Prediction Key:

First Blood

Fyte vs. Henry Lee

Never been impressed with Henry Lee. Fyte might as well keep the advantage.

DaVE Tag Team Championship

Team Strength Rush © vs. The Darkness Warriors

Come on, man, they're ad hoc challengers. They're wearing robes. Freaking ROBES.

Eric Tyler vs. Thomas Morgan

Tyler has more lessons to teach than a Morgan could ever learn.

Tables

Death Metal (Death & Metal) w/ Professor Nero vs. Dynamite Duo (Chris Caulfield & Michael Cook)

I know Caufield! Caulfield is not losing! Especially not to a couple of German loons with no American overness yet.

Dan DaLay vs. Freddie Datsun w/ Miss Bliss

Going to be at least one bullshit win for a heel tonight, and I call this one.

Roy Stephens vs. ????

I recall Roy Stephens... kind of sucking.

I Quit

Monty Walker vs. The Wolverine

I am a Monty Walker mark. HUGE fan of the guy. I hope he knocks the sideburns off Dil.

DaVE Extreme Championship - Last Man Standing

Johnny Martin © vs. JD Morgan w/ Phil Vibert

Nobody described as an "enforcer" ever really wins the title.

Prediction Key:

First Blood

Fyte vs. Henry Lee

This goes against every instinct I have, since Lee always used to get poached in the opening week when I played 97 games in previous versions...

DaVE Tag Team Championship

Team Strength Rush © vs. The Darkness Warriors

I mark for Diaz.

Eric Tyler vs. Thomas Morgan

One of these men is not like the other one.

Tables

Death Metal (Death & Metal) w/ Professor Nero vs. Dynamite Duo (Chris Caulfield & Michael Cook)

Caulfield's at his best taking a loss. Cook is a long-term prospect at best

Dan DaLay vs. Freddie Datsun w/ Miss Bliss

My flatmate is a huge Freddie Datsun mark for reasons I haven't quite worked out. It seems to be infecting my thinking...

Roy Stephens vs. ????

Stephens great strength is taking a pinfall

I Quit

Monty Walker vs. The Wolverine

Total coin flip

DaVE Extreme Championship - Last Man Standing

Johnny Martin © vs. JD Morgan w/ Phil Vibert

Another coin flip.

Henry Lee heads down to the ring first, a light of stubborn insanity burning in the young man's eye, ready for his match. “First Blood – and blood is in the air!” Mitch Naess exclaims... and he has no idea how right he is.

Lee doesn't make it to the ring. A tyre iron collides with the back of his head, and Derek Barnes comes over the guardrail to continue the assault. He tosses the tyre iron aside and produces, from his leather jacket, a switchblade.

The crowd really wake up as that blade catches the light. With a fluid motion, Barnes grabs Lee by the hair, pulling his head up, then makes a long, shallow cut across his forehead.

“First blood, my ass,” he can be heard yelling, before turning to face Vibert at the announce table. He has no mic, but the audience are eager to hear what he has to say. “You know what you owe. You lose a match a month until you pay up.”

Barnes leaves before anyone's willing to approach him, spinning his knife around his fingers.

Vibert stands up after that and sighs. “Well, that didn't make this any easier.

“Lee Wright, one of our tag champions, got himself injured in Japan yesterday. Now, for missing the match, I've got the right to strip Team Strength Rush of their titles... but I don't want to do that.

“Raymond Diaz is here to compete. He's going to take on Jay Darkness... and the winner gets to add any rule they want to the tag titles match, when it happens. And it will happen, because here in DaVE, titles are earned by taking them off the last guy to win them.”

A brutal, brutal contest. Diaz has power. Jay is a wily individual – something that's never more apparent than now, when handing off to his brother isn't an option – and he uses that to its best advantage, but in the end Diaz muscles through his chokehold and powers into the Ray Gun, picking up a quick pin to earn something for the title match. The champs' hold looks stronger...

A startling match-up. Tyler and Morgan don't quite wrestle a completely clean match, but seeing a completely clean match anywhere is rare these days. Morgan nearly gets the win a couple of times, but Eric is able to counter through each time, ultimately pinning his opponent after bouncing his jaw off the ringpost and, back in the ring, grabbing a handful of tights.

Eric Tyler defeated Thomas Morgan

Professor Nero hits the ring, his newest lackeys in tow.

“They grow up so fast,” he sighs. “They become... respectable... so fast.

“I've never lost the hunger I had when I started. The violence I was capable of in the beginning, I am still capable of. I'm still hungry for power. For victory. For everything. Hungry enough to do what it takes... everything it takes.

