Jushin "Thunder" Lyger: The Innovator

Week 1, December 1984 (Monday-Wednesday) Monday - CWA After that brutal loss to Warlord on Friday, Lawler has decided to book us in a rematch tonight. Match 164: Warlord vs. Flyin' Fuji This match is much quicker than the last one, with both of us doing plenty of damage fast and hard. Toward the end Warlord presses me over his head and throws me to the floor. To the surprise of everyone, I spring up from the brutal move and grab Warlord's ankles, dragging him out to the floor. Several hard european uppercuts do the damage and an angry Warlord shoves me back into the ring. He rushes me with a charging forearm, but I sidestep and connect with a rolling wheel kick, dropping him to the canvas. The Indian Deathlock is locked on and Warlord submits at 16:00. Rating: B- Wednesday - UWA Another Main Event and another match against my nemesis (and good friend) El Satanico. Match 165: El Satanico vs. Flyin' Fuji A really good match from both of us in this one. We have so much experience together now that the pace of our matches really flows. I get the first pin attempt with a Crucifix Cradle which Satanico easily kicks out of. I attempt my Inverted Piledriver, but he breaks it and goes for an Arrow Suplex. I shift my weight and end up on top of him for another two count. When he stands, I toss him to the floor and sail over the ropes with a handspring body attack suicida...that misses. El Satanico nails me with a charging forearm as I try to get my bearings and follows by going for a Fisherman's Buster. I slip it and hit him with an enziguri, leaving him sprawled on the announce table. Up the turnbuckles I go, crashing down on him with my SBASuicida. The referee gets upset but still makes the count when I roll Satanico back into the ring. I only manage a two count so I toss him out again and connect with a handspring body attack suicida. I lock on a Rolling Romero on the outside and roll him in once again for a near fall. I try for a Suastica Stretch, but the veteran slips it, locking on his own Cerrajera Tangle. I won't quit and when I get to my feet, El Satanico makes like he's going to hit me in the groin. I cover up and he takes the opportunity to hook up a Fisherman's Suplex for the pin at 30:00. Week 1, December 1984 (Thursday-Sunday) Thursday - UWA Another Main Event with El Satanico, this time in tag action. Match 166: Dr. Wagner & El Satanico vs. Flyin' Fuji & El Solitario This is a long match, and a fairly average one. There's a lot of back and forth with no clear advantage to either team. El Solitario finally picks up the win for us with La Escalera on Dr. Wagner at 47:00. Rating: C+ Friday - CWA I run into Lawler outside the building before the show and he informs me that I'll be in six man tag action tonight. And he says he's got a bit of a surprise too. I ask what that is, and he directs me inside. Who should I see sitting on the benches, lacing up his boots, but my old partner, Davey Boy Smith! The East-West Express is back on the tracks! Match 167: Warlord, El Dandy, & Ben Bassarab vs. Tracy Smothers & East-West Express Davey and I haven't lost a step and we impress the crowd with some quick tags and nice double team tactics. Smith gets into a little trouble toward the end as Warlord tosses him over the top with the Press Slam of Death. The big man follows him out to the floor and delivers a charging forearm before rolling Smith back in. Davey manages to recover enough to slip a rear seated punch flurry and plant Warlord with a Running Bulldog, drawing blood. He drags Warlord to his feet and kicks him in the stomach before making a quick tag to me. I'm ready for it and as Davey Boy delivers a backbreaker, I sail off the top to deliver the Decapitation Kneedrop. Warlord's not getting up from that and I make the cover at 20:00. Rating: B Lawler's impressed with the reunification of our little team and hints that there may be a tag title shot in the picture for us down the road. Davey Boy and I head out on the town to celebrate and catch up.

