The Climb [RMW, CVerse]

Recommended Posts

Solid show all around despite the main event rating with the injury and chemistry issues. The DQ ending gave the baby face the win without the title change. I like that since it was Law’s first match. When does he get a rematch? Maybe he should have to jump through a couple of hoops (aka The other members of the Fallen).

Looking forward to the build to what should be a big Anniversary Show

<p>Really enjoyed catching up on this, once again the narratives really stand out as brilliant. Can we get a post of you singing the entirety of 'Even the Devil gets the blues' please?</p><p> </p><p>

In all seriousness though it would be cool if the album caught off in the c-verse and CWL suddenly had a bona fide music star on the roster. Although I imagine he'd then chose music full time over wrestling.</p>

You really don't want a post of me singing even a snippet of one of the songs from Even the Devil Gets The Blues -- it would break your computer speakers, your headphones, your eardrums, heck... My singing is so bad it might hurt your other senses.

In other news, the last show of the 2023 year is coming. It's been run and is just waiting for me to add pictures and format it, which I should be able to do tonight. This week had back-to-back curriculum nights at the school I work for and because of my role, meant I didn't leave the job until close to 8PM each night and by the time I get home and get some dinner I haven't had the energy or desire to do anything other than sit on the couch and watch some TV before passing out.

Has your company momentum decreased in the past 6 months or so?

I’m noticing a lot of your guys are getting much worse grades for solo promos than in the past.

We lost a little bit of momentum from Christmas Chaos being so underwhelming. December, on the whole, wasn't a great month. We had a couple of lackluster SNSM's and the lackluster Christmas Chaos that we have to battle back from.

For the third year in a row, Continental Wrestling League will start off the year with a two-hour special and a 30-Man Rumble to decide who will challenge Torment for the North American Heavyweight Championship at the Eighth Anniversary showcase. Last year, "The Cornerstone" Riley McManus won and went on to beat Spencer Spade. The previous year, Matty Faith won and went on to challenge Spencer Spade for the championship. Hall of Fame Induction Returns

This year, the night before the Eight Anniversary at the same reception honoring the receipients of the 2023 CWL Year End Awards, we will see the Hall of Fame grow in size. It has been several years since any inductions have taken place.

It has been announced that one tag team will be inducted -- though both members will also be getting credit for their solo careers in CWL, and two more men will be inducted. Both of those men achieved success in the singles and tag ranks.

Who do you think will be the four men inducted to the Hall of Fame this year? Let us know!

Wow, America didn't do so well in general in 2023 - what was it, two end of year awards?

I struggle to keep up with this diary, but I love catching up! :D Gutting that the CC main event flopped, though, especially with it clearly being set up for a return match down the line...

That's showbiz sometimes! Fortunately, Torment is all healed up -- he was healed on like, the second day of 2024, so he won't be hampered by his knee any longer.

And nope. 2023 was a year dominated by SOTBPW -- except for Announcer of the Year! Go Lee, bringing some year end love to us.

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="77R420p.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/77R420p.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

I sat behind a desk that I both loved and loathed. The pages of the calendar had just turned to a new year and I was looking at a bright financial forecast, a bright future for my company and I should be feeling great about it, but at the same time, I wasn’t a young man anymore. I was sixty-three years old and had spent forty-five years of my life dedicated to the business that I loved. I felt something like Washington at the end of his Presidency when he wrote, “ am unconscious of intentional error, I am nevertheless too sensible of my defects not to think it probable that I may have committed many errors. Whatever they may be, I fervently beseech the Almighty to avert or mitigate the evils to which they may tend. I shall also carry with me the hope that my country will never cease to view them with indulgence; and that, after forty five years of my life dedicated to its service with an upright zeal, the faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion, as myself must soon be to the mansions of rest.”</p><p> </p><p>

I did not think I was going to die soon. I also did not think I was going to retire soon, but I did contemplate it from time to time. Like on snowy January days when I was sitting at a desk in a building miles away from my wife. I could be home with her, enjoying the fruits of our mutual labor. I could be spending more time with Cora. I could garden. Not that that was likely. Today I just felt old. I felt every one of my forty-five years in the business. Every bump. </p><p> </p><p>

