AWF: THE THUNDER ERA (jhdVerse)

http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx181/jhdTEW/AWF%20Diary/AWF.jpg

What is AWF: The Thunder Era (jhdVerse)?

This diary is a new style of project for me. Towards the end of Under Pressure I found myself struggling for time, and since then I’ve been cautious about starting a new diary knowing that it might not really get going. I’ve experimented with a few different styles of writing since then, but this is definitely the furthest from most. Thanks to suggestions from the likes of angeldelayette and Bigpapa42, the AWF: Thunder Era will be told not through the eyes of the viewer, but through the eyes of wrestling’s most controversial ‘blogger’ and former WWWE writer, Brian Jack. The show write-ups, the backstage industry stories and the current news articles will almost all be written ‘by’ Brian Jack, complete with his own unique views on the world of sports entertainment. But the concept does not end in the form it is written.

The diary, set in the jhdVerse, will follow the Awesome Wrestling Federation from January 2012 when it embarks on its most ambitious period yet – Terry Thunder has signed with the company. Much like the man who inspired his creation Hulk Hogan’s impact with TNA (no pun intended), Terry Thunder has been hired by the AWF’s owner to help propel them into the #1 spot of the US wrestling scene. Will it work? How will the fans react? How will the roster react? Aside from adding Terry Thunder to the AWF on a written contract, the data I am using is the same 1.02 as everyone elses. There is, however, the possibility that I will add characters as we go along - either as DLC packs for the mod are released or if any AI generated characters or regens are worth hiring but don't have an appropriate picture.

The diary itself will not feature a prediction competition per se, in the hopes that it may allow comments to be more natural. However, there may be posts about upcoming cards and people are more than welcome to put in predictions if they wish. PPVs will feature a full card prediction for those who want to join in.

Although I’m aware that some people may not have played the jhdVerse, there will not be a huge roster review to begin with. This is for two reasons - 1) anything I would write down is easily available in the mod, and 2) character development in the form of profiles will probably be a feature of the diary going forward. There will, however, be a roster/champions list as of January 2012's first show. There will be a roster update every in-game month or so, depending on how much change there is within the promotion.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you all enjoy the ride!

Credits...

Huge thanks go to
Shmoe
for all his help with the jhdVerse. Although the majority of graphics in the diary will be my own, the excellent title belts of
MJStark
are too good to be ommitted. As previously mentioned
angeldelayette
and
Bigpapa42
were both helpful and encouraging in equal measure as I debated whether to start this diary.

The first show will probably be up sometime tomorrow, I've just got to put the finishing touches to the writeup. There will probably be a post or two from Brian Jack before that though. :)

You know I'll be reading.

Thanks Tiberious! I hope my vision of the jhdVerse can live up to that of your POW diary! :D

Looking forward to this one, jhd1! As I've told you in pm, you are always entertaining to read.

Thanks as always, my friend!

TERRY THUNDER SIGNED WITH AWF? NEW PROJECT

JANUARY 1 2012

Rumour has it that Terry Thunder has finally signed an exclusive contract with the Awesome Wrestling Federation. As far as I know, he will not be used in an in-ring role, but will be a replacement authority figure for Ezekiel Trillion.

Given the potential for the AWF and Thunder partnership, I will be following each AWF show live on this website. These reviews will recap the action while featuring my insider knowledge that you've come to love. Don't worry though - I'm not going to hold back, and the AWF won't be getting an easy ride now that Brian Jack is their #1 critic! These reviews will begin on this Wednesday's show, which is set to be the debut show for Thunder. So don't forget to check back here Wednesday, January 3 2012 at 9/8c for a running commentary on AWF Shockwave.

To keep you busy until then, here is the latest AWF press release...

I had to double-take, as for a moment I thought you'd given your own show preview a rating. :D

On a more serious note, it'll be interesting to see how the creator of the world does when writing a dynasty set in it. Will be following this for sure. :)

CHAPERONE, TIMOTHY HAWK & DRAKE RICHARDS ARGUE. EZEKIEL TRILLION ANNOUNCES THE MAIN EVENT

Okay, so here we are at the start of the Terry Thunder era - aka make or break time for the Awesome Wrestling Federation. Rumour has it, the money they are spending on Thunder is about the same as most of the rest of the roster put together. Sounds about right for everyone’s favourite ‘superstar’. The action kicks off fairly predictably with AWF World champion Chaperone and his buddies Theo Barkley and Owen Money in the centre of the ring. Chaperone cuts a pretty decent promo about his victory over Timothy Hawk at last Sunday’s PPV
Where Champions Clash
. Unsurprisingly he forgets to mention that he only won because Barkley smashed a title belt into Hawk’s face. Still, that’s heels for you.

