1. Thank you for the great feedback! I hope this does provide a sense of what it was like watching World Class, or being lucky enough to have been there in person, a part of the madness! And yes, I agree, it’s going to start getting good! Let’s avoid any tragedies!!!
 2.
Monday, Week 1, February 1985 ”That’s what I told ‘em!” Fritz shouted at me. He was getting heated, but probably not worse than before… ”They ain’t gon’ wrassle for Watts any more, and that’s just the way it’s gonna be, ya hear? Not you, not Watts, not the entire NWA gon’ convince me otherwise.” Fritz continued... I knew this was quickly going to turn into a bad situation. He was clearly upset when Kerry and Kevin told him they were going to start working dates with Bill Watts and Mid-South Wrestling, but word travels quick in this business. Tell a wrestler… telephone… or something like that. He had given strict word to Kerry and Kevin not to accept anymore dates from Watts and to completely disassociate. He wanted his Von Erich boys taking no part in Watts’ long-term future plans, and said Von Erichs are World Class men through and through, and they shouldn’t stand under any other banner. Word was getting around that Watts was extremely keen on making Kerry his big star, even the dirt sheets were covering the action. Although Fritz sweats he doesn’t read them, he somehow got wind and took serious offense. ”My children? Watts wants to use my children to earn a living? You think I’m not gonna use my kids? Does that make any damned sense to you? Watts thinks he can get away with that?” The questions continued as Fritz’ seemed genuinely bewildered by the rumors. Kerry and Kevin, on the other hand, certainly must have felt a real double-stand in play considering David’s success abroad, despite his failing relationship with his Dad. Two days later, I got word that Kerry and Kevin both had not complied with their father’s wishes, and that sent Fritz’ mood into quite the tizzy. He continued ranting about Bill Watts and the “cheapskate promotion” he was running up north, but the truth was, Mid-South was doing really great numbers. Numbers we wish we were getting. Kerry and Kevin’s agreement with Bill was surely sending another rift through the family, how much until the fabric breaks? Meanwhile, I could tell I was starting to lose the locker room. Coming into such an important role in the company with no experience hasn’t been easy, and I knew winning over the boys was going to be perhaps the hardest, and most important, part of my job. There were certainly a lot of guys in good spirits, especially a lot of my new hires which made me feel good, but bad eggs still existed. Iceman King Parsons was the biggest pain in my neck. He had been in who knows how many altercations with somebody in my first month with the company and had a huge gray cloud hanging over his head. It’s to a point where I’ve seriously considered having the conversation with Fritz, but feel I need to have a certifiable replacement… Billy Jack is also probably pretty close to hitting someone, just based on his reception backstage and overall attitude. If I can protect him in the ring, surely I can protect him in the locker room too, right? And what to do with Mike? Kid’s high every day of his life. Thankfully, I haven’t had any real issues with any of the other Von Erich’s… yet. I knew the Von Erich boys were okay with me so far, and I think I turned a corner with Kerry when I told him I wanted to bring in his high school classmate Brian Adias into the fold. I could tell he was genuinely happy to hear Brian would be wrestling in World Class, and I thought Brian could be a decent branch-out character from the Von Erich’s themselves… Another hometown kid, maybe doesn’t have the big name, but he’s that kid who grew up down the street, maybe with a bit less than what your family had, but he had a good heart and stood up for the right things. That’s Brian Adias in a nutshell, the question was, could his in-ring work keep him surviving long enough? At the end of the day though, I knew some changes had to be made. For now, however, I reflected on the month’s big news out of what I saw as our main competition: the WWF, JCP, and MSW. Prediction Cards

 3. Some good AWA action, very nice. Gonna catch up on your older diary to get acquainted, love when somebody can carry a diary over from one game to the next. Best of luck!

Good graphics and enjoy the time period because I was 2-years-old so seeing guys like Davey Boy Smith learning of Randy Savage before his career came to what it was is facinating. Great job and will be following now that I have time to breathe in my personal life.

Thanks Tobin, hope you enjoyed the show! Now that David as finally returned and Jake’s briefcase is a thing, it’s sure to get wild in World Class! Such an excellent era as well, I hope this diary brings new fans and interest to WCCW and the old territory days, nothing quite like it!

 5.
