The David Mack Chronicles: NYCW 2014- The Changing of the Guard

Recommended Posts

It had been a busy time for me since the announcement we had gained Regional status. I contacted a couple of people who had worked for me before, albeit for only a few months , but both had the talent and were known enough to slot directly into the upper card with no problem. Also I added one other person who was really young, only 23, but he had been working in a small promotion out west for a couple years, and the booker there told me he had the makings of a real star. Given that booker’s name was John Campbell aka Nemesis, that got my attention, and the tapes of Frantic Ali did nothing to dispute the fact the guy had talent. Although it isn’t widely known, the various booking staffs of all the promotions do tend to keep in sporadic contact, or at least have the lines of communications open. After all, when we are scouting talent to be added to our roster, its worthwhile to seek the opinions of those people he’s actually worked for. Not only for evaluation of their ring talent, but for how they get along backstage as well, what kind of personality do they have, and whether they are easy or difficult to work with. As in any situation, sometimes overwhelming talent trumps everything else, but no one wants to go into a situation blind. You want at least an idea of what you are getting when you bring someone into your promotion. So now we had three new faces to debut at our next show, along with re-newing Bulldozer Brandon Smith on a long ppa contract. It was no guarantee he’d be here that entire time, given the potential of TCW, SWF or even NOTBPW or USPW to possibly snatch him, but at least I wouldn’t need to worry about him wanting a ton more money anytime soon. Our revenues had increased substantially, but so had our overhead, and we weren’t out of the Ministry yet.

While becoming a Regional promotion was the biggest news for us in May, there was still other important things happening around the industry.

NEWS

  • Our referee Michael Bull, has decided to open his own wrestling promotion in Hawaii, called L(ethal)-Ring. Its an almost direct opposite of our product, mixing realistic looking combat ala ufc style with fast paced, lucha influenced wrestling. He has signed a smattering of talent from across most of the us regional feds, and since they are getting a grant from the Hawaiian state, he should have enough funding to avoid folding soon. Apparently taking a page from Stomper, Bull has named relatively young wrestler Bradford Peverall as his head booker.
  • Big news in Japan as PGHW owner Sadaharu Jimbo has passed away at age 72. The ownership reins have passed to his nephew Seiji Jimbo, who is also doing the booking for the company.
  • Professor Nero is retiring from the industry and his position as owner of RIPW has been taken by Gareth Wayne. Wayne has been headlining in Japan with WEXXV for the past few years and it will be interesting to see if he maintains the same developmental territory relationship that Nero had with SWF.
  • 21 yr old sumo wrestler Naozane Goto enters the industry in Japan. While not drawing any interest from a name promotion, word from his independent show matches indicate a potential to develop into a decent big man talent.
  • 18 yr old Ariel Breaks, a female wrestler and protégé of former NOTBPW Women’s champion Melody Cuthill, goes pro this month. She will need to prove herself in the indies but she definitely has a strong training pedigree.
  • 20 yr old Aussie, Blackwell “ The Burning” Bush enters the pro wrestling ranks. A solid technical style wrestler, but lacking in natural charisma is the initial reports on him.
  • The Mid Atlantic Boot Camp dojo graduates 20 yr old Trix Triumph, a smallish wrestler with basic all around skills. MAW offers him a spot on their roster as an opener.
  • 19 yr old Floridian Princeton Pryce is the latest graduate from the House of Stone. He has strong all around skills and is considered to have enough potential that NOTBPW offered him a written deal upon graduation rather than send him out to earn experience in the independent scene.
  • One of the biggest stars of the 70\80’s Crippler Ray Kingdom, retires from wrestling business at age 67. He had been a regional champion 8 times and was the pro wrestler of the year in 1988.
  • Two time former NOTBPW Women’s wrestling champion April Appleseed has retired from the ring at age 41. She had been involved in a big feud with Victoria Stone in 2003-2006 but hadn’t found work with a name promotion since NOTBPW let her go in 2006.
  • It was a somber month for pro wrestling as not only had Sadaharu Jimbo passed away, but other iconic names such as El Patron, age 73, Preston Holy, age 72, Pat Deacon, age 69 also died this month.
  • However, it wasn’t just elder statesmen of wrestling who met with tragedy. Stig Svennson, aka Captain Hero, a multitime UCR and UEW world champion, died this month at age 42. Cause of death is unknown at this time.
  • Former BHOTWG and current SWF monster heel Everest died at age 40. Although the autopsy results are not in yet, its clear that his 500Lb frame probably contributed to the apparent heart attack that ended his life.
  • Not as well known, but no less missed by the wrestling community, is former TWL jobber Kenny O Quinn, who passed away at age 57. Wrestling is a harsh business, and this month a very sad one.

