United Promotions Japan - Era of the Emperor [ThunderVerse]

Recommended Posts

image.png

Tokyo, Japan - United Promotions Japan was formed in 1951 as a conglomeration of the smaller regional federations across the country after the government introduced strict regulations for the sport. The promotion quickly established professional wrestling as one of the most popular sports in Japan, thanks in large part to trailblazer Ozeki who really established the sport throughout Asia. UPJ has gone through many different eras during its 70 year history - from the Ozeki days of the 1950s, the gaijin-heavy 1980s and the slim pickings of the early 2000s.

In 2002, Ozeki's twin nephews Jun and Kenji Matsumoto purchased a controlling stake in UPJ but their poor management led to both the DIASPORA and HONOUR walkouts. With the promotion looking to be on its last legs, multinational drinks company Blue Rhino bought the company in 2015 and placed fan favorite veteran Tetsuo Nagata in charge. UPJ is finally back on top in Japan and looking set for a very successful 70th year.

UPJ INTERNATIONAL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

image.jpeg image.jpeg

The premier championship in UPJ and one of the most well respected championships in all of wrestling, the UPJ International Heavyweight title has been held by some of the biggest names in the country since Ozeki first held the gold in 1951.

UPJ JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

image.jpeg image.jpeg

The first title to really showcase Japanese junior wrestling, the Junior Heavyweight belt has been held by some of the greatest performers in wrestling history. Despite being abused by the Matsumotos, the belt is returning to its former glory.

The International Tag Team titles are the heavyweight tag belts in United Promotions Japan. With some of the top tag teams in Japan and North America having battled for the title over the years, the belt is one of the most prestigious in the world.

Having been seen as the title that launched junior tag wrestling, the Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles have been on a bit of a rollercoaster since. Virtually ignored by the Matsumotos, the titles are seeing a resurgence since Blue Rhino's takeover.

OZEKI SUMMIT

 image.jpeg image.jpeg

Wrestling's most prestigious prize and the greatest tournament in the sport, the Ozeki Summit was created in 1990 to honor the memory of the legendary Masakado Asari. Many of the Summit winners have gone on to become legends of the sport.

JUNIOR MOUNTAIN CLIMB

 image.jpeg image.jpeg

The Junior Mountain Cup was UPJ's attempt to recreate the success of the Ozeki Summit for its junior wrestlers. Whilst the title has never had the consistency to get close, some years the tournament has eclipsed even its big brother!

BLUE RHINO CUP

image.jpeg Atonga_alt.jpg Taheiji Ebisawa_alt.jpg

Born in 2018, the Blue Rhino Cup was introduced to the UPJ schedule as a show of the "unity between the Blue Rhino Corporation and UPJ". Not considered a major honor in UPJ, it nevertheless shows the depth of the tag team division in UPJ.

KINJO-JIDAI

image.jpeg

Kinjo-jidai, or the Kinjo Era, is the cult of personality surrounding the "Emperor of Wrestling" Kintaro Kinjo. After turning on his friends and fans and abandoning the Hall of The United Throne in 2017, Kintaro proceeded to slowly build up a cabal around himself. Employing muscle such as Waotaka Eda and Torture alongside lackeys from the junior division, Kinjo's most dangerous gamble is the recruitment of Katsuhiko Ishii and Dustin LeFever, men with huge egos of their own, as heirs-apparent.

HALL OF THE UNITED THRONE

image.png

Formed in 2015 in response to the emerging threat of Erik Van Rijn's RENEGADES, the Hall of the United Throne remain the premier face unit in UPJ. More of a loose alliance than an actual stable, the group has undergone a huge amount of change in recent years, with founders Kintaro Kinjo and Juro Deguchi leaving for their own groups. Now led by veteran Ryotaro Naruto, the group's combined experience is vital to its success in the ring.

Over the years, Kato has transformed from tag team icon to one of the most respected singles heavyweights in all of Japan. Having had his card marked by Kintaro-jidai throughout 2019, Kato returned from injury with the news that he had formed his own alliance. Arguably the strongest heavyweight group in UPJ, Kato is joined by some of the biggest and best fighters in the company, with experienced hand Erik van Rijn as his right-hand.