WCCW January Star Wars 1985 Week 4, January 1985 Reunion Arena, Dallas, TX Davey Boy Smith versus Rick Rude In a bout that got the show off to a strong start and had a decent reaction from the crowd, but sub-par wrestling, Rick Rude defeated Davey Boy Smith in 10:30 by pinfall by using underhanded tactics! Rick Rude's continued underhandedness keeps rubbing the Dallas fans the wrong way, in between his periodic gyrating of the pelvis while flexing his abdomen. And despite Dallas' wishes, there was no denying Rude was a physical specimen and was beginning to show signs of winning momentum. Davey Boy Smith, on the other hand, continues his learning... Billy Jack Haynes versus One Man Gang In a decent match which got the crowd hotter, Billy Jack Haynes defeated One Man Gang in 5:54 by submission with a Full Nelson! Billy Jack continues to gain favor with the fans, especially the ladies in attendance. His good-guy behavior is undoubtedly a huge testament to his ability to dominate his opponents. Usually physically larger, Haynes continues racking up the wins using his favorite move, the full nelson lock. As the fans celebrate the victory of growing babyface favorite Billy Jack Haynes, things take a quite a turn when he is attacked from behind by none other than fellow newcomer, “Macho Man” Randy Savage! Haynes doesn’t see him coming, instead hanging over by one of the ringsides as he interacts with the fans following his win. Savage apparently ran from out of the entranceway, over to Haynes, and drilled him over the head with a big double axe handle! Haynes falters and succumbs to a continued beatdown at the hands of Savage, who has to eventually be restrained by World Class officials before things get truly out of hand! Rage is in the eyes of Savage, who must be out for revenge following comments by Billy Jack, which some have not even considered hostile. But they have certainly struck a nerve with Randy Savage, who has certainly started quite a tiff with Billy Jack! How will Billy Jack respond…? The Missing Link versus Scott Hall In a wild brawl that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Scott Hall defeated The Missing Link in 7:38 by pinfall. Link came out with everything but the kitchen sink, and Hall did his best to fend off the savage man, who pulls his hair in between beating his opponents to a bloody pulp. Hall, however, overcomes the odds and, despite having a superior physical attributes, comes across at the underdog as he catches Link with a gigantic clothesline to seal the deal. NWA American Tag Team Championship The Fantastics © versus The Midnight Express In a decent match which got the crowd hotter, The Fantastics © defeated The Midnight Express in 16:26 when Bobby Fulton pinned Bobby Eaton with a Flying Body Press. This was after Eaton's manager, Jim Cornette, accidentally whacked his own man with his tennis racket! The Dallas crowd remains firmly behind their tag champions, while Cornette continued to draw no love from the viewers and fans in attendance. Cornette appeared a bit desperate, doing whatever he could to play his hand in his one, and it backfired. The Fantastics retain the NWA American Tag Team titles, and make successful defence number five. Iceman King Parsons versus Randy Savage In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Randy Savage defeated Iceman King Parsons in 12:16 with a Flying Elbow Smash. The self-proclaimed "Macho Man" showed off some serious talent as he took to highly competitive King Parsons who came into the night rockin' and rollin'. Savage was able to overwhelm Parsons with flurries of punches when it came to, in between some excellent fast-paced action. He wowed the fans with a big flying elbow drop to take the pinfall, but none of his great work in the ring served him any due with the fans. Certainly upset over his attack earlier on Billy Jack Haynes, Savage was already the most hated guy in the room come match bell. After an incredible flying maneuver from Randy Savage which gathered him the three count, the referee raised the “Macho Man’s” arm as fans gave him a piece of their mind. Not only were the unhappy with Savage’s continued victories, this time over the popular Iceman King Parsons, but also following Savage’s attack on growing favorite Billy Jack Haynes earlier in the evening. And as a matter of revenge… it’s Billy Jack himself who takes to the ring! The crowd grows with excitement as Billy Jack ran out from behind the entrance curtain and rushed to the ring, where Savage immediately takes note and almost panics! But alas, Savage is able to roll out from the opposite side of the ring and jumps the barricades into the crowd, who continue to hurl insults towards him! Billy Jack stops at the ropes and shakes them in frustration as the fans support their new babyface in spite of Savage who appears to be a new enemy for the people of Texas! With Billy Jack unable to get his hands on Savage tonight, what’s next for these two in World Class Championship Wrestling? https://i.imgur.com/2OqK20D.png{/img] Rock N’ Roll Express versus The Fabulous Freebirds In a good match, Rock N' Roll Express defeated The Fabulous Freebirds in 14:21 when Robert Gibson pinned Michael Hayes with a Rocker Dropper. The Freebirds really wrestled their butts off, certainly in recognition of Hayes' near departure for the WWF. They were able to draw heat like a mosquito to light as the Dallas crowd was loving another chance to give the Freebirds a piece of their mind. And to no surprise, the Rock N' Roll Express came across as big babyfaces in the limelight. The hot new tag team in World Class secured a big win over the Freebirds, and a higher level of respect with World Class fans. Finally, the moment has arrived! It’s the return of David Von Erich to the World Class Championship Wrestling ring! We find ring announcer Marc Lowrence standing in the middle of the ring, pleased to announce to the ring, patriarch of the Von Erich family… Fritz Von Erich! The Denton County legend makes his way out to an exceptional applause, and joins Lowrence in the ring. Fritz tells all in attendance he