Tonight’s RAW kicked off in a similar fashion, with the Heartbreak Kid and The X-Factor hitting the ring to lay down a challenge. First though Syxx had a few words to say to Nash and Hall, running the two down for attacking Michaels and turning their back on a man who was supposed to be their friend. Syxx said that there was no way he was going to sit back and watch those two do it again, not to a man who has helped him become the man he is today! “I’ve respected Shawn Michaels for as long as I’ve been part of the World Wrestling Federation, so it’s an honour to stand beside him right now and challenge Kevin Nash and Scott Hall to face us tonight!</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="kBd0dNb.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/kBd0dNb.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="rSbrBqM.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/rSbrBqM.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Shawn Michaels and Syxx got an answer, but it probably wasn’t the one they expected. Instead of Nash and Hall they got Shane Douglas and Lance Storm, the Franchise Players mocking Syxx’s speech. Douglas said it was cute of Syxx to say all that but they know better, the real reason Syxx saved Michaels is so that he can ride his coattails to the top of RAW. “Well pretty boys, we’re not gonna let that happen. We’re not gonna stand around and watch guys like you take our spots just because the boss likes you! So how about tonight you forget about Nash and Hall and you worry about the two men standing in front of you, because we’d be happy to kick your ass!” Shawn Michaels was happy to accept Shane Douglas’ challenge, telling him that it’d be good warmup before they kick those double crossing bastards heads off!</p><p> </p><p> <strong>RATING:</strong> B (82)</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="wqgw26H.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/wqgw26H.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> 1. Scott Steiner questioned Jim Cornette’s claims last week that Vader is the strongest member of the RAW roster and put his own name in the mix for that title when he took on Wraith. Steiner looked impressive, throwing Wraith about with a variety of suplexes and finishing him off with the Steiner Recliner. <strong>(B- / 75)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - The match is over, but the moment the bell rings Steiner is blindsided by a charging Vader! Steiner throws Steiner into the corner, delivering a massive splash before finishing him off with the Vaderbomb! Jim Cornette told Steiner that Vader truly is the strongest there is, and now Steiner is going to experience that first hand. <strong>(B- / 76)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Raven sat alone in a dark room, speaking directly to the camera. He said that last week Rey Mysterio escaped by the skin of his teeth because of a technicality. Where Raven is from that chair shot wouldn’t have even been mentioned, but that’s because he’s from the darkness and Mysterio from the light. Raven challenged Mysterio to put the WWF European Championship on the line against him one more time so that he can introduce Mysterio to the dark, and tear everything that means something to him away. <strong>(B / 80)</strong></p><p> </p><p> 2. Hardcore Holly had little trouble putting away Tom Prichard, finishing off a short squash with the Alabama Slam. <strong>(C- / 57)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Last week the Nation of Domination offered Harlem Heat a spot in their group. This week they got their answer. With New Jack noticably missing Faarooq and Mustapha Saed sought out Booker T & Stevie Ray to find out their decision, but it wasn’t one they were going to like. Harlem Heat said they were happy doing things their own way, especially after the Nation embarrassed themselves last week. Faarooq was far from happy, but Harlem Heat weren’t at all bothered! <strong>(B- / 73)</strong></p><p> </p><p> 3. An interesting tag team bout pitted the legendary Legion of Doom against relative newcomers The Dudley Boyz. Despite the difference in experience The Dudleyz have made an immediate impact in the WWF and continued to do so here. They overcame the powerful Hawk & Animal, putting the latter down for the three count with the 3D. <strong>(B / 78)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - The Dudleyz didn’t get much time to celebrate as they were interrupted by Steve Austin & Brian Pillman. For once the WWF World Tag Team Champions weren’t out there to fight, they were out there to talk. The Dudleyz seem to think they’re a big deal, that they’re trouble, hellraisers, but the problem there is RAW’s already got two guys just like that, and The Dudleyz were looking at them. Austin & Pillman said they’d accept The Dudleyz challenge to come after their titles, but only because they couldn’t wait to kick their ass and show them who the real hellraisers are around here. <strong>(B- / 73)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Paul Ellering again spoke about bringing his monster to the World Wrestling Federation, however he now revealed that he wasn’t speaking about one monster, but two. Ellering said that they are immortal and that together they will gather everything they want. Ellering asked who better than he to bring these two men to RAW? Who better indeed? <strong>(D / 46)</strong></p><p> </p><p> 4. Ted DiBiase has promised to ‘reinvest’ in the Million Dollar Corporation after a rough few years, and after booting Tatanka last week this was the opportunity for Bam Bam Bigelow to show why he should be kept around. It wasn’t going to be easy as he squared off against a man who has experience fighting big men, Diamond Dallas Page. Page seemed to be on the verge of victory when Eddie Guerrero showed up, distracting Page from ringside long enough for Bigelow to catch Page out. One big splash in the corner and a Bam Bamsault later and Bigelow had picked up a massive victory. <strong>(B- / 71)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Post-match Tatanka charged the ring and went straight for Bam Bam Bigelow! Tatanka’s strength, coupled with Bigelow’s fatigue following a tough match, meant Tatanka could really take the fight to him