“My old proteges lost that hunger as they earned respect. And one day, that will happen, too, with these new ones. As they earn your respect. Your... horrified... admiration... for what they're willing to do.

“But until then... hunger will take us both far.”

Everybody throws a lot of punches. Everybody throws a lot of suplexes. An assisted powerbomb from Death Metal puts Michael Cook through a table – and despite Cook nominally being a face, that triggers the biggest pop of the match, even as Caulfield bulldogs Metal through the next table to bring it down to one on one action against Death. Death dominates for a while with hard punches and stiff slams, but Caulfield blocks a spinebuster and rallies to biel Death into a table propped in the corner.

Memory's Garden by Trouble begins to play, and Freddie Datsun and Miss Bliss, as ever, march out to the tune.

Freddie is focused on the contest; Miss Bliss is focused on Freddie.

And then Freddie meets Eddie, as Eddie Chandler crashes into him from behind with a textbook shoulderblock. He moves straight into ground and pound mode, and Miss Bliss looks to drag him off – only for Easy Emma to spear her, the two of them getting into a catfight before Chandler abruptly retreats, leaving Datsun still moving but woozy.

“...Huh,” Phil Vibert says on commentary. “What's Eddie Chandler have to do with Dan DaLay?”

DaLay towers over the injured Datsun, which seems to split the crowd; some of the fans want to see the giant punish a man already attacked and worn down, some respect Datsun's ability to take punishment and come through.

In both cases, they want Freddie Datsun to take a beating. And boy, does he ever. But he rallies, and even as DaLay dominates, Datsun finds a way, moving into a bearhug and lifting, laying his opponent down and out with the Patriot Press.

Freddie Datsun defeated Dan DaLay

Miss Bliss screams. Eric Tyler is advancing on her, and Freddie reacts as fast as you could ask the battered, injured man to do; he scrambles out of the ring, cutting Tyler off.

And then someone in a baseball cap, seated in the front row, throws his beer in Freddie's face. Tyler takes Datsun down as the man in the cap hops the rails, clamping down hard with a very recognisable submission hold.

Tyler removes the baseball cap from his newest student, mic in hand.

“You want to watch what's coming, Freddie. What's about to happen to Roy Stephens will happen to you. You have no respect for tradition. You have no respect for training and education.

“But the School of Tradition is still the most dangerous force in DaVE.” He glances up at Miss Bliss, unable to interrupt the hold her beau is locked in due to Tyler's presence, and grins.

“ROY STEPHENS!” he calls. “You have the chance to save your hero now.

“Not often THAT happens...

“Tommy Cornell, the “Wigan Wonder” as the chinless wonders in New York call him, the man who's just Too Good For TV, is going to break Freddie's arm...

“...or wrestle you.

“Your choice, Roy. Do you have the balls to come out here and-”

Tubthumpin' begins to play, and Roy Stephens hurries to the ring.

“Watch this, Freddie,” Eric grins. “Class is in session!”

Like his hero, Roy is a hard man to put down, but he's also a man who is, here, totally outclassed. In the eight minutes this 'contest' runs, his offence totals three punches, a kick that misses, a lariat turned into an armbar by Cornell, and an attempted suplex that turns into the Rough Ride when Cornell sneeringly counters.

Tommy, meanwhile, is all smiles throughout, refusing to pin off the Rough Ride, breaking submissions frequently just before the ref could check on Stephens, and ultimately finishing him with a Guilt Trip when all the amusement has run dry.

Monty Walker hits the ring as the entire crowd sing along to Walk This Way. Walker himself couldn't look more cheerful... or more smug.

And then the music ends – and the same thing that happened in November, December, and January when Walker's song cuts out happens again.

“YOU-SOLD-OUT! YOU-SOLD-OUT!”

Walker collects a microphone and lets the chant build, watching the fans. He's grinning; looking closely at the footage, it's clear that so are they; not exactly what you expect from this kind of chant, but it's there.

“YOU-SOLD-OUT! YOU-SOLD-OUT!”

“Got it out your system?” Walker enquires lightly. The crowd cheer, laughingly, and give him one last burst before subsiding.

“Funny, though... I'm still here, ain't I?” he asks them, looking around. “Sure, you'll maybe see me tomorrow night on the tube. You maybe saw me pick up a title last month, maybe saw me defend it this month.

“But that's not important. That's the land of makebelieve and sparkles straight out of a sixteen year old's bank balance, and this is Danger... and VIOLENCE...”

“EXTREME!” the crowd bellow. Walker grins; he has them playing a game with him, as he did in December when he still showed up, as he did in January when he still showed up, and even the smarkiest smark will mark out when they're in the game too.

