The David Mack Chronicles: NYCW 2014- The Changing of the Guard

Recommended Posts

You know I just can't play NYCW in the 2014 C-Verse. Once Devastating Don was added to the roster I just could not bring myself to play as them despite the fact that they are one of my favorite companies in the game. I just stick with the 2013 version.

Dean Waldorf VS Masked Mauler

It looks like you are doing what I always do to MM, making him job in singles matches.

Marv Statler VS Rick Sanders

Whistler VS Andrew Harper© for the Tri-State Regional Championship

Whistler's is older than dirt so I cannot see him getting the title.

Steve Flash & Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Black Hat Bailey & Honest Frank

SharkCage VS Ota and Monty Trescarde

???? VS Man Mountain Cahill

Dean Waldorf VS Masked Mauler

Marv Statler VS Rick Sanders

I go the usual 1-1 with these two, the question is who is going to win where? I´m actually going to say that Mauler wins he´s match as while before I always thought Sanders was the better guy from their team, it looks like Mauler has passed Sanders in 2014 or at least he seems to be above him at the start as far as push goes.

Whistler VS Andrew Harper© for the Tri-State Regional Championship

Whistler is kind of tough opponent for Harper and usually I would pick Whistler to win but I think it´s still too early for a title change so Harper gets another shot to show how he does with the belt.

Steve Flash & Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Black Hat Bailey & Honest Frank

Smith is the only one with much future left and while the other three have been big names for years, I´d still say that at this point, Smith is the most important roster member from these four.

SharkCage VS Ota and Monty Trescarde

As much as I like Sammy, he feels like bit of a weak link here.

???? VS Man Mountain Cahill

This is actually a bit tougher pick than it would usually be with hired help, simply because the guy you picked must be pretty talented if you willing to put him and Cahill in main event above SharkCage vs. Ota & Monty and having someone talented to lose Cahill feels.... well, wrong? I dunno, but despite what I just said, I still go with Cahill simply because I feel that one shot hired help shouldn´t go over one of your top guys, espesially not one who´s chasing the main belt.

Dean Waldorf VS Masked Mauler

Marv Statler VS Rick Sanders

Got to agree with everyone else, this will be the usual feuding tag teams split the singles matches situation.

Whistler VS Andrew Harper© for the Tri-State Regional Championship

I don't see Harper holding this belt for too much longer, as he hasn't really impressed all that much as the Tri-State champion but he isn't going to drop it to the geriatric flag waver.

Steve Flash & Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Black Hat Bailey & Honest Frank

Unless the bigger promotions are sniffing around, as everyone else said Bulldozer's the only one who needs building for the future, whilst the rest are all on their way down and eventually out.

SharkCage VS Ota and Monty Trescarde

Completely agree with Zergon here, when I look at this match in terms of recent push, perennial midcarder Sammy Shark appears to be the weak link.

???? VS Man Mountain Cahill

Quadruple Question Mark will probably be someone with a decent amount of wrestling talent and regional overness, but they are being brought in as a one shot stop gap and Cahill's 'path of destruction' gimmick is one of the major focuses of the promotion right now.

Dean Waldorf VS Masked Mauler

I don't like Mauler - in my experience, he's only any good teaming with Sanders - but he should beat the weak link in the Ring Generals

Marv Statler VS Rick Sanders

The best members of each team, I'll go with the younger man here

Whistler VS Andrew Harper© for the Tri-State Regional Championship

Whistler should really have retired by now.

Steve Flash & Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Black Hat Bailey & Honest Frank

Bulldozer needs to be pushed - he's young, can talk and can wrestle, a rare combination for NYCW

SharkCage VS Ota and Monty Trescarde

I'm not the biggest fan of SharkCage - Sammy couldn't get over if he rescued orphans from a burning building and Cage always leaves me after a few shows. Plus, Ota is the best heel you have, so I'll go with the Financial Ninja team.

???? VS Man Mountain Cahil

I'd like you to bring in someone awesome and have them beat Cahill in their debut...but I think Cahill is going over here to contiue the build for Cahill vs Cage

Great to see you and NYCW back, but I have to ask why you had David Mack retire? Was it to give yourself more of a challenge, or was that just where the story led you? I'll miss his battles with Ota, Warrior of Darkness :(

Thanks for the welcome back. Yes I retired him as a wrestler both for the greater challenge, and also as part of trying to do something a little different than I did for the last two NYCW dynasties I did. While the overall story is the same, ie growing NYCW from small to regional and hopefully to cult and beyond, while dealing with talent being stolen left and right, before, my character was always there as a safety net. He was someone who could hold the Empire title if needed, and be guaranteed of giving a good to great main event depending on build, storyline heat and the opponent. This time, that safety net is gone and its all about the skills as a booker.

NYCW SPRING SHOWDOWN

Saturday Week 2 April 2014

Held at the Ministry in Queens Att: 1000 (SOLD OUT)

PRE SHOW

Five training matches were held this month with a mixture of singles and tag team action. One interesting note is apparently Borne works really well with larger men as following a nice sell job in squashing for Bailey last month, he does similarly well in working out the mystery wrestler we brought in for the main event tonight. As usual the valets have a contest before we kick off the main show to amp up the crowd. The theme this month is Easter bunny ears and cottontails as Haley wins this particular ‘contest’.

MAIN SHOW

Rock Downpour: Welcome to NYCW SPRING SHOWDOWN and we have an exciting night of action for you, capped off by a mystery wrestler who will be taking on the rampaging Man Mountain Cahill in the Main Event.

Ernie Turner: He better be one tough individual to want to step into the ring with Cahill considering the path of destruction he has been on recently. Either that or he’s not that bright.

Rock: All I know is that it is someone who is known nationally and has gotten victories over some of the biggest names in the sport. But we start tonight off with Ring Generals and OSP meeting in singles action starting with Dean Waldorf taking on the Masked Mauler.

Turner: This is not a smart move on the Ring Generals part. As a tag team they are formidable, but both members of OSP are also accomplished singles wrestlers as well as a championship tag team.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/DeanWaldorf.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TheMaskedMauler.jpg

Dean Waldorf VS The Masked Mauler in a one fall singles match.

