Directed by: Coen Brothers

Genre: Action/Drama

PLOT:

Tony Args is a now-failed businessman who has recently lost his job in the recent financial slump, and as a result had to sell his apartment and move out. His recent events had made him depressed, but he is still the same old skilled, sturdy guy. His family invites him to their homestead in the other part of the country, and he decided to travel there, hopefully to rebuild his life. He has been single ever since his wife died from cancer three years ago, and looks to possibly move to his family’s home for the time being since the big cities don’t appeal to him anymore. On the plane he meets Farrah Syne, a beautiful young girl he immediately starts to fancy. She was a complete package, nice, good looking and young. What more could a man ask for? They sat next to each other and chat. He discovered that she comes from the same big ol’ town just as him, but is escaping because she got in trouble with a wrong group of people and has to flee from them to where nobody could find her. However, in the middle of the flight a lightning strike hits the plane and a power failure happens. The plane is on it’s way down and Tony Args only has time to get hold of Farrah Syne’s hand. The plane fastly descended towards the ground and after a brief moment an explosion happened. The pieces of airplane went flying through the air, with smaller explosion filling the silence that happened after the big one.

Tony Args woke up in an unknown place, looked around, but he noticed he couldn’t see anything. It was pure darkness. A darkness that shifted to pure white in a moment, then quickly faded back to darkness. A voice in his head starts to talk: “Welcome to the indigo stamen.” He tried to scream, but not a single sound was made. “You are locked within your senses. A brain without body. A soul without owner. You have made a mistake, and you know it.”, the voice told him. “ there should be no connection between living and dead”. Farrah survived, and they forged a connection between alive and dead. The link between their hands was a mistake. The exact place of crash is now open dimensional fissure, and he must close it. Both of them must either live, or die in order for it to be closed. There’s no middle ground. “This will be a dangerous trip, but don’t be scared to use your senses. Remember this, every time you lose a sense, you enter a different reality. If you don’t want something to be said, lose the hearing. If you don’t want something to be seen, close your eyes. It’s as simple as that. Use it to your advantage, and you might just as well bring you both here, or leave you both alive, I don’t care. You shall go now, and be quick, she might be dying:” He felt an intense pain in his body, and started to see light, finally. The other senses returned to him as well, and he could now smell burning wood.

He’s returned at the place of the crash, waking up in the pile of dirt. He doesn’t know where he is, but he can see that the police and medical teams are still there. He did not look hurt, but when a police officer noticed him, he started yelling indistinguishable words. And that’s when he noticed. An explosion. The gas is coming out. Tony quickly closed his eyes, and an enormous boom filled his ears like thousands of needles. He opened his eyes and noticed he is standing in the middle of the exploded field, yet again, but is not hurt. He started to run towards the nearest vehicle, and entered it. He noticed a policeman trying to stop him and yelled., but he covered his ears. Nothing more was said, and he started to drive towards where he believed the nearest city would be. Follow the traffic he thought, and everything will be fine. He arrived at the hospital, but the main gates were closed. All he had to do is close his eyes, and walk. He shifted the reality, and went right through the door. He asked where Farrah Syne is, and after a quick answer went straight towards the room. She was lying conscious on her bed, but looked visibly hurt, with scars and bruises covering her whole face. Her arm was also broken, he noticed. “Hey, Farrah. How are y...

He got cut out by a man entering the room, visibly armed with a silenced gun. He was standing in the far corner, and stood frozen when he saw the armed man. How did he get through the security? The man brought the gun up, and slowly started to pull the trigger of the gun that aimed straight at Farrah. He had to save her, to save him. He did only thing he could, he closed his eyes, and covered his ears. Nothing. The time stopped, and when he opened the eyes the man was reloading his weapon. Tony ran towards him, and tried to punch him, but the man dodged it. They fought for some moments until Tony managed to get the hold of now reloaded weapon and shot the man in the chest. The attacker fell on the floor. Tony knew they were in trouble and dragged her bed outside the room and the hospital. Surprisingly, nobody has tried to stop him, even the security.

When they got out, he approached the car he came in, and rolled her in the back seats. He entered the car and started to drive towards the town’s exit. Or at least where he thought it would be.