“That's right. I got myself the money... but I come here when the Walk needs the rush!

“And that is why, tonight, I... will... not... quit. That is why, tonight, I will once again prove that DaVE is more than hardcore. DaVE is beyond the blood. DaVE is a home for great wrestlers who... do... not... quit.

“Wolverine, we've danced this dance a bunch of times. You couldn't finish me. The embarrassing thing is, I couldn't finish you.

“Well, I'm not the kind of guy to just accept that. Tonight we find a breaking point for one of us,m and I've got a sneaking suspicion it's going to be you.

“Let's not make it quick. I don't wanna embarrass you...

“Not too much.”

There's never quite the match here that the promo or the feud deserves, but nonetheless – there are some big moments here. The Wolverine powerbombs Walker over the top rope, then immediately drags him back in and threatens a second, hoping to trigger a quit, only for Monty to 'rana his way clear.

From there on, the match is almost never in the ring, and it ends when Walker takes the initiative. He traps the Wolverine's foot inside the wooden ring steps then goes to the turnbuckle above it, mic in hand. “If I jump,” he says, “I'll break the steps... and turn your ankle bones into dust.”

That gets a quiet “I quit” from the Wolverine, and the Walk once again demonstrates a new way to terrify.

Monty Walker defeated The Wolverine

“This is it,” Phil Vibert says, rising from the announce table, switching his microphone over to the house speakers. Guns of Brixton by The Clash begins to play as his client, JD Morgan, starts heading to the ring. “This is what you came for. What you paid to see. And this is a great man – JD Morgan, a champion wrestler, trained in the British style – and a thug.

“Last Man Standing, for the Extreme Championship. The most important belt there is. The mark of the greatest fighter today. And here comes the new champion – the champion you deserve.”

Morgan joins Vibert in the ring, and Johnny Martin emerges to the sound of the Smashing Pumpkins.

“He doesn't get my belt,” is all Johnny says.

Before this point, these two have seldom locked up more than once a year, and that seems to have been deliberate. People forget just how well they complement each other and are shocked every time. And this is a really good match, with Morgan looking to destroy Martin's legs, Martin looking to knock his opponent out.

Both men have a path to their goal planned out and it shows, but it will always, ultimately, come down to who can put their plan into play most effectively.

While he can barely stand to do it, Johnny Martin takes that title when he powers up and connects with a second Twist on the Rocks, this one keeping Morgan off his feet for the crucial ten... barely.

Thomas Morgan settles back in a chair by the side of what is recognisable from documentary DVDs as the SWF HQ gym. He takes a thoughtful pull at a sports drink, then nods. “Right,” he says. “So, Tommy Cornell coming to DaVE...</p><p> </p><p>

“I hadn't been with DaVE too long myself then, bear in mind. Phil Vibert had taken a chance on me, I guess someone had passed around a tape or something and because he was pushing Eric and Jeff, he wanted someone who could go hold for hold with them and take a lot of losses.</p><p> </p><p>

“He gave me a series against Eric first, which got sort of truncated and then sort of mutated when Tommy came in. And it was a lot like...</p><p> </p><p>

“Our tapes are harder to find, because DaVE's distribution network before about 1999 was the s***s, but it was basically the same as when Art Reed and Acid had their series, only we didn't catch Japanese eyes. </p><p> </p><p>

“We worked DaVE doing that, and we worked a bunch of indy shows all over North America doing it when word got around, and we worked it again in CGC in, what, 2000? I think it was then. You're on YouTube, the Internet will know, look it up.</p><p> </p><p>

“But it got people talking about me, and I do kind of wonder – I heard a rumour that before Tommy became available, Phil had been planning to go real hardcore. And if he'd done that, then we're looking at my career going into the toilet, trying to find some work somewhere...</p><p> </p><p>

“Tommy and Eric and JD and Eddie was enough to convince Phil he could open things up a bit. DaVE was still pretty hardcore, but the other side of it – the side people didn't talk about much back then – got more attention when Tommy came in, and that meant my demo tape got good and fat with some great matches and I got to learn promos from Eric f**king Tyler.</p><p> </p><p>

“I mean, without them I reckon I'd still be working indies. As it was, I coasted on that series until the real big leagues came calling, and with the SWF not believing in exclusivity at the time, I remain the only guy to simultaneously hold the CGC and SWF world titles. And sure, I held them both together for, like, twenty-three hours. And the SWF reign didn't last much longer than that total.</p><p> </p><p>

“But still... man, Tommy Cornell coming to DaVE is what really made me a Trademark, you know?” He grins. “No criticism given to Mr Eisen – or Gorgeous George, for that matter. But that was what built me up.”</p>

