Having received a great deal of e-mails from our British readers bemoaning the lack of UK wrestling coverage, long time freelance contributor and author Dan Davis will be writing a regular column for us each month looking at the UK wrestling scene. Any questions can be addressed to dan.davis@pwn.com. (Note: this column is a week earlier than usual due to New Years Eve.)

1# 13.30PM Sunday Week 3, December 2009

Welcome to the first in a new monthly column - The Battle of Britain! So, I hear you ask, whose battling? Well, I answer, it’s the wrestling promotions of the United Kingdom! While they may lack the glamour and star power of SWF and TCW, the UK promotions offer some great action and talented grapplers you may not see elsewhere.

The aim of this column is to update you, the reader, with the goings on in Blighty. With this in mind, I want this column to be the ‘foreword’ of my chronicle of UK Wrestling and update us with the state of play coming into the New Year.

21CW – The undoubted leaders of the British Wrestling scene, 21CW offer sports entertainment and a vastly talented roster. While some die hard wrestling fans have lost faith in the company since Geoff Nova’s takeover – in ring quality has noticeably dipped since the change – the improved production and episodic TV programming have brought in a new audience. Going into 2010, the question is can 21CW keep the in ring action up to par with the glossy presentation?

MOSC – It’s been tragic to see the fall of MOSC. Once at the forefront of British (and indeed, European) wrestling, MOSC now survives month to month and simply cannot compete with the glitzy 21CW financially or creatively. With talk of a cash injection there is hope for the future - however the retirement of The Highland Warrior means it’s a future that will need new stars. The ethos of the company (no frills, affordable violence) has always worked, it’s simply a case of whether the company can move beyond the McPeterson dominated recent past and build the new stars that will allow it to shine.

ROF – The little company that could, ROF has actually thrived since 21CW went ‘Supernova’ (please forgive the pun). Unlike MOSC, ROF replaced the stars it lost and budgeted wisely. As a result it is in the improbable position of being the UK’s no. 2 promotion. Can this progress be maintained? With a hardcore group of fans and, in my opinion, the best UK technical wrestler in Merle O’Curle on the roster, ROF will always survive. I believe to grow, it will need to show more creative spark and find ‘that’ star that the UK public will pay to see.

So there you have it. Will 21CW become the total package by improving it’s in ring work? Will MOSC ever push anyone without the surname McPeterson? Will ROF find a big draw to go with their fantastic in ring product?

Until next month,

Dan Davis

Story and transcript by Dan Davis (10.20AM Tues Week 4, December 2009)

While ROF has seen some great main events over the previous months, a question regarding the return of a man who had contributed many great main event performances had been lingering. Having the opportunity to speak with that man, ROF founder Geordie Jimmy Morris, answered many questions….

Dan Davis – “Good afternoon Jimmy, thanks for your time today!”

Geordie Jimmy Morris – “Nay bother”

DD – “So the question many ROF fans have been asking is – are you ever going to return? It’s been nearly three years since you came back from Japan.”

GJM – “I got no plans to return to that company”

DD – “That’s…actually a bit of a surprise. Can I ask why?”

GJM – “Well…it’s for personal and business reasons. I feel that, business wise, it makes no sense to return to a company that…is content on just surviving.”

DD – “Considering the dominance of 21CW though, surely survival is a great goal for ROF?”

GJM – “Sure, but how can ROF take on 21CW with the pure style of wrestling? There needs to be more. One of the reasons I went to Japan was to break away from that.”

DD – I grant you that the ‘pure’ style, as you put it, isn’t likely to attract the casual fan. Still, ROF provided great in ring action throughout 2009. Why would you want to, as you put it, break away from that?”

GJM – “As you said – ‘in ring action’. There needs to more to the product than that. I believe to fight 21CW and prosper, there needs to be more thrills, in and out of the ring”

DD – “Thrills in ring? Do you mean a more adventurous style?”

GJM – “Yes, spot on. ROF has great catch as catch can wrestling, but that only appeals to a small audience”

DD – So where does that leave you? Also, you mentioned personal reasons, can you elaborate?

GJM – “Well…I don’t want to bring up the past….I guess me and British Samurai have some ‘respect issues’”

DD – “I sense that you don’t want to go in to details-“

GJM – “Correct.”

DD – “I can respect that…so, what does the future hold for the ‘Geordie Warrior?’

GJM – “A fresh start…while Japan didn’t really work out, I learned that…life’s too short to not take chances. I’m looking to book for a new company in the New Year…High Impact Wrestling.”

