and pick up the win... but the victory was short lived as "The Problem" Sefa Fatu slid into the ring and laid a perfect Superkick straight into the chin of Colon. Afa climbed to the top and hit the Samoan Splash... Davey Boy Smith and "Big" Sean Studd came running down to make the save as The Bloodline left the ring and retreated to Junior Fatu by the entryway.

Match Results

  • TK O'Ryan defeated Artemis Spencer (Solid opener, set the tone and good action from both men; worth watching)
  • Steve Pain "defeated" Eli Everfly (Another non-match/match in The Sanctuary)
  • Kal Jax defeated Bronson Steiner (Nice storytelling here, Bronson didn't have an answer for the kind of wrestler his Father and Uncle were when they broke in)
  • Davey Boy Smith Jr and "Big" Sean Studd defeated Local Talent (This is the way to do a squash match, solid bout, fun action)
  • "Classico" Eddie Colon defeated "The Future" Lance Anoa'i (Main event disappointed a bit but was an average overall match. Builds to more conflict between Bloodline and the Smith/Studd and now Colon group)

Overall Thoughts

This show was more steady than some of the others, no real standouts here but also nothing that fell short. Solid action, solid storytelling and some moves towards bigger stories with five episodes to go before this "Mini-Season" wraps up.

Davey Boy Smith's conflict with The Samoan Bloodline continues to be the primary focus of his attention. As arguably one of the more well-known names in the company this has been an interesting way to push new stars and also create an intriguing story. Admittedly the Bloodline hasn't exactly been holding up their end in the ring; but they grown in strength and size and now have four members which gives them the advantage over any other fighter in The Collective.

TK O'Ryan continues to be a bright spot in the Flight Club division. He's a good flier, but he's never had a great character beside "lackey" for a trio. He's been developing the "Man With No Country" character and is looking comfortable in a singles role, it's been a nice discovery and he's earning some fans. Artemis Spencer was a nice foil here as Spencer is a solid in-ring work but lacks a character or direction. Have to assume he'll need one to really grow here, but we shall see.

The Sanctuary took another violent turn as Steve Pain and Nick Comoroto appeared to have nearly killed their play-toy Eli Everfly. Everfly's a small guy, but he sells well and he plays the role of noxious fly well, even in his actions he reminds of a fly bothering a wild beast. The cinematic approach to these "matches" is intentional, its designed to keep these guys on your television without being a formal "tracked" match.

Cezar Bononi has been up and down so far, but he hasn't been afraid to pick fights with those at the top, coming off a main event loss to Chris Dickinson last episode, Bononi assaulted the undefeated SCHAFF while SCHAFF was at the gym. Have to assume the "Sao Paulo Hitman" will have a bout with SCHAFF soon.

nZo and his Real1 Krew took a bit of a more serious tone this week as nZo is losing followers from his refusal to get in the ring for action. At the advice of his agent, he'll be in the ring next episode, but he's also told his agent to keep searching for "the Big Man" to keep his Krew safe... Gotta wonder if the agent will remain faceless and if/when they'll bring in his desired "Big Man"... We can confirm that the "Big Man" though potentially alluding to his former tag partner, will not be a familiar face; rather a newer face with a similar athletic background.

Kal Jax's victory showed he can "wrestle" and he's a fighter; and Bronson's loss showed that their is still room for growth in his career. Both men have upward trajectory but Kal Jax needed the win more at the moment. Bronson is in his second month pro, so his time is coming.

Eddie Colon and Lance Anoa'i honestly both disappointed me; but... both play a central role in this Mini-Season so they'll both get developed a bit more!
