WWWF: Re-writing History: No Hulk/No Vince (D.O.T.T)

Recommended Posts

Gidday mate, am reading along with this one. Very interesting take, no Hulk Hogan is one thing, no Vinnie Mac Jr another thing altogether. I wonder what JCP would have done without Vince McMahon Jr going on the nationalisation process, whether JCP has enough foresight to grow beyond the allowed boundaries of the NWA out of the Mid Atlantic.

Thats what I'm hoping for... I grew up a fan of JCP and really didn't get into WWF to much, because I didn't like Hogan... I hope in my game world MACW rises to National levels, as I plan to kind of keep put in the Northeast for now... I'm also curious how the AWA will do with Hulk, since I have no plans on signing him at this point.

As far as Andre goes, he certainly is an enigma, that also will be a challenge to utilize correctly.

Thanks for reading Tristram

PWI Weekly: April: Week 3

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d43/cpevans31/PWI.jpg

Wrestling news from around the world with Pro Wrestling Illustrated Weekly

WWWF: the new ownership group has really expanded its roster adding alot of undercard talent in recent weeks... "Iron" Mike Sharpe, Rene Goulet, Pete Doherty, The Moondogs, Terry Gibbs, Steve Travis jst to name a few who have been fighting it out on the undercard and in television matches... Rick Martel and Paul Orndorff have also debuted recently... Word is a few other big stars are set to join in the coming weeks.. The WWWF also is re-working its broadcast team... Nothing is finalized yet but Gene Okerlund and Gorilla Monsoon really seem to have good chemistry working on TNT to gether... Lord Alfred Hayes has gone to interview segments in the WWWF event center and recently signed Dick Graham has yet to be assigned... An influx of managers are also expected in coming weeks as well. The WWWF is set to have their first big show under the new ownership group next Saturday at Madison Square Garden... And a very bg month in May, with shows at The Sectrum in Philadelphia, The Boston Garden and again wrapping up the month with another event in Madison Square Garden.

MACW: Mid Atlantic has been struggling recently... There have been reports that their show on TBS is in jeopardy of being canceled and we have seen 2major championships change hands first Terry Funk and Jos Leduc captured NWA world tag titles from Jay Youngblood & Ricky Steamboat and then Jay bounced back in singles to capture the US title from Greg Valentine. It also seems that Jack Brisco has been up to no no good and could be in line for a heel run.

GCW: Also still in jeopardy of losing their television deal with TBS.. Recently we saw Road Warrior Hawk defeat King Kong Bundy for the National TV championship.. Paul Orndorff has officially severed ties with GCW...

AWA: Has been having some excellent reviews as of late: Nick Bockwinkle's AWA title defense over Baron Von Rascke may be the best match of the year so far in 1983. and he also had a great title defense against Wahoo McDaniel.. Brad Rheighans beat young second generation wrestler Curt Henning for the AWA TV championship...and Ken Patera & Ray Stevens tore the house down against Jerry Blackwell & Hulk Hogan at a recent AWA event.

HCW: Houston Championship Wrestling run by Roy Shire has done a great job of filling out their roster, having signed Larry Zbyszko, Tommy Rich, Gino Hernandez, Dick Slater, The Assasin all in the last week... However they were not as lucky when trying to sign Jerry "The King" Lawler.

MID SOUTH WRESTLING: Kamala defeated the Junkyard Dog for the vacant North American title... Also Butch Reed defeated Jim Neidhardt for the television title...

I'm still not completely up to speed on this era, but I think the best way to learn is to just jump in here.

Jose Luis Rivera vs Charlie Fulton

Just following the crowd. I don't really know anything about these guys.

Ricky Steamboat vs Terry Gibbs

A nice showcase match for the Steamer, to introduce himself to the New York faithful.

"Mr. Unpredictable" Johnny Rodz vs Ricky Martel

When in doubt, I always vote for the Canadian. If nothing else, it leaves me open for a political career.

"Polish Power" Ivan Putski vs "Superstar" Billy Graham

Billy Graham is getting a bit older, but he's still got some value in him. You don't job out former World Champions to Pollacks.

"Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff vs Pedro Morales

This former champ is spending some time on his back, though. Orndorff is a breakout star waiting to happen. I don't think it'll be a long wait, either.

Tito Santana & Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka vs The Masked Superstar & Sgt. Slaughter

I'm thinking we'll see a no contest, leading to a cage match next month, at MSG.

