Surely he is one of the most successful and respected grapplers ever to enter the squared circle. His association with the sport has spanned over 24 years, and if ever someone was deserving of being in the Hall of Fame, it's 7-time N.W.A. World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race. This hero of the "blue-collar fan" started wrestling at the age of 16 under the tutelage of Gus Karras. Early in his career, tragedy struck and he was involved in a major car accident. His injuries were so bad that doctors told him he may never walk and would definitely never wrestle again. The determined young Race refused to let his dream die, and not only did he fully recover, but he also returned to the ring...proving all doubters wrong. Once he was back in the ring, Race showed that he had the skills to be a champion. He held several regional titles -- the Central States title, Missouri Heavyweight title, Georgia Heavyweight title, W.W.A. Heavyweight title, and many other championships -- during the early years of his career. But his first real national success came when he teamed with Larry "The Ax" Hennig in the American Wrestling Association (A.W.A.). The rugged duo won the A.W.A. World Tag Team titles on four separate occasions, and held the belts for nearly two years all total. They were one of the AWA's toughest, most successful teams of the 1960's. However, Race's greatest fame came when he defeated N.W.A. World Heavyweight champion Dory Funk, Jr. on May 23, 1973. To his dismay, Race would only hold the World Title for 4 months before losing it to Jack Brisco in Houston. The resilient Race bounced back, though, winning regional titles on his way back to the NWA title. Finally, on February 2, 1977 he again won the N.W.A. World Title by defeating another Funk...this time it was Dory's brother Terry. Race went on to become a dominant and respected NWA World Champion, and truly took on all comers, fighting 5 to 6 nights a week. He even took part in the first-ever NWA vs. WWWF match, wrestling WWWF champion "Superstar" Billy Graham to a bloody 1-hour draw. In following years, Race would tangle with WWF champion (and Graham's successor) Bob Backlund in several highly publicized "NWA vs. WWF" matches. The rugged champion held the N.W.A. World Title for nearly 3 years before finally being knocked off by "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes on August 8,1979. Harley regained the belt a week later and held it until he was beaten by Baba the Giant in Tokyo. Baba, like Rhodes, would only hold the title for a few weeks before Race regained the N.W.A. title. Race held the belt for yet another year, defending it 5 nights a week against the best in the world of wrestling, before losing again to Baba in Japan...and again regaining it from the Asian giant within days. "Wildfire" Tommy Rich was another hot NWA prospect who briefly knocked Race off his championship throne, only to lose the NWA belt back to Race less than a week later. Clearly, Race had a strong hold on the World Title, both in the ring in front of the fans, and also in the (then) St. Louis-based offices of the NWA. But on June 6, 1981 in Atlanta, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes again defeated Race to win the coveted N.W.A. World championship for the second time. Unlike his previous title victory over Race, Rhodes did not lose the belt back to Race immediately -- although Race received numerous rematches against Rhodes in arenas throughout the NWA's many territories. Both in front of and behind the camera, Race was forced to be patient while others carried the "thirteen pounds of gold," and would not regain his N.W.A. title for another 2 years... On June 10, 1983 in St. Louis, Harley Race defeated reigning champ "Nature Boy" Ric Flair for the NWA World Title, and in the process broke Lou Thesz's record for most NWA championships won by a single wrestler."* And on November 4, 1983, Race captured the Central States Heavyweight Title from Tully Blanchard and has held it ever since. 1984 has been a great year for Harley Race. In Central States, he has defended his titles on an almost weekly basis against the likes of Stan Hansen, Sheik Abdullah the Great, Roger Kirby, Ox Baker, Killer Karl Kox, Tiger Chung Lee, Jerry Blackwell, Terry Funk, Bob Brown, and Akira Maeda. Race has defended his NWA World Title in memorable matches against Roddy Piper, Greg Valentine, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, and most recently Andre the Giant. Harley Race has defeated all comers in 1984 and there's no reason to think he won't continue to do so in 1985. For all of the obvious reasons, Harley Race is The Wrestling Observer's 1984 Wrestler of the Year! *Source (in italics): The Professional Wrestling Online Museum