After the HollyWeird Girls strut their stuff, this Tuesday is going to be dynamite. The legendary <strong>Demons of Rage</strong> take on an equally legendary tag team making their HollyWeird debut. <strong>The One Percenters</strong>, Mayhem Midden and the Night Rider, are going to hit hard and take no prisoners.</p><p> </p><p>

Further tag team action will take a decidedly faster turn, with <strong>Mucha Lucha</strong> going up against rookie Austronesian sensations <strong>Savage Fury</strong>.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jason Jackson</strong> gets his first break in two months from fighting the Untouchables - <strong>Troy Tornado</strong> is his big target here. Tornado has been highlighted by other wrestling companies recently. Can he survive in the biggest league of all?</p><p> </p><p>

In tag team action unlikely allies combine. Liberty isn't the only one to take offence to Rip Chord's recent remarks about Texas, and so <strong>Rip Chord and Peter Valentine </strong>tag up against <strong>Liberty and Cowboy Ricky Dale</strong>.</p><p> </p><p>

Lastly, <strong>Dread</strong> seeks to prove his dominance in battle with <strong>Dusty Streets</strong>. Will the shadow of fear triumph over the second generation sensation?</p><p> </p><p>

<p><strong>Demons of Rage (Demon Anger & Demon Spite)</strong> vs. The One Percenters (Mayhem Midden & the Night Rider)</p><p>

<em>This is mainly because of personal preference.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Mucha Lucha (Electrico & Mr Lucha)</strong> vs. Savage Fury (Java & Tribal Warrior)</p><p>

<em>Savage Fury have never been a great team so I go with more talented pair.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jason Jackson </strong>vs. Troy Tornado</p><p>

<em>Jackson was third in that battle royal on the first show and that has to count something, besides Tornado is just a rookie at this point.</em></p><p> </p><p>

The Tag Team Specialists (Joel Bryant & Robert Oxford) vs. <strong>????</strong></p><p>

<em>I go with mystery team on this one.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Genghis Rahn vs.<strong> Richie Pangrazzio Jr w/ Coach Dick Pangrazzio</strong></p><p>

<em>Pangrazzio Jr is having a feud with Homicide so I figure he get past Rahn who seems to be lower on the ladders compered to Homicide.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Cowboy Ricky Dale & Liberty</strong> vs. Peter Valentine & Rip Chord w/ Charlie Thatcher</p><p>

<em>This is a close one but I give this one to faces simply because I think that Chord has better change of winning the singles match between him and Liberty. </em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Dread</strong> vs. Dusty Streets</p><p>

<em>At least to me, Dread is the bigger name out from these two.</em></p>

<p><strong>Demons of Rage (Demon Anger & Demon Spite)</strong> vs. The One Percenters (Mayhem Midden & the Night Rider)</p><p> </p><p>

<em>The Demons of Rage are the Road Warriors/Legion of Doom of the Cornellverse, and HGC is a place where that kind of thing still matters. Even in 1997, Midden is too old to compete here... and while I don't have the '77 mod in hand right now, I recall the Night Rider being a similarly ancient guy. </em></p><p> </p><p>

Mucha Lucha (Electrico & Mr Lucha) vs. <strong>Savage Fury (Java & Tribal Warrior)</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>I could be wrong here, but I just see Mucha Lucha as jobbers. Savage Fury might be undistinguished hosses, but they're big powerful undistinguished hosses, and that'll get you a push in Sam Strong Country.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jason Jackson </strong>vs. Troy Tornado</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Tornado is, what, 17? It's incredible that he's even worked his way up to the big time... no need to pile winning on top of that.</em></p><p> </p><p>

The Tag Team Specialists (Joel Bryant & Robert Oxford) vs. <strong>????</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Question marks are designed at a test for the Powers of Hell. If they can't even beat the Specialists, what kind of test is that?</p><p> </p><p>

Genghis Rahn vs. <strong>Richie Pangrazzio Jr w/ Coach Dick Pangrazzio</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Same deal here... this is building to a Homicide-Richie Pangrazzio rematch. If he loses to Rahn, how do we get back there?</em></p><p><em>

</em></p><p>

Cowboy Ricky Dale & Liberty vs.<strong> Peter Valentine & Rip Chord</strong> w/ Charlie Thatcher</p><p> </p><p>

Just feel like the two young guys are not quite ready to take on Chord. Unless they intend to play Valentine as a buffoon who loses the match for his team, or Thatcher as an idiot who gets them DQed... both of which are possible. But I'm saying not yet.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Dread</strong> vs. Dusty Streets</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Even in 1997, Dusty Streets is too old to be viable. I love Dread, so I was probably voting for him anyway. But even if I wasn't, I would here.</em></p>