Week 2, December 1984 (Monday-Sunday) Wednesday - UWA With no scheduled match on Monday, Davey Boy and I headed to Graceland to see the home of Elvis Presley, before I had to leave for Mexico again. Another Main Event tag match awaits! Match 168: Perro Aguayo & El Satanico vs. El Solitario & Flyin' Fuji The match turns out quite well, with lots of action from both teams to please the fans. El Satanico is the first to get a pin attempt off a springboard legdrop on El Solitario. Solitario kicks out and gets planted with a Fisherman's Buster for another near fall. Satanico goes for another Fisherman's Buster, but you can't fool Solitario twice and he slips it, whipping Satanico into our corner and making the tag. I connect with a corner rolling wheel kick and try to follow with a Frog Splash, but Satanico takes me off the turnbuckles and applies a Suastica Stretch Face Crusher. I won't quit, so he picks me up for an Arrow Suplex. I fall on top and get a two count before whipping him into the corner ang tagging out. El Solitario locks on a Tirabuzon, but Satanico won't quit, so he's whipped into our corner where Solitario hits a Swinging Stunning Face Crusher to pick up the win at 36:00. Rating: B- Friday - CWA East-West Express are scheduled for six man action once again, this time with Sunny War Cloud. I'm a little worried about it, since War Cloud really let me down a few weeks back. I have to make sure not to let that happen again. Match 169: Honky Tonk Man, Spoiler, & Gypsy Joe vs. East-West Express & Sunny War Cloud I needn't have worried as War Cloud impresses by chopping Spoiler down to size in spectacular fashion before tagging in Davey Boy. Spoiler gets the advantage by tossing Smith over the top, where he lands awkwardly, splitting his forehead open in the process. Davey Boy manages to get back into the ring and reverses a corner whip before tagging me in with a Boosted Corner Dropkick. I quickly tag Davey Boy in again and we hit a Double Dropkick on Spoiler sending him back toward his corner. Honky Tonk tags in and so do I. He whips me to the ropes, but I counter with a rebound palm thrust and tag Davey Boy in again. He nails Honky Tonk with a grounded Mafia kick and pulls him toward our corner, tagging me once again. I leap up to the top as Davey Boy snaps Honky Tonk in half with a backbreaker and I sail off with the Decapitation Kneedrop to pick up the win at 25:00. Rating: B- It is so much fun to be tagging with Davey Boy again!

Week 3, December 1984 (Monday-Sunday) Monday - CWA Singles action tonight, but first an interview, this time in English! I start speaking and the crowd thinks I'm really funny, until they start to boo. I think it's at me until I see Tojo Yamamoto coming to the ring with his man, Fatu. They try to cut me down, but it seems their English is worse than mine and the crowd is firmly behind me. Match 170: Dan Davis vs. Flyin' Fuji Not much of a match to speak of as I destroy Davis with an Inverted Piledriver to pick up the win at 9:00. Rating: C Thursday - UWA From an opening bout squash on Monday to an epic battle of good and evil on Thursday! Match 171: El Satanico & Dr. Wagner vs. Flyin' Fuji & Dos Caras A ton of action in this one and here are the highlights! Dos Caras busts Dr. Wagner open with a corner seated dropkick before tossing him through the ropes to the floor. His pescado misses and Wagner takes advantage, drawing blood with ring post smash before delivering an Uranage Slam on the concrete. Caras gets a foot on the ropes after being rolled in and breaks a Martinete attempt before whipping Wagner to our corner and tagging me in. I connect with a corner rolling wheel kick and apply an Indian Deathlock when Wagner falls flat on his face. He won't quit so I drag him up, where he counters an Inverted Piledriver attempt with a well-placed kick and makes the desperation tag to El Satanico. I get Satanico down with a double underhook suplex, but he slips my Rolling Romero attempt and goes to work. A bionic elbow, charging forearm, ankle twist, springboard legdrop, capped off with a low blow for good measure, have me writhing in pain. Satanico plays the crowd a little as I get to my feet and that buys me enoughtime to sidestep his charging forearma nd send him through the ropes. A handspring body attack suicida connects and I drag Satanico onto a ringside table before climbing the turnbuckles. Unfortunately, Satanico has my SBASuicida well scouted and moves, leaving me to crash through the table alone. He capitalizes with a Fisherman's Suplex on the unforgiving floor, followed by a Cavernaria Clutch before entering the ring. Somehow I manage to avoid his running plancha dive and put him on a second table. This time he's too winded to move and I crash down on him hard. Slowly I drag him into the ring for a cover and get a two. A Crucifix Cradle gets a second near fall. I try for an Inverted Piledriver but Satanico counters and delivers a brutal Fisherman's Buster. The crowd roars as I get a shoulder up and roars louder when I fall on top of an Arrow