  • Nicole Kiss and Teddy Powell are apparently an item backstage in PSW.
  • Jayson Van Pelt and Kamikaze are bonding in ACPW.
  • Horton Ravenwood has taken fellow RAW wrestler Pookie Possum under his wing.
  • Mario Heroic and a former wrestling partner of mine in Mexico, Genio Verde are said to be tight friends in MPWF.
  • Joy deWitt and Davis Wayne Newton are dating now in 4C.
  • Alexis Littlefeather and Danielle sweetheart are bff’s in QAW.
  • Former MAW compatriots Mainstream Hernandez and Titan are enjoying a less than heartfelt reunion in FCW as they are said to strongly dislike each other.
  • EX2010’s Shirai Yanagawa is expected to be on the shelf for up to 6 months due to some nerve damage in his neck.
  • Some wrestlers are hitting the gym extra hard as Jared Johnson and Pajaro del Fuego bulk up to middleweight from lightweight and Omar Brown rises to Light heavyweight.
  • WLW makes a deal to begin a new tv show titled WLW Destruction on japan sports 3 channel.
  • MPWF is bringing back their Evento Principal de la Lucha Libre show on El Canal del hombre dos network.

SIGNINGS AND LEAVINGS

  • L-Ring brings in Panda Mask II, Rob Reynolds, Brendan Idol, Frantic Ali, Storm Spillane, Acid II, mc Motormouth, Rudy Velazquez, Insane Machine, Steven Parker, Findley o Farroday, Hugh de Aske, Kashmir Singh and Jim Lou Freebush to round out their initial roster.
  • In a strange twist of fate, Demons Anger and Spite both sign contracts as road agents on the same day. Anger joins PSW while Spite joins RIPW. Archie Judge doesn’t play favorites and signs with both promotions.
  • El Maestro signs with OLLIE while Angel de Mexico and Hijo del Mephisto join the SOTBPW roster, both of them leaving rival MPWF.
  • Reaper Dante and Diamante Azul are joining the Hinote Dojo tour.
  • Warmonger leaves DIW while Monday Next departs RAW.
  • The Punisher is not resigned by PSW and Ade Nelson(aka Paradigm) is released from MAW.
  • 4C doesn’t renew the contract of Eric Blackley.

TITLE CHANGES

  • Dragon Assassin ends Saori Nakadan’s 4 month and 12 defense run as 5SSW All Asian champion to win the belt for a 2nd time.
  • The Brendon Sisters (Michelle and Tracey) regain the AAA Tag team titles for a 5th time after ending the 18 month reign of Steph Blake and Zoe Amnis.
  • Rokumon Matsushita and Sharaku Okimasa claim the vacant BCG world tag titles.
  • Lightning Lomas wins a loser leaves town match against Eric Blackley to capture the 4C Hardcore Championship for a 2nd time.
  • The Campeon de Herencia de Mundo title in MPWF is left vacant following Hijo del Mephisto’s defection to SOTBPW.
  • Roderick Remus beats Max Mayhem to end the latter’s year long reign and claim the MAW American title.
  • Silver Tiger defeats Extraodinario Jr to win the OLLIE Campeon de Mexico title for a 2nd time.
  • Little Bill Lebowski dethrone Teddy Powell to claim the PSW National title.
  • Akinori Kwakami beats Ryoma Muruyama for the PGHW International belt.
  • Goemon Komiya and Hirobumi Takimota win the vacant Saisho Destiny tag titles.
  • Koshiro “Gonna Kill you” Ino takes down Benny Benson to win the TCW International title.
  • Menace beat Aleksander Knyazev to win the UEW Nations title for a 3rd time.

<p><strong>Kid Toma </strong>VS Black Hat Bailey</p><p>

<em>There are actually a couple of choices as I believe Clark Alexander qualifies as well as Ford Gumble, but I think Toma is the choice here. </em></p><p>

Southern Stars VS <strong>Old School Principles © </strong>for the NYCW Tag Team Titles</p><p>

<em>Too early for a change</em></p><p>

Dean Waldorf VS <strong>Monty Trescarde© f</strong>or the Tri-State Regional Championship</p><p>

<em>Trescarde makes the routine defense to establish himself as a champion.</em></p><p>

Whistler VS <strong>Jack Griffith</strong></p><p>

<em>At this point, this victory will solidify Jack as a solid contender.</em></p><p>

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS <strong>Man Mountain Cahill</strong></p><p>

<em>As much as I anticipate Cahill's de-push, I think for storyline reasons he takes the first bout, and loses the last two.</em></p><p>

Roger Cage© VS <strong>Ota, Warrior of Darkness</strong> in a steel cage for the NYCW Empire Championship</p><p>

<em>Waldorf would be a good champ but Monty isn´t dropping newly won belt on first defense either.</em></p><p> </p><p>

???? VS Black Hat Bailey

Black Hat's job these days should be to put people over, I don't think Quadruple Question Mark is being brought in with all this mystery surrounding him to be a jobber.