<p><strong>Demons of Rage (Demon Anger & Demon Spite)</strong> vs. The One Percenters (Mayhem Midden & the Night Rider)</p><p> </p><p>

<em>The number of teams who should be defeating the demons are few and far between. </em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Mucha Lucha (Electrico & Mr Lucha) </strong>vs. Savage Fury (Java & Tribal Warrior)</p><p> </p><p>

<em>I really love Savage Fury as a team, but they're still developing at this stage of the game. </em></p><p><em>

</em></p><p>

Jason Jackson vs. <strong>Troy Tornado</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Torando's got an upside, even at a young age, and no-one else seems to be backing him...</em></p><p> </p><p>

The Tag Team Specialists (Joel Bryant & Robert Oxford) vs. <strong>????</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>No idea who it's going to be, but if they're being brought in to face the challengers for the belts in the near future...</em></p><p> </p><p>

Genghis Rahn vs. <strong>Richie Pangrazzio Jr w/ Coach Dick Pangrazzio</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>'Grazzio has a storyline at present.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Cowboy Ricky Dale & Liberty vs. <strong>Peter Valentine & Rip Chord</strong> w/ Charlie Thatcher</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Chord is going to torture the hell out of Liberty before the face gets some payback, and they're the side with Charlie Thatcher in their corner.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Dread</strong> vs. Dusty Streets</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Dusty Streets = jobber to the stars</em></p>

<em>As commented, they're just too good. They're a team on top, they should be winning.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Mucha Lucha (Electrico & Mr Lucha) vs. <strong>Savage Fury (Java & Tribal Warrior)</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Mr Lucha is over, Electrico isn't. They're a way more talented team but... hm... yeah this is kind've a coinflip.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jason Jackson</strong> vs. Troy Tornado</p><p> </p><p>

<em>I still don't know who Jason Jackson is, but Troy isn't over enough to win here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

The Tag Team Specialists (Joel Bryant & Robert Oxford) vs. <strong>????</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>TTTS are good at looking good in defeat. They're young enough to push right now, but ??? is always a wild card.</em></p><p> </p><p>

The dance comes to an end and they strike poses, three on either side of the entryway, as Liberty heads down to the ring, his theme song <em>Carry On My Wayward Son</em> playing as he does so.</p><p> </p><p>

“So I'm a little confused here, man,” he begins. “Somehow me saying Rip Chord isn't the best wrestler there's ever been has turned into nothing good coming out of Texas and Rip going crazy at me.</p><p> </p><p>

“Rip, I stand by what I said. The best wrestler ever wouldn't've needed to cheat half so often as you have. Where you got what you seem to think I said from...” He shrugs.</p><p> </p><p>

“Whatever, man. I don't care. See, I'm a wrestler, and you're a wrestler. And to me, that means it's easy enough to settle this one.</p><p> </p><p>

“You and me, end of the month. Nice little pay-per-view match to see who's really best.</p><p> </p><p>

“That's what I'm gonna do to settle it, anyway. Tonight, me and Cowboy Dale Ricardo are gonna – what?” He peers blearily at one of the ring crew.</p><p> </p><p>

“Cowboy Ricky Dale, right,” he nods. “My bad, man. Anyway, tonight we're settling something else. You can't work out who's best in a tag match... but we can teach ya sump'n, and we're gonna, and what we're gonna teach ya is a lesson so many have learned.” His gaze finds the hard camera, and he pulls his shades down to look over them, serious all of a sudden.</p><p> </p><p>

Demons of Rage vs. One Percenters</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The Percenters show why they were SWF champs in the early going, but the Demons are still sprightly enough to have a speed advantage to go with their power advantage. While the bikers work the crowd – Midden still acting like a heel, but somehow, it works – the Demons bide their time, and when Midden piledrives Spite, he bounces straight back up, setting up the Double Demon Down stereo powerbomb to secure their victory.</p><p>

Mucha Lucha vs. Savage Fury</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

It's young big men against slightly more experienced little men, and the speed/power dynamic is in full effect. Mr Lucha shines against Java, and it seems as if the two luchadores have planned to have Electrico watch Tribal Warrior – although in the end of the match, having baited Java into a charge that sends him flying from the ring, it's Lucha who hits Tribal Warrior with the Master Drop, sending a man who, as Rhodes points out, is half again his weight crashing to the mat from over his shoulders.</p><p>

Mr Lucha is by the ring announcer's side as he finishes announcing the winners. He respectfully holds out his hand for the microphone, and the announcer looks at him for a moment, surprised, perhaps, that it wasn't snatched from him.</p><p> </p><p>

