The David Mack Chronicles: NYCW 2014- The Changing of the Guard

NYCW RUMBLE IN THE BRONX

Ring Generals VS Old School Principles

Best challengers get a non-title win to build to a title match.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Monty Trescarde

BBS rarely gets picked up by bigger companies (at least compared to Cage) and should be treated as one of your biggest young stars. He shouldn't being losing to Trescarde this early.

Roger Cage & Steve Flash VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness and Honest Frank

Ota needs to win on debut to not look weak (unless DQ victory, but I doubt it)

Akima vs Hollywood Brett Starr

The rise of Akima continues here. Starr's good, but Akima is much better./I]

Always enjoy the David Mack Chronicles. Glad to see you back up and running again.

Ring Generals VS Old School Principles

Non-Title usually would mean that the Old Schoolers would win. However, I am going for a victory from the Ring Generals.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Monty Trescarde

The Bulldozer rolls through Trescarde.

Roger Cage & Steve Flash VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness and Honest Frank

A tough match. However, Ota picks up a big victory here.

Akima VS Hollywood Brett Starr

Akima gets the victory. IMO, he is the better of the two wrestlers.

NYCW RUMBLE IN THE BRONX

Ring Generals VS Old School Principles

Setting up next months title match...

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Monty Trescarde

I think of Monty as the C-Verse version of Mike Rotunda, and he isn't at Bulldozers level yet

Roger Cage & Steve Flash VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness and Honest Frank

Ota took the last win, so I see Cage getting some payback by pinning Frank

Akima vs Hollywood Brett Starr

Akima vs Cage looks to be in the cards, so Akima continues the momentum here

Ring Generals VS Old School Principles

I think this will be non-title win for the challengers in order to set-up a title match later.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Monty Trescarde

I do like Monty but Smith is just better and I would assume he´s slighly higher on pecking order as well.

Roger Cage & Steve Flash VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness and Honest Frank

Could go either way and with Ota winning via DQ in last month it might be Cage´s turn. However, since I expect Cage to win the next singles match (that will likely happen in near future), I go with Ota getting another win over Cage here.

Akima vs Hollywood Brett Starr

Don´t see much reason for Akima to lose here since Starr is likely just on one-shot deal.

NYCW RUMBLE IN THE BRONX

Saturday week 2 February 2014

Held at the Ministry in Queens Att: 1000 (SOLD OUT)

PRE SHOW

Our usual series of short training matches followed by a Valentine’s Day valet beauty contest which is won by Fern. Although the matches were short, both the trainers and trainees were putting effort into the matches and not just going by the numbers. Even that fat tub of lard Devastating Don showed some new wrinkles in his wrestling, before gasping for air by the finish. Some of these matches could have gone on the main show with no problem, which is encouraging, especially if and when we hit that next level and may begin running longer or more events.

MAIN SHOW

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RockDownpour_alt2.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Ernie%20Turner_zpsofjuwwsc.jpg

Rock Downpour: It was a shocking and surprising show at RUSH HOUR, with unexpected returns and a surprise title change. Change is definitely in the air here at NYCW as witness tonight’s main event, where fresh off his stunning victory in last month’s MAW Rip Chord Invitational, Hollywood Brett Starr has come to NYCW to challenge the first ever KONY winner Akima to a one on one match to see who is the better wrestler among tournament winners.

Ernie Turner: While I don’t like those MAW outsiders, I wouldn’t bet against the grandson of Mickey Starr and someone who has trained with the legendary Sam Keith. I think Akima has bit off more than he can chew accepting this challenge.

Rock: That remains to be seen Ernie. But tonight we start things off with a battle of current and former multi-time tag champions as current title holders the Ring Generals face their rivals The Old School Principles.

Turner: These two teams have traded the belts several times in the past and Sanders and Mauler would like nothing better than securing another title shot. My money is on the veterans pulling out all the stops to get another chance at the belts.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/DeanWaldorf.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/MarvStatler.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RickSanders-1.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TheMaskedMauler.jpg

The Ring Generals VS Old School Principles in a one fall non-title tag team match.

An amped crowd eagerly awaits this contest. These two teams have been the backbone of the tag division in NYCW for the last four years, holding the belts a combined seven times between them.

Very familiar with each other’s styles and moves the match goes back and forth for several minutes as neither team can get a lasting advantage. After 10 minutes, Statler gets isolated by the veteran heels and is worked over in their corner. Sanders and Mauler switch out frequently to stay fresh while Waldorf impatiently paces his corner, desperately wanting to make the tag. Waldorf breaks up a couple of pin attempts, but Statler still cannot make the tag until he ducks under a clothesline from Mauler. Waldorf tags in and quickly takes down Mauler and Sanders with quick suplexes and hip tosses. Waldorf looks to have things in control until Sanders sneaks in a low blow while the referee is trying to get Mauler back in his corner. Waldorf is slow to recover from the blow and Sanders and Mauler work the young man over. Now it’s Statler’s turn to wait impatiently for the tag, although he hasn’t fully recovered from his working over earlier. Waldorf makes the desperation tag and Statler cleans house. But a desperate move by Sanders turns the momentum again as he pulls Statler neck first onto the top rope while Sanders drops off the ring apron. This gives the break needed for Mauler to slam Statler and then lock in his dreaded Iron Claw in the middle of the ring. Waldorf tries to save his partner but is cut off by Sanders and Statler has to tap out.

Old School Principals defeated The Ring Generals in 17:57 when The Masked Mauler defeated Marv Statler by submission with an Iron Claw.

Match Rating D

Good opening match for the main show and a solid renewing of an old rivalry. OSP make their case as the #1 contenders with a hard fought victory over the champions.

Rock: OSP has beaten the Ring Generals. That will definitely shoot them to the top of the contenders list for the next shot at the tag titles.

Turner: The Ring Generals were lucky the belts weren’t on the line tonight. They won’t be as lucky the next time they face OSP.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/BlackHatBailey.jpg

Black Hat Bailey comes down to the ring and grabs a microphone.

Bailey: Some people here seem to think that old Black Hat’s time has passed. They say ‘Bailey, you’re too old. You don’t have what it takes anymore.’ Well let me tell you this. I may not be as quick as I used to be, but like a fine wine, I only become better with age. If anyone in the back doubts I still have what it takes to whip the butt of any of the wrestlers here half my age, I challenge you to come on down and try and prove me wrong!

Rating E+

As Larry Vessey rightly pointed out last month, Bailey doesn’t have the stamina anymore to compete in the longer matches. But he is still one of our bigger stars and his name still has value so he deserves a place on the main show. Challenge matches like this against some of our younger and less experienced talent is a way for him to maintain his aura of toughness, but not expose him like the match with Akima did.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Black Hat has issued an open challenge to the rest of the locker room and it looks like someone is taking him up on it. Wait, it’s Animal Harker, with his ribs still taped up from the assault by Cahill last month!

Turner: I always said that moron didn’t have a brain in his head. A smart man would be hesitant to get in the ring with Bailey even at 100% and Harker is far less than that after that vicious beating by the Man Mountain last month.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/AnimalHarker-1_zps66a00a10.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/BlackHatBailey.jpg

Animal Harker VS Black Hat Bailey in a one fall singles match.

A game Animal tries to make a fight of it by using his powerful fists to brawl against Bailey, but the wily veteran is too skilled and too experienced to be off balance for long. A cheap shot to Harker’s bruised ribs gives Bailey the breathing room he needs to take control, and soon he begins isolating and working over Animal’s left arm. Bailey continues to put damage on the arm with arm wringers and dropping knees and elbows on it to weaken it further, obviously trying to set up for his patented Bailey Breaker arm bar finisher. Harker battles back gamely to turn the tide, but it’s obvious he’s still feeling the effects from the attack last month and Bailey reverses Animal’s momentum with kicks to the stomach and shots to the ribs. Finally Bailey feels he has the arm weakened enough and locks in the Bailey Breaker. Animal struggles valiantly to reach the ropes, but the pain is too much and the young man submits.