As the boos build for Chaperone, Barkley and Money (the last two still haven’t said anything – why are they here again!?), Timothy Hawk comes down to the ring right on cue. As usual the three smarks in the front row are booing Hawk. Some people need to get a life. Hawk reminds everyone that he had Chaperone beat at the PPV, and that without Barkley’s help he’d have never won. Chaperone claims he was just ‘more prepared’ than Hawk, and that having Barkley as backup was just preparation for a strong performance from Hawk (is Chaperone attempting to put someone over!?).

Just when things look like they might finally kick off the wail of Drake Richards’ theme tune (which really, really needs a change) signals the arrival of the sport’s most arrogant babyface. Richards saunters down to the ring and apologises to Hawk for what he is about to say, but claims that if anyone deserves a title shot it’s him, and he wants it tonight. Chaperone laughs at Richards’ demands (I have to admit, so am I), and says if it is up to him he’ll not get a title shot ‘this side of 2015’. As if.

Anyway, given that we’ve been here for nearly ten minutes already isn’t it about time we had Ezekiel ‘The Anti-Promo Machine’ Trillion? Oh, there he is on the big screen. It’s a good job we’re getting a break from his smarky, boring and thoroughly uninteresting segments. Trillion says that he’s in Hong Kong on business (is he really!? Looks like New York to me) but that he has sent a representative to replace him. Everyone knows it is Thunder, Trillion, why not just say so!?!?!?! The President of the AWF tells the fans that until the ‘representative’ arrives the decision making is still up to him. Instead of a title match, tonight’s main event will be Chaperone, Barkley & Towerblock against Drake Richards, Timothy Hawk & Herculez. Sounds good, although some explanation of why they’ve rammed the Towerblock vs Herculez feud on the end would have been nice.

SEBASTIAN CURTIS vs LEROY WINTERS

*A fantastically open match that saw both Curtis and Winters show off their wrestling talent.

*Winters came close to victory a number of times, but he missed an opportunity to lock in the Long Winter’s Rest (Sleeper Hold)…

*…which gave Curtis the perfect opportunity to hit the Sebsplex
(Fisherman’s Suplex)
to get the win.

SEBASTIAN CURTIS wins via pinfall (6:44)

This match proved exactly why Sebastian Curtis has won three World titles and the WWWE Intercontinental title four times (back when title belts meant something). The man is a master ring technician, although I have to admit Winters did his fair share of wrestling in this match too. If that man had a little more charisma he could really have been something. Fantastic opening match.

SILVA DOLLA OFFERS HIS SUPPORT TO TIMOTHY HAWK

And…we’re off backstage again. This time we’re whisked back to the nondescript locker room that never seems to have more than one person in it, despite having about fifteen lockers. This week’s locker room resident is Timothy Hawk and he’s preparing for his match (or something along those lines) when in walks his ‘buddy’ Silva Dolla. Still not sure where the idea for these two teaming came from, but at least you get the impression that they do like each other. Dolla offers his support to Hawk, saying that he was sure that Hawk was going to win the title at
Where Champions Clash
. Not the most exciting segment ever, but at least it was short. Dolla is definitely learning from Hawk in the promo department, and at least he didn’t start rapping.

ENEMIES OF THE STATE vs DERRICK ROLLINS & LUKE GRAVES

*A good match that really showed off the great teamwork of Enemies of the State…

*…and the untried, and ultimately uncomfortable, alliance of Rollins and Graves.

*The Enemies’ quick tags and effective double teaming gave them a real edge, and Stone hit the Stone’s Throw
(Spinning Flapjack)
to secure the win.

ENEMIES OF THE STATE win via pinfall (6:57)

Everyone knows that the AWF hates tag teams, so why am I surprised that they had to throw together two random rookies to face the Enemies? This match was designed to put over Stone and Binx, and in my opinion it did the job. They’ve had to tone down their act since moving to the AWF, but they still have more character than the rest of the division (who are the champions again!?). Rollins and Graves are definitely two for the future, so I don’t really like seeing them job so decisively. Here’s hoping they’ll get more of a push in the ‘Thunder’ era.

KITTY REARDON INTERVIEWS GOLD INC.

We’re off backstage again, where Chaperone, Owen Money, Theo Barkley (haven’t we seen these lot already!?) and Marco De Francesco are stood alongside the delightful Kitty Reardon. Gold Inc. continually interrupt Reardon’s questions (they are heels after all) and continually snipe both Hawk and Richards. Owen Money says that one day soon the members of Gold Inc. will hold every title belt in the AWF. He does realise he needs another member though, right? Or is he going to go for the United States title himself. This was a fairly standard angle that didn’t really have the bite of the opening segment. That, and Owen Money was great in 1995, but he’s far too gimmicky for 2012.