“Ladies and gentlemen, some silence, please, in respect for a Mexican legend,” the announcer says before passing the mic across.</p><p> </p><p>

“Thank you,” Lucha says. “Now, then... I've heard a lot of complaints as we move around the country. Complains about Romeo Heartthrob, and his being the first Cruiserweight champion.</p><p> </p><p>

“Questions about the dubious means he used to acquire the belt. Questions about whether he even meets the weight limits.</p><p> </p><p>

“But the other thing I'm hearing is from people who've seen my kind of wrestling. From fans who know lucha libre. And they're saying that it isn't right he holds the belt. That the Cruiserweight belt is a luchador belt, nothing else.</p><p> </p><p>

“Well, all a luchador is is a fighter, and we've fighters in Mexico the size of Heartthrob – oye, we've fighters in Mexico the size of Dread, and I've beaten them all. I'm here to fight others, people outside Mexico. People who might be fighters but they wouldn't call themselves luchadors.</p><p> </p><p>

“So I say alright, he has the belt right now. But it won't be his for long, I promise you that. Cheaters prosper. Anyone who says different is a liar.</p><p> </p><p>

“But that's why we have champions. Champions beat the cheaters back down. And while I don't have the belt around his waist yet – I'm going to take it from him. I'm a champion. That's what Mr Lucha stands for.”</p><p>

Jason Jackson vs. Troy Tornado</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Much to the surprise of Rhodes and Azaria – Rhodes being in the middle of an extended riff on the fact both combatants' names are alliterative, and arguably not paying a lot of attention – Paul Steadyfast joins the announce table for this one. </p><p> </p><p>

Tornado shows some great flair here, but something Azaria and Steadyfast both repeatedly point out is how weak his tactical and ring sense appears to be; he'll hit big moves, but he's also going for them even when they're unwise. Jason Jackson catches him on this, managing to counter a flying attack and take him down. He locks in a cloverleaf variant, kneeling and using his own shoulders for the necessary leverage, and secures the tapout.</p><p>

“The fact is,” Coach Dick Pangrazzio says, seated backstage, looking idly at the camera, “that my boys are old school. Bryan and Larry have tagged together all their professional lives. Same with Joey and Teddy. The Tag Team Specialists have paid their dues as a tag team in Japan.</p><p> </p><p>

“The Powers of Hell – can't say I'm a fan of people calling themselves that, either, doesn't seem right but I guess times change – say they fought the champions to a draw. They say they deserve a rematch because of that... but the fact is, my boys are old school.</p><p> </p><p>

“You earned a draw because we didn't know who was coming. We couldn't prepare, and with that advantage you made it to a draw.</p><p> </p><p>

“Now, the Vesseys are as fighting a pair of champions as you can imagine. They'll give you a shot soon enough – so long as you can get through some real tag teams. Some established boys. Just to make sure that a rematch is worth their time.</p><p> </p><p>

“So we called in some favours. A couple of boys who made their names in Japan – and who are gonna be adding to that with a name here.</p><p> </p><p>

“Tonight, you get to watch. Because we're old school, and we give scouting time.</p><p> </p><p>

Black Serpent Cult vs. Tag Team Specialists</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The Specialists channel their close teamwork to stay almost on a level with the Black Serpent Cult, staving off their best attacks, using their own understanding of Japanese contests to keep up to pace, and generally showing their potential for the future.</p><p> </p><p>

In the present, however, the Cult are that hair better, and Viper delivers his famed Snakebite Roundhouse Kick to lock down victory.</p><p>

The camera is in extreme close-up on a kaira spider, its web basket containing a moth that has been unlucky enough to be caught. The background is a vague fleshtone, but nothing more than that, until the camera refocuses, revealing Charlie Homicide to be watching the capture with a certain interest.</p><p> </p><p>

“Genghis Rahn is a fighter,” he says thoughtfully, eyes still on the spider. “A man who spills blood. A true man, yes...” He snorts. “Well... one day he shall be a true man.</p><p> </p><p>

“Like so many other merchants of blood and guts today, Genghis Rahn is a copycat. And I, the original. Whenever a man leaves bodies behind him, whenever he becomes famous for a new way of doing so, broken men find in that a way to make themselves whole. Broken men copy him, and in so doing, they become mended... and on the way to a purity of their own.</p><p> </p><p>

“Rahn hasn't yet reached purity, Junior. Rahn is a copycat, and his defeat is irrelevant. It means nothing, but it will call copycats to you, Junior. You will soon walk a bloody and confusing path, beset by men as broken as you – but ones who have found a path to their salvation, if they can walk it.</p><p> </p><p>