couldn’t be more proud to be here with everyone as his son, David, returns from his time overseas and will be here forward joining the World Class family once again as a star competitor! During Fritz’ speech, his other sons’, Kevin, Kerry, and Mike make their way to the ring, also accompanied by matriarch Doris and youngest son Chris. It’s a family affair in Dallas, as Fritz speaks to a reminiscent moment when David fought off the likes of The Great Kabuki at a previous Star Wars event back in February of 1981, and how much David has grown since. He calls him a future NWA Heavyweight champion, undoubtedly, and then proceeds to welcome David to the ring! As Bonnie Taylor’s I Need a Hero begins blaring throughout the Reunion Arena, the “Yellow Rose of Texas” makes his way down the entrance way and the crowd absolutely erupts! Some have said they felt the entire arena shaking as David walked out full steam ahead, confident with each step. His cowboy hat affixed at the head, and wrestling gear on accompanied by a brown leather vest with “Yellow Rose'' embroidered on the back, David high-fives the fans down the aisle, as the camera follows him through overloaded barricades of fans. Women, kids, and even men alike are all going crazy over David’s final return to Reunion Arena. His return to the great state of Texas… hell, his return to the greatest country on Earth! The tall, ginger haired David eagerly jumps into the ring, and immediately his brothers hug him as if they haven’t seen him since his return to the country, and spends time with each family member before turning to the fans and giving his appreciation. He kisses his hand to the fans as roses are thrown into the ring. One couldn’t come up with a better feel-good moment in professional wrestling... David speaks to the fans once receiving the microphone, and expresses his deepest gratitude for their appreciation (and admiration) upon his return. He promises to fight hard for them, and to fight hard for his family, and promises to soon achieve his dream of becoming a world champion! He learned a lot overseas, won a lot of titles, and earned a lot of accolades. But nothing replaces the feeling of being home, and calls this the greatest moment of his life. Unfortunately for David and his family, their “Texas Homecoming” as soon to be spoiled as the collective of Chris Adams, Gino Hernandez, and Jake Roberts, accompanied by Gary Hart, hit the ring! The foursome makes their way down the same aisle way and immediately disrupts the crowd’s feel-good moment. Once in the ring, it’s clear the rest of the Von Erich’s are ready to fight, putting their fists up and rushing mother Doris out of the ring. But David, stands between them both, putting his hand out to his brothers, and welcoming the foursome into the ring. The heels are clearly stand-off-ish, and ease their way into the situation. Gino is first with a microphone and sarcastically welcomes David back home to Dallas, Texas. He mocks David, asking him how his economy flight was, since clearly he can’t afford first class like himself. But that’s besides the point, but Gino and the rest of his buddies came out tonight to make one thing clear: nothing is changing in World Class wrestling just because David Von Erich has returned. In fact, David ought to book his ticket back to Tokyo because he’s going to wish he never came back! No amount of apple pies cooked by mother Doris could soften the blows David is going to feel if he doesn’t stay out of Gino’s business and all of the others! He promises David the beating of a lifetime, and tells him he better forget not only the World Championship, but also the NWA Texas Heavyweight championship, because he doesn’t stand a chance at achieving any of them and better not think twice about them ever again! David takes issue with Gino’s interruption, and is hot about all of them coming out and wanting to spoil his homecoming. He calls Gino a silver-spooned brat from Highland Parks with no idea of what it means to fight for his family and fight for what he believes in! And David believes Texas is his home, and home is where his heart is, which means David is the rightful Texas Heavyweight champion and all of Texas knows it! This gets major appeal from the fans as they stay hot through the angle. That’s when Gary Hart snatches the microphone and quickly reminds David of all his failures in chasing gold! He brings up his loss to Ric Flair last year, and says that proves David never deserves a shot again! And as long as Gary Hart is standing their managing the next World Champion, Chris Adams, David can forget all the lies he’s told the wonderful people of Texas (who clearly can’t stand him)! Jake Roberts, still holding his briefcase supposedly holding $250,000, takes the microphone next, and clearly states how he feels. David is the key to his cashing in this cash cow called his briefcase, and nothing will stand at his way from acquiring the riches Jake has dreamed of as a kid… and just like that he jumps David! The fans got ballistic as David and Jake exchange blows, and the entire ring turns berserk! It’s hard to keep up with who’s fighting who, but a problem for referee David Manning who hits the ring and calls for the bell! Jake Roberts and The Dynamic Duo versus The Von Erich Family ‘ In a bout that had superb wrestling and great heat, The Von Erich Family defeated Jake Roberts and The Dynamic Duo (Chris Adams and Gino Hernandez) in 24:40 when David Von Erich forced Gino Hernandez to submit to the Iron Claw! It was a hot match throughout, as David took centerstage through most of the match, and fought back from some tough offense from Gino but was able to make his square on his end at the end of the day. Action also saw Kerry Von Erich and Chris Adams getting into a tussle, which also would involve Gary Hart attempting to interfere, but failing to do so at the behest of David; while Kerry and Chris Adams battled it out as well. When referee David Manning called for the bell, the fans were ecstatic, as the Von Erich’s sent everyone home happy with a big win in the return of David Von Erich! 10.
