Cverse 2020 predictions

Recommended Posts

Hey all if there's one thing I love its speculating on a story and trying to think about where things are going so I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we put our predictions for what the state of the Cverse will be come April 30th. I'll get the ball rolling by dropping some of my big ones.

I think at least 1 new company will be in the COTT but I also think OLLIE will have outgrown the Confederation and will have struck out on it's own.

In desperate need of a youth movement I can see USPW buying out a smaller company (my thoughts is MAW) to use for its dojo and as a developmental affiliate. Especially given dev companies are now playable it wouldn't cause too many issues.

I think TCW will have dropped firmly out of the push to be one of the biggest companies in the US and will actually be on its last legs like late-stage AWA in real life.

And finally I think the new Indian region will be spearheaded by a former top tier worker, now in their mid to late 40s looking to hit it big in a new market with a company where they can book themselves to the top. (Maybe even Tommy Cornell)

I predict SNP will either have gone out of business (probably with Mark Carnie embezzling all the money from it) or have been taken over by someone who takes it seriously (with Carnie either cashing out or going to prison).

With the changes to broadcasters, I think there's a strong chance that one or more companies will have their own broadcaster (it's kind of weird none do in 2016).

I think either QAW or AAA will have a big increase in popularity and either be Cult (or whatever the equivalent new size is. Medium? I forget) or close to it. Probably AAA. It says in the description in 2016 that the new owner might be looking to expand.

When it comes to India, given that there's a whopping 1 Indian wrestler in the database, I think there's a pretty strong chance Kashmir Singh is a major player in the new area, especially since he had recently fallen out with his employer in the 2016 database.

Given that Ryland never seemed particularly enamoured with Hardcore Wrestling (IRL he wasn't that big a fan of ECW), I could see him scrapping PSW given that Hardcore wrestling isn't so much a thing IRL outside of Game Changer Wrestling. If i recall right when I asked him years ago why did he scrap DAVE despite it popularity with the fanbase (a DAVE diary was the most popular diary here on the forums in the 08/09 era) he said it was him making a bit of a statement on, in his mind, the inevitability of promotions like ECW collapsing and not ever making it to a stable level. So given he scrapped DAVE on that reality-based viewpoint, I could see him scrapping PSW and saying it was a victim of changing tastes in wrestling.

CGC has to be close to the end, right? If not dead, then severely wounded.

The roster has been stagnant for several games in a row, and Alex DeColt's slide into madness has been well-foreshadowed. The Canadian scene is in dire need of a change, and if one of the Big Two has to go, it's surely CGC.

I'm predicting it's gone, with it's roster scattered. Either ACPW or 4C move up to an alternative rival to NOTBPW (with modern 'television' presentation on streaming) and Europe or India getting the new Sports Entertainment promotion of CGC's scale. Alex retires. Ricky moves on. Jack is semi-retired, wondering if this is the end. A DeColt free-agent.

That seems very unlikely. :p But it might be a Bollywood star. Seems like the only way for it to get some traction.

I don't know about any tier movements and will say most companies will stay at the same level. Maybe QAW and AAA will do some sort of joint event or merge into a cult promotion, but it seems unlikely as well.

Something interesting might happen with the DeColts, and with TCW as they are bought by a toy company.

I had the idea last week for a prediction game but I didn't want to make a new thread for it. Here's some of my questions:

- Is USPW still the #1 fed?

- Has Fox Mask been on a Japanese tour or excursion?

- Has J-Ro closed out her career with AAA or another promotion (OLLIE? CZCW?)

- Has TCW changed their product significantly following the recent takeover?

etc...

and of course:

- Is it finally revealed what the TC in TCW really stands for?

I think TCW will be in this weird rebound era, where theyve last the number 3 spot, maybe to 21CW or SOTBPW, but have a new (maybe loyal) roster that can easily take them back to that position.

AAA will be either near or at Cult equivalent levels, maybe their own stream services, i think alot of smaller companies will be using thoses, like CZCW and ZEN (if they aren't dead)

Another British company will debut, maybe in the 21CW "free" markets of Wales or Ireland.

CGC will be in a tight spot, but I have this head canon they manage to pull a super non-DeColt babyface out their hat, which if booked correctly can make for a nice comeback for them, or flop hard depending on the circumstances.

companies leave the modern Japan movement, especially 5SSW, as there is literally no reason THEY would have joined seeing as they dominate the Joshi scene already.

I think we maybe could lead into a massive swerve, like maybe USPW got hit with a big scandal and is number 2 (I like the idea of Hal Harvard or one of the FBI guys getting signed and discovering steroids are rampant) or maybe some shocks moves, like champagne lover leaving SOTBPW for America, not realistic predictions, but ones that would make you go, "OH SNAP DIDNT EXPECT THAT"

I think there will be an Indian Giant wrestler ala Great Khali who is being used in both India and the United States (by either USPW or SWF) to help one of them cash in the Indian market with a monster Indian wrestler that can be hugely popular in both regions.