“Where are we?” asked Farrah. He explained to her what happened, but lied about him actually surviving it. She was one of the lucky flight attendants to actually survive. He asked her if she knew who the armed man was, and she answered him briefly. Those were the manhunts following her. Assassin for hire. She is the daughter of John Syne, one of the leading technological giants of today. If she dies, he will be left without direct heir, and the company will fall into the hands of Jeremy Vasco, who she told him was the man that hired the assassins. That must be why the plane was downed. Usually simple thunderstorm cannot bring an airplane down, but it definitely smells like sabotage.

“The important thing is to keep you safe”, said Tony,”and that’s why we are heading to the village of Dyneborough, and if you want to part ways, you can from there. Although I would love you to stay with me.” Tony smiled, but carefully. He knew she must actually stay with him. For the sake of protection of her, and him. If she dies, he dies too, and he knew it. He must marry her.

They travelled all over the state, kilometres and kilometres of wasteland. They had much time to talk, and get to know each other. He didn’t confess anything to her, not just yet. She is safer if she knows less.

They arrived at Dyneborough, and made progress towards the family home, but stopped at the gas stop to get something to drink. She was visibly happy to finally arrive where she hopes she can be safe. They entered the parking right in front of the parent’s home, but there was nobody sitting under the tree in front of the beautiful, two story building. Unusual. They both arrived at the front door, her leaning on Tony to relieve some of the pain. The mother will be able to help her. He knocked on the door, and again, but to no response. He waited for a moment, and then tried opening the door. Maybe they are in the backyard. They entered the big hallway, and went to the living room. He seated her there, and checked around the house. Nothing. Nobody is here. That’s when he heard a car entering the driveway.

And then he heard several running steps, and he ordered her not to move. He grabbed the gun from his father’s shelf, and waited for whoever that was. The door got destroyed, and man started to run in from the opposite side of the hallway. He shot one down, but only narrowly escaped the bullets. A man threw a grenade in, and that’s when he jumped. The most of the house exploded, and he took Farrah to the floor, covering her with his body, and closing his eyes. He felt his skin burning, but it didn’t hurt. He opened his eyes, and they were both alright. “How did you do th--at?” She wept, but he only had the time to lift her to her feet and run through the backdoor. They escaped through the forest, and found the exit at the other side of the woods. They were in a different village, but it seemed much larger tha Dyneborough. He couldn’t answer her questions on where they are going, because he wasn’t sure. He was just running for their lives.

“Listen to me, you must marry me, for our safety. I know it sounds terrible, but we have to do it. I love you, and I love to keep you safe.” She didn’t know how to respond, so she just kept quiet, but at last replied with a simple okay. She was visibly shaken from the recent events.

They went to the local church, and the Tony persuaded the priest to have them married at the very same moment. He hesitated, but in the end accepted his demand. They got married, and it was a relief for Tony. They went to the local motel and took the cheapest room, they had to take the night somewhere safe, and this would be the last place the assassins would come.

They slept together, but that’s when she started to show signs of extreme pain. Tony brought her pills from the bathroom, but to no avail. She was crying, but he knew it would be a suicide to go looking for a hospital with the assassins on their tail. She had to get through the pain, and it hurt him to see his “wife” be in such an extreme pain. The morning came after the lengthy night, and with it, a phone call. Farrah’s mobile phone rang, and the phone said it was “Syneco” calling. He picked up the phone, and heard the news. Farrah’s father passed away. She is now the full owner of the company. He never wanted any of this, but as long as it will keep them safe, he’s happy. They gave the man their location and waited for the helicopter to come pick them both up.

When the helicopter arrived, they entered it, relieved that they are finally getting to be safe. But Tony noticed that the man has a gun, unnecessarily. In the middle of the flight, they noticed they are going the wrong way. “Man, I think you are going the wrong way.” But the man smiled and denied in, touching his gun. It was really a poor attempt, Tony thought and grabbed the gun from the inside of his jacket, shooting the man on the spot, and throwing him out of the helicopter. “Honey, we go home now.”