DD – “Wow! Stop the presses, eh?”

GJM – (laughs) “I guess I had an ulterior motive for doing this interview.”

DD – “Well, thanks for sharing that with us. I’m sure UK wrestling fans will be looking forward to seeing how High Impact Wrestling fares.

GJM – “Thanks.”

DD – “Thanks for your time Jimmy”

GJM - “Nay bother. Take care”

Landlord announces opening of new company!

Story and quotes by Dan Davies (3.15PM, Fri Week 4, December 2009)

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/TheLandlord.jpg

While many in the industry were surprised by the opening of HIW (High Impact Wrestling), revealed in my exclusive chat with Geordie Jimmy Morris on Tuesday, I can confirm that another new promotion is due to open in January 2010.

My sources had revealed to me that The Landlord, a well-respected veteran on the UK wrestling scene, was planning to open his own company. I called him at 2pm to gain some insight on these rumours…

Dan Davies – “Thanks for your time…Mr Landlord?”

The Landlord – “Call me Frank mate”

DD – Thanks Frank. I’m ringing regarding the rumours that you are looking to set up your own wrestling company…”

TL – “(angry) Who told you? Was it Steve? I’ll batter that plonker!”

DD – “Er, no…it was your wife actually, she gave me this number-“

TL – “Marlene! That’s it, I’m going to cancel her credit cards, silly cow!”

DD – “Erm, is this true?”

TL – “About the credit cards, yeah! I get one more call from these companies regarding outstanding interest-“

DD – “I meant the wrestling company-“

TL – “Yeah that’s true. Look, no offence Dave-“

DD – “It’s Dan”

TL – “Yeah, Dave, I got to split. One of my tenants says his leccy has gone off again, I gotta get there by 3 or he’ll ring the Tenants Union!”

DD – “Right. Well if-”

TL – “Look, I gotta dash mate. If you wanna chat wrestling, ring my booker Col on 0161 233 4541, he’s the geezer in the know. Laters”

DD – “Thanks-“

(line hung up)

I needed to know more (for the story, and for your information!), so I decided to ring ‘Col’ at 2.45pm

‘Col’ – “Good afternoon, Welling Pensions, Colin speaking, how can I help?”

Dan Davies – “Hi Colin, I er…got given this number by a wrestler… called The Landlord-“

Colin – “Damn it, I told him I could only do company work on my lunch!”

DD – “Is this a bad time? Can I print this?” I’m Dan Davies writing for Pro Wrestling News-“

Colin – “….Sure, I’ve read your work. Can I ring you back after work? I think I know what you want to ask me”

DD - “Sure….”

So I gave him my number and will wait for him to call me back. Once I hear anything I will update this story.

Story update – Exclusive interview with Colin Thorpe, booker of Union Jack Wrestling

Exclusive by Dan Davies (20.15pm, Friday Week 4, December 2009)

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/ColinThorpe.jpghttp://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/UJW.jpg

If you saw my earlier story, you will have seen that I rang Colin Thorpe to ask him about the rumour that The Landlord was setting up a new British wrestling company. While Colin was busy that afternoon, he rang me back that evening as promised to discuss…

Colin Thorpe – “Hello Dan?”

Dan Davies – “Ah Colin, thanks for ringing back. Before we go any further, can I publish this conversation?"

CT – “That’s fine, I had seen the story you had done earlier today-“

DD – “Sorry if I jumped the gun-“

CT – “No not at all. I’ve seen the work you’ve done on UK Dragon’s Japanese tour diaries so I knew you’ll do me justice”

DD – “Thanks. So many questions Colin, I’ll start at the beginning. Is The Landlord opening a new wrestling company?

CT – “Yes. Union Jack Wrestling opens in January 2010.”

DD – “Ok, finally, a name! How did you get involved in all this?”

CT – “My involvement? I administer The Landlord’s invested pension. Everybody at Welling is terrified of him but I managed to complete a property purchase for him quickly and he offered me the booking job a week later.”

DD – “Did he know if you were a fan? Do you have any experience?”

CT – “I told him I was a fan a few weeks ago. I had missed his call because I overslept after watching SWF’s Christmas Clash. After he had calmed down, he told me about UJW and asked me if I fancied it. Once in a lifetime opportunity for me, said yes straight away. I’ve no experience but The Landlord tells me I’m the most organised person he’s ever met and that’s what got me the job.