Black Hat Bailey defeated Animal Harker in 8:09 by submission with a Bailey Breaker.

Match Rating E+

Not exactly a clinic in wrestling. Bailey’s skills are eroding significantly and he’d probably have retired or been released anywhere other than NYCW while Animal is still developing his limited skills as well. But good enough for its purpose and by no means was it a bad match.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/FernHathaway.jpg

Once again a short intermission between the matches as the winner of the valet beauty contest tonight, Fern Hathaway, comes down to the ring and entertains the crowd by shooting out some t-shirts with an air gun and posing for some pictures with some fans ringside.

Rating D+

And that is why Fern still has a job here after almost 7 years. She is pretty, and the fans like her. They don’t have to deal with the backstage behavior that pisses off the rest of us and while her value on the card still outweighs the negatives, I don’t really have a reason to fire her or let her go… yet. But she only has 3 months remaining on her current contract so we will see how she behaves before then.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Poor Harker once again is on the wrong end of a beat down. But now we head towards tag team action as fan favorite Whistler partner’s up with Animal’s Southern Star’s tag team partner Tennessee Williams and they take on the team of new Tri-State champion Andrew Harper and the counter culture punk New York Doll.

Turner: Whistler should have been put out to pasture long ago and if Williams is not careful, he may end up like his partner Animal beat down and tossed through a table courtesy of the Tri-State Champion.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Whistler-1.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TennesseeWilliam_zpse109178a-1.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Andrew%20Harper_zpsml4eiofi.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Spike_zpsrmhh1we1.jpg

Whistler and Tennessee Williams VS Andrew Harper and New York Doll in a one fall tag team match.

Neither team had paired together before and it’s clear fairly quickly that Harper and NYD are not on the same page at all. Whistler and Williams, both having been tag champions before, are far better able to work together than the selfish pair of Harper and NYD who continually look out for themselves. This leads to the heels not being able to take a solid control on the match and eventually sets up NYD to eat a Rebel Yell running clothesline after around ten minutes of action and that leads to the pin fall for Whistler.

Whistler and Tennessee William defeated Andrew Harper and The New York Doll in 10:23 when Whistler defeated The New York Doll by pin fall with a Rebel Yell.

Match Rating E+

Quite honestly this was a match that probably should have been one of our pre show training ones. Another purpose of those matches is to have some random pairings and then see if there are any indications of whether it might make a good tag team or not. That’s pretty much how Old School Principles got its start. Sanders and Mauler were randomly paired together in a tag match and something just clicked. But between Harper and NYD it was the exact opposite. They really did not mesh well together. But with Whistler still being a very popular wrestler, even though he’s well past his prime (the story of most of the NYCW main event) and Harper having just won the Tri-State title, fan interest dictates they be on the main show. However, just like Bailey’s match before, it wasn’t a bad match, it just didn’t raise the bar any either.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: The patriotic Whistler salutes the crowd and heads back up the entrance way waving Old Glory after a successful win along with his partner tonight, the up and coming Tennessee Williams. Not an auspicious start for the new Tri-State champion, even if he wasn’t the one that got pinned. But coming up we have a look at the possible future of NYCW as former Tri-State Regional champions Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Wall Street broker turned wrestler Monty Trescarde meet in the ring.

Turner: It’s a battle of brute power vs intelligence and cunning and these two men are both entering their primes, and trying to make their case either for another shot at the Tri-State title or to prove they are ready to step up to the next level .

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Bulldozer%20Brandon_alt1_zpspfyikndw.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Monty%20Trescarde_zpsueecob6e.jpg

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Monty Trescarde in a one fall match.

Both men start cautiously, feeling out their opponent. A battle of power early on easily goes in the Bulldozer’s favor as he forces down Trescarde when they lock up and then challenges Trescarde to try and knock him down. Trescarde runs into a brick wall with his first couple of shoulder tackles off the ropes but the cunning businessman seizes the advantage with a kick to the gut on Bulldozer. The advantage doesn’t last long as the brute power of Smith allows him to get back to his feet. The contest continues like this back and forth, with Trescarde’s smart use of counters and willingness to resort to underhanded tactics breaking Bulldozer’s momentum. But Bulldozer’s power advantage and use of punishing slams and quick suplexes prevent Trescarde maintaining any lasting edge either. Both attempt several unsuccessful pin falls, and after 15 minutes of back and forth action, the bell sounds as the time limit of the match is reached.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith drew with Monty Trescarde in 15:00 when the time limit expired.

Match Rating D

Bulldozer is the more complete product right now, and probably the one closest to breaking into the main event. Conversely, that also makes him one of the most likely to be snatched up by a larger promotion if they need to fill a hole or decide to expand their operations. Monty still needs to improve and show he can sustain the solid build up from his title run last year, but he’s also the most polished of the people that Vessey has brought in during the last couple years, and a solid feud with Smith can help establish him as well as elevate Bulldozer. That’s one of the main challenges with talent at our level. You build a potential star, only to likely lose him to a bigger promotion, so you always have to have another one building behind them.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/CheerleaderNicki.jpg

After that exciting match, we have another short intermission as Cheerleader Nicki makes her way out to the ring, handing out some t-shirts and posters to lucky fans at ringside and generally entertaining the fans for a few minutes before she cheers on her client Roger Cage.

Rating D+

Nicki also doing what she does best, which is give the fans a little entertainment and a short breather before either the main event or last couple matches. Also since she usually comes out before Cage has a match, it serves to energize the crowd a little since they know the current headliner of NYCW will be in the next match.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Now the Empire Champion Roger Cage teams up with NYCW icon Steve Flash to take on the Warrior of Darkness and longtime rival of Flash, Honest Frank.

Turner: Ota couldn’t have found a better partner than Honest Frank to neutralize Flash. The Honest one has beaten Flash more times than anyone else in NYCW.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RogerCage.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SteveFlash-1_zps0c9a684e.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/FumihiroOta.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/HonestFrank.jpg

Roger Cage& Steve Flash VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness & Honest Frank in a one fall tag team match.

Flash and Frank start things off. The two old veterans and longtime enemies know each other’s moves as well as their own and it’s a succession of brawling moves from Frank countered by Flash’s technical skills which are then escaped by use of Frank’s greater power advantage. Ota and Cage then step in and the action picks up as Cage tries to gain control via quick strikes and impact forearm shots while Ota mixes in submission holds and rope maneuvers to keep the Champion off balance. After several exchanges, Flash is isolated by the heel s and worn down in their corner as they prevent Flash making the tag to the fresh Cage. Cage rallies the fans to the support of Flash, who almost makes the tag several times but is cut off by either Frank or Ota, who tag frequently to remain fresh and take advantage of the 5 count to double-team Frank. Over 15 minutes into the match, Flash finally breaks free, hot tagging to Cage, who clears the ring. Ota and Frank try and corral the champion, but Flash clotheslines Ota, taking them both over the top rope and out of the ring, while Cage slips out of a Frank N Hurter attempt and counters with his own finisher, the Cage Rage. Cage covers Frank for the pin and gets the victory for his team.

Roger Cage and Steve Flash defeated Ota, Warrior of Darkness and Honest Frank in 17:50 when Roger Cage defeated Honest Frank by pin fall with a Cage Rage.