Dean is the slightly more experienced Ring General when it comes to tying people up on the mat and stringing together combinations, although his partner is no slouch and Marv is somewhat smoother and crisper in his execution of moves than Waldorf, again only by a little bit. Mauler doesn’t have the same ring skill level that Waldorf does, but what he does have is an experience edge and a willingness to bend the rules to his favor and the ring awareness to get away with it. In the end it’s that willingness and experience to know how and when to use underhanded tactics that allows Mauler to knock out Waldorf with a foreign object and then slap on a perfunctory Iron Claw to get a submission win when Waldorf’s arm hits the mat for a 3rd time.

The Masked Mauler defeated Dean Waldorf in 15:19 by submission with an Iron Claw.

Match Rating D-

Decent opening match as the tag feud continues. While these two are the backbone of the tag division, matches like this let me determine the value of possibly breaking up the team and having one of them go singles. In OSP’s case Mauler seems to be the more likely to be able to do well in singles at this time while things between Statler and Waldorf seem to be fairly equal.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Round one goes to OSP, let’s see if Statler can even it up or if Sanders makes it a clean sweep.

Turner: Mauler once again proves old age and cheating beats youth and skill. I bet Sanders teaches Statler the same lesson.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/MarvStatler.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RickSanders-1.jpg

Marv Statler VS Rick Sanders in a one fall singles match.

Sanders actually has the chops to go with Statler in a technical wrestling match, so doesn’t rely on shortcuts as much as his partner. Both men are fairly even with Statler’s smoother performance offset by Sanders greater ring experience. But the deciding factor becomes the fact that Statler is in his prime while Sanders is not quite as sharp as he once was and being a hair slower leads to becoming victim to Statler’s Backdrop Backbreaker and getting pinned.

Marv Statler defeated Rick Sanders in 15:15 by pin fall with a Backdrop Backbreaker.

Match Rating D-

While tonight didn’t really showcase any real differences, talks backstage among the booking staff (while I make the decisions, I do seek input from Vessey and Rock Downpour and Ernie Turner) seem to think Statler has breakout potential. Hence why he gets the win tonight instead of Waldorf. Otherwise it’s a standard each side wins one to keep the feud even.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/FernHathaway.jpg

Its intermission time for the audience as Fern Hathaway comes out to entertain the fans with her usual antics with the air gun, shooting t-shirts to each side of the Ministry while amping up the fans and then posing for some pictures at ringside.

Rating C-

Fern gets a little more responsiveness from the crowd tonight as she exhibits more energy. Whether it’s her turning over a new leaf, or just trying to make an impression before her contract comes due, we will have to see. But she hasn’t had any issues since the first month and if she can get this much pop from the crowd it would make more sense to extend her rather than try and get some other pretty face over. Of course that also depends on how much she asks for and if she continues to not cause problems in the future. I acknowledge she has value, which is why she has been here so long, but the threshold for her is fairly low.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Up next Whistler looks to complete the triple crown of NYCW and win the one belt he has never held in NYCW, the Tri-State Championship.

Turner: I don’t see it happening tonight. I will admit that Whistler is one tough son of a gun, but I think he’s still going through a table tonight and Harper walks out the champion.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Whistler-1.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Andrew%20Harper_zpsml4eiofi.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_TriState_alt.jpg

Whistler VS Andrew Harper © in a one fall singles match for the Tri-State Championship title.

Not a lot of subtlety here as both big men like to throw punches and use high impact offense rather than try and wear an opponent down with holds or submissions. Andrew has youth, but Whistler has literally Harper’s lifetime of an edge in experience and a hunger to win the only belt he has never held in NYCW.

Harper uses every trick in his still limited arsenal, but he cannot keep the determined Whistler down. After ten minutes of the two men trading blows back and forth and seeing the indomitable spirit of Whistler refusing to lose, Harper decides to take a powder and gets out of the ring and heads to the back, ignoring the count by the referee. The referee counts 10 and Whistler wins the match, but not the belt.

Whistler defeated Andrew Harper in 12:40 by count out.

Match Rating E

If I had seen anything from Harper before this that indicated he was not just still a raw prospect, he probably would have gone over Whistler here even though Whistler is the more popular wrestler. In fact it would have been a sign that Harper had ‘made the grade’ so to speak. But tonight did nothing to change my mind as to his status so Whistler gets the win, but not the title. I’m not against Whistler getting the belt per se, although it would be more of nostalgia and transitional thing rather than an extended run, but I have other plans for the belt at the moment.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Harper takes the cowardly way out to retain the title.

Turner: More like the smart way out. As champion he doesn’t have to beat his opponent, his opponent has to beat him.

Rock: I still think it’s cowardly. Up next is two men who would never do something so dishonorable as Steve Flash teams with Bulldozer Brandon Smith to take on Black Hat Bailey and Honest Frank, who I can see using the same tactics as Harper.

Turner: I don’t know what you are talking about Rock. Bailey is one of the most honorable men I have ever met, and as for Frank, he is as honest as the day is long. Why do you think he’s called Honest Frank?

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SteveFlash-1_zps0c9a684e.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Bulldozer%20Brandon_alt1_zpspfyikndw.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/BlackHatBailey.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/HonestFrank.jpg

Steve Flash and Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Black Hat Bailey and Honest Frank in a one fall tag team match.

Flash controls the early match up but Frank and Bailey are past masters at getting the advantage by using shortcuts and isolate Flash from his partner. Quick tags and use of the five count by the heels keeps Flash from tagging in the overeager Bulldozer, who costs Flash a couple tag opportunities by being intercepted by the referee and ushered back to his corner when Bailey or Frank opportunistically caused the referee’s back to be turned and to not see the tag. Finally Smith gets a clean tag and like the bulldozer he is named for, cleans house in the ring. Bulldozer’s power gets the faces the advantage, but only briefly as Bailey uses the clichéd ‘poke in the eye’ to slow down the big man and then tags in Frank. Frank sends Bulldozer whipping off the ring ropes, but doesn’t see Flash make the tag and after dropping Bulldozer with a back body drop, stands up right into a Flash Bang! Smith tackles Bailey to prevent the save and the referee counts 3.