They have arrived back at the city, where it all started. She showed him the landing of the Syneco building, and they landed on the top, and slowly made their way to the bottom. They managed to get straight at the front door of the President’s office, and there were two guards on the doors. As soon as they saw them they raised their guns, but Tony put himself in front of her, and simply closed his eyes. He heard bullets ripping through his flesh, but felt nothing. When the sounds stopped, he opened his eyes and took down the two guards with precise shots. He opened the doors, and there was a man. Sitting at the desk, smoking, and laughing. The name plate said : Jeremy Vasco. He had the most vicious, ugliest smile a man could imagine. “Welcome at my company, lovely couple. Thanks for bringing her to me, your efforts might be rewarded. With your life.”, he smiled again. Tony started to approach him from the anger, but noticed somebody had grabbed the girl. It was one of the man’s guards. The storm was coming, and it filled the scene of man’s manical laughter. “I will thank you again, for getting the girl to me”. Tony started to walk towards him immediately, but the man did not even move. Tony grabbed his head and started punching him, and the man managed to spit out the words through the blood: “Make her fly.” The guard pushed Farrah towards the window, and she fell. The guard effectively kicked her, and she fell through the broken window of the huge building.

Tony closed his eyes, but how will that help him? He opened them, and almost ripped the man’s head off, with the blood running down his destroyed neck. The guard started to run towards Tony, but tony evaded him, and leapt from the edge of the room. Five more seconds, and they’ll be together again. Just like he was asked to do, he closed the dimensional fissure. Both alive, or dead. Connected until eternity.

That day the news reported the fatal assault of Tony Args on leading minds of Syneco, and the terrible day it was. But for the two souls bonded together, He has done the best thing he could. He saved them from true hell.

The screen fades to black and credits start to roll.

Plot-Dale(Rogan) and Saul(Franco) , now living together in LA after the events of the first movie, are best buds, and the best sellers of "buds" in their county. They're living the life, happy as can be. Saul even has a hot girlfriend(Dennings) who loves him, but objects to his "work" life. Just when things look like they can't go wrong, something goes horribly wrong. A major crime boss(Bruce Willis) takes notice to the major market these guys are getting, and he demands a piece of their business.

Of course, Dale and Saul refuse, not taking his threats seriously. Mr. Poppadowski(Willis) shows them just how serious he is. He kidnaps Sauls girlfiend(Dennings) and holds her for ransom. Demanding that Dale and Saul meet him face to face if he ever wants to see her alive again. Of course, they agree to his demands, much to the chagrin of Dale, who seems to be sure that it's a set up to get all 3 of them killed.

Mr. Poppadowski's son(Zach Galifinakis) who wants nothing more than to impress his dad, be like him and take over the family business, is consistently shunned by his father. He never feels good enough, doesn't feel loved by his dad, is tasked with the job of guarding Sauls girlfriend(Dennings) She puts thoughts in his head that his dad doesn't love him, that he'll never be good enough, etc. Danny(Zach G.) not being the brightest bulb in the box, belives everything he's being told. He leaves his post, and manages to track down Dale and Saul before they get to his father, he warns them what his dads plan is, and offers his help.

They're very reluctant to accept his help at first, but when he presents to them an insane amount of weapons to use against his father, they have no choice but to accept. The 3 smoke an insane amount of weed, weapon up, and head out to face Mr. Poppadowski and rescue Carley(Kat Dennings)

A hilarious gang war ensues, and eventually Mr. Poppadowski is killed by a wild bear(Yeah, his hideout is deep in the woods). He dies in his sons arms, and hands over the business to him, telling him that he forgives him for his betrayl. As Saul, Dale and Carley escape, they go about their normal lives, happy as can be, having no clue what happened to Danny(Zach). Saul and Dale even decide to give up their life as pot dealers and get real jobs.

In the end, 6 months later we see Danny(Zach) setting up his own criminal empire, following in his fathers footsteps, swearing revenge on Dale and Saul even it's the last thing he does. (MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA)

Now, in an act of desperation he contacts former friend, a cop-turned-assassin Angelo Perez[Garcia] to help with his problems. Through the movie, Garcia stalks his prey, learning his habits trying to find the man at his most vulnerable, but a problem arises. Vincente is never alone. Angelo finds out the only way to help his friend... is to go to war with Vincente's entire gang.

With the realization, Angelo figures out the plan and starts preparing, getting things ready for the big showdown. After preparations are made, he sleeps on the roof overlooking one of the gangs hangouts and waits. Just as some of Vincente's men are coming into the location... BOOM! A bomb that Angelo had set blows up, leveling the base and killing several of Vincenete's men. Unfortuantely, Vincente's time of arrival was a few seconds after the bomb went off, and he drove away like a bat out of hell. This made Vincente have to protect himself even more than usual, now having armed guards with him almost 24/7. Angelo and Krasinski had a meeting and he told Krasinski that it seemed to be an impossible mark and apologized, telling him he would have to forfeit this task. Just as he's leaving Krasinski calls him back into the office. He has an idea.