Week 1, January 1985 (Monday-Thursday) And a Happy New Year! 1984 has come and gone and I'm pretty happy with the way my career has been going so far. The Wrestling Observer ranked me #124 in the world, one slot down from last year, but I think it shows that I'm becoming a consistent performer. The end of the year was particularly satisfying as I climbed up from nothing to become a recognizable name in Mexico, gaining so great experience along the way. I also got my feet wet in the U.S. with CWA, so things are looking up! My goals for the new year are to try to get over more in my home country of Japan, which will require some change in the coming months. I'll need to make some hard decisions when my contracts expire. So here's to 1985! May my climb up the pro wrestling ladder go higher and higher! Monday - UWA I decide to stay in Mexico to ring in the new year, hoping that my absence in Memphis won't get too many noses out of joint. There's a new title to be awarded in UWA but unfortunately I won't get a shot at it. Instead, I'll be facing Dr. Wagner in the pre-Main Event. Match 176: Dr. Wagner vs. Flyin' Fuji Dr. Wagner is a tough opponent, with a lot of experience, but I manage to dictate the pace of this one and get the first pin attempt with a sunset flip. Wagner kicks out, so I whip him to the corner and follow him in with a palm thrust. He's ready for it and cuts me off with a kick to the stomach. He tries to put me in a bear squeeze, but I slip behind him and execute a kneebreaker. I follow with a handspring moonsault and a basement dropkick, before dragging him up and whipping him into the ropes. As he rebounds, I nail him with a vicious palm thrust, bloodying him. I go for a Bridging Back Suplex but Wagner counters with a forearm and hits a dropkick to put me on the mat. I slip out of his grounded arm stomp attempt and hit a Bridging Back Suplex for a near fall. As he stands, I put him down again with a Crucifix Cradle. 2! Finally, an Inverted Piledriver puts him away at 20:00, despite a warning from the referee. Rating: C+ A good start to 1985! In the Main Event, a newly tecnico Perro Aguayo captures the newly created UWA World Heavyweight title in a match against El Audaz. Thursday - UWA Tonight it's the Main Event and I'm facing our new head booker, Ultraman. Match 177: Ultraman vs. Flyin' Fuji Ultraman comes out hard and fast, but it doesn't take long before I hit my rhythm and take control. Coming to the end of the match, I take him down with a Japanese arm drag, followed by a neck snap and a basement dropkick. Ultraman counters a kneebreaker attempt with a dropkick, then works my legs with a knee drive and a single leg Boston crab. He picks me off the mat and tries to irish whip me, but I reverse, nailing him with a rolling wheel kick on the rebound. A double underhook suplex knocks the wind out of Ultraman and a basement dropkick keeps him down long enough for me to climb to the top and deliver a flying palm thrust. Another double underhook and a surfboard and I pull him up for a Russian legsweep. As he staggers up. I nail a springboard dropkick, followed by a basement dropkick and an Indian Deathlock to finish him off at 14:00. Rating: C Wrestling News Monday CWA - Austin Idol won his AWA International title back from Jerry Lawler. MLW - Sabu wins the new Canadian Television title in a match with Brian Adias. Wednesday CWF - Giant Haystacks wins the CWF TV title from Dr. Tom Prichard. Thursday CSW - The New Originals (Eddie Gilbert & Ron Starr) win the vacant CSW International Tag Team titles in a match against Hiroshi Hase & Steve DiSalvo.

Week 1, January 1985 (Friday-Sunday) *Pardon the posting delay! That TEW2005 has been taking up my time and my studies too! Friday - UWA It's a Main Event tag match for me tonight, teaming with El Audaz. Match 178: Ultraman & Villano I vs. Flyin' Fuji & El Audaz It's not a particularly spectacular match, but it goes on for a good long ti with eveyone getting in an equal amount of offense. The end comes with Ultraman and El Audaz in the ring. El Audaz slips a magistral cradle, misses a cross tope attack, slips a bear squeeze and locks on a Cerrajera Tangle on our new head booker. Ultraman won't quit and he breaks an arm wringer triple kick to deliver a running clothesline. As El Audaz gets up he's flipped by a rana and hit with a running knee. A spinning head scissors from Ultraman puts him down and El Audaz gets locked in La Cruceta de la Enfermero giving the rudos the submission victory at 41:00. Rating: C+ Saturday - CWA Back in Memphis I'm surprised to find I'm in the Main Event! This time I'm facing a familiar face from Maple Leaf Wrestling, under a different name. Private Jim Nelson is now Boris Zhukov and I'll have his manager, Jimmy Hart, to contend with too! Match 179: Boris Zhukov vs. Flyin' Fuji Zhukov has improved since I faced him last and it's a tough fight! Not to mention Hart getting involved whenever he feels like it! Near the end, the ref goes down off an errant irish whip and I take the opportunity to drag