Suplex and get a two. I whip El Satanico into our corner and tag Dos Caras. He immediately puts Satanico down with a Flying Sunset Flip, but it takes an Octopus Stretch a moment later to finally secure the victory at 53:00. Rating: B The longest match of my career and I couldn't be happier with the result! Friday - CWA 8 man tag action tonight in memphis, which will hopefully give me time to rest my aching body. Match 172: Dean Malenko, Warlord, Honky Tonk Man, & Ben Bassarab vs. East-West Express, Tommy Lane, & Sunny War Cloud I'll spare you all the details here and cut straight to the finish which saw me pick up the pin on Malenko following a Tag Rocket Launcher at 31:00. Week 4, December 1984 (Monday-Sunday) Monday - CWA I guess Dean Malenko was tired of being on the losing end, because he's teaming with me and Fatu in an elimination tables match tonight. Match 173: Tracy Smothers, Todd Tomko, & Joe Lightfoot vs. Flyin' Fuji, Dean Malenko, & Fatu - Elimination Tables Match Fatu is the first eliminated by a Piledriver through the table from Lightfoot at 20:00, leaving Malenko and me in a 3 on 2. I take advantage of the tired Lighfoot and quickly toss him outside and put him on a table for the SBASuicida elimination at 22:00. Smothers does a good job of wearing me down and I tag in Malenko a few minutes later. A table winds up in the ring and we take the advantage when Malenko back suplexes Smothers through it at 28:00. Tomko fights hard, but at two on one, he's simply outmatched. I finally put him out of his misery at ringside with another SBASuicida at 37:00. Not the most technical match, but the crowd here seems to eat it up! Rating: B+ Wednesday - UWA My last match of the year with UWA and I couldn't be happier to be facing Perro Aguayo in the Main Event. Match 174: Perro Aguayo vs. Flyin' Fuji A decent, but not a great match. Nearing the end, I fall on a Running Body Press attempt and get a two count, before putting Aguayo down with a double underhook suplex and working him over with a surfboard. I pull him up by his waist and heave him over my head with a Release German Suplex which nets another near fall. I try to keep the momentum with an Avalanche Brainbuster, but Aguayo slips behind me to apply a Suastica Stretch. I won't quit so he climbs up for a second rope punch to the head. I catch him with a hard ropkick as he comes off and pounce with a Rolling Romero Special to get the submission at 26:00. Rating: C+ Sunday - CWA It's the Lords of the Ring spectacular tonight and I'm teaming with Davey Boy for the last match of the year! Match 175: Gypsy Joe & Fatu vs. East-West Express We're like a well-oiled machine and totally dominate the opposition. Tag manuever after tag manuever connect and it feels great. Davey Boy and I finally decide to put them away with a Tag Rocket Launcher on Gypsy Joe at 29:00. Rating: B- And a Happy New Year! Here's hoping for an even better 1985! I head out of the arena and to a newstand to pick up the year end edition of The Wrestling Observer. Let's take a look at the Year in Review...

The Wrestling Observer - 1984 The Year in Review Well Mat Maniacs, we've come to the end of another great year in the world of professional wrestling and it's time to take a look back at 1984. We begin this issue with a look at all the promotions in action from the massive to the minor and it all begins here at home in the good old U.S. of A! United States of America Jim Crockett Jr.'s Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling out of Charlotte, North Carolina has got to be the story of the year. At the urging of head booker, George Scott, MACW has begun an aggressive recruiting campaign that has propelled the promotion to the top of the proverbial heap, securing them a Global television audience. The Main Event scene has got to be the strongest in the nation, if not the world! Adrian Adonis, Bob Backlund, Greg Valentine, The Brisco Brothers, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Superstar Billy Graham, The Iron Sheik and Andre the Giant are among those great signed to exclusive written deals. Not to mention the verbal agreements with Dusty Rhodes, Dory Funk Jr., Terry Funk and NWA Champion, Harley Race. And that's just to name a few. Expect MACW to keep going strong in 1985! Now, let's have a look at the title picture... The Wrestling Observer - 1984 The Year in Review Fritz Von Erich's World Class Championship Wrestling has recently secured a National television deal, elevating them to the status of AWA and WWF. As a result, a few of the titles have changed names or been dropped from the promotion. The Fabulous Freebirds (Terry Gordy, Michael Hayes, and Buddy Roberts) dominate this promotion and their wars with the Von Erich brothers, Kevin and Kerry are becoming legendary. Unfortunately, David Von Erich has left the promotion to seek fame in other parts of the world, but fans are hoping he will make a triumphant return in the future. The Main Event scene is a little shaky at present with really only the above mentioned in the spotlight.