Saturday, Week 2, January 1985 ”Michael’s on his way out.” Fritz told me face-to-face. He was referring to Michael Hayes, one half of the Fabulous Freebirds. ”You know, Michael and I have a good relationship. He’s been good to me. I been good to him. And you know, the whole Freebird and Von Erich thing, you know you can’t do that forever.” Fritz continued. ”And Vince is paying him good.” I added. ”Yes, likely very good.” He concluded. ”Damnit!” I said, clenching my fist. Hayes was a brilliant performer and a huge name in World Class. I was going to rely on him to carry a lot of the backbone of the roster, but now my plans had to change. Probably not the first time I was going to have this feeling, but at least it was early enough. And where did that leave his partner-in-crime, Terry Gordy? Fritz and I soon gave Terry the call, one he was probably expecting. Terry was friendly and honest. Yes, he would accept an offer from Vince, but no, there was not one on the table. But had Terry, at this point, also ran his course? That was a question I would have to figure out, but at this point, I guess I was blessed to say Hayes was all Vince had targeted. The World Wrestling Federation was on a massive hiring spree, it was hard to even keep up with the news. Terry Funk, Rick Martel, The Road Warriors, Jimmy Garvin, Ron Garvin, and others. Some names I would have loved to bring in… Also newsworthy was the announcement of Stan Hansen and Bruiser Brody both signing written deals with New Japan Pro Wrestling, and went on to win the tag titles in their first match together. The WWF was making moves in the market, Jim Crockett Promotions was situating themselves internally. It’s become evident that Ric Flair is going to be the company’s figurehead moving forward, and will immediately enter a program with Dory Funk Jr. Also being pit together, Dusty Rhodes and Manny Fernandez against The Koloffs, as well as “Superstar” Billy Graham going into a program with up-and-comer Magnum T.A. Meanwhile, I was dealing with more backstage troubles. Buck Zumhofe brought some outsiders to a few shows this week, and to say they were questionable individuals would be an understatement. I gave him a stern warning personally to try to give myself some rep in the locker room, and it seems to have gone over well. Iceman King Parsons failed to show up to a meeting with a road agent, receiving an earful from Fritz, and that was even after he got into a fight and clocked Tom Zenk pretty good in the locker room. Speaking of Fritz, Mike Von Erich missed a road agent meeting, for the third time in two weeks. I made a ballsy move and decided to dock Mike’s pay, which received serious criticism from Fritz and the rest of his boys. In retrospect, probably not a good call to make two weeks on the job, but at least it’s helped me see where the line may be and when not to cross it… Alas, the road towards January Star Wars continues...

Predition Cards

 12.
Saturday, Week 1, January 1985 I woke up the next day after a short night’s sleep. I was invited out after our Friday night headline house show, and needless to say, things got a bit rowdy. Babying a hangover, I could barely make my way over to the phone in time to catch the incoming call. ”Can you believe this loada’ horse mananeur?” A frazzled Fritz Von Erich said over the line. ”Huh? Fritz?” I could barely intake anything he was saying. ”That wanna be ‘playboy’ Gary is off booking for Geigel now! I knew he was a salty bastard. When I knew he would find out I was giving you the book, oh I avoided him for about an entire week, I reckon.” “Fritz, what are you talking about?” “Gary! Gary Hart! He took the book with Geigel up in the midwest!” He replied. Slowly putting things together, he must have been saying Gary Hart was taking over the booking position with Central States Wrestling, another NWA-affiliate owned by Bob Giegel. Their office was based out of Kansas City, Missouri, essentially neighboring some of what Fritz was looking to book. I certainly had no acquaintance with the relationship Fritz has had with Gary over the years, so I wasn’t one to judge his reaction. I simply listened, as much as I could take. Fritz ranted about Gary, about how Gary never respected him and never gave him the due he deserved for ‘being the one to put him