During this time, Vincene is torturing all kinds of people trying to find who tried to kill him. One of the cops cracks and mentions that Krasinski's been wanting Vincente's head since his family was murdered. Meanwhile, Vincente is called into court. In a case involving Krasinski. Vincente sees this as the perfect opportunity to get rid of Krasinski. During the court meeting, where Krasinski is trying to prove Vincente was the killer, one of Vincente's men confesses to killing Krassinski's family, then proceeds to pull out a gun and shoot Krassinski himself. Angelo is watching from the back of the court the entire time. Once Krassinski is dead, he leaves himself. The judge has no choice. With the confession and nobody to testify against Vincente, he is proclaimed innocent of the crimes. Once Vincente leaves the court room, a free man with a huge smile on his face, it finally happens. Angelo rushes him and stabs him right in the stomach, before making a getaway in Krasinski's car, which was left running. The movie ends with the cop who ratted to Vincente and Angelo in a diner. He slips Angelo an envelope telling him he was instructed to give it to him if and when Vincente died. Without another word, Angelo takes the envelope and leaves, driving off into the distance.

Plot - We start off with Abrafo heading towards a church in the middle of the Congolese rainforest with a bag in his hand. As he looks to the left, there is an enclosure with approximately 20 chimpanzees in it. He gets to the church and a doorman says "Abrafo, you're late." We are now introduced to Mook who berates Abrafo before hurrying him inside. There we meet the Voodoo High Priest (Temuera Morrison). "What are we doing here Mook?" Abrafo asks. Mook proceeds to explain his plan before telling Abrafo to retrieve a chimp from the backroom. The Voodoo High Priest mutters "It is time." The High Priest starts chanting as he smears the berries which Abrafo had collected earlier over the chimp, which was now tied down on a stone tablet above a firepit. The room starts shaking. "What the f**k is happening?" Abrafo questions loudly before fire shoots up from the pit, engulfing the chimpanzee and then shooting into a pendant that the High Priest holds in his hand. "Did it work" Mook asks agitated. The High Priest says nothing, instead just raising the pendant high in the air. At this point, the very-burnt chimpanzee sits up. "HOLY F**K!" Abrafo screams. "If you think that's cool, watch this." Mook replies as he motions for the doorman to come in. Mook looks towards the High Priest and simply nods. The High Priest then raises the pendant again and the chimp attacks the doorman, ripping his skull open with it's bare hands. It takes a bite out of the doormans brains and then runs off out the front door. We then see the doorman start convulsing violently before morphing into what can only be described as a half man, half chimpanzee. Mook laughs hard as he witnesses Abrafo vomitting in disgust. Mook then walks over to the High Priest and shoots him in the head, taking the pendant and attaching it to a necklace he is wearing, laughing maniacally the whole time. Abrafo says "I didn't sign up for this sh*t man" and starts to leave, Mook still laughing in the background. "Where you going Abrafo? You haven't had your turn yet." Abrafo starts to run faster as Mook raises the pendant high and yells "GET HIM!" As Abrafo gets outside he sees the original chimp has turned all of the others that were outside previously and they all start to chase him also. As Abrafo runs off the title "CHIMPANZOMBEES" hits the screen.

Act 2

We now cut to Baltimore, where we see Dr. Wesley Wire in his home watching the news. A certain story catches his attention. Numerous reports out of Congo claim that there has been multiple sightings of an "Ape-man" roaming the Congolese rainforest and also sightings of a group of "very dead-looking chimps". Right on cue, Wesleys phone rings. "Dr. Wire speaking." "Hello Dr. Wire, this is Dafari Kengo, the Congolese president. I have a matter of extreme urgency to discuss with you." The president explains everything that is happening. "You are the most revered primatologist in the world. I would like to fly you here on my private jet to see if you can find what is causing this strange behaviour. You will be handsomely compensated of course." Wesley is still trying to process all of this but after seeing what he saw on the news, curiousity gets the better of him. "Ok, but I have to bring my wife and son with me." "It's a deal" Kengo replies. Wesley then goes to tell his wife and son that they are all going to Congo.

