WCW 1996: An Even Better Year

Recommended Posts

December 31, 1995

As the banner year of 1995 comes to a close, my WCW is riding a wave of momentum that these wrestlers have never even felt before. For the first time ever, I have brought WCW to a profit and I had the Head of Finance on his hands and knees handing me a dollar bill to seal the bet that was made.

I recently held a meeting with Ted Turner himself and the decision was made and agreed upon by both to bump WCW Monday Nitro to 2 hours instead of 1 and to bump WCW Saturday Night down to 1 hour instead of 2. WCW Main Event is going to be completely done away with for now so that our wrestlers do not get overworked and overtired.

Vince McMahon doesn't seem to have any way to compete with me and especially with Monday Nitro, the most watched show on cable television. And how could he? Nitro brings forth the greatest athletes, the greatest wrestlers that the world has ever seen. Who does he have that can compete with that? The Smoking Gunns? The Bodydonnas? The Undertaker?

Which that reminds me, I need to look at perhaps hiring some new talent, especially tag teams to compete within my tag team division and keep up the high level that teams like Harlem Heat and The Blue Bloods aspire to. But I do have a meeting with Ted Turner following the very first WCW Monday Nitro event of the year so I better wait to contact anyone until that time period.

It's time to pop open a bottle of Dom Perignon and celebrate the new year with my wife and with our good friend Hulk Hogan. There will be more to come and I can guarantee you this: 1996 will be an even better year than 1995.

-Eric Bischoff

((OOC Note: I hope that each and every one of my readers will stay tuned with both this and my USPW diary as I plan on running both side by side with my USPW diary being the main one and getting the most writeups, while this one is a little more of a sideline. Any questions/comments/etc. always welcomed))

Welcome to the most exciting wrestling show coming each and every week: WCW Monday Nitro!

Ric Flair defeated Randy Savage for the WCW World Heavyweight Title at Starrcade with some handy interference by Arn Anderson but tonight the Nature Boy will have to defend that belt against one of Randy Savage's good friends: The Immortal Hulk Hogan! This should be a classic matchup right here on Nitro!

In other action, a member of the Four Horsemen who has been going a little crazy as of late: Brian Pillman will be taking on the man called Sting!

The WCW World Tag Team Titles will be on the line as Harlem Heat defend those straps against the American Males!

Plus more action!

Chris Benoit vs. Alex Wright

Kurasawa vs. Randy Savage

[The show opens up with a video from Starrcade 1995, focusing in on the main event where Ric Flair used a little timely interference from Arn Anderson to capture the WCW World Heavyweight Title from Randy Savage!]

[The cameras pan around the Orlando Arena as Eric Bischoff and Bobby Heenan welcome everyone to WCW Monday Nitro! A quick rundown of the card is given and then it's on to the first match.]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ChrisBenoit.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/AlexWright.jpg

Chris Benoit vs. Alex Wright

[The opening bout here in 1996 on Monday Nitro was a pretty good match between these two great future stars. The match went back and forth with Alex Wright getting a two count after a flying body press. Benoit fired back and hit Alex Wright with a German Suplex plus the bridge, getting the 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Chris Benoit

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RicFlairIV.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ArnAnderson.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ChrisBenoit.jpg

[As Chris Benoit stands in the ring, the music of the Horsemen plays and out from the back walk the two leaders of the group: The WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair and the Enforcer Double A Arn Anderson. They enter the ring and shake hands with Benoit and Flair asks for and receives a microphone.]

Ric Flair

"Everybody here in Orlando Florida has just one question: what's causing all this? Whooooo! You are looking at three of the highest paid wrestlers in WCW's history and with good reason. Brian Pillman is in the back right now getting ready for his match with Sting a little later on but I wanted to come out here and give a little message to the man they call Hulk Hogan. Hulk, pal, you're yesterday's news. You came in to WCW riding a wave of momentum and that momentum has been put to a halt and tonight you're gonna be going backward when I get finished with you. Whooooo. Tonight, we are in Horsemen country here in Orlando Florida. I've got Double A here watching my back and I've got the Crippler here watching my front and there's no two finer men in this business that I'd rather have at my side. So, tonight, Hulk Hogan, I'm gonna pull you to a five star match and the WCW World Title belt will remain where it belongs: with the Horsemen! Whooooo!"