Southern Stars VS Old School Principles © for the NYCW Tag Team Titles

OAP's just won these belts, they ain't dropping them to this makeshift pair of jobbers.

Dean Waldorf VS Monty Trescarde© for the Tri-State Regional Championship

Trescarde just win this belt, besides The Ring Generals need to prove themselves more as singles performers before they start winning singles titles

Whistler VS ????

See ???? vs Black Hat Bailey

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Man Mountain Cahill

BSB's clearly has more long term upside, but I suppose you still want Cahill to look relatively strong. I'm going to go for the Bulldozer winning, but only via a DQ with Cahill following that up with a post match beatdown.

Roger Cage© VS Ota, Warrior of Darkness in a steel cage for the NYCW Empire Championship

Time to get this belt onto someone, who can give you stronger matches at the top of the card.

Bonus guess the ????

These are so going to be wrong......:p

NYCW BROOKLYN BRAWL

Saturday Week 2 June 2014

Held at the Ministry in Queens ATT: 907

PRE SHOW

Ran a handful of tag matches with some random pairings. One pair looked like they could work well together, although both are openers, while another pair , who on paper should be a good match, just did not mesh at all. It was a summer bikini showdown for the valets this month and Haley Buck is the triumphant valet this time.

MAIN SHOW

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RockDownpour_alt2.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Ernie%20Turner_zpsofjuwwsc.jpg

Rock Downpour: Last month, we had 2 titles change hands. All three titles are on the line again tonight .

Ernie Turner: I’ll tell you one title I think will change hands. That pretty boy Roger Cage is going to be trapped in a cage with the Warrior of Darkness and I don’t like his chances of escaping with the belt.

Rock: Maybe so Ernie, but Cage has overcome adversity before. But lets talk about the other big news from last month. NYCW is growing, and with growth come some new, or in this case, returning faces as we get ready to start our first match as Clark Alexander returns to NYCW.

Turner: Unfortunately for Alexander, his return is against one of the toughest men to ever lace up the boots, Black Hat Bailey, and I don’t think Bailey plans to give him a warm welcome.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/ClarkAlexander_alt1.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/BlackHatBailey.jpg

Clark Alexander VS Black Hat Bailey in a one fall singles match.

Bailey tries to control the match up early with brawling and underhanded tactics, but Alexander is far to savvy to be taken off his game for long. After a few minutes of back and forth action, Alexander is able gain control after he quickly forces a break from the ropes on the Bailey Breaker submission attempt. An irish whip\backdrop combo sets the stage as Alexander makes a triumphant return to NYCW by planting the rising Bailey with his patented Ice Breaker DDT and covers Bailey for the pin.

Clark Alexander defeated Black Hat Bailey in 9:48 by pinfall with an Ice Breaker

Match Rating D-

A good match that served its purpose in re-introducing Alexander and giving him a credible win over Bailey. But it also demonstrates just how quickly Bailey is declining now in that even ten minutes is emptying his gas tank. I have tons of respect for Bo and he has earned the right to decide himself when its time. I just hope for his sake he decides that time is soon.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Alexander makes a successful return to NYCW. Coming up now , the new tag champions OSP take on former champions Southern Stars. Can the veterans fend off this young and hungry team?

Turner: Are you serious Rock? Can they fend off a moron and an Elvis wanna be? Of course they can. I always said the Southern Stars title win last time was a total fluke.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/AnimalHarker-1_zps66a00a10.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TennesseeWilliam_zpse109178a-1.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RickSanders-1.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/TheMaskedMauler.jpg

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Tag.jpghttp://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Tag.jpg

Southern Stars VS Old School Principles © in a one fall tag team match for the NYCW Tag Team championship.

Harker starts things off, and even surprises Sanders a little when he shows some counter wrestling to go with his usual straight ahead brawling. But when the tag is made to Williams, the veterans take control and isolate Williams from his partner. Williams makes several attempts to break free and finally succeeds. Harker comes in and clears the ring momentarily, but OSP are too skilled to be on the defensive for long and a doubleteam leaves Harker on his back and victim to Mauler’s dreaded Iron Claw! Sanders cuts off Williams and Harker, unable to break the hold or reach the ropes, submits.

Old School Principals defeated The Southern Stars in 7:34 when The Masked Mauler defeated Animal Harker by submission with an Iron Claw. Old School Principals make defence number 1 of their NYCW Tag Team titles.

Match Rating D-

The very definition of routine title defense. Harker and Williams are a good team, and probably have a good chance at title runs in the future, but with a very veteran laden roster right now, they are mired in the lower card and thus stuck looking up at the lights for now.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_alt-1.jpg

Rock: Coming up is a newcomer to the NYCW as west coast wrestler Frantic Ali takes on former Tri-State and tag champion Sammy the Shark.