Match Rating D

Okay match that advances the feud between Cage and Ota with Cage picking up a win, but not pinning Ota. But again Frank seemed to not have his best game in the match and although the crowd was into the match, I feel it didn’t really deliver as well as it could have. It was a solid effort but when you want to make it to the next level, you need more than just a solid effort from 4 of your biggest stars.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Cage gets a small measure of revenge but won’t be satisfied till he can get his hands on Ota one on one. Now coming up in the main event we have a special challenge match. Fresh off his stunning victory last month at the Rip Chord Invitational Tournament, MAW’s Mid Atlantic Champion Hollywood Brett Starr has come to NYCW and thrown the gauntlet down against the first ever King of New York tournament winner Akima!

Turner: I admit I’m a bit torn here Rock. On one hand, I admire the moxie of Starr is making this challenge and you can’t deny his pedigree as the grandson of Hall of Immortal Mickey Starr and trained by another Hall of Immortal, the legendary Sam Keith. And being Mid Atlantic Champion as well as a Rip Chord Invitational winner shows the level of skill he has even though he is only 23 yrs. old. But this is NYCW and like it or not, it’s my home and Starr is an invader. I find myself having to root for Akima even though I think he spends too much time catering to the fans.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/AkimaBrave_zpsc96ea7c4.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Hollywood%20Bret%20Starr_zpstwfhz0iw.jpg

Akima vs Hollywood Brett Starr in a one fall singles match.

Starr struts around the ring, brandishing both his Mid Atlantic title and his trophy from the Rip Chord Invitational in Akima’s face, who just smiles and waits in his corner for the match to begin.

Starr wastes no time in trying to embarrass Akima as he goes for a quick pin. Akima easily gets out of it though. Next Starr tries to prove his superior mat wrestling skills but Akima is able to match him. Finally Starr challenges Akima to a lock up but then kicks Akima in the gut. Starr goes for high impact shots with elbows, forearm shots and knee drops to try and wear down the athletic islander, using some ‘questionable’ tactics to short circuit Akima’s attempts to reverse the momentum. The match goes back and forth for well over 20 minutes as Starr continues to wear down Akima and prevent the gutsy Samoan from turning the tide. Akima, with the support of the crowd, rallies back into the fight and head butts Starr, giving him the opening he needs to go on the offensive. A series of thrust chops and side kicks take some of the fight out of Starr and now with both men weakened, each tries to land the big move to end things. Starr tries for a Starr Maker but Akima manages to counter and hits the Samoan Suplex. He quickly covers Starr and gets the 1…2…3!

Akima Brave defeated Hollywood Bret Starr in 30:14 by pin fall with a Samoan Suplex.

Match Rating C-

Excellent Main Event. Starr still has to polish some skills but given he is only 23 years old, he’s already well ahead of some of the talent that’s been here for several years. While I am not looking to expand our roster at the moment, I’d have to put Starr on a short list of people to look at bringing in for the future if we do need someone who can slot into the upper part of our card and transition to main event with a little work. However, given his skillset and charisma, he’s also a natural to get scouted by someone like SWF or CGC as well.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: An impressive win by Akima over a challenging Brett Starr. Wait, someone is coming to the ring. It’s Man Mountain Cahill!! Starr is still down in the ring and Akima is exhausted after that long match!

Turner: It looks as if Cahill is about to deliver another message.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/ManMountainCahill.jpg

Man Mountain Cahill comes down to the ring and enters the ropes. Although worn down from the grueling match, Akima valiantly tries to stand against Cahill but eats a vicious clothesline. Not stopping there, Cahill picks up Akima and then slams him to the mat with a Mountain Topper! Cahill then tosses Akima through the ropes and to the floor outside the ring. He then picks up the still groggy Brett Starr and delivers another Mountain Topper to the MAW champion! Cahill then tosses Starr out of the ring as well and demands a microphone from the ring announcer.

Cahill: Cage, I told you last month if I didn’t get you in the ring for that title, I was going to murderize some more bums! What happened here is on your head Cage! The longer you and the championship committee deny me that shot at the title you stole from me, the more bodies are going to be stacked up here till there’s no one left but you and me! If you don’t come to the Man Mountain, Cage, the Man Mountain will come to you!

Rating D

Continuing another sideline story, with Cahill’s random destructions trying to get a rematch with Cage. He delivers his message after this match because there is one unchangeable rule that Stomper had in NYCW. No one ever leaves NYCW standing. Even the Stomper was put down with a Cycle Driver by Vessey when he took over control of NYCW after Stomper decided to retire. Although it was more of a ceremonial thing than an actual match.

Starr was a one shot deal this time to have a headlining main event with Cage and Ota in a tag match, but Akima gets the same treatment as well since he decided to accept a tour with BHOTWG for the next four months, which will make him unavailable to us for that time. So , the attack by Cahill not only keeps with long standing NYCW tradition, it also gives an excuse as to why Akima isn’t around for the next few cards.

POST SHOW

Once again we have three tables set up around ring side where the fans can line up to get autographs and pictures with our main stars and some of the midcarders who we feel can benefit from learning how to interact with the fans and improve their ability to get their personas across to the audience. Judging by the lines at each table, the fans really enjoy this part of the evening almost as much as the main show.

OVERALL SHOW D+

Thanks to a strong main event and another overall solid show, RUMBLE IN THE BRONX was once again highly rated by the various wrestling sites reviewing it. There were minor criticisms that Akima and Starr were featured more than the Empire Champion and his main rivals but that was pretty much a special thing and only because Cage and Ota were doing a tag match and I find that ending the night on a tag match has less impact than a singles match. Its fine for TV, but it’s very rare that a tag match ends a PPV, unless it’s something like the tag tournaments that NOTBPW and MAW have once a year.

Monday March 1st 2014

Once again I headed down to the NYCW offices to meet with my boss Larry Vessey to do a monthly review, both professional and financial. While we had worked together for some time when he first joined NYCW first wrestling then working as a road agent, this was a whole new dynamic with him being the owner and me being the booker. He had to get used to my style of booking as a whole and in turn, I had to get used to his way of doing business as an owner, which was different in a lot of ways from how the Stomper ran things. Stomper’s main concern was money and profitability. He also didn’t like working with other promotions outside of MAW but in other matters such as tweaking our product or organizing the show formats he pretty much let me have carte blanche to adjust as I saw fit.

Vessey on the other hand, while still concerned about money, wasn’t as tight fisted as Stomper was ( no one WAS as tightfisted as Stomper!) and had willingly joined the Confederation of the Territories meaning he would loan out workers to the other promotions as well as allow other promotion workers to come to us. In fact, we had lent Steve Flash to a 4C show a week before our own event. But when it came to the format of how we ran the matches and what was expected in terms of our product, he was rigid as iron. It was his way, and only his way and I wasn’t allowed to modify our style at all. But I had managed to find some success in much different settings, from the more entertainment story driven CGC to the hardcore lucha MHW. I could handle old school, even if I couldn’t modernize it a little like I did when Stomper was still the owner.

With these thoughts drifting through my head, I entered Vessey’s office and sat down to begin our meeting.

Mack: So how is Cam doing?

Vessey: Good. Made his PPV debut this month with NOBTPW and got a win over another former MAW graduate Flash Savage.

Mack: I’ll have to check out the match. Cam always did well when he was here doing the Hot Shots bit, but NOTBPW is a far cry from that gimmick.

Vessey: Yes it is, and speaking of MAW, it was a risk having Akima and that kid Starr as the headline match at Rumble in the Bronx. Also not having any of the titles defended on the show. Fortunately according to the reviews it paid off.

