So in other words... the Diaz brothers are some of the best second tier Welterweights in the world.

Yup!

Daff pretty much nailed it; Diaz is great where he is, having fun fights. I'd love to see him in the UFC fighting Fitch, St Pierre, Kos, Kim etc....purely because I like seeing the best fight the best.

But smart money says Diaz loses more of those fights than he wins, and does so in uninspiring fashion, getting smothered by guys with a superior top game that can neutralise his grappling.

Wow so UFC 129 is actually stacked and awesome. I know they want to sell out the big arena but I thought they would just rely on on GSP in Canada like they have before. This card is much much better than the last GSP fight where they just relied on him to sell.

MAIN CARD

Champ Georges St-Pierre vs. Jake Shields (for welterweight title)

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick (for featherweight title)

Phil Davis vs. Matt Hamill

Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida

Mark Bocek vs. Ben Henderson

then of course some good solid undercard action as well but all of those main card fights are amazing.

Yeah, loads of great cards coming up.

I'm tremendously excited for tomorrow's UFC but I really don't have the kind of vested interest I had in, say, 117 or 121. So here are some boring picks, feel free to make fun of me tomorrow night.

Anderson over Vitor, TKO. I really want Vitor to win because it'll make the division 400 times more interesting but Silva's much more dynamic and he's still outstanding at counter striking. Or maybe age has caught up to him. I'm not counting Vitor out by any means but he's going up against a real monster.

Franklin over Forrest, TKO. Sharper striking, wacky left hands and managing to avoid damage from the bottom. This one should be good.

Bones Jones Stones over Bader, TKO. Bader's gassy and really, really loses a step in the later rounds. He might find a home with his right but he'll probably be on the receiving end of a trip, guard pass and an elbow racing at 400 km/h.

Ellenberger over Carlos Eduardo Rocha by TKO or decision. Ellenberger's a pretty bread and butter midwestern guy except he does everything very well. Nasty wrestler, hard hitter and able to lay down the ground and pound. Haven't seen much of Rocha - certainly not enough to think he has a shot against Ellenberger - but maybe he'll shock me with a kneebar or something in a scramble.

Torres over Banuelos, submission. My Main Man Money Miguel will win but it'll be a fun fight.

Also Mendes over Omigawa, Mighty Mouse over Kid, Cerrone over Kelly.

My predictions:

Silva over Belfort by TKO in round one or two.

Forrest over Franklin by decision. Close fight that I could see go either way.

Jones to beat Bader by decision. I hope this is an exciting fight but I have a feeling that it won't be.

Ellenberger over Rocha possibly by decision or TKO.

Only got Franklin wrong. I'm chronically unable to pick the guy with the huge weight advantage. I want to believe okay!

I thought last night was a good card. Anderson is unbelievable as always, that front kick was a thing of beauty. Wasn't nearly as good as Kohi's but it's up there.

Franklin doesn't belong at light heavyweight. 195 would be the perfect weight for him but he's slowed down considerably, no surprise at 36, and Forrest just straight up bullied him around. Good fight.

Jones is fantastic. His wrestling looked absolutely stellar, taking down a fresh Bader with ease and just nailing him into the canvas any time Bader tried his own takedowns. He'll take down Shogun with ease but whether or not he can 1) avoid Shogun's nasty bottom game and 2) stop throwing superman elbows because he'll run right into a looping overhand and die remains to be seen. Much better fight than Shogun/Rashad at any rate.

Wished Ellenberger would've gotten more offense off in the second and third since he was so superior on the fight but the real story of this fight was the amazing first round and Adelaide Byrd's 30-27 Rocha scorecard.

Torres jabbed and Banuelos threw invisible baseballs from the other side of the octagon. I don't blame Torres here, he fought smart and did damage with his jabs while Banuelos only went inside the last fifteen seconds. He should've watched some Tyson tapes.

Mendes/Omigawa was my FOTN, both guys looked good and I still have hopes for Omigawa.

All in all a good card and I'm very excited for what it means for the future. GSP/Silva... man. I hope that happens so badly.

He pretty much shot Okami in the foot but to be quite honest I don't care if Yushin feels harshley done by; I want to see Silva/GSP.

Mendes was impressive and Jones was amazing with what he did to Bader. Truth be told, I think Rua may very well lose when they meet next month.

Forrest just fought smart thsi time around. That's all there is to it.

Pretty good show. Bummed Kid looked washed up, but we knew that would happen. Mendes looked great, but Omigawa is not getting enough credit. The meme seems to be "OMG Japan is dead!" which in a lot of ways is true, but Omigawa was a live fight, stuff several takedowns which seemed impossible against Mendes, and threatened with a slick inverted armbar. I still think he'll make splash in the UFC, but Mendes is just on another level. Mendes-Nunes would be a great title eliminator, and I'm getting pumped already for the inevitable Mendes-Aldo showdown.