Turner: Sammy doesn’t have Cage’s coattails to ride on this time, and my sources tell me Frantic Ali is a protégé of none other than Nemesis himself.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/SammyTheShark.jpg VS http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Frantic%20Ali_zps1zltitit.jpg

Sammy the Shark VS Frantic Ali in a one fall singles match.

It’s a back and forth match as Sammy’s experience edge cancels out Ali’s strong offense and slight advantages in speed and athleticism. Both men come close to victory a couple times, but as always in a close match , its one mistake that makes the difference. Sammy goes for the Ace in the Hole a little too early, and Ali is able to counter it into a belly to back Suplex. He then picks up Sammy in a fireman’s carry and ends the match with a Death Valley Driver. Ali covers Sammy for the pin fall and the successful debut.

Frantic Ali defeated Sammy The Shark in 7:38 by pinfall with a Death Valley Driver.

Match Rating D-

Maybe it was a case of nerves first night debuting for a new promotion, but Ali didn’t seem quite as sharp as in the tapes of the matches I had watched. Still it was a decent debut and Ali should be a good addition to the midcard now, with potential to grow in the future.

Intermission time as Fern Hathaway comes out to the ringside area, air gun in hand and firing souvenier t-shirts to all corners of the audience. The fans have fun and a few at ringside are lucky enough to even take a picture with the beautiful Fern.

Rating D+

Fern is still behaving herself, even after having signed her new deal. She still isn’t popular backstage ( personality wise at least, as I am sure half the roster would love to bed her) but she hasn’t made any waves and has consistently done her job show after show to go out there and entertain and energize the crowd.

Rock: It’s two for two for the newcomers, and can the returning Jack Griffith make it three for three as he faces former SCCW rival Whistler.

Turner: Whistler was tough in his day, back in the 20th century, but Griffith is the very definition of overcoming adversity. We all know his history after SCCW and how he battled back, and now he has returned from an injury that kept him on the shelf for over a year.

Whistler VS Jack Griffith in a one fall singles match.

It has been over a decade, but these two had fought each other in several wars over the SCCW Championship belt. Back then Whistler was the veteran in his prime, while Griffith was the up and coming star. Now Whistler is winding down his three decades in the ring while Griffith is trying to recapture some of the magic of his youth after years of adversity. There is no subtlety here, just two men standing toe to toe and deciding who the tougher man is with his fists. Over ten minutes of hard hitting action and its decided in a moment when Whistler thinks he has the advantage and goes for the Rebel Yell shoulder tackle. Griffith was only feigning and is ready for it and counters into the Jack in the Box Spinebuster and covers the stunned Whistler for the pin.

Jack Griffith defeated Whistler in 13:05 by pinfall with a Jack in The Box

Match Rating D

Jack was with us a couple of years ago, before I left for SWF and he was in line for a main event push as the guy who was originally going to be added to the Main Attraction as the new front man. But a majorly broken ankle in a match in PSW put him on the shelf for over a year and killed that plan. Subsequently I went to the SWF and ended up suffering my career ending injury, so I have a lot of empathy for Jack’s situation. Which is why both Vessey and I felt we owed him a chance to come back and see if he could still deliver for us in the upper card. So far, given a limited opponent, the results are encouraging.

Rock: A strong win for Jack Griffith. Now the new Tri-State Champion Monty Trescarde defends his title against the former 4 time tag champion Dean Waldorf.

Turner: Waldorf is an excellent tag wrestler, but speaking from experience, I can say it’s a whole different story in that ring when there isn’t a partner to tag out to.

Dean Waldorf w\ Haley Buck VS Monty Trescarde © in a one fall singles match for the NYCW Tri-State Regional Championship.

Waldorf and Trescarde battle back and forth with neither one able to keep a lasting edge. Waldorf shows he doesn’t need to rely on a partner and gets the champion in several near pins. Trescarde, feeling the momentum slipping away from him, coldly calculates how to turn the tide and starts using some underhanded shortcuts to take control of the match back from Waldorf. Trescarde rolls up Waldorf near the ropes and grabs them for leverage. The referee, looking at Waldorf’s shoulders to count the pin fall, is out of position to see Trescarde grabbing the ropes and counts one, two, three, despite Haley’s protestations.

Monty Trescarde defeated Dean Waldorf in 8:05 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage. Monty Trescarde makes defence number 1 of his NYCW Tri-State Regional title.

Match Rating D+

Waldorf turns in an impressive performance in his shot at the title. Of course, some of that may have to do with the fact he and Monty seemed to have a natural chemistry with each other in the ring. I know some guys I wrestled with in my past things just seemed that little bit easier, the communication and timing was just that little bit smoother and it made the matches just that much better, not only for us, but for the fans as well. Trescarde also shows he’s not content to rest on his laurels, but is actively working to improve his craft as well and show he deserves this run with the title.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/Bulldozer%20Brandon_alt1_zpspfyikndw.jpg

Bulldozer Brandon Smith is backstage and has some comments before his match.