over’. My thoughts on Gary Hart were that he was an essential piece to the landscape of World Class, but I could tell Fritz was ready to give him the boot. “Woah, woah, Fritz, listen. You can’t blame a guy for going out and getting his money. Gary is a smart guy, and Giegel needs someone smart to run his booking, just like you need someone smart Fritz.” “Oh yeah, that why I got you?” “That’s right Fritz!” I said jokingly. This got him to lose a bit of his edge, but things soon ramped up when he learned additional news. Mid-South was making moves on the market, and they were quickly talking to a bunch of World Class guys… including Von Erichs. Kerry, our NWA American champion, got a big earful when Fritz learned Kerry was going to work dates for Bill Watts. But, I wonder if Fritz perhaps learned something from David running off earlier the year before… because for some reason Kerry didn’t back down and hasn’t said anything about decommitting from Watts. Besides, what else could he say when he learned Gino Hernandez had signed a deal with Watts first? Not only them, but Jake Roberts, Iceman King Parsons… I guess Fritz was forgetting a bunch of our roster already was working for Mid-South. That meant nothing in the face of Fritz spending hours going over how much of a crook Watts was, and how Mid-South Wrestling is a farce of a wrestling promotion. Called Watts a backstabber… a politicker… yeah yeah, aren’t you all Fritz… Most importantly, nobody said they would prioritise Mid-South overworking World Class shows, so what was there to complain about. Besides, I was hoping to pick off some potential stars in other territories too. I say it’s fair game…I had other problems going on too. Mike Von Erich, Billy Jack Haynes, Tom Zenk, they were all skipping road agent meetings and I asked Fritz to give them a stern warning. Although, that kid Mick Foley really brought everyone together, if only briefly, when he found that old karaoke machine in the locker room closet and put on quite a performance for us. Bringing me back to reality, Fritz asked to speak to me for a few minutes. He quickly ran over some, “guidelines”, he was passing across. He said if I didn’t have some goal posts to shoot for, how would I know where I was trying to score… or something like that. Anyways, he basically told me my number one priority was to grow World Class wrestling influence and size. He said he had done some deep digging on what I had mentioned, and was open to expansion, even if it upset the foundation of the National Wrestling Alliance. Also, he was very adamant that I was not allowed to hire any of those “comedian funny guy workers”, and definitely “nobody doing anything crazy like David told me about in Japan, no guys jumping off the tunnel way entrances or anything”, I think he was referring to what he called “the new daredevil style”... In my downtime, I was able to read-up on the latest in the World Wrestling Federation. Vince was getting closer to his so-called WrestleMania event. A giant pay-per-view supercard he had apparently been putting a lot of marbles on. As things appeared, it was shaping up for an epic showdown between Hulk Hogan and Paul Orndorff, as well as Andre the Giant against fellow big man Big John Studd. Needless to say, things were going to change drastically if this were to go off without a hitch, and these were damn good programs to put together ahead of supercard.

Predition Cards

It will be interesting to see what happens in the game related to their addictions. Jack's death was definitely tragic, but certainly isn't an excuse for how Fritz treated his kids from there on. Some of the best wrestling audio content available for free ever produced and served as a lot of inspiration for this diary. I think it's extremely important for wrestling fan of any era to know the story of the Von Erich family. It really is unbelievable how much they went through and how many lessons they continuously never learned. An amazing sectional of the human psyche.

Anyways, I'm a a couple months into booking so don't really see any issue with getting that far at this point. I'm going to cut back on the number of words to make it more digestable and certainly quicker to produce on my end considering how busy I am IRL. Glad to have you all along for this wild ride!

 15.