VINCENT I PARKER vs JOHNNY HOLLYWOOD

*This was only Hollywood’s second match in the AWF, his first was a shock victory over Leroy Winters at
Where Champions Clash
.

*Johnny Hollywood put in a great shift, but Vincent I Parker used the crowd to his advantage…

*…which only wound up Hollywood into making a mistake…

*…that let Parker hit an Out of the Park
(Huge Lariat)
to secure the win.

VINCENT I PARKER wins via pinfall (7:18)

Johnny Hollywood has the look, the skills and the charisma to make it big in the AWF. He did, however, win a reality TV show to get a contract which makes me immediately dislike him. And not in a ‘I should dislike heels’ sort of way. His performance against VIP was impressive enough though, although he didn’t really get that much of a chance against Parker. Parker, on the other hand, continues to impress me. Considering his amateur background, I’ve seen better technical wrestlers (see: Seb Curtis), but he’s a fantastic all-rounder and is extremely agile for a bigger man. World champion material? I think so, even if this wasn’t the best match on the card by a long shot.

TERRY THUNDER’S LIMOUSINE ARRIVES

Ah, a good old ‘superstar arrives in limousine’ angle for Terry Thunder’s first appearance on AWF television. There are a LOT of security guards in that parking lot. I like that. We know he’s coming (despite Trillion seemingly forgetting at the top of the show), but assuming he’s going to be the main attraction let’s not see too much of him. Not much to say, other than it was well-placed and well-edited – having glimpses of Thunder definitely helped rack up the suspense ahead of his ‘unveiling’.

CORE vs WILSON HANCOCK w/Adrienne

*This was an excellent semi-main event match, featuring some fantastic wrestling from two underrated performers.

*Core used his size to great advantage in the early going, with a series of stiff powerslams coming close to a pinfall.

*Hancock fought back, however, using his superior speed to gain a foothold back in the match.

*Just as Wilson Hancock looked to be closing in on the victory, a surprise appearance from Jean-Claude Giroux distracting him and his valet Adrienne just long enough for Core to hit the Korah’s Parable
(Elevated Powerbomb)
to nick the win.

CORE wins via pinfall (10:22)

With the match over, Jean-Claude Giroux sprang into action from his position at the top of the ramp. Charging down to the ring, Giroux began to attack Hancock while Core headed to the back. As Adrienne shouted for Giroux to stop his assault a horde of security officials came pouring into the ring to break things up.

Core is probably my favourite ‘monster’ in the AWF, right now, but that’s probably because I wrote for his original Korah character in the WWWE. Phil’s a great wrestler, and this match against Wilson Hancock went a long way to proving me right. Hancock himself is no slouch, and I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by Hancock’s return to the WWWE. The key thing in this match was that both Core and Hancock made it believable – Hancock had a chance of winning despite his smaller size but we believed it, and while Core’s win made him look strong, Giroux’s interference kept Hancock from looking like a lemon. The post-match attack was a little redundant, with Giroux having already made an impact with the run-in but at least it drives home the animosity. Oh yeah, and considering how Adrienne basically said nothing for six months as Giroux’s valet, she’s sure making up for it with all this shrieking!

CHAPERONE, THEO BARKLEY & TOWERBLOCK vs DRAKE RICHARDS, TIMOTHY HAWK & HERCULEZ

*A match truly deserving of its placement on the card, saw excellent action from all six man and the crowd were really into the action.

*The majority of the match was spent furthering the three feuds – Chaperone vs Richards, Barkley vs Hawk and Towerblock vs Herculez.

*While most of the in-ring action centred around Chaperone and Richards, each of their partners also got a chance to shine in an unusually long main event.

*In the eighth minute Towerblock nearly took Timothy Hawk’s head off with a huge lariat, but the pinfall only reached two…

*…and Herculez nearly got the victory for his team with a huge bear hug on Barkley.

*In the end, Chaperone hit Timothy Hawk with an Elevated Powerbomb in the sixteenth minute to secure the victory…

*But only because Chaperone used the ropes to make sure, and Barkley’s tackle stopped Richards from breaking things up.

CHAPERONE, BARKLEY & TOWERBLOCK win at 15:06 via pinfall

Talk about main event wrestling! While Chaperone and Drake Richard’s in-ring skills are a given (even if Chaperone is a little too one-dimensional for my tastes), the man I was most impressed with in this match was Towerblock. The man’s a beast, but he’s a good wrestler too, and his psychology is absolutely fantastic. I really enjoyed the weaving together of three storylines, although the main focus being on the title feud meant we didn’t get quite as much of the other two as I would have liked. The ending ‘controversy’ was pretty much a given, but I still enjoyed the match for what it was.

