Hello and welcome to a joint venture between four dynasty writers. The Coalition centers on four players running four independent companies based in North America. The goal? Keep independent pro wrestling alive and build four companies with their own unique identies. We will work together in an alliance [the North America Wrestling Coalition].The writers partaking in this Coalition have accumulated multiple Diary of the Month and Diary of the Year awards. This diary will also have a narrative focus while juggling four promotions. While our first joint venture, EMLL, did not get off the ground, we have spent significant more time getting this set up and working through what we want to do. It also allows us each the complete creative freedom within our own companies while also having to work together to make Coalition decisions. We are each running, at least at the beginning, monthly schedules. One show a month. This allows us to have a Coalition show each week and also keeps the schedule easy on each of us so we can move through the game.

The other big thing of note, this is set in the '05 database. There are a couple of modifications (Sam Strong taking USPW over earlier than cannon, each company starting with $250,000 and Riley McManus debuting a few months earlier than cannon). Outside of that, we have made no changes to the default 05 database.

Historian, playing as Rip Chord, controlling Mid Atlantic Wrestling.

Dalton, playing as The Stomper, controlling New York City Wrestling

Sco_xY2Jx, playing as Sam Strong, controlling United States Pro Wrestling

falling_star, playing as Cliff Anderson, controlling Coastal Zone Championship Wrestling.

We are the NAWC. We are the Coalition. We will save pro wrestling.

THE STATE OF INDEPENDENT WRESTLING, DECEMBER 2005

Wrestling today is not the wrestling your parents grew up watching; heck, it’s probably not what you grew up watching, dear reader.

Evolution is inevitable, but is that change in professional wrestling a blessing or a curse? Long gone are the days of regionalized territories for now is the time of the National powerhouse. Not all that long ago, fans in Florida did not know the stars of the Texas Wrestling League, and, likewise, fans in Texas couldn’t pick an All-American Florida Wrestling star out of a lineup. Nearly every region in the United States had a promotion at home, along with a roster of stars and a handful of championship belts

Of course, Richard Eisen and his Supreme Wrestling Federation put an end to this when he became an early adopter of the cable television network strategy we see employed by so many promotions today. Eisen and the SWF saw what cable could do for pro wrestling and decided to cash in, taking the most popular stars from each region and putting together a roster that was the cream of the crop. With a nation’s worth of stars at their disposal, the SWF made their way to cable television and has remained there to this day, now airing on America-Sports-1.

While that wasn’t quite a death knell for independent wrestling, it certainly put to bed the territorial system that had come before. The early-and-mid-90’s saw countless promotions come and go, either ill-equipped to take on the SWF or clinging to old school values that were now seen as outdated. But then came a gleam of hope from the east coast in the form of what we now refer to as the East Coast Wars: several exciting promotions sprang up and set the indie world alight. New stars, some with a loudly spoken intention to buck the system and stay away from Eisen’s money, began to emerge and suddenly there was talent wrestling fans craved to see in a live capacity. As if by design, however, this wouldn’t last very long; Danger and Violence Extreme emerged victorious from the East Coast Wars as the sole surviving promotion among those involved.

And then came…

Wait...

Speaking of DAVE, is there any wrestling federation out there right now doing more damage to the indies than Phil Vibert and company? Embracing everything they ever hated about SWF, the Extreme indie is doing everything it can to position itself to make the Big Two, a Big Three. Signing exclusive deals as we start the month of December that cut off much-needed talent, like Acid in particular, from other companies; how long until they come calling for someone like Joey Minnesota or Mean Jean Cattley?

Where was I? Oh, yeah.

And then came J.K. Stallings.

In the late 1990s, the teenage billionaire, enriched by the sale of a software company he had founded, formed the Hollyweird Grappling Company, now known as Total Championship Wrestling. If Richard Eisen and the SWF had been a disease for indie wrestling, Stallings and HGC were the plague. Nearly every remaining star on the independent scene was signed up for HGC’s melting pot of a roster, and talent pools went dry all over the country once again. The independent scene became flooded with stars of bygone eras who were unable to work the modern style, and teeming with bitter veterans who felt snubbed by the “Big Two.”

Unsigned American wrestlers flocked to Japan and Mexico, either looking to break through or reinvent themselves completely. But with spots abroad becoming a hot commodity, there wasn’t enough work to go around and the de facto tentpole of the American indie scene became old school promotion New York City Wrestling. NYCW was founded in 1988, and 2001 brought the American indies more of the same with the founding of United State Pro Wrestling by Danny Jillefski. Some of the more hardcore internet fans were nearly frothing at the mouth during Jillefski’s public fallout with Richard Eisen over the news that he was founding a new promotion. That passionate desire for something new would go unanswered, however, when Jillefski introduced the nostalgia-drenched USPW as his brainchild.

And now we arrive at the present, December 2005. There’s no easy way to say this, dear readers… indie wrestling is on life support. There are some diamonds in the rough, but, boy, is there a lot of rough! My hope is that, as with any natural cycle, fans will want more than what the Big Two are giving them and will go back to looking at their smaller, local, independent companies.