“You prove nothing... but then, you couldn't. Give these men their chance to become whole in your blood. And all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”</p><p> </p><p>

Genghis Rahn vs. Richie Pangrazzio Jr w/ Coach Dick Pangrazzio</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The match itself isn't hardcore, and that does restrict Rahn somewhat. Still, it doesn't quite look like he has the snap and verve necessary to defeat the former Star All-Star in any case, and Richie weathers the punishment before locking down the All-Star Stretch, forcing a victory.</p><p>

Backstage go the cameras and Peter Valentine and Rip Chord are hanging around the interview area, Charlie Thatcher leaning against the wall behind them, arms folded, a study in paying flat-out no attention.</p><p> </p><p>

“Ricky Dale,” Valentine begins, “you're never gonna make it. Not here in the big leagues. Texas doesn't make it big, right, Rip?”</p><p> </p><p>

Rip Chord snorts, looking away unimpressed. Valentine grins, showing no awareness that Chord isn't on-side with him. “The fact of the matter is, people can say all they want about how you're gonna be a big deal – but you aren't gonna be a big deal. It's that simple.”</p><p> </p><p>

Charlie Thatcher reaches up, nudging his sunglasses down to peer at Valentine over them, and shakes his head before settling them back into place.</p><p> </p><p>

“Cowboys are gone. Cowboys are passé, a forgotten shell of the past. But Valentines are stronger than ever.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Mm-hmm,” Rip interjects, still apparently not interested.</p><p> </p><p>

“Right. We're moving. Let's win this.” He walks out of shot, followed by Thatcher, then Valentine.</p><p> </p><p>

Cowboy Ricky Dale & Liberty vs. Peter Valentine & Rip Chord w/ Charlie Thatcher</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The fans want to be far more interested in this than they end up being. So much was expected, but what confuses people is when it sinks in that the reason isn't Peter Valentine. Ricky Dale and Liberty were both stars of the dying days of TWL, but evidently that doesn't translate into being able to get on the same page in terms of match styles.</p><p> </p><p>

Still, they do their best, and Texas is well represented. Valentine is hammered on the ropes often, and even Rip Chord only connects with the Rip Chord DDT on Dale after Charlie Thatcher catches the Cowboy's attention – and as Sparrow begins to count the fall, Thatcher hits a running big boot on Liberty to prevent a break.</p><p>

Dread vs. Dusty Streets</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Dusty shows here that he's a great wrestler – just one adrift without a push in the wake of his real-life feud with Sam Strong. He fights Dread well, even punching the big man through the ropes and out of the ring at one point; nonetheless, the shadow of fear ultimately overcomes him, pinning him after a pinpoint Dreadsault.</p><p>

Dread rises after the match – “and the ultimate hero is here!”</p><p> </p><p>

Strong blindsides him with the title belt, then attempts to piledrive Dread onto that same belt – but the shadow of fear powers out. Strong promptly unleashes a Strong Arm Tactic, staggering Dread, and again goes to the piledriver on the gold. </p><p> </p><p>

The title belt has now been stained with the blood of both men in the past couple of weeks, but Sam Strong seems confident. </p><p> </p><p>

He goes into his posing routine; the last thing the show carries is the shadow of fear rising up behind the ultimate hero, face slick with blood, fury in his eyes.</p><p> </p><p>

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s293.photobucket.com/user/trenchcoatbrigand/media/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/TheHype_zps5b660eaf.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/TheHype_zps5b660eaf.jpg</span></a></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

“There were a lot of arguments, just after Nemesis come in and took over the tags,” the Hype reminisces. “Were you better off tagging or doing singles work? The arrangement he had with Sam was watertight for the shows – if you look back, sometimes the tag teams main event the first hour and the solo stars main event the show, and then the next week it'd be the other way around – but we all knew whatever Nemesis planned, Sam had no intention of losing his hold on the main event at PPVs.</p><p> </p><p>

“But at the same time, people were wondering which booker was a better bet. For people like me, John, and a couple of the others, it didn't matter – we were just jobbers, and jobbers would take the fall for tag teams or solo guys - and Lucha had brought Electrico with him and had Stallings backing him, so he got to do some of both.</p><p> </p><p>

“The Flames wanted to go solo. That was their holy grail. On the other hand, Dusty Streets was looking for a tag partner, long-term, because it would get him out from under Sam's book.</p><p> </p><p>

“I don't think Dusty knew who had the book when he signed on. Don't think he would've if he'd known.</p><p> </p><p>