Steve Flash and Bulldozer Brandon Smith defeated Black Hat Bailey and Honest Frank in 13:04 when Steve Flash defeated Honest Frank by pin fall with a Flash Bang.

Match Rating D-

Given three of the four men in this match are well past their primes it was about as good as I could hope for. Bulldozer gets to learn from some of the best NYCW has had the last decade while also getting some rub from the win.

Rock: An impressive victory for the duo of Flash and Bulldozer. Wait, it looks like Cahill is coming to the ring! Flash and Bulldozer don’t see him!

Turner: Looks like Bulldozer is about to get his own message from the Man Mountain.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/ManMountainCahill.jpg

Cahill enters the ring right after Flash scores the pin and while Bulldozer is still on the outside with Bailey. A clubbing clothesline sends Flash crashing to the mat. Bulldozer sees Cahill in the ring, but is held by Bailey while Cahill picks up Flash and, staring straight at Smith, drops Flash with a vicious Mountain Topper! Smith breaks away from Bailey and charges into the ring, but Cahill slips out, damage having already been done. Cahill pulls out a microphone as he backs up the entranceway, staring at Bulldozer.

Cahill: Bulldozer, I told you not to get in my business but you didn’t listen, and just like with Cage, when you don’t do what the Man Mountain says, the people around you pay the price! That is the only warning you are going to get Smith. As for you Cage, you know what I want, and the longer it takes for you to give it to me, the more everyone around you is going to suffer! This time it was your tag partner from a couple months ago. Next time, maybe it’s a close friend or even family! Since you still haven’t come to the Man Mountain, the Man Mountain is coming for you!

Rating C

Effective segment, especially as it continues Cahill’s hunt for a rematch, while also including more involvement with Brandon Smith.

Rock: Cahill continues his path of destruction, but I don’t think the Bulldozer is going to just stay out of it.

Turner: Then Bulldozer better think of the people around him. I wonder how happy Flash is now to have teamed with him and Cage.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/CheerleaderNicki.jpg

Cheerleader Nicki comes down to the ring and dances around ringside, getting the fans to cheer for Roger Cage and handing out some Cage merchandise to younger fans around ringside.

Rating D

Nicki hasn’t been here as long as Fern and hasn’t developed the same level of fan support, although she still generates a decent pop and does her job of getting the crowd pumped some before his match.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RogerCage.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SammyTheShark.jpg

Roger Cage, flanked by Sammy the Shark, is backstage with a microphone.

Cage: Ota, tonight it doesn’t matter who you get to team with you because I have the man I trust most at my back tonight, the Great White Shark Sammy! And together Shark Cage is an unbeatable combo!

As for you Cahill, I will deal with you soon, I promise you! I am sick and tired of you attacking everyone else because you aren’t man enough to come after me directly! Sammy and I have Ota and his partner to deal with tonight, but you are next on my list Cahill!

Rating D

Average promo, nothing particularly bad or good about it. It serves its purpose to keep the storylines going.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RogerCage.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SammyTheShark.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/FumihiroOta.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Monty%20Trescarde_zpsueecob6e.jpg

Shark Cage VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness & Monty Trescarde in a one fall tag team match.

Back and forth action to start it off and Shark Cage with their superior teamwork control the early portion of the match. But Sammy gets isolated by the heels and worked over in their corner as a frustrated Cage paces in his corner, desperately wanting to tag in. Sammy finally breaks free and Cage comes in and cleans house. Some ninja tricks from Ota turn the tide though and after Cage has to tag out to Sammy again, Sammy falls victim to a Ninja Strike from Ota and gets pinned.

Ota, Warrior of Darkness and Monty Trescarde defeated Shark Cage in 18:17 when Ota, Warrior of Darkness defeated Sammy the Shark by pin fall with a Ninja Strike

Match Rating D-

And this is why I don’t put tag matches in the main event. Even though there were no obvious issues between either team, and everyone was giving a good effort with the crowd being into the action, the match itself didn’t really deliver like I would have expected, even with a couple midcarders in the match.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Ota has gained some momentum in his pursuit of Cage. But coming up now is our main event where our mystery challenger will go one on one with Man Mountain Cahill.

Turner: Whoever it is had better be one very tough individual if he wants to survive out there with the Man Mountain.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/PuertoRicanPower_alt1jt.jpg

The lights go out in the Ministry and a spotlight shines on the entrance way as the national anthem of Puerto Rico starts playing. Out from the entrance way, draped in the flag of his island nation, is a massive powerhouse of muscle, easily topping 300 lbs. and definitely someone the fans recognize. A national icon his home of Puerto Rico and known throughout North America, Puerto Rican Power enters the ring and grabs a microphone.

PRP: Last month I and my company joined the Confederation of the Territories Alliance and tonight I am here to see just how good the people in these other promotions are. So I have come here to New York, where so many of my fellow countrymen reside, to take on the biggest and baddest that NYCW has to offer, the Man Mountain, Cahill!

Rating D+

The surprise wrestler got as good a pop from the crowd as I hoped for. Also bringing in PRP will, I hope, generate more interest among the Latino community in coming to our shows, since we don’t feature any luchadores currently due to Vessey’s personal hiring preferences.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/PuertoRicanPower_alt1jt.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/ManMountainCahill.jpg

Puerto Rican Power VS Man Mountain Cahill in a one fall singles match.

Nothing technical here as its two big hosses duking it out with punches, forearm shots and power moves. They go toe to toe, each showing the capacity to absorb tremendous punishment as well as dish it out. After over 15 minutes of hard hitting, high impact brutality between the two 300lb’ers each is looking for the big move to finally finish off the other. PRP goes for his signature FOUR MOVES OF DOOM but Cahill is able to duck under the running clothesline and greets PRP off the ropes with his own finisher, the Mountain Topper front slam! Cahill covers quickly and gets the 3 count before PRP can raise his shoulder.

Man Mountain Cahill defeated Puerto Rican Power in 17:51 by pin fall with a Mountain Topper.