I don’t mean any of my earlier remarks to disparage NYCW and USPW-- both companies do a more-than-adequate job of providing the type of show they promote. Not to mention, old school as they may be, NYCW is the home of one of the hottest indie wrestlers in the country right now, Joey Minnesota. They’ve been steadily in business, producing near-weekly shows, for almost 20 years. USPW has grown steadily since their inception, and are set to offer Made in America later this month in front of a nearly sold out crowd at the Hunstville Fairgrounds. Again, that’s not to mention Johnny Bloodstone, perhaps the most underrated talent in the United States right now.

But, for this internet writer who loves professional wrestling, there are also other bright spots to be found. The advent of the internet age and video sharing means that lucha libre and puro are more readily available for American fans than ever before-- believe me, you want to checkout a PRIDE Koiso match if you get the chance and you need to see Champagne Lover in action. But the internet age is also bringing a little known California promotion their day in the sun: the San Diego-based Coastal Zone Combat Wrestling. If you're tired of watching a soap opera on TV every week, this no-frills promotion gets it done.

A favorite of tape traders since the early 90s, CZCW has been the breeding ground for a lot of guys filling out the midcard of the Big Two and a good chunk of HGC’s now-defunct cruiserweight division. Trust me, a CZCW show is unlike anything you’ve ever seen; they offer a fusion of lucha libre acrobatics from their neighbors to the south and hard-hitting violence from across the pond in Japan. The result is beautiful-- you’ll see combinations of talent you never thought possible competing in a variety of gimmick matches and adrenaline-soaked barnburners. Oh, and did I mention the average weight of the CZCW roster is probably 100 lbs. less than your average SWF meathead. You won’t find a Runaway Train or a BLZ Bubb in CZCW, but you see The Fly Boys untethered and Coastal Zone Champion Snap Dragon absolutely murder people with his Dragon’s Breath finisher.

You want another bright spot? Mid Atlantic Wrestling. I can’t believe I’m saying that after their lackluster debut offering last month, but who am I to doubt the legendary Rip Chord? His eye for talent is undeniable, and his roster of trainees and indie standouts is unmatched. Have you seen his protege, Antonio, deliver a DDT? It’s like a step back in time.

And then, there’s Steve Flash… I’m not sure if he’s a step back in time, a leap into the future, or very much living in the present… but, damn, am I impressed. Don’t hand the man a microphone, but don’t miss him in the squared circle, either. The man is clearly deserving of a contract with the Big Two, but he’s made clear ever since his Rapid Pro Wrestling days that he has no interest in either of them. The man loves pro wrestling, and I love him for it.

So, there you have it, dead readers… the sad state of affairs that is indie wrestling in 2005.

I’ll never stop looking for the bright spots, and I’ll never stop sharing them with all of you, because I love professional wrestling. That's all for this update of the Pro Wrestling Reporter. Thank you for subscribing. As always, I'm Greg Sluchinski. Keep your browser here!

Great scenario. Four of the best wrestling promotions being booked by four of the greatest minds in the 2005 C-Verse. What's not to love. Although i would have preferred somebody booking SCCW over USPW but never mind, looking forward to this.

I did turn an Al the Hillbilly regen into a major star in The Climb (Clyde Puder, the Hillbilly Hammer). They don't fit MAW's roster rules, but I'll be pushing hard behind the scenes to make sure they get a big run! Maybe even as NAWC Tag Team Champions. FROM THE OFFICE OF CLIFF ANDERSON

“I wanna thank you for coming in this month,” Cliff Anderson said to the talent sitting across from him. “Christmas Cage Chaos is a big event for us every year, and, with you on board, this year stands to be the biggest yet!”

The Asian man sat across the table nodded graciously; Fumihiro Ota, known around the wrestling world as “Super Ninja” had been cut from Total Championship Wrestling earlier in the year as they nixed their cruiserweight division.

“I am eager to show the wrestling world what I can do without being confined to a cruiserweight division, Mr. Anderson,” Ota spoke softly. “I am eager for you to announce my participation in the cage match.”

“We’re very eager to have you,” said the mustachioed owner. “I can’t say much right now, but… well, there are big things on the horizon. I’d love to have you aboard for more than just December, if you’re interested.”

“Ah, Mr. Anderson,” Ota smiled. “Of course, of course. We can talk after the holidays, yes? I’m thinking of going home for a visit, and maybe some work while I’m there.”

“Well, I’d be more than happy to keep you open for Japanese dates and whatever else catches your fancy,” Cliff said, trying to sell him on the idea of becoming an indie darling. “Think of all the dream matches we can put on for the fans here! Why, I could even bring in Narato, give TCW fans that blow off between the two of you they never got.”

Ota nodded again with another wide smile, carefully opening his bottle of water for a drink.

“Please, Mr. Anderson, in January,” Ota refutes again. “I have been busy for TCW for so long, I want to rest.”

“Of course, of course,” Cliff grinned. “I’m sorry, I’m just very excited for several things, not the least of which is to be working with you. But, there’s a big announcement coming up so--”

“Ah, yes, so I have heard,” Ota nodded, cutting off Anderson mid-sentence. “An alliance, yes?”

“Something like that,” Cliff answered coyly. “It’s gonna be big, and you could help us make it even bigger. But, yes, in January! For now, let’s talk about the match…”