We now cut to a plane landing and the Wire family all exiting the plane. They are greeted by a man armed heavily. He introduces himself as Ruben N'Diaye, the Presidents top bodyguard. "Let's go" Ruben says and they all get in the car. They arrive at the presidential residence and we meet a white man with an eyepatch, smoking a cigar and drinking brandy. "Is that the president?" Preston asks his mother quietly. The man laughs heartily. "HAHAHAHAHA, I am Kaspar Schmidt, hired gun. It's a pleasure to meet you all." A voice then sounds from behind the Wire family. "Dr. Wire, it's a pleasure to meet you. I am President Kengo, but you can call me Dafari" he says as he shakes Wesleys hand. "Why exactly are we here Mr. president?" Nala asks. President Kengo then goes into details about what has happened so far, what he needs from Wesley and why Kaspar is there also. "Kaspar is the top hired gun in the world and he will be your protection. I will also send Ruben with you." "But, sir" Ruben starts to say before being cut off. "But nothing. This is a matter of national importance and I need the best men on it. You, Ruben, are the best that Congo has to offer. This is not up for debate." Ruben accepts his new job begrudgingly. They start to look over the news footage and Wesley says "This is going to sound strange but they look like an ape version of zombies." Preston then walks over and says "They aren't zombies. They're Chimpanzombees."

We now cut back to Mook who has arrived at a small village with his small, undead army following behind him. He simply walks to the center of the village, raises the pendant sky-high and yells "ATTACK!" The chimp army goes nuts, attacking and killing everbody in sight; man, woman or child. This village has now turned into an undead army, making Mooks army even stronger. "Now, to find my old friend Abrafo" he says laughing.

Kaspar, Wesley, Nala and Preston arrive at a small bar to get a drink and some food. We see a man sitting at the bar, muttering under his breath and downing shot after shot of whiskey. Kaspar orders a round of drinks and then says, quite loudly, "so, undead monkeys huh. That's pretty crazy right." This captures the attention of the man at the bar, who is now revealed to be Abrafo. He turns to the table and says "I know what started this and I know how to finish it." His breath reeks of whiskey. "Why should we believe you. You're drunk." Wesley says. Before Abrafo can elaborate, a drunk american tourist (Sasha Grey) walks over and sits in the middle of the table. "Any of you handsome guys wanna have some fun. Especially you" she says, looking at Preston. Nala glares at the girl, clenching her fists hard. "Ok, fine" the girl says. "I'm leaving, but if you change your mind, I'll be over there." With the tourist gone, Abrafo goes on to tell everybody about what he witnessed and draws on a map where the church is. "Why are you helping us?" Wesley asks. Abrafo drinks another shot of whiskey before saying "This motherf**er tried to kill me. I want him dead. We all benefit from this. Now, I will help you but first, I'm going to go and smoke a joint and taste me some sweet american pie, hahahaha." A couple of minutes after Abrafo leaves, Preston gets up. "I need to go to the bathroom." But Preston is actually looking for Abrafo as he wants to smoke some weed. He goes out the back door of the pub to find Abrafo with the american tourist. "You wanna hit little man?" Abrafo passes the joint to Preston who takes a big puff, inhales then finally exhales. "This tastes funny" Preston says. Abrafo laughs. "That's because I lace my shit with PCP. You're about to get f**ed up man!" Preston starts to freak out. "Relax homie. Come and join in with me and this american girl. Get your end wet. It'll help you relax." Preston just stares as he is now in a paralytic state from the PCP-laced joint. "Suit yourself man." Abrafo says as he walks off. We cut to Abrafo and his american friend having aggressive, drug-fueled sex. We can now see Mook is hiding in the bushes and he says to himself "I've got you now." We cut between scenes of the two having sex and of three undead chimps swinging from branch to branch. This happens three times until we see the chimps swing down onto the fornicating couple. Abrafo manages to fight one off but the american tourist stands no chance. Eventually, Abrafo succumbs to the numbers game and his last word is a simple "F**K!" (The ultimate horror cliche of a couple dying while having sex <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />)

Preston manages to make his way back into the bar and sees Ruben panicking, telling everybody they have to go as there is an emergency. Ruben starts to explain about the village and then Wesley and Kaspar go on to talk about how they know exactly what started it, where they need to go and how they can stop it. "Well then, let's go" Ruben says.