Match Rating D-

This was the risk I took with having Cahill in the main event. PRP is more than capable of holding his own in a match, but Cahill, even though he is working on improving still, is quite limited in terms of ring skill and PRP isn’t up to carrying the big lug to the level of main event match I want. But with Akima gone, my options were really limited in terms of main event matches. I was able to get PRP to come here on the agreement that we return the favor and have Cahill job to him on FCW’s next show, since Cahill has the name value to be someone worthy to be fed to PRP there but this match underscores just how limited we are right now in the main event in terms of talent. Basically we have Cage, Ota and Akima that can be counted on to deliver the level of matches I want for the main event, but Akima is gone for another 2 months after this and until we can reach the next level and get some more sponsors signed on, we don’t have the finances necessary to add more main event level talent to the permanent roster.

POST SHOW

The fan interactions after the show are continuing to be popular with the crowd, while simultaneously allowing the talent to better present their gimmicks and personas as well as feel more at ease interacting with the audience. SWF continually being ahead of TCW proves that talent will only get you so far. Being able to get the crowds to respond to you, whether positively or negatively, is what can really propel you to the top in the industry.

OVERALL SHOW D

While not quite as good as the previous three months ( mostly due to a weaker than normal main event) the show did still get a lot of positive feedback and came off as good enough to continue raising our popularity in the Tri-State area. But I am sure there is going to be some interesting comments from Vessey when we have our monthly review.

May 1st 2014

It was review time again, and I could just bet that Vessey would have a few choice words about the main event as I sat down in his office and awaited him looking up from the financial reports.

Vessey: Let’s talk about that main event David. That didn’t exactly come off very well did it?

Mack: That’s an understatement. I think PRP did a decent job, and he certainly got a nice pop on his introduction. But even with a decent build from his destroying people for 3 months, that was not a main event performance on the part of Cahill. Honestly, I am surprised you let Bailey put the Empire title on him, even if it was for only a few months.

Vessey: You’re the one that brought him in and gave him and his buddies the big main event push.

Mack: Yeah, but I pushed Hopkirk as the front, not Cahill. And I am not the one that signed him to a new contract with special perks and creative control.

Vessey: It was a sound decision at the time. After you left and most of the better known wrestlers moved on to bigger jobs, his was one of the few names that still had a lot of notoriety, and also a history from the East Coast Wars. And since the crowds had dropped down and we were back in the Ministry again, those ‘perks’ as you call them were necessary to get him to sign on with us. So deal with it. It’s your job to get the best use out of him, and that match definitely wasn’t it.

Mack: You’re right, I should have realized that a straight one on one with another guy like him ( albeit with more talent) wasn’t the best way to use him. That’s why I have been doing these attacks each month, because that does make him look really strong. But there still has to be the blowoff with Cage, although I think I have a way to do that, and still keep Cage and Ota feud simmering a little more.

Vessey: Well looking at the finances, we had a sellout again, but our profits were lower this month, barely clearing seventeen hundred dollars. Merchandise sales were down as well.

Mack: I kind of expected that, given how much we sold the last month, and that we still have most of the same people coming to each show. Also it’s tax season so people now have already spent their returns, or had to pay Uncle Sam. As Stomper once said, ‘Profit is better than no profit, especially if you want to keep your job!’

Vessey: Yes, Derek was very attached to making a profit. But for me, the profit is fine, but you are here to make us a bigger player in the wrestling business, and last month’s show, although receiving some good reviews, kind of dampened our momentum some. How do you propose to turn that around?

Mack: For starters, Cahill will be in the main event again, but this time it won’t be alone. I will put him in with Cage and Ota in a triple threat title match. That should give him enough protection in the match. Then I plan on a four way match for the Tri-State title and OSP and Ring Generals will face each other for the tag titles.

Vessey: Ok, sounds good. Get all the details to me and I will start getting the boys together to plan the matches. By the way, you know Fern’s contract is due at the end of the month?

Mack: Yes, as a matter of fact, I was going to contact her after our meeting to set up a time to discuss possible terms for extending her. She hasn’t caused any problems backstage since Rush Hour, and she’s been getting a good pop from the fans during her intermissions. As long as she’s willing to take something in the same neighborhood of her last contract, I don’t see a problem.

Vessey: Alright. Let me know if you come to an agreement with her and I will look it over. I think that’s all for now.

I got up and headed for the door, pulling out my cell phone on the way and finding myself vaguely surprised that I still had Fern’s number in my address book. It hadn’t changed from the time we were still dating five years ago, despite how badly that ended when I went to Mexico and left her in New York.

But I had to put those memories aside, both the good and the bad, and deal with her now in a calm, detached businesslike manner.

Surprisingly, the meeting with Fern went smoothly. Both of us kept it nice and professional and we came to an agreement on a 3 yr ppa deal for about 15% more than her previous contract. With no other contracts due to the end of the next month it was time to look around the rest of the wrestling world and see what interesting things happened in April 2014.