[The music cues up again as the 3 of 4 members of the Horsemen exit the ring.]

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ManabuNakanishi.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RandySavage2.jpg

Kurasawa vs. Randy Savage

[Kurasawa is an import from Japan, taking on a very enraged Macho Man after Macho lost the WCW World Title! Savage was a maniac inside the ring and really got some crowd attention, hitting Kurasawa from all angles. Savage finally finished him off with the Flying Elbow Drop and a pinfall.]

Winner: Randy Savage

Match Rating: C-

[Following the match, Ric Flair stepped out from the back and taunted Randy Savage with the gold! Savage's eyes went wide and he ran toward the back as Ric Flair disappeared backstage. The cameras followed Savage and as soon as he stepped through the curtain he was assaulted by Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit, who both held lead pipes! The beatdown was on, bringing Savage down to the ground and Flair again taunted Savage with the belt to boos from the crowd who were watching on the TurnerTron.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/JimmyHart.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/PaulWight.jpg

[backstage, Jimmy Hart and The Giant held an interview where Jimmy Hart challenged Hulk Hogan on behalf of The Giant to a match at Clash of the Champions! What a matchup that would be!]

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/DeanMalenko.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/JerryLynn2.jpg

Dean Malenko vs. Mr. J.L.

[The crowd was really not interested in this match despite the fact that Malenko put on a good show. Mr. J.L. hit a cross body over the top rope to the outside on Malenko but back in the ring it was all the Shooter. Malenko hit a top rope gutbuster on Mr. J.L. and then locked in the Texas Cloverleaf to get the submission victory.]

Winner: Dean Malenko

Match Rating: D+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/Sting.jpg

[backstage, Sting is standing within an interview area and gets a big cheer from the crowd.]

Sting

"Tonight is a night that I have been waiting for for a long time. Brian Pillman, you were part of a group that screwed the Stinger at Halloween Havoc last year. I have been waiting and biding my time for this and tonight I am going to take my revenge when I make you submit to the Scorpion Deathlock. OWWWWWW!"

[sting beats his chest and turns and walks away as we head back to the ring.]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/BookerT.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/StevieRay.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/MarcusBagwell2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ScottRiggs2.jpg

WCW World Tag Team Titles Match

Harlem Heat defend vs. American Males

[Another match that the crowd didn't care for too much even though it was a World Tag Team Titles Match. Stevie Ray was a little off his game when he was in the ring and got caught by Marcus Bagwell and Scotty Riggs with a double dropkick but Booker T made the save on a pinfall attempt. Booker got the tag in and he eventually hit Riggs with the Missle Dropkick and made the cover, getting the three count.]

Winners: Harlem Heat

Match Rating: D+

[The crowd rises on their feet when instead of Harlem Heat's music, 'Ironman' begins to play! The crowd cheers when the Road Warriors step out from the back complete with spiked shoulderpads. They stand at the top of the ramp and look up toward Harlem Heat.]

Road Warrior Animal

"Take a look and feast your eyes on the two biggest cats walking the face of planet earth. And it's not those two numbnuts inside the ring there. No, it's myself and Hawk over here. And we've got a challenge for you: Harlem Heat! Tell 'em Hawk!"

Road Warrior Hawk

"Weeelllll! It goes something like this: Clash of the Champions, WCW World Tag Team Titles on the line, Harlem Heat defends those belts against the two biggest baddest men walking the planet: The Road Warriors! At the Clash, punks, it's gonna be ohhhhhhhhh what a rush!"

['Ironman' plays again and the Road Warriors head to the back, leaving an angry Harlem Heat.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/HulkHogan.jpg

[backstage within the interview area stands the Immortal Hulk Hogan!]

Hulk Hogan

"Let me tell you something, Hulkamaniacs! Tonight, I will give you your due Ric Flair you are a tough competitor, dude! But you're stepping inside the ring with the man who is immortal. You're stepping inside the ring with each and every one of my Hulkamaniacs, brother! And when I get done with you tonight, when the Hulkster is standing tall, brother, I am going to take my rightful place as WCW World Champion, dude. And I'm gonna do it for the Macho Man and for each and every one of my Hulkamaniacs. And all you're gonna be left with is the answer to one question, brother: whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when the power of Hulk Hogan and all these Hulkamaniacs runs wild over you?!?"