I was getting worried about the Silva fight, but they found their groove and that was an awesome KO. It's funny what one highlight reel can erase in people's minds. I feel back for Okami, but it's time for GSP-Silva. And if GSP really wants to take that much time off to build muscle mass after the Shields fight then there might be time to slip the Okami fight in there anyway. I'd rather they just start planning for the superfight now though.

Bones is the real deal. Bader is a rock and I think his wrestling is some of the best at 205, so I honestly though this could be a fight were Bones gets flashy and winds up on his back. Wrong. He is a man among boys out there, and I think he's going to be champion. What a total freak athlete combined with steadily increasing technique. GSP 2.0.

Man, 155 and 170 are shark tanks. I really love where welterweight is at; you've got guys like Hathaway, Pierce, Ellenberger, Hendricks, Pyle, and Story who are all young guns on the rise. Any these guys would decimate Strikeforce's roster. I'd like to see Pierce against Ellenberger to see who gets the big fight.

I'm still really high on Rocha too. I think that fight was extremely close and came down to the difference of a couple takedowns. There seems to be chatter online about how Ellenberger was flat, but I just think Rocha is dangerous. His sweeps are incredible.

Good show, and I liked that I was able to see basically every fight.

Soooooo, just incase anyone forgot...the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time is back in action tonight. I've got my Fedor shirt and my retro Russian Top Team jacket out in preparation, as well as a pair of rubber gloves so that I may maintain optimum purchase on his nuts all evening.

Fedor is going to mess Bigfoot up baaaaad. I don't know why people rate that dude so much based on beating a declining AA (and not putting him down despite landing numerous shots on his chin) and...erm...well he hasn't really done much else of note! Fedor will give him the Mike Kyle treatment in the 1st round, with the only difference being that he'll finish the job. Fedor, T(KO) 1st round.

Five or six years ago this was one of my heavyweight dream fights...now, not so much. We know the story with Andrei's chin, and Sergei is hitting like a truck these days. Unfortunately what he's gained in power and versatility with his striking, he's lost in speed, and that's the key to beating AA. This is really a pick-em, but I'm going with Kharitonov, decision.

Johnson is a beast and has some huge power in his fists. Trouble is, he's never really faced an actual prospect or quality MMAist, just fellow brawlers who haven't been quite as good at brawling as he is. SDR is a prospect, an incredibly technical and versatile striker with a developing ground game. He's also not fought anyone of note, and has been criminally inactive thanks to Strikeforce not getting their act together. Still, this is a striking match, and SDR is the better striker. Del Rosario, (T)KO, 3rd.

Griggs is what he is...don't be fooled by the routing of Lashley, he's a part time fighter, a tough guy, but nothing more. Villante...well we don't really know a whole lot about him. Decent record for an up and comer, similar size to Griggs. The one thing on his side is that he's been much more active, and that tips the scales for me. Villante, (T)KO, 1st.

Ahh, this is a tough one for me, I've known Valentijn for many years. Back in the day people were talking about him, not Alistair being the Overeem brother that would make it big. His problem is a mental one, and nothing will have changed that at this stage in the game. He's fighting a guy who is at the tail end of his career in Rey Sefo, a guy who is really just dipping his toe into MMA rather than making a serious run. This could be a great brawl, or Valentijn could get it to the ground early. If it's the former, Sefo all day, if it's the latter, we could very well see a submission from 'The Python'. My heart says Valentijn, my head says Sefo (T)KO, 1st

Soooooo, just incase anyone forgot...the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time is back in action tonight.

I didn't know Nogueira was fighting [/aspiring Bloody Elbow writer]

Also yeah I mostly agree with your picks except if Bigfoot is able to bully Fedor to the ground he could do some serious damage. He's super slow but much bigger and has way more experience with a cage, if he gets extended periods of control against the cage or manages to land some ground and pound from top position it wouldn't shock me. Eventually Fedor will adapt as he does and Big Foot will run into an overhand right and get swarmed for a TKO though, probably in the second. Of course he'll break his hands and have to retire from the tournament.

It's strange that an ultra tough fighter has such fragile hands. He doesn't even have Igor's excuse of having literally thrown thousands of punches bare fisted.

Sergei KOs Arlovski. Sergei hits mad hard and Andrei's too scared to be an offensively gifted fighter anymore.

Privately I'm hoping for another omoplata from a hurt del Rosario but I think he'll end up tapping Lavar from top position. I don't think fight is quite as clear cut as you do, Brandon Cash dropped him and as you said Lavar has big power and surprising versatility with his punches.

Chad Griggs will lose. He got a gift TKO from the ref in an awfully judged fight. Villante is raw but he's a great athlete and he'll bash Griggs' skull in.

Sefo will either hit Valentijn hard once and the fight will be over or he'll get standing guillotined or leglocked or something. No ground game vs. no heart. Flip a coin.

Sort of morbidly looking forward to it. All heavyweights all night.