NEWS

  • EMLL have made their statement in the crowded Mexico lucha scene by rising to Regional level.
  • 25 yr old former MR Pittsburgh Justice Jolson enters the wrestling world. He’s the standard mold of huge bodybuilder, limited ring skill.
  • 18 yr old Booster Boy is the latest graduate of the ZEN Temple Dojo. He wrestles a Japanese junior style and seems to be a natural heel.
  • 19 yr old luchador style wrestler Chet Chavez graduates from CZCW’s Coastal Resort dojo and has been given a trial spot on their roster.
  • Lard Ass….I mean Land Mass, has retired from the sport at the age of 50. A stalwart of NYCW during my first two times here, he was an overweight, underskilled performer whose claim to fame was a short run in SWF as a midcard monster heel and a couple tag title runs, one in CGC in the 90’s and one in NYCW before my tenure. He was let go from NYCW during my last tenure here and had been bouncing around the indies ever since.
  • Former UCW Women’s champion Speedy Marie retires at the age of 38. She never found work with a name promotion following UCR’s folding in 2007 and had been competing in European indy matches.
  • Another former NYCW alumni (although slightly before my time there) Travis Century hangs up the boots at age 51. Had a short Tri-State title run before going to DAVE in the last few months before it closed down, then he headed to Japan and the hardcore nirvana that is WEXXV where he teamed with Larry Wood to win the tag titles once during his four years there.
  • OLLIE and MPWF legend Alfredo Menedez ( aka EL Barbaro) has officially left the business at age 74. Although he hadn’t been active on the scene for almost 30 years, there were always rumors of his returning to MPWF in some capacity till now.
  • Showing that even the lowest level wrestler in SWF gets more attention than a small company’s star performer, the trade magazines published an interview where opener Bear Bekowski bad mouths Brett Biggins, over how the latter apparently gets pushed more than he deserves.
  • ‘Big Time’ Randy Bumfhole is apparently making time now with Dawn the Cheerleader. Guess poor Zimmy is still stuck with only his reflection to keep him company.
  • Swedish model Vita, who manages Edd Stone in TCW, is now dating Elmo Benson outside it. Apparently she prefers a cackling hyena to beaver buzz among the ST 01 members.
  • GSW new couple Candii and Fro Sure are stepping out.
  • 28 yr old independent Scottish brawler Robert McAuliffe lived up to his nickname of ‘Meathead’ when he was involved in a bar fight and resisted arrest with the cops who were trying to break it up.
  • GSW resident job boy Devyn Retribution has started putting on the pounds and shot up from middle weight to light heavyweight.
  • GCG has a new PPV deal in Japan.
  • Now that he’s no longer active, Travis Century has opened his own dojo, called the Travis Century House. I’m not sure if that means he’s actually running it from his house or not.

SIGNINGS AND LEAVINGS

  • RIPW bring in Midnight Prowler, and former NYCW Tri-State Regional champion Dazzling Dave Diamond.
  • Hijo del Mephisto jumps ship from MPWF to SOTBPW. SOTBPW releases Lobo Blanco
  • GCG signs Roku Sotumora and Sojuro Sen from BCG.
  • BCG also releases Nanobu Murkami.
  • BHOTWG releases White Samurai.
  • SAISHO lets go Ogai Miki.
  • ZEN lets go of their first ever Zen Temple graduate Toady, who apparently hadn’t developed enough in his 3 years there.
  • Flash (aka Flash Savage)fails to impress during his stay in NOTBPW and is allowed to leave.

TITLE CHANGES

  • The Ivanoffs beat Absolutely Flawless to win the 21CW tag belts for a 4th time.
  • Sofu Ozawa beats Noritoshi Miura to win the BCG Challenger’s Series title. Miura managed to defend the title 18 times in 4 months.
  • With the departurs of Sotumura and Murkami the BCG tag titles are now vacant.
  • The Yoshifusa Maeda Grand Prix tournament is won by Razan Okamoto.
  • James Hernandez beats BB Colossus to win the IPW Championship belt.
  • Showing that Mitch Naess likes retreads, Johnny Martin wins the PSW title for the 3rd time by defeating Greg Black and ending his year long reign as champion.
  • Fujio Naharashi beats Hirokazu Yamanoue to win the SAISHO Destiny title.
  • With Ogai Miki’s release, the SAISHO tag titles are vacant again.
  • Frogue Element defeats Monday Next to win the RAW Quest title for a 3rd time.
  • My old boss Champion Creativo Controllo ( better known as Campeon JR) defeats Pirato Malvado to win the SOTBPW Campeon de Menor title for a 2nd time.
  • Ralph Grimm and Jamie Anderson beat Punisher Paul Hughes and Red Dragon to claim the UEW Tag titles.

Just in case you want to change the name to Travis Century's wrestling school I made a logo.

Your 2010 NYCW diary helped to create my NYCW events into my database and gave me a very pleasant read. This one, as I read, is certainly following the footsteps of the previous.

Keep up the work and the inspiration.

From the NYCW Website

Spring Showdown saw the war between Cage and Ota still continue as Ota won a tag match to keep the contests between them even. Meanwhile Man Mountain Cahill continued his path of destruction by first brutally assaulting Steve Flash and then beating renowned wrestler Puerto Rican Power in the main event. Now at Fights on Broadway, all three titles will be on the line, including a tremendous triple threat match for the Empire Championship.

So don't miss the best in Old School Wrestling, don't miss NYCW Fights on Broadway!

I do not normally play the 2014 DB so I have no idea if Roger heads to the SWF like he normally does in the 2013 DB. I am going under the assumption that he does and so that is why I am making this pick. Plus I picked the other two champions to retain.

It doesn´t look likely that Harper would keep that belt for long but I would still give him a successful defense this time.

Ring Generals © VS Old School Priniciples in a one fall tag match for the Tag Team titles.

Not really sure which team could be the next challengers (new signings/new team perhaps?) after these two are done but I go with title change here, mainly because I think one of the belts will change hands here and this looks most likely to me.

Roger Cage © VS Man Mountain Cahill VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness in a Triple Threat match for the Empire Championship

I could see Ota getting the belt here as his possible feuds with Flash, Akima and Smith look better on paper than anything I can think for Cage. However, I think the change will happen in 1 vs. 1 match and probably after Cahill´s situation have been dealt with as I still think that he will move to feud with Akima (or possibly Smith) soon and moving Cahill awayfrom title hunt before giving the belt to heel sounds like better idea on my mind since Cahill vs. another heel isn´t very likely to score well.

A four way? It's a recipe to move a title -- and 'Drew Harper has shown himself NOT to be championship material. Going with Trescarde here.

Ring Generals © VS Old School Priniciples in a one fall tag match for the Tag Team titles.

I guess I'll go with ALL the titles changing, with the "testing period" being last show... Ring Generals are deemed ready for split-up and singles push soon, while OSP get the last... um, hurrah? tag title reign.

Roger Cage © VS Man Mountain Cahill VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness in a Triple Threat match for the Empire Championship

I agree with the other guys logic -- but I think OTA is the better champion choice.

With Ol' Man Mountain Cahill getting.. old and stinking up the main event, part of me thinks that this show is the de-facto "season end" for you, hence old storylines and old titles change in a "must-win" scenario where you transfer to new, fresh feuds.