ACT 3

We cut to everybody walking through the rainforest, all of them armed. They hear a rustling nearby. "I'll investigate" Ruben says. He pulls back the bush where the noise is coming from to reveal a small spider monkey. As he turns to give the all-clear, a chimpanzombee jumps down and grabs Rubens face as he screams out in pain. Nala is the first to rush to Rubens rescue when she gets tackled by our original ape-man, the doorman. After a big struggle, the team take down the chimps and ape-man. We see Ruben on the ground and Kaspar knows what is about to happen and what he has to do. "I'm sorry brother" he says before shooting Ruben in the head. Wesley checks on Nala, who pulls her shirt down to hide a gash on her side and says she's fine and they must continue on.

After what seems like hours, they arrive at their destination. The enclosure has now been repaired and there are what seems like 30 undead chimps in there, all in a docile, zombie-like state. Preston says "I have an idea" and takes off into the bush. He comes back with his arms full of a moss-like plant. "It's called Old Mans Beard and it is highly flammable. I saw it on Man vs Wild one time." Preston lays the Old Mans Beard around the outside of the enclosure, pulls a cigarette out of his pocket and lights it. He takes two puffs, much to his parents bewilderment, and then throws the rest onto the plant, igniting it instantly. The chimps go up in flames, making them easy targets. Kaspar says they can finish these guys off while he goes after the top dog. Kaspar runs off inside and out of nowhere, Ape-Abrafo jumps down and attacks Nala, ripping her skull open. "NOOOOO!" Wesley screams. In a moment of pure anger he unloads a full clip into Ape-Abrafos brain. He turns to see his once-wife has turned into one of these creatures. She slowly lumbers towards Wesley until BOOM! Her head explodes. We see Preston with a shotgun. "Let's go end this dad."

They run inside and can tell where Kaspar has been as there is a trail of undead chimp and ape-man bodies. We now see Kaspar having a machete battle with Mook. Only thing is, Mook has two machetes. He knocks Kaspar down. Instead of finishing him off, he dips his machetes into a drum of liquid, then into the fire-pit. He now has two fire-machetes. They continue to fight until again, Mook knocks down Kaspar, this time knocking his machete loose. He laughs as he walks over to Kaspar. "Hey, you killed my wife. Now I'm gonna kill you." Mook turns to see Wesley standing next to the fire-pit. "You need rest. You look like you're burning up" Wesley says as he throws the flammable liquid at Mook. The flames from the machetes ignite Mook and he falls into the flame-pit. (Classic cheesy line from any action/horror type movie <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />)

We now cut to a week later and the three survivng heroes are getting bravery awards from the President. The president asks everybody what their plans are now that they saved his country. Kaspar says he is heading back to Germany as he has been offered a job (setting up the spin-off movie <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />).

The Connection

Review by: Mr.G

What so impressive about The Connection to Mr.G is the creativity. One of the special elements of this film is that the main character has the ability to play with his senses. Close his eyes and any vision are denied and vice versa. Yeah I know, it's kind of like superpower. The film starts out with a simple plane ride, where Tony Args(Matt Damon) met Farrah Syne(Lena Headey)[i don't buy Lena Headay as a young lady, she's 39, still radiant and beautiful, but not young]. Everything is going just fine...until a lightning hits the plane and we finally get to the real story.

Thank you lightning, for this film will not exist without you, and at that point Tony Args acquire his "power" and get to know that his existence depends on Farrah Syne as well, their life are "chained" together through some "scientifically-proven" supernatural type of phenomenon and Tony Args is set on a quest to keep the lady safe just so he can stay alive too at the same time. There's ton of action in this one as the assassin are still on Farrah's tail the whole darn time. Aside from action, there's also some solid character development but flawed at the same time(more on this later).