DD – What is the aim of the company in terms of ideology? Has The Landlord given you any indication on what talent UJW should use?

CT – The Landlord set me some goals – he wants young, tough wrestlers with good stamina. He has also threatened me with a good kicking if we fall below our current level of popularity.

DD – “Yikes! Where is this company based? Just because The Landlord is from London, while you have a Manchester accent and phone number?

CT – “UJW is based in the North of England as Landlord has some property contacts up here. Our HQ is Emerald Way, Glenn Street, Salford”

DD – “I did some digging after our earlier call. Isn’t that the office where you work?”

CT – (laughs) Yes – The Landlord wanted me to run it from my desk, as he claims not to have a computer. Which is a lie as he has e-mailed me several times (laughs). I explained the problem to my manager who said it would be fine providing I only do it on my lunch on my own laptop. The address is for postal and tax reasons."

DD – “Wow – so you book a wrestling company on your lunch?”

CT – “Book, draw up talent contracts, arrange meetings, ask Steve in Merc to design our logos-“

DD – “I’ve heard The Landlord mention Steve.

CT – “Yeah that’s his twelve year old son”

DD – “Ah…so it’s a small operation then?”

CT – “You could say that…(mumbling off line) Dan I have to see to the baby, so any more questions?”

DD – “No Colin, thanks for all your help”

CT – “No worries, speak to you later”

So it seems the British wrestling scene is getting bigger. With 21CW on top and ROF and MOSC fighting for scraps, is there any room for HIW and UJW? My column ‘The Battle of Britain’ (monthly every Sunday Week 4) will keep you updated on their progress.

OCC - Long time lurker, first time dynasty writer so any constructive criticism/comments welcome. Thanks to MJ Stark for letting me use his renders and again, thanks to Boltinho for the G.I.M.P. 2 tutorial

We Are UJW!

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/UJW.jpg

Tired of dull technicians who care more about arm wringers than action?

Tired of glorified soap operas?

Tired of nepotism in the main events?

Then welcome to Union Jack Wrestling – the new wrestling alternative!

Roster

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/ChristopherLister.jpg

Christopher Lister – Some wrestle for glory. Some wrestle for pride. Lister wrestles to save money to travel to science fiction conventions *COUGHnerdCOUGH*.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/RedDragon_alt.jpg

“The Welsh Warrior” Ian Davies – The talented Welsh flyer, formerly known as Red Dragon, has returned to UK wrestling, looking to prove himself again.

Puffy The Sand Iron Player – Dumped off the European Golf Tour for his inability to…well, play golf, Puffy has come to UJW to raise money to pay for another summer travelling Europe failing at golf. Managed by Mark Moore.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/NigelSvensson.jpg

Nigel Svensson – Don’t be fooled by the smile, Svensson can snap a man’s arm by just looking at it.

Mr Evilness – If white and black face paint doesn’t convince you he’s evil, nothing will.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/GenocideAgent.jpg

Genocide Agent – What he’s an agent of we’re unsure. Possibly not a secret agent with all that face paint.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/SuicideAgent.jpg

Suicide Agent – The more sensitive of the Agents, Sue (to his friends) likes poetry and long walks in the park.

Greg Keith – Someone needs to tell the arrogant #!*$ that his dad is a legend, not him.

Managers

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/MarkMoore.jpg

Mark Moore – Founder and owner of Moore Sports, his main role seems to be trying to keep Puffy’s golf career afloat. Moore will do this by any means, as the alternative is Puffy moving in with him over the summer.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/BethanyHurst_alt2.jpg

Bethany Hurst –A lovely, friendly girl whose day job is as a childminder. She manages Nigel Svensson.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/RandyGarcia.jpg

Randy Garcia - The Landlord’s ‘property manager’, Garcia is a lawyer of dubious merit. His idea of resting his case is to smash his brief case into another man’s head while he’s down.

Wow that's a great render - might phase that in eventually, if it's for general use?

I'm terrible with G.I.M.P. 2 (I couldn't make your logo)but it was a great help for simple logos and banners.

UJW UK Title 15 Man Battle Royal!

I'm gonna go with Beast Bantom winning this- with UJW's whole 'no nepotism' thing you can't really put the belt on The Landlord, and Bantom's a really solid worker

The Genocide Agents vs Mr Evilness and Puffy The Sand Iron Player

They're a proper team, Evilness and Puffy aren't

“The Welsh Warrior” Ian Davies vs Greg Keith

Oddly enough Greg doesn't get snapped up as quickly as Matt, I think because he works outside of the US

UJW UK Title 15 Man Battle Royal!