Alright, first time predicting in a Dragonmack diary. Been recently reading your '07 NYCW, and it was incredible. Anyways, I go with Harper here because I just can't see the strap on one of those guys, except for maybe Sammy. But even then, Harper has to be retaining here.

Tough one, but in my personal opinion, the OSP are out and the Ring Generals are the gems of your tag division.

One comment here; I see so much of David Mack in Roger Cage.

Harper's not really proved his worth as champ, and this is the kind of match where you can transition the title from a heel to a heel.

Ring Generals © VS Old School Priniciples in a one fall tag match for the Tag Team titles.

Ring Generals retain to end the feud (for now). No idea who will step up to the plate to be the next challengers- as these two teams pretty much seem to be THE entire tag division in NYCW. :p

Roger Cage © VS Man Mountain Cahill VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness in a Triple Threat match for the Empire Championship

Out of all three, Ota's going to put on the best matches for the Empire title at the top of the card, so I see him sneaking in and grabbing the win by pinning Cage for the title. I then see Ota defending the belt against someone fresh next month, with Cage downing the monster Cahill to effectively end the Man Mountain's Empire Championship aspirations.

Is this card actually only going to be three matches, or is there some 'filler' you didn't feel was worth predicting on ?

Thank you. glad you are enjoying my other work as well.

I can see some parallels as well, in that he's a younger guy whose risen up the ranks of NYCW over the years to become the solid main eventer.

Actually a far cry from where he started in the '07 database, where he was 10 yrs older, and had half the skill. Cage really got a big makeover in the '10 version.

NYCW FIGHTS ON BROADWAY

Saturday Week 2 May 2014

Held at the Ministry in Queens NY Att: 1000 (SOLD OUT)

PRE SHOW

With a number of multiman matches on the main card tonight, there are only a couple of training matches held, with nothing particularly noteworthy happening in either. The valet contest this time promotes Memorial Day as Fern, Nikki and Haley all sport US flag themed costumes. Nikki wins this month’s contest and poses for some pictures with some servicemen who came to the show.

MAIN SHOW

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RockDownpour_alt2.jpg

Rock Downpour: It’s truly Fights on Broadway tonight as all three titles are on the line. In fact, my partner is in the ring right now to make an announcement about the main event.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Ernie%20Turner_zpsofjuwwsc.jpg

Ernie Turner: The NYCW Championship committee, in order to bring a halt to the rampages of Man Mountain Cahill, and because he has yet to receive a re-match from when he lost the Empire title, have made tonight’s main event a Triple Threat match! Empire champion Roger Cage must defend the title not only against his originally scheduled opponent, Ota the Warrior of Darkness but now must also face Man Mountain Cahill.

Rating D-

This is how I get some resolution from all of Man Mountain’s attacks to get a title shot, while at the same time trying to avoid having another weak main event like last month. Cage and Ota have shown they can deliver; now I just hope they can protect Cahill enough to keep the main event at the same level.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Big news for the main event, but we kick things off with a four way battle for the Tri-State Empire Championship tonight. Can Andrew Harper hold off three other men to keep his title?

Turner: This is definitely not a match in the champion’s favor as he can lose the belt and not even be pinned. Personally I favor Trescarde in this match as his savvy business mind is used to profiting off a rapidly changing situation.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TennesseeWilliam_zpse109178a-1.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Monty%20Trescarde_zpsueecob6e.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SammyTheShark.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Andrew%20Harper_zpsml4eiofi.jpg

Tennessee Williams VS Monty Trescarde VS Sammy the Shark VS Andrew Harper© in a one fall match for the NYCW Tri-State Empire Championship.

With all four men in the ring, and no one wanting to let another get the pin fall the action is back and forth. Trescarde locks on Williams for a lot of the match and seems to be tacitly cooperating with Harper in that they don’t attack each other but neither do they let the other get the pin fall. After over 10 minutes of nonstop action, Sammy sends Harper flying through the ropes with a flying shoulder block, causing both to crash to the ring floor. Tennessee Williams looks to take down Monty Trescarde, but Trescarde is able to counter into his finisher Cash Bonus (Death Valley driver) and get the pin fall to win the belt.

Monty Trescarde defeated Tennessee William, Andrew Harper and Sammy the Shark in 12:44 when Monty Trescarde defeated Tennessee William by pin fall with a Cash Bonus. Monty Trescarde wins the NYCW Tri-State Regional title

Match Rating E+

All these guys are fairly young (28 or younger) and all have some greater or lesser potential to be players on the NYCW roster over the next several years. I went with Trescarde as the winner as I think another run with the title will benefit him (and us) more than the others. Harper clearly wasn’t ready to step up yet, though he is improving. Sammy has the skills but I have not really seen him apply them yet to do more than get by. Tennessee is another one with a good future chance to step up but Trescarde is the most ready of the four from what I have seen so far.

Rock: And just like that, we have a new Tri-State Champion as Monty Trescarde wins the title for a second time!

Turner: I told you that he was best suited to capitalize on the chaos of a four way match, Rock.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Coming up now the veteran team of Black Hat Bailey and Honest Frank will compete in tag action with the young pairing of Animal Harker and Geoff Borne.

Turner: Harker is an idiot for trying to challenge Bailey again and Borne can’t be much brighter if he is teaming up with that southern fried moron.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/AnimalHarker-1_zps66a00a10.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Geoff%20Borne_zpsiqt71hmm.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/BlackHatBailey.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/HonestFrank.jpg

Animal Harker & Geoff Borne VS Black Hat Bailey and Honest Frank in a one fall tag team match.

Animal and Borne try valiantly against the veteran heels, but any attempt at offense is quickly snuffed by a shortcut from Bailey or Frank, who are masters at using every underhanded tactic in the book and a few that aren’t. Frank puts the match away after around 6 minutes of action with a Frank N Hurter on Borne for the pin.

Black Hat Bailey and Honest Frank defeated Animal Harker and Geoff Borne in 6:03 when Honest Frank defeated Geoff Borne by pin fall with a Frank-N-Hurter.