If I couldn’t shave top talent at the demand of Fritz Von Erich (not that I was interested to in the first place), I had to look elsewhere for cost cutting. It wasn’t long before I realized how much Fritz was spending on his live event staff. “Two haulers?” I asked. “What the hell is two haulers?” “Ah! Randy and Murph! Yeah, love those kids. Good kids, you know? Used to have those two over at the farm when they were younger, hauled a lot of hay for me. Paid ‘em a nickel a ‘noon, I’d say. That was five cents a day. Hard workers I’ll tell ‘ya…” Fritz reminisced... “And what do they do?” I inquired. “What do they do? Well… they, uh. Why do they carry the equipment and help set up the ring! Every other show I think… or was it every other Saturday?” He pondered. “They’ve gotta go.” I put it bluntly. “What?” He replied. “They’ve got to go Fritz! You’re spending too much on your live event staffing. We have got to cut this production down a notch, Fritz.” “Cut it down? We put on the best damn live event in Texas! We can’t cut down our staff!” “Fritz, you cut it down or you go insolvent. Which would you prefer.” “Ah, damnit well… run me through the numbers again!” And so I did, shaving $5,000 off a show with the cuts I made. Just hoped to god it would work out come showtime, but for the time being, I felt we could shave $16,000 off of our monthly costs just with that move. I looked elsewhere as well. My eyes widened once I saw how much Fritz was allotting himself from the company funding… $22,000 a month… Safe to say life on the Von Erich farm was good… very good. He scrambled and tore the paper away from me once he noticed I was reading some sensitive financial information. He looked at the sheet and then looked back up at me. “Kid, you think David will come around?” I couldn’t believe he was about to confide in me. “Uh… well Fritz, I-” “Ha! Kid’s as stubborn as his old man… He seems different though. Something has changed.” Fritz said looking into the distance. “People can change when they are in a different country, hell, a different world for half a year.” I followed with, trying to give Fritz some sense of rationale for the feelings he might be having. Wasn’t sure I was getting through… “People change, that’s for damn sure. People love to change their minds about any damn thing! What’s for breakfast! What’s on the tube! Who’s winning the belt!...” He let his words echo in the tight office. I could hear the fan swirling ahead as cars went by outside the window. “Does this all have to do with the Flair match?” I asked, holding my balls in one hand. Fritz looked at me with a stern brow, perhaps I was trying to dig too deep. “Don’t you have some money to save me?” He said. I understood what he was trying to say. I quickly changed the topic back to details of the company and less about his family relationships… “Maybe I could convince you to run a few less shows?” I asked. Fritz was quick to stomp that idea out. World Class was running a couple shows a week, with the big weekly shows taking place every Friday either at the Dallas Sportatorium or Reunion Arena. This has been going on for years… “Well, maybe more shows outside of just Dallas-Ft. Worth?” “Funny.” Fritz responded. “Why not?” I challenged… “You’ve got a lot to learn, huh?” He said back. “What, that you’ve got a bunch of other guys in your position holding down their territories across the country? You think McMahon gives a damn about your territory?” I had Fritz thinking again. “I know you’ve been thinking about it Fritz. Since you changed the name to World Class, you’ve been hinting to something.” He scratched his head as he read a piece of paper in front of him, almost like he was trying to ignore me. “Come on Fritz, I know you better than that.” “You don’t know me at all.” Fritz said, as he whipped his paper on his desk and got up from his chair. He turned around the stretched, and walked towards the office door. “I’m gonna wrap things up here, kid. You better take off.” * * * And with that, I hit the road home. We still hadn't firmly narrowed down our long-term booking strategy, but we knew David was returning and it was going to be a big event for World Class Championship Wrestling. My phone rang. "Hey man, called the office earlier and was told you headed home, so I figured I'd give you a ring." The voice on the other side said. It was David Von Erich. "Hey David! Yeah, just got home a bit ago, how's things? Settling in alright?" I asked. "Things are well, yep, things are well. Mama back in the kitchen for me again, spent some time with the boys. You know, haven't been in the ring in a month, so it's been great to heal up. Those guys in Japan, man, you wouldn't believe how hard they hit. I had a bruised sternum for the first two months over there, one of the toughest I've worked through." He said. I had heard of how Japanese workers performed, but hadn't seen much if anything of real Japanese wrestling, only what could be imported in the ring locally over here. "Wow, that does sound tough. Well David, I know we haven't spoke much, but it's great to have you back. Sure you haven't heard enough of that." I said jokingly. He chuckled. "Got that right. Man, I'm just lucky to be back. Was a long six months, my friend. But, as they say, home, sweet home!" He was in good spirits. "Oh absolutely. Did you talk to Fritz when you called?" I was curious... "Uh, no, Fritz wasn't there." He responded. That immediately smelled funky to me... there was nobody else there but Fritz and I. "But you said the office said I was home already?" I asked. "Huh? Nah I didn't say that. I said I called the office and figured you were home or somethin' since no one answered. But hey! You know I'm getting the old Texas ring boots back on, and, well, ready to get in the ring and mess around with the boys a bit. Got some great ideas we need to run by... I got a question for you... What's the plan with the belt?" He was dodging the question. "The belt?" There were many belts, but I wasn't sure if he meant the big daddy of them all, currently held by Ric Flair, or the NWA American Heavyweight title, held by his brother, Kerry. "Yeah, the Texas title." He was referring to the Texas Heavyweight championship, currently around the waist of massive heel Gino Hernandez. "Honestly, Dave, haven't narrowed down a lot yet. I've got some ideas in the works, but haven't thought too long term on the booking for any of the titles." I answered. "Well luckily we don't have to think too long term about the Texas belt. 