Similar to 1PWfan I'm expecting either Bantom or The Landlord to win this. Given the size of the company I'd go with the boss. Landlord

The Genocide Agents vs Mr Evilness and Puffy The Sand Iron Player

Evilness and Puffy is a fun team but the Italian has no overness and is a bit of a lump. Clear win for perhaps the greatest tag team in the cverse

“The Welsh Warrior” Ian Davies vs Greg Keith

Ian is a funny worker. He's absolutely brilliant at being a midcard teacher at a bigger promotion but can he really get over well enough to be a big name in a smaller one? I'd love to find out. Either way theres no point in letting Greg win.

UJW First Impressions Live report by Dan Davies (Sat Week 4 January 00.30AM)

Just got back from UJW’s debut show ‘First Impressions at Phoenix Nights. A cold dark night? Check. Warm beer? Check. 52 other wrestling fans freezing to death? Check. Without further ado…

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/BaliDaljit.jpg V http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/BeastBantom.jpg

Dark Match – Bali Daljit vs Beast Bantom

There is a height difference of 1ft in Bantom’s favour. Guess who I’m picking to win? Bantom opens with huge right hands and then nearly decapitates Bali with a clothesline. Bali gets a brief offensive flurry with a wild haymaker and a dropkick, but Bantom recovers and hits an evil looking choke slam, followed by the Savage Pounce (Diving shoulder check from the ropes) for the easy win.

Winner – Beast Bantom @ 3.50 (Savage Pounce)

Verdict? – Bad squash match. No flow. Moving on… Grade E-

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/ChristopherLister.jpghttp://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/NigelSvensson.jpghttp://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/MartinHeath.jpg

Dark Match – Christopher Lister, Nigel Svensson and Martin Heath vs Hugh De Aske, ‘Judo’ Glen Ward and Trance

Lots of bodies in the ring for this match. Loads of timing issues too, especially with Heath and Trance. I liked the finishing sequence though; it ends with Hugh De Aske hitting what everyone but De Aske calls the Cut Throat Driver (Bodyslam Driver) on Heath to get the win after Lister, Ward and Heath miss their finishers.

Winner – De Aske, Ward and Trance @ 11.02 (De Aske pinned Heath with the Cut Throat Driver)

Verdict? – I’ve seen worse I guess. Again there was no flow, just lots of sloppy moves. Last two minutes were good though with lots of counters before De Aske took the win. Grade D-

Main Show

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/GenocideAgent.jpghttp://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/TheLandlord.jpg

Genocide Agent walks out through the curtain on the stage. As he does that, The Landlord sneaks up behind him and hits Genocide Agent with a double axe handle from behind, then hurls him back through the curtain. A series of mounted punches later, and Genocide Agent is flat out under the curtain.

Verdict? So this was confirmation of the heel turn? Landlord is always a heel to me (ever met a likeable landlord?) so it seemed a bit pointless. Grade E-

After Genocide Agent is helped to the back, Greg Keith comes out with a mic.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/GregGauge.jpg

“I am a legend in the making yet I’m reduced to appearing in this sweat box watched by an audience of tools? Why not award me the title now and save ourselves the hassle of watching these part time bums flail against each other?”

My opponent tonight is ‘The Welsh Warrior?’ Was ‘The Scottish Soldier’ busy? I am a Keith…my destiny is to be great. So Welsh Wimp, come out here and let me get this over with!

Verdict? – Keith is good on the mic, but no-one really knows him here (apart from the GCG diehard three rows in front who cheered every word!) Give him time to get over and he will get great heat in the future. Grade E

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/RedDragon_alt.jpgVhttp://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/GregGauge.jpg

‘The Welsh Warrior’ Ian Davies vs Greg Keith

Both men tie up to start. Keith hits a fireman’s carry, which gets a roar from both the GCG diehard and Greg Keith. Both men up to their feet and Davies throws a chop at Keith, then applies a side headlock. Keith pushes him off to the ropes, takes a shoulder check and rolls out of the ring. Stall spot as Keith slowly makes his way back in to the ring. Collar and elbow tie up again, this time Davies goes for the arm. Arm wringer followed by a grounded hammerlock, Keith manages to get on his feet however and mule kicks Davies below the belt.