WWWF Tag Title Match: (Challengers) The Invaders vs (Champions) The Samoans Afa & Sika

I've got a soft spot in my heart for the Wild Samoans. I'd like to see them get a nice lengthy run.

WWWF World Title Match: (Challenger) "Magnificent" Muraco vs (Champion) Bob Backlund

A nice match for Muraco, to show that the Intercontinental Champ is on par with the World Champ, but Backlund's got bigger fish to fry, in the future. Muraco will look good, but that's about it.

You really seem to have captured the old-school "feel" with this thing. I love all the little things you include in your event write-ups that just scream old-school: Orndorff's stall tactics before the match & the classic heel spot of making your opponent chase you around on the floor and then attacking him as he rolls back into the ring, The Fink's run-down of future cards, even the check presentation after the battle royal. You definitely know this era, and it gives this diary a truly unique feel.

Nice job on tricking us with the count-out in the Backlund/Muraco match, too. Perfect lead-in to the rematch.

Thanks, for the compliments... Trying to capture the essence of the 80's is what make's writing this fun...It may turn off some readers by having screw job finishes or not having death valley drivers or shooting star presses in match write ups, or long winded promos between two wrestlers in the ring, but then again its 1983

To corroborate your point even further Muraco thinking he won the title by CO is something that I guarantee would have happened in 1983

Rene Goulet beat Steve Travis 6:17 RATED: F+

You could actually hear chants of "Boring" in the crowd as Monsoon tries to put over the match as a young up-and-comer vs The crafty veteran.. Travis shows some nice offens with armdragg takeovers, which Goulet says he was pulling his hair, Goulet then pulls Travis hair to gain advantage and eventually gets the pin by holding Travis tights and by putting his foot on the ropes...

Monsoon hypes this matchup could come down to whoever has the better martial arts skills... Chung Lee uses a nerve hold on the "trapisias muscle" wearing down Steamboat ... Chung Lee further weakens Steamboat with a karate thrush to the throat and Okerlund claims "THAT SHOULD BE A DISQUALIFICATION REF !" Steamboat gets the crowd behind him a delivers a big karate chop on Lee bouncing off the rope...Lee then swings and misses and Steamboat nails an atomic knee drop, climbs the top rope and its high cross body block for the 1...2....3...

Tony Atlas beat "Iron" Mike Sharpe 8:28 RATED: D-

Sharpe interupts Howard Finkel's ring introduction insisting he call him "Canada's greatest athlete... The most impressive thing by Sharpe in this ring is how loud he can yell throughout the match and how he can keep is black forearm brace loaded... The first half of the match is Atlas telling referee Joey Marella, that he saw Sharpe put something in the brace... Monsoon and Okerlund saw it as well prompting Monsoon to yell at the ref, "C'mon Marella, what are you blind!" Sharpe uses it to his advantage, but has to remove it to hide it from the referee... Once he does Atlas goes on the offensive with press slam and a clotheline, then some flexing time which brings Sharpe to his knees begging for mercy... Atlas catches him in a bear hug, but Sharpe lowers the loaded boom again to break it and gets a near fall with his feet on the ropes... Sharpe then misses a charge into the ropes and Atlas hits another slam and a splash for the 1...2...3..

EVENT CENTER: Lord Alfred Hayes with Paul Orndorff talking about tonights main event... "Well you know something Lord Alfred, Rocky Jhnson already has the perfect excuse for when I beat him tonight, and you know what that is, he will have been beaten by a better man... http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d43/cpevans31/SuperstarGraham.jpghttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d43/cpevans31/IvanPutski.jpg

"Superstar" Billy Graham beat "Polish Power" Ivan Putski by CO 4:51 RATED: E

This match didn't even star out as a match as Putski challenge Graham to an arm wrestling contest... Graham agreed and referee Dick Weurhle grabbed a table and two chairs and it was arm wrestling time... Grham stalled taking forever to take off his shirt and kept his sunglasses on the entire contest... Graham got within an inch of beating Putski and "Polish Power" began screaming out loud and made a miraculous comeback as Graham started shaking his head no, because he was stunned Putski could comeback from near defeat... Just as Putski was about to put Billy Graham away, Graham reached across and nailed him with aleft haymaker... Graham would pound away at Putski unmercifully.. Graham would backdrop Putski over the top rope and to the floor and the referee would not see it... thus counting to 10 and declaring Graham the winner by count out.