Mack: I agree it was a risk, but it was the only matchup I felt could deliver at that level. While just in name value the Cage –Ota tag match could have headlined, I always felt that the last match of an event should be a singles match. I know you were part of one of the greatest tag teams of all time with your brother but we both know the singles is just a little more prestigious. As for no titles being defended, that’s just how the storylines played out.

Vessey: Either way, it paid off. We got a sold out arena, and we are starting to build momentum. Also, even with the extra expense of Starr’s appearance fee, it looks like we made a nice profit.

Mack: Yeah, about $4300 mostly due to more merchandise sold and a couple extra small sponsors now willing to advertise at our shows. While those things can fluctuate it was nice to maintain our momentum and put a little extra in the business expense accts.

Vessey: No problems backstage at the show? Fern behaving herself?

Mack: Yep, everything went off smoothly. There weren’t any issues with Fern this month, and even though everyone has told me that Devastating Don has a bad attitude, I haven’t had any problems with him. He hasn’t even complained about being stuck in training matches while we try and improve his cardio to work more than 5 minutes without gassing out.

Vessey: Ok, as to the show itself, while I wasn’t a fan of centering the main event around two people that aren’t going to be here the next show we did get a lot of positive feedback on the show so now the question is how are you going to keep the momentum going?

Mack: To be fair, I didn’t know at the time I booked the match that Akima was going to be gone the next four months on tour with BHOTWG, though given a lot of his family wrestles in Japan, I figured it would happen eventually. That’s why I had Ota as the opponent for Cage instead of Akima, even though Akima had more recently been in the spotlight. But his absence is only temporary unless one of the companies there offers him a written deal. He’s got a four year contract with us. As for Starr, we can bring him back for appearances sporadically. Heck, as gifted as he is, if we were making some more money or needed to fill a spot on our roster, I wouldn’t mind bringing him onto our roster. MAW generally doesn’t schedule on the same weeks we do so he could work both shows. But we don’t need him now and besides, as talented as he is, I can see Tommy or Eisen, or even Sam Strong or Alex DeColt signing him up the next time they feel the need to shuffle or expand their roster.

As for March into Manhattan, we will have all the titles defended with Cage and Ota headlining. How that event comes out should be a good indicator of how well the feud is drawing fan interest.

Vessey: Alright, one last thing before we wrap it up. I saw you petitioned to have FCW join the C.O.T.T. While I see no problem with it is there some reason you wanted them to join?

Mack: First, because they have a similar style to ours, although with more lucha influence so they are another body of wrestlers to draw from for worker trades and loans. Second and probably most important though, is that in the past FCW have been a competitor for sponsorship money and a de facto competitor when on the Regional scene. More Puerto Ricans live in the US than live on the island and a huge percentage of that group resides in the Tri-State area. With them part of the C.O.T.T alliance, we don’t have to directly compete against them and remove them as an obstacle when we get to that level. That leaves only PSW and possibly RIPW as competition we have to worry about and I feel confident we can compete with them when the time comes. But I always found it hard to go head to head with the massive popularity PRP has with the Puerto Rican community. To us, he’s a solid Regional star who would compare to someone like Ota. But there he’s on the level of Sam Strong or Christian Faith in terms of popularity and that popularity carries their shows whenever he’s in the main event.

Vessey: Okay, that makes sense. None of the other owners had a problem with it either, and Puerto Rican Power was also amenable to the idea so we will bring FCW into the Confederation of the Territories. Sam is getting the paperwork ready to send to PRP. That’s all I had for now. Get the show lineup to me so we can start prepping the guys for the next show.

There are many different ways that people can break into the business. Several retired wrestlers have their own training camps or private dojos where everyday joe who suddenly decides he wants to enter the world of wrestling can go and get lessons. 1 out of 20 may actually survive the entire camp and of that 1 out of 100 may actually get past low level indies. Then you have more formal schools that run their own indy shows and use their students as the wrestlers. They have a little higher success rate, but also a higher drop out rate as it is grueling. Above that, you have schools or dojos actually ran by established promotions. Almost every promotion regional or higher has their own private dojo, complete with veteran instructors, and they will churn out a half dozen or so decent wrestlers a year. Then there are those that are either proteges of established wrestlers, ala Wolf Hawkins and Tommy Cornell, or have family in the business and get introduced that way, like our own Larry Vessey’s son Cameron and his former tag partner Casey Valentine, nephew of Peter. While their careers don’t always match the levels of their parents, they generally are more polished at the start and make bigger splashes, such as Sam Keith’s and Rip Chord’s sons.

As a booker, along with gathering the news in the industry and what is going on with the various promotions, I also keep an eye out on the graduates of these various schools and on the indy bookings as rosters get filled from the bottom as well as the top. While you may sign that bigger name star to put at the top of your card, at our level you can only afford to have a handful of people like that and for long term sustainability, its always beneficial to grow your own talent as well. Trescarde, Harper and the Boys from the Yukon being more recent examples of people brought in not to be stars now, but to potentially be stars in the future and as they either pan out or not, its always good to have some names on hand to fill the pipeline when there are openings in the roster. So with those things in mind, here was the summary of events in wrestling for February 2014

NEWS

  • USPW’s attempts to compete with TCW and SWF on an even playing field have fallen a little short as industry rankings have downgraded Strong’s promotion to ‘Cult’ level again. This will impact the amount of money they can get from sponsors as well as hinder them getting the better and larger TV and PPV deals.
  • Extremo Modern Lucha Libre(EMLL) very briefly claim to be on a ‘Regional’ level, but the extremely competitive market in Mexico is too much for the new promotion and they quickly fall back to ‘Small’ ranking.
  • SWF’s International expansion proves to be unsustainable in the current downturn of the wrestling industry and a still stagnant economy and they are reclassified as ‘National’ again.
  • Icelandic business tycoon Magnus Ivansson is rumored to be looking at investing in a wrestling promotion, either an already established one, or a potential start up promotion perhaps in Finland, who have a large community of wrestling fans.
  • Xavi Ferrara, the 19 yr old protégé of Thom ‘Guide’ Barrowman, enters the business and the entertaining middleweight is signed onto the RIPW roster by Professor Nero.
  • White Wasp, a 19 yr old Australian who uses a luchador style complete with custom mask enters the industry. While his ring look consisting of said mask, white hair and a flowing white cape are striking, his actual skills are said not to be nearly as impressive. He will probably have to polish his skills on the lower level indy circuit before having an opportunity to hook up with an established promotion.
  • ZEN temple dojo graduate Dustin Down, a 22 yr old brawling New Zealander, gets signed onto ZEN’s main roster after finishing training.
  • Katoh Freak, sporting a strange look of half shaven head and facial tattoos, emerges from the WLW Project Arkham school and gets a spot on the main roster. His wrestling isn’t nearly as flashy as his appearance however.
  • PSW champion Greg Black has had some unkind things to say about fellow PSW’er Ash Campbell, claiming that Ash was not dedicated to the sport and coasting on his father’s laurels.
  • RAW midcarder Heath Murdock had high praise for referee Tony Thorpe, saying he was one of his best friends in the business.
  • Troy Tornado injured his arm in a TV match against Rocky Golden and will be out for about a month with what was diagnosed as a Reverberating Bicep injury.
  • Former SCCW champion and headliner Jesse Christian has decided to return to the industry after an 11 yr sabbatical following the closure of SCCW in 2003. Although 44 years old , he might still have some value , especially to a regional promotion in the South East where he built his popularity.
  • As part of their failed venture to achieve International scope, SWF had signed a PPV deal with Selecion Mexico to broadcast their events south of the border.
  • The oldest promotion in Mexico, the Regional level OLLIE, have signed a deal with Canal Tres television to debut a new weekly tv show called OLLIE Accion Viva.
  • GCG have brought back their Stars of the Golden Canvas tv show on All Japan TV
  • FCW has joined the Confederation of the Territories Alliance.

