CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT NIGHT

Saturday, week 3, July 2001

Johnny G’s Fun Center, Warner Robins, Georgia.

Bobby Roode v Claudio Castagnoli

A solid match and a decent opening match, but unfortunately the small crowd were a bit dead. The contest was high on technical action between two powerful wrestlers pound for pound. Castagnoli emerged with the win, defeating Bobby Roode in 7:51 by submission. D-

CM Punk v Doug Williams

Along similar lines to the first contest, high on quality wrestling action though to a quiet crowd again. Punk got the better of the British grappler in 10:32 by submission with an Arm Triangle Choke. D

Austin Aries v ‘Cowboy’ James Storm

A disappointing match, devoid of any excitement and it also lacked in quality even though both wrestlers have stacks of potential and a decent amount of ability despite their lack of experience. Aries picked up the win in 12:44 by pinfall with a 8-Second Ride. E

Amazing Red v Caprice Coleman

A lack of flow in this bout let to a lack of drama in the match, but the action was better and more exciting than the Aries versus Storm contest that preceded it. Coleman beat Red in 14:35 by pinfall and is now at the front of the line to receive the title match next month. E+

PSW SOUTH EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FINAL

AJ Styles v Drew McIntyre

Main event, the tournament final, the crowning of the first ever PSW South Eastern Champion and match of the night by a distance. McIntyre has been hugely impressive in the tournament, shocking Samoa Joe and Nigel McGuinness in the previous rounds. He also made AJ sweat in this one, coming close to becoming the first champion. AJ is going places in this business, and eventually got the better of McIntyre in 18:35 by pinfall with a Styles Clash. AJ Styles wins the South Eastern title. C-

Show rating: D+

PREDICTION COMPETITION

It seems that the sport element of this diary is making for lower prediction scores than in my old TEW10 TNA diary...

1. Michigan Hero 3

1. BHK 3

3. Olympia 2

3. Kijar 2

3. The Final Countdown 2

3. 20LEgend 2

Well done to Michigan Hero and BHK for the win. As I didn't post the tiebreaker until after you both posted, then I'll let you both name a show. As Michigan Hero posted first, you can name the fourth show (the next one) and BHK can name the fifth one. You also both get to choose a person in my game world to be profiled on here (see my TEW10 TNA diary for the style of the profile). The current game date is July 2001.

Potter Sport Wrestling owner Potter starts off the company’s fourth show, Choice of a New Generation in the ring. He asks the PSW South Eastern Champion, AJ Styles to come to the ring. Styles comes to the ring to applause from the nineteen strong crowd. Potter presents the PSW South Eastern Championship belt to AJ Styles, who tells Potter and the fans that he is proud to be the company’s first champion. D

Bobby Roode v Samoa Joe

A good opening match up between the two remaining unranked wrestlers in PSW. Both men have a good mix of a power and submission arsenal and it was Joe and his submission skills that prevailed in 9:14 by submission with a Dragon Sleeper. D

Claudio Castagnoli v Doug Williams

A match less focused on power but heavy on the technical side, it was another good bout with some solid action. In a battle of Europe, the usually battle shy Swiss came on top, as Castagnoli chalked up the w in 11:29 by pinfall. D

Amazing Red v CM Punk

Another match of good quality that belies the small size of PSW. Despite being off his game on the night, Red used his speed and high flying ability to get the better of Punk in 13:47 by submission. D

’Cowboy’ James Storm v Drew McIntyre

A very poor match which saw the fighting Cowboy put the brash young Scot in his place. McIntyre was a worthy finalist in the Championship tournament, but perhaps his progress in that tournament made him too big for his boots. Cowboy made McIntyre pay for his excessive showboating in the match, sealing the deal in 15:16 by pinfall with a 8-Second Ride. E+

PSW SOUTH EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIP

AJ Styles (champion) v Caprice Coleman

PSW best show in their fledgling history, a match high in quality action and also in front of a hot if small crowd, which both wrestlers were able to feed off. The two in question are two of wrestling’s hottest prospects and it was the undefeated champion who was able to retain, overcoming a difficult challenge from Coleman in 23:51 by pinfall with a Styles Clash. AJ Styles makes defence number 1 of his PSW South Eastern title. C