and he ended up clotheslining Bigelow straight over the top rope to the floor. DiBiase led an irate Bigelow up the ramp while Tatanka made it clear he wasn’t done with either man. <strong>(D / 42)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Backstage The Bodydonna’s attempted to challenge The Franchise Players to a rematch from last week. Shane Douglas & Lance Storm brushed the pair off, pointing out that tonight they were in the main event while Candido & Bagwell weren’t even on the show, and that they weren’t lowering themselves to facing them again. “Come talk to us when you’re worth our time”. <strong>(B- / 76)</strong></p><p> </p><p> 5. The British Bulldog had a big opportunity to build momentum ahead of his WWF World Championship match at Capital Carnage as he faced off against Mr. Perfect. Bulldog’s Capital Carnage opponent Owen Hart was watching the action from commentary as Bulldog gained the upperhand. That was until Davey Boy seemed to tweak his knee. Owen immediately left commentary to go and check on his friend but Davey Boy took it the wrong way, insisting he didn’t need Owen’s help and telling him to leave. The distraction made it easy for Mr. Perfect to slip in from behind and catch Bulldog with a small package rollup to steal the victory, much to Owen’s dismay. <strong>(B- / 76)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Backstage Etsuko Mita again attempted to get the attention of Madusa as she sought out a shot at the WWF Women’s Championship. Madusa again however brushed her off, telling Mita she took this title from her once and she wasn’t in the mood to humiliate her all over it again. Madusa told Mita to go do something worthwhile with her time, like go back to Japan, because as far as she’s concerned she’s never getting a shot at her title. <strong>(B- 71)</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="wqgw26H.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/wqgw26H.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <strong>THE MAIN EVENT!</strong></p><p> <img alt="FEuIsko.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/FEuIsko.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="hpDijOp.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/hpDijOp.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><strong>VS</strong> <img alt="kBd0dNb.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/kBd0dNb.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="rSbrBqM.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/rSbrBqM.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> <strong>SHAWN MICHAELS & SYXX vs. THE FRANCHISE PLAYERS</strong></p><p> A big main event following the very personal opening minutes of tonight’s show. Shawn Michaels and Syxx have form in main event action and were clearly the fan favourites going in, but they might have underestimated the drive of Shane Douglas and Lance Storm who certainly had a point to prove. The Franchise Players jumped their opponents the moment the opening bell rung and quickly took Michaels out of action by hitting him with a double suplex onto the steel steps at ringside! With Michaels hurt Syxx was faced with a dangerous two on one situation as he attempted to fend off both Douglas & Storm, who proved their clinical brtuality as they worked over The X-Factor with crisp technical holds, violent power moves and great double team offence.</p><p> </p><p> It seemed like every time Syxx got the upper hand he was immediately cut back down to size again, the numbers game proving to be highly effective. It wasn’t until a flurry of offence that saw him hit a spinning kick to Storm, a high roundhouse to Douglas and then a flying suicide dive to both men when they retreated to the outside did the tables begin to turn. Syxx held out long enough for Shawn Michaels to somehow climb up onto the ring apron and made the hot tag to the Heartbreak Kid! Michaels went crazy as he took the fight to both Douglas and Storm, overcoming them with his signature offence. Michaels connected with a massive Sweet Chin Music to Douglas to send him tumbling out through the ropes before connecting with a second superkick to Storm who stumbled straight into the X-Factor Facebuster from Syxx who got the cover and the three count!</p><p> <strong>RATING:</strong> B (78)</p><p> </p><p> Shawn Michaels and Syxx had picked up the victory tonight, but as the bell rang…</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="zSBCnYR.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/zSBCnYR.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="5f4f6cU.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/5f4f6cU.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Kevin Nash and Scott Hall spoiled the party, Nash hitting Michaels with a big boot and Hall grabbing Syxx and throwing him unceremoniously out of the ring into a heap on the floor outside. Nash lifted Michaels up and dropped him backfirst with the Jackknife Powerbomb! Hall told Michaels that he might have found himself a friend, but that it doesn’t matter because he’s looking up at the biggest threat to his career he’s ever faced. “You want us? You got us. Capital Carnage buddy, me and Nash against you and your little friend. Just be careful what you wish for eh, might be the last thing you ever do.” Hall dropped the microphone on Michaels prone chest, he and Kevin Nash having sent a message tonight to Shawn Michaels and Syxx that they might have evened the odds, but that doesn’t mean they stand a chance.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>RATING:</strong> A (89)</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="wqgw26H.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/wqgw26H.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> <strong>SHOW RATING:</strong> B (80)</p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="P9iChYi.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/P9iChYi.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> <strong>WWF Sunday Night HEAT, April 1997, Week Three</strong></p><p> Attendance: 15,148 at The Ford Centre, Oklahoma</p><p> <strong>Commentary Team: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45418" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>1. WWF SmackDown, April 1997, Week Three