I took a drink from the steaming cup of coffee on my desk. We had just finished our best year in business. Lee Bambino was honored as the best announcer in wrestling. Spencer Spade, Riley McManus, Ross Henry, and Ash Campbell all finished in the top two hundred on the yearly 500 Best Wrestlers list. Anticipation for the eighth-anniversary show was incredibly high. Last year had provided us with our five best matches ever and sixteen of our best twenty matches. It was without a doubt our best year critically and commercially. </p><p> </p><p>

Yet here I was. Feeling some kind of way about my career. Truth be told, I missed being in the ring. There was no way I was going to get back in the ring, but I missed it. I missed *feeling* the roar of the crowd, not just hearing it. I missed being under the bright, hot lights. I missed running the ropes. I missed the sweat and the spit and the blood and my body slamming down into the wood. I missed tagging in Joel. I missed being in sync. I did not get in wrestling to promote and book. Sure, I liked promoting and booking. There was something satisfying in it. There was something rewarding about seeing a sold-out crowd and knowing that I promoted it. Or getting the ratings back and seeing over a million people were tuning in to see my company’s weekly television show. It was gratifying. I could see guys like Riley break out in a way he would have never if I didn’t give him the opportunity. All of that felt great, but when you were a wrestler you wanted to stay a wrestler.</p><p> </p><p>

So today I was unhappy. A surly, grouchy man behind his desk that was thankful that the office was empty and everything was quiet. I could just be miserable all by my damn self. I could wax poetic and look at our upcoming house show cards. I leaned back against the leather of my chair. My pen in my hand. Even though most of the work was done on the computer, I liked to hold a pen. I liked the feel of it. I could spin it between my fingers as I thought.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="6D57NFv.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/6D57NFv.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

“Dad.” A voice said and I looked up. Marjorie stood there. She was not supposed to be here today. She was off. I looked at her. It was hard for me to remember that she was married now. She had just gotten married at Christmas to KC. She was a grown woman and not the little girl that would try to stay up late when I was home from the road just to spend time with me. She’d always wanted to spend time with me. More than Bobby and more than Matilda -- and yes, both my daughter’s names started with M just like my wife and yes I did that on purpose. Marjorie was the oldest. My first-born. As a father, you’re not supposed to have favorites, but you always do. Marjorie was my favorite. She was the most like me, except with the mind of her mother. She was also the one who was here in Denver. Bobby was off stationed in Australia, he met a woman at a beach down there and was enjoying being young and handsome and with a uniform. Matilda had just left to go back to school. She was studying Linguistics at MIT and was loving it. I was happy she was enjoying college. She was sharp as a tack but incredibly quiet. Had always been quiet.</p><p> </p><p>

“Dad.” Marjorie said again and I was reminded that I had not answered her. I had gotten lost in my thoughts.</p><p> </p><p>

“Yes?” I asked her. </p><p> </p><p>

“You got a second?”</p><p> </p><p>

This could not be good. “Of course.”</p><p> </p><p>

She came into the room. She had not taken her coat off. Her long, dark hair cascaded down her shoulders and she looked at me with the same eyes her mother had. “So. Um.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Go ahead. Say it.” I said. Was she leaving? Had she accepted an offer with a TV station? Was Eisen or Packer trying to poach her? Was Hollywood?</p><p> </p><p>

“I’m pregnant.” She said and I stared at her. She’d been pregnant before. She had given birth to a beautiful daughter. “I haven’t told Kevin yet.” She said nervously.</p><p> </p><p>

Something was off. She shouldn’t be nervous to tell her husband. Excited, sure. But nervous? “Why not?” I asked her and motioned for her to sit down. She did not listen. Stubborn like her mother too.</p><p> </p><p>

“When I was pregnant with Cora…” She trailed off for a moment. I didn’t interrupt. She’d find the words with time. “When I was pregnant with Cora, we had talked about that if we had a second kid I would quit working full-time. We thought it might be nice if there were two babies if one of us was home more often than not and I could be at home and write and do some editing while the kids napped.”</p><p> </p><p>