Bulldozer: Cahill, where I come from, you settle things with someone man to man. You don’t go around attacking his friends and that’s why I stepped in to stop your bullying tactics. You wanted a shot at Cage for the title, that’s all well and good. We all want to get that belt one day. But I don’t approve the tactics you used. Instead of going after Cage directly, you decided to attack those around him and that I will not stand for. You are nothing but a bully Cahill, and I learned long ago, the only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them!

Rating D+

Good promo with a good response from the crowd for Bulldozer’s first real main event level feud.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/ManMountainCahill.jpg

Not to be out done, Cahill has his own words for Bulldozer.

Cahill: Well Bulldozer, where I come from, you stay the hell out of another man’s business or you get your face caved in! You had no business involving yourself in my fight against Cage and since you didn’t heed the warning I generously gave you, then I am going to make YOU my business! Smith, since you decided to come mess with the Man Mountain, the Man Mountain is going to come crashing down on you!

Rating C

And Cahill shows where his value really lies, in the ability to generate real heat from the crowd with his menacing persona. While he is not even half the wrestler of someone like Steve Flash in the ring, his ability to gain heat and interest outside the ring in the match is among the best on our roster.

Rock: Strong words from both sides as they prepare to face each other coming up next.

Turner: As big and powerful as Smith is, I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes facing an angry and focused Man Mountain Cahill.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith VS Man Mountain Cahill in a one fall singles match.

This was less a wrestling match and more of an all out fight. Several times the fight spilled to the outside and the referee was forced to get them back inside the ring. Cahill was beating Bulldozer pillar to post, but Smith would not give up and kept coming back for more. Finally after it spilled out once again, and both men ignored the referee repeatedly and pushed him aside, Michael Bull had enough and disqualified both men.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith drew with Man Mountain Cahill in 15:53 following a double disqualification.

Match Rating D

Good opening match in the feud. Although Cahill wanted to both be protected and kept looking stronger than Dozer in order to agree to take the double dq and since Bailey’s last contract with Cahill promised creative control, I had no option other than to agree.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/CheerleaderNicki.jpg

Cheerleader Nicki comes out for another short intermission and dances around ring side and handing out some Roger Cage merchandise to a few lucky young fans in the audience. After the customary posing for pictures , she take her place near the entrance way, waiting on her ‘client’ Roger Cage.

Rating D

Nicki doing her usual job of getting the crowd pumped a little before Roger Cage’s matches, which more times than not are the main events of the show.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/RogerCage.jpg

Roger Cage comes down to the ring, grabs a microphone and addresses the audience while holding up the belt.

Cage: This here represents the pinnacle of NYCW, the Empire Championship. It’s no secret I enjoy the perks of being a champion. I enjoy having the supermodels on my arm, of having complimentary front row seats at Madison Square Garden and any Broadway play I care to attend, of being able to go into any 5 star restaurant in New York and instantly be seated at their finest table. But what some people don’t realize is how hard I will fight to maintain having that luxury lifestyle. People think that living the high life makes me soft somehow, that the skill and dedication and willingness to put it all on the line that made me champion in the first place somehow no longer applies. Cahill thought that and I beat his big ass down. Now the Warrior of Darkness, Ota , thinks that he has the advantage because we will be locked in a cage. But that’s where you are wrong Ota! I don’t fear the cage, I welcome it! Hell, I took Cage as my name because I embrace the no retreat , no surrender philosophy! You wanted the cage Ota? You got it, but you also get the Rage that comes with it!!

Rating C-

Excellent promo from the champion heading into the main event.

Rock: Strong words from the champion heading into his title defense against the Warrior of Darkness.

Turner: More like big words if you ask me. Let’s see Cage back it up when he truly has no escape from Ota in the confines of four sides of steel.

http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n329/Dragonmack/NYCW_Empire.jpg

Roger Cage© vs Ota, Warrior of Darkness in a one fall singles match in a cage for the NYCW Empire Championship.

Brutal, bloody and back and forth for over twenty minutes as Cage and Ota used every tactic in their arsenal , and even made up a few new ones, to put their opponent away. Several attempts to escape or exit were blocked, several near pin falls from each man were kicked out of. Both men were cut open from being rammed or slammed into the unforgiving steel cage walls. The ending came when both men come crashing to the mat off the ropes. Cage gets up slightly ahead of Ota and goes for his reverse DDT, the Cage Rage, but Ota is able to push Cage back into the ring ropes, and as Cage bounces off, Ota runs in and delivers his enzuigiri kick finisher, the Ninja Strike! Ota covers the champion and gets the count, 1…2…3!