Attendance: 12,306 at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa

Commentary Team: Joey Styles, Mike Tenay & Bobby Heenan

1. SmackDown kicked off right away with some exciting tag team action as the speed of The Hardy Boyz clashed with the sheer strength of the Disciples of Apocalypse. Both teams looked impressive and this one could have gone either way but in the end The Hardyz connected with the Twist of Fate / Swanton Bomb combo to put the bigger DoA away. (B- / 74)

- The Hardy Boyz were joined in the ring by Chris Jericho following the match, who warned The Rock, Edge & Christian that now he had two guys with him who wanted to fight them as badly as he did since Edge & Christian have ‘their’ WWF Intercontinental Tag Team Championship. Jericho warned the trio to watch their backs because the tables are turning baby! (B- / 76)

- Marlena caught up with Adam Clarke backstage to get a few words about D-Generation X. Clarke exploded, calling DX punks who don’t know the first thing about respect, but that’s fine, because he’s got no problem beating it into them. Clarke said DX is going to be short lived, because he’s about to drop a bomb on them. (B- / 76)

2. With the WWF Cruiserweight Champion Jushin Thunder Liger watching on Jerry Lynn bested Juventud Guerrera in high flying Cruiserweight action following the Cradle Piledriver. Lynn made sure to take some time to cockily badmouth Liger throughout the match, trying to goad him into a fight, but Liger refused to rise to it. (C- / 55)

- Backstage William Regal had a run-in with the man he beat in the first round of the WWF Global Championship tournament, Dean Malenko. Regal took great pleasure in reminding Malenko that he said he could beat him, well clearly that wasn’t true, was it? Malenko got in Regal’s face, telling him that if he hadn’t blindsided him with a pair of brass knuckles then the result would have been different. Malenko called Regal a disgrace, telling him that he doesn’t deserve the Intercontinental Championship, let alone the Global Championship, and that he’d take it from him for the good of the WWF. (B- / 75)

- Roddy Piper stopped by the locker room of Randy Savage to give him a few words ahead of tonight’s main event. Piper told him that he drafted him to SmackDown to give him a fair shot at getting another run at the top and that tonight’ll probably be the biggest challenge to that, but he believes in Savage and knows he can come out on top. They were interrupted by D-Generation X, who took great pleasure in mocking Savage and Piper, telling the two “old men” to leave things to people who could wrestle without having to worry about a hip replacement after. DX walked off laughing, leaving both Savage and Piper less than happy. (B / 82)

3. Roddy Piper made a point of SmackDown being a chance for everyone to impress, and nothing exemplified that more than the match between The Patriot and Hakushi. Both men have kind of fallen to the wayside, but tonight The Patriot picked up a win that could change that thanks to a big top rope elbow. (C+ / 67)

- As the commentary trio talked about the first quarter-final in the Global Championship tournament a camera caught sight of Sting up in the rafters. With The Undertaker seemingly not in attendance tonight just who could the illusive Sting be watching tonight? (B / 80)

