The Video Game Thread

I was a fan of The Darkness comics and I wasn't head-over-heels for The Darkness FPS video game they made but I did get through it and enjoyed it to a degree.

I bought the second one for $10 on Amazon it's... worth $10? Not great but certainly not bad. The story is badass but I mean, it really is just you mowing through enemies with little variance between them.

I saw KoA was off too, but played it back in the day on 360 and somehow quit playing. But it was release at a BAD time, where I had tons of games to play. Now I'm pretty much all out, and hesitated. It was definitely good, but not all that special. But I should've picked it up, me having tons of RA. Salvatore books on the shelf. Maybe the summer sales. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I got it too, not had a lot of time to put into it yet but I love what I've seen of the world so far. (I've played up to where you first meet the Fateweaver (twice, because I didn't like my race selection the first time)).

The combat is interesting (not 'hard' even on hard difficulty, but I'm not really interested in games that are 'hard' anyway).

Horrific voice acting for the most part, but meh. :p

Also, anyone played Rymdkapsel (stupid name for a game :p)?

From what I've seen, it looks like someone saw Spacebase DF9 and thought "y'know, we could do that and rush it out a lot quicker if we didn't bother with graphics and dialogue..."

People's time is scarce nowadays, and you don't want to spend hours learning a game unless it's damn well worth the effort. And usually... it isn't. If it's a mediocre game, and people can't get past a certain point without hours of pondering and trial-and-error gameplay, they'll say: "screw you guys, I'm... playing another game". The game will get blasted on the internet, number of purchases will drop, and that's that. At least with contemporary games that's the case. Earlier it was a different story. Games needed to be hard, or you could finish them in an hour.

Well Rymdkapsel, while released a month after DF9, was released as a finished product on android one month after DF9's "alpha". Rymdkapsel was conceived and shown publicly first. It was well hyped and has been very well received on android.

If anything, DF-9 ripped IT off. In reality, rymdkapsel is kinda a ripoff of Dungeon Keeper anyway so it's all a wash :-)

Both games bring their own unique gameplay elements though so I can recommend both easily. If you're into that formula there's things in both games I'd think you could enjoy. Calling them the same game is tantamount to saying Call of Duty and Battlefield are the same thing. To people who care less about the genre, that may be the case. But to people into those games they aren't all that much alike at all.

I think that's probably more indicative of the types of people who play those games though - they tend to be the folks who will get into a game and just HAMMER it for months on end, and they love deep, deep games like that.

I'm currently caught in gaming limbo - I'm looking for work at the moment, so I have pretty much all day sat around not doing much with my time, and can I find anything I want to play?!

Nothing AAA particularly interests me at the moment (I'm sniffing around Assassin's Creed IV, but I'm waiting until it drops in price before buying it), and all the indie games I'm currently interested in playing are early access, and I'm trying to avoid buying them for fear of burning out on them before the full game's released.

I know exactly what'll happen - I get a new job, and then they finish a bunch of games I've been waiting for, so I'll have no time to play them! <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I picked up TEW 2013 to try and fill the time void, as I've been following WWE again for a while now, but I probably made a bad pick with my starting promotion (21CW), and it's taking me a long time to get any momentum together, so it's a bit of a chore at the moment. I could just start again with another promotion, but then that would feel like a waste of all the time I've spent on this one!

I get like that myself. I've been part time / per diem in my job for two years so when work's slow and I'm not getting shifts of course there's nothing i want to play. When work's abundant all I think about is getting home in front of my precious consoles and/or PC. I think what happens for me is it's anxiety. When I'm not working I can't help but let life's problems creep into my head. Am I going to get my bills paid? Is this all there is? Can I make money elsewhere? Should I go back to school? Etc.

I try to relax when it's time to relax. I keep myself productive in other ways like looking for other gigs, cleaning, and doing house work so that when it's time to play I feel more like I "earned" the play time. Works for me. Usually. Sometimes I can't help but let negativity creep in.

On Assassin's Creed 4 I didn't love it. I didn't get very far because I rented it and gave up pretty quick. I have been down on the series for awhile now though. The "one button to rule them all" thing with the right trigger drives me insane. There's literally no reason for that control scheme anymore. You hold down Right trigger you run and jump. All well and good. But it's the same button as peaking around a wall, which you automatically attach to if you happen to run into it or (depending on the wall). Which happens all the time in these damn games, especially in this one where there seems to be a lot of chasing.

The whole point of the "one button" platforming system was to make the platforming simplified in the first Assassin's Creed game. That was literally it's aim, so that you felt like you were making difficult jumps but you really aren't. Your objectives used to be clear and it was fairly obvious which buildings you could and couldn't climb. This game has a lot more platforming and in an effort to be more immersive everything is more "natural" looking. The tradeoff is there were a few too many times where you don't quite know where to jump and which ledge your character decided to catch and which ones he wont and kill you. At least for me. Maybe I'm just dumb, but I couldn't stand the platforming in this game. And there's A LOT more of it here than in previous games. One of the nice things is that there's little to no death penalty except the length of loading times (at least on the XBOX One). Oh, and for an XBox One game it kinda looks like crap.