SIGNINGS AND LEAVINGS

  • Joffy Laine, after walking out on FCW last month, joins the RIPW roster this month.
  • BHOTWG calls up Reijiro Hiraki from development to the main roster, and invite Mikey James, American Elemental, Greg Black, Akima , Greg Gauge, Matthew Keith, KC Glenn, Oleg Doroskov and Frankie Perez on for their current tour.
  • PGHW recalls Avalanche Takano, Torch Nakizawa and Haranobu Kobayashi to the roster from development
  • Mainstream Hernandez is signed by IPW to replace some star power lost last month when GSW signed away most of their main event.
  • Manager Ernest Forthdyke Hume, after being released from MAW, catching on with RIPW
  • ZEN has released 2012 Temple dojo graduate Azazel.
  • 19 yr old Blue Phantom has left MPWF despite getting a decent push.

TITLE CHANGES

  • Raku Makuda and Tomoka Nagatsuke defeat Otsune Tsumura and Kiko Sakakibara to will the 5 Star Tag titles for a 3rd time.
  • Toshinobu Taka turns out to be a transitional champion as he is beaten in his first defense by Jonosuke Fukuzawa , who wins the BCG World title for the first time.
  • Thrill Seeker becomes a double champion in CGC, not only defeating Warren Technique to win the CGC Canadian title, but also teaming up with Joey Poison to dethrone the Dirty White Boys for tag titles as well. It’s the 4th tag reign for Thrill Seeker ( aka Lee Rivera, who had 3 reigns with former partner Shane Nelson as Youth Energy)
  • The Comedian ends Dumfrey Pinn’s 16 month reign as DIW Champion to capture the belt he has traded back and forth with Pinn the last few years for a fourth time.
  • New tag team Demolition Crew consisting of Milton Hittlespitz and Blaze Maximum defeat The Barracudas ( Chopper Rourke and Blitz Simpson) for the DIW Tag titles.
  • Sweet and Sour ( Kirk Jameson and Sensational Singh) regain the FCW Tag team titles from the 937lb Express ( Ox Mastodon and King Kong Kennedy) to win the belts for a second time.
  • With the callups, both the tag titles and Dragon Warrior titles of Hinote Dojo become vacant. Amane Shunsen wins the Dragon Warrior title while the pairing of Omezo Shitikei and Masakazu Kaima take the tag titles.
  • The Saisho tag titles are vacated when Torch Nakizawa is called up to BHOTWG. This also vacates the SAISHO Ride the Tiger title that he had just won from his tag partner kinji Akamatsu.
  • Blood Raven, El Sucio and Pharoah King end the 10 month reign of Cannonball Kid, Velocidad and UltraSpark Jr to capture the SOTBPW Campeones de Trios titles.
  • Hardcore warrior Chris Caulfield defeats Andre Jones to win the USPW National title.

Man Mountain Cahill is still on a rampage and his brutal attack has put Akima out of action for the next few months. Can anyone put a halt to his rampage while Empire Champion Roger Cage is still occupied fighting off the challenge of the Warrior of Darkness Ota? Also former 3 time tag champions Old School Principles have vaulted to the #1 contenders slot after scoring a victory over the champion Ring Generals. These feuds will come to a head at the next NYCW Event, March Into Manhattan!

The NYCW fans sure like those long plodding matches :p

Anyway good to see you're doing another one of these, always enjoyed your previous editions of the David Mack Chronicles.

Ring Generals © VS Old School Principles for the NYCW Tag team championship

OAP's won the non title match, that usually means they'll lose the re-match when the belts are actually on the line.

Sammy The Shark VS Andrew Harper © for the NYCW Tri-State Regional Championship

Even though Vessey wasn't too high on you giving Harper the Tri-State belt, I think you're going to give him a little more time to prove himself as the midcard champion.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith & Whistler VS Monty Trescard & Man Mountain Cahill

Cahill's getting a push right now, with his pissed off at everyone until he gets a rematch for his title gimmick. Wouldn't surprise me if he even attacked his own tag partner after the match.

Steve Flash VS Honest Frank

Two men that are part of the NYCW furniture. Had this been TEW 2010 I would have gone with Flash but at this stage of the game, though no spring chicken himself Frank has more upside.

Roger Cage © VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness for the NYCW Empire Championship - No Contest

I see this getting stretched out further. Match ends in a no contest when Man Mountain Douchebag comes down to the ring and attacks both men.

Ring Generals © VS Old School Principles for the NYCW Tag team championship

1. This match is at the show's start, and championship change at the start of the show is sort of a trope. 2. The ring generals have secretly become really, really good while you were absent, and you've already stated you're looking for stars. 3. And "stars" don't hold main event straps, so this match will mark the end of the Ring Generals and the beginning of "Marvelous" Marv Statler.

Sammy The Shark VS Andrew Harper © for the NYCW Tri-State Regional Championship

It's... just too early for Harper to drop a title. Shark is better, sure, bu the first defense should be clean.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith & Whistler VS Monty Trescard & Man Mountain Cahill

The left side is just more over... and I'm shocked Whistler has not retired yet, but he will soon enough.

Steve Flash VS Honest Frank

This is a straight toss-up... you seem to have a soft spot for Frank, so I think he'll score a win here.

Roger Cage © VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness for the NYCW Empire Championship

Having read several of your previous attempts, (and I'm impressed, in fact,I want to go back and read CGC and/or MHW) and the lose-draw-win pattern is a trope -- however, I can't really decide who will go over here, we'll have to wait to see who is poached.

Ring Generals © VS Old School Principles for the NYCW Tag team championship

Could go either way and that means I will usually pick champs to retain which is the case here as well.

Sammy The Shark VS Andrew Harper © for the NYCW Tri-State Regional Championship

Would love to see Sammy getting the belt but I doubt Harper would drop it this quick

Bulldozer Brandon Smith & Whistler VS Monty Trescard & Man Mountain Cahill

I´m guessing that Cahill will get the title shot he´s hunting soon (since I would assume that there will be a program between Akima and Cahill once Akima comes back) so keeping him strong seems the mostlikely outcome on this one.

Steve Flash VS Honest Frank

Could go either way but with Frank being off his game lately, I would give this one to Flash.

Roger Cage © VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness for the NYCW Empire Championship

I agree with Tigerkinney on this one and say that it´s a draw because of Cahill´s interference

NYCW MARCH INTO MANHATTAN

Saturday Week 2 March 2014

Held at the Ministry in Queens Att: 910

PRE SHOW

A handful of training matches before the show, mostly with the veterans doing some double duty putting the guys who didn’t make the main show through the paces to see if they can pick up some new pointers. We are the only wrestling work for most of these guys right now so they aren’t progressing very fast. ‘Devastating Don’ is still gassing out before 8 minutes and Vessey says that we should give him shorter matches, which is funny coming from the man who wants at least 10 minute matches on the main show. Cheerleader Nicki wins this month in our monthly valet contest, this one with Easter bunny ears on the girls.

MAIN SHOW

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RockDownpour_alt2.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Ernie%20Turner_zpsofjuwwsc.jpg

Rock Downpour: Last month, OSP defeated the tag champions the Ring Generals in a non-title match, and this month they get a shot at the belts. The Ring Generals have held the titles for ten months.

Ernie Turner: An impressive run, but they may not hold them any longer after tonight. Old School Principles are no stranger to those belts, having won them 3 times before but they haven’t had them for a couple years now, and are highly motivated.