4. The Rock and Cactus Jack went toe to toe in the first WWF Global Championship quarter final match, and you could tell instantly that these two men are going to be very important for the future of this brand and the WWF. Both men went all out but just as Cactus seemed to have the match won Edge & Christian made their presence known… only for Chris Jericho & The Hardy Boyz to hit the ring and run them off through the crowd! The distraction was enough though as The Rock hit Cactus with a Rock Bottom as he turned around and quickly covered him for the victory! (B / 82)

The match is over, when suddenly Taz slides into the ring. Mike Awesome and Scott Norton appear from the crowd next, climbing into the ring as well, surrounding The Rock and the still downed Cactus Jack. Paul Heyman emerges onto the ramp, slowly making his way down to the ring while The Rock looks around him, ready for a fight. Heyman enters the ring, then signals to The Rock that he’s welcome to leave. Rocky, hesitant, takes him up on the offer, leaving Cactus Jack alone with Extreme Rising. That’s when they pounce, Norton and Awesome viciously attacking Cactus, both men planting him into the mat with a trio of violent powerbombs. Taz latched on to the already unconscious, locking him in the Tazmission and choking him out as security finally rushed down to the ring to break up what could only be described as a mugging. Paul Heyman directed Extreme Rising to leave, the damage well and truly having being done, with absolutely no explanation as to why they did it.

- Marlena caught up with Bret Hart backstage ahead of tonight’s big main event, and the former WWF World Champion had plenty to say. Bret said that he’s faced Randy Savage before and the last time they squared off, for the WWF Championship no less, it was the Hitman who came out on top. Bret said that tonight would be no different because as far as he’s concerned he’s not facing a legend, he’s facing just another person who’s going to fall to the wayside on his path to becoming the champion. (B+ / 87)

5. Things between Rick Steiner and Chris Benoit have quickly become personal, and that animosity was on full display in this hard hitting match between the two. Things soon got way out of hand as the two men took the fight outside the ring and had no interest in getting back inside it, leading to a double count out as security rushed to the ring to break them up. (B / 77)

- Another vignette aired for SmackDown’s newest superstar, Val Venis. This time Val was in his own bathroom, about to step inside the shower. Val said he’d had a very “hard” day at work, but now he’s going to refresh himself because next week he’s coming to SmackDown to get sweaty in another way. “Hello ladies, daddy’s home.” Val dropped the towel as he stepped inside the shower, the words ‘Val Venis arrives on SmackDown next week’ appearing on the shower wall through steam. (E+ / 35)

- Adam Clarke was walking backstage when he was suddenly jumped by D-Generation X! Triple H and the New Age Outlaws took Clarke down, putting the boots to him and warning him not to start something he can’t finish. Luckily for Clarke Rob Van Dam appeared, wielding a steel chair, and ran DX off before too much damage could be done. (B+ / 83)

THE MAIN EVENT!

WWF GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER-FINAL MATCH

BRET HART vs. RANDY SAVAGE

Easily the biggest main event in SmackDown’s short history, this match was truly a clash of legends as two former WWF World Champions squared off. Both men have a lot in common right now. Randy is looking to prove that he can still hang with the top talent that the World Wrestling Federation has to offer while Bret feels he has to bounce right back after losing his WWF Championship to his brother Owen at WrestleMania. As such there was a real sense of desperation from both men as they had everything to lose here. Both men might be creeping up in age but they’ve sustained what got them to the main event in the first place, as Bret’s technical prowess clashed with Randy’s strength and heart.

Bret found himself on the backfoot early on as he struggled with Savage’s surprisingly quick assault, the Macho Man trying to put Bret away early knowing full well that he’d struggle the longer the match went on. Unfortunately Bret’s a master of holding out for the right opening and he did that here as he caught Savage with a dropkick when the Macho Man was coming off the top rope and then immediately went to work on the back. Bret’s unrelenting offence made the match more difficult for Savage as time went on as he found himself moving slower. He got in a late flurry thanks to a vicious clothesline and went up top for the Savage Elbowdrop but took too long getting up there because of his back and when he came flying off Bret had rolled out of the way. The Hitman quickly locked in the Sharpshooter and despite a valiant effort to hold on Savage was forced to tap out, ending his hopes of becoming the first WWF Global Champion while The Hitman marches on.

WINNER: Bret Hart