[Hulk flexes and then it's up to the ring.]

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/BrianPillman.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/Sting.jpg

Brian Pillman vs. Sting

[Wow! What a match that maybe should have been moved to the main event it was so good! These two have great chemistry inside the ring and their moves flowed like water. Pillman held the advantage in the early going by using a rake of the eyes and he kept up a fast pace, even hitting Sting with a frankensteiner but only getting a two count! Pillman sent Sting out of the ring and hit a suicide dive, sending Sting against the guardrail in the process. Pillman rammed Sting against the steel steps and then the ring post before sliding him back into the ring. Pillman locked a Sleeper Hold on Sting and Sting was slowly going out as the crowd chanted his name, trying to get him to wake up. As the referee dropped his hand a third time, he was able to keep it up! The crowd stomped their feet and clapped their hands as Sting powered up to his feet and caught Pillman with an elbow shot!

Sting broke free of the hold and dropped Pillman with a backdrop, leaving both men lying on the mat. Sting and Pillman both got up and started trading punches and chops! The crowd was on their feet as Sting started getting the advantage! Sting kicked Pillman in the gut and lifted him up -- hanging vertical suplex sends Pillman to the mat hard! Sting gets up and releases a shout to the crowd, which gets echoed back! Sting pulls Pillman to his feet and whips him into the corner -- STINGER SPLASH!!! Pillman takes two steps forward and falls to the mat! Sting grabs the legs -- SCORPION DEATH LOCK! The Scorpion connects and Pillman has no choice but to submit!]

Winner: Sting

Match Rating: A

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RicFlairIV.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ArnAnderson.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/BrianPillman.jpg

[Following the match, Ric Flair and Arn Anderson come out from the back, heading toward the ring. Sting releases the hold and is ready to head them off at the pass.]

Arn Anderson

"Whoa there Stinger. Just step out of the ring and we'll let you pass. This isn't about you. This is Horsemen business."

[sting isn't so sure about that but he does eventually exit the ring and keeps an eye on the Horsemen as he walks by. Flair and Anderson slide into the ring and help Pillman up.]

Arn Anderson

"This is not an enviable position that I am being put in, Brian. The fact of the matter is that you have been a loose cannon as of late. Your focus has not been where it needs to be and that is on Horsemen business. Brian, Ric and myself have come to a decision. You're out. You're out of the Horsemen, Brian Pillman."

[brian's eyes go wide and he drops to his knees, begging not to be released from the Horsemen!]

Arn Anderson

"I am going to give you a choice, Brian. Because you have been a Horsemen, you are going to be given the opportunity to walk out of this building alive. We won't touch you...tonight. But you should feel very lucky that you are getting this opportunity, Brian. Not many men do."

[Arn and Ric stepped aside to let Brian Pillman exit the ring. Brian looked between the two of them for a moment and stepped forward and then punched Flair! Flair chopped him in return and Arn grabbed his arms, letting Flair lay into Pillman's chest with those hard knife edge chops! Chris Benoit stepped from the back and walked toward the ring. Arn released Pillman and Flair kicked him below the belt! Pillman dropped to his knees and Arn picked him up, whipping him into the ropes -- SPINEBUSTER! Flair grabs Pillman's legs and hooks in the Figure 4 Leglock! Pillman cries out in pain -- DIVING HEADBUTT! Chris Benoit came off the top rope with that diving headbutt to the chest of Pillman! After several minutes of the Figure 4, the hold is released and Ric, Arn and Benoit throw up the four fingers...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/HulkHogan.jpg

[backstage, Hulk Hogan is...walking! Why? Because the main event is next!]

Match #6

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RicFlairIV.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/HulkHogan.jpg

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match

Ric Flair defends vs. Hulk Hogan

[The rest of the Horsemen remained at ringside as 'American Made' brought the Immort Hulk Hogan down to the ring to cheers from the crowd! Hulk ripped off his shirt and got even more cheers, pointing toward the Nature Boy!