The biggest surprise for me in 2016 was the fall of SWF, which ended up being almost prophetic in a way for WWE, so I want to see how much of WWE's current issues are mirrored or echoed in SWF. Has Richard Eisen finally been pushed out in favor of his son (or possibly even Jack Bruce?), or is he determined to keep his stranglehold until the end? Did they get a massive influx of money from a controversial foreign investor? How many of their mid sized to major acts are looking for a way out? I would speculate about an AEW-style upstart promotion, but I think the US in TEW already has too many top promotions for another one to suddenly spring up and be successful, but I could be wrong. I know these aren't really predictions, so I'll say that I expect SWF to have taken at least one more big hit, possibly the departure of a major star or two, or to be in the middle of a financial crisis. I also think TCW will either be completely dead, or in the middle of a surprise resurgence.

<p>I'm hoping there are some MAJOR shakeups, as we've seen how much can change in a 4 year period. </p><p> </p><p>

I'm not expecting the level of change we've had in the real world, but something like a few major stars jumping ship (including some loyal Japanese guys, a la Shingo and Ishimori), 1 or 2 companies going down several sizes, and 1 or 2 companies rising several sizes.</p>

<p>My biggest bet is that it'll be SWF who falls back in the 3 way race for the US after project lullaby finally strikes. Either that or someone from that group will be signed and there will be a narrative of them getting hit included early on a lot like the tsunami that hits Japan. USPW and SOTB will take a good chunk of their stars. TCW will lose a few too but will also gain a few good workers from SWF and be fine, although in need of a influx of new talent/pushing new talent</p><p> </p><p>

Speaking of Japan, one of the major promotions there will be dead and I think one of Golden and Black canvas will be in serious trouble.</p>

<p>Which companies do you think will debut between 2016 and the start of 2020? I can't see another Southwest company opening, especially ELITE given how close its product is to GSW/IPW. Although I feel like there are parallels to the "East Coast Wars."</p><p> </p><p>

One of the Hawaiian promotions are definitely opening up. KANZEN is my pick. Either a former CZCW wrestler or Jimmy Stratosphere. Maybe High Flyin Hawaiian pulls a Mikey James and goes home to wrestle as figurehead.</p><p> </p><p>

Japan needs more touring promotions and JCW seems like a perfect roster for Konine to open up. It can be BHOTWG's version of GCG's BCG.</p>

Sure they can push Jay Chord, Mighty Mo and Eddie Peak to the top, but with likely Johnson retiring, losing a Rocky Golden, Sammy Bach or Aaron Andrews could be catastrophic.</p>

<p>The two companies I'm most curious about are CGC and SWF. While any company may rise or fall or be significantly changed in 2020 due to unforseen circumstances, those two are almost required by their situations to be shaken up in some way.</p><p> </p><p>

I'll start with CGC. There's no way the company rebounds without a change in ownership and a major new talent (and the latter can't happen without the former as no game-changing star would continue to work for Alex). So here's two possible situations:</p><p> </p><p>

Scenerio One ("the good one"): Steve DeColt returns to CGC as its saviour after Alex drinks himself to death (or at least out of the business). While he's too old to save the company as a wrestler, he'd make a <em>fantastic</em> authority figure and occasional "legend" worker. Possibly he brings over some friends from NOTB to revitalize the roster. The company won't have recovered all the way to 2013 levels, but there will be optimism and potential for growth.</p><p> </p><p>

Scenario Two ("the bad one"): The DeColts finally go full Von Erich and embrace further tragedy. Ricky dies of an overdose or in a car crash. Alex drinks himself to oblivion (as above), and only Jack is left, a sad, lonely man running a sad dying shell of CGC that can barely hold on to Regional (or whatever the new equivalent is called) size.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Now let's look at SWF, who we last saw falling to #2 for the first time in decades. Their biggest problem, as I saw it, was a failure to develop new main eventers who could adequately replace their retiring veterans. This situation can't go on, and since you <em>can't</em> have Jack Bruce as your figurehead in 2020 (he may still be able to perform, but he won't be able to carry the company), something's got to give. Again, I'll postulate two scenarios:</p><p> </p><p>

Scenario One ("the good one"): The company rebounds with one or more big signings (Champagne Lover? Rocky Golden? Nicky Champion?) and with one or more of the CVerse's perpetual bridesmaids finally blossiming into a superstar. The company will remain #2 (as I don't see USPW falling in 2020), but will back in the fight in a big way.</p><p> </p><p>

Scenario Two ("the bad one"): SWF falls to #3 in America after Bruce retires (or massively cuts back his schedule) and the company still can't develop or retain bonafide main eventers. Possibly there will be backstage turmoil as well with Eisen forced out by Operation Lullabye. If the latter happens, the company may fall even further than third.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

I expect USPW and TCW to hold position, although as I said before, pretty much any company could rise or fall significantly if something unexpected happens, but then, who can predict the unexpected?</p>

I also think Operation Lullaby will reach its conclusion, but it will either be a dud or get its funding pulled for being a ridiculous boondoggle. The idea of such a dumb plan actually being successful is just a bridge too far. Not sure where the three relevant workers would go in this scenario. Probably they'd all leave the business, but one or more might "go native".

Burning Hammer has gone full gaijin and has assembled one of the very best rosters of the history with ones like Cornell, Champagne Lover and so on.

Meanwhile PGHW has become the house of pure puro with Kikkawa and some of the best japanese talent, unhappy with the BH booking

GCG has one of the best young talents since the golden days of Maeda.

Oh, I know it is not what it will happen anyway, but I will mod the DB to make this happen