Zhukov outside. A quick snap suplex on a chair gets some cheers from the crowd, thanks to Zhukov's Russian persona, and I follow up with an apron dive somersault smash. I put him on a table and scale the turnbuckles, but Hart pulls him out of the way of my Frog Splash attempt and I bounce off the table, leaving it unbroken! Zhukov tries to capitalize but I hit him with a running palm thrust as the referee recovers. I apply an Indian Deathlock and am about to drag Zhukov back in when Hart gets involved again. The ref has had enough and sends him to the back. Zhukov drags me intot the ring and delivers a stomach breaker and drapes my leg over the second rope to smash with his butt. He whips me to the ropes, but I counter with a rebounding palm thrust, drawing blood! Zhukov is still holding his nose as I roll him over and lock on the Indian Deathlock. He can't stand the pain and gives up at 20:00. Rating: C+

Week 2, January 1985 (Monday-Thursday) Monday - CWA From the main event to the opening match, and tonight I'm facing newcomer Jack Victory. Match 180: Jack Victory vs. Flyin' Fuji I control the pace of this one from the get-go and Victory does his best to counter my speed. He tries to wear mw down with a knee breaker and a single leg grapevine, but I slip a gutwrench backbreaker attempt and deliver a knee breaker of my own. A surfboard stretches him out a little and I drag him up and put him down again with a european uppercut before landing a handspring moonsault. He manages to slip my Indian Deathlock and goes up to the top for a flying standing elbow smash. I'm ready for it and counter with a well placed dropkick. An armwringer sets him up for an Inverted Piledriver and I get the three at 12:00. Rating: C+ Despite my recent victories, I'm told I won't be needed at tomorrow's Mid-South Coliseum show. Wrestling News Tuesday CMLL - Mil Mascaras, Perro Aguayo, and Blue Demon win the CMLL World Trios title from Bruiser Brody, El Satanico, and Dr. Wagner. Wednesday MLW - Raymond Rougeau wins the Canadian Television title from Sabu. WCW - Mike Bennett beats Roger Alexander to capture the vacant Australian Light Heavyweight title. Thursday - UWA Back to Mexico and I'm teaming with El Audaz again in the second last match of the night. Match 181: Black Bart & El Satanico vs. El Audaz & Flyin' Fuji We get into trouble early as Black Bart uses his size and power to dominate El Audaz from the opening bell. The action settles down and both teams gets their offense in in the later stages. Toward the end, El Audaz is back in with Bart and after slipping a samoan drop attempt, he goes to work with submissions on the big man. A dropkick puts Bart down and Audaz applies a head and straight arm lock, grounded hammerlock, hammerlock knee drive, double arm lever, and a knee pull in quick succession. A charging basement dropkick keeps Bart on the mat and El Audaz locks in an Inverted Indian Deathlock. Bart won't quit and slips a DDT to make the desperation tag to El Satanico. El Audaz avoids Satanico's bionic elbow and nails him with a charging forearm followed by a charging basement dropkick. Tired, El Audaz drags Satanico to our corner and softens him up with an armwringer triple kick before tagging me in. A lightning kick and a Crucifix Cradle get me a near fall and an Inverted Piledriver puts El Satanico away at 27:00. Rating: C+ Mil Mascaras isn't at our show tonight because he's busy in the UK putting more gold around his waist. I don't know how he manages to carry all of those belts around! Wrestling News Thursday JPUK - Mil Mascaras wins the British Lightweight title from Keith Hayward. WCW - Clive Myers takes the Australian Light Heavyweight title from Mike Bennett.
BTW, how is Mark Calaway (Callous) doing in your dynasty? My guess is it is probably as bad as Yamada/Lyger is doing in mine.
Well, he's not losing as many matches...mostly because he's been unemployed for quite some time! Oh well, maybe in a few years Lyger will be picking up a few wins in yours, and Mark will have a job in mine! ;)

Week 2, January 1985 (Friday-Sunday) Friday - UWA I've got the main event again, this time against Villano I. Match 182: Villano I vs. Flyin' Fuji Villano's a really experienced veteran, but I absolutely dominate him in this one. He's exhausted when I nail him with a running palm thrust, setting him up for an Avalanche Brainbuster. He manages to kick so I decide to take him outside and set him up on a table. My patented SBASuicida connects and I lock on a couple of Bow and Arrow locks for good measure. I drag him back into the ring and hit a european uppercut. He tries to fight back, but I slip behind and launch him over my head with a Released German Suplex. He lies on the canvas in a crumpled heap and I make the cover for the win at 16:00. Rating: B- I'm not scheduled to appear in Memphis this weekend so I decide to stay in Mexico and catch up on my sleep.