“But Nemesis doing tag teams was suddenly a way out. So that was kind of interesting, because for a lot of us, it's like, do I want to team with Dusty, annoy Sam, and be left struggling when Dusty hangs the boots up? Is it worth the short-term payday? Can I milk this?”</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>–</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="http://s293.photobucket.com/user/trenchcoatbrigand/media/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/CharlieThatcher_zpsc706a02b.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/CharlieThatcher_zpsc706a02b.jpg</span></a></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Charlie Thatcher laughs uproariously. “I don't think Peter realised he was being ribbed,” he says.</p><p> </p><p>

“Basically, Dread started it, but when Sam caught on to the rib he always claimed it was Nemesis. But Dread came to me in December and asked me to start no-selling whatever Peter said. Rip thought it was hilarious and stuck with it.</p><p> </p><p>

“This didn't help Peter at all, sure. But other than Peter Valentine and Sam Strong, nobody cared about helping Peter. It got me into exploring the funny side of the big enforcer gimmick, which basically went on to save my career. And it was hardly the worst rib of all.</p><p> </p><p>

“I still don't know what the Peaks did to Lawless down in LSW, but when they were called up they took the single worst rib I've ever seen. Nemesis always said you put in your time and you pay your dues and the business will look after you, and he stuck by that.”</p><p> </p><p>

He shrugs. “HollyWeird was a crazy place, man. Especially in the middle of that pissing match between the bookers.”</p>

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s293.photobucket.com/user/trenchcoatbrigand/media/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/HGC_zps9a894c88.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/HGC_zps9a894c88.jpg</span></a></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

It's another big night here in HollyWeird. It always is, of course - but this show is going to be great! We begin with the <strong>Blazing Flames</strong>, pioneers of the high-flying style, taking on representatives of Japan's Super Junior style hand-picked by the new HGC Director - <strong>Joshuya & Ota</strong>. Old school or new school?</p><p> </p><p>

Of course, we'll come back to that question, but first the HollyWeird Girls get their chance to shine.<strong> Ashley Amazon</strong>, apparently Dream Girl's dream woman, has already notched up one victory and looks to make it two against a luchadora with looks - the sultry <strong>Miss Mexico</strong>!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jimmy Power</strong> is still smarting from his failure to claim the International Championship, and is hoping to get back to winning ways. But it'll be tough - the man he's up against is <strong>Whistler</strong>, an ornery hombre who marches under Old Glory.</p><p> </p><p>

And rounding out the first hour, champion clashes with champion, though no title is on the line - <strong>Romeo Heartthrob</strong> is set to face down<strong> Sam Strong</strong>! The ultimate hero looks like a likely winner, but Heartthrob has almost the cunning of Rip Chord.</p><p> </p><p>

Jason Jackson's battle with the Untouchables continues. For weeks we've been seeing this, and for weeks we've heard nothing of the reason behind it, but the <strong>Tag Team Specialists</strong> take on New School <strong>Jason Jackson and his surprise ally, reckless rookie Ramon Paez</strong>.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Number one contendership</strong> follows; with the Powers of Hell set to face the Black Serpent Cult for the right to a second title match at the end of the month, three teams will clash for the right to face the Vessey Brothers that same night. The <strong>Demons of Rage</strong> face both the <strong>Nation of Filth</strong> and the <strong>Spirit Warriors</strong>, two teams whose pedigrees contain more tag action than the Powers - in fact, the Nation have been champions elsewhere.</p><p> </p><p>

And in the main event the tag team division clashes with the singles division as the <strong>Vessey Brothers</strong> take on <strong>Peter Valentine and Charlie Homicide</strong>. Both sides have gold - but which side has the will to win?</p><p> </p><p>

Prediction Key:</p><p>

Blazing Flames (Joey & Teddy Flame) vs. Joshuya & Ota (Super Joshuya & Fumihiro Ota)</p><p> </p><p>

Ashley Amazon w/ Dream Girl vs. Miss Mexico</p><p> </p><p>

Jimmy Power vs. Whistler</p><p> </p><p>

Romeo Heartthrob vs. Sam Strong (non-title)</p><p> </p><p>

The Tag Team Specialists (Joel Bryant & Robert Oxford) vs. Jason Jackson & Ramon Paez</p><p> </p><p>

#1 Contendership</p><p>

Demons of Rage (Demon Spite & Demon Anger) vs. Nation of Filth (Grunt & Stink) vs. Spirit Warriors (Dark EAGLE & Golden Fox)</p><p> </p><p>

The Vessey Brothers (Bryan Vessey & Larry Vessey) w/ Coach Dick Pangrazzio vs. Charlie Homicide & Peter Valentine w/ Charlie Thatcher & Karen Killer</p>