Match Rating E

This would have been a pre-show training match candidate, but with the multi-man title matches, I had time on the main show I needed to fill. This was pretty much an extended squash to keep Bailey and Frank looking strong.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/FernHathaway.jpg

Fern Hathaway comes out for the first intermission with her standard shooting t-shirts and trying to energize the crowd act. Although Fern tries hard, the crowd isn’t as lively as usual.

Rating D

I think this is less a function of the response Fern gets as it is the crowd wasn’t as energized from the first couple matches as usual. Not too surprising as this show is centered more on the title matches and the main event and isn’t as stacked top to bottom as usual.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: We have another tag match coming up as Bulldozer Brandon Smith teams up with Whistler to take on the Boys from the Yukon.

Turner: This is a dangerous match for Smith and Whistler, who have only teamed together once before and that was in a loss. Individually they may be superior to the Yukon Boys, but as a former tag champion I can say nothing beats having a partner you work with day in and day out.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Bulldozer%20Brandon_alt1_zpspfyikndw.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Whistler-1.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Howlin%20Mad%20Mort_zpsmcom9maj.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Whitehorse%20Whittaker_zpsy5s2fxku.jpg

Bulldozer Brandon Smith & Whistler vs The Boys from the Yukon in a one fall tag team match.

Big bodies throwing big punches and going for high impact offense is the story of this match. Whitaker and Mort are able to use their teamwork to keep the match competitive but Whistler’s far greater experience and Bulldozer’s athleticism allow them to maintain the offensive, finally ending it around ten minutes in when Bulldozer plants Mad Mort with an inverted piledriver.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Whistler defeated The Boys From The Yukon in 10:05 when Bulldozer Brandon Smith defeated Howlin' Mad Mort by pin fall with an Inverted Piledriver.

Match Rating E+

This is another match that was moved from training time to the main show to fill in the time, and it was ok but so far this night hasn’t offered anything to elevate us yet. I am counting heavily on the second half of the night to lift us up.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Now former Empire champion Steve Flash takes on the skin care obsessive Dermot O’Logical.

Turner: Don’t let his fascination with silky smooth skin fool you. Underneath that moisturizing cream is a tough individual who will beat you if you underestimate him.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SteveFlash-1_zps0c9a684e.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Dermot%20OLogical_zpsz9qe9wyo.jpg

Steve Flash VS Dermot O’Logical in a one fall match.

Dermot refuses Flash’s offer of a handshake, claiming he had just put lotion on his hands to keep them moisturized. O’Logical goes through his pre-match ritual of putting on latex gloves to protect his hands before locking up with Flash. Dermot manages to get in some early offense with some brawling and kicks to Flash’s stomach while locking up. But Flash turns things around and ends the match after a few minutes with his patented Flash Bang.

Steve Flash defeated Dermot O'Logical in 7:41 by pin fall with a Flash Bang

Match Rating D

That was finally a good match to start getting the crowd more interested. While it was par for the course for Flash, a good showing by Dermot, even in losing shows he might be able to break out of the lower card eventually.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Now it’s time for our second title match of the night as the Ring Generals defend against their archrivals OSP.

Turner: These two teams have battled for years for the belts and this latest showdown is just as intense. Each team has one win over the other in recent months, and even their singles matches last month were split. While I think OSP’s greater overall experience will be a difference maker, it’s too close to call.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/DeanWaldorf.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/MarvStatler.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RickSanders-1.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TheMaskedMauler.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Tag.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Tag.jpg

The Ring Generals© VS Old School Principles in a one fall tag match for the NYCW Tag Team titles.

The match starts off as usual fairly even as these teams know each other so well. Statler is the one isolated by OSP this time and worked over in the corner but eventually he breaks free and gets the tag to Waldorf. Dean clears the ring, but inadvertently knocks the referee down as well. Sanders takes advantage by handing Mauler some brass knucks and Mauler uses them to knock Dean out. Mauler tosses the knucks outside where Sanders hides them and then Sanders tackles Statler and both go outside the ring as Mauler locks in a perfunctory Iron Claw. The referee recovers, see’s Waldorf down on the mat with the Iron Claw locked in. He raises Waldorf’s arm three times and after the third time it hit the match, calls for the bell.

Old School Principals defeated The Ring Generals in 14:57 when The Masked Mauler defeated Dean Waldorf by submission with an Iron Claw after blatantly cheating. Old School Principals win the NYCW Tag Team titles.

Match Rating D+

Good title match as OSP is now even with the Ring Generals and Wiley Coyote for most tag title reigns at four. Waldorf and Statler had held the titles for over a year now and it was time for someone else to hold the straps. I am not going to break up the Ring Generals team, at least not at this time, but I will probably give them some singles opportunities to see if either one distinguishes themselves.

Rock: Although they had to use underhanded means to do it, OSP are the tag champions once again.

Turner: It doesn’t matter how you win Rock, only that you win. Ring Generals can cry all they want but they are going home without the belts tonight.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/CheerleaderNicki.jpg

Cheerleader Nikki now comes out for the next intermission and goes around ringside passing out some Roger Cage merchandise, and chatting and posing with the fans for pictures.

Rating D+

With the crowd more energized after the tag title match and Nikki’s presence signaling the main event coming soon, she gets a nice response from the crowd.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RogerCage.jpg

Roger Cage comes on the monitor with some pre-recorded comments.

Cage: Tonight, the odds are once again stacked against me. But that’s ok, because when you live as large as I do, having all the finest things in life, you have to be prepared to pay the high price for it. Cahill, I told you I would deal with you soon enough and soon is now tonight! As for you Ota, Roger Cage shines way too brightly to ever be overcome by the darkness. I may have a rough road tonight, but by the end it will be smooth sailing as always for you present and future, Empire Champion Roger Cage!

Rating D+

Standard pre match hype from Cage, getting a nice reaction from the fans.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Here it is the highly anticipated main event. Roger Cage puts his belt on the line against not one, but two men tonight. Can he overcome the odds to remain champion?