This match was full of the usual begging off by Flair and breaking up the momentum of Hogan by going outside the ring. Several times Hogan followed Flair outside and Flair rolled in quickly and stomped on Hogan before he could get to his feet. Flair focused on the legs of Hogan as Flair is apt to do. He put Hogan's leg on the bottom rope and then came down to crush it. Flair was dominant throughout much of this match and drew some boos when he played to the crowd. Flair set up Hogan for the Figure 4 but Hogan reversed it into a roll-up...

1...

2...

KICKOUT!

So close to a new World Champion! Flair got back up and put the boots to Hogan. He continued to focus on the legs of Hogan to keep the powerful man down. The crowd cheered and got behind Hogan, chanting his name when Flair locked on a Sleeper. Hogan quickly reversed it into a backdrop and started shaking as he went into his Hulk Up! He absorbed punches and chops from the Nature Boy as he got to his feet and felt the power of the Hulkamaniacs running through his veins! Then he pointed at Flair and wagged his finger at him! He blocked a punch and threw three of his own He sent Flair into the ropes -- BIG BOOT! Hogan cupped his ear to a good crowd ovation and then bounced off the ropes -- TRIPPED BY ARN ANDERSON! The referee saw it and immediately called for the bell.]

Winner: Hulk Hogan (via DQ)

Match Rating: B

[Arn reached inside the ring and pulled Flair out as The Giant came out from the back. The Horsemen distracted Hogan for long enough that the Giant could enter the ring and he attacked Hogan from behind! The Horsemen took off up the ramp as The Giant beat down Hogan and then locked him around the throat -- CHOKE SLAM!! The Giant choke slams Hogan and then roars to boos from the crowd, standing over his Clash opponent as the show comes to a close!]

Tuesday, Week 1, January 1996

I had my meeting last evening with Ted Turner. He said that he is going to be taking more of an interest in the company. I'm not entirely sure that that is a good thing or not. I hope he doesn't stifle my own creativity. He put some rules set forth about who I can and cannot hire and re-sign. He seems to be sick of the WWF wrestlers and there have been threats of lawsuits by Vince McMahon so he said I cannot hire any WWF wrestlers for now. (You cannot hire anybody who already works for a promotion of Cult size or above.)

He also said that he wants the wrestlers that I bring in to be tough enough to survive the daily grind yet also know the basics of wrestling. He also said that anyone who doesn't fit that mold can no longer be within the company when their contract expires. (cannot hire or extend any wrestler who has less than C- in Toughness, less than B- in Basics)

He also said it's important to compete with Vince McMahon and in order to do that the company cannot fall any worse than where it is already at. (not fall below International size.)

Earlier today, I had a meeting with some of my scouts on some possible wrestlers coming in to WCW and I am also looking to trim some of the chaff that's already here. These wrestlers better hope they can impress me.

Road Warriors vs. Men At Work Road Warriors are a better tag team, I think they should get the win here.

WCW World Television Title Match: Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Disco Inferno Pulling for the probable underdog.

WCW United States Title Match: One Man Gang defends vs. Sgt. Craig Pittman Great big man, he'll do well with that title.

Jim Duggan vs. Eddy Guerrero Again you'll probably give Eddy the win, but Duggan can still go for a good few years,

Sting vs. Big Bubba Rogers Sting is the superior worker, and should win this comfortably.

[A video played showing Brian Pillman's oust from the Horsemen. Then the focus came inside the ring where Brian Pillman showed up holding up a cane!]

Brian Pillman

"This is just in case those Horsemen decide to attack me with lead pipes. Ric Flair, I never wanted to be a Horsemen! I was forced into the situation by the Booker Man! But now that I'm out I'm gonna do everything that I can to make your life a living hell! I'm gonna knock out Arn Anderson! I'm gonna knock out Chris Benoit! The Horsemen are a dead organization! And I want a match with you Ric Flair this Monday on Nitro! Show up unless you are the coward that I know you are."

[Pillman laughs and flashes the Four Horsemen symbol but then turns it upside down. He then heads out of the ring, hitting the guardrail in front of a fan with his cane, laughing and walking to the back.]

Match #4

Jim Duggan vs. Eddy Guerrero

[Duggan got the U.S.A. chant going when he first came out to the ring. The crowd cheered him on as he used his brawling skills against the high flying and technical wrestling of Eddy Guerrero. The match went back and forth until Guerrero dodged the 2 point stance shoulderblock and rolled up Duggan. Guerrero used his feet on the ropes and got the upset victory!]