Rock: It’s definitely going to be an exciting night as all three titles will be on the line, beginning first with The Ring Generals defending the belts against the wily veterans OSP.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/DeanWaldorf.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/MarvStatler.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RickSanders-1.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TheMaskedMauler.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Tag.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Tag.jpg

The Ring Generals © VS Old School Principles in a one fall tag team match for the NYCW Tag Team titles.

Both teams start things off slowly, neither wanting to be the first to overextend. After some technical exchanges between Statler and Sanders, Waldorf tags in but gets isolated by the heels. Waldorf tries getting the tag to Statler, but is continually prevented by OSP, who use standard tactics of quick tags and double-teaming during the 5 count. Waldorf finally makes the tag and Statler clears house. Mauler uses some cheating tactics to break Statler’s momentum and Haley Buck jumps on the ring apron, yelling to the referee about Mauler’s use of a low blow. Sanders pushes Haley off the ring apron, causing Waldorf to get in the ring. Sanders makes a tag and while the referee is busy getting Waldorf back into his corner, Haley jumps back on the ring apron, and paintbrushes Sanders across the jaw with her handbag. The referee doesn’t see the action and Statler capitalizes by picking him up high and then dropping him across his knee in his patented Backdrop Backbreaker. Statler covers while Waldorf prevents Mauler from breaking up the pin as the referee counts three.

The Ring Generals defeated Old School Principals in 15:56 when Marv Statler defeated Rick Sanders by pin fall with a Backdrop Backbreaker after Haley Buck interfered. The Ring Generals make defense number 6 of their NYCW Tag Team titles.

Match Rating D

Solid match from two very solid teams to start the show off. Although The Ring Generals are an honorable tag team, they aren’t above fighting fire with fire when pushed, especially Haley. Also the finish allows the Ring Generals to even things up, but still leave a reason for OSP to get another chance at the belts with the questionable finish. While I could also have gone with a time limit draw I had various reasons for not doing that here, even though in terms of booking style, its actually fairly standard old school booking with the heels winning the first encounter, then a draw, then either a couple of singles matches or 6 man tags, then a blow off match. It’s a fairly standard way to extend a feud over 6 months without having the same exact match show after show, which would lose the interest of even our old school loving fans. It’s somewhat predictable, but it works.

Rock: The champions Ring Generals retain the belts after a hard fought match.

Turner: OSP were robbed! You and I both saw Haley interfere in that match! Without her involvement, I bet we are looking at new champions, and you can bet that OSP are going to have a case for another title shot when the championship committee sees this.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: You may be right Ernie. Up next Black Hat Bailey has once again issued an open challenge to anyone in the back to come out and face him and prove they are tougher than he is.

Turner: It’s a fools bet, but they say a sucker is born every minute, and tonight’s sucker is the local boy Geoff Borne.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Geoff%20Borne_zpsiqt71hmm.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/BlackHatBailey.jpg

Geoff Borne VS Black Hat Bailey in a one fall match.

Borne is game, even though he gives up a lot of size to Bailey. Borne tries to use his quickness to keep Black Hat off balance, but his efforts only anger the veteran who quickly stifles Borne’s momentum with a nasty shoulder block and then grounds the young man and begins methodically working over the left arm of Borne. After a couple of minutes of weakening the appendage with knee drops and wrenching the arm, Bailey goes for the finish with his Bailey Breaker arm bar and the youngster taps out.

Black Hat Bailey defeated Geoff Borne in 6:09 by submission with a Bailey Breaker.

Match Rating E

Good for what it was an extended squash. But even though Borne did a really good job in selling Bailey’s offense and meshing very well with the older man, it’s a clear sign that Bailey is really fading rapidly and probably should be considering hanging it up. But he has the ear of Vessey, just like he did Stomper, and a ton of respect from the locker room, so no one is going to force him to go before he’s ready to do it on his own. Even I can’t say ‘Hey Bailey, it’s time’ given the fact that he has stepped aside for me on the book three times now without ever complaining once or trying to undermine me. He’s earned the right to decide when he’s done.

Rock: The veteran Bailey is still tough as nails.

Turner: That he is Rock, that he is, as the rookie Borne just found out.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/FernHathaway.jpg

A short intermission as popular valet Fern Hathaway comes down and does her usual routine of entertaining the fans and amping the crowd by firing off t-shirts from her air gun and posing for some pictures with the ring side fans.

Rating D+

So far, Fern has been behaving herself. There hasn’t been any issues backstage, and although she still doesn’t speak to me unless its business (like her contract due in a couple months) if there is relative peace backstage, it’s all I can ask for. I can take her being annoyed with me, since that was status quo for the 2 years we dated when I first came to NYCW.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Tri-State champion Andrew Harper faces a tough test in his first defense of the title as he takes on former Tri-State champion Sammy the Shark.

Turner: We all know Sammy rode the coattails of Roger Cage to get the belt then. If he was so good then why hasn’t he been able to win it back in four years? My money is the Shark getting put through a table tonight.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SammyTheShark.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Andrew%20Harper_zpsml4eiofi.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_TriState_alt.jpg

Sammy the Shark VS Andrew Harper © in a one fall match for the NYCW Tri-State Regional title.

Harper sets up a table at ringside, as per his usual routine, and Sammy eyes it warily before locking up with the champion. Sammy gives up quite a bit of size and power to the big Harper and has to rely on his elusiveness and the few years more ring experience he has on the champion to try and take control of the match. Harper has a hard time corralling the slippery Sammy, but easily powers out of the Sharks pin fall attempts. The match goes back and forth with neither one able to get a clear advantage. Sammy finally strings together a few moves and has the champ reeling when he connects with a running dropkick. But the blow knocks Harper into the referee, sending him out of the ring onto the floor. Shark connects with the Ace in the Hole, and covers Harper, but the referee is not there to make the count. Sammy hangs through the ropes, helping the referee to his feet but as he turns back into the ring, he is met with a kick from Harper right to the man jewels! The referee doesn’t see it as he is still trying to get back in the ring. Harper makes a token body slam and then covers Sammy as the referee finally makes it inside the ring and starts counting one, two…three. Harper has retained the title.

Andrew Harper defeated Sammy the Shark in 16:13 by pin fall by using underhanded tactics. Andrew Harper makes defense number 1 of his NYCW Tri-State Regional title.

Match Rating E+

While it was not bad, it also did nothing to impress me with Harper as champion. But I admit part of that was my fault. I gave them a little over 15 minutes and that was probably a little more than either of them was really in condition to do at this point as both were obviously starting to tire out from what I could see.

Rock: Harper holds onto his title, although I don’t approve of his methods to keep it.

Turner: Only thing the books will record is a victory, not how he got it. Look, Harper is getting the table ready at ringside and it looks like Sammy is about to take a ride.

Rock: This is uncalled for; Sammy has already taken enough punishment. Wait, someone is coming out from the back. Oh my god, it’s Cahill!

Turner: Guess it’s time for another message to be sent.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/ManMountainCahill.jpg

After the match is over, and Harper is preparing for his usual putting his opponent through a table, he is interrupted by Cahill stolidly marching to the ring. Harper, obviously feeling discretion is the better part of valor, quickly exits the ring and avoids the Man Mountain. Sammy however, is still feeling the effects of Harper’s low blow and is unable to exit the ring as Cahill enters. Cahill quickly clubs Sammy back to the mat with a vicious clothesline, then picks him up and slams him down hard. Then, seeing the table already set up ringside, he picks up Sammy, slings him over his shoulder, and makes his way to the ring curtain, where he then drops Sammy through the table with a Mountain Topper! Sammy is left lying in the wreckage while Cahill grabs a microphone and then climbs back in the ring.