Sealing off the movie is a final showdown with Jeremy Vasco(Adrien Brody) at the company building, which is pretty solid for a climax. On the general basis, this film has pretty much everything well covered so there's no doubt this is going to do well in the rating. However, there are some things I would like to talk about. First, I don't think drama should be on the genre list as I consider "drama" to be a sub-sub-genre for this film. Of course, this film has a ton of elements, I would argue that this is a sci-fi/action/thriller/romance/drama but the top 2 genres in my view are sci-fi and action. Sci-fi is a broad genre, one doesn't have to be space-related or have robots to be a sci-fi, The Connection employs a more "subtle" type of sci-fi with the power of senses and it has a very sci-fi-ish beginning to start the story off. The middle and the end possess a very action way of approach, tons of actions, high intensity, explosion and so on and that is why I consider this as sci-fi/action. Furthermore, the film focuses on the action side of thing with only a few slow spots that are necessarily to develop the characters a little bit but ultimately, it's very much an action film style of approach.

Drama, at its core, is focused hugely on the characters(especially the main protagonist) and their emotional and relational development. It's focused on the story of human struggles and sadly, I consider the relational development to be the few problematic parts of this film. The main character needs more than that single relationship if he wants to have a drama level of development, which he doesn't have the whole time. Also, the relationship between Tony Args and Farrah Syne is just...unnatural, especially in the middle part. I don't especially buy their marriage as I fail to see why they have to marry to each other. They can be acquaintance, as long as neither of them doesn't die, it's fine. I fail to see how a marriage would help aside from making the relationship between them so much weirder and unrealistic(which is the opposite of drama). I am fine with them being closer to each other along the way but for them to be husband and wife out of nowhere is just too fast. While this sort of development will not really affect the score of a pure action film, I have to lower the mark for an "action/drama". There are also some unreal moments like Tony Args knowing how to operate a helicopter while being a businessman and without proper explanation, again, doesn't fit with drama but great for action film. That and I don't get how the assassin can manipulate thunderstorm into hitting the airplane, that has to be the most unrealistic part of this film. (And FYI, simple thunderstorm can bring an airplane down, I remembered a documentary that covers airplane incident caused by thunder strike. The rate is very low, like 1.xx airplane per year but it does happen)

Throughout the movie, I don't necessarily like the setup of the final showdown because it's not hard to figure out that the company is a dangerous place as they are stepping into the assassin's territory. I consider this a small flaw on the overall story structure, but merely a small flaw.

The ending is such a downer, I assume it's more or less to fit the drama genre but after watching the entire movie, I just don't feel it to be truly fitting based on how the film progresses. After all, Tony Args has kept the girl alive for so long and for him to fail so easily at the end, it's hard to shake off a feel of betrayal. It gives me a sense of "why bother? You are all dying in the end anyway" type of feeling and it's not easy to swallow that, considering that most(if not all) action films finish on a good ending and based on the overall progression of this film, I kind of settled on an action film ending. I am not sure if forcing sadness out of the ending is a good thing, but I think it's a pretty brave decision to do so albeit I don't fully agree with it. Personally, I think the ending should be the time both of them finally bond together as one, instead of some lame marriage in the middle. Part of me also wonder why the protagonist doesn't use his power there -- he could close his eyes, transcend through time and space and stay alive with his superpower.

All in all, I think if this is a sci-fi/action, or just pure action movie, I would have given something like 4.00 to 4.25 but since drama is on the list, I have to judge accordingly and this is a 3.75 stars. Very close to a 4, but just not there. Barely, and sadly.

Misc. Information

- Action is not in the genre and drama is on a good spot. Mixing them both give you an average so only a minor boost. However, the minor boost is slightly decreased as well due to this one being more action than drama. Some moviegoers are fine with this one as a drama; some not so it's 50:50.

- The movie is praised for its realistic and solid effects all around.

- Could have been slightly longer, especially when you want to employ dramatic elements.

- GM's Note: Slight penalty for changing rating from PG-13 to R although R is the right call in my view.

- GM's Note: One of the reasons this is of a high score is because this is by far your most complete movie in terms of structure. Clear beginning, middle and end.

- GM's Note: Next time when you do cameo please list the cameo talent name on their scene and maybe describe the scene more on the cameo's view. It's easier for me this way as I can see the impact of the cameo and I don't have to backtrack to the previous posts just to see what sort of cameo are they doing.

- GM's Note: If you wonder what makes a drama, drama, I guess I will go with Gladiator(2000) as an example. While technically an epic historical drama film, some sites do put "action" into its genre. Gladiator is hugely focused on Maximus and his "life adventure", from betrayal to his rising as a gladiator. The story ultimately revolves around him -- his drive, his motivation, everything is depict well in the film. The Connection has a very action sort of approach from beginning to the end, nothing too dramatic about it and Tony Args' main development is only his relationship with the girl. His businessman background and other personalities and relationship are not developed throughout the film.