Winner: Eddy Guerrero

Match Rating: C-

[Following the match, Guerrero fled and out came the Blue Bloods. Earl Robert grabbed the 2X4 from ringside and hit Duggan with it, knocking him back down and Regal hooked in the Regal Stretch while Robert and Squire David Taylor stomped on Duggan while the crowd booed! Tony Schiavone and Dusty Rhodes wondered just why the attack.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/Sting.jpg

[backstage, Sting is standing within an interview area facing the camera.]

Sting

"Take a good long look right here Big Bubba Rogers because when we meet in the ring in just a few moments you won't be able to keep up with me. Tonight, it's Big Bubba Rogers and at Clash of the Champions I want the One Man Gang for the United States title. Savage already has Flair, so One Man Gang step inside the ring with the Stinger. Take a good long look at the match tonight with Big Bubba because that's going to be your future. OWWWWWW!"

[sting turns and walks off to head to the ring. The main event is next!]

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/Sting.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/BigBubbaRogers.jpg

Sting vs. Big Bubba Rogers

[big Bubba Rogers actually held his own in this match with the Stinger. The crowd was slightly surprised as Bubba held Sting down with several chokes in the middle of the ring and hit his Bubba Slam but only got a two count! Lex Luger came down to ringside to garner up support for his best friend! The crowd began cheering for Sting as Bubba locked in a revrse chinlock and Sting used the support to fight his way to his feet!

Sting hit Bubba with a few elbow shots to break the hold, bounced off the ropes and Bubba ducked a clothesline but Nick Patrick didn't! Referee Nick Patrick went down and Sting turned around into a Big Bubba clothesline! Bubba dropped an elbow and made a cover but there was no one to count! Bubba moved over to shake the referee as Lex Luger got up on the apron and slid into the ring behind Big Bubba! Bubba turned back toward Sting and he got hit by Lex Luger! Bubba collapsed to the mat and it was easy to tell that Luger hit Bubba with a roll of quarters! Several of them fell on the mat. But Luger pulled Sting over into a cover and woke up the referee. Nick Patrick raised his hand and made the count: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Sting

Match Rating: C+

[Luger helped Sting to his feet following the victory but he had no idea that Luger helped him! Sting looked down at the mat and he picked up one of the quarters, asking Luger what this is. Luger denied any foul play and raised Sting's arm but Sting looked mighty confused as the show went off the air.]

What a lineup we have for WCW Monday Nitro! This could be the set up of a pay-per-view!

In the main event, Brian Pillman is set to go one on one with the WCW World Champion Ric Flair for the WCW World Title! Can the former Horseman win the gold from the leader of the pack?

The Horsemen won't only be in that match but Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit will be in tag action against the American Males.

Also, the Macho Man Randy Savage steps into the ring with the leader of the Dungeon of Doom: Kevin Sullivan!

Plus more action!

Kevin Sullivan vs. Randy Savage

Scott Norton vs. The Gambler

Cobra vs. Disco Inferno

WCW World Television Title Match: Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Dean Malenko

American Males vs. Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Brian Pillman

I had completely forgotten all about Sgt. Craig Pittman until I saw him here in the diary!

I like the Blue Bloods attacking Hacksaw. It sets up a nice WCW Saturday Night feud for them. All though I would not want to see it on Nitro.:D

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I loved the Pitbull when he first came out but he has languished in the midcard for such a long time that he's gotten lost in the shuffle.

Thanks for the words on the Blue Bloods/Hacksaw feud. I think it's one I might very well enjoy.

Kevin Sullivan vs. Randy Savage As much as I like Kevin Sullivan there is noway he is beating Randy Savage.

Scott Norton vs. The Gambler Wow this match is probably going to suck!:D

Cobra vs. Disco Inferno I consider myself to be a WCW fan but for the life of me I can not remember who Cobra was.

WCW World Television Title Match: Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Dean Malenko This is a tough one because I am pretty sure that Johnny will win but I am going to go with Dean anyway.

American Males vs. Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit I hated the American Males back then and I still hate them now. And plus AA is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time.

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Brian Pillman

I have to go with Ric.