HARDROCKCITY

image.png

HardRockCity is Juro Deguchi's long-running stable. Although the group had some downtime in the mid-2010s, HRC can trace its history back more than a decade. Reformed to combat Kintaro Kinjo's shock betrayal of the Hall of The United Throne, HRC has grown and grown with the likes of Cameron Cody, Junichi Matsuo and TOKI INK becoming much respected members of the group. Juro Deguchi continues to be the clear leader, however, and with no apparent heir, the group's long-term future is in doubt.

UNITED PROMOTIONS JAPAN

2021 PRIMER

WHAT'S A GOD EMPEROR TO A NON-BELIEVER?

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

With an ego out of control, Kintaro Kinjo - the self-proclaimed God Emperor of UPJ - has kept himself on top of the UPJ mountain through sheer force with the majority of challengers falling at his feet. Expecting Kato to fall in line after a failed challenge for the UPJ International Heavyweight title, Kinjo was instead left enraged when Kato announced the formation of the Ignite Muscle Army. With the battle lines drawn, it may be on Kato's shoulders that the fate of UPJ rests on.

ACTIONS MEET CONSEQUENCES

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

Once held in high regard as the leader of FEARLESS, Oda Yamawaki seemed like the man who would take Kintaro Kinjo's place after his descent into darkness. Instead, Oda's attitude took a turn for the worst as well and since FEARLESS' disbandment in 2016, he has been a lone wolf in UPJ. Approached by Juro Deguchi to join HardRockCity in 2020, Oda instead laid out the elder statesman and Juro has since made it his mission to teach Oda that actions have consequences.

MOMENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT

image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg

Left to go solo for the first time in a long time after Shingo Hashi's departure, Jin Fujiwara has been grinding out a reputation for himself as a singles Junior star. Attracting the attention of Kozue, what was intended to be an exhibition match turned ugly when Jin scored an upset victory. Unable to directly challenge Kozue for a championship bout due to injury, Jin made it clear on his return that Kozue and his Junior Heavyweight title are in his sights!

DUAL JUNIOR DUEL

image.jpeg image.jpegimage.pngimage.jpeg image.jpeg

The Kinjo-jidai representatives in the Junior tag ranks, Akito Nakada and Haruko Yamada had it easy for the longest time - defeating all comers with relative ease (and help from the perpetually annoying Dustin LeFever). Faced with their first real threat in the newly formed duo of Cameron Cody and Junichi Matsuo, the two teams have battled on and off since the summer of 2020 without a clear winner in sight so far.

UPJ NEW YEAR UNITED! 2021 - PRESS CONFERENCE

SATURDAY WEEK 1, JANUARY 2021

As per tradition, United Promotions Japan held a press conference the day before the UPJ New Year UNITED event that kicks off the new year for the promotion.

UPJ spokesperson Kenta Sonoda kicked off the press conference by recapping the previous show, the critically acclaimed UPJ Hall of Immortals from December 2020. Only one set of champions retained their titles, with Muscle Brigade making their first defense of the UPJ International Tag Team Championships over the PunkRockCity duo of TOKI INK & Danger Asahara. Kozue became four-time UPJ Junior Heavyweight Champion by defeating Furosuto to end the latter's second reign with the title. Cameron Cody & Junichi Matsuo, collectively known as The Fallen, defeated JuniorGrace (Akito Nakada & Haruko Yamada) to win the UPJ Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships for the first time. And in the main event, Kintaro Kinjo defeated Oda Yamawaki to win the UPJ International Heavyweight Championship for a third time. Kinjo, now perhaps the most despised wrestler in Japan after years of being the Ace, proclaimed afterward that this title is never leaving his waist, because this is Era of the Emperor.

Kintaro Kinjo was the first man up at this press conference, with many questions dealing with his title victory at Hall of Immortals and future challengers. Kato spoke up when the latter question came up, stating that he defeated Torture at Hall of Immortals and also won the 2020 Ozeki Summit while reigning as the UPJ International Heavyweight Champion. If anyone deserves a title match, it is him. Kinjo scoffed, stating that he would rather face someone else in the Ignite Muscle Army than Kato, who he claims has not lived up to expectations despite being a back-to-back Ozeki Summit winner and former heavyweight champion. Kato, of course, took offense to this and the two men nearly came to blows before being separated.