Once Ref Bailey has finished admonishing him, Keith helps up Davies with the aim of inflicting some punishment. Near falls from a backbreaker and a russian legsweep follow. Really slow match here. Davies evades a corner knee and hits a dropkick, then follows with a knee drop off the ropes for 2. Cross body also gets 2, as does a hip toss.

This leads to the finishing sequence; Keith avoids a corner splash and grabs Davies’ legs, looking for the Proton Lock (Scorpion Deathlock with neck bridge). Nevertheless Davies is able to kick Keith headfirst into the turnbuckle, knocking Keith out. Davies then hits the moonsault for 3.

Winner – “The Welsh Warrior” Ian Davies @ 11.30 (Moonsault)

Verdict? – A disappointment. The match dragged. Maybe Davies needs more match practice. Grade E+

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/BeastBantom.jpg

As Davies is celebrating, Beast Bantom races into the ring and drills him with a Savage Pounce. Two choke slams follow in rapid order, leaving Davies on his back in a heap.

Verdict? - Typical monster segment. Grade E+

Randy Garcia and The Landlord are out next to talk about the attack on Genocide Agent.

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/RandyGarcia.jpghttp://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/TheLandlord.jpg

“Well, as my client The Landlord informed me, Mr Agent did not pay his rent last month. After requesting direct cash payment in 14 days, as stated in the lease, we did not receive payment. Therefore tonight we issued a… ‘reminder’ if you will. It’s simple really. If you can afford silly facepaint, you can afford rent.”

Verdict? – Garcia is a decent talker and I guess we’ve got a storyline to go with the earlier attack. Not sure on this whole ‘Landlord’ gimmick though, Grade E+

We see Puffy backstage on the projector screen (no big screens at Phoenix Nights!). A note is on his bag. Puffy reads it, curls his hands into balls and groans to no one in particular.

Verdict? - Pointless. 1 – Backstage segments at Phoenix Nights aren’t easy to see, especially if the school across the road realise their projector is gone. 2 – This segment furthered nothing ,as this is the first show. i.e. if Jack Bruce had found a note – we would assume Rich Money or Eric Eisen had something to do with it as we know the history of that feud. I don’t think the Union of Mediocre Workers sends notes… Grade F+

The Genocide Agents vs Mr Evilness and Puffy The Sand Iron Player

Genocide and Evilness start this one off with a test of strength. Genocide wins and hits as many stiff punches as he can before Mr Evilness rakes his eyes and tags Puffy. A poor punch based heat segment ends when Suicide gets the hot tag and punches both Evilness and Puffy before hitting some sloppy hip tosses on the heels. Back to the punches for The Agents before Evilness is clotheslined to the floor by Suicide and Genocide is able to hit a hanging powerslam on Puffy for the victory.

Winner The Agents @ 10.12 (Genocide Agent pinned Puffy after a hanging powerslam)

Verdict? – Awful wrestling by both teams. Sloppy basic offense with no psychology. Crowd were really into this though. Grade E+

Match hype for The Landlord vs Genocidal Agent at the next show, UJW Jack of Hearts (Grade E-)

http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t495/Occasional_Z/MrEvilness.jpg

Mr Evilness taunted Christopher Lister in the ring before the Battle Royal, noting that he would win because “he…is…evvvilllll!”

Verdict? Yup, get the guy who doesn’t speak English on promos. Grade E

15 men in the ring so my apologies if I miss anything! Trance makes life easier for me by throwing himself over the top straight away in a misguided attempt to clothesline Suicide Agent. Martin Heath follows, courtesy of Beast Bantom. Mr Evilness looks lost in this match, randomly just attacking people. The Gods of good wrestling smile down on me as Christopher Lister and Ian Davies double back drop the hapless Italian out in short order. Beast Bantom choke slams Christopher Lister and Greg Keith over the top rope before hitting a huge big boot on Puffy, decking the golfer.

In the meantime, The Landlord clotheslines Nigel Svensson to the floor. Glen Ward taunts Svensson only for Landlord to dump him as well! Genocide Agent chases The Landlord to the ropes, where Puffy cheap shots him in the ribs. Landlord quickly dumps Genocide Agent and then sidesteps a charging Suicide Agent, who crashes onto his partner on the outside. On the other side of the ring, Hugh De Aske and Ian Davies face off on the ring apron, a sequence that ends in Davies knocking the denial ridden pirate to the floor with an elbow.