'Cause you know, I'm an eight-time champion. Ain't never been American champion, ain't really been the belt for me, you know? The Texas belt, though... You know, there ain't never been a better champion than me for Texas. You ain't never seen a bigger draw, too, I reckon. And I know Gino is champ now, but... I think Gino could take a step back. Give us all some breathing room. Besides, what better way to return to beautiful Texas than David making his homecoming and taking back the belt that means so much to the people?" Finally, the first wind of politicking. Took long enough. "You know David, I like what you're saying. It's definitely been on my mind, no doubt." He cut me off swiftly. "I know you like that idea, because it's my idea. And I'm sure you'll find all my ideas are great ideas, agreed? I've been on top of this shibang for quiet some time, and I reckon nothing will change about that once I get back in front of my fans. So let that one stir and get back to me about what you're thinking. I've got a fine glass of whiskey on the rocks I need to stir myself and attend to, so let's pick this back up soon, alright?" David was coming across as dominant. It was clear he was sending me a message. David was my ticket in, and if he wanted to, he could cash my ticket out. Luckily for me, the man signing my checks needed me for one thing: getting David back and saving his business from imminent doom. Certainly nothing that hadn't crossed my mind before, but I knew I was walking in a mindfield. "Sounds great to me Dave. You take care now." I said. "Adios! Or as they like to say in Japan, Sayōnara!" A big laugh faded out as the phone hung up. As I got up, the thoughts raced through my head. Was David always this ruthless? Was he even being ruthless? What he was saying... made sense, but, the way he was asking... He wasn't even really asking, just, telling it like how it was going to be... And I'm sure with enough thought, any of the other boys could quickly pick-up what was going to happen if I let David's booking control my own... At this point I had to tread carefully. Sink or swim, what a surprise... But although the days continued to pass, business didn't stop. We had to get ready for the big Friday night show and also prep for TV production. I moved on to reviewing the cards...

Predition Cards Author's Note: In real life WCCW was running multiple shows per week, just like most territories. Unfortunately I don't really have the time or attention span to book that long, nor is it financially feasible in the game data. Therefore, I have chosen one house show per week to represent the biggest house show of that week. Meanwhile, IRL, WCCW television in the mid 80's was simply the best footage from various house shows, intermingled with taped promos from the talent, and the show was hosted by Bill Mercer. I will try to follow a simliar format for what I can at this point. First show, up next!

 17.
“I don’t know about these guys. I just, I just… I never heard of ‘em!” I could tell Fritz was frustrated. I had lost his control on things, and was giving someone else a shot at making the call on talent. Unfortunately for me, I was the guy taking over. “That’s the point Fritz!” I was getting more bold. Things were seemingly going well for me. I had met a lot of the guys on the roster already, getting introduced backstage at a late December house show. This time, it was Noon on a Tuesday, and I was in the office of Fritz Von Erich, just me and the old man. I realized how incredibly lucky I was able to get some one-on-one time in with Fritz, nobody else in his ear. Just me, convincing him of the world I saw before me, and what he had at his disposal in the business he had been running. At this point I considered myself a consultant. But to others… “There you are you sumbitch!” The office door swung open! It hit the wall behind it and rattled the shelves, but nothing was going to shake as much as Dallas, Texas when it first laid its eyes on the man in the doorway. “David! I thought you were in tomorrow!” Fritz exclaimed. His eyes were wide open. It was the first time he had laid eyes on his eldest in half a year, probably longer apart than they had ever been. I, personally, hadn’t seen David in person in a couple of years, and at the start of 1985, he was standing before me looking more battleworn, more grizzled, but still in command of any room he entered. It wasn’t his father he was concerned about, however. Instead, David walked right up to me and wrapped his bigs arms all the way around. “Haven’t seen you in years pal! How ‘ya been? Hear your the big guy in charge around here now! Is that true?” David said. I was turning red, realizing where I stood in this moment. “Yeah Dave, maybe not as big as you, but, maybe a bit bigger than when you last saw me.” I humorously patted my belly. “Nah man, you look great! Are you kidding? I know you’ve been hitting the gym, or what, have you gone soft on me?” I could feel the tension in Fritz on the other side of the room. He tried to chime in, “Dav-” “And hell, now that you’re carrying the book, ain’t no weight or muscle heavier than that, ‘ya hear? You know what they do in Japan to get the book? Things you wouldn’t believe! Consider yourself lucky, got that?” David continued, not paying any mind to his father. But Fritz wasn’t having it. “David, I’d like to speak to you alone, son.” I could hear it in his voice. Fritz was controlling. He was dominating. But I knew he was missing David, and had something to say about their falling out last summer. I respectfully dismissed myself from the room, leaving the father and son alone. Gathering my notes, I proceeded to make my way out of the room, when David smacked his hand on my shoulder and stopped me in my path. “We’re gonna do big things now, you better believe it.” He said. “I know, Dave. I know.” I smiled back. Excitement jolted through my body as the door closed behind me. Again, it hit me, I couldn’t believe I was in the position I was in, and I owed much of it to David. Hell, I owed all of it to David… But it was either sink or swim from the get-go, and I knew it was only up to me to stay afloat. Exiting to my car, I opened up my notes and took another glimpse at the list of guys I had convinced Fritz to give the OK2SIGN on. Guys I have had my eye on in the wrestling circuit for sometime now. Guys I thought could give the World Class roster more depth and fresh flavor too. I didn’t want just the same old, same old flooding the ring. I wanted fresh faces, fresh ideas, guys that would thrive in the World Class setting. And tomorrow, Fritz and I would start making the calls… At the top I wrote down, “Call tomorrow:” Rick Steiner - Talented amateur from Michigan Scott Hall - Great look, athletic big guy in Minnesota Tom Zenk - Good looking rookie out of Minnesota Hercules Hernandez - The unmasked “Mr. Wrestling II” in Mid-South Terry Taylor - Underdog babyface out of Mid-South Vader - Intriguing big guy out of Minnesota Rick Rude - Turning heads in Florida wrestling Nick Busick - Decent heel fodder out of Georgia Robert Gibson and Ricky Morton - Rising babyface tag partners out of Tennessee and Mid-South Randy Savage - Very interesting talent out of Indiana Mick Foley - Super passionate young brawler out of the New York area Davey Boy Smith - Good looking babyface from up in Calgary Owen Hart - One of Stu Hart’s kids, Davey insisted as a travel partner...

