Back to Bussiness

Review by: Mr.G

Back to Business seems like a tribute to the mafia genre in a way. Taking icons like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and putting them in a scenario like this is actually a very cool concept. Even the most serious people in the world have their funny side, so are mobsters.

This movie has a focus on the big 4: Tommy, Paulie, Frankie and Pete. Personally, I find it to be more interesting if they were mafias of different families(more on this later) but in this film, they are from the same family so they are friends to begin with. The film has a focus on the characters, which are well done actually, as all of the big 4 are given reasonable on-screen time to display their quirks in comedic ways.

Each of them are given different personalities and presentations throughout the story and that's cool but then...the latter parts aren't that good. I expect some clever schemes, be it original or ideas taken from some mafia movies, but there's ultimately none of them. Okay, I could do without clever schemes but...where are the funniness? The first half of the movie is much more clever and indepth when it comes to the comedy but they seem to all falter toward the end.

The second half is just...so simple. Vincent Domingo comes, harasses people and doing all sort of bad stuff. The ex-mobs lead the retirees in retiliation and eventually bring Vincent Domingo down...but way too easily. It's not really satisfying to say the least. The film might as well be all about the big 4 from front to the end instead of introducing Vincent Domingo because it breaks away the fun part and make the movie seems so dull. As the front part is so good, it's hard to not think negatively toward the sudden drop of comedic quality.

The solution is pretty simple, the studio needs to make the fight against Vincent Domingo more fun and epic instead of a simple come and go. The arrival of Vincent Domingo could be earlier, so there's more time on the rebellion part, which I imagine could be make funnier if given time to think of ideas. Or if the studio has more idea about the big 4, then the story can be about big 4 from different families and their battle to conquer the Shady Acres. Or there can be two rival families(Tommy and Paulie leading each one) that eventually unite together and became good friends as they join forces against Vincent Domingo. The studio can also spoof some ideas from famous mafia movies if they want to.

All in all, I would say this is 2.75 stars, could have been much more if the latter part don't fall flat.

Misc. Information

- 400,000 production value is more than enough for this movie due to the limited need of venues good job.

- The marketing budget and also the star power do help in putting more people to the theater. Granted most of the fans are long time fans of the talents(and are older on average), some of them do have families and the stars in this movie do acquire new, younger fans(age 20-35) out of this.

- The quality drop from first part to the second part does pull away some potential moviegoers from this film.

- The trend does help securing a fair amount of moviegoers.

- GM's Note: Robert De Niro should be given more screen time as the main lead. Judging the screen time by what you have written, he's equal or even lesser than the other 3 when it comes to description and scene detail. There will be minor penalty on this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Revenue: 16,872,000

Budget: 6,400,000

----------------------------

Gross Profit: 10,472,000

Post-release: 3,100,000

36% Bonus: 4,489,920

----------------------------

Net Profit: 4,882,080

True Bright Pictures's new capital = 6,900,000 + 4,882,080 + 424,500(Profit from Hack/Slash) = 12,206,580

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Impact

- Benjamin Bratt is blamed for dragging the film down. Well, it's not really his fault, he's just following the script but the people don't give a f*** about the detail. They will just blame whoever they please. Benjamin Bratt's SP decreased from 1.00 to 0.85.

- One of the hot topic on the internet is "Robert De Niro vs Al Pacino" and Al Pacino wins in this one as Robert De Niro doesn't seem to be doing enough in the film. Al Pacino's SP increased from 4.40 to 4.50.

- Some are surprised that Coen Brothers handle this kind of film fairly well. While it's still an average directing overall, but comedy really isn't Coen Brother's strong suit. Coen Brother's SP increased from 2.30 to 2.35.

Update

The trends are changing, please check the 3rd post for the new list.

- People's lust for action movies are satisfied.

- They still want horrors.

- Comedy are not as wanted as previously.

- People's desire for a good drama has increased.

- A top wanted serial killer was caught recently and his story and method are exposed on various media. This started the people's hunt for a good crime movie.

- Fantasy remains the top trend.

The initial sheet is done and is up on first post. Credit to Dakydaky for helping with the sheet.

The amount of talent is still not very huge so if you plan on using some stars in future and would like to get them into the database right now, you can list them and I will rate and put them in. If you wonder why the female talents' SP looked a little too low, sadly the movie business is male-oriented with male starring in most movies so the female talents do have lower SP on average. I hereby clarify that the maximum starting SP is 5.00 but a talent can go over that through the course of the game. There's no limit or cap for SP, a talent can reach 6.00, 7.00 and so on through progression of the game.