The Landlord, Ian Davies, Beast Bantom and Puffy comprise the last four. Puffy looks over to Mark Moore for advice, allowing Ian Davies to sneakily lift him over the top rope to the floor, Bantom and The Landord then double team Davies for a few minutes, only for Bantom to miss a Savage Pounce and fly over the top rope to the apron. He grabs Davies and starts to drag him over the top rope! Landlord seizes the opening, lifting Davies over the ropes on to Bantom and pushing both men to the floor!

Winner and new UJW UK Champion The Landlord @ 15.03 (eliminating Ian Davies last)

Verdict? – An ok Battle Royale. I’m never the biggest fan of them, but in this case we crowned a champion and furthered some issues (Landlord – Genocide Agent, Davies – Bantom) so not a complete waste. Grade D-

Overall Verdict? – Not a great start. While the Battle Royal and dark match three man tag were bearable, the rest of the card left a lot to be desired. Too many debuts and not enough focus meant a lot got lost in translation. Still, it’s a first show – the only way up! Overall E+

#2 13.30pm Sunday Week 4 January 2010

Hello, and welcome to the second Battle of Britain report! Without any further ado, let’s see how the month panned out…

ROF Torn – Tues Week 1 January 2010 Norman Blue Athletic Center (Midlands)

A good start to the year for ROF, with two stand out matches in UK Dragon’s victory over Don Henderson (C-) and a successful Merle O’Curle ROF Title defence against Walter Morgan (C+). Rest of the card was acceptable. Att 111 Overall Grade C

MOSC Clash of The Tartans Weds Week 2 2010 Phoenix Nights (North)

Same old for MOSC – uneventful card saved by a good main event. In this case it was Man of the Night Harley Neil’s spirited MOSC UK Championship defence against Thug (C-). Rest of the card ranged from OK (Danny Patterson vs Bruiser, D+) to bad (Jeremy Allen and Ultra Violence’s no contest, E-) Att 163 Overall Grade D+

21CW Steel Cage Challenge Sat Week 3 January 2010 Middlesborough Hall (North)

Joss Thompson was the star of this show – his excellent confrontation with and title defence against Jonathan Faust (B- to each segment) were the highlights of a good show. Pit Bull Brown v Adam Matravers and Buff Martinez v Edward Cornell were good matches (both C) while Kevin Jones v Nightmare and Harry Wilson v Leo Price were both better than expected (both C-). Overall, a very good start to the year for 21CW! Att 2,000 PPV 0.06 Overall Grade C+

HIW SlamMania – Was scheduled for Tues Week 4 January 2010

Though scheduled this never went ahead due to time constraints. Grade N/A

UJW First Impressions Fri Week 4 January 2010 Phoenix Nights (North)

The debut show was a good try, but not much better than the usual British Independent Show effort in terms of quality. A watchable Battle Royale (D-) crowned The Landlord as UJW UK Champion. Ian Davies vs rising US star Greg Keith was disappointing (E+); many had expected more. Still, there is some promise here. Att 53 Overall Grade E+

British Independent Show – None scheduled this month

Yeah, I wasn’t too upset either… Grade N/A

Best show – 21CW Steel Cage Challenge Sat Week 3 January 2010 = C+

Best Match – Joss Thompson vs Jonathan Faust (21CW) = B-

So January is in the books and what have we learned? While 21CW is certainly leading in match and show quality, ROF are certainly providing high quality wrestling shows. I’ll make a bold prediction now – ROF will surpass 21CW at some point this year. At least for a month anyway!

Until next month,

Dan Davies.

Prizes schmises. After 3 shows chance to pick a hire?

Good opening show. Liked the commentary format and the match writeups were surprisingly readable for their length. Good stuff

Thanks for the kind words. That's a good idea too - whoever has the most correct predictions after 3 shows can suggest a hire.

Genny isnt taking this straight away. He'd be evicted.

Hugh will do one at some point. Noones going to sign Suicide away

Could go either way really but I reckon a DQ win for the Welshman

This will make the angry man angry

Puffy The Sand Iron Player vs Nigel Svensson

UJW UK Title Match The Landlord v Genocide Agent

The Landlord is going to have a decent reign. Winning with aid of interference

Hugh De Aske vs Suicide Agent

Mr "I'm not a pirate" getting ready for a title show

Beast Bantom v "The Welsh Warrior" Ian Davies

Training match for the Beast. Experience tells

Christopher Lister v Glen Ward

Draw/Double DQ as both lose it out of the ring

Puffy The Sand Iron Player vs Nigel Svensson

Svensson much better worker in imo but paying his dues here making Puffy look better