Ota, Warrior of Darkness defeated Roger Cage in a Cage match in 24:59 by pinfall with a Ninja Strike. Ota, Warrior of Darkness wins the NYCW Empire title.

Match Rating D+

Both men put total effort into the match, and their work was clearly evident in the way they performed that they had improved in some of the little things that make up a match, like selling the opponent’s offense, or building the proper psychology of the match so the moves don’t just seem like random acts, but show a purpose. But I have to admit, that while it was a perfectly decent main event match, it didn’t really distinguish itself from several other matches of the same caliber. It was good, it kept the crowd entertained, it should help keep our popularity growing, but its not a match someone will be talking about 10 years from now.

POST SHOW

There was a lot of interest from the fans in seeing and interacting with our newest members of the roster and Cahill definitely enjoyed playing into his character by actually intimidating people near his table with his menacing stare and imposing size ( though he never actually did anything to threaten anyone, more just using a mean gaze and doing stuff like crushing aluminum cans by hitting them with one of his hamfists). There was a lot of buzz around the now former Empire Champion and the new one, with Cage gracefully accepting the condolences of the fans, while Ota didn’t speak but would toss origami animals to fans that came up to him with kanji writing he later told me said ‘Welcome to the Reign of Darkness’.

OVERALL SHOW D+

It was only a six month reign for Cage this time, far shorter than his initial almost 2 yr run. But there were a couple of reasons for that. One , being that Cage has a contract coming due in a couple months and past experience has shown me that they are rarely simple when it involves your top stars, especially if they have leverage like the main title. Two is that, right now, there are more top challengers on the face side than the heel side, what with Akima due back next month, and the addition of Clark Alexander along with the already present Steve Flash and rising Bulldozer. On the heel side, Jack Griffith gets added to Ota, and an underwhelming main event performer Cahill. Bailey and Frank are no longer of really providing a main event challenge. So for both business and competitive reasons, it makes sense for Ota to carry the ball for a bit.

Larry Vessey had a meeting in Vegas ( he calls it meeting, I call it a bunch of old men having a mid life crisis) with the other C.O.T.T owners at the beginning of this month, so instead of our usual office review, he asked me to send him a financial statement, and a summary review of the last six months and what tentatively I had planned in the future.

It had been a hectic, but a productive six months so far. I had added a handful of regionally known talent that, while veteran, weren’t declining yet like half our upper card and main event was when I first took over in January. We had an exciting performer in Akima, who could headline here when he wasn’t off touring in Japan and we had some of the younger talent that was building up, such as Bulldozer Brandon Smith and Monty Trescarde. While they may be building up to eventually benefit someone else in the future, for now they provided a pipeline of people to fill upper level spots in case of losing our bigger stars like to other promotions or retirements, or tours of Japan. We had only lost one person from the roster, Spike ( aka New York Doll) and frankly he wasn’t much of a loss. He had been here as long as Sammy and failed to accomplish even half as much in the last decade. Plus his style was mostly hardcore with a little brawling and that was a better fit for PSW than us. I already had a bloated roster and when it was time for his renewal, honestly it was of such low importance I actually forgot about it till near the end and at that point he wasn’t interested in talking to me, and while I don’t blame him, I also really didn’t care.

Financially, we had been profitable each month, and with the increased sponsorship we were bringing in over 15k a month the last two months. That gives me a lot of flexibility in adding a big name should one become available, fit our style, ( and be willing to talk to us) as well as take advantage of loans and talent trades from our C.O.T.T allies to give a little boost to our shows every few months.

So in six months, we had reached our goal of becoming recognized as a regional level promotion and not only had we not lost any money, we were up 40% in operating funds. All I had to do was maintain this for another year and a half and I would have satisfied Vessey’s demands when he hired me.

Now that the past has been summarized, its time for the immediate future plans. Up till now, we had been running one overall storyline, with a couple minor branching stories and sowing some seeds for the future. Now that we had a larger, more talented roster and resources to supplement even further if necessary, it was time to expand more. That expansion was going to begin with arguably our biggest signature show, Gang Wars. While most of the matches would be the traditional 3 on 3 matches I had been going over a few plans in the last month to add some surprises. While I couldn’t keep the names I was bringing in secret from Vessey (since he signed the contracts) I was keeping the info under wraps from the rest of the roster so as to avoid any early leaks to the industry websites. Only Ota knew a couple of them, since he was going to be involved with one of the surprises. The second one might get lost in the shuffle as someone I honestly never thought would be available suddenly became available and agreed to a deal with us. He had been fairly well known in the area a decade ago and there was no denying his in ring skills , which could easily rival Steve Flash’s. Add those items to the return of Akima to the NYCW ring and Gang Wars had the potential to be our biggest show of the year.

