I’ve never met a man as dedicated or driven as my father. I suppose they’re the kind of traits you’d expect a man like Vince McMahon to have, but it doesn’t matter how motivated to succeed you think he is, you’re all underselling him. Dad worked non-stop, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. He travelled worldwide with the World Wrestling Federation, was backstage at every single show, he never, ever took a day off. “The day I take a day off,” he’d always tell me, “that’s the day they’ll get me.”

Who were they? Well, that’s a long list, but as we begin, in April of 1997, right after one of the most successful shows of all time, WrestleMania XIII, it was World Championship Wrestling. A few years before WCW had a real chance of driving us out of business but now the WWF was far and away the top dog in professional wrestling. Dad had spent the past few years building new talent and reinvigorating the entire company. Hell, he’d been so successful that we were about to break off into two distinct touring brands, RAW and SmackDown.

Yes, I said we. The brand split was at least partially my suggestion. I figured that with all the talent the WWF had people were inevitably going to get lost in the shuffle, but if we broke the roster up then we could develop new stars and, most importantly, make twice as much money. Dad ate it up, loved the idea, whatever it took to make the WWF look like the biggest thing in the world. And it worked. More eyes were being drawn to us than ever before. WCW were getting further and further behind us. We were invincible.

But nothing ever runs smoothly in professional wrestling, and while we were riding high going into the brand split we couldn’t take our foot of the peddle. Dad knew that better than anyone. “Complacency breeds failure.” WCW were still chasing us, and if we gave them an inch then they’d take a mile. We couldn’t let that happen, we wouldn’t. Even with the troubles that were just around the corner.

We’d turned the tide, now it was time for us to win the war once and for all.

It's great to see so much support for this project. Just as a note the first RAW, which is the draft, will be a full write-up and then after that RAW and SmackDown will move to a more condensed style similar to what I've used previously, with a spotlight segment and a main event write up. I feel like that's needed with two brands.

This is also a 24 hour warning as the debut show will be up tomorrow night, so you have until then to get any more predictions in.

Tonight the WWF would begin a new era as the brand split began, but first the rosters had to be decided. The rules to tonight were simple, both brands would make ten draft picks, single stars or certain teams, and the remaining rosters would be drafted by random lottery immediately following the show. Starting tomorrow night on SmackDown these rosters will be locked down. RAW stars will appear on RAW, SmackDown stars on SmackDown. The landscape of the World Wrestling Federation will forever be changed, and it all began here. As the result of a coin flip before the show Vince McMahon would draft first for RAW. Vince cockily said that he’d already beaten World Championship Wrestling so badly that he’d had to create competition for himself in the form of SmackDown, and that he was going to beat them as well. Vince said that there was only one choice to be made for the premier show in the World Wrestling Federation, and that was the WWF World Heavyweight Champion, Owen Hart! Roddy wasn’t surprised, saying Owen was the only logical first pick, but that the WWF roster is loaded with talent, including Owen’s own brother. Candido’s technical skills proved to be a good match for Mysterio’s speed and risk-taking style as Candido looked to ground the European Champion and keep him on the mat. Tonight we have seen all ten of these men drafted to different shows, with The Kliq being split up thanks to the efforts of Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper. For this version of the group this match was their swan song and they wanted to go out with a bang, but that wasn’t going to be easy when their opponents consisted of the WWF World Heavyweight Champion, the WWF World Tag Team Champions, the Macho Man and The British Bulldog. A lengthy bout ensued with all ten men getting some time in the ring with no clear winner in sight. As was always going to happen this match eventually descended into complete chaos with all ten men splitting off to fight it out. As the action spilled out of the ring only Owen Hart and Shawn Michaels were left and with both of these men part of the RAW roster this could easily be a future title match. Tonight it was the champion who was left standing tall as Owen Hart managed to counter a Sweet Chin Music and lock in the Sharpshooter. So consider all that when I tell you that a few weeks before WrestleMania XIII Vince McMahon himself approached me and told me that when the brand split went down he wanted me to head up the booking team for SmackDown. Me, Paul Heyman, actually booking for the World Wrestling Federation? Course Jim Ross didn’t like it, he’d done a great job booking things for the last few years, taking the fight to WCW, he couldn’t understand why a guy like me was suddenly being given so much power. He was still the head booker for RAW obviously, but he thought that he’d get to keep running the entire company, even with the split. Vince though, he saw things differently.