“But you don’t want to quit working full-time.”</p><p> </p><p>

“No. I don’t. I’m scared that if I tell him he’s going to push me to do that and I don’t want to do that Dad. I love working. I’m good at my job. I’m twenty-eight and I not only direct a television show that is seen by over a million people each week, I direct Pay Per View. I oversee a whole staff. I love coming to work. I don’t want to stop.” She said. She was looking to me for advice. To tell her what to do. Your children never stop needing you. They’ll pretend they don’t need you anymore. They may not need you as often, but every now and then they need mom or dad to help them.</p><p> </p><p>

“Is Kevin mean?”</p><p> </p><p>

“Of course not.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Does he yell?”</p><p> </p><p>

“Only when the Braves are losing.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Does he love you?”</p><p> </p><p>

“More than anything.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Then he’s not going to be mad at you. I know you don’t want to disappoint him. We never want to disappoint the person we marry, but Kevin understands you love your job. You’re still a great mom. You’ll continue to be a great mom. He’ll support your decision.” I told her. It was my job to tell her. To remind her that she married a genuinely good guy. He was a nerd, sure, but he had bought her her dream home. He had supported every decision she wanted to make. He wasn’t going to suddenly do an about-face and become an asshole or something.</p><p> </p><p>

She breathed a heavy sigh. “I know that you’re right, but I’m still scared. I shouldn’t be scared. I know that. I’m just nervous. We had a plan. I want to change that plan.”</p><p> </p><p>

“So talk to him about it. Calmly. Explain why.” I told her in between drinks of my coffee. “He’ll support you. He always does.”</p><p> </p><p>

She nodded her head and breathed again. “Thanks for listening dad.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Any time, punk.”</p><p> </p><p>

She turned and started to leave.</p><p> </p><p>

“Margie.” I called after her and she stopped and turned. “Congratulations. I can’t wait to be a grandad again.”</p><p> </p><p>

She just laughed and shook her head. “I love you.”</p><p> </p><p>

“I love you too, kid.”</p><p> </p><p>

Maybe today was not so bad after all.</p>

LB: Hello and welcome to another exciting and thrill-packed episode of Saturday Night Slammasters. We are coming to you from the sould out Missouri State Armory for the very first episode of Saturday Night Slammasters here in 2024! What an episode we have for you tonight. There are two New Year’s Rumbles on the format tonight -- that’s right, TWO. Because of this, NCTV has given us a full two hours for tonight’s show.

RDJ: They did and I’m incredibly happy they did. The Women’s New Year’s Rumble will start the show and the male’s version will close the show. By the end of tonight, we will know who is challenging for the respective top titles for their gender at the Eighth Anniversary.

LB: Tonight is an amazing opportunity for many competitors. Who will step up? Who will walk out with a championship opportunity? Plus the Television Championship is on the line. Let’s not waste any more time.

“The Headhunter” Jeffery Aroma is in the ring with a microphone. He has vanquished every member of Bowen Services that has stood in front of him. He has been on a warpath to right the wrongs he has done in his career and he has added many heads to his trophy case. But there is one head that he is missing. That is the crown jewel in Lisa Bowen’s fiefdom. Spencer Spade. Spade’s suspension is up and Aroma wants him at the Eighth Anniversary Special.

Spade comes out with Lisa Bowen. He looks refreshed from his sixty-day banishment. He lets Jeffery Aroma know that while yes, he has been successful so far, Spencer Spade is a whole different breed of animal. There is a reason that he is the Supreme Star. There is a reason he is the measuring stick for what it means to be a true sports entertainer and not just a professional wrestler. Spencer tells Jeffery that at The Eighth Anniversary show he is going to teach Jeffery Aroma the difference.

Rick Law is backstage. He came to CWL to administer justice, he came here to be a beacon of light in the darkness that the Fallen was swallowing the CWL. At Christmas Chaos, he knew he was going to beat Torment but Torment did not respect the authority of the official and it got him disqualified. Law mentions that he knows that there is the New Year’s Rumble tonight to name a contender to Torment, but he’s spoken with “Pistol” Pete and at the Eighth Anniversary it will actually be a triple threat match!