Hmm... I have to think this is CH Threepwood, but I may be stretching -- it could also be his trainer, Acid, or Bryan Holmes. Whoever it is, it should be interesting -- 'could we see an eventual Iron Man match or (shocker) an Ultimate Submission match with Brandon Smith vs. the newcomer? Smith should have the skills to pull it off.

You know every time I play as NYCW in my personal games I never book Gang Wars as all three on three matches. Mainly because while I could use the COTT to bring in team CZCW, MAW, etc I just always forget that it is all 3 vs. 3 on the card.

I didn't even know it was supposed to be 3 vs. 3 until they showed the AI instructions with 2013.

But doing 3 vs. 3 fits something I wanted to do in game so I decided to keep the format.

Plans were underway for our biggest show of the year Gang Wars. I had contacted some people to add a big surprise element to the show, hired an incredibly talented ring worker who I honestly thought would never be available and extended our rising star Bulldozer Brandon Smith on a lengthy ppa contract. While he may never end up serving all of it, at least we won’t lose him to not wanting to re-negotiate a year or two down the road due to being too big for us. With the homefront taken care of it was time to check out the rest of the wrestling industry to see the news for June 2014.

NEWS

  • SWF are taking the plunge at International exposure again, meaning possible roster expansion.
  • Big news in the industry as 68 yr old Sam Strong has retired from the industry and given up his position as majority owner of USPW. A surprising dark horse in Dean Daniels, an American wrestler who has spent the majority of his career wrestling in WLW and GCG in Japan, is the choice of the board of directors to take over ownership control of USPW. It remains to be seen how this change in ownership will affect the future of USPW especially with Daniels also handling the booking duties for the promotion.

  • 24yr old Cobra “The Snake Man” whose gimmick is bringing a live python to the ring, enters the industry this month. He’s a brawler with decent skills who has some potential once he sharpens the basics.
  • Hell Monkey protégé, 21 yr old Laura Flame, enters the ranks of womens wrestling this month. She blends martial arts skills with regular wrestling and looks to have a solid future once she gets some experience.
  • TCW dojo graduate with a very pompous ring name, 22 yr old The Lord of the Ring, enters the business and is signed to a contract by TCW. He’s a fairly average brawler but apparently TCW is willing to see what he can develop into.
  • Piledriver School of Wrestling graduate Deever Arnold, a young 19 yr old Cruiserweight from New York, breaks into the business. Sporting a very muscular physique for a high flyer, he incorporates a lot of power moves along with the typical cruiserweight high risk style.
  • Former Main Attraction and Painful Procedure member Randall Hopkirk retires from the ring at age 49. In addition to his run in NYCW with us a couple years ago, he was a two time TCW Tag team champion, a TCW Hardcore Champion and held the Texas Wrestling League tag titles twice in the 90’s.
  • Austrian millionare Len Schultz, always rumored to be in the mix whenever possible ownership of an European promotion came up, has retired at age 65.
  • 48 yr old Hajime Sugisata, who spent most of his career in the indies but did have stints with WEXXV and INSPIRE as a jobber, has hung up the wrestling boots.
  • WEXXV icon and 3 time Warrior’s Heart champion Saionji Omura has passed away at age 66. Known for wrestling into his 60’s, he had also achieved some level of fame in the 70’s in America, winning tag titles once with the legendary Dick the Devastator and holding a couple of regional championships.
  • Upper carder Pierrot of IPW had some uncomplimentary things to say about opener Deadly Deadshot, claiming that the young wrestler needed to ‘put in his time’ in the immortal words of IPW booker and part owner Nemesis.
  • Jason Dempsey, a wrestler in VWA, has a lot of kind words about veteran Modern Day Warlord, stating the older wrestler has taken Dempsey under his wing and is looking out for his future in the company.
  • TCW’s Bryan Vessey, younger brother of NYCW owner Larry Vessey, has been put on the shelf for a month to recover from a concussion sustained in the ring.
  • BCG wrestler Toshinobu Taku will miss 3 months of ring time due to a broken arm suffered in a match.

SIGNINGS AND LEAVINGS

  • PGHW adds Pavel Vanzycha, Nigel Svensson and Rhino Umaga for their upcoming tour.
  • DIW sign Monday Next.
  • SWF call up Scythe and Masked Patriot from RIPW to bolster their roster for their planned International expansion.
  • MPWF signs OLLIE valet Secreto to their roster as well to replace Gabriela Ortega, whose contract was not renewed.
  • The first ripples of the Dean Daniels era begin as Java and Gorgon are not re-signed.
  • ACPW, in financial trouble, releases several wrestlers including Mario da Silve, Topher Smith, Gram Gorman, Alistair Shufflebottom, Dermot Ayres and Reggie Bishop.
  • CZCW lightens its roster a little, not re-signing Jonnie Perez and Jackpot Jordan.
  • Masa Kurata has not been re-signed by WLW as the 2011 dojo graduate failed to impress enough in his two plus years with the company.
  • Strongman ( or when I worked with him known as Verdugo Estupendo) has been let go by SOTBPW. While he had been an important member of La Alianza del Terror, the 47 yr old had been declining in the ring for the past couple years.