World Class could be something more than what it was now. It could be something big, something special. I mean, it was already those things, but they swelled only to the size of Texas. I was thinking on a more...national scale. “You know, nobody’s talked to me about this before.” Fritz remarked. I couldn’t believe it. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has talked to him about the prospect of going national? Not even one of the kids? Not Ken Mantell? I was shocked. “It’s crossed my mind. Of course I want to be bigger, I want to be the best. I’m just not sure if it’s going to happen.” He was being honest with me. “Listen Fritz, you have to be real here. There is a ticking timebomb on your company. You might think the gates and the attendance is strong now. But what about in five-years? What about ten?” I expressed. “Well, god damnit, we were here five years ago. Ten years ago, what do you mean? My boys are young, they’re just getting started! We’re not going nowhere!” He was getting red. “Fritz, no, Fritz, listen please. Hear me out here... You’ve seen what’s been going on in New York… Vince is out, his son is in. And you’ve seen what he did to Verne in Minnesota. He’s destroyed him. I don’t care what Verne says, or any of his boys up there in Minny. They’re done, just look at the names. Hogan. Heenan. Ventura. Patera. Okerlund. All took the money and ran. Verne wasn’t willing to pay out and couldn’t seize his chance. Instead, he’s too interested in himself and what was. It’s not about how things were anymore, it’s about where things are going.” I had Fritz’ ears. “Now see what he’s doing. He’s starting to book shows in the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia... “ “Texas…” Fritz tacked on. “Texas! That’s right! And he’s only going to move faster. Cable TV, it’s a big deal Fritz, I’m telling you, it’s going to be your lifeline if you play this right. I think you can do it Fritz, I think you can get yourself a TV deal you need to stay toe-to-toe with Vince, but the opportunities aren’t going to come often Fritz. I think we need to be smart here, and ride the waves of what Vince has been doing. I think we can get some interest here soon, but we need to think bigger. Not only do we need to perform for the people of Texas, but we need to start performing for the rest of the country Fritz. And we need to start thinking ahead. Who’s next on Vince’s list? Gino? Jake? Chris?” “Ah, Gino would never leave me!” “No? He wouldn’t? Let me ask you… is Gino driving a nicer car than five years ago? Wearing a nicer suit? Hanging out with nicer ladies? That all comes at a price Fritz, and you better believe Vince has the checkbook to pay something you just won’t have when that day comes.” … Fritz sat in a bit of silence, processing what I was telling him. I don’t think he was lying when he said no one has had this sort of conversation before. I could see the wheels spinning inside. He was probably feeling a wide mix of emotions, and I didn’t blame it. The threat was real, and I think everyone except the big dogs in the business could feel it. I knew Fritz was comfortable, just like the rest of the old boys club. They had been working the same towns, in the same arenas, under the same banner for years, wherever you went. But the writing on the wall was becoming clear… Vince was working his way up to the first-ever “WrestleMania”, and who knows what the hell that means. It was going to be a pay-per-view event “for the ages”, and celebrities were getting involved. Cyndi Lauper. Mr. T. More people besides what wrestling knew and was, and it was going to pay dividends for McMahon if all went well… But for Fritz? His shares were falling, and fast. He didn’t know it, nobody else seemed to pay any mind to it as long as they were getting paid. But me? I was thinking longer, bigger, than what anyone else was. Besides, what did I have to lose?