I will be adding an explanation page to the sheet soon, to serve as a readme for the sheet.

General question for everybody. Is anybody offended by swearing? Like in my movies or should I edit the swear words? Just curious as to everybody's thoughts as I don't want to offend anybody but personally feel its better unedited <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I can do Fables later. Or you can choose to delay it until your current film is out. As your studio's reputation grows, adaptation deals might be better on your side(as the other owners believe in your studio's ability and will be more fine with you doing it). It's up to you though, if you are confident with your current film you can consider delaying it but if you would like Fables ASAP then I can do it for you later.

As for swearing, I prefer unedited assuming it's not against this forum's rule(which I don't know all of them).

As for long, I write long-winded crap so I am fine with long. I prefer wall of texts more than TL;DR anyway. It also makes my review job easier if you can explain your film more thoroughly. However, long =/= instant quality though so it's not a contest of whose film is longest. Dakydaky asked a similar question few pages ago, if you want you can direct me to maybe google doc if your movie page if it is too long for the forum. However, if you want to link me to another site, please make a shorter synopsis here for the mass and for format's sake.

Shortened Plot: (May differ a bit from the actual plot, so please read the other one if you're interested, it's much better)Hedeon has spent all of his days in extremely profitable and respected Venice station with his wife Olga, who is a local Ranger. He makes money for his life by fishing, and he always prefers to work second shift. However, one day he notices that the fish he had caught look really different than the should, especially by their mouth, and when he cut one open, he noticed a parasite in it. When he told it to the local fisherman Yuri, the only reply he got was to stop trying to steal his spot. When he returned to the centre of the station, he immidiately noticed there was nobody around. And then he heard a lot of gunshots. He quickly began to run towards his home, but a hand grabbed him from behind. It was a man, rotting. He shot him in the head, but a certain smell started to spread, and his body couldn't take it. He stumbled on the ground unconsciously.

He woke up in an unknown place, with lights directly in his eyes. There was a figure of a man, and it slowly started to talk. He learned that the station is overrun, those things have killed everyone over the night, and nobody escaped. His name was Andrei. Hedeon never heard of him, but he believed he must have been one of the recruits from the latest injection. They have to carry the message to Polis. The man nodded him to come up, and follow him through the door after he takes the gun in the drawer.

When they were out, he noticed they were still in Venice. He couldn't hear a living soul, all until he heard a motorboat running behind him. It was Andrei, and he told him to jump in. They were riding for some time, and then Hedeon fell to sleep. After he woke up, Andrei looked nervous and confused. He told him that they are off the map in an unmarked set of tunnels, and that's when they saw the lights. Tunnel started collapsing. Motorboat's parts were flying all around in the explosion and Hedeon fell into the water. He was being dragged down by a giant rock, but managed to slip by it. After he made it to the surface, he once again looked at the lights, but they were so much closer this time, and then something hit him in the head.

When he woke up, he was heavily chained to a wall, with a man staring at him from palm hand's distance. There was another figure behind him, but when it started to talk, he noticed it was Andrei. Andrei told him that this is home to the Khui Klan, and that he did all. He killed everyone, and Olga. He will pay for it. Andrei said that the gods need one last sacrifice, however, and laughed.

He then ordered Hedeon to follow him through the set of tunnels, all the way to a clearing. Hedeon thought he was on the surface. But no. A heaven made out of trees, animals of every kinds, grass and flowers. All underground. Hedeon was brought to an operating table in the middle of the field, and Andrei told him that he is now in the field of dreams, the last place where gods have the authority over mankind. The last sacrifice must be done. But it's not you, said Andrei, it's me. He told Hedeon to take his gun and clothes, and to run. He won't give him a death in god's last fields. Andrei shot himself right in the head, and Hedeon took his clothers and gun and went to the exit.

When he reached the end of the fields, a man confronted him, but Hedeon broke his neck. And that's when others saw it. A dozen of men started to run behind him, and he could hear gunshots. He started to run for his life, with most of the bullets missing him, but one hit him straight in the ankle. He crumbled to floor, and started crying. It was his end, he could hear himself saying. The footsteps started to sound louder, and that's when he heard another long gunshot exchange, followed by total silence.

He opened his eyes and saw Olga. She is here for him. Out of all that he expected, the only thing that she said is: "We must inform them that we’ll all die unless we head for the surface. It’s over. And he’s going with us." She pointed towards the man in the dark corner, but he was certain it was Viktor. He will never forget that face. And he better not, Viktor might just be their key. Olga knows what she’s doing, and he never doubted that.