In other Ignite Muscle Army news, Erik van Rijn & Bruiser Cassidy announced that they would be entering the tag team division under the name The Runaways. The two men frequently teamed the prior year, and decided it was time to make their tag team official. They also announced they would petition to be selected for a spot in the Blue Rhino Cup, UPJ's tag team single-elimination tournament, later this month.

UPJ Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Cameron Cody & Junichi Matsuo were the breakout junior tag team, perhaps the breakout tag team overall, of 2020. The men have been putting on electric performances and have had their praises sung by everyone from wrestling writer Simon Stanford to UPJ CEO Tetsuo Nagata. Cody has a key voice in promoting UPJ in his home country of the United States, and continued to push for UPJ expansion in this press conference. UPJ+ subscribers in the USA continue to climb, and he mentioned that the American fans deserve to see the best wrestling in the world in person.

To close the press conference. Ozeki Dojo head trainer Ichiro Mishima introduced the three newest young rhinos for UPJ:

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg

Xi Gao | Goro Nemoto | Kwon Ha-neul

Xi Gao hails from China and was originally trained by UPJ legend Dagger Ito. He is consistently referred to as the future of Japanese professional wrestling, praise that has given from top stars in puroresu. With his mentor's blessing, he will join the Ozeki Dojo while performing on UPJ shows as a young rhino.

Goro Nemoto was trained exclusively by Ichiro Mishima, and is another one that UPJ has high hopes for. Not much is known about his skills at this time, but they will become more evident as he begins working the undercards of UPJ events.

The announcement that Kwon Ha-neul would join the Ozeki Dojo was perhaps the biggest news to come out of the press conference. Ha-neul is a remnant of UPJ's failed United Promotions Korea experiment alongside Park Jung-hee (who is currently one excursion in UWT). After UPK failed, Kinjo personally vouched to keep Ha-neul under UPJ watch, and personally trained him and even wrestled him in dark matches. However, before graduating, Ha-neul decided to leave the Ozeki Dojo to test himself elsewhere, a rare move made even rarer when he received the blessing of Kinjo to do so. After working the Japanese indies for just over a year, Ha-neul, perhaps realizing that he had made a mistake, reentered the Ozeki Dojo to complete his training. He is the first publicly known trainee to be accepted back into the Dojo, which shows how much pull Kintaro Kinjo has across all of UPJ.

The three trainees, all heavyweights, join junior heavyweight Kamai Takauji as UPJ's young rhinos. The quartet will simultaneously train in the dojo while wrestling undercard matches and assisting at ringside throughout the rest of the shows.

Loving this already. They have a great roster and their are a ton of quality workers to bring in.

You're correct, the current roster is outstanding and the free agent pool across the world is so deep. I'm excited to bring in some names in the future.

Ahh yesssir, I love UPJ. Very excited to see you tackle this, friend. Haven't seen this iteration of it in TEW 2020, but I'm stoked to read it from you!

UPJ will always hold a special place in my heart. A game I had with them in TVerse Diamond was my favorite save of all time. And Rey de Reyes is just an improvement!

UPJ NEW YEAR UNITED

SUNDAY W1, JANUARY 2021

United Promotion Japan's first show of the new year is in the books. After the near-brawl at the press conference between Kinjo-jidai and Ignite Muscle Army, the two sides met in a four-on-four match in the main event. UPJ International Heavyweight Champion Kintaro Kinjo avoided Kato for the entire of the contest, tagging out every time Kato was tagged in.

Kato and Atonga beat the brakes off of Dustin LeFever in hopes of goading Kinjo to stop them, but Kinjo did not bite, instead jumping off the apron and motioning for Katsuhiko Ishii and Waotaka Eda to make the save instead. Kinjo did get involved in the end however, as he tagged in and hit an Emperor of the Throne on Takehide Harada to pick up the pinfall.

In other news from UPJ New Year UNITED, Erik van Rijn and Bruiser Cassidy picked up a win in their first match under their new name of The Runaways, Xi Gao made his UPJ debut in a losing effort against Danger Asahara, and Furosuto showed a violent streak in his (and Utamara's) victory over the Wild duo of Hidetsugu Genji and Joao Iwahara.