I also feel like there were a few other instances of deep annoyance. Like in combat where instead of making the enemy AI smarter or stronger they gimp the player, which takes away that "feeling like a badass" that the game used to be going for. The boat stuff is cool and all but it's kind of mountainous. Same stuff over and over again. No real challenge to it just the nuisance of maneuvering yourself into a position to kill your enemies quickly. This once original and thought provoking series has suffered from the "lets dump out one a year and make some cash" mentality and it's become average at best.

So upon realising that I was still paying Blizzard a subscription for World of Warcraft despite having not played it for over a year, I signed into my Battle.net account to cancel it, and noticed that their new card game has been released to open beta. It's called Hearthstone and plays like any other battle / strategy card game, but I'm quite enjoying it. For those that ain't seen it, I'll give you a few details.

You get a class (you can't choose a name or anything, it's just the 'head card'), and once you have done the tutorial you have access to the 'Play' and 'Practice' modes. The latter is obviously just against the AI, while the Play mode is split into Casual and Ranked. I'm yet to play Ranked as I'm still coming to grips with the game.

You get quests to complete and they have to be done in Play mode, but most can be done in either Casual or Ranked. As you level your card up it will gain more class specific abilities, and you'll earn gold from the quests to buy new card packs. 100G will get you one pack of five cards, and each pack has at least one 'rare or better' card. You can spend real money to buy new packs but I don't really feel that it's necessary unless you're desperate to have a massive collection of cards, although you can only have 30 in your deck at once anyway.

You can unlock other classes by beating them, either in Play or Practice, and then when you unlock them they start at level 1 and you have to build them too. The game is still in beta, so I'm not sure if there'll be any more changes too it, probably not. Oh, and it's free to play, which is nice. You just have to download the client, which I think was a couple hundred megabytes. I want to say it was about 250MB, but don't quote me on that. If anyone else is playing it, or is interested, I'm in the European server, and you can add my battle.net account via my user name RayW1986 or my email address raywilson1986@hotmail.co.uk. Overall, I'm enjoying it.

Hearthstone is indeed a fine game. I've been a vivid cardgamer for years now, and the mechanics, though often stolen (let's say borrowed) from other games, fit well within the frame. I played it back when it was in a closed beta months ago, but found it wasn't all that balanced. I played Mage, the default class, and had a pretty speedy deck. Hunterdecks were a little too good though, but apparently, it's been properly balanced now. I'm not playing anymore, but it's still a good game. It's also no real Pay2Win, as the rares and mythics aren't all that anyway. Great presentation as well.

I am however looking forward to another game, which is basically the same. It's called HEX, but the open beta hasn't started yet. :(

I'm sure I read when it was first announced that it was going to remain free. I don't feel it suites a monthly subscription, and if they charge for that plus card packs it's a little over kill, if you ask me. I have 7 of the 9 classes now. Pretty pleased with it overall. It's making me want to play World of Warcraft again.

EDIT: Make that 8/9 <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> Just the Warlock to unlock now.

It's supposed to serve as the central point of their gaming program. Expect tournaments to feature prizes in the form of unlockable items for all their other games, encouraging the player to buy boosters and better their deck, eventually resulting in more sales at some point.

The way it is now it's perfectly playable without any investment at all, as long as you play on a daily basis for an hour or something.

In any event, the game is well made (like I said: based on a lot of other cardgames) and easy to play. I wrote a guide for beginners, but it's in Dutch though. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Thoughts on the Titanfall beta so far:

1) I found that I, in the words of the great Chael Sonnen, "absolutely suck" at FPS games anymore. I was never GOOD, but I wasn't running around a dying for 15 minutes at a time either.

2) Once I got the hang of what I'm doing, it's incredibly fun. Moreso than CoD or Battlefield. For me anyway. But I find every single CoD/Battlefield game since Cod: Modern Warfare to be virtually identical with limited changes in each game so I'm not the best person to talk about this with.

3) There's a weird control drift that sees me banking to the left every now and then. it's not a big deal as it doesn't happen all the time and you're constantly moving anyway so i normally don't notice it. But it caused me death a few times.

4) It's not the "ZMOG GAME CHANGING FPS" Xbox wants you to believe it is.

The new GDS Gladiator game, on the brick of release, reminded me of Gladius, a PS2-generation game I played through once (GC), but didn't quite enjoy thàt much as I bought it in Germany and there wasn't a language option (sheisse!). Some searching located a supposed copy of the game at a store here for just 5€. I might get it if it's actually there. The game was turn-based strategy where you moved around your team of gladiators around a grid-like arena with high and low ground. There was some rock-paper-scissors involved and it wasn't superdeep, but it was loads of fun nontheless.

Finally tried Bioshock Infinite too and was pleasantly surprised by its flavour. Not a game you want to complete asap, but I want to complete it. That's an achievement in and of itself. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

A next-gen version of that would be awesome. Simple, yet deeply customizable gameplay. I like those kind of games. Kinda like Ogre Battle 64, which I should finish one day (thank god for ROMs or EU never would've seen this game).