TITLE CHANGES

  • The father and son tag team of Toshinobu and Yoshinaka Taku win the BCG tag titles from Rokuemon Matsushita and sharaku Okimasa, but Toshinobu’s injury forces them to vacate the title only a couple weeks later.
  • Sensational Dragon wins the BHOTWG Best of the Super Juniors Tournament for a 3rd time and second year in a row. His three wins matches the Awesome Kiyaru for most victories in the tournament’s history.
  • E-Z beats Cali Slick to win the GSW West Coast title.
  • Lug Phelan and Kip Keenan team up to beat Coulrophobia ( Hellech and Pierrot) to win the IPW Tag team titles.
  • Insane Machine claims the initial L-Ring Triple Crown title on the promotions first event.
  • Mario Heroic claims his first world title, winning the vacant MPWF Campeon de Herencia de Mundo belt.
  • RK Hayes and Tim Westybrook, without their usual tag partners, team up to win the NOTBPW tag titles from Omar Brown and Harlem Haynes, who had held the belts for a year.
  • Sally Anne Christiansen beats 3 time Woman’s Champion Kristabel Plum to claim her first NOTBPW Women’s title.
  • Ultimate Phoenix beats Axxis Jr to win the most prestigious title in luchadom, the SOTBPW Campeon de Mundo belt.
  • Jamie Anderson claims the UEW World title that was left vacant by the tragic passing of Stig Svensson the month before.

From the NYCW Website

NYCW Brooklyn Brawl saw the crowning of a new Empire Champion as the Warrior of Darkness Ota defeated Roger Cage for the belt. Now, heading into the biggest show of the year, Gang Wars, where most of the battles are 3 on 3, the solitary warrior sent this message.

Though the Warrior of Darkness stands alone, there are always shades of grey in the darkness and at Gang Wars a sleeping dragon will rise again. The Warrior once shared a vision with like minded people, and though those individuals have moved on the soul of the cult remains and others will stand alongside the Warrior and bring about the Reign of Darkness.

What does that cryptic message mean for the future of NYCW? Come find out at NYCW's signature show, GANG WARS!

Bulldozer Brandon Smith & Ring Generals VS Man Mountain Cahill & OSP in a 3 VS 3 match.

Ring Generals get a win back against OSP.

Whistler, Sammy The Shark and Tennessee Williams VS Black Hat Bailey, Honest Frank and Monty Trescarde in a 3 VS 3 match.

Most decorated group in GANG WARS history the might be but I just have a feeling that´s nice way to say that half of these guys are way past their prime... anyway, Monty is the one guy I see being most useful in near future so he gets a win here.

Roger Cage, Clark Alexander and Steve Flash VS ????, Ota, Warrior of Darkness and ???? in a 3 VS 3 match.

Guys on one shot deal rarely get any wins and I don´t see why that should be the case here either so Cage gets a win back here while Alexander and Flash raise their status as potential challengers as well.

Akima VS Jack Griffith in a top contender singles match.

I would assume that you would be bit hesitant to push Akima since he might well leave to another tour so Griffith feels like a safer bet to me, plus other than Ota, you don´t have many top level heels so keeping Griffith strong looks like a good plan.

Unfortunately, my memories on your previous NYCW diaries are bit hazy so I don´t remember for sure what happened in those but I´m still pretty sure that both Perez and James has been seen before and that James was actually teaming up with Ota for sometime so there would even be bit of history for this alliance.

Big hints. they have been in my NYCW Dynasties before, and they are available via the C.O.T.T.

Surprised you signed Clark Alexander. I've never thought much of him.

He doesn't seem to rise much in Cult or higher levels and I wouldn't make him the person to build around to try and grow from regional, but at regional he is a solid secondary title contender\main event gatekeeper who has decent popularity and good ring skills. He makes a good fit for a place like NYCW and is definitely an improvement over the likes of Black Hat Bailey, Whistler and Honest Frank at this point. Besides, until or unless SWF, TCW and or USPW fall to Cult and start not re-signing some of their lower level but rising talent people like Ota, Akima, Griffith and Alexander are the best you can find among people who are unsigned and will work for a small\regional federation.

Show will be posted tomorrow. As for the mystery people from the previous show, while Jack Griffith was an easy one ( especially since I gave away the first name) only one or two people guessed right on Clark Alexander.

Also ,as indicated in my monthly summary post, there will be one other new addition besides Ota's partners. While this person may not get the same fanfare that Ota's mystery partners do, he could end up being just as, if not more, important in the future of NYCW.