Cahill: Cage, apparently my message wasn’t clear enough last month! Here you are having a title match tonight, only I am not in it! How many more people do I have to destroy before you get the balls to face me Cage!? Tonight it was your tag team partner, next time who knows? Eventually I will find someone you care enough about to finally face me! Since you won’t come to the Man Mountain Cage, the Man Mountain is going to come to you!

Rating C-

Cahill is definitely getting some heat from his rampages each week in pursuit of a rematch. This is an excellent example of the value someone like Cahill brings to a promotion in that he can generate a lot of interest and heat in a storyline and feud even without being in a match.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith comes down and right before his scheduled tag match gets in right in the face of Cahill and grabs the microphone.

Bulldozer: You know Cahill, I am getting really tired of you coming out here every month and attacking people just because you haven’t gotten a rematch yet. Back where I come from we call people like you a bully, and there’s only one way to deal with bullies and that is head on!

Cahill looks like he is about to go after Bulldozer, but Smith is no small man himself and is ready. Cahill backs off out of the ring and awaits his tag partner for the match coming up.

Rating D-

Setting up some storyline elements with the confrontation and setting the stage for Smith to start getting involved with people in the main event level as he is probably the closest to being able to step up if necessary if Cage gets poached, or Flash decides to retire, or if Akima keeps going to Japan all the time.

Rock: That was an intense confrontation between the two big men, and it’s not over yet as the Bulldozer teams with the icon Whistler to take on Cahill and the savvy stockbroker Monty Trescarde.

Turner: Bulldozer isn’t very smart in getting in the way of Cahill’s quest to get the title back. The trail of battered bodies alone should be a clue to not piss off the Man Mountain.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith & Whistler VS Monty Trescarde & Man Mountain Cahill in a one fall tag team match.

Bulldozer is eager to lock up with Cahill, but the Man Mountain lets Trescarde start the match, only coming in after Whistler is tagged in and then using his power to wear down the patriotic brawler. Whistler gets isolated by Cahill and Trescarde with Trescarde doing most of the work in the ring, and Cahill coming in to deliver some high impact offense before tagging out again. Whistler valiantly tries to make the tag time and again, but is prevented for several minutes. He finally battles his way out of the corner and tags in a ready Bulldozer who cleans house and clotheslines Trescarde over the top rope and then delivers 3 straight running shoulder tackles to knock Cahill through the ropes. Trescarde gains control back by grabbing the neck of Bulldozer and slinging it off the top rope. He and Cahill then begin working over Smith in their corner. Smith breaks free, and makes a tag to a game but still worn down Whistler who sends Trescarde flying with running clotheslines. Whistler then Irish Whips Trescarde setting up the Rebel Yell but Cahill makes the tag as Trescarde bounces off the ropes and greets Whistler with a big boot to the face. He then turns around and nails Bulldozer with a big meat hook right cross, knocking Smith to the ring floor. Cahill then finishes off Whistler with a Mountain Topper and covers him for the pin.

Monty Trescarde and Man Mountain Cahill defeated Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Whistler in 16:08 when Man Mountain Cahill defeated Whistler by pin fall with a Mountain Topper.

Match Rating E+

No obvious problems in the match I could see. The crowd was into it, the action was decent for the match, no one seemed off or had a problem working with their partner but the match seemed to underperform given who was in it. Not a bad match really, no one disappointed, but not a match I’d want to have right before a main event or starting a show off.

Rock: Clearly it’s not over between Bulldozer and Cahill, but Cahill wins round one, even if it was by proxy.

Turner: Whistler just served as another example to Smith why you don’t piss off the Man Mountain.

Rock: Next we have a renewal of one of the oldest rivalries in NYCW as former 3 times Empire Champions Steve Flash and Honest Frank face each other once again.

Turner: There is no love lost between these two as each has traded the belt back and forth several times.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SteveFlash-1_zps0c9a684e.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/HonestFrank.jpg

Steve Flash VS Honest Frank in a one fall match.

There are probably no two men in NYCW who know each other as well or have fought each other as often as Flash and Frank. Each has the others moves well scouted and each is able to quickly counter any offense from the other. It’s back and forth the entire time with neither one able to maintain a lasting advantage and each waiting for the other to make that one mistake the other can capitalize on. That mistake finally comes when Frank goes for the Frank N Hurter a little too early and Flash is able to slip out and counter into a Flash Bang to put down Frank for the pin fall.

Steve Flash defeated Honest Frank in 16:30 by pin fall with a Flash Bang

Match Rating D

Both are definitely past their primes of a few years ago when Flash was still a serious title threat, and Frank was the backbone of the Total Control faction of Hannah Potter and simultaneously competing in both PSW and NYCW main events. But while neither one is really a headliner anymore, they can still deliver a solid match, especially against each other as this is truly the old school action that makes NYCW what it is to its hardcore fans.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RogerCage.jpg

Empire Champion Roger Cage comes down to the ring before his title defense, microphone in hand.

Cage: You know wearing this belt comes with a price. It’s a price I am willing to pay in order to enjoy the finer things in life that I so richly deserve but now others are paying the price for me and that doesn’t sit well with me. Cahill, despite what your tiny mind may think, I am not ducking you. I will deal with you in due time. But, I was speaking of the price of being the Empire Champion and that price is having a bull’s-eye on your back 24\7. It’s being a marked man for every person who wants what you have which is the respect, the adulation and the power of being the NYCW Empire Champion. So, before I can get to Cahill, I have to deal with another challenger who has stepped out of the darkness to try and take away this belt, and that is Ota. Ota, I know it will not be easy, but I will beat you and keep this title, then I will deal with Cahill and anyone else who comes my way after him. I will do this because I am a man that enjoys the extravagant lifestyle I lead and I will do whatever I have to in this ring to keep that lifestyle because I deserve it and I have earned it and no one is going to take it from me!

Rock: This is it, the showdown between Roger Cage and the Warrior of Darkness Ota. Will we have a new NYCW champion tonight?

Turner: Maybe so Rock, maybe so. While I enjoy the nice things like Cage does, I also enjoy seeing a pretty boy like him get his butt handed to him and Ota is fully capable of doing that and leaving with the belt. I bought a nightlight just in case the Reign of Darkness begins tonight.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Empire.jpg

Roger Cage© VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness in a one fall match for the NYCW Empire Championship

Cage is cautious starting the match as he is still getting used to the varied style of Ota, only having had a couple matches against him so far. Ota on the other hand, wastes no time in going after the champion, using a combination of mat wrestling and rope maneuvers interspersed with occasional ‘ninja tactics’ and keeps the Champion off balance but is unable to get more than a 2 count on several pin fall attempts.

Match continues back and forth with Ota never quite able to put Cage away and Cage’s momentum getting blunted by Ota’s clever use of ‘ninja tactics’. After over 25 minutes, the action takes to the outside of the ring and the referee is knocked down and is out of it for a couple minutes. Time long enough for Ota to grab a chair from near the announce table and start swinging at Cage. Cage ducks and gets his own chair and both men start using the chairs as weapons, trying to brain the other one and narrowly missing. The referee has recovered by now and slides out of the ring, getting between the two men and trying to get the action back in the ring, but after being shoved away by first Ota, and then by Cage as each continues going after the other outside, the referee finally calls for the bell, declaring it a no contest.

Roger Cage drew with Ota, Warrior of Darkness in 29:49 when the referee lost control and stopped the match.