THE NEW ERA BEGINS

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for…Terry Thunder is here! Regular readers will know I’ve given Thunder his fair share of stick since the blog started (all deserved, I might add), but even I can’t deny the effect the man can have on a crowd. The blatant rip-off of his WWWE theme tune and the trademark moustache feels a bit like a timewarp. Is it 2012 or 1999? It takes a while for the crowd to quieten down, but once they do Thunder sets off on his catchphrase-laden debut promo. Thunder puts over the company, the wrestlers and the fans (which unsurprisingly gets a huge reaction). Thunder says that he isn’t here to take over the company, he’s not even here to wrestle (I told you!). No, Thunder is going to “help the AWF to become the #1 promotion in the United States” because apparently “that’s what this company, and these fans deserve”. How is he going to do that I hear you ask? Well apparently he has just become the “hiring, firing, match-making AWF Representative”. Snappy. To be fair to Thunder, he’s far more interesting than Trillion who would have burst into tears by now because the fans didn’t clap. Thunder continues by saying that 2012 is the beginning of a new era for the Awesome Wrestling Federation, and that it’s going to be “one hell of a ride”. And as the entire roster (faces and heels alike which makes no sense to me at all) come out to welcome Thunder to the AWF I do believe this is the end of the show. Well, as far as introductions go I think Thunder did pretty well.

BRIAN JACK'S OVERALL THOUGHTS

Strong show that understandably focused on building up to Terry Thunder’s introduction to the company. The debut promo was a good one, if a little predictable, so I hope Thunder can continue to build on this going forward. Some of the matches were fantastic – Core vs Hancock, Curtis vs Winters and the main event in particular. Whether this is typical for an AWF show (remember I usually only DVR Shockwave so I tend to skip the matches I expect to be boring) or whether Thunder’s presence pushed everyone a little further I guess we’ll find out as the weeks roll on. There were some inconsistencies that could have been avoided (I'm sure Thunder mentioned being in the arena all night despite us seeing his limo arrive), and some of the angle content could have been stronger and more focused - particularly from the interview segment, and I still don't know why we needed Giroux to attack again. Minor complaints aside I have certainly seen enough in this show to continue writing these live reviews – I hope you’ve all read enough to want to continue visiting the blog!

THUNDER DEBUTS IN AWF, SHOW RATINGS IN. BACKSTAGE PROBLEMS?

JANUARY 4 2012

As I noted earlier in the week Terry Thunder made his debut on AWF Shockwave yesterday evening. Thunder's appearance saw a sizeable jump in the show's TV ratings as Arcadia's earliest reports setting the viewing figure at 2.03, a 0.6 rise over the previous week's show.

Meanwhile, backstage problems continue to plague the AWF backstage area as my sources report that Travis Stine provoked Chris Candell, better known to fans as Slip, in an incident earlier in the evening that nearly erupted into an all out brawl. Reportedly the AWF creative team, made up of Trillion, Thunder, Richie Santana and Magnum Kirchart, did not punish Stine for his actions. Candell is said to be upset by the reaction of the creative team, while Stine is said to have mocked the quartet for the rest of the evening. If it were me, I'd have fired them both - Stine for being a jerk and Candell for having such a terrible gimmick. That's just me though. It will be interesting to see how things develop with this apparently laid back approach to backstage politics.

For those who missed the show, you can find a summary of the results below.

Thanks for the support so far everyone! And D-Lyrium, feel free! :D

Timber - you know, that's not a bad idea :p Who knows, anything can happen in the AWF! :D

By the way - anyone who has read my diaries will know that I'm a big fan of getting other writers involved, be they up-and-coming or veterans. If anyone wants to get involved just post here, or drop me a PM. Not sure what I'll do with any potential guest writers but I'm sure I'll come up with something!

AWF MAKE THREE NEW SIGNINGS. 10/1 SHOCKWAVE PREVIEW AVAILABLE.

JANUARY 5 2012

Earlier today I was emailed by my contact within the AWF who claims that the company have offered PPA contracts to three new signings, all of which were apparently recommended by Terry Thunder himself.

The new signings are said to be Richie Santana Jr, son of the recently hired AWF roadie and wrestling legend Richie Santana Sr, Mike Santorelli, one of the Become A Star finalists, and Davina Bridges, a former 'diva' in PWSUX who wrestled as Brooke Lynn Bridges. My source tells me that Richie Santana Jr is likely to be the first to debut, but that he will be closely followed by Santorelli. Santorelli is thought to be Terry Thunder's pet project, and he will be managed by Bridges when he debuts.

I love the style, very readable without skimping on the details... might have to steal it. :p

Seconded (including the stealing part :p). Very easy to read. The bloggers perspective provides some nice background info and depth to some of the characters too.

Santorelli's a solid pick up for AWF. I often sign him.