Turner: I don’t really see how Rock. He could lose the belt and not even be pinned. Add that to having to take on the Man Mountain of destruction, Cahill and the Warrior of Darkness, Ota at the same time and the odds look insurmountable. I think we end up with a new Empire Champion tonight, but whether its Cahill or Ota is a coin toss.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RogerCage.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/ManMountainCahill.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/FumihiroOta.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Empire.jpg

Roger Cage© VS Man Mountain Cahill VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness in a triple threat match for the NYCW Empire Championship.

Ota and Cahill form a temporary alliance as each takes turns softening up Cage. However, that alliance only lasts till Ota goes for a cover. Cahill drags Ota off Cage and then covers Cage himself. Ota drags Cahill off and they get in each other’s face until Cage blasts both of them with a dropkick! Ota and Cage come to a tacit agreement that Cahill is the greatest danger to both of them and stereo side kicks knock Cahill out of the match for a bit as he goes crashing through the ropes and to the floor. Cage and Ota then exchange moves, and a couple near falls, but neither can keep the other down. Cahill comes storming back in, flattening both Cage and Ota with vicious clotheslines. He goes for a Mountain Topper on Cage, but eats a vicious Ninja Strike from Ota, staggering him. Ota delivers another Ninja Strike and puts the big man down, but before he can cover him, Cage tosses Ota out of the ring. Cahill is slowly stirring but Cage nails the Cage Rage and covers for the 1, 2 and 3!

Roger Cage defeated Man Mountain Cahill and Ota, Warrior of Darkness in 28:09 when Roger Cage defeated Man Mountain Cahill by pin fall with a Cage Rage. Roger Cage makes defense number 2 of his NYCW Empire title.

Match Rating C-

And the main event delivers just like I hoped. With Cage and Ota able to carry most of the action, Cahill was allowed to look strong during his spots even though he eventually took the loss. And with Cahill being the one pinned, now we can still do the blow off match for Cage and Ota.

An exhausted Cage is celebrating his win by going around the corners of the ring and raising the title high while he basks in the cheers of the fans. However, he doesn’t see Cahill get back up, with a murderous expression on his face after losing again. Cahill yanks Cage off the ring corner and slams him to the mat. Cahill delivers a couple of stomps and then goes to pick up Cage for a Mountain Topper, when suddenly out of the back, Bulldozer Brandon Smith comes running down the entrance way, slides into the ring and drops Cahill with a running shoulder block! Bulldozer delivers another shoulder block as Cahill tries to get up. Cahill immediately rolls out of the ring and away from Bulldozer, who stands defiantly in the middle of the ring, with his fists raised, yelling at Cahill to come take him on. Cahill, without the advantage, wisely decides to head back up the ramp, but his angry look show this is not over.

Rating D

Here is where I transition off of Cahill chasing Cage and now putting him in a program with Bulldozer. How it turns out should be an indicator of whether Bulldozer is ready to step up to the main event level or not.

POST SHOW

Fan interaction time as usual with the three tables set up around the ring and the fans gathering at each one to talk with and get autographs from their favorite wrestlers. Brandon Smith in particular seems to be enjoying the attention as he seems more at ease and more able to engage with the fans.

OVERALL SHOW D+

While the first half of the show was really weak, the tag titles and main event did enough to make it another excellent show, according to the reviews over the next couple days. We sold out again and are getting our momentum back as we push to reach the next level where I could really start expanding our options.

It was with a satisfied feeling that I walked into Larry Vessey’s office this month as I had gotten an extremely good piece of news. As I sat down, I noticed he had the tew.com website up.

Mack: So you’ve heard the news?

Vessey: Yes, we are classified as a Regional promotion and we have moved up almost 10 spots in the ranking of promotions worldwide. Quite a nice accomplishment and in less than six months too. You should be deservedly proud.

Mack: I assume you managed to parley that greater ranking into increased sponsorship money?

Vessey: You assume correctly. That, along with the numbers you sent over amount to a $15k profit for the month.

Mack: Excellent, that means we can bring in a couple of people to bolster our main event.

Vessey: A couple is fine, but don’t go hog wild. We have a large roster right now as it is.

Mack: Don’t worry, I only have 2 or 3 names in mind. Besides, one of these days Whistler and Bailey may actually decide to retire and I would rather have people in place than have to find someone then.

Vessey: Alright, now that we have achieved the goal, what are your plans to keep our momentum going?

Mack: Build off the storyline with Bulldozer and Cahill, and have the finale between Cage and Ota, probably in a special type match. Also, depending on who gets back to me, have a couple new faces debut at the show. Beyond that, I have a couple things in mind for Gang Wars.

Vessey: Alright. Get me the details and lets see if we can continue to build off of the momentum.

I left the office, still feeling on cloud nice. From my previous stints here, I knew this is when things really can start to take off. Up to now, I had been working with a limited main event level roster and not bringing in the funds to add any big names. Added to Akima being gone for four months on the BHOTWG tour and it had really stifled things creatively. I had been able to lay the seeds for a couple things, and Cage and Ota had provided a main event level feud but getting to Regional was only the beginning of making NYCW relevant in the wrestling industry. While being part of the C.O.T.T and adding FCW to that group had removed a couple of roadblocks from the past, we still had PSW to contend with and the talent base on the independent scene wasn’t what it had been a couple years ago. SWF and TCW hadn’t cut anyone loose ( well not anyone that would actually consider signing with us) and Akima and Ota had been the best of who was available when I came back here in January. But I did have a couple names in mind that had worked for me before. One was a solid worker who had been in TCW, even though he hadn’t gotten past opening matches in several years, and the other was someone who was still an unknown as to what he could bring. He had gotten severely injured in a match while working for PSW as well as us ( another of the reasons why I don’t like Mitch Naess) and that had put him on the shelf for a good 18 months right before I was going to give him a solid main event push. Now he was two years older ( but still on the right side of 40) and he and the other guy were still the best of what was working the indy scenes right now. Besides, I kind of felt I owed him the chance to show if he could deliver. So with that I grabbed the phone, dialed his number and said “ Hey Jack, what you think about coming back to NYCW?”