Match Rating D+

A good main event, if not quite as good as the last two months. The lack of a solid finish to the match probably knocked it down a bit but still it was a solid finish to the night. Also, since I knew I was going to have a draw here to extend this feud a while longer is why I didn’t have a draw in the tag match to start the show. Two title match draws in one night is a little too much. Now that we are three months in the main storylines are starting to take shape, but from past experience my last two times in this position, it’s usually around six months to nine months before we build up enough momentum and fan support to reach that next tier and that’s the point things can really take off. Back in 2007 it led to a feud between me and Acid to kick off our entry as a Regional level promotion and in 2010 it was Cahill and his cohorts in the Main Attraction followed by Hannah Potter’s Total Control stable that signaled we were no longer the ‘small’ niche old school promotion. What it would be this time I still had no idea. There were a couple names I was keeping an eye on which we couldn’t really afford now, but might be able to bring in when we hit that next level but a lot can change in a few months in this business.

Post-Match

Usual 3 table fan interaction segment, although following along with Vessey’s recommendation I featured mostly our top level stars but I did have a couple of people at each table who I thought could benefit from learning how to work their gimmicks and build a rapport with the audience so as to be in a better overall position to push them in the future. Unlike the SWF or TCW, we can’t count on our stars being here for years (at least not the ones still reasonably in their primes that we would WANT to be here for years.)

OVERALL SHOW D+

For the third straight month we had a highly rated show from all the industry site reviews and although tonight wasn’t a sellout it was still over 90% full. Next month would show if this was a blip or a trend as far as attendance numbers.

It was time for my monthly review meeting with Larry Vessey and I was somewhat nervous as despite having another well received show, not selling out again, as well as some of the news from the financials for the month could curb some of the owner’s enthusiasm over having given me the reins of the company.

Vessey: Congratulations on the show David. From all reports the show continues to receive high reviews, but there are some items that I did want to go over.

Mack: Let me guess, you want to talk about the attendance and the sponsors, correct?

Vessey: Yes I do. Despite the reviews of the show being high, this was the lowest attendance of the year, even lower than your debut. Lower attendances bring lower gates, which in turn brings lower contributions from advertising sponsors. In fact, the only thing that doesn’t get lower is the wages we are paying, especially since people like Akima have a downside, so in essence we are paying him to wrestle in Japan for four months.

Mack: I understand your concerns, but I think it’s too early to worry about that. If the attendance stays the same level or falls for our next show then I agree we have cause for concern. But even with the lower gate from the attendance, and the lower amount brought in by the sponsors, we still made over 2 grand in profit, largely due to strong merchandise and dvd sales.

Vessey: Speaking of the next show, what do you have planned to continue our momentum?

Mack: Since I am not ready to blow off the Cage-Ota feud yet, I was thinking of using our C.O.T.T. alliance to bring in another wrestler, but someone even better known here than Brett Starr and he would go against Cahill in the main event. That lets us use Ota and Cage in another tag match to keep their feud going. In fact, I have already made the preliminary calls, and now it just needs your approval on the alliance loan documents to make it final.

Vessey: Hmm, yes that should be a sufficiently well-known name to appease the fans. What about the rest of the show?

Mack: I will give Harper another title defense to see if he can give a better performance than last month and we will continue the storylines around Bulldozer-Cahill and the tag titles.

Vessey: Alright then, let’s see if this last month was just a blip or the beginning of a trend. For your sake, I hope it’s the former. I’m willing to give you some leeway but if it looks like your plans to grow our fan base aren’t having the desired effect I can always go back to Bailey. He may not have the same potential for taking us to the next level that you do, but he’s a safe and solid choice if you don’t live up to that potential

Mack: No problem, you won’t be disappointed.

With that, we broke up the meeting. While I wanted to tell him to have more faith in me, given what I had accomplished in the past, I couldn’t for the simple reason I had the same doubts I believed he harbored. In the past, I was always available to plug into the main event as a known quantity and if not me, then Flash could anchor the last match if we were hurting for true main event level wrestlers. But now, I couldn’t wrestle anymore, and Flash was not the same man of 4 years ago. He was more of a gatekeeper now with maybe one more nostalgia run at the title in him, not someone who could be guaranteed to deliver the match of the night. Frank was also declining and not producing at the level he was during his Total Control run. I could have gone the safe route and done Cage-Ota again, but then right now there wasn’t a really good follow up to that. I didn’t say it to Vessey, but having Akima gone right now was really limiting my options. It would be a different story if and when we cracked the Regional scene and could bring in greater revenues from advertising sponsors. Then I would have the money to bring in at least one or two more people who could slide into the top of the card and provide options when someone isn’t available. But this month I had to roll the dice with using Cahill against someone who was known to our audience, but not a regular roster member as a main event to buy some more time. Time to get closer to Akima’s return, time for the fans not to get burned out on Cage-Ota matches and time for us to hopefully reach that next level.

The first contract renewal came up this month as Animal Harker’s last deal had ended. While I hadn’t done anything to really build him up and had moved the title off him so he wouldn’t have any extra leverage I did feel he had a future with us as at least a solid mid level roster guy, and potentially more if he continued to improve his ring work and his ability to interact with the fans. Which is why I offered him a 5 year ppa contract at a small increase over his previous deal. It gave him job security and it gave me time to see if he could develop past the lower half of the roster. With that bit of business out of the way, it was time to catalog all the news and happenings in the wrestling world during March 2014.

NEWS

  • GCG have risen to ‘Cult’ Ranking , giving them an edge over the other regional promotions in Japan and potentially paving the way for more exposure through tv and ppv in the future.
  • Lightweight puroresu style wrestler 18 yr old Hirotsugu Satou graduates from the PGHW dojo and is assigned to the developmental promotion SAISHO.
  • 19 yr old Maria Guest, a protégé of Farrah Hesketh, debuts in the industry and is taking indy bookings.
  • The 2014 class of the UK National School of Wrestling graduates with 5 people now entering the scene.
  • The class consists of 17 yr old cruiserweight Cain Carlisle, 18 yr old Dane Rowley who is looking to become a color commentator, 20 yr old bodybuilder Richard ‘Doomsday’ McDonald whose powerful physique and 6’6” frame far outshine his actual ring skills, 17 yr old Edison Silva, who uses elements of MMA in his wrestling and the star of the class, the menacing almost 7’ and 340 lb Grave Digger. All but Doomsday get signed onto the 21CW roster.
  • All is not well backstage as midcarders Chess Maniac and Slayyer ( who had worked for me with MHW a few years ago) are now feuding backstage and are said to intensly dislike each other.
  • Love is in the air in USPW as Casey Valentine follows in his uncle Peter’s footsteps by becoming very close with the Strong family, in Casey’s case, it is dating Sam Strong’s daughter Alicia. Also Queen Emily is now seeing fellow veteran Charlie Thatcher.
  • In QAW, its reported that manager Vinny Cruz and his client midcarder Raquel Alvarado are dating each other now.
  • ACPW midcarder Marc Raisin has suffered a spinal disalignment and is going to be on the shelf for at least 5 weeks.

SIGNINGS AND LEAVINGS

  • BCG makes an offer to Brian Holmes to tour with them for the next three months.
  • BHOTWG calls up Ryushi Sato from their development company.
  • Former two time tag champion Frank de Pain leaves EWA.
  • 6 time tag champion Shotaro Ikina is not re-signed by GCG, perhaps believing the 49 yr old has nothing more to offer them.
  • Brian Holmes departs PGHW. PGHW also calls up SATO from development.
  • Xavi Ferrara signs a ppa deal with RIPW.
  • SWF releases former 2 time tag champion and North American champion Joe Sexy and call up Spencer Spade and Primus from RIPW.
  • Former tag champion Lars Brecher walks out on his contract with UEW over pay differences.
  • 5SSW brings in Thea Davis, Joanne Rodriguez, Karen Bilous and Jillian Jarvis for their tour.
  • Paige Croft, apparently unhappy she has never received a decent push during her 5 years with AAA , walks out on them.