- GM's Note: I am being a hard ass on genre because ultimately I want to make sure the movie is a link to its genre, to prevent people from just reaping award from the trend too easily. While the trend is important, don't be afraid to just write whatever your mind have as a great movie will triumph over an average movie with trend support.

- GM's Note: Do note that as your budget goes bigger, you should consider using more stars in your film(in any roles) to increase star value. It's my way of trying to make sure more talents can get job and I think it is pretty normal for a movie to use a lot of stars, with more supporting roles as the scale increases.

Impact

- Matt Damon is said to be the true performer in this film, some even said he carries the whole film on his own. Matt Damon's SP increased from 3.75 to 4.10. Matt Damon wanted to try something else now that he has done enough for the action and drama genre. His next movie cannot be of action and/or drama genre.

- Lena Headey's performance is decent but she should thank Matt Damon for "enhancing" her role. Lena Headey's SP increased from 1.45 to 1.65.

- Many people find that some other directors could have done a better job than Coen Brothers, despite the success. Coen Brothers' SP decreased from 2.30 to 2.25.

LA Underground

Review by: Mr.G

LA Underground revolves around a triangle of characters -- Police Commissioner Krasinski(Ray Liotta), ex-cop-now-assassin Angelo Perez(Andy Garcia) and crime lord Lorenzo Vincente(Ray Liotta). Personally, I find Krasinski and Vincente to be much more interesting than the supposed main lead Angelo Perez. Both of them just have so much personality compared to the dull and boring Angelo Perez, which is an assassin...and that's about it. Krasinski has motivation and a good background. His desire to change himself and really punish the criminal is fun to know and Danny Devito is pretty much one heck of a villain, mostly thanks to the sadistic scenes provided to his character.

There's some deja vu on Andy Garcia's character, it's hard to shake off the image of his Dirty Old Bastard's character because he is also doing his fair share of stalking throughout this film. Not to mention that his character in Dirty Old Bastard has so much depth over his current one, which is your average assassin. He's the main lead, I am very interested in his background, like why he leaves the force to be an assassin? Does he perfer "The Punisher" way of Justice, something the police force can't do? Or there's some other personal reason, none really explained in the film. As dull as his character can be, I have to admit that Andy Garcia still portrays his character impressively and with flair.

Angelo Perez's initial plan failed and this means Krasinski has to take another approach, which he did. While the court scene is intense as it is, it's hard to believe that one of the goons is able to carry gun into the court and even proceed to shoot someone inside the court, I consider that as one of the most unrealistic part of this movie, bordering a "WT*" level. The final kill of Angelo to Lorenzo, while fitting, is lacking in tension. It doesn't really have the feel of a climax or finale.

Overall, the actors actually carry this film as this is ultimately a very average(some maybe argue slightly under average) crime film with underdeveloped characters. The talents' performance did secure this one a 2.25 stars.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Misc. Information

- While the average crime film is likely longer, the content of this one seems to be suitable for 94 mins.

- Crime is a huge trend, so definitely a good boost on this one albeit a little short-lived as the trend can't lure too many people after the averagely-scored reviews are out.

- Still, the box office is actually surprisingly good for this one, albeit the regular score.

- Again, marketing is usually more important than production in the early phase. No one is going to be too picky with a starting studio's production value but marketing is hugely important in spreading words about your movie. You can't get box office without people knowing about it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Impact

- Andy Garcia is mostly remembered for his stalking part in this one. While an acting expert would comment that his performance on such a lacking character is quite amusing, the public doesn't necessarily see it that way(or that deeply). Andy Garcia's SP increased slightly, from 2.05 to 2.10. Andy Garcia is afraid that if he doesn't shake of the stalker image, he might soon be listed in the official sex offender list. He will not be include in any film that has any sort of stalker elment for his next 3 films.

- Ray Liotta and Danny Devito take solid praise for playing such wonderful characters beautifully. Both of them get a 0.15 SP rise.

- DJ Caruso takes a slight hit on this one as the public thinks his direction is dull and he should have try to save the film more. He takes a slight 0.05 hit on SP. D.J. Caruso would like to do something other than crime